-----

The World Pie Eating Championship has descended into ‘chaos’ after contestants were forced to change their filling to chicken to stop them breaking wind (đánh rắm).

It will be the first time in its 26-year-long history the competition has not used red meat and potatoes over fears the ingredients could cause some unwelcome smells.

The decision was made in the wake of a recent scandal at a darts (phi tiêu) event where a competitor said he was put off by another player’s farts (đánh rắm).

...The 1992 pie-eating champion Dave Smyth said: ‘There is great skill in downing a pie without spillage (sự đổ ra, lượng đổ ra), crumb splatter (rơi lộp độp, bắn tung tóe) or swallow stall – talent developed over many years. ‘Chicken is less demanding and requires a completely different and less-challenging technique from meat and potato. ‘The introduction of chicken means lower-level weekend competitors will be mixing it with the elite group.

...The officer pulled Heinzen over and questioned him about what he was doing in the area, to which Heinzen claimed that he had just turned down the road to turn around because he thought he had left his credit card at home (quên thẻ tín dụng ở nhà).

When questioned further, Heinzen said he was "curious" (tò mò) about masturbating (thủ dâm) in front of the camera (trước camera an ninh) at the water treatment plant (nhà máy xử lý nước) so he drove there, mooned the camera then masturbated while wearing a hat (đội mũ) and napkin around (quấn khăn) his face (quanh mặt), according to the affidavit (bản khai có tuyên thệ).

Heinzen said he did it because he is "dumb" (ngu ngốc, ngớ ngẩn). He was arrested (bắt giữ, bắt giam) on a charge (buộc tội) of indecent exposure (hở hang khiếm nhã).

Shoppers said they were shocked to see the sex film "Dad is f***ing my girlfriend" appear in search results when they browsed the website for an appropriate present for their dad.

Parents fear children could see the 18-rated £16.95 DVD and other sex films on the website as they appear in search results.

The DVD - which was sold by a third-party seller called Meerkat Wholesalers - popped up on screen when you typed "dad gifts" into the search bar.

After The Sun contacted Amazon about the DVD, it removed the title from its website - but other porn films are still listed online.

Chuyện Lữ Mông

theo Tuệ Tâm, hat tip to lê quang hải,
-----

Photo courtesy Alisdare Hickson.

'Temper tantrum' có từ tantrum là cơn thịnh nộ, cơn tam bành -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cơn la hét giận dữ, khóc mếu (của trẻ em); ăn vạ (a tantrum, temper tantrum, meltdown or hissy fit is an emotional outburst, usually associated with children or those in emotional distress, that is typically characterized by stubbornness, crying, screaming, violence, defiance, angry ranting, a resistance to attempts at pacification, and, in some cases, hitting, and ...).

Ví dụ
British people voted as children, with a terrible temper tantrum, for which the price to be paid will be incalculable.

Ignoring a temper tantrum can be very effect way. Eventually the child will realise that this isn't an effective strategy and you can later talk to them.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Republicans shouldn’t allow President Donald Trump to shut down the government because of a “temper tantrum” over demands for more money for his border wall.

In a statement about the special session, the president of the Kentucky Education Association called the move “nothing but a reactionary public temper tantrum from the Commonwealth’s highest elected official,” adding that, “The thousands of dollars it takes to pay for a special session is a waste of the same tax dollars Governor Bevin constantly harps about saving.”

"Right off the bat" nghĩa là gì?

Father and son baseball batting lesson in the Cloisters Park, Morro Bay, CA. Photo courtesy Mike Baird.

'Right off the bat' nghĩa là ngay lập tức.

Ví dụ
I was surprised by that because I don't think we went out everybody charging at Giordano right off the bat.

On that instance, we knew we had a driver that was possibly impaired just by the officer's observations of this individual right off the bat.

Right off the bat, Sacred Heart’s defense turned into quick offense as Nate Tabor led all scores at the half with 12, and Connor Tierney recorded six blocks.

WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle recently did a Q&A on Facebook and commented on a number of interesting topics. Right off the bat, one fan asked him about comparing Daniel Bryan vs. Mustafa Ali on SmackDown to his match against John Cena on the night that he made his main roster debut on SmackDown in 2002. “I believe it had the same feel. The champ (Bryan) gave the new kid (or younger kid) a chance and the new kid stuck with him the entire match. Nothing more exciting than to see a heel champ lose (or almost lose) to the young buck. Great story telling. Both matches had that.”

Organisers of a naked bike ride through Edinburgh hope to have dozens of people baring all next summer. The World Naked Bike Ride is an international "bare as you dare" cycle, calling for cleaner and safer streets.

The Edinburgh event is being organised for June 8 next year, pending approval by the city council. An exact route for the cycle is yet to be determined but dozens of riders are expected in various states of undress.

Previous Edinburgh naked bike rides were forced to stay at least partially clothed due to a warning from the police. However organisers say they are confident riders will be allowed to be fully nude this year, following further discussions with the police. It means next year's could be the largest so far.

"Bat an eye" nghĩa là gì?

great-horned owlet: he was awake, but would doze off from time to time, not at all threatened by me. i was amazed that he let me slip closer and closer to him without batting an eye. Photo courtesy devra.

'Bat an eye' có từ bat là nháy mắt, chớp mắt -> cụm từ này thường được dùng ở thể phủ định để nói là 'không chớp mắt', không nháy mắt, = không thể hiện cảm xúc (sự kinh ngạc, sửng sốt, khiếp đảm; tức giận, buồn bã...); 'không ghê tay'...

Ví dụ
Most of the time businesses don't bat an eye, but on that day, Read got into a heated argument with Tim Hortons' employees over Joey.

When asked about that future – and a potential world title in Japan in March – the two didn’t bat an eye. “It’s too expensive not to go for gold,” Donohue offered, followed by Hubbell: “We were silver last year so why wouldn’t we reach a little higher and go for gold?”

So our hypothetical (có tính cách giả thuyết) utopian (người đề ra/ủng hộ chính sách thiếu thực tế; không tưởng) folks wouldn’t bat an eye at two men sharing a kiss, but would likely get pretty pissed if someone came around advocating the use of tear gas against people in need, or death for sick people who don’t have the money to pay for treatment, or killing machines for everybody—all of which are mainstream (dòng chính, chủ lưu) conservative (bảo thủ) points of view (quan điểm, lập trường).

It was flamboyant (hoa mỹ, khoa trương, cường điệu) and deliciously gaudy (lòe loẹt, hoa hòe hoa sói; cầu kỳ, hoa mỹ), with Bollywood glitterati arriving decked in bejeweled saris; at one event, the famously fashionable groom sported a sparkling cat on one shoulder of his kurta, or long tunic (áo dài thắt ngang lưng). The western media barely bat an eye. Two Bollywood stars getting married, after all, wasn’t a big deal, no matter the fact that they had the pocketbooks and loyalty of about a billion people.

A Paris hospital which made a public appeal (kêu gọi công chúng) for stool samples (mẫu phân/cứt) for a study (nghiên cứu) on intestinal diseases (bệnh đường ruột) said Friday it had suspended the project after being inundated (ngập lụt, ngập tràn) by donors hoping for an easy 50 euros.

"Someone took a picture and it spread rapidly on the internet and social media, because the message had been altered: People thought it meant: Give us your stools, we'll give you 50 euros," Sokol said.

In fact the rigorous (nghiêm khắc, nghiêm ngặt, khắt khe) selection (lựa chọn, tuyển chọn) progress (quy trình) for the study, on a potential treatment for intestinal inflammation (sưng, viêm), involved a series of blood and stool tests as well as an extensive interview (phỏng vấn sâu) on a donor's medical history (lịch sử bệnh tật, hồ sơ bệnh án). Doctors worldwide are studying fecal (thuộc về phân) transplants (cấy, ghép), which aim to treat a range of chronic (mạn tính) gut (ruột) diseases by introducing stool bacteria from a healthy person into affected patients to help replenish (lại làm đầy, cung cấp, bổ sung) a normal bacterial balance...

"Take a telling-off" nghĩa là gì?

