"Match stride for stride" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Маша Реймерс from Pexels

"(Match someone) stride for stride" = bước theo bước -> làm tốt như người còn lại (về mọi mặt như kỹ năng, tốc độ...)

Ví dụ
Once again I struggle (đấu tranh) equally hard with my own competitive urge (thúc đẩy cạnh tranh) to prove that I can match them stride for stride.

Her heels clattered (kêu lọc cọc) as she dutifully accompanied (nghiêm túc hộ tống) him, her steps, he noted, matching his stride for stride. For a Little Match Girl, she wasn't all that little. In fact, she was close to his height.

Matching Big Jim stride for stride is no easy matter (the clue (manh mối) is in the name), and by the time we reach the car park I feel that I've had a good work-out. It's pitch-black (tối đen như mực) by now, which is probably just as well.

Death had walked through those hallways (hành lang) not long before and I wasn't all that keen to match him stride for stride. If Derwent noticed, he didn't say anything about it. He might even have felt the same way, but there was no point in asking him.

"Stride out (of some place)" là bước ra từ đâu với sải bước dài, và đi một cách vội vã, quyết liệt.

Ví dụ
Musical entertainment (âm nhạc giải trí) will add to the occasion as well as the opportunity (cơ hội) to simply sit and soak up (hòa mình) the atmosphere (bầu không khí) as Steampunk fans stride out in costume.

Brother and sister Colin Davies and Morwenna Mullen are not messing (làm bẩn) about. They stride out to the water’s edge (rìa nước) with long sticks and their trousers (quần) made watertight (kín nước) with plastic bags and bright yellow gaffer tape. They swear it works, most of the time.

When the end comes, some will not be waiting in a bunker (hố cát) for a saviour (vị cứu tinh). They will stride out into the wilderness (vùng hoang dã) with confidence, ready to hunt and kill a deer, tan its hide (đánh nhừ tử) and sleep easily in a hand-built shelter (chỗ ẩn náu), close by a fire they made from the force of their two palms on a stick.

"Stride into (some place)" = bước dài đến -> đi đến đâu một cách vội vã nhưng mạnh mẽ, tự tin.

Ví dụ
Last oasis, the hotly anticipated survival adventure (cuộc phiêu lưu sinh tồn), is set to stride into Steam Early Access on 26 March.

That’s why Thursday’s decision (quyết định) to cancel the CIF state basketball playoffs (chung kết) stings (nhức nhối) even more for Fulton’s Panthers — they had just hit their stride heading into Friday’s state final.

For Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and the rest of this richly-assembled (quy tụ hoàn hảo) side, every time they do not win the Champions League they are deemed (coi là) failures. That night PSG’s reputation (danh tiếng) and confidence took a hammering (trận đòn), but this year, the competition appears to be opening up for them as they stride into the quarter-finals (tứ kết).

"Without breaking stride" nghĩa là gì?

Nhìn đã thấy đau cơ rồi. Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels

"Without breaking (one's) stride" có từ "stride" là sải chân, sải bước -> không làm dừng lại điều bạn đang làm, không làm chùn bước.

Ví dụ
Without breaking stride, Larry snatches (giật lấy) the selfie-stick, breaks it over his leg and continues the conversation (cuộc nói chuyện) as if nothing happened.

“Maa-ahm,” he pleads (cầu xin), stretching (kéo dài) the word to two syllables. “My stomach (dạ dày) huuurts.”
“Keep walking. You’ll feel better,” she says without breaking stride.

Now iOS users who want to stream using Stream Deck Mobile can take full advantage of the "Hey Siri" function (chức năng) on their iPhone, allowing you to seamlessly control (điều khiển) your stream without breaking stride as you play.

Maybe he’s entering my favorite Dunkin’ Donuts in the early morning and grabbing (chộp lấy) his cup of Joe without breaking stride—the staff (nhân viên) see him coming and it's poured before he arrives. Or maybe he’s hustling (hối hả) into the office of my chiropractor (bác sỹ chỉnh hình), Dr. Roy Love, smiling warmly at fellow patients (bệnh nhân).

"Done to death" nghĩa là gì?

Phim gì quen thế! Photo courtesy: mojahideen tomas

"Done to death" = làm tới chết -> lặp đi lặp lại đến mức nhàm chán.

