"Have a nodding acquaintance" nghĩa là gì?

Xin chào Photo by Moose Photos from Pexels

"have a nodding acquaintance with someone or something" có từ acquaintance là hiểu biết sơ sài, người quen -> hiểu biết chút ít về ai hay cái gì đó.

Ví dụ
The problem is that most of the people who have raised these issues, particularly in the government, none of them are specialists. I don’t think any of them even have a nodding acquaintance with statistics.

When would we start discussing the real challenges (khó khăn, thách thức) of a language policy? How do we counter (chống lại) this growing menace of English-medium schools where neither the parents nor the teachers have a nodding acquaintance with English?

Chances are you've been invited to the wedding of a person you only have a nodding acquaintance with. This can be your office colleague (đồng nghiệp), a friend of a friend, or even someone in your neighbourhood whom you occasionally say “hello” to. The prospect of getting to eat some buttery chicken curry is inviting, for sure, but we all know you cannot show up empty-handed either.

"Back and fill" nghĩa là gì?

"Back and fill" nghĩa là di chuyển các cánh buồm của tàu theo kiểu xen kẽ để phù hợp với gió trong một kênh hẹp; thay đổi hướng liên tục; lưỡng lự, do dự.

Ví dụ
Past couple of years, Berkshire as a stock has backed and filled, tracking a trading range between $190 and $220 a share. You could’ve fallen asleep as a shareholder.

Five years ago, Alibaba traded at $120 and has backed and filled between $200 and $130 past couple of years. Maybe it carries an “inscrutable” (khó hiểu) stigma, but it gets my money.

Yes, the gold price may yet decline (giảm) for awhile, even down to 1250, as it "backs and fills"- preparatory (mở đầu) to a highly probable resumption of the uptrend. Or the decline might be quite shallow. There's just no way to know for sure. As with so much else in life, it's a lot about probabilities.

"Back in (someone's) box" = trở về với chiếc hộp của mình -> cụm từ này nghĩa là quay trở lại vị trí mà ai đó ít được để ý hơn; trở lại hình ảnh thiếu sôi nổi.

Ví dụ
And we say, ‘No, no you’ve got to get back in your box here’. The backlash is huge and it is them who are creating division and destroying our culture and that is ultimately what we boo. We boo our discomfort.

NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance has suggested three rebel (nổi loạn, chống đối) MPs should get "back in their box" after they called off a "laughable" leadership spill motion against the state premier.

People of all ages oppose VAR, but only those who are older have their age used as a criticism of their standpoint (quan điểm, lập trường). We are the Luddites, the old geezers (ông già) who are out of touch. Back in your box, granddad, this is the future calling. Stop living in the past. Get with the programme. Technology is the future, you old fart.

A unique (độc đáo) celebration (ăn mừng) sent the crowd into a frenzy (điên cuồng, mê loạn) during No. 9 Penn State's clash with Indiana at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pennsylvania.

As seen in the following video from Paddy Cotter on Twitter, a condom-turned-balloon floated into the end zone following a Penn State touchdown and then popped, much to the delight of the Nittany Lions faithful:

The high jinks (trò đùa tinh nghịch) came in the midst of a hugely important game for both teams, as Penn State entered with an overall record of 8-1 and conference record of 5-1, while Indiana entered 7-2 with a 4-2 mark in Big Ten play.

A woman took to Nextdoor app after she said she saw someone putting a condom (bao cao su) on someone's tailpipe (ống xả).

We talked with an auto expert about this prank (trò chơi khăm), to find out if it could damage your car.

...Experts say it's probably a good idea to check your pipes.

"More than likely, if they're doing it, it's going to work on a vehicle like this where it has a round tailpipe, so it's just where that exhaust gas is going to come out, If the vehicle was old and had a lot of miles, maybe the back pressure could cause some issues in the motor," said Hutchens. "I mean, if it were thick enough, maybe it would cause a no-start, but I think, for the most part, it's just going to be a prank."

You can buy a belly button online. It can be an innie, outtie, twisted to the left or the right, and placed on a virtual body. You can also buy a variety of penises, pubic hair, breasts, and tongues, all of which can be tweaked to look however you want. Cobble these together, use a photograph to algorithmically (thuật toán) generate a person’s face, and you might be able to make a 3D avatar of someone who is walking around in real life. Import them into another program, and you can have sex with them in virtual reality, without that person ever giving consent (đồng ý).

