"Perhaps a little later" nghĩa là gì?

"Perhaps a little later" = có lẽ để sau -> nghĩa là không phải hôm nay hay ngay lúc này.

Ví dụ
I do not believe that a vi-vaccine will be licensed for general use by the population until, in an optimistic scenario, really the second quarter, probably the end of the second quarter in 2021 and perhaps a little later than that.

"Protections during the rainy season are becoming a must for houses that are built years ago and now suffer leakages (bị dột). Jalsa was built around mid 80’s or perhaps a little later .. so time and weathering has its effects.." he wrote in his blog.

However, as it seeks to reopen its theaters this summer, it has had to ramp up its cash spending. While AMC believes it has enough of a cash reserve to resume operations this summer, or perhaps a little later, its liquidity (thanh khoản: khả năng thanh toán bằng tiền mặt) after that point remains in question.

"Cop it sweet" nghĩa là gì?

Chịu phạt. Photo by Farzad Sedaghat from Pexels

"Cop it sweet" (tiếng lóng) nghĩa là chấp nhận bị phạt/ đối xử hà khắc mà không hề chống trả hay phàn nàn. Chủ yếu dùng ở Úc.

Ví dụ
When you get corrected, cop it sweet! When circumstances challenge you, keep a great attitude! Mature people show great attitude when they're 'adjusted' (chỉnh đốn). The ability to accept correction is the doorway to progress.

He said they'd been arguing with their bosses constantly but had to accept defeat and 'cop it sweet', knowing that their mortgage (thế chấp) payments and car payments and other expenses had to be met each week. They just didn't want any more ovetime or shift-work.

Turned out occasionally to clinch (giải quyết) a deal, Dad would sometimes throw my services in, gratis (miễn phí), although this was not disclosed to me, not being in a child labor union, so had to cop it sweet in the hopes of a paid job further down the line I suppose.

So a male with dysphoria (bức bối giới) is able to say that he is a woman and women/females just have to cop it sweet or be silenced for daring speak up and say no. Its almost like female human rights are inferior (thua kém) to male rights as long as the male is wearing woman face...Disgusting

"Sweet and sour" nghĩa là gì?

Vừa chua vừa ngọt, càng thêm ngon miệng. Photo by Lisa Fotios from Pexels

"Sweet and sour" nghĩa là chua ngọt (chỉ hương vị) hoặc nói về món ăn được nấu với gia vị pha đường và giấm (liên quan đến ẩm thực Trung Quốc, phương Đông).

Ví dụ
Adding aquafaba (nước nấu từ đậu gà) to the mix makes this sweet and sour cocktail lighter and adds the frothy (bọt) layer you’d expect from a traditional amaretto sour.

There are Christmas options from this catering company including sweet and sour meatball appetizers, spinach lasagna (một loại mì ống) and chicken parmigiana entrees (món ăn đầu).

The Dragon’s Lair is made with dragon fruit, apple juice and cranberry (nam việt quất) accented with vanilla and mint, while The Panacea with sweet and sour, mint and elderflower (hoa cơm cháy) sounds worthy of its name.

Sweet and sour chicken — Chan's favorite childhood meal — is at the top of the entree menu. Chan's mom, Phyllis Eng Chan ran a restaurant with his dad, Ming, whose day job was chief of the Bureau of Laboratories with the Florida Department of Health. Whenever his mom didn't feel like cooking, she would bring sweet and sour chicken home from the restaurant for the family's dinner. Chan's version is slightly different and just as good, he said.

"Sweet as honey" nghĩa là gì?

Ngọt ngào như mật ong. Photo by Three-shots from Pexels

"(As) sweet as honey/pie/sugar" = ngọt như mật -> nghĩa là chỉ người vô cùng thân thiện, tốt bụng, ngọt ngào.

Ví dụ
“When Dr. Abiy came, we saw him as a good thing,” he said. “Our hopes were fulfilled, because his talk in the beginning was as sweet as honey, but now the honey has gone sour.”

It's so big and bright, so white, it's shiny. Such a beautiful smile, it's so sweet as honey. You're so perfect, it's crazy. Feeling like butterflies in my tummy, please always be happy, i love u.

