"All things to all men" nghĩa là gì?

"All things to all men" = mọi thứ cho mọi người -> nghĩa là làm hài lòng tất cả mọi người.

Ví dụ
Besides his numerous cures, there were many other wonders on St. Francis’ life: gifts of tongues, predictions (tiên đoán), bilocation, calming a storm at sea, and more. Francis had been “all things to all men”; he was known and loved and even sometimes hated by great and small in all walks of life.

Following this week’s incoherent (rời rạc) and reactionary (phản động) spending review, complete with a freeze on public sector pay and a massive boost in military spending, the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, is so conflicted that he cannot even bring himself to admit that he is imposing a new round of austerity on a country that has already been groaning under that cosh (dùi cui) for the past decade; and the party’s current leader Boris Johnson is so adept at being all things to all men (and women) that his shape-shifting qualities have become an international byword.

He’s trying to be all things to all men; he’s brilliant at politics. He’s not to be trusted but he can present (trình diện) a trusted face. He likes risk-taking. Has a sense of humor about what he does. He enjoys life to the full, has a lust for life, and he also has confidence.

Is it time to reconsider the broadcaster's purpose, its place in Irish life? It seems as if it may be as if it continues to try to be all things to all men, a kind of green BBC, it will continue to fade (phai nhạt).

"Grease the palm" nghĩa là gì?

"Grease the palm" = bôi trơn bàn tay -> nghĩa là đút lót, mua chuộc ai.

Ví dụ
Sources also alleged (khẳng định) that families are also forced (bị ép) to grease the palm of “some” health workers for loading and unloading bodies of their loved ones from a mortuary van (xe tang).

You can never catch the bars of the ticket counter unless you grease the palm of the man on duty. Once upon a time I had a file of a poor relative (người thân) with a clerk (thư kí) in a government office. Just to create a rapport (quan hệ), I tried to remind him that he had been my class fellow at college in early eighties. He rejected me and my statement as an old wives tale and demanded his share of bribe.

Those who have the support are able to access a “decent” lawyer, meet family members during supervised (giám sát) prison visits, rarely miss court dates due to the non-availability of police escorts, have funds to buy coupons for daily item, and “grease the palm of prison officials or convict warders” to access better facilities such as a mattress or better ventilated (thông thoáng) space, the essay said.

In hospitals you have to grease the palm of officials in order to gain an hospital bed for your patient. Otherwise, your ward (phòng) could be left unattended to, with death being the consequence.

"Glad you could drop by" nghĩa là gì?

"Glad you could drop by" -> nghĩa là rất vui vì bạn đã ghé thăm (thường nói với khách đến thăm).

Ví dụ
Suppose for a minute that this world renowned symbol of all things class was an electrician (thợ điện) from Queens who, instead of being greeted by diabolical (ma quỷ, hiểm ác) tones of "So glad you could drop by, Mr. Bond," was simply met by friendly shouts of "Hey, James!" What would this James Bond drive?

The post, titled "51 hours left to live," garnered almost 10,000 comments. When one user asked how he planned on spending his final hours, Lucidending replied, "I'm going to live. This is as close to travel and meeting new people as I can get now. I'm sorry if that sounds dumb, but this is my world tour." The first response to this: "Greetings from Victoria, Australia. Glad you could drop by."

"Do right by" nghĩa là gì?

"Do right/well by (someone)" -> nghĩa là đối xử/nói công bình, có lợi và tôn kính ai.

Ví dụ
Allister Greenbrier, owner of Verillas, told The National: "As a designer and entrepreneur of Scottish ancestry the support I've received from Scots around the world has been tremendous and I hope I've been able to do right by them with our actions. Love wins."

“You want to do right by the player. This is a damn good running back. He's one of the top four or five that I wouldn't want to play because of how he can beat you and how physical he is and how fast he is. I think they'll be looking to take care of him, too. At least I would be. He's not someone who I would just necessarily be willing to go, 'Hey, look, we can just find the next guy in the second or third round and just move on.'

