"Before you can say knife" nghĩa là gì?

Chờ chút chạy tới liền. Photo by Ketut Subiyanto from Pexels

"Before you can say 'knife'" nghĩa là rất nhanh chóng, gần như ngay lập tức.

Ví dụ
If I say it's bathtime she's half way up the stairs before you can say knife.

Ginger, Ginger, before you can say knife she'll make you into a damned missionary (người truyền giáo).

Ten to one if you was to get mixed up in it there'd be half a dozen murders before you could say knife.

I probably won't be a secretary for long, not once they realise I've never been one before and don't know the ropes. Oh, I'll be back in the pool before you can say knife, see if I'm not.

"Be/sitting on a knife-edge" = ngồi trên lưỡi dao -> nghĩa là (trạng thái) lo lắng bồn chồn, như ngồi trên đống lửa.

Ví dụ
The result of the Green Party vote on the programme for government could be “on a knife edge,” party sources have said.

The future of a heritage railway rebuilt by volunteers over the course of 30 years has been left "on a knife edge" by the coronavirus crisis.

James Walsh, leader of the council said: “Town centre retail is on a knife edge in both Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, and we want to do as much as possible to encourage shoppers, cafe users and others to start using our town centres again. We are determined to do everything possible to assist our small business community to thrive again.”

Moss hopes to be elected as the next president of the Royal Institute of British Architects, the national representative body for architects and architecture, on a campaign for procurement (thu mua) reform that aims to place architects back “at the heart of the process”. Speaking to Place North West, he said: “At the moment, the business model of architect firms is on a knife edge.”

"Ring the knell of" nghĩa là gì?

Mỗi một nhân viên luôn nắm vai trò quan trọng trong công ty. Photo by Vernie Andrea from Pexels

"Ring the knell of (something)" hoặc " ring the death knell for" = đánh hồi chuông báo tử -> nghĩa là báo hiệu về sự kết thúc/hủy hoại của cái gì hoặc thông báo về đám tang.

Ví dụ
There are those who are eager (háo hức) to ring the death knell for S&OP, eager to embrace the hype of the latest technology or methodology just to have something “relevant” to talk to. To those I would say “S&OP is dead, long live S&OP.”

Employees who manage the data of clients, fellow employees or partner organizations will need to be aware of and trained on their obligation (nghĩa vụ) to protect data zealously (hăng hái). A small error on the part of the employee can ring the death knell of an organization, especially in an era when companies have faced huge fines and government attention over data breaches.

Washington has been mobilizing its total national resources (nguồn lực quốc gia) to whack the kneecap of Huawei, a world-leading firm of the 5G technology. Such brazen (vô liêm sỉ) political persecution (đàn áp) of an outstanding technology company may inadvertently force China to accelerate (tăng tốc) its drive for self-sufficiency in semi-conductors (chất bán dẫn), which may, in its turn, ring the knell of the American semi-conductor industry.

"Straighten up and fly right" nghĩa là gì?

"Straighten up and fly right" = thẳng lên và bay ngay -> nghĩa là cải thiện lại bản thân, điểu chỉnh hành vi và thái độ để trở nên tốt hơn hoặc để trưởng thành.

Ví dụ
I wonder what our local leaders in government are currently doing to remove officers who don’t deserve to continue serving — the “Derek Chauvins waiting to happen,” who have never truly been held accountable, who still think that they are above the law. “Well, we woulda/coulda/shoulda done something but we wanted to give him one more chance to straighten up and fly right.”

“As you read and reflect, I hope you will be inspired to share God’s insight and guidance! We know we are afflicted with an incurable destructive malady (tệ nạn, chứng bệnh)! God’s intercession (sự can thiệp giúp, nói giùm) and a spiritual experience are our salvation (sự cứu rỗi linh hồn)! I believe this through and through! My fervent (tha thiết, sôi sục) hope is that once you embrace his mercy, forgiveness, and grace, you will straighten up and fly right also! These are sober thoughts, for you to mull over, from your alcoholic brother, sober Bob!”

When I was young, my mother often said I was cantankerous (khó tính, hay gắt gỏng). She also said that “I had better straighten up and fly right or she would give me medicine I won’t soon forget.” (The discipline of wayward (ương ngạnh, bướng bỉnh) children breeds mixed metaphors (phép ẩn dụ).) I understood cantankerousness in terms of what I had done or left undone. Later on, I understood my cantankerous ways in terms of ill-tempered civil disobedience and willful unacceptance of the status quo, especially when the status quo does not even merit the judgement of “pretty good” most of the time. In all of this, I leaned that I had better be a bit better than pretty good myself, if I was going to be an ill-tempered critic of the pretty bad folks. (I’m probably losing my readers here and I don’t blame them at all.)

