"Have the wood on" nghĩa là gì?

"Have the wood on (someone or something)" -> nghĩa là có lợi thế trước ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
A furious Craig Bellamy admitted the Canberra Raiders ‘have the wood’ on his Melbourne Storm and accused his players selfishness (sự ích kỷ) following Saturday’s 22-6 home loss.

China is armed to the teeth and happy for everyone to know it. At this stage, the Americans have the wood on them in space but the Chinese will work furiously to develop their own space technology — or steal America’s. The Chinese have gained a huge amount of Western technology by theft, and they seem proud of it. They have no scruples (số lượng rất ít, đắn đo, cân nhắc).

We’re gambling on whether one of David Harrison’s stable stars handles the conditions because all things equal Jericho Missile should have the wood on these. Take out his two failures in the Karrakatta Plate and Kingston Town Classic and the form looks dominant against winter animals, while his three-year-old status means he gets in beautifully at the weights. Jericho Missile trialled well on a soft track late last month and usually it’s a fair call to assume runners will handle it wet until shown otherwise. The booking of regular rider Paul Harvey says a forward showing is expected and they draw for options in the middle of the line. Now just win! BET: WIN

"Babe in the woods" = em bé trong rừng (đứa bé lạc trong rừng vắng) -> nghĩa là người ngây thơ, vô tội và không có kinh nghiệm gì.

Ví dụ
“She play the babe in the woods like she got blinders on to the world. ‘Oh, I just don’t think they don’t like anybody.’ Naw, they are racist (phân biệt chủng tộc), because the cops (cảnh sát) say they are racist.”
Aubrey Watson is hardly a babe in the woods. Sure, the Missouri Bombers catcher just turned 13 years old last month. But Watson has been playing softball against older players since she first took up the sport.
"I prefer offense," Schlenbaker noted. "I started playing flag football when I was six and in third grade, that's when I started playing tackle football and I've always played running back. It's my favorite position." As a recruit, Schlenbaker, who goes by "Ben" with those who know him, is basically a babe in the woods, but his story is one they will make a movie about someday.

"Fields have eyes, and woods have ears" = đất có mắt, rừng có tai -> nghĩa là mặc dù có vẻ yên ắng/trống vắng nhưng vẫn có thể có ai đó nghe trộm được (tai vách mạch rừng).

Ví dụ
Watch out! Fields have eyes, and woods have ears.

Even though no one is here, fields have eyes, and woods have ears. Just consider what you are gonna say to me.

Here is empty and quiet. Do you think we should discuss about the upcoming plans? Absolutely NO. You know, fields have eyes, and woods have ears.

"With might and main" -> nghĩa là dùng hết sức lực có thể.

Ví dụ
I want champagne and one that bubbles up with might and main – Goethe. Much like his champagne, as soon as Monsieur Moët enters the room boredom (buồn tẻ) disappears - A contemporary (đồng nghiệp) of Jean-Remy Moët.

“We will work with might and main to solve (giải quyết) the problems of those citizens who have lost their jobs and incomes (thu nhập) immediately,” he said.

"As wild cards brought by the novel coronavirus loom (hiện ra lù lù) over production and work, we must maintain stable and healthy economic development with might and main to build an all-round well-off society," he elaborated.

"Splice the mainbrace" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Michael Discenza on Unsplash

"Splice the mainbrace" = nôi dây leo chính -> nghĩa là mời rượu cho thủy thủ đoàn, nhất là rượu mạnh, rượu rum.

Ví dụ
The Royal Navy personnel gathered (tụ họp) at Portsmouth Naval Base, Hampshire, to "splice the mainbrace" - a celebration involving drinking a tot (một chút) of rum.

After all that effort, Wilkes did something else nice for the crew. “ … all hands were called to ‘splice the mainbrace,’ ” writes Erskine, using a sailing term derived about one of the most difficult chores (việc vặt) in a sailing, repairing rigging, a hard bit of work deserving a drink afterward.