Ví dụ
That theme (đề tài) has been done to death by generations of poets.

Although “Assassins” debuted in 1990 and a 2004 revival won five Tony Awards, it hasn’t been done to death, so to speak, locally or in touring productions. That’s reason enough to see it, and you can go confident that you’re in for a creative and intelligent production.

It may be something of a cinephile cliché (sáo rỗng điện ảnh), but I love a good mob picture (phim xã hội đen). That being said, it has been a long time since the two Godfather films (there is no third film, that was just a bad dream you had). Though Martin Scorsese just proved once again that he is still capable of breathing life into the genre, it’s hard not to feel that, on the whole, the style has just been done to death. The rather procedural first forty minutes of The Traitor—Italy’s submission for the Academy Award for Best International film—did little to change my feelings, but as Michael Corleone didn’t say in a sequel that definitely does not exist, “Every time I think I’m out, they pull me back in!”

"Dead wood" nghĩa là gì?

Này là gì đây? Photo courtesy: Dennis Jarvis

"Dead wood" = gỗ cây chết -> người hay đồ vật không còn hữu dụng hoặc hiệu quả.

Ví dụ
There's definitely a case for decriminalising (hợp pháp hóa) the removal of dead wood.

We have PennDOT and the Turnpike Commission in Pennsylvania. Why? The commission must pay PennDOT millions of dollars per year. The commission is in debt. Duh! Combine both bureaucratic agencies, get rid of the dead wood and you will have efficiency.

Internet forms the mainstay (trụ cột chính) of the current times and is in fact a boon companion of man in the modern times. Internet is the constitutive element of the current times, sans (không có) which life seems to be a dead wood and bereft (thiếu mất) of technological assimilation (đồng hóa).

One of the first things I did was clarify (làm rõ) lines of authority (phân tách thẩm quyền) within the NSC staff dealing with national (quốc gia) and homeland (nội địa) security (an ninh) issues, since they were at bottom exactly the same thing. I also swept away duplicative, competitive billets and fiefdoms (thái ấp, đất phong), and made it possible for the NSC staff to speak with one voice. With the deadwood cleared away, we were off, although incredibly frustrating bureaucratic battles and obstructionism still lay ahead. We needed to do two things: first, we needed a Trump Administration cyber strategy, and second, we needed to scrap the Obama-era rules and replace them with a more agile, expeditious (chóng vánh, mau lẹ, khẩn trương) decision-making structure.

"Hit your straps" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by bongkarn thanyakij from Pexels

"Hit (one's) straps" = đánh bằng dây da, đánh bằng roi da -> đẩy tốc độ di chuyển nhanh hơn. Nghĩa bóng là cố hết sức để trở nên thành thạo (trong công việc, lĩnh vực cụ thể). "Hit one's stride" cũng có nghĩa tương tự.

Ví dụ
Whatever the process (quá trình) the band really hit their straps when Gary Young joined the band as drummer (tay trống).

The twenty-year-old Sydneysider was a clear-eyed young man from the beach suburb (ngoại ô) of Bondi and only just hitting his straps in combat (trận chiến) with a couple of recent claims to his name.

Can you imagine being allowed forty, fifty or sixty years to hit your straps? They say late bloomers are rare not because talent (tài năng) in older people is rare, but because talents that might develop when we're older often don't get the chance to shine (tỏa sáng).

Not from the conference (hội nghị), which was fantastic (tuyệt vời), and they'd really hit their straps. By then most of the attendees (người tham dự) knew who they were —who Angus was, at any rate—had heard that he'd volunteered (tình nguyện) to help them update their brand (thương hiệu) and someone had researched (nghiên cứu) him enough to know he was doing the same for Remède.

"Strap on a pair" nghĩa là gì?

Đàn ông lên tí nào. Photo by samer daboul from Pexels

"Strap on a pair" có từ "strap" là buộc lại, cột lại, còn từ "pair" ý chỉ hai cục tinh hoàn ở nam giới. Cụm từ này có sử dụng khi kêu ai đó hãy hành động mạnh mẽ, dứt khoát, tự tin hơn.

Ví dụ
I have also learned that I truly have to strap on a pair, especially for my children. I realize that I am all they've got.

