The ruling stems from a case in which phone location data was gathered about a man suspected (and eventually convicted) of armed robberies of Detroit-area Radio Shack and T-Mobile stores.

Location data is used for all kinds of things; wireless companies can use it to help figure out how heavy traffic is in certain spots at certain times of day, and they also aggregate and sell it to other companies that can use it for marketing and other purposes. It can also be used to track your whereabouts (such as whether you were near a bank around the time it was robbed).

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote in his majority opinion that the decision "is a narrow one," and that it won't affect the ability to use location data for emergencies or situations related to national security.

Dear Dan,

I hate exercise and always have, but I’ve recently started going to a spinning class, which I hate less than other forms of exercise. At the end I usually feel pretty good, but getting there is still a struggle. How can I motivate myself to go?

—Amy

Clearly your future self wants to exercise, so why not help yourself along? You could arrange to work out with a good friend, which would provide encouragement and social pressure. And when she’s not available, you could make a deal with her: You have to text her a new photo of yourself sweating at the end of the class or else pay her $20. My guess is that the social pressure coupled with the financial incentive will compel your future self to exercise.

If neither of these approaches works, try setting up a regular meeting with an especially annoying colleague just before your scheduled spinning class. That way, you’ll be eager to get out the door, and after the meeting, the cycling will feel like a joy.
đây nhé, ko mất 100k :)

"Breast wheel" nghĩa là gì?

chuẩn breast wheel... Photo courtesy micadew.

'Breast wheel' là guồng nước đầu nguồn, guồng nước lòng suối (a waterwheel onto which the water is led at about axle height and which acts partly by impulse and partly by the weight of the descending water in the buckets).

Ví dụ
There have been some changes since the old days. The mill’s gone from an overdraft wheel system to a breast wheel. And the main wheel is no longer powered by the flow of Rock Creek, whose waters are too unreliable: anemic one day, overpowering the next. Instead, buttons are pushed and switches are thrown to release city water. That’s right: Peirce Mill is run by a giant tap. Because the water is chlorinated, it can’t be released into the creek. So it’s a closed loop, recirculated to power the wheel.

From the storehouses we passed into the factory, and there we were first led to see the huge water-wheel which drives the powerful machinery that is required in the various processes. A large door opened on the site of the wheel-pit, and we stood within a few feet of an immense breast-wheel, 50 feet in diameter, said to be the largest in the world; we could well believe it, as we saw its vast dark beams dripping with cool water drops, and revolving heavily before us, with an appearance of irresistible force which was wholly new.

Dear Dan,

My wife and I alternate who loads and unloads the dishwasher. If she’s the loader and I’m the unloader, I often notice that she has placed certain items facing away from the water jets. My own research suggests that this isn’t the most effective way to get things clean. I haven’t seen a lot of residual bits of food on our dinnerware, but my wife’s habit still bothers me. Should I make some comment about dishwasher arrangements, hoping to give her a learning opportunity, or maybe suggest that we read the instruction manual together? Or should I just forget about it and let the crumbs fall as they may? We are otherwise happily married.

—Michael

If loading the dishwasher were the only issue in your relationship (now or in the future), I would recommend an evening with the instruction manual and other sources on optimal dishwasher use. But it’s probably not going to be the only small annoyance (điều khó chịu, điều trái ý) in your marriage (hôn nhân)—minor (nhỏ, không quan trọng, thứ yếu) irritations (phát cáu, chọc tức) are a natural part (một phần tự nhiên) of a healthy relationship (quan hệ lành mạnh). So I suggest that you consider this an opportunity (cơ hội) for personal (cá nhân) growth (quá trình lớn lên, phát triển, trưởng thành). Since your wife’s method doesn’t seem to lead to dirtier dinnerware, why not let it be? Letting go (bỏ qua) is an important skill (kỹ năng quan trọng)—and you have in this everyday chore (việc vặt hằng ngày) a great opportunity (cơ hội tốt) to practice (thực hành) it.

Hello!

What makes people show up at charity events and donate? Do they just want to promote themselves as virtuous, or are they genuinely altruistic?

—Alexandra

Many factors come into play at charity events. If you attend, you’re signaling that you’re part of a group and committed to its cause. But the social signaling doesn’t stop there. Numerous studies have shown that the more public people’s charitable behavior is, the more they donate. In a 1984 study published in the Journal of Consumer Research, Joel Brockner and his colleagues showed that people were more willing to donate to a charity when they were solicited in person compared with a phone call. So altruism no doubt motivates many donors—but social factors can boost their giving.