Erik and Liz live in Chester Township. Liz is a professional ceramic artist, while Erik’s background is in technology. Though neither have prior retail experience, they think things will work out fine.“We immediately had a connection with our fellow small business owners as well as the community,” Erik says. “We both firmly believe that if we have the right products and do right by the community and artists that we will be able to build something special.”

"Consumed by desire" nghĩa là gì?

"Consumed by desire" -> nghĩa là héo mòn/tiều tụy vì ham muốn/tham vọng.

Ví dụ
It felt like the most glamorous (đặc biệt thu hút), grown-up thing in the world to be able to buy something from Westwood; I was absolutely consumed by desire and realised that, if I only ate rice until Christmas, I could afford it. I carried the bag for years and years – I always loved that it was wipe-clean, so that, when I left it on sticky club dance floors, I could just wash it back to its shiny self.

“Whenever there is no desire, one beholds the mystery,” Lao Tzu wrote. “Whenever there is desire, one beholds the manifestations (sự hiện hình, biểu lộ).“ Turandot is lacking all desire. Calaf is all-consumed by desire. Puccini searched long, hard and unsuccessfully for the musical sorcery to procure a union of opposites. He died in 1924, leaving only sketches for the final duet.

he’s caught up in a vicious (xấu xa, sa vào tội lỗi) cycle, consumed by desire as music becomes both the cause of and release from all of her woes. She may have kicked her drug habit and been deemed sufficiently rehabilitated by the judicial system, but she’s far from over her true addiction. Still, as the viewer, you’re always in her corner. It’s Buckley’s blazing charisma (uy tín) that keeps you rooting for Rose-Lynn to dig herself out of the hole, even as you see her continue to shovel downward.

"By the yard" nghĩa là gì?

"By the yard" = bằng cả cái sân/thước Anh -> nghĩa là với số lượng rất lớn.

Ví dụ
New “passages” are inhabited by the entrance, kitchen, dining room, and a small living room. As with the originally chaotic feeling carried by the yard in its original state, we wanted to deal with the relationship between old and new in a more ambiguous (mơ hồ) way.

My brother gave me a little slogan, also. Life is hard by the yard but a cinch by the inch. I can only live in this instant. So despite all of the setbacks I've had, I've never been downhearted (chán nản, thất vọng), never been discouraged, because as long as I have my mind, know who I am, what I want to try to do, nothing can defeat me.

The world as we know it may be in disarray (xáo trộn) because of the pandemic but the countryside continues its seasonal cycle unabated. Gregory Gladwin’s heritage breed Sussex cows can sense the winter on its way and frankly they are not that keen on the torrential autumn rains. Instead of disappearing into the further grazing fields they cluster by the yard gates mooing for attention. Barns have been lined with straw in preparation and within the next ten days our two herds will be brought into their respective sheds ready for a cozy winter of shared bodily warmth and of course carving the next generation.

"By the thousand" nghĩa là gì?

"By the thousand" -> nghĩa là lượng lớn lên đến hàng ngàn.

Ví dụ
May-bugs that once came by the thousand in spring dwindled almost to nothing. We didn't know it then, but it was all the result of acid rain.

In Gaza, where there have been no confirmed coronavirus cases outside quarantine centres, Hamas officials said a full lockdown was not yet needed. People flocked into markets and shops by the thousand, only a few wearing masks.

I recently started subscribing to The Spectator, figuring that at the age of 55 I could achieve greater calmness of spirit by sponsoring others to be angry on my behalf. Week after week I have thumbed through the pages looking for the article that argues for cycle lanes to be built by the thousand, and it has been conspicuously absent.

"Wait and see" nghĩa là gì?

"Wait and see" -> nghĩa là (chính sách) chờ đợi và quan sát, chờ xem.

