"Flag of convenience" nghĩa là gì?

Vidar Nordli-Mathisen on Unsplash

"Flag of convenience" = lá cờ tiện nghi -> nghĩa là lá cờ được treo trên thuyền để đăng ký miễn thuế và một số quy chế khi ra nước ngoài.

Ví dụ
Using a flag of convenience is a widespread but controversial (gây tranh cãi) practice. It allows vessel owners to save on taxes, bypass labour regulations, and avoid tougher oversight and increasingly stringent environmental checks that their own countries may require.

Additionally, Crumlin said the problem has been exacerbated (làm trầm trọng) by large companies like BHP and Rio Tinto choosing to replace Australian vessels with “flag-of-convenience ships” which are registered in tax havens and crewed by seafarers paid as little as $2 an hour.

But by offering shipowners a flag of convenience, the country of just 17,500 people has become involved in one of the world’s most contested foreign policy issues.

A ship follows the laws of the flag it flies, not that of the ship’s owners or operators (nhà điều hành). The Panamanian flag is a “flag of convenience.” Flags of convenience, or open registries, have more lax labor and environmental regulations, and lower thresholds for safety and insurance provisions.

Ôi, không

camera máy tính, như mắt người... :D

Inspired by animatronics, Eyecam attaches to the front of a computer monitor and looks left and right – and even blinks (nháy mắt) – while tracking the face of each individual during a video call.

At first glance, it looks scarily realistic, right down to the wrinkles in the skin, the individual hairs that make up the eyebrows and the red vessels over the white of the eye.

Eyecam – which is comprised of motors surrounded by 3D-printed silicone – is open source, meaning you could create your own version at home.

Biến khỏi quán của tao!

The leader of the opposition (lãnh đạo đảng đối lập) Labour Party in the U.K., Sir Keir Starmer, was thrown out of a pub by the landlord while visiting people in the English city of Bath. The landlord said Starmer hadn’t done enough to oppose (phản đối/chống đối) lockdown measures (các biện pháp phong tỏa), which are still operating throughout the U.K.

"First out of the gate" nghĩa là gì?

Keith Hardy on Unsplash

"First out of the gate" = ra khỏi cổng đầu tiên -> nghĩa là người đầu tiên làm công việc mà tất cả mọi người đều tán thành, cùng làm.

Ví dụ
U.K.-based Darktrace seems likely to be first out of the gate after the detection (khám phá) and response firm announced its intention to go public on the London Stock Exchange.

The new mid-engined C8 Corvette may have drawn some controversy (tranh cãi) when it first launched (partly for ditching its traditional front-engined layout, partly for its admittedly unusual interior), but it's safe to say it's since proven to be quite a success. It's won prestigious awards, and has proven among the fastest-selling cars on sale in 2021.

Blame J D, a son of Blame and maternal (họ ngoại) grandson of Speightstown, was first out of the gate but surrendered the pace in the backstretch to Dusty Hill.

I know he’s deflecting (làm chệch hướng) by laughing, but seriously, he’s already reinvented the wheel — he was the first out of the gate to set a new standard.

"Want to make of it?" nghĩa là gì?

"Want to make of it?" -> nghĩa là "muốn chiến không?", lời đe dọa bắt đầu cuộc tranh cãi căng thẳng (về những điều lặt vặt, đáng lẽ dễ bỏ qua).

Ví dụ
A: "Think you're being funny, huh? Do you want to make something of it?" B: "No, I'm sorry, I simply wasn't thinking when I said that about your marriage. That's all."

Tom: You're really bugging me. It's not fair to pick on me all the time. Bill: You want to make something of it? Bob: Please be quiet. You're making too much noise. Fred: Do you want to make something of it?

A: "I heard your dad got fired for drinking on the job again." B: "That's right, want to make something of it? Because I'd be more than happy to wipe that smug grin off your face!"
Yeah, I dropped out of high school, so what? You want to make something of it?

"Stop the world, I want to get off" nghĩa là gì?

"Stop the world, I want to get off" -> nghĩa là "muốn thoát khỏi thế giới đầy mệt mỏi này!", (hài hước) muốn thoát khỏi sự hỗn loạn của cuộc sống hàng ngày.