"Fly in the teeth of" nghĩa là gì?

"Fly in the teeth of (something)" -> nghĩa là rõ ràng muốn chống đối/gây xung đột với cái khác.

Ví dụ
As for Eve’s luck, there is no doubt that she will survive because the show will be nothing without Oh and Comer. However, he will surely have a lot to solve, causing the scenes of Villain’s violent fly in the teeth of the fact that Caroline can hide a deep connection. Villanelle can also have a complicated reaction when leaving the woman he loves for dead.

It said qualification for next season’s European Champions Cup could be judged on current standings. However, there could fly in the teeth of the Irish province retaining the championship without having to go through end of season play-offs. Scottish Rugby Union’s new performance director Jim Mallinder said: “From a SRU point of view we wouldn’t agree with that.”

Within Fianna Fáil, which like the Greens must put any deal to its members but only requires a simple majority, there will fly in the teeth of a deal at all levels of the party. In the parliamentary party, Éamon Ó Cuív is expected to oppose coalition (sự hợp tác, liên minh) with Fine Gael and favour opening discussions with Sinn Féin, while a number of councillors have also expressed their opposition, with some favouring a national government.

"Be a ring-tailed snorter" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Kari Shea on Unsplash

"Be a ring-tailed snorter" = có đuôi chuông khịt mũi -> nghĩa đen (cách dùng cũ) là con lợn (đuôi xoăn, và có tiếng khịt mũi đặc trưng). Nghĩa bóng chỉ người hoặc cái gì sặc sẽ, lòe loẹt, lập dị hoặc nhiệt tình, tràn đầy năng lượng.

Ví dụ
We all think Captain Clark is going to be a ring-tailed snorter for fighting.

Handsome women, too, by the churchful, by the street- i ful ; but never in my life did I ever lay eyes on such a glorious, superb, magnificent, divine (thần thánh), out- and-out ring-tailed snorter, if I may be allowed to use the expression.

Was Bette a bitch? Yes and no. On the one hand she had a warm heart and a trusting nature. On the other she could be a cold careerist. If she didn’t feel threatened, she could be delightful. If she did, she could be a ring-tailed snorter.

The Magnificent Seven (United Artists) suggests that, after many a disappointment with Hollywood and television westerns, U.S. reviewers and distributors are so saddle-sore (đau và tê cứng) and range-blind that they cannot tell a ring-tailed snorter from a bucket-foot mule.

"Maybees don't fly in June" nghĩa là gì?

"Maybees don't fly in June" có maybees là cách chơi chữ giữa "maybe" và "bee" được dùng rất phổ biến vào những tháng hè -> cụm từ này nghĩa là chẳng làm được tích sự gì nếu cứ suy nghĩ/lưỡng lự hoài mà vẫn chưa ra quyết định cuối cùng.

Ví dụ
It takes him an hour to choose the best shirt. Maybees don't fly in June!

You shouldn't be so indecisive, just make the final decision please! You know, maybees don't fly in June!

"There is fly-tipping all over this area, so please, let's have some action. Maybees don't fly in June, we need action and we need it quick."

"Fly off at a tangent" nghĩa là gì?

"Fly/go off at a tangent" có tangent là đường tiếp tuyến (đường thẳng chạm vào bên ngoài một đường cong mà không đi xuyên qua) -> nghĩa là đi chệch ra ngoài vấn đề đang bàn; đi chệch ra khỏi nếp nghĩ (cách cư xử) hằng ngày.

Ví dụ
The segments crafted by Anurag Kashyap and Dibakar Banerjee, which constitute the two middle episodes of Ghost Stories, fly off at a tangent, each in its own way, and turn into horror yarns that go well beyond the strict parameters (thông số) of the genre.

Diplomatically (bằng con đường ngoại giao, bằng biện pháp ngoại giao) enough, he has stopped short of spelling out the “substantive improvements” that he wants WHO to effect. But he has resolved to go off at a tangent in his dealings with a global entity. At this catastrophic juncture (điểm nối thảm khốc), the comity (sự lễ độ) of nations deserved better than a trilateral conflict (sự xung đột ba bên) of bruised egos between the People’s Republic of China, the United States and WHO.

One way or another, Trump junior would be an enormous pain in the backside, and his termly reports would be full of reproving remarks about his boastfulness (tính hay khoe khoang, khoác loác), mendacity (sự nói láo, xuyên tạc), self-righteousness (tự cho là đúng đắn) and generally questionable character. And yet a fair-minded teacher would have to concede (thừa nhận) that, for all his defects, the wayward pupil is sometimes able to extract a nugget (quặng vàng) of truth which evades the notice of more conventional minds, even if he is then inclined to fly off at a tangent.