Dear Dr. Ariely,

My wife has retired, but I’m still working at age 71, and we live with some difficulty from paycheck to paycheck. I don’t touch the more than $1 million in my retirement fund. Technically, I’m a millionaire, but I don’t behave like one. Should I start thinking of myself as wealthy and act accordingly?

—Norman

Yes, you should. Since I am hoping that you and your wife will live a long life, I am not advising you to go on a spending spree. At the same time, it might be useful for you to think of yourself as having a higher socioeconomic status. A study published in the journal Health Psychology in 2000 by Nancy E. Adler and colleagues showed that subjective socioeconomic status (i.e., where people ranked themselves relative to others) was more predictive of physical health and psychological well-being than actual socioeconomic rank. So while I don’t think that you should start spending like a millionaire, it may help to think of yourself as one.

The bitter divorce (ly dị) battle (cuộc chiến) between billionaire (tỷ phú) bond (trái phiếu) king (vua) Bill Gross and his ex-wife (vợ cũ) is beginning to stink (bốc mùi) — like vomit (nôn mửa), flatulence (đầy hơi; tính tự cao tự đại, rỗng tuếch) and dead fish.

The California moneyman, who lost his beloved 13,819-square-foot Laguna Beach home to his ex-wife in the breakup, used foul-smelling sprays to leave the place a stinking mess — and placed dead fish in the air vents, a “disgusted” Sue Gross claimed in court papers last week.

Mrs. Gross, who won a temporary restraining order against Bill last week, has the evidence of his foul play — empty spray bottles in the trash cans, court papers allege (cáo buộc).

Bill Gross left the home, worth as much as $36 million, “in a state of utter chaos and disrepair,”

The organisms (cơ thể, sinh vật; cơ quan, tổ chức) the body produces to clear toxic (độc) chemicals from alcohol are the same ones it needs to protect the heart from damage, researchers say.

The body produces organisms called enzymes which break down the toxic parts of alcohol when people drink it, and they are the same enzymes which are released to protect the heart when it suffers major damage, such as during a heart attack (cơn đau tim; cơn sốc, sự choáng váng).

So exposing the heart to low levels of alcohol effectively trains the body how to create the enzymes needed to cope with a heart attack.

"Pig iron" nghĩa là gì?

Power can turn you into a pig. Photo courtesy Ralf Steinberger.

'Pig iron' = crude iron as first obtained from a smelting furnace, in the form of oblong blocks -> nghĩa là gang, mẻ kim loại.

Ví dụ
Brazilian pig iron export prices remained unchanged this week, but rumors of shipments being booked at lower prices have started to be heard.

We believe the increased competitiveness may prompt Chinese steelmakers to boost merchant pig iron (MPI) imports in times when local pig iron/hot metal production slows down.

Buyers in the US, the largest global consumer of merchant pig iron, started to restock in mid-May, when scrap prices became clear for May. All cargoes were booked at $405-410 per tonne cfr from CIS and Brazilian suppliers.

Following a month-long market consultation, the European and CIS pig iron prices have been amended to include manganese content in the pig iron. Payment terms and minimum order size have been revised in line with current market conditions.

Sloths (con lười) have one of the most unique (độc đáo) rituals (nghi lễ) when it comes to defecation (đại tiện). Unlike most other animals, the sloths only urinate and release their bowels once a week.

When a sloth does their weekly poo, a lot comes out. Rebecca Cliffe, a sloth biologist at Swansea University, observed the sloths and could see "their stomachs physically shrink" when releasing poop. The animals can lose up to one-third of their body weight during defecation, and the poop can weigh over 2 pounds.

The sloth has to physically climb down from a forest canopy to poop. To start the act of defecation, a sloth initiates a ritual dance that helps with the process. The dancing creates a tiny space in the dirt for the turd (cục phân; người đê tiện, đáng ghét). The sloth can also do a second dance just to get back up the tree.

As the sloth only goes to the bathroom once a week, the turd emerges as a long piece, which scientists say, resembles an old banana. Constipation (táo bón) is a normal part of a sloth's life and consequently, each bowel movement can be as painful as childbirth.

...These animals have a slow metabolism (trao đổi chất; chuyển hóa), and it can take them a month to digest (tiêu hóa) certain types of food.

Professor Andrew Jarosz of Mississippi State University and colleagues served vodka-cranberry cocktails to 20 male subjects until their blood alcohol levels neared legal intoxication and then gave each a series of word association problems to solve. Not only did those who imbibed (uống, nốc, hít; hấp thụ, tiêm nhiễm) give more correct answers than a sober control group performing the same task, but they also arrived at solutions more quickly. The conclusion: drunk people are better at creative problem solving.