It all means that there are a host of things to do, whether you’re into music, drama, history, fashion, food or....pirates. Avast (dừng lại) and aback (lùi lại) me hearties. So splice the mainbrace (if you’re old enough that is), because here’s the pick of what’s going on in Liverpool and beyond from Friday, September 9 to Sunday, September 11.

"Drained of color" nghĩa là gì?

"Drained of color" có từ drain là kiệt quệ -> cụm từ nay nghĩa là tái mét, nhợt nhạt, xanh xám.

Ví dụ
Martha’s cheeks (má) all but drained of color and her lips were bloodless. “You never go into those woods, you hear? There’s evil in them.”

Charge: Bloomington man's face 'drained of color' when confronted (đương đầu) about wife's stabbing death. The two had been shouting at each just before the attack, according to the criminal complaint.

Meanwhile, outside the compound, the familiar Bay Area environs (vùng lân cận) seem drained of color, with lifeless grays, off-whites, and beiges (màu be), like a laboratory cityscape, an urban maze for test-subject mice.

"Don't halloo before you are out of the woods" nghĩa là gì?

"Don't halloo before you are out of the woods" = đừng vội hú khi chưa ra khỏi rừng -> nghĩa là chưa ra khỏi vòng nguy hiểm chớ vội reo mừng.

Ví dụ
The economy will get there. But let’s make sure that don't halloo before you are out of the woods!

There are a few limitations, however. You can’t save your game in the middle of a fight, so don't halloo before you are out of the woods!

“The biggest issues is really building up self-awareness. Don't halloo before you are out of the woods. Bybee cautions. “Clearly what their strengths are, being able to articulate that. Figuring out how that strength has been used in a particular way. How can it now be applied in a different way.”

“The woods are full of" nghĩa là gì?

“The woods are full of (someone or something)” -> nghĩa là có rất nhiều người/cái gì (như rừng đầy chim).

Ví dụ
The once bustling coal mines are smoldering (cháy âm ỉ), the woods are full of skinless men and antlered women, and that's not even the most horrifying part.

In 2003 longtime Atlanta Braves radio and TV play-by-play man Skip Caray was punished by team flagship Superstation TBS for — get this — excessive bias in favor of the home team. Now the woods are full of homers. Some are ridiculously prejudiced, like the late University of Georgia legend Larry Munson. Some cheer, cheer for the home team, if they don’t win it’s a shame but still are careful not to be overbearing about it. Then I started guiding.

Everything is different when you absolutely have to find a bird. I came to dread July, a month of doldrums (lặng gió, buồn nản). In spring, it’s easy. Birds are singing. They’re establishing territories (lãnh thổ) and seeking mates. They’re argumentative. By July, they’re mostly quiet. If they have kids, they avoid attention. If they don’t have kids, they just don’t care. The woods are full of birds whose only purpose in life is to ignore you.

"Leave in his hands" nghĩa là gì?

"Leave in (one’s) hands" = để trong tay ai -> nghĩa là để ai nắm quyền, kiểm soát hoặc điều khiển ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
There inlies the problem: the people we have drafting critical cybersecurity policies (chính sách về an ninh mạng) don’t actually understand the basics of software and computer code. It’s not their fault — but it’s also far too important to leave in their hands alone.

One such world is now inhabited by humans and possesses historical records and artifacts of great power far too valuable to leave in their hands. This once proud race now fights for its very survival, and must protect the secrets and power of their ancestors from both the Imperium of Man and the evil, bio-engineered Tyranids, bent on the destruction of this fertile paradise.

Mr Clements continues to stress that he was not across the intricacies (tính phức tạp) of the party’s fundraising techniques during the 2015 election. “That was something that was safe for me to leave in her hands,” he says. “In retrospect (hồi tưởng lại, nhìn lại vấn đề), I should have checked this stuff. I took over an organisation that had been run in a certain way for a long period of time,” Mr Clements says. He accepts that his head would have been “on the chopping block” as asked by counsel assisting Scott Robertson, if fundraising fell short and the party performed badly in the election, but qualifies that his head was always on the chopping block.

“Leave in a body” nghĩa là gì?