“My sister was a smart, beautiful Black queen,” Crenshaw said. “She was about to be a certified RN in May 2021. Destiny loved her family more than anything & her nephew Arion the most. My sister was the most helpful & outgoing person you would meet. She was sweet as pie & didn’t bother anyone.”

Reviewing the Grammy-nominated (đề cử) ‘Dynamite’, which broke the record for most YouTube views in 24 hours upon its release in August, NME wrote: “Life might not be as “sweet as honey” as BTS sing right now but, on this song, they take you to a place where that feeling is viscerally (bản năng), dazzlingly real. Given everything that’s been thrown at us over the last six months, why would you turn your nose up at that?”

"Sweet young thing" nghĩa là gì?

"Sweet young thing" nghĩa là cô nàng trẻ trung, ngây thơ, dễ thương.

Ví dụ
Then they're sittin' in some bar with three bourbons (rượu uytky ngô) on the brain , thinkin' about all those years they wasted, and they look up and see some sweet young thing in a bikini bathin' suit, battin' her big eyes.

It's not the sort of place for a sweet young thing like you. She isn't sure if he's mocking (chế nhạo) her, she feels neither sweet nor young, but when she catches her reflection in the bar mirror, she sees clearly that she is a sweet young thing, relatively.

Ghastly? Charming! This sweet young thing is here, you will see her blushing like a violet by a mossy stone at dinner tonight. She will be too shy and too well brought up to say more than a word to you, but that will not prevent her from leading you into the Temple of Fame.

“In the first place, when I called your office, your secretary tells me you're out of town on business. She seems to think you went to Pittsburgh.” Paula sipped. “But when I call your stable (chuồng ngựa), some sweet young thing tells me you're in Boston at a friend's funeral (đám tang). We'll talk about the sweet young thing at the barn later."

"A nice little earner" nghĩa là gì?

"A nice little earner" -> nghĩa là công việc có thu nhập cao.

Ví dụ
The good news is, some employers choose to offer extra pay such as double time, so working the Christmas period can be a nice little earner.

If we were to be cynical (hoài nghi), we could say that IDC has run up a nice little earner with this new report. To date the firm has tracked HCI revenues (doanh thu) by software owner and systems brand.

Despite Cole's negative view of Arthur, audiences loved the dodgy (xảo quyệt) used-car dealer who was always on the lookout for a "nice little earner". The popularity was a tribute (tôn vinh) to Cole's acting and often he didn't even have to say anything. He mastered the art of the shifty (gian xảo) look and a subtle (tinh tế) change of facial expression (nét mặt) when things started to go wrong, which they often did.

“Know by name” nghĩa là gì?

“Know (something) by name” -> nghĩa là chỉ biết tên mà không biết mặt.

Ví dụ
Even if you don’t know it by name, the imposing futuristic vision of the Arecibo Observatory rising out of the rainforest is surely an image you’ve encountered along your travels through the internet.

Anita Hart says, she’s been dealing with this issue for about a year – and says she’s contacted the county so many times – they know her by name. “It’s gotten so bad that it’s a wreck,” she said. “They’re going to the bathroom, they’re throwing needles.”

Being the Mushroom has been transformative (biến đổi, biến dạng) for the next singer. His ultimate inspiration was his daughter. He copied her mannerisms (phong cách riêng) and personality, but she doesn’t even know he’s on the show! He says while most of us have heard his music on the radio, not many of us know him by name. He will sing his daughter’s favorite song for the grand finale, “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder. He’s got a grit in his voice we haven’t heard before, but I shouldn’t be surprised. He sounds different every week! He’s definitely killing this performance. Mushroom’s special gift is for Nicole — cookie dough ice cream.

“I wasn't brought up in the woods to be scared by owls” nghĩa là gì?

“I wasn't brought up in the woods to be scared by owls” = tôi lớn lên trong rừng không phải để sợ cú -> nghĩa là tôi không ngốc và dễ bị hù dọa (đâu).

Ví dụ
“This is my last warning to this lady, if you continue your vandalist (phá phách, bừa bãi) attitude that crosses the line against the MHP [Nationalist Movement Party], which you want to divide and destroy, you would have to brace yourself for its consequences. Don’t tell me I haven’t warned you, listen to your superior!” Bahceli said in his last tweet addressing Aksener. Aksener responded his threat by a Turkish idiom that translates to “I wasn’t brought up in the woods to be scared by owls,” adding the detailed address information of the headquarters of her IYI Party in her tweet.