"Mutatis mutandis" nghĩa là gì?

mối nguy cho xã hội tự do... Photo courtesy zeitfaenger.at.

'Mutatis mutandis', trong phân tích kinh tế/luật pháp, nghĩa là 'cho phép những thứ khác thay đổi tương ứng' hoặc 'những thay đổi cần thiết đã được thực hiện' ((used when comparing two or more cases or situations) making necessary alterations while not affecting the main point at issue).

Ví dụ
what is true of undergraduate teaching in England is equally true, mutatis mutandis, of American graduate schools.

He argues that “The tech giants are menacing democracy, privacy, and competition” and asks: “Can they be housebroken?” Thus, the successful exponents of Agile are becoming so dominant in the marketplace that they are now emerging as a threat to a free society, in the much same way, mutatis mutandis, that the big industrial companies of the late 19th Century (rail, oil, steel) became a threat to society and had to be broken up the trust-busters like President Theodore Roosevelt.

In the mid-1960s fewer than 10 per cent of Cambridge undergraduates were female. But opening the doors to women didn’t solve the question of inequality; it simply posed it anew. As Helen McCarthy observed in reviewing Malkiel’s book, parity of numbers masks continuing structural inequalities, manifest, for instance, in the lower share of firsts at Oxbridge, and persistent under-representation in student leadership positions. The same analysis applies, mutatis mutandis, to schools. As a recent Economist article made clear, the advantages of boys’ schools going co-ed seem to accrue exclusively to the boys. In fact, boys benefit in direct proportion to the number of girls in a class. For the girls, on the other hand, the educational advantages remain elusive.

Imagine that you sell bread-making machines. Your task is complicated by the fact that most people have only a hazy grasp of what a bread-making machine does, let alone the joys and sorrows of owning one.

Nevertheless, there is a simple trick that will help these machines to fly off your shelves: next to what seems to be a perfectly adequate $150 bread-maker, place a $250 bread-maker with a long list of bewildering extra functions. Customers will think to themselves: “I don’t need all that nonsense. The cheaper, simpler bread maker is the better option.” Some of them will buy it, even though they would not have otherwise.

Itamar Simonson, a marketing professor at Stanford University, attests that the kitchenware company Williams-Sonoma doubled their sales of bread-makers in the early 1990s using this sort of technique. Mr Simonson, along with Amos Tversky, one of the fathers of behavioural economics, demonstrated similar preference reversals in a laboratory setting.

Mr Simonson and Tversky showed that when people are wavering between two options, you can change what they choose by offering a third, unattractive option. A $1,000 camera might seem extravagant unless there’s a $5,000 camera sitting next to it. The grande sized cup at Starbucks seems restrained when put next to the venti, a Brobdingnagian vat of flavoured warm milk.

Teresa Johnson lived in her neighborhood for about 13 years. She's seen burglaries, but nothing quite like this.

"He is riding a John Deere riding lawn mower with a flat tire. How stupid is this guy?" Johnson asked while laughing. Knoxville police said Benny Vaughn broke into Johnson's shed on May 8 to steal the mower; which is worth about $1,800. He then used the John Deere as his getaway car. Johnson's neighbor trailed the suspect several miles down the street around 4 p.m. while taking pictures.

"Ceteris paribus" nghĩa là gì?

sẽ còn giảm sâu... Photo courtesy Richard Patterson.

'Ceteris paribus', trong phân tích kinh tế, nghĩa là 'tất cả những thứ khác bằng nhau' hoặc 'giữ các yếu tố khác không thay đổi' ("all other things being equal" or "other things held constant" or "all else unchanged".)

Ví dụ
In our sensitivity analysis, every US$5/bbl increase in crude oil prices would reduce our earnings forecast by 18.5% for FY18, ceteris paribus.

Most coins are in red again as the recovery momentum proved to be too weak to take prices above critical resistance levels. While no one knows for sure when this bear market hit the bottom, ceteris paribus, we will continue hitting new lows for the foreseeable future. Bitcoin is changing hands at $6,080, down 2.4% on daily basis.

Earnings of a company comprise equity and have a high holding cost. If there are no investment opportunities, why not pay higher dividends? In a ceteris paribus regulatory environment, corporates will retain just sufficient cash for their working capital and short-term investment requirements. Long-term investment capital will be raised when the requirement arises. The balance of earnings will be paid out as dividends, which can then be consumed or invested by the shareholder as he or she sees fit. But we tax companies at 28% of earnings and a further 20% on dividends paid. The incentive to hoard cash for unknown long-term investment requirements lies in the desire to avoid the dividend tax, despite the higher holding cost of equity capital.