...Some software that's already available automates (tự động hóa) much of the process for creating the 3D likenesses of real people. Rendering a realistic human is a process which historically required the specialized technical knowledge of teams of artists in game and special effects studios. Those studios, traditionally, have to obtain the rights to use someone's likeness before rendering them, but many hobbyists seemingly make avatars of anyone, with or without their consent.

"Dust bunny" nghĩa là gì?

Dọn nhanh không về vợ mắng. Photo by Isaac Taylor from Pexels

"Dust bunny" không phải bụi của thỏ mà ý nói đến đống bụi bẩn bị tích tụ vì không được dọn dẹp.

Ví dụ
Or the way dust and dog hair can be counted on to gather in bundles (bó). My wife likes to call them “dust bunnies.” They most often form and congregate (tụ lại) under or behind large, heavy objects, like couches, desks and major appliances.

Today the bedroom, tomorrow the guest room, I thought to myself, planning my strategy for the week as I crawled around on the floor with a mop rag (giẻ lau) and a small vacuum cleaner (máy hút bụi nhỏ). I left no dust bunny at rest, no corner un-mopped (chưa được lau).

In our house the dust bunnies chase the dog. According to Chemist Christine in her Parentables post Why Your Kids' First Pet Should be a Dust Bunny, this might be a good thing, because of the "hygiene hypothesis." (giả thuyết vệ sinh) But new research confirms that dust bunnies can expose people to PBDE flame retardants (chất hãm bắt cháy) that Environmental Health Perspectives says may cause "decreased IQ and neurodevelopmental impairments (suy yếu sự phát triển thần kinh) in children and to fertility issues (vấn đề sinh sản) in adults."

"Jive turkey" nghĩa là gì?

Ra cái vẻ tính toán thông minh. Photo by Mikechie Esparagoza from Pexels

"Jive turkey" = con gà tây ngu ngốc. "Jive" tiếng lóng (danh từ) nghĩa là chuyện vớ vẩn, huyên thuyên, rỗng tuếch. "Jive turkey" ý chỉ người ngu ngốc, không đáng tin.

Ví dụ
So don't be the jive turkey that starts a political discussion!

You look like a jive turkey with that shit. Hollywood is full of ignorant fools, but there ain’t no way this actually happened, unless the exec ( executive - người điều hành) was trying to be funny.

So where do I start with this? I wanted to get you guys something to read for Thanksgiving so you could get away from the relatives, and this is more than adequate. The day Jim Harbaugh called critics “jive turkey gobblers.”

Mind you, she could have prepared her own plate and sat at the table, but she insists that a host must give her special treatment because she would not have had to prepare her own plate had she dined solo at a sit-down restaurant (excluding buffets and smorgasbords (tương tự buffet)). Undoubtedly, this guest is being a jive turkey, if not an insufferable (không thể chịu đựng) pig.

"Wild turkey" nghĩa là gì?

Hoang dã mà béo tốt ghê. Photo by ASHISH SHARMA from Pexels

"Wild turkey" = gà tây hoang dã, chưa được thuần hóa. "Wild Turkey" cũng là tên một thương hiệu rượu whiskey ngô của Mỹ.

Ví dụ
Wild turkeys are a familiar sight throughout New Hampshire, where flocks strut (từng đàn bước oai vệ) along roadsides and wander through backyards.

By the time Thanksgiving became an official U.S. holiday in 1863, wild turkeys had nearly disappeared. But Depression-era (thời kỳ Đại suy thoái) shifts in land use helped the animals rebound (phục hồi).

According to company lore (truyền thuyết), Wild Turkey got its name after a hunting expedition. A distillery (nhà máy rượu) executive named Thomas McCarthy brought some whiskey samples from then-owner Austin Nichols & Co. on a wild turkey hunt.

Wild Turkey’s roots trace (nguồn gốc) to 1855, when Austin Nichols & Co., a wholesale grocer (tay bán buôn tạp phẩm), set up shop in Lawrenceburg, Ky. That company eventually took over what would become Wild Turkey Bourbon, now one of the top-selling whiskey brands in the country.