“I wasn’t brought up in the woods to be scared by owls,” writes Tolokonnikova, and it’s this fearlessness that permeates both the book and its author, whom I met for coffee on a recent morning in Manhattan, where she’d been on a blistering pace of media appearances and readings—along with a surprise guest appearance onstage with Charli XCX the previous night at midnight. Tolokonnikova wore a black crocheted sweater over a buttoned-up white blouse and track pants—a style, I’d learn from her book, copped from Russian revolutionary Vera Figner, whom Tolokonnikova read while in the high-security prison at Omsk. “I decided that she is my style icon forever, with her rigor (cứng đơ) and dedicated look, her tightly buttoned shirts, her unimaginable combo of being harsh, ascetic (khổ hạnh), mighty, and slightly coquettish (quyến rũ, khêu gợi, làm dáng) at the same time.”

"Separate but equal" nghĩa là gì?

"Separate but equal" -> nghĩa là chia tách nhưng vẫn có giá trị, chất lượng như nhau. Phán quyết của Tòa án Tối cao Mỹ về chia tách chủng tộc.

Ví dụ
But his statement couldn't have been more accurate, or filled with more common sense. The last thing America needs is the “separate-but-equal” approach that Lee rightly excoriated (phê bình gắt gao).

Construction for the 5,800 units took place during the peak of the Jim Crow (người da đen) segregation laws but was completed once the Supreme Court ruled that “separate but equal” was deemed illegal.

I understand what my colleagues are trying to do and why. I respect what they’re trying to do. I even share their interests in ensuring that these stories are told. But the last thing we need is to further divide an already divided nation with an array of segregated (mảng tách biệt), separate-but-equal museums for hyphenated (người Mỹ lai) identity groups.

“Days gone by” nghĩa là gì?

“Days gone by” -> nghĩa là thời kỳ đã qua.

Ví dụ
Ably assisted by super sleuth (siêu thám tử) Shirley Holmes the pair used a time machine to journey back to Yuletides of days gone by – from Victorian England with Charles Dickens and the Stuart era when Oliver Cromwell and his puritans (thanh giáo, khắt khe, nghiêm ngặt) banned Christmas to ancient Turkey and finally the big day itself in Bethlehem.

Lots of good things have come from social media. It is highly satisfying to reconnect with a good friend from your school days and catch up, or talk about days gone by. However, bad things have come from it as well—and I’m not just referring to the pointless political arguments or the never-ending stream of “TMI” posts from your friends. But also, because people have the option to reconnect through social media, it is much easier to substitute virtual interaction for the real thing.

The memories flicker in my mind like twinkle lights from days gone by. The children from church sang hymns and Christmas songs, the old folks took the comfortable chairs and talked of old times. The widows gathered together to share their stories of challenge and hope. Children running around excited for what Christmas morning would bring. I can remember those times with great love. And yes, we continue to serve fruitcake at Christmas and yes, I have learned to love it! Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. – Hebrews 13:16

“Conspicuous by your absence” nghĩa là gì?

Mãi mãi không thể quay trở lại. Photo by pawel szvmanski

“Conspicuous by one's absence” -> nghĩa là việc vắng mặt (tại sự kiện, cuộc họp, buổi tiệc...) dễ dàng bị nhận ra.

Ví dụ
For a start the headline-grabbing efficacy (tính hiệu lực, hiệu quả) figure of 90% among patients who received a half-strength priming dose is still unexplained, with the researchers conceding that it is possible that chance might have played a part in this “intriguingly high” number. And data on older patients is still conspicuous by its absence – one of several holes that leave the jab’s chances of approval and labelling hard to judge.

Like Shoeless Joe Jackson and Pete Rose, Barry had brought scandal to the game I’d fallen in love with as a boy and now led as baseball’s ninth commissioner. I wasn’t going to sing his praises, as I’d done for Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa when they smashed Roger Maris’s single-season homer record in 1998, but I didn’t want to be conspicuous by my absence, either. So in a stretch of sixteen days I watched Bonds and the San Francisco Giants play nine times. It was not one of the highlights of my life.