Ví dụ
One of Mafalda’s most quoted passages was: "Stop the world, I want to get off."

April Fools' Day has inspired some great popular music. The headline up there is one of my favorites, by Anthony Newley, from a 1960s Broadway musical he starred in and wrote, bearing the always timely, head-spinning title of "Stop the World, I Want to Get Off."

The first phase of the pandemic brought grief and loss to many hundreds of thousands across the world – a tally of death that would eventually rise beyond 1.5m – but in among the fear and the stress, it also imposed a rare and unfamiliar pause. An old refrain, resonant because of its futility, is "Stop the world, I want to get off."

"Able to breathe again" nghĩa là gì?

"Able to breathe again" = (đã) thở lại được rồi -> nghĩa là phục hồi sức khỏe sau khoảng thời gian bận rộn, căng thẳng.

Ví dụ
Cancer patient's ability to breathe again' after getting vaccinated.

Across the Liffey in Leinster House, officials were flying through the ballots (phiếu). Soon, the nation would be able to breathe again.

After a long, hectic summer, many parents feel like they are able to breathe easy again once their kids are back in school.

George Floyd’s family: 'Today, we are able to breathe again'. His family expressed gratitude that Derek Chauvin was convicted on all charges.

"Want of thought" nghĩa là gì?

"Want of thought" có want là không đầy đủ, không có -> cụm từ này nghĩa là thiếu suy nghĩ.

Ví dụ
He trudged (lê bước) along unknowing what he sought, and whistled as he went for want of thought.

Help us, O Lord, to remember how often men do wrong through want of thought, rather than from lack of love; and how cunning are the snares (cái bẫy) that trip our feet.

It is clearly a vast (rất lớn) inconvenience to each of these to make any change, and they are fretful (cáu kỉnh) and talkative, and all their friends are, and those less interested are inert (trì trệ), and, from want of thought, averse (không thích) to innovation.

"Live in want" nghĩa là gì?

"Live in want" có want là tình trạng nghèo khó, thiếu thốn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là sống trong cảnh nghèo khó.

Ví dụ
I recently stumbled (tình cờ) upon an article published by Gonzaga University, and its message resonated (tạo ra tiếng vang), "solidarity (đoàn kết) with those who live in want.

Born the tenth of twelve children during the Great Depression (thời kỳ Đại suy thoái), Albert knew what it was to live in want. At 18, struck by Crohn's disease, he nearly died. He had his first ostomy (cách mổ để tạo nên hậu môn nhân tạo) surgery on his twentieth birthday and remained grateful all his life for the care he had received from his revered mother.

A grateful nation takes care of those who are prepared to lay down their lives to protect our motherland. No soldier must live in want and destitution (cảnh nghèo túng). Our Defence Policy (Chính sách Quốc phòng) will therefore place emphasis on ensuring the personal wellbeing (tình trạng hạnh phúc, khoẻ mạnh) and welfare (phúc lợi) of our soldiers.

"Fender bender" nghĩa là gì?

Michael Jin on Unsplash

"Fender bender" ->  nghĩa là vụ tai nạn xe hơi không có nhiều thiệt hại và không ai bị thương.

Ví dụ
A fender bender in a Walmart parking lot escalated into an argument (leo thang) between the drivers, and now one is dead from a bullet to his neck and the other is facing a murder charge.

A soapy windshield and conflicting (đối lập) stories were both factors in why the B.C. small claims courts failed to find anyone liable after a fender bender at a Vernon car wash left two drivers and the business owner all pointing the finger of blame at each other.

Of all the bad things that can happen involving a car, a fender bender is perhaps a best-case scenario (kết quả tốt nhất có thể)-type of accident. Not so if you’re at the wheel of an insanely priced Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport.

Another story that stands out starts at about 10:20 in the video. A Ford Mustang hits a Model 3 from behind going less than 10 mph. It was a fender bender that caused light damage to both vehicles.

"Door swings both ways" nghĩa là gì?

Sara Darcaj on Unsplash

"Door swings both ways" = cửa xoay hai chiều -> nghĩa là cả hai cách đều được, không nhất thiết cứ phải rập khuôn.

