"Blues and twos" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Erik Mclean on Unsplash

"Blues and twos" -> nghĩa là các phương tiện khẩn cấp, như xe cảnh sát, xe cứu thương.

Ví dụ
Cop shows have been particularly fertile (màu mỡ) ground for documentaries and their naughty twins, mockumentaries. So it was only a matter of time before Scot Squad (BBC Scotland, Thursday) put on the blues and twos and raced on to the scene in a 2012 pilot, followed by a full series two years later.

I had to suppress (nén lại) a chuckle (cười thầm) at the end when Martin Giles asked if a police vehicle was being driven on blues and twos because “the canteen was closing”. Unless they’ve been reintroduced recently, police station canteens in Surrey and probably most other forces are a thing of the dim and distant past.

Letting emergency vehicles pass with the blues and twos blaring (om sòm) can be a nerve-wracking experience, even for experienced drivers.

I didn't see anyone go in the ambulance but as the doctor came back to the helicopter the ambulance sped away with emergency blues and twos.

Điều cần làm ngay để không gặp nguy hiểm khi chơi Facebook

nếu đồng nghiệp cũ xin kết bạn thì chấp nhận ngay nhé, bị dọa giết vì mãi ko accept đấy... :D

Police allege that Caleb Burczyk, 29, sent a series of threatening texts and Facebook messages to Robert Allen Thomas, a 39-year-old resident of Williston, a city about 80 miles south of the Canadian border.

Burczyk, formerly worked with Thomas (and Thomas’s brother-in-law) for a company that maintains oil and gas wells (giếng). But after Thomas and his relative left to work for another firm, Burczyk was laid off and has remained unemployed (thất nghiệp).

"Don't knock it till you've try it" nghĩa là gì?

"Don't knock it till you've try it" có knock là lời phê bình kịch liệt, lời chỉ trích gay gắt -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đừng đánh giá điều gì khi chưa trải nghiệm nó.

Ví dụ
"Don't knock it till you try it, Eric. Cold pizza is the breakfast of champions."

Such statements basically show that DxOMark experts are skeptical of the iPhone 12 Pro Max's camera, and they are unlikely to score high for a new Apple product. However, don't knock it till you've try it, but wait for a full review from DxOMark.

Stress can make you too sensitive. Don't knock it till you've try it. Ask instead of making assumptions (giả định). Energy today offers an opportunity to correct old mistakes. Relax more and find a reason to laugh. Good movies and happy friends can lift your spirits.

"Do my utmost" nghĩa là gì?

"Do/try my utmost" có utmost là tối đa, cực điểm -> cụm từ này nghĩa là làm hết sức mình.

Ví dụ
If I spot (phát hiện) a gap in my timetable in the middle of the day, I’ll do my utmost to get some sun. It’s sorely (rất nhiều) needed here in England in December, when the hours of dry daylight are few and far between.

"I will do my utmost to uphold (duy trì) their tradition and be a district-centric member of Congress that is responsive (đáp ứng nhiệt tình) to all constituent (cử tri) inquiries and a relentless (không ngừng) fighter for an economy that works for everyone," he said.

I resolve (quyết tâm) more fervently (nồng nhiệt) and with more determination than I generally give New Year’s resolutions to do my utmost to stay safe and to keep those around me safe. That extends to getting a COVID-19 vaccination as soon as my turn comes up -- and to holding officials accountable for any failures to vaccinate Ohioans (người dân Ohio) as efficiently and expeditiously as possible.

"Suck hind tit" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Sneha Cecil on Unsplash

"Suck hind tit" = bú ti dưới cùng -> nghĩa là xếp hạng dưới cùng, hoặc gần như bét bảng; nghĩa khác là nhận được ít phần nhất hoặc ít giá trị nhất, không như mong muốn.

Ví dụ
I weigh 27kg, so thick, stiffwall tires are like taking a tennis ball from my Labrador and using it for match play, dead as a door nail and suck hind tit for trialsy riding that I expect to have during trail rides.

Derek Mason is a great guy and a proven defensive guru (người có uy tín). I hate to see him go. He could have made a success elsewhere. But winning is the key and that’s what matters in sports. As an ex-Tenn resident, Vandy is always gonna “suck hind tit”, to use Tenn terms, to the Volunteers in money. Vandy is very successful in other sports, they just need to modernize their mentality, when it comes to football. Good luck, Derek, and God speed (thượng lộ bình an).