"Give the bird" -> nghĩa là giơ ngón tay thối để thể hiện thái độ ghét bỏ hoặc vô lễ với ai.

Ví dụ
Sometimes they give you the bird,” he said, “but then I just give them the peace sign.” — Ellie Rushing.

“I have only had one guy give me the bird,” Murphy said. “I stopped and talked to a couple of guys in Southbury with Rush Limbaugh playing on the radio. I’m pretty sure they’re not fans of mine.”

“My first reaction was not to celebrate with my teammates but it was to run straight over to Brodie Holland, jump in his face, give him the bird, give him a mouthful and then run off like nothing happened to join in with my teammates for the celebration,” Cornes told AFL Media.

cơn sốt dùng đòn bẩy đầu tư tại Trung Quốc bùng lên, nguy cơ bong bóng chứng khoán lại nổ tung

Total margin finance in China reached Rmb1.27tn ($184bn) on Tuesday after more than a week of consecutive daily increases (tăng năm ngày liên tiếp), according to Wind, a data service. Separate figures show investors rushing to open new accounts that give them access to loans from brokers.

The CSI 300 index, a gauge of the country’s biggest stocks listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen, leapt almost 6 per cent on Monday and continued to climb on the following days, after state media extolled the benefits of a “healthy” bull market at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has hit economic activity.

But the rally has drawn comparisons with the events of 2015, when state media urged individual investors to pile in to stocks as the economic backdrop weakened. Sustained in part by a crescendo of margin lending, prices doubled over the course of a year before losing more than 40 per cent of their value in a matter of months.

"Rolling in dough" = lăn trong bọt nhão -> nghĩa là có nhiều tiền, rất giàu có.

Ví dụ
It’s no secret Kanye West is rolling in dough — but exactly how much? The rapper’s net worth is a staggering (kinh ngạc) $1.3 billion, according to Forbes.

Instead of rolling in dough, this town is sinking (chìm) in debt (nợ nần) from a new Water & Sewer Utility it got forced to throw together in eight months.

Albert Langford was a textile (dệt) company sales manager who made a darn good living. But his wife was rolling in dough — and made sure everyone knew it.

"Paint the lily" nghĩa là gì?

"Paint the lily" = sơn hoa huệ -> nghĩa là làm đẹp thêm cho cái gì đã đẹp/hoàn hảo sẵn rồi.

Ví dụ
You would never get away with it nowadays, and he only just about got away with it then. But he wasn’t really a nuts-and-bolts reporter; he was a humorous (hài hước) writer, and all humorous writers paint the lily from time to time.

Stroll, genteel and gay, through parkland (đất trồng cây ở công viên), garden, street, square and terrace (nền đất) of the city’s south-eastern residential Eden. Gertrude really does ‘paint the lily’; she’s always got a new angle on something.

Just recall the wisdom of the Bard: “To paint the lily, To throw a perfume on the violet . . . is wasteful and ridiculous excess.” In other words, don’t overdo (làm quá tay) it. An excess (lượng lớn) of flowers makes for a lousy drink.

"On the wane" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Morning Brew on Unsplash

"On the wane" có từ wane là tàn tạ, suy yếu -> cụm từ này nghĩa là giảm sút, trở nên suy yếu/suy tàn, trong thời kì suy thoái.

Ví dụ
Coronavirus solidarity (tình đoàn kết) in Germany is on the wane but not gone. A few months ago, most people in Germany agreed with the countrywide coronavirus restrictions imposed on daily life. Are they now losing their community spirit? Not necessarily, say experts.

Recently, however, that denialism (phản đối) appears to be on the wane as the disease rapidly spreads throughout the country. Increasingly, Azerbaijanis are taking the disease seriously as they see friends, family members, and co-workers come down with the virus.

COVID-19 pandemic in Russia on the wane, but people must exercise caution — minister. The country's top health official promised that as soon as clinical (y tế) testing of a vaccine against COVID-19 is complete, the Russian Health Ministry would report the results.

"Bird has flown" nghĩa là gì?

"Bird has flown" = chú chim đã bay đi -> nghĩa là ai đó/cái gì đã bỏ đi, trốn thoát và không còn ở đây nữa.

Ví dụ
That bird has flown. They should use all this money to pump “Just Mercy,” their Oscar movie with Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan.

“Not so long ago it made absolute football and financial sense for the Kangaroos to move to Queensland as a relocation (dịch chuyển, xây dựng lại), just like the successful move of the Swans, but that bird has flown.

