"Manna from heaven" nghĩa là gì?

Nguồn sự sống. Photo by Jonny Swales

"Manna from heaven" = Lương thực từ trời -> Sự giúp đỡ/hỗ trợ bất ngờ khi đang trong hoàn cảnh khó khăn, không biết trước được. Đây là một cụm liên quan về một câu chuyện trong Kinh Thánh khi Chúa cung cấp lương thực một cách diệu kì cho những người I-sơ-ra-ên đang đói khát trên hoang mạc.

Ví dụ
The line was manna from heaven for reporters searching for a golden soundbite (một tuyên bố ngắn, hấp dẫn đáp ứng yêu cầu chú ý ngắn của tin tức truyền hình).

Indicators are showing signs of distress (cảnh túng quẫn, nghèo nàn), surplus monsoon (gió mùa bội thu) is manna from heaven as it will boost agri-sector income (gia tăng thu nhập trong lĩnh vực nông nghiệp) in the near future.

To a marketer, the idea of unbridled (buông thả, không kiểm soát) access to an individual's consumer (người tiêu thụ, tiêu dùng) and financial transactions (giao dịch tài chính) is manna from heaven, but the Cambridge Analytica scandal (vụ bê bối) showed that regulation is lagging in this area, so companies engaged in data analysis on a personal level will need to try and second-guess legislators (người lập pháp).

"Heavens opened" nghĩa là gì?

Khi ông trời rơi lệ. Photo by Christopher

"Heavens opened" = Thiên đàng mở cửa -> Bắt đầu một trận mưa lớn/trận mưa như trút nước xuống.

Ví dụ
Flooded Brum - it was the day the heavens opened and Birmingham was turned into a water park.

And just as quickly, the heavens opened and dumped just under two and a half inches of rain on Lexington in two days.

In Bali, if you’re outside when the torrential (dòng chảy xiết, xối xả), tropical rains (mưa nhiệt đới) start, there’s little you can do to avoid getting soaked (ướt đẫm). Or so I thought, until I was hiking in the Ayung Valley, near Ubud, when the heavens opened, and my guide, Eca, chopped down (chặt xuống) a banana leaf to use it as an umbrella. It was surprisingly effective.

"Heaven forbid" nghĩa là gì?

"Heaven forbid" = Lạy trời, đừng để điều không mong muốn xảy ra, lạy trời...đừng để chuyện đó xảy ra!

Ví dụ
"Not that I wish to convey (chuyền, truyền đạt) the impression that I regard photography purely as a business. Heaven forbid. But artists, like other men, must live, and, in order that they may do so, it is essential for them to have both feet firmly on the ground.

Prioritizing goofy (ngu ngốc) faces with my best friend over the Washington Monument wasn’t easy, but back then, sometimes the best choice wasn’t always the easiest one to make. Heaven forbid someone snatch (chộp, giật lấy) your camera and waste a photo.

And heaven forbid a plane piloted by a woman careen (lật nghiêng, chạy loạn xạ) into a fatal crackup (suy sụp không tránh được). A male pilot lost to a crash lived on as a tragic hero, whereas a woman who met the same fate simply died a tragedy (bi kịch). Sheinkin has no qualms (mối lo ngại, day dứt) about calling these behaviors and attitudes exactly what they were: “patronizing (ra vẻ bề trên, kẻ cả) and stupid.”

"Heaven help me" nghĩa là gì?

"Heaven help (one)" = Trời giúp ai -> Biết rằng/e rằng mình có thể gặp rắc rối, điều không tốt lành sẽ đến.

Ví dụ
I look at these characters I've known for, heaven help me, the better part of a half-century, and they're still young and fresh and dynamic (năng động, tràn đầy sức sống).

If Davis isn’t intrigued (làm ngạc nhiên, có mưu đồ) by the thought of teaming with Williamson and Jrue Holiday then heaven help him. He must be motivated by more than simply winning, because that Big Easy 3 would inflict (giáng đòn, gây ra) serious damage on their Western Conference rivals.