When you sign a contract to work somewhere and request an advance and then suck hind tit at work and get canned (sa thải), you should owe that money back.

One of my closest friends is on the edge of closing up shop. He is despondant (nản lòng) after nearly a decade of 12+/7 work. Yup, welcome to the brave new world. I guess he can suck hind tit for 99 weeks no? Wait, he won't because some of us won't and the self employed don't qualify.

"Suck the big one" nghĩa là gì?

Ôi không, ngã rồi!!! Photo by Brusk Dede on Unsplash

"Suck the big one" -> nghĩa là rất tệ, đáng thất vọng, xáo trộn, rối loạn.

Ví dụ
These are all non-essential items. Disney has no problem with overpricing (tăng giá quá cao) their parks, merchandise (hàng hóa), food, and hotel rooms. Disney has no problem with kids who’d like to go can’t because their parents are priced out of ever being able to go. Disney can suck the big one.

Sorry BGHW but even I know that the skill level of the labor (lao động) market in Prineville doesn’t measure up to the skill level required to construct these data centers. Zuckerberg and Facebook may suck the big one and should never have been given the tax breaks to build there, but they needed skilled labor to build these 9 buildings.

Watching the Heat suck the big one against the Celtics on Sunday, I noticed Chris Bosh frustrating (làm khó chịu) my basketball shorts like the frustration I receive watching Carlos Boozer at many times. So, I went to the comparison machine at Basketball-Reference.com and found this.

The building is pretty ugly. They should have just repurposed the old city hall into housing because this building is about as close to that ugliness as you can get. The city must be into retro (hoài cổ). The mayor should move back to old city hall if he loves this architecture (kiến trúc) so much. Turn the new city hall into student housing for SJ state with theaters built in or lecture rooms. San Jose planners really suck the big one.

“Carrying on like a pork chop” nghĩa là gì?

“Carrying on like a pork chop” = xèo xèo như miếng thịt heo (đang rán) -> nghĩa là hành động ngớ ngẩn, làm ầm ĩ lên (la lối om sòm).

Ví dụ
"The RSL is a $400 million company with a billion dollars worth of assets and we've got a highly paid CEO carrying on like a pork chop," Mr Moon said.

Sky News host Peter Gleeson says “the very hairy chested China is carrying on like a pork chop” in the wake of Australia’s successful push for an inquiry (điều tra) into the coronavirus, approved by the WHA on Tuesday.

I’d just been dropped by the state team, I was carrying on like a pork chop. He pinned me up against the locker in the changing room and said ‘Mate, you’ve got to pull your head in, otherwise you’re going to lose your cricketing (bán hàng) career very quickly.

“Chuck up the sponge” nghĩa là gì?

“Chuck up the sponge” = vứt miếng xốp (lau sàn) -> nghĩa là bỏ việc đang cố làm, bỏ cuộc đấu, chấp nhận thất bại.

Ví dụ
Hobbs confessed that he felt very sick after the two dismissals (sa thải) and was almost inclined to ‘chuck up the sponge’.

It is time for me to chuck in the sponge. To retire from films and stage. The heart for it has gone out of me: it won’t come back.

In boxing, a fighter’s cornerman throwing a towel into the ring has traditionally been a sign of surrender, quitting or giving up. But in earlier times, it was a sponge that was hurled, and “chuck up the sponge” was the more common phrase.

"Going to tattle" nghĩa là gì?

"Going to tattle" -> nghĩa là sẵn sàng báo công an về hành vi xấu của ai.

Ví dụ
Jarrett Bayliss knows what you’re hiding, but he’s not going to tattle on you. “I have become the least judgmental (phán xét) person you’ll probably ever meet,” Bayliss said from behind his desk. “I’m sure there’s something I’ll see for the first time, but I’ve seen almost everything.”

Nadia is, as always, the better person in the situation. She was never going to tattle about Lu and Valerio—though Lu did share that video of Nadia with the entire school.

I'd originally placed my bets (đặt cược) on Aaron winning the whole damn thing, but ever since he turned into the class snitch he's had an utter fall from grace in my books. Hot tip mate, if you're going to tattle on all your friends during your Big Brother-esque diary cam, don't film it on your balcony (ban công) directly above everyone's bedrooms.

And the victim said they weren't going to tattle? Honestly, there's a gun problem up there, and it's not with licensed concealed (che giấu) carry permit holders, hunters, or even "assist rifle" owners.