“What I would like to say to Randy Delorey is this,” said MacLeod: “What has your administration done to protect long-term care residents prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus? It has been brought to your attention on many occasions the elderly were not being properly cared for and the Department for the Protection for People in Care were obviously not doing their job. The ACE Team has revealed 400 cases of neglect and abuse, on average, annually, some declared homicides, leaving families without closure or any sense of justice. Had the issues of chronic understaffing and underfunding, that the ACE Team and other health advocate groups were calling to be addressed, actually been addressed, the death rate presently happening in Northwood could have been much lower… You have been conspicuous by your absence during the daily media scrums and am just wondering if you are self isolating.”

"Under separate cover" nghĩa là gì?

"Under separate cover" có cover là bìa sách, phong bì -> cụm từ này nghĩa là trong lá thư riêng biệt.

Ví dụ
RV does have plans for a new race series to feature during the 2021 Festival of Racing, the details of which will be announced under separate cover shortly.

While the site assessments (đánh giá hiện trường) reportedly found that the vapor (hơi nước) anomalies (bất thường) expected in the vicinity (vùng lân cận) of oil and gas wells (giếng) did not occur in the 'building footprint', evidence of that information was not included in the report and GeoSyntec states it will be provided under separate cover at a later date.

"We do not support the Pay as You Throw (PAYT) and under separate cover proposed reductions in the garbage fund will be submitted to decrease the annual garbage fund fee should PAYT get voted down," Troy City Council President Carmella Mantello stated, echoing sentiments of her fellow (đồng nghiệp) Republican Council Members, Kim Ashe-McPherson and Jim Gulli.

“Clue-by-four” nghĩa là gì?

“Clue-by-four” có clue là manh mối -> cụm từ này nghĩa là (ẩn dụ) về việc dùng thước kẻ (2 x 4 inches, two-by-four) "gõ vào đầu" ai đó chậm hiểu (để họ "tìm ra manh mối").

Ví dụ
I see them ending up in Vermont because they are stubborn until Olivia gets hit by a clue by four and realizes she is a Pope.

If this poll is correct, Albertans finally got a clue-by-four, but it may already be too late to stop us from hurtling over Kenney's cliff.

Korra and Kaga stow away on a ship and wake up in STEAMPUNK CITY, where they quickly discover that having no money is an impediment to things like… eating! Korra catches and cooks some fish in the park, where she meets one of Republic City’s apparently quite large homeless population, her first hint that maybe everything isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. She gets hit with a clue-by-four yet again when she runs into a trio of mob enforcers (look, this show has MOB ENFORCERS) from the Triple Threat Triad trying to shake down a local shop owner for protection money.

“Cling on by my fingernails” nghĩa là gì?

“Cling on by one's fingernails” = bấu víu bằng móng tay -> nghĩa là khó tránh được vấn đề hoặc thất bại.

Ví dụ
Watching him cling on by his fingernails this November, one struggles to dispute Mary's belief that Trump's greatest fear is losing face in public.

If you’re a talented racing driver you might make it to the top flight, if you’re particularly lucky you’ll cling on by your fingernails for a few years, and if you’re extremely fortunate you’ll make a good bit of money doing it. Then you retire at 35 to your Monaco flat and have to eke out your savings until you die. It’s not all glamour, you know.

“I’m just about managing to cling on by my fingernails to the one enduring hobby I’ve had from the whole of my childhood and adult life, and that is aeroplanes,” he says. “I’ve had a private pilot’s licence since I was 17. Before that I was a glider (tàu lượn) pilot and before that an aeroplane modeller (người làm mô hình). I like mucking around with planes, and mucking around with wood. I would like to make an airplane out of wood. That would be my Nirvana.”

“By the numbers” = đúng từng con số -> nghĩa là chính xác/đúng với quy tắc, định hướng hay kế hoạch đề ra.

Ví dụ

Coronavirus vaccine distribution by the numbers. Millions of doses, thousands of flights, hundreds of cold storage locations — and one race to vaccinate the world.

They tell the story of women dropping out of the workforce in droves, companies catalyzed—at least on the surface—by the death of George Floyd, and a country where a quarter of households have had someone laid off. They point to a future where those who don’t have to don’t go into an office, at least not every day. Here’s our year at work, by the numbers.

We scrambled by main strength and awkwardness over the wrecked coach in which we had been riding and passing under the arched bridge, climbed the steep fill on the south side of the bridge, by pulling up briars (cây thạch nam) and stick weeds that left their marks in my hands to this day.