You wanna survive (sống sót)? Ya strap on a pair, man. . . Cojones muy grandes! . . . Believe me, cuz. . . if ya don't show spirit (tinh thần), they'll take it as weakness (điểm yếu).”

But his parents would have told Jack about it anyway, so he was just going to have to strap on a pair and do his best. He shut down his computer and went to find Rose to share all the news.

Her newest role (vai trò) as TikTok roller skating icon (biểu tượng trượt patin) is perhaps her most compelling (hấp dẫn) to date, and certainly her most joyful. Whether she's gliding (trượt) solo or with a dance partner, it's hard not to smile at her videos and want to strap on a pair yourself! It's all in her motto: "Don't hate. roller skate!"

"Strap on the feedbag" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Nguyễn Khanh from Pexels

"Strap on the (old) feedbag" hoặc "strap on the (old) nosebag" đều có nghĩa là ăn uống, dùng bữa. "Feedbag" hay "nosebag" là túi đựng đồ ăn cho ngựa thường treo trước mũi nó.

Ví dụ
In the Australian vernacular (bản địa), the term 'strap on the feed bag' historically means to sit down for a hearty meal.

Over the past two weeks, I went on the hunt (săn) to find some big, cheap eats. My goal for this assignment (nhiệm vụ): Strap on the feedbag while keeping the bill (hóa đơn) as low as possible.

When they do eat, they’re like your uncle on Thanksgiving (Lễ tại ơn) who straps on the feedbag. “They’ll eat everything. It doesn’t matter what put in front of them — plant, seed, a predator (loài săn mồi) on other animals, insects (côn trùng)."

What does Marcelo Bielsa want from a midfielder (tiền vệ)?
Well, they have to be relentlessly (không ngừng) hard-working, more than willing to strap on the nose bag and chew up the hard yards every single matchday (ngày diễn ra trận đấu).

Một chút tưởng tượng về "strapon". :D Photo by Dainis Graveris from Pexels

"Strap (something) on/onto/down/into" đều có nghĩa là buộc, cuốn cái gì lại bằng dây/đai để bảo vệ. "Strap-on" danh từ là một "sextoy" - dương vật giả đeo dây.

Ví dụ
Two horses from a neighbouring field (cánh đồng lân cận) had broken a strap onto his gate and one started feeding on the grass. But the other made its way into Mr Tucker's 24ft by 14ft swimming pool and couldn't free itself.

Few are more acutely aware of the problem than Jones. Widely recognised (công nhận) as one of the best freeriders ever to strap on a snowboard (ván trượt tuyết), he’s enjoyed a long and decorated (tặng huy chương) career that’s seen him win accolades that include Snowboarder magazine’s “Big Mountain Rider of the Year” a record-breaking (phá kỷ lục) 10 times.

Q: Did you actually get to wear a strap-on for this episode?
Aisha Dee: Yes! They actually made it special for me, the costume department (bộ phận trang phục), because it was kind of tricky (khó) to figure out like how do we show a strap-on given we're not really able to show too much on the show, on network television.

"Leave open the possibility of" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Trinity Kubassek from Pexels

'Leave open the possibility of something or doing something' = để mở cơ hội cho thứ gì hay làm gì, duy trì hoặc tạo ra khả năng làm được điều gì đó trong tương lai.

Ví dụ
SDHSAA executive director Dan Swartos said by postponing the events rather than cancelling them entirely, they leave open the possibility of completing the events when the COVID-19 situation changes.

Economists said the ECB’s decision to hold off on a rate cut, given that its deposit rate already stands at -0.5%, was understandable, though Lagarde did leave open the possibility of lowering rates (tỉ lệ) further if needed.

“It’s something we don’t know,” Gillespie said. “We didn’t want to put a final stamp on it because we wanted to leave open the possibility of continuation. Whether the chances are good or slim, I don’t know. It could get to the point where it’s logistically impossible.”

"Beyond the realm of possibility" nghĩa là gì?

Đưa tay ra nào, nằm lấy tay em này Photo by Eduarda Portrait from Pexels

'Beyond the realm(s) of possibility' = ngoài khả năng, vượt ra khỏi khả năng có thể làm gì, không thể làm được, không thể xảy ra.