"Poor as a Job's turkey" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Guduru Ajay bhargav from Pexels

"(As) poor as a Job's turkey" = nghèo khổ như con gà tây cùa Job -> nghèo đói, trắng tay, hoặc là khó khăn tài chính. "Job" là nhân vật trong Kinh thánh, toàn bộ tài sản, phúc lợi đều bị Chúa tước đi để thử thách đức tin.

Ví dụ
Always had to suck up to people I couldn't stand because they had money and I was poor as Job's turkey. You don't know what that's like.

Before they got their start, the majority (phần lớn) of them were as poor as Job's turkey.” “Now Leisenring why do you say Job's turkey?” remonstrated (rầy la) his wife. “Why don't you say somebody else's turkey? How do you know that Job's turkey was so poor?"

"They're as poor as Job's turkey, for all I know." " How do you know how poor Job's turkey was ? " I inquired. Maggie did not answer. I have since found out that Job's turkey was so poor that he only had one feather in his tail, and so weak that he had to lean against the fence (dựa vào hàng rào) to gobble (ăn).

"Turkey slap" nghĩa là gì?

Chỉ là hình minh họa thôi, "turkey slap" không dùng tay. Photo courtesy Thomas Bruce

"Turkey slap" (tiếng lóng) có nghĩa là tát/ tấn công ai bằng dương vật.

Ví dụ
'You're not going to turkey slap me are you?' And with those seemingly banal (tầm thường) words in the early morning of 1 July 2006 in a Gold Coast television studio masquerading (giả dạng) as a commune (đàm luận), reality television took a hit from which it couldn't recover.

In one episode two young men performing what is known as the “turkey slap” on a young woman on live television. For those of you who may not be aware, a “turkey slap” is when a naked guy straddles (dạng chân) the head of a sleeping girl, then proceeds to drag his scrotum (bìu) across her face.

It may be the biggest challenge faced by Australian reality television since the infamous “turkey slap” assault-by-genitals (tấn công bằng bộ phận sinh dục) incident that pitted Big Brother against prime minister (thủ tướng) John Howard in a showdown over on-air morality (đạo đức) 13 years ago.

“Go cold turkey” nghĩa là gì?

Photo by fotografierende from Pexels

“Go cold turkey” hoặc "quit/kick (something) cold turkey" có nghĩa “cai”, dừng làm điều gì (thói quen xấu hoặc chất gây nghiện) một cách đột ngột, thay vì thay đổi một cách dần dần, như cai rượu, thuốc lá hay thuốc phiện.

Ví dụ
Before you jump on the vegetarian bandwagon (phong trào ăn chay) starting a new diet requires a load of willpower (sức mạnh ý chí), planning, and effort and going cold turkey from day one is never a good idea.

A September 2018 study of 1,250 smokers found those who quit cold turkey had an immediate reduction (giảm ngay lập tức) of nicotine in their bodies with a resulting greater decline in harmful health effects over time.

Going completely cold turkey on Star Wars is something that diehard (cuồng nhiệt) fans probably wouldn’t be able to do since obviously it’s out there and being pushed in every possible way every time a person goes on the internet, watches TV, or even steps outside and has to look at the various advertising gimmicks (chiêu trò quảng cáo) that are being used over and over and over again.

"Slow on the draw" nghĩa là gì?

Bấm máy chưa? Chụp gì mà lâu thế! Photo by KAL VISUALS on Unsplash

"Slow on the draw" nghĩa đen là chậm chạp trong động tác rút súng.

Unlike many US companies that which have been slow on the draw with international, Starz is way ahead of the curve (chỗ quanh co).

In practice, my husband and I have been slow on the draw, usually sending our contributions (các khoản đóng góp) in at the beginning of the year after the tax year that the IRA contributions count toward.

One of highlights for the brand new strategy is the introduction of cutting-edge (tiên tiến) 5G and AI technologies. Limited by the relatively slow network speed and weaker algorithm (thuật toán), vehicles (vật truyền/phương tiện truyền tải) currently delivered on the market are not intelligent enough. Some smart functions are unworkable or slow on the draw in areas with poor network services or even without Internet signal, which will lead to terrible experience for users.

So-Young International, China’s largest online marketplace for cosmetic surgery (phẫu thuật thẩm mỹ) services, is venturing offline, opening a “shared clinic” earlier this month where patients and doctors who find each other online can book an operating room, come in for the scheduled time slot, and go under the knife (trải qua phẫu thuật).