-----
...The journey from Vietnam to London would have cost most of them around £30,000 (924 triệu, gần 1 tỷ đồng); some had sold their family homes (bán nhà) or mortgaged (thế chấp) their land to fund the trip. Others had asked their parents to take out enormous loans (món nợ khổng lồ) to pay the people smugglers (bọn buôn người).

Some of the 39 travelled first to Russia, where they worked for a while, before deciding that they would try to continue onwards to the UK, where they believed they could earn better money in the Vietnamese-run nail bars (làm móng) found in almost every town.

Some flew initially to Germany, Hungary or Romania, their journeys arranged by employment agents who had found them work as fruit pickers (hái hoa quả) or dishwashers (rửa bát) in restaurants. Some flew to Poland, legitimately, on student visas (đi học ở ba lan), with the intention of travelling on to join friends or relatives in the UK once they had saved up enough money to pay for the final leg of the journey.

...the final crossing (đoạn cuối) to Britain would cost £12,000 (370 triệu đồng).

...Mimi Vu, an independent anti-trafficking and slavery expert based in Vietnam, said the smuggling of people from Vietnam to the UK continued in the months after the tragedy (thảm kịch). “The prices just went up,” she said, basing her observations (quan sát, nhận định) on interviews (phỏng vấn) conducted (tiến hành) with Vietnamese migrants (người di cư) in northern France earlier this year. “It didn’t dampen (làm nguội lạnh, làm nhụt chí) people’s enthusiasm for leaving. People tended to view this as an anomaly (sự không bình thường). They saw the people who died as just very unlucky (rất không may). Smugglers’ marketing tactics changed and they told people they needed to pay more to guarantee the safest passage.”

"Great with child" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ryan Franco on Unsplash

"Great with child" -> nghĩa là có bầu.

Ví dụ
There are several interesting details about the earthly (trần tục) parents of Jesus and of course His mother Mary becoming pregnant with Him while still being a virgin is a great place to begin.

But she was, as they say, great with child. Check that, great with great child. For this was the promised Messiah, this was the son of God, this was the baby to be born of a virgin in fulfillment of prophecy (lời tiên tri).

And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage (dòng dõi) of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

“Dr. Kirk, tomorrow is the day!” the young woman exclaimed. A petite (xinh xắn) blue-eyed blonde, she stood in line with her tall lanky husband at a local restaurant. I couldn’t help but notice that she was in a family way. The Biblical description is “great with child.” She was very pregnant.

"Scientia potentia est" nghĩa là gì?

"Scientia potentia est" -> nghĩa là 'tri thức là sức mạnh'.

Ví dụ
The Latin phrase ‘scientia potentia est’, which means ‘knowledge is power’, indicates just how crucial (quan trọng) a role knowledge, information, and education can play in our lives. Of late, this fact has been reinforced by the ongoing global pandemic, where knowledge about health and immunity (miễn dịch) has not only helped individuals avoid infection or recover from the disease, but it has also been the sole differentiator (phân biệt) between life and death in several instances.

In a similar vein, Biden can bridge our fractured (rạn nứt) polity and inspire all Americans to stretch toward the future. Francis Bacon is credited with the phrase “knowledge is power” (scientia potentia est). For Biden, power is knowledge, and presidential power can propel a dynamic new American knowledge society.

Knowledge is power (or scientia potentia est, as they say in east London). Oxford dons (ủng hộ) bid to improve inner-city pupils with centre for classical education in Hackney.

"Separate fact from fiction" nghĩa là gì?

"Separate fact from fiction" -> nghĩa là phân biệt giữa sự thật và hư cấu, bịa đặt.

Ví dụ
Maine health experts (chuyên gia y tế) separate fact from fiction regarding COVID-19 vaccine.

So we asked experts to separate fact from fiction to learn what really helps people drop the pounds.

We spoke with a microbiologist (nhà sinh vật học) who answered some of the questions you have been asking, helping to separate fact from fiction.

I would suggest the real train wreck (vụ đắm tàu) is that we can no longer trust the press to separate fact from fiction when reporting the news. The managing of the content, timing and availability of news in written or digital form has us scrambling to find accurate information.

"No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people" nghĩa là gì?