Ví dụ
Experts (chuyên gia) on a panel will also discuss whether Singapore ought to start vaccinating (tiêm chủng) its citizens against the coronavirus as soon as possible, or whether it would be best to wait and see how other countries' vaccination efforts pan out, given the low spread (lây lan) here.

We will have to wait and see about relaxing indoor dining ban (lệnh cấm). St. Louis County Executive Sam Page says the county is seeing a slight decrease in hospital admissions due to COVID-19, but it is too early to tell if it is enough to relax the ban on indoor dining.

The full National  Security Council-including Nixon, Kissinger, Laird,  Rogers,  and  Helms-gathered (tập hợp) that  afternoon  in the  Cabinet Room to discuss what to do about the communist (cộng sản)  advances into Cambodia. Three  options  were on the table: watching and waiting, which is what Rogers and Laird preferred; attacking the communist  sanctuaries (mật khu) just inside Cambodia  using South  Vietnamese  troops (quân đội) supported by U.S. air strikes, which was Kissinger's preferred option; or sending in American troops as well.

"By the short hairs" nghĩa là gì?

"By the short hairs" -> nghĩa là hoàn toàn bị ai khống chế/điều khiển.

Ví dụ
The coronavirus pandemic still has the world by the short hairs, and the symptoms are telling. Many people have turned prematurely grey.

When it doesn't work, the President will say [Grace putting on a deep Texas accent], 'Well, George, I'm afraid you've got me by the short hairs.

But no sooner had made his full confession than Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos stood on the deck of one of her fleet of yachts, lifted the spyglass to her eye, and called out, “Land ho!” Once on terra firma, she grabbed Eisgruber by the short hairs. I didn’t know she had it in her.

"By the hour" nghĩa là gì?

Có cặp có đôi mới toại lòng nhau. Photo by Allef Vinicius

"By the hour" -> nghĩa là mỗi tiếng, từng giờ; nghĩa khác là (thù lao, lương...) theo giờ.

Ví dụ
Brick-and-mortar retailers will never be able to match the almost daily variations that their online peers can bring to discounts and special offers. The portals can even bring about changes by the hour depending on what their algorithms (thuật toán) are saying about what’s likely to get shoppers to buy.

"Innovation is getting us beyond the model of just getting an order, making it and selling it,” he added. “We’ve been working with Aston University on servitisation to see how we get beyond the image that we are merely a widget maker, but instead a provider of machining by the hour. So rather than selling products we’re now selling our intellectual property (sở hữu trí tuệ) (IP), skills and physical assets to make our customers’ products better.

It's been a rough, rough year for Tony Ferguson. No other way to say it. Kudos to him for being that first headliner back at UFC 249 in May. It's easy to forget how unreal that whole situation was. He suffers the heartbreak of losing that Khabib Nurmagomedov title fight (again!), and accepts a different opponent, a different location, a different fight date. Things were changing by the hour back in April and May, and it probably had an ill effect on that performance against Justin Gaethje.

"By the bye" nghĩa là gì?

Tiện thể ngắm hoàng hôn cho bớt sầu. Photo by Rico Zamudio

"By the bye/by" = by the way -> nghĩa là nhân tiện/nhân thể, tình cờ.

Ví dụ
“We felt collectively that this made sense -- to give (the top four teams per conference) them the bye, not put them at substantial risk, and give them some real competition,” Bettman said. “We want those teams to not be disadvantaged by the bye, but not have a tremendous amount at risk, because they did qualify with the best records in the regular season.”

That massacre (cuộc tàn sát), of course, was the reckoning that took place in Westworld last season, as the robots faced off against the humans (and won rather convincingly) in the park. Bernard was not responsible for it; if anything, he was trying to protect his fellow robots from harm. But that is by the by now, so Bernard presses a button, releases his inner Ford and murders his accusers before they can nab him.