At a press conference Friday, the Nasdaq-listed company — along with BeauCare Clinics, a Chinese chain of beauty centers — jointly announced the opening of a shared medical cosmetology clinic in Beijing. The launch marks the first time the country’s long-promoted concept of “shared health care” has entered the field of cosmetic surgery.

“Shared clinics allow physicians to focus their time on the surgery itself, and this greatly reduces the cost (giảm chi phí) for cosmetic surgeons (bác sĩ phẫu thuật) who want to start their own businesses,”

Stories of English tutoring centers vanishing (biến mất) and leaving clients out of pocket (rỗng túi) for thousands of yuan have spread like wildfire (lan nhanh như cháy rừng) across the Chinese internet in recent months. The officer in Pudong declines to reveal the specific number of such cases his department is dealing with, but says it is, “a newly emerging phenomenon this year.”

The wave of closures has taken many by surprise. The market for English language education was previously booming as a growing number of ambitious (tham vọng) parents looked to give their kids a head start in life by signing them up for private classes from as young as 3. China’s English training market is predicted to be worth 220 billion yuan by 2020, up from 104 billion in 2015, according to Beijing-based research firm Bosi Data Research Center. But schools have been plunged into crisis this year amid intensifying competition (cạnh tranh ngày càng tăng) and a government crackdown (đàn áp) on illegal (không phép, bất hợp pháp) practices within the industry.

"Back o' Bourke" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Halanna Halila on Unsplash

"Back o' Bourke" nghĩa là nơi xa xôi, vùng hẻo lánh, vùng sâu vùng xa (thường ở nước Úc).

Ví dụ
Paddocks are barren out the back o’ Bourke and beyond, but the drought reaching Sydney’s doorstep is just as dire (kinh khủng, khốc liệt).

On the eastern side of the Darling River in outback New South Wales — literally the 'back o' Bourke' — you'll find a town with a tiny population that inflates to the thousands one race weekend every August.

I never dreamt it develop and be supported to the extent it has. The dedication of all the supporting schools to travel out to Back O’ Bourke is just amazing. It’s created a unique opportunity for kids to compete with their primary school contemporaries (bạn) across outback and regional NSW, meet some recognisable characters of the NRL and everyone gets to take something away from the event – not just the winning team.

"Back office" nghĩa là gì?

"Back office" nghĩa là bộ phận nội cần; bộ phận hậu phương; phòng hỗ trợ (bộ phận không liên lạc trực tiếp với khách hàng, không đưa ra quyết sách).

Ví dụ
Skimmers are increasingly stealing credit card data from convenience-store (cửa hàng tiện lợi) retailers through the back office, payment processor Visa said in two recent security alerts.

Since then, the concept has evolved and developed so that it can be fully used for back-office and operational digitalization – which is important because companies often neglect the importance of back-office operations and the impact on the customer journey.

The back office is where business operations that support the main customer-facing parts of the organization operate. It handles (giải quyết) finance and accounting, human resources (nhân sự), supply chain (dây chuyền cung ứng) and logistics operations, IT and support technology, and all the other bits and pieces of the enterprise that are needed to make the rest of the operation work smoothly.

"Hometown honey" nghĩa là gì?

Mong đợi một người. Photo by: Aziz Acharki on Unsplash

"Hometown honey" -> nghĩa là người yêu nơi quê nhà (khi ai đó đi học đại học trên tỉnh, đi làm xa...).

Ví dụ
Hoping to reconnect with a hometown honey this week, Libra? Venus enters your home and family arena on Monday, attracting compassionate (lòng thương, lòng trắc ẩn) partners who keep your tender (mềm yếu) heart safe.

Andy is in a faithful (chung thủy) relationship with his high school sweetheart Katy, but they attend different colleges and the strain is starting to show. His friends think he should relegate (loại bỏ) her to “hometown honey” status so he can fully enjoy his college years, and the issue (tình huống) is complicated (phức tạp) when she transfers to his school to be closer to him.

So, the first, fast assumption (cho rằng, giả định) would be that the role in question is Lana Lang, Clark’s hometown honey. That makes a certain amount of sense, seeing as the film is a reboot, and very possibly taking Superman back to his origins.