“Leave in a body” có body là nhóm, đoàn, hội đồng -> cụm từ này nghĩa là rời khỏi nơi nào theo một nhóm/đoàn.

Ví dụ "We all want to get moving," he said. But he was waiting for the main group to leave Saturday, noting "it is better to leave in a body , because leaving in small bunches is dangerous."

“Police are in the area 24/7. We can leave the house and I’ve been on a few runs, but you can’t leave in a body or you risk getting a €200 fine on the spot.“People in self-isolation (tự cô lập) are taking it seriously here and it’s like a ghost town. In Lombardy and Veneto it is even stricter with military presence.

“Technology is what brings people and connects people to us,” said Khristine Rogers, Senior Planet Colorado’s state director. “But we’re really trying to create a hub of social connection (trung tâm kết nối xã hội), where people feel at home. And one of my favorite things day in and day out is you see people, especially a couple of weeks ago, who maybe came in by themselves to sign up for a class, and then they leave in a group, or they leave in a body and go have lunch at the beer garden.”

"Leave to chance" nghĩa là gì?

"Leave (something) to chance" -> nghĩa là để mọi việc được sắp đặt ngẫu nhiên; mặc kệ kết quả/tác động từ bên ngoài ra sao.

Ví dụ Conceding that electricity supply is “a necessity, not a luxury”, Dr Moxey urged businesses and households struggling amid the economic crisis caused by COVID-19 to “not leave to chance” whether they will be disconnected but instead contact the utility to arrange a payment plan.

Of course historical markers had been erected in Nebraska well before 1961, but they resulted from local initiatives. The granite Oregon Trail markers were installed in 1912-1914 by a collaboration of the Nebraska State Historical Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1957 the state legislature decided that marking Nebraska’s historic sites was too important to leave to chance, and that year they passed a bill giving that responsibility to a historic sites council of three state officials.

He says heatstroke (sốc nhiệt) is not something you should leave to chance. Typically, one of the best ways to prevent it is by drinking lots of water, but also fueling the body with substances. “So if you are not adequately fueled, your body is not able to sort of, what we call thermal regulate itself or its temperature, so it starts to try and break down fats and things like that to generate energy and by doing that, it also generates more heat,” Dr. Shaw said.

"Promises are like pie crust, made to be broken" nghĩa là gì?

Lời hứa sinh ra không phải để phá vỡ. Photo by Levi Alvarez on Unsplash

"Promises are like pie crust, made to be broken" hoặc "promises are like pie crust(s): (easily made,) easily broken" nghĩa là lời hứa giống như vỏ bánh nướng, sinh ra để phá vỡ/ lời hứa vốn sinh ra là để không được thực hiện.

Ví dụ
Are these promises like piecrusts, made to be broken ? If not, this is a pretty fair start for miscegenation (hôn nhân dị chủng).

Michael promised; but with him, promises were like pie crust—made to be broken. At the age of sixteen he joined the association of United Irishmen, but kept what he had done a secret from his family.

I was biding my time to give them notice as soon as my money was in my hot little hand, because I knew well how little a promise meant to this collection of crooks (kẻ lừa đảo). They thought that promises were like pie-crust, made to be broken.

The forty acres of land and two mules, which were promised by the Federal Government, never materialized (thành hiện thực). That promise was like the proverbial pie-crust, made to be broken; and the descendants (hậu duệ) of these four and a half millions are to-day entitled, by every humane consideration, to all the benefits and the equities in the case.

"Is that a threat or a promise" nghĩa là gì?

Cần lắm những cơn mưa. Photo by Joe Leineweber from Pexels

"(Is that) a threat or a promise" = đang đe dọa hay hứa hẹn vậy -> nghĩa là bạn đang đưa ra tin tốt hay tin xấu. Cụm từ được cho là xuất phát từ Thế chiến I từ những người lính.

Ví dụ
Bargaining (đàm phán) is the process of reaching agreement through credible threats and promises.

In addition, the supervisor (giám sát viên) could augment (tăng) or reduce the worker's fee by 40%, by sending (and enforcing) a promise or threat message at the beginning of each trial (phiên tòa).