"No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people" = chưa ai từng phá sản vì đánh giá thấp trí thông minh của người Mỹ -> nghĩa là người bị lừa mà không biết hoặc tự vấn, vì thế mất tiền cho người khác.

Ví dụ
Apart from these serious flaws (lỗi) in intellect (trí tuệ), judgment and character (to put it politely), Trump’s entire personal and political identity was summed up but also contradicted by the circus master P.T. Barnum’s oft-quoted observation that “no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.” It is contradicted in two ways: Trump repeatedly went broke, and is likely to do so again. Second, in the end, his underestimate of the American people’s intelligence (especially the women and people of color he repeatedly disparaged (chê bai)) led a majority of these and other voters to defeat him soundly at the polls.

There is an art to molding and inspiring the disenfranchised (tước quyền) and ignorant. In this art Donald Trump is a maestro. The dispossessed souls in MAGA hats whom we see as backdrops at Trump’s super-spreader arena speeches represent the last few remnants of that once vast white majority which inspired H.L. Mencken in the 1920s to suggest that no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.

Once again proving the adage, often attributed to H.L. Mencken, that no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people, Sacha Baron Cohen resurfaced on Saturday June 27, spending his Shabbos at a “March for our Rights” rally in Olympia, Wash.

Others have noted as much. A few days ago, the Washington Post invoked (cầu khẩn) Mencken in an editorial expressing alarm about the popular support for Donald Trump with the Baltimore Sage's observation that "no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."

"If ever there was" nghĩa là gì?

"If ever there was" = nếu từ trước đến nay đã có (trường hợp)... -> nghĩa là nhấn mạnh tầm quan trọng hoặc khẳng định điều gì là đúng đắn, lý tưởng.

Ví dụ
Well, if ever there was a case to be made for employing my favorite measurement (phép đo) term — the ahem, "poop-ton" — this is it.

Sir, – If ever there was a case for an “all island” approach (tiếp cận), it is blindingly (mù quáng) obvious that it should have been adopted to tackle the Covid-19 crisis. However it has proved impossible to achieve, and even has not been seriously discussed or debated.

Because it's an exciting new blend (hòa trộn) from a whisky stalwart (khỏe mạnh) we’ve always loved, and it has the potential to become a fast classic. That, and the fact that it brings together 21 single malts from the 5 whisky regions of Scotland–that’s a blend with gravitas, if ever there was one.

If ever there was a rainy day (ngày mà buộc phải dùng tới tiền tích trữ), it's now. As COVID continues to take its toll (tổn thất) on our health, our economy and our ability to be with loved ones, politicians in Harrisburg and Washington continue to play games. In Harrisburg, legislators passed a budget on Nov. 20 that transfers unused COVID relief money to a rainy day fund instead of allocating it to people who need it now. If a pandemic doesn’t qualify for rainy day money, what does?

"Success depends on your backbone, not your wishbone" nghĩa là gì?

"Success depends on your backbone, not your wishbone" có backbone là nghị lực, sức mạnh, wishbone là hy vọng, ước mơ -> cụm từ này nghĩa là thành công đạt được nhờ sự cống hiến và nỗ lực.

Ví dụ

"Wolf down" nghĩa là gì?

"Wolf down" = ăn như sói -> nghĩa là ăn ngấu nghiến.

Ví dụ
It was late September on one of those balmy (dễ chịu) post-summer days when Gary Muth and David Farrell decided to amble down (đi thong thả) to visit some of the old gang that had retired and moved to or near Niagara Falls. A sort of Big Chill trip down memory lane where we could wolf down plates of hot chicken wings, fries with gravy and cheeseburgers with all the fixings.

For every Sharp Objects, whose steamy brooding frustrated audiences over time, there’s a Succession, which needed a slow burn (tình tiết chậm rãi) to build hype around a tough sell. Likewise, The Undoing had more than a month to draw viewers in, and then timed the finale for a holiday weekend seemingly designed to wolf down silly crime serials in a tryptophan haze (hoang mang; rối rắm).

Office workers foresaw (đoán trước) a welcome change of pace as they were banished (đày đi) to their living rooms at the start of lockdown. Frenzied commutes (những lần đi lại điên cuồng) would give way to lie-ins (ngủ nướng). Lunch, usually a pre-packaged sandwich wolfed down between meetings, could be savoured (nhâm nhi). They might even sneak in a mid-afternoon yoga session. For many the reality has been different.