In countries like India, it may be challenged by the likes of Walmart and Reliance Jio but in other parts of the world, that bird has flown. And unlike China, which is flexing its muscles to portray strength at a time of international weakness after the spread of COVID-19, Amazon has used the pandemic to acquire strength (and cash). Jeff Bezos actually became richer during the pandemic.

A No-Holds-Barred Live Conversation with the Novelist Garth Greenwell. The hot-shit gay novelist (tiểu thuyết gia) talks about sex, writing, shame, Pride, James Baldwin's rage, and whatever the hell is up with Lindsey Graham.

"Bird of own brain" nghĩa là gì?

"Bird of (one's) own brain" = chú chim trong não -> nghĩa là suy nghĩ, ý tưởng trong nhận thức của mỗi người và đặc biệt nó bí ẩn và không ai biết.

Ví dụ
Has researching your book or watching these shows informed a bird of your own brain about what you believe happens to us after we die?

Indeed there are many stories brimming with spiritual wisdom (sự khôn ngoan trong thuộc linh) throughout Mariani’s beautifully crafted poems. Many focus on his life and family—a bird of his own brain; receiving his first holy Communion; working at a gas station; hijinks with his brother; college; marrying his lifelong bride Eileen; having a “bunch of grandkids, two elevens, a fourteen, a fifteen, a seventeen.” Family is a testimony of faith for Mariani. One grandson is a “pint-sized guardian angel,” and another “cheers” his grandfather’s soul, while two granddaughters enrich Mariani’s faith.

Today’s celebration is about how Mary was prepared for that moment. In a bird of her own brain, her existence was blessed by the holiness of her future son. With her consent (sự đồng ý, ưng thuận), his conception sent the grace that filled her to the very origins of the human race to heal the gap that had afflicted every other conception since then with the fault of sin and the fact of death. Her child’s Incarnation joined and transformed the flesh of every human being -- past, present and future -- opening us to a new and glorious future: life with God forever.

"Hold the ring between" nghĩa là gì?

Cần lắm một người đứng ra hòa giải. Photo by Ketut Subiyanto from Pexels

"Hold the ring (between)" nghĩa là theo dõi, kiểm soát, giải quyết xung đột hoặc tranh chấp một cách trung lập, khách quan. Chủ yếu dùng ở Anh.

Ví dụ
Clerk attempted to hold the ring between the warring antiquaries (nhà khảo cổ), mediating (hòa giải trung gian) and assisting both parties.

Eisenhower had the difficult task of holding the ring between them and imposing his own view. His greatness – doubted by some, like Brooke and Montgomery – stems partly from his success in achieving that.

In strictly limited circumstances, as in the France of Emperor Napoleon III (1848-71), a balance of social forces (lực lượng xã hội) could allow the state to develop something of a life of its own and hold the ring between conflicting classes.

They might agree on outcomes, but their conceptual philosophies (triết lý khái niệm) were quite different: judges from Southern Europe believed that their task was to distinguish between justice and injustice, between right and wrong, while judges from Northern Europe saw their function as being to hold the ring between competing claims of right.

My ears were always ringing when I got on the train after work but sometimes, I felt a strange sensation of silence inside me.

The crowd listens intently but feels more than hears the beats. When the fireworks stop and the smoke is thick and our ears are still ringing, the crowd wildly applauds its approval of the performance and turns to the stone balcony that overlooks the square.

“My life was flipped upside down and everything I had worked towards was sidelined,” she said, “I couldn’t even stand up without my vision blacking out and my ears ringing…My parents would put me in a wheelchair and take me in for a blood transfusion (truyền máu) on those days.”

By now, you're well aware that being a tour pro is tough, and that making it through a Monday qualifier (vòng loại) is more difficult than making it through a Metallica concert without your ears ringing. That being said, this story involving Steve Allan is too good not to share. Well, too good unless you're Steve Allan.

Rachael Hearson, 59, has been an NHS nurse, midwife and health visitor for more than 40 years.

In her new book, Handle With Care: Confessions (lời thú nhận, thú tội) of an NHS Health Visitor, she shares heart-warming, bizarre (kỳ cục, kỳ quặc) and hilarious (hài hước, buồn cười) tales (câu chuyện) from her time visiting families and teaching health care.

Speaking to the Mirror about the new book and couple in question she said: 'They had been married for some years but children "hadn't come along". The GP deduced they didn't know how to make babies, and it was my job to ensure they did!'

'They genuinely (ngây thơ, chân thật) thought babies arrived as a result of simply "being married" and had no clue (không hiểu, không có manh mối gì). Teaching someone about sex is quite a responsibility. But within a couple of visits, the pair couldn't keep their hands off each other.'