We could equally talk sensibly of the promise of rain, though hardly of the promise of famine (khô hạn). Whether black clouds are a threat or a promise depends on whether rain is a blessing or a disaster.

Unless there exists with the commander (chỉ huy) some ability and capacity to continue with further application of the threat or the promise of reward, the effect of either threat or promise should evaporate (tan biến) with that instant.

"Break a promise" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng hứa bậy khiến người khác tổn thương. Photo by freestocks.org from Pexels

"Break a/one's promise" nghĩa là bội ước, không giữ lời hứa.

Ví dụ
But perhaps, even though the promises hasn't been broken, when someone intends to break a promise she has done the moral equivalent of breaking a promise.

If a man does not carry out his promise, he is cashiered (tước quân hàm); men do not care to associate with one who breaks his promise; and what would become of God's great name if he were to break his promise?

If one breaks a promise, the default position is that one has failed to live up to an obligation (nghĩa vụ), and so breaking a promise is a moral failure. It is not simply a failure to live up to an announced prediction of what one will do.

I told her, “Any time.” I spoke to Tina the next day. Tina's husband, Jim, came through immediately. He spoke about his love for Tina and his sons. Jim said he wanted his oldest son, Danny, to break his promise to him which was that he was to take on the responsibility of the family. Jim said that he wanted Danny to live his life.

"Keep your promise" nghĩa là gì?

"Keep a/one's promise" nghĩa là giữ lời hứa.

Ví dụ
Kelsey, I know you think I married you to keep my promise to Ian. It's not why.

In fact, if John clung to his promise in the face of the certain death of many orphans (trẻ mồ côi) (or even one), he would have a morally perverse commitment to keeping his promises.

But suppose her father doesn't allow her to keep her promises when he hears about them. Then she doesn't have to do what she promised or agreed to do. The LORD will set her free.

“Eileen, I have to go. I've thought of it from every possible angle. This way, we'll get over the hurt faster. If I stayed, we'd both be dying by inches knowing that eventually I had to keep my promise to Kevin. Don't you understand?” Eileen sighed.

"Go back on his promise" nghĩa là gì?

Hứa lên hứa xuống bảo đến mà chưa thấy đâu! Photo by Felipe Balduino from Pexels

"Go back on (one's) promise" nghĩa là nuốt lời, thất hứa.

Ví dụ
For a moment he was tempted to go back on his promise.

If you call spreading rumors about how I went back on my promise to date her when I returned moving on. I guess it's better than her speading that we actually were steady.

Promissory estoppel (bằng chứng liên quan đến lời hứa) is an equitable doctrine (học thuyết) designed to prevent the promisor going back on their promise where this would be inequitable (unfair) because the promisee has relied on it.

She placed a hand on her shoulder. “Take it easy, baby. You can't go chickening out (bỏ dở) on me now. Remember, you promised me you would go out with me tonight.”
“I know. I'm not going back on my promise,” she answered, shaking her head.

"A promise made is a promise kept" nghĩa là gì?

Nhất ngôn cửu đỉnh. Photo by Valentin Antonucci on Unsplash

"A promise made is a promise kept" nghĩa là nói lời phải giữ lấy lời, đã hứa thì phải thực hiện.

Ví dụ
I want you all to know I have no intention of giving this baby up. With me, a promise made is a promise kept.

Be it pride, fear, or lack of prayer followed by waiting, we have all made promises that don't look so good in hindsight (nhận thức muộn màng). However, a promise made should be a promise kept.

I'm not talking about simply a visualization (trực quan) exercise or a vague optimism (lạc quan mơ hồ). I'm talking about the fact that , insofar as it depends on God, a promise made is a promise kept. Can you walk as confidently in the land of "promise made" as you would in the land of "promise kept"?

A life lesson followed. By referencing some life experiences, the man talked about integrity (chính trực) and how a promise made is a promise kept. He also shared some examples demonstrating that once people set a goal and develop a plan, it's their personal responsibility to make it happen. No one can reach your goals for you.