People often say, 'failure teaches success', but failure 2 or 3 times and yet not seeing success anywhere is sometimes trying too hard to go the wrong way, wasting money is not worth it!

If you failed, then dispirit (chán nản) and quit (bỏ cuộc), you will truly fail. But if you treat the failure likes a chance to learn and understand why you failed. From that, you can improve and adapt a plan; it called: "Failure teaches success".

"Bob and weave" = nảy và lắc -> nghĩa là tránh né người/vật (bằng cách di chuyển cơ thể lên xuống nhanh chóng, từ bên này sang bên kia)

Ví dụ
"I call 2020 'the year of bob and weave', so we have just had to find anything possible to survive this," Morffi says.

“This season has been interesting. It’s been different,” Howard said. “But it’s been fun. We’ve been able to bob and weave, and adapt and adjust, and still put out a pretty good product.”

It was lively in my house. Verbal sparring (tranh cãi) that has taught me to bob and weave my way through life to the point where even in my later years I can still get off an occasional punch — or punch line, as it were.

Now I’m not a man that scares easily, but every time I see one of these sadistic (ác dâm) Santa’s helpers I simply freak out. They are supposed to be a fun prank but with those dead eyes that seem to follow you everywhere, I find them rather unpleasant. You can bob and weave all you want and those eyes will still be laser focused on you.

"Bits and bobs" nghĩa là những thứ đồ lặt vặt, nhỏ, linh tinh.

Ví dụ
In the end, and despite the procedural (thủ tục) bits and bobs attached, both an ACAS COT3 and a statutory (theo luật định) settlement agreement are just contracts.

Mark, 27, had been estranged (ghẻ lạnh) from his family for a couple years. Kirsty heard bits and bobs about his life on the local grapevine (tin vịt), though. She knew he had been jailed (bỏ tù) for an assault in a nightclub; and that he had been released.

Finally got my book. Apparently good ol’Klause mailed this out to government leaders all over the planet. Our premier received a copy but said he won’t read it. I’ll read it for the simple reason I want to understand it. The future is made from the bits and bobs of all things.

In addition to a body double, Arterton explained that they had incredible wigs. "I have to give credit to the amazing makeup artist Nicole Stafford because you can't tell that it's a wig, it's amazing." Arterton confessed "I was very grateful that I didn't have to shave it all off but I did bits and bobs." If you're wondering, all of her shaved "bits and bobs" hair has now grown back.

"Been bobbing for (French) fries" nghĩa là chỉ mặt ai xấu xí, gớm ghiếc như vừa úp mắt vào nồi chiên khoai tây.

Ví dụ
Is it just me or do Trump's sons always look like they've been bobbing for french fries in a deep fryer?

What is the shade name of Trump’s new bronzer (đánh khối)? Looks like he's been bobbing for fries. Again.

Oh I can tell. My hair gives it away. By day 2 it feels slightly damp (ẩm) from oil and by day 3 it’s like I’ve been bobbing for French fries.

Trump also took to Twitter to address a widely-mocked photo in which he looked like he'd been "bobbing for French fries." Of course, he claimed the image had been digitally altered (chỉnh sửa). And of course, Colbert was having none of it.

"Not short of a bob or two" nghĩa là gì?

"Be not short of a bob or two" = không thiếu 1-2 xu -> nghĩa là giàu, đầy tiền. "Bob" là cách gọi khác của đồng silinh (đồng tiền kiểu cũ của Anh)

Ví dụ
Why don't you marry Dye, he's not short of a bob or two. You can live in his house and you'll be fine.

Alfie took no notice of what other people said or thought. Still single and living with his mother in a fine house overlooking the harbour (bến cảng), he was not short of a bob or two and enjoyed life to the full.

Once settled in Henry's study, with Henry in full spate (nói một tràng dài) about his newly discovered—or rather, rediscovered—contempt (coi thường) for the popular medium of television, Mark considered Lansdale Gardens and perceived that Henry was not short of a bob or two.

A few weeks later Hugo moved into Lowndes Square, and over the next few months he returned to a lifestyle he assumed was his by right. Several chums (bạn thân) commented on how lucky he was to have the company of such a charming and beautiful woman, and some of them couldn't resist adding, “And she's not short of a bob or two.”