But will these two professional politicians agree to serve out their four-year terms (nhiệm kỳ bốn năm) if elected? And, heaven help us if either of these fiscally irresponsible politicians is elected mayor (thị trưởng), will they agree to pay for the special elections to fill the empty council seat (vị trí, ghế hội đồng còn trống)?

"Man of ideas" nghĩa là gì?

"Man of ideas" = người đàn ông đầy kế hoạch -> cụm từ này nghĩa là người lắm mưu nhiều kế, người có tài xoay.

Ví dụ
Jefferson, the man of ideas, wished for future generations to know him by the “self-evident truths” (sự thật hiển nhiên) that he would pass down to them, not by the practical compromises of his political career.

Mr. Pullman is a storyteller, not a lyricist (nhà thơ trữ tình); his writing is clear, clean and forceful (đầy sức thuyết phục), never striving for effect and all the more effective because of it. He’s also a man of ideas, which gives great savor (hơi hướng) to his work even if the ideas themselves are not universally congenial (thích hợp).

“He was a man of vision, a man of ideas who stuck to his principles. Sometimes he said things that people didn’t like, but he never made any compromises (thỏa hiệp) on his principles. He didn’t like that the Velodrome (which he also designed) became the Biodome. He said, ‘Better bicycles than penguins.’ But the guy was a genius, and it’s sad that we’re losing a friend of Montreal.”

Trevor Smith, 38, was found in a lift with his trousers (quần dài) and undies (quần xịp) around his ankles (quanh mắt cá chân) while thrusting (đẩy mạnh, xô đẩy) his hips (hông, khớp háng) at the cone (nón, tín hiệu báo bão (hình nón)). When he was stopped, police noticed a white substance (chất trắng) on the floor (trên sàn) that was not cocaine. Smith, from nearby St Helens, admitted to police that he was worse for wear and had snorted (khịt khịt mũi) white powder that was given to him by friends to help perk him up.

...He was arrested for possession of a Class A drug but later de-arrested when it turned out the white substance was not a drug at all. Instead he faced charges of outraging public decency.

"What's the big idea?" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Wonderlane on Unsplash

"What's the big idea?" có nghĩa là nuôi ý định điên rồ gì trong đầu thế. Câu hỏi này bày tỏ sự thất vọng và khó chịu về điều đang xảy ra và muốn hỏi nguyên nhân hoặc động cơ phía sau hành động đó là gì.

Ví dụ
And this week Sara Cox returns to the great outdoors to play Cupid as she's back on the BBC with a second series of her farm-based dating show, Love In The Countryside. But what's the big idea behind it all and how does it work?

At times (thỉnh thoảng) Pinsky has been more interested in “what’s the big idea?” than in nurturing “little baby nascent ideas,” says Rebecca Selden, a marine ecologist (nhà hải dương học) who joined the lab in 2015. (Pinsky concurs, noting that he once had a reputation as “Dr. No.”)

What’s the big idea?” asks Nanny, and the collective speaker (diễn giả) of the novel thinks, “That was the question, really. The thing is, we were all caught in the flood of time but without a back-pool or sluggish eddy or swamp root or anything to catch on, to get a grip on (lôi cuốn, thu hút), to stop long enough to have a look at what we were becoming or had become.”

"Gone with the wind" nghĩa là gì?

"Gone with the wind" = bay theo làn gió/cuốn theo chiều gió -> nghĩa là biến mất hoàn toàn.

Ví dụ
Barney also said he hasn’t heard much discussion about taxes — which he said have continued to go up since Mitchell took office - or other controversies (cuộc tranh luận) that have occurred during Mitchell’s tenure (nhiệm kì). “It’s like these things come and go with the wind,” Barney said.

I don’t think this song has any deeper (ẩn sâu) meaning (ý nghĩa) to be discovered. It’s about a guy who’s jumping on a train to get away. Leaving this woman behind. He doesn’t know where he’s going…he just knows he’s got to get away. That’s it. “Train roll on. On down the line. Won’t you please take me far away?…..Tuesday’s gone with the wind….my woman’s gone with the wind.”

What I feared losing the most, the press card issued (phát hành) by the UAE National Media Council that said I was an accredited (được công nhận) journalist (nhà báo), was gone with the wind as was my Emirates ID, my driver's and vehicle licence.