Ví dụ
The situation will be re-evaluated next month, and a decision will be made on whether to wait longer to get games back underway. It isn’t beyond the realm of possibility that the season is canceled altogether as NBA commissioner Adam Silver admitted on Thursday.

The Mets visited the Miami Marlins for a Grapefruit League game on Monday, March 9, at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla. The Yankees visited the Marlins on Wednesday, March 11. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Mitchell, Jr. transmitted the virus to his father in New York, who then transmitted it to a Mets player upon his return from New York City.

Will Iran’s regime survive the current crisis intact? It might. But it is not beyond the realm of possibility to think that, before it runs its course, the coronavirus might end up accomplishing what years of Western actions could not: the collapse of the clerical regime (chế độ tăng lữ) in Tehran. It has, after all, already succeeded in demolishing the last vestiges (dấu tích) of the regime’s legitimacy.

"Strap (someone/ something) in" = buộc, cuốn dây/đai lại để bảo vệ ai, cái gì. Nghĩa bóng là hãy cẩn thận, hãy bảo vệ bản thân trước các tình huống bất ngờ sắp tới.

Ví dụ
My sleeping habits are pretty awful. Despite being well aware of the minutes ticking closer to 10.30pm (the time I should be tucked up (gập lên) in bed and nodding off (gà gật)), I select the next episode of whichever (bất kỳ) Netflix show I’m currently binge-watching (xem liên tục) and strap in for another 50 minutes.

Biotech (công nghệ sinh học) and pharmaceutical-stock (dược phẩm) investors had better strap in for some upsetting (khó chịu) news. Efforts (nỗ lực) to slow down the rapidly spreading (lan rộng nhanh chóng) coronavirus so hospitals have a chance to keep up are going to affect the industry in more ways than one.

Like last year's list, the goal here is to celebrate the best action titles of 2020 on the big screen (màn ảnh rộng) and on streaming platforms (nền tảng trực tuyến), which could mean superhero epics (thiên anh hùng ca), and, more likely than not, at least one movie starring Vin Diesel. We'll be updating this list as the year goes on, so strap in.

"In heaven's name" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Min An on Pexels

"In heaven's name" = nhân danh thiên đàng -> câu này được dùng khi hỏi để biểu lộ sự ngạc nhiên hay tức giận; ôi chúa ơi, vậy ư/như thế sao?.

Ví dụ
How, in heaven’s name, is that hereditary (di truyền)? Or respectful of First Nations’ customs? Maybe they should be called arbitrary chiefs, rather than hereditary ones.

What, in heaven’s name, is an eight-year-old child doing on social media in the first instance? Am I so out of touch that I fail to understand what would possess a parent or guardian to allow a child as young as eight to have access to the world of snapchats, Facebook, Instagram or whatever other platform is out there that allows children to interact online.

Why in heaven’s name has someone who professed to worship John McCain lick (liếm) the boots of a man who repeatedly defamed his hero? … Various writers have ascribed various psychological motives for his disgraceful sycophancy (thói nịnh hót). But in the end, I still fall back on the words English biographer John Boswell wrote to Samuel Johnson. ‘Men’s hearts are concealed. But their actions are open to scrutiny.’

Concerns at the level of F-gas non-compliance, particularly within the supply chain, has prompted Karl Richardson, MD of Derby-based Logicool Air Conditioning & Heat Pumps, to speak out.

Roads watchdog (người giám sát) calls for road users to name and shame poor road signs. Road users are being urged (thúc giục) to report poor road signs on motorways and A-roads in a bid to force Highways England to improve signage across the UK’s major roads network.

Priyanka slams UP govt over banners in Lucknow to name and shame activists. The banners came up at major road crossings in Lucknow late on Thursday night on the directions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, an official said.

...Trump’s policy goal with his tariffs was to move supply chains, but the reality, O’Neill said, is that dependence on China is good. She even warned what would happen if we tried to stop our reliance on Chinese products. “There is going to be a spike in demand and there is not enough product to fill that gap,” said said. “So the price is only going to go up and we are going to have product shortages.”

Indeed, we have shortages, and they are getting worse. But they are not happening because we reduced our dependency on China, but because we did not.