Sure, former Raiders QB Rich Gannon is the one banging the loudest drum, but Gannon was an MVP in 2002 and Carr is completing passes at a league-best 73.1% clip and is on pace for a 4,614 passing yards with 35 touchdowns and three interceptions (sự chắn). Not bad for a guy who many saw as not only being challenged by Marcus Mariota by the bye, but being replaced by him then.

"By main force" nghĩa là gì?

"By main force" -> nghĩa là hoàn toàn bằng sức mạnh.

Ví dụ
He appears to be trying to get schools to reopen by main force. Today the White House blocked the CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield from testifying before Congress about school reopenings. “The science should not stand in the way of this,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters on Thursday.

The knife, in springing back, closed into its owner’s wrist. Heathcliff pulled it away by main force, slitting up the flesh as it passed on… His adversary (đối thủ) had fallen senseless with excessive pain and the flow of blood that gushed (phun/vọt ra from an artery (huyết mạch) or a large vein. The ruffian (tên côn đồ, lưu manh) kicked and trampled on him, and dashed his head repeatedly against the flags.“

The newspaper also states 18 construction workers were in a construction shack at the new high school, which at the time was located where the Mount Jackson Fire Department is today. According to the Staunton Newsleader, “the 18 of them grabbed the beams (xà, đòn, cán) and held it down by main force” when the tornado (bão táp, cơn lốc xoáy) struck the building they were in. It’s reported that their cars were tossed down an embankment (đê).

Ví dụ
They tried to step on Rappler through a barrage (hàng rào, vật chắn) of cases and an attempt to revoke its license. To this day, by dint of courage and resilience, Rappler remains standing.

Within weeks of arriving, I met people I’d never be without again. People who would form me, and who I’d form back, by dint of our moving into adulthood together, moulding and defining each other’s experiences, senses of humour, belief systems. I’d call them my friends, but that doesn’t do them – or the depth, breadth and significance of our relationships – justice. It was the feeling I’d had, at Timepiece, at Christmas – times infinity. It was falling in love with my own life.

"Shiver me timbers" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Zoltan Tasi on Unsplash

"Shiver me timbers" -> câu bày tỏ sự ngạc nhiên (giễu) khi ai đó cố tỏ vẻ ra oai hoặc nghịch ngợm (ở trường, nơi công cộng), nhưng thực chất chỉ là đang gồng; "ôi sợ quá cơ".

Ví dụ
Shiver me timbers, porch pirates are back! Well, actually they never really left. You'll find thieves (ăn trộm) taking packages from porches (cỏng vòm) year-round, but with more people staying home during the pandemic comes an increase in online shopping and that means 'tis the season for thieves to take advantage.

Shiver me timbers, there'll be pirates aplenty (dồi dào) when sailing ship R. Tucker Thompson visits Whangārei next month. It may be a little later in the year - it's normally around May - but the sail training schooner (thuyền buồm dọc) is planning a short stay in Whangārei Harbour, when it will be based in Port Nikau from September 4-6.

Sad to say, it's extremely unlikely (không chắc) real-life pirates went around saying "shiver me timbers" in improbable (không có thật) cod-Bristolian accents, and if they went "aaargh" at any point it was probably because they'd trodden on something sharp.

“Shiver Me Timbers” is, in fact, a pirate’s expression of shock. In stormy, rough waters, the support timbers (gỗ) of a ship would literally "shiver (run rẩy)", which might startle a pirate crew. It’s not a phrase that was used often, but it got the point across!

The crime (tội ác) occurred (xảy ra) on 28 July, when the 64-year-old suspect entered a supermarket and allegedly stabbed (đâm, chọc) the baker’s dozen of melons with her finger at approximately 1:30 in the afternoon.

It’s important to note that these aren’t just ordinary (bình thường, tầm thường) melons, but the renowned Yubari King which often make headlines for selling at exorbitant prices (giá cắt cổ). The victimized melons had a combined worth of 14,000 yen (US$135).