Ví dụ
Others, I think Izzo and Michigan State experimented with, and it didn't work. I am not concerned in this modern era (kỉ nguyên) with losing players, the door swings both ways, and they have people coming in.

While so much has been made of the players leaving Temple, Carey chooses to look at the other side of the equation (phép toán). “I like our team makeup,” he said. “You know, the door swings both ways in the transfer portal.”

The door swings both ways with what can be a powerful tool (công cụ). Here’s a look at what the new IT Rules for 2021 mean for the future of social media in the country

Unfortunately the door swings both ways, and while the visitors have gotten some positive news on the injury front, one of their most important individuals will be out for the first leg of this tie.

"Day in the sun" nghĩa là gì?

Dawid Zawiła on Unsplash

"Day in the sun" = ngày được mặt trời chiếu rọi -> nghĩa là được công nhận, chú ý sau quãng thời gian dài mòn mỏi chờ đợi.

Ví dụ
Radio-based learning gets its day in the sun in Mali. Solar-powered (năng lượng mặt trời) radios are helping conflict-affected and displaced children follow lessons outside of the classroom. Persistent  (dai dẳng) insecurity in central and northern Mali has helped fuel a protracted (kéo dài) humanitarian crisis, disrupting access to education, health and other services, and displacing more than 300,000 people – more than half of them children.

Although he was never involved in their Hampden squads, they were great times for Robson. With the club back in the Premiership, he hopes the Terrors can emerge from five years in the wilderness for another shot at their day in the sun.

A consistent (kiên định) contender (đối thủ) no matter where he goes, Fakir turned out a more ruthless side in the 2m4f contest when squeezing out Nuts Well just as his rival looked to be leading a charge for glory. “He deserved his day in the sun, he’s been running savage races all year without getting his head in front,” Walsh said.

“She went on and had a second winner and then had six. I thought, ‘brilliant, she’s had her day in the sun now, that’s it’. She had a winner then on the first day of Aintree but coming up to the big race, I just said ‘please God just bring her home safe’ and that’s the absolute (hoàn toàn) truth and I mean it for all the jockeys.

"Cream rises to the top" nghĩa là gì?

Emile Mbunzama on Unsplash

"Cream rises to the top" = bọt kem trên cafe/chè -> nghĩa là người hay điều tốt đẹp rồi sẽ thu hút chú ý, nổi bật so với phần còn lại.

Ví dụ
As expected, even in this crazy, truncated (cắt xén) season, the cream rises to the top. Arlington High School volleyball swept past Ketcham on Tuesday, 25-13, 25-16, 25-18, in a Section 1, Dutchess Region semifinal to earn another crack at John Jay in Thursday’s championship game.

“In some ways it was the pandemic itself that caused […] Utah to continue to rise to the top,” Miller said. “We always say that the cream rises to the top, and that happens when we have challenges, and certainly this past year has been just that, not just on the health side but on the economic (kinh tế) side.”

“Boxing has always had gimmicks (mẹo quảng cáo). At the end of the day, the cream rises to the top, and the true tough guys will stand out,” he said.

He and I always talked about that many many times and I'd always tell him 'be patient (kiên nhẫn), don't get frustrated' because you have talent and the cream rises to the top. He's definitely going to rise to the top.

"Caveat emptor" nghĩa là gì?

Xavi Cabrera on Unsplash

"Caveat emptor" -> nghĩa là người mua phải chịu hoàn toàn trách nhiệm về chất lượng sản phẩm.

Ví dụ
Caveat emptor is Latin for "let the buyer beware." In business, it means the buyer purchases at his own risk with no warranty (bảo hành) in the contract. It implies a warning to buyers the goods (mặt hàng) they are buying are "as is" or subject to defects.

But now there is little to no forbearance (kiên trì). Banks are fighting back against fraud (lừa đảo), not only by putting scam warnings everywhere – like gruesome pictures on a cigarette packet – but they also appear to have resurrected (hồi sinh) 'caveat emptor'.

The rest of the marks are questionable. In this collecting category fake and spurious (giả mạo) marks are common. That is the situation with your pot. As they say in the world of antiques (đồ cổ), caveat emptor.

It is a system of caveat emptor – buyer beware – for those travelling. Over the next few months there is a reasonable chance that some limited number of people could have their travel plans interrupted.