"The sweet smell of success" nghĩa là gì?

"The sweet smell of success" = hương vị ngọt ngào của thành công -> nghĩa là cảm giác hưng phấn khi thành công, chiến thắng.

Ví dụ
A project to help a wide range of insects (côn trùng) to flourish (nảy nở) by providing more flower meadows (đồng cỏ) in Strathspey has enjoyed the sweet smell of success.

Jacksonville Classical Academy, west of Brooklyn in Mixon Town, is located on Forest Street near Interstate 95. It is just a few months old but already it has the sweet smell of success.

One local business is doing just that. Upland South Candles employs two individuals who help create the company’s candles, and because of that they are enjoying the sweet smell of success.

"Great boast, small roast" nghĩa là gì?

Một năm khó khăn. Photo by Jakayla Toney on Unsplash

"Great boast, small/little roast" nghĩa là (tục ngữ) trăm voi không được bát nước xáo, hứa thật nhiều thất hứa thì cũng thật nhiều.

Ví dụ
As Siddhu in his commentary would say big boast small roast, all the great cities that Nitish promised to build have gone for a toss (rơi vào quên lãng) with one flood!!!

Your govt has failed to manage the Corona pandemic in bihar. No proper management, lack of planning is costing people's life. The testing is very low and so is the number of covid dedicated (chuyên dụng) hospitals. Just great boast small roast.

A reminder to Duncan Abigaba & Co. that COVID-19 is a global pandemic that has put many countries in an economic crisis. Despite being in the 'midro income' class, the Ug economy is being severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Great boast, small roast!

No doubt about positive changes in Uzbekistan. I agree PR is needed but this won't be effective without genuine reforms (cải cách) on the ground. As we say in Uzbek: 'Usti yaltiroq, ichi qaltiroq' which translates as 'great boast, small roast' or 'fine feathers don't make fine birds'.

"Not anything to boast about" nghĩa là gì?

Không biết tự hào điều gì mà mặt vênh thế ta. :D Photo by Perchek Industrie from Pexels

"Not anything to boast about" hoặc "not much to boast about" nghĩa là không có gì đặc biệt, tẻ nhạt, tầm thường, không đáng để khoe ra. "Boast" là khoe khoang, kiêu hãnh.

Ví dụ
The man who has not anything to boast of but his illustrious (lừng lẫy) ancestors is like a potato — the only good belonging to him is under ground.

The drama has not anything to boast about. Its average is disgracefully (hổ thẹn) low. It has failed the public, which has turned to the motion picture.

I boast about it to everyone at school, but really it is not anything to boast about because it seems like there is just not enough Television to go round these days and Daddy is often out of a job. And this makes him cold and sad and grey.

If I'd answered, I'd have had to reveal that I didn't know why we were going to prison, who we were going to see or why I was included. Ignorance (ngu dốt) was not anything to boast about; it was much better to let Belcott think I was withholding information deliberately (thận trọng). I skipped back down the steps. “Good luck with the inquiries.”

"Anchoring bias" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Lucas Sankey on Unsplash.

"Anchoring bias" = lệch lạc trong neo tham chiếu -> nghĩa là xu hướng quá tập trung vào thông tin đầu tiên mình nghe thấy đến mức lấy thông tin đó làm tiêu chuẩn để ra quyết định.

Ví dụ
Avoiding anchoring bias is key, Santhosh says. “All people who present to your clinics with COVID do not necessarily have complications (biến chứng) of COVID. We have seen missed diagnosis (chẩn đoán) of malignancies (khối u ác tính) and autoimmune (tự miễn dịch) conditions that people erroneously (một cách sai lầm) attributed to ‘just post-COVID.’”

The anchoring bias focuses discussions on a particular price point rather than to the intrinsic value (giá trị nội tại) of the subject being negotiated. From an investment perspective, investors succumb to anchoring when viewing a current share price relative to its trading history rather than the price of the share in relation to its intrinsic value.

While the anchoring bias is certainly annoying when trying to win guessing games, it can have even graver effects on financial decision making. Many of our money choices aren’t entirely rational to start with, and the anchoring bias is likely to skew our choices even further. Unfortunately, clever sales people can easily take advantage of this fact.