Interestingly enough, no security (an ninh) cameras caught her in the act, so it is unclear (không rõ) how the police managed to track down (lần ra dấu vết) the culprit (thủ phạm). The nature of their detective work and the suspect’s motives have not been revealed, leaving it all open to wild speculation (nghi vấn, xôn xao).

“Fight a losing battle” nghĩa là gì?

“Fight a losing battle”= đánh một trận thua -> nghĩa là kiên trì, rất nỗ lực nhưng vẫn thất bại.

Ví dụ
Are we fighting a losing battle to prevent climate (khí hậu) change? Our climate is global and the challenge of preventing catastrophic (thảm khốc) environmental damage will require the cooperation of all nations – but is it too late to prevent climate change?

Granted, while I have loved, lost and had things blow up in my face, I don’t know what it is like to lose a presidential election; yet somehow, if I lost that election knowing more than 70 million people voted for me, it would not be humiliating (nhục nhã).

"It blew up in my face and I had to address it. I was like 'what am I doing here? I'm not living a life that I want' and that's why I had to get so pissed (say), to live in it." So one day on her lunch break, Green - 24 at the time - bought a ticket to India and quit her job.

When it happened, I didn't really want to tell anyone. And when I did tell a school counselor (cố vấn), it was her duty, of course, to report it to the school and it ended up blowing up in my face. It was a lot. "Hold up to ridicule" nghĩa là gì?

"Hold (someone or something) up to ridicule" -> nghĩa là chế giễu, chế nhạo ai/điều gì.

Ví dụ
If they tried to step out of the domestic sphere and use their God-given talents, they were held up to ridicule. It was an iniquitous (tội lỗi) state of affairs, but that was the way things were.

If it be the liberty of the press to afford informatlon on all subjects, it must frequently be the liberty of the press to hold men up to ridicule, because, as men are often enough ridiculous (lố bịch), information cannot be given respecting their characters or actions without presenting them in ludicrous lights.

There are some sick and twisted people out there, Alex - and maybe I'm one of them - but the point is, when you hold people up for ridicule, you have to take responsibility when other people act on it. Later on. Angela and I made out on her back porch (hiên nhà). I just couldn't get enough of those lips. All because of a list.

The purpose of comedy is conceived by Sumarokov as correction of morals through mockery (chế nhạo). The comedies are written in prose (văn xuôi) and in much more colloquial (thông tục), even demotic (bình dân), language than the tragedies, and they hold up to ridicule some recognizably Russian characters as well as the universal butts of comedy such as the fop (công tử bột), the idler (kẻ lười biếng), and the spendthrift (tiêu hoang).

Nhớ rửa thật sạch nào. Photo by Karolina Grabowska from Pexels

"Lather, rinse, (and) repeat" = tạo bọt, rửa và lặp lại -> nghĩa là hướng dẫn lặp lại các bước tương tự của một quy trình. Cụm từ thường thấy trên hướng dẫn sử dụng dầu gội đầu.

Ví dụ
What’s the use if they get caught, if they’re only handed a stadium ban and possibly a fine? They wouldn’t be the last fans to be so hateful. Lather, rinse, repeat. Fines and bans don’t eradicate prejudice (xóa bỏ định kiến).

Replicate a similar time allocation strategy (chiến lược phân bổ) for 4:00 and 5:00 power plays. When on the penalty kill, shifts should be much shorter. Essentially clear the puck deep then get off the ice for a change. Lather, rinse, repeat.

The solution was finally reached when, in the last interaction (part of what took so long was the tempo of reaching out, being told okay it’s fixed, wait for a billing cycle, find it’s not fixed, then call back to get the process started over again…lather, rinse, repeat…the longest shampoo ever), the agent escalated the issue to a supervisor.

The mental makeup of players from both sides should also be considered here. After more than two months of the lather, rinse, and repeat monotony (đơn điệu) of the bubble and living away from family and loved ones, the Gin Kings have all the motivation to finish the series tonight, especially with Christmas a couple of weeks away. It’ll also be sweeter if they come home as conquering (chinh phục) heroes with the handsome Philippine Cup trophy in tow.