Even as Trump was putting up tariffs, his administration wasn’t focused on changing the other drivers of policy leading to offshoring. For instance, in 2017, a Chinese company called Humanwell located in Wuhan bought Ritedose, one of the two large respiratory companies that does contract manufacturing for inhalation and ophthalmic (viêm mắt) products. Humanwell had previously bought PuraCap Pharma in 2008 and Epic Pharma in 2016, which are oral solid dose generic companies in the US, and it aims for monopoly power. The corporation bragged in an investor presentation on investment bank Jeffries website about how it is a sole source producer of drugs. (I did the highlighting on the slide.)

A recession (suy thoái) is likely and perhaps optimal (not in the sense of desirable but in the sense of the best we can do under the circumstances).

Mitigating the health crisis (giảm thiểu tác động khủng hoảng y tế) is the first priority (ưu tiên hàng đầu). Give Dr. Fauci anything he asks for.

Fiscal policymakers (lập chính sách tài khóa) should focus not on aggregate demand (tổng cầu) but on social insurance (bảo hiểm xã hội). Financial planners tell people to have six months of living expenses in an emergency fund (quỹ phòng hộ khẩn cấp). Sadly, many people do not. Considering the difficulty of identifying the truly needy and the problems inherent in trying to do so, sending every American a $1000 check asap would be a good start. A payroll tax cut makes little sense in this circumstance, because it does nothing for those who can't work.

There are times to worry about the growing government debt (nợ công của chính phủ gia tăng). This is not one of them.

Externalities abound. Helping people over their current economic difficulties may keep more people at home, reducing the spread of the virus. In other words, there are efficiency as well as equity arguments for social insurance.

Monetary policy should focus on maintaining liquidity. The Fed's role in setting interest rates is less important than its role as the lender of last resort (người cho vay cuối cùng). If the Fed thinks that its hands are excessively tied in this regard by Dodd-Frank rules, Congress should untie them quickly.

President Trump should shut-the-hell-up. He should defer to those who know what they are talking about. Sadly, this is unlikely to occur.

Consuming a western diet for as little as one week can subtly impair (làm suy yếu, làm sút kém; làm hư hỏng, làm hư hại) brain function (chức năng não bộ) and encourage slim and otherwise healthy young people to overeat.

Researchers found that after seven days on a high saturated fat, high added sugar diet, volunteers in their 20s scored worse on memory tests and found junk food more desirable immediately after they had finished a meal.

The finding suggests that a western diet makes it harder for people to regulate their appetite, and points to disruption in a brain region (vùng não bộ) called the hippocampus as the possible cause.

"Heave a sigh of relief" nghĩa là gì?

"Heave/breathe a sigh of relief" nghĩa là thở phào nhẹ nhõm.

The Fremantle Dockers are breathing a sigh of relief after forward Sam Switkowski was cleared of having the coronavirus.

Families all across our state can now breathe a sigh of relief that their health insurance (bảo hiểm y tế) company cannot deny them coverage for PANS and PANDAS treatment (điều trị).

"Bring into sharp relief" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Dids from Pexels

"Bring/ throw/out (something) into sharp relief" = đưa cái gì nổi lên -> nêu bật vấn đề gì.

Ví dụ
Two months after the weaknesses (suy yếu) of the China model were brought into sharp relief, now it was America’s turn. “The way the Chinese would phrase it is: ‘We passed the test. Now what about you?’,” says McGregor.

The coronavirus pandemic (đại dịch) is putting the failings of the U.S. health-care system (hệ thống chăm sóc sức khỏe) into sharp relief. U.S. citizens already ration medicine (phân chia thuốc), avoid care due to financial stress (căng thẳng tài chính), and use internet fundraisers (gây quỹ) to cover health costs.

Such closures (đóng cửa) will also throw into sharp relief the deep socioeconomic divides (phân chia kinh tế xã hội) in American education. Disadvantaged (hoàn cảnh khó khăn) families who rely the most on schools for stable services (dịch vụ ổn định), such as meals and access to learning materials (tài liệu), will be some of the most negatively affected.

"Light relief" = một chút nhẹ nhõm -> điều gì đó nhẹ nhàng, gây giải trí giúp giải tỏa tình trạng căng thẳng hoặc nhạt nhẽo.