"As cold as charity" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Vlad Chețan from Pexels

"As cold as charity" nghĩa là rất lạnh hoặc nghĩa bóng là lạnh lùng, xa cách.

Ví dụ
Froyna at that time had no heating stove and she was as cold as charity below. It was like sleeping in a snowball.

From the tone of Governour's voice when speaking of generosity from their blood relation, it was a slim sort of beneficence, and most like as cold as charity.

'My mother's cousin died, too. I've inherited (thừa hưởng) a pile of stones, as cold as charity, but it comes with a sizeable fortune so I must not grumble (cằn nhằn). I assume your mourning (tang tóc) has delayed your wedding?

The weather, unusually severe for the season (31st of October) had driven the inhabitants from their usual paseo (đi dạo) to take shelter underneath this colonade, where I found all the men muffled (quấn áo/khăn) to the chin in huge capas, and the ladies peeping from their mantillas (khăn choàng) as cold as charity.

"Leave someone stew in his own juice" nghĩa là gì?

"Leave/let (someone) stew in (one's) own juice" có stew là sự hoảng hốt, bối rối -> cụm từ này nghĩa là để mặc kệ xác ai.

Ví dụ
That doesn’t mean we can let Kristen off the hook, though. The next day, Jax and Brittany arrive at her bungalow so that Jax can mow her lawn (he claims to be a yardwork aficionado (người cuồng nhiệt)) while Brittany will sit inside and let her stew in her own miserable juices for the camera. Kristen says she spent most of the last night in emotional distress because she wasn’t invited to the party. It got so bad that she sent the dogs away with her ex-boyfriend Carter. (That is not a punctuation error (lỗi chấm câu).)

A client came in with a nastygram from her ex-husband regarding money she was owed. Since owing the money isn't disputed, the ex was either trying to provoke our client or he was simply wanting to punish her. But interestingly, our client didn't react to it. She recognized this as his issue and left him to stew in his own juices. People who are either getting divorced or are recently divorced are often on two different playing fields. One may be trying to figure out what is fair or how they can make their new life work, while the other is trying to win the balance-sheet battle. They spend a tremendous amount of energy, time and money to often end up worse off than either of them should have been. What if they had both just simply settled down?

When Yar’Adua finished speaking, I interjected (xen vào, tống vào) a few words in amplification (sự mở rộng, khuếch đại). He looked at us steadily for some moments, and then said, “I have no intention of taking up arms for Nigeria again. Gowon is too far gone, and I would as soon let him stew in his own juice. If you boys want to stage a coup, which I agree is long overdue, I will not stop you. However, I reject your offer to be Head of State. Indeed, I refuse to have anything to do with it. But since I believe your motives are correct, the only undertaking I will give you is, should you fail, and anyone wants to execute you, I would do my utmost to save your necks.”

"Make like a tree and leave" nghĩa là gì?

"Make like a tree and leave" = làm như một khúc gỗ và rời đi (cách chơi chữ của leaf) -> cách nói hài hước khi rời đi ngay lập tức và vội vã.

Ví dụ
When your round is over, make like a tree and leave. Don’t use the putting green, don’t hang around at the clubhouse door for a chat, don’t go for a browse of the pro shop. Hop in the car and hit the road.

“What’s that they say? ’Make like a tree and leave? That’s what the GreenMarket is doing,” explains Community Events Manager Mary Pinak. The Mayor’s Office of Sustainability is offering up to two Florida native or Florida-friendly trees to each city address, as part of its initiative to plant 10,000 trees in ten years. Between that goal, and “the fact that Earth Day is April 22, this seemed to be a good opportunity to take a piece of the GreenMarket home.”

DPW wanted to replace the old trees with new, less troublesome specimens (mẫu vật, hạng người/loại người), although the proposal does not call for replacing every tree the city wants removed. Unsurprisingly, many business owners, residents, and frequent visitors to the neighborhood demanded that the city make like a tree and leave with those plans, calling for the preservation of the decades-old plantings.