"It's the same old rigmarole" có rigmarole là câu chuyện kể lể dông dài -> cụm từ này nghĩa là vẫn những việc đấy, câu chuyện đấy, tình huống/thói quen/quy trình... lặp đi lặp lại một cách nhàm chán, mệt mỏi.

Ví dụ
It was the same old rigmarole and Kwang Meng resolved not to get involved. Like every storm, it would abate in time. It did not call for any resistance (chống đối).

It was the same old rigmarole of 'reedin', 'ritin', and 'rithmetic', with never a question to test education, culture, or power to teach. After a half day's examination he gave me a certificate, and the school to somebody else.

And the reply came from more than a hundred voices, young and old. "Alseiass!" Will shook his head sadly. The same old rigmarole. The same old mumbo jumbo (tùm lum tùm la). But people were just as willing to buy it here as they had been in Hibernia.

For a while, Jimmy listened to him working himself up to the same old rigmarole of resentment (oán giận), then he hastily outlined Romney's plan for a trip up-river, with the obvious reservations about the reason for it. "It's not much," he explained. "Just up beyond the mud banks. That's all."

"Righty tighty, lefty loosey" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Miguel Á. Padriñán from Pexels

"Righty tighty, lefty loosey" = phải chặt, trái lỏng -> nghĩa là cách chơi chữ để ghi nhớ cách để xoay (ốc vít, nắp lọ chai...) dễ hơn. "Lefty" là quay ngược chiều kim đồng hồ và "righty" là quay theo chiều kim đồng hồ.

Ví dụ
One thing that’s important to note: All external nipples (ống nối) turn counterclockwise (ngược chiều đồng hồ) to tighten, opposite of the conventional “righty-tighty, lefty-loosey” wisdom. (If they are hidden inside the rim where you have to take off the tire to get to them, they tighten the normal way.)

Like many people, I’ve made jokes about this possibility over the years, so it’s interesting to see it happening. I may send a query (câu hỏi) out to area high school teachers to see if they notice it. Perhaps we need to switch to that screw-thread (ren vít) mnemonic (giúp ghi nhớ): “righty tighty, lefty loosey.”

Memories of dads are like that. The lessons they teach are for the long term. The knowledge lasts. I still can hear my father tell me such trite (lặp đi lặp lại) carpenter (thợ mộc) things as "measure twice and cut once" or that goofy-sounding screw (đinh vít) and bolt (bu-lông) thing about "righty-tighty and lefty-loosey." Funny, it hasn't sounded so odd in the moments I've actually recited it to myself over the years.

Thoải mái đi

Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.

Cuộc sống thực sự đơn giản, nhưng chúng ta nhất quyết làm cho nó phức tạp.

"Go out on the tiles" nghĩa là gì?

"Go out on the tiles" có on the tiles là ăn chơi trác táng, xả láng -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đi bar, sàn nhảy, tham gia các bữa tiệc thú vị, thường quá mức.

Ví dụ
Nicola Sturgeon said revellers (người tham dự cuộc vui) should think twice about how often it was necessary to go out on the tiles after data revealed (cho thấy) people in their 20s and 30s had accounted for around half of new laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 cases over the past week.

He told his followers on Twitter: “Hang over that bad think I going to stay another night in manny” before deciding to go out on the tiles again after a lazy day spent in his hotel room. He said: “Lazy Day in Hotel Room dinner at Rosso tonight!”

For a lot of you out there this article is going to be all too familiar (quen thuộc). But just incase those morning after headaches haven't already left you with some sort of memory loss, we'll remind you exactly what happens when you and your bestie (bạn thân) go out on the tiles.

At least we could go out on the tiles with full stomachs. With our son asleep and grandma babysitting (trông trẻ), my wife and I were unleashed: what would a night out in Butlin’s bring? Lots of cover bands, it turned out.