Ví dụ
Netflix is good for a bit of light relief.

I'm a comedian (nghệ sỹ hài) and our role is to offer light relief.

Wairoa New World's Leana Cook and Czhaay Hau have brought some light relief for customers (khách hàng) fearing coronavirus spread (lây lan), with their choreographed (biên đạo) trolley sanitising routine (thói quen vệ sinh xe đẩy hàng).

As the COVID-19 sweeps (càn quét) around the world, we all know what we must do to minimize transmission (giảm thiểu sự lây truyền): keep washing our hands and try to avoid touching our faces too much. It’s easy to feel anxious (lo lắng) with the 24-hour drip-feed (nhỏ giọt) of news about the pandemic (đại dịch), so moments of light relief are welcome.

"Absolve from guilt" nghĩa là gì?

Về đôn. Vô tội thì thả. Thế thôi. Photo by Rosemary Ketchum from Pexels

"Absolve(d) from guilt" = xóa tội -> vô tội, xóa tan nghi ngờ, được ân xá.

Ví dụ
From the words of Christ (Chúa), therefore, we are not at liberty to infer (tự do suy luận), that Simon had been a debtor (con nợ) to a small amount, or that he was absolved from guilt.

The link between Iran and the Contras gave the scandal (bê bối) its name and also its focus. The narrower (thu hẹp) the focus, the easier it was to claim that the president was not a party to the crime and could therefore be absolved from guilt.

But he also knows, and he knows with a conviction (tin chắc) that has grown to become unshakeable (không thể lay chuyển), that he is completely absolved from guilt because Christ has paid all of the penalty (hình phạt) of all of his guilt and sin.

Let us learn, therefore, to turn our views in that direction (hướng), whenever we desire (mong) to be absolved from guilt. He now teaches more clearly, what we adverted (đề cập) to above — that God is propitious (tốt lành) to us, when he acknowledges us as righteous (công bằng).

:D Photo by Suzy Hazelwood from Pexels

"Guilt complex" = tội lỗi phức tạp -> cảm giác tội lỗi cực mạnh và kéo dài liên quan đến điều gì/ sự kiện nào đó. Ngược lại với "guilt-free" là chả cảm thấy có tội gì (dù có tội thật).

Ví dụ
And now our own Foreign Minister (Bộ trưởng Bộ Ngoại giao), Genscher, goes to Israel to give them money and weapons (vũ khí)—all because of our guilt complex. Do you think that's right?

Thanks to the mystery (bí ẩn) the director is shrouded (che giấu) in, we may never know if Nolan has some kind of guilt complex around someone he once lost in his life, but "Inception" may well be a big clue (manh mối).

In the ‘swinging 60s’ some leading figures (nhân vật hàng đầu) in our society began to believe that the people were developing a ‘guilt complex’ about the Ten Commandments (Mười điều răn), so they deliberately (cân nhắc) played down their significance.

What makes McMillions special (đặc biệt) is that it is essentially guilt-free true crime (tội phạm). If you, like me, consume a lot of true crime, you might sometimes be hit by the true crime guilt complex. Should we enjoy this? Should stories of other people’s misery (cảnh khốn khó) be entertainment (giải trí)?

"Dead name" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Rosemary Ketchum on Pexels

"Dead name" = cái tên đã chết -> nghĩa là tên khai sinh của người chuyển giới, tên trước khi họ chuyển sang giới tính khác.

Ví dụ
During my visits home, my parents have persisted (khăng khăng, đòi) in introducing me to others by my “dead” name — the female name I had growing up. I don’t think cisgender people can really understand what it feels like to be called the wrong name. I wouldn’t wish this feeling on anyone.

Texas law makes changing one’s identity (căn cước) more difficult, so using a passport, driver’s license or any approved legal document required to receive funds may not be enough to approve the claim. “If it’s in their dead name, they have a problem,” said Karri Bertrand, a family law attorney at O’Neil Wysocki Family Law in Dallas.

“At the moment, due to a bureaucratic (liên quan tới bộ máy quan liêu) mix-up and my own depression getting in the way of me following up on things, I’m a bit of a limbo with the gender recognition cert.” She added: “I have to use my old name for pretty much everything, what the trans community calls the dead name or birth name.