Neverland reprimand. Photo courtesy greyloch.

'Take a telling-off' nghĩa là bị rầy la, mắng nhiếc vì làm gì sai.

Ví dụ
The CV also boasts that the youngster’s other qualities include being able to ‘handle defeat’ and take a telling-off from a teacher without sulking (hờn dỗi, sưng sỉa).

He’d huff and puff but when he knew he was in the wrong he’d take a telling off well. He was noted as unadoptable but he was turning into a wonderful young man.

Football is getting soft and a lot of players can’t take a telling-off because they’re on fortunes. There are true pros who are a credit to the game but a lot aren’t.

In the real world, though, even serial cereal lovers will surely gag at the concept of drinkable Weetabix, a concept that ranks somewhere between fizzy Marmite and corned beef slurry on the scale of liquefied desirability. Frankly, we’d rather take a telling-off from our boss.

"Screw your courage to the sticking place" nghĩa là gì?

hết sức can đảm đi giày cao gót dự hội sách... Photo courtesy ActuaLitté.

'Screw your courage to the sticking place' nghĩa là quyết tâm, cương quyết, kiên quyết; kiên định, vững vàng, không chùn bước; đây là một câu trong Macbeth của Shakespeare, năm 1605.

Ví dụ
With some 62 book-related events loaded into a single 10-hour day, Portland Book Festival is an unparalleled opportunity, even for those of us who don’t like to leave our couches, teapots and teetering stacks of books. So gird your loins and screw your courage to the sticking place, my friends—you still have a few days to prepare. And prepare you must!

After Lady Macbeth advised her husband to “screw your courage to the sticking-place” in Act I, the guilt of murdering King Duncan in Shakespeare’s “Scottish Play” drives her to pace the halls of her castle in her sleep, uttering her most famous soliloquy. “Wash your hands. Put on your nightgown. Look not so pale. — I tell you yet again, Banquo’s buried; he cannot come out on ’s grave.”

Just as you were minding your own business, your phone pings automatically with a notification that you've been added to some random group. You're now part of neighbourhood watch, a high school group and disturbingly (in my case) a "Chinese Friends" group. It makes for the stuff of eye-rolls and deep sighs. And just like in real life some characters make you grateful for mute buttons and others ultimately push you to screw your courage to the sticking-place, and be that person who "has left the group".

Millennials in China Are Using Nudes to Secure Loans

Money lenders offering services like Afterpay are demanding that customers send naked selfies as collateral.

Microloan systems (hệ thống cho vay vi mô) have revolutionised (cách mạng hóa) the way we shop (cách thức chúng ta mua hàng). Desperate for the latest, very slightly updated iPhone? Sign up for a month-to-month plan and break that price tag down into manageable morsels (khẩu phần nhỏ). Always wanted a jacuzzi but too cash poor to front up for it? Sign up to Afterpay and for a series of $10 monthly instalments you could have that tub paid off in 60 years.

It’s the way of the future, and Chinese millennials are diving in headfirst (lao đầu vào). They’re not just using their microloan accounts to buy big ticket items like TVs and Teslas, either—some fintech companies are also letting people pay for small daily purchases like burgers or biscuits on a long-term, monthly instalment basis.

In a country where cost of living is high and the chances of getting a credit card are relatively low, this new form of e-commerce has opened up a world of possibilities for a whole lot of Chinese millennials. Because it’s 2018, though, there’s also a dark side to the system. Sure, you can get a 475 gram box of Oreos and pay it back in monthly instalments of 41 cents over three years, or go jetski-shopping with peanuts to your name. But first you might have to send some nudes.

'Rubber jungle' = rừng cao su -> là thuật ngữ trong ngành hàng không, phi công và tiếp viên nói với nhau, khi mặt nạ dưỡng khí bung ra trong khoang máy bay.

Ví dụ
Unconscious (bất tỉnh, ngất; không biết, không ý thức) pilots (phi công) and passengers (hành khách), a rubber jungle of oxygen masks and a plane unresponsive to all communication: That was the horror sight that greeted two fighter pilots who flew close to a Boeing passenger jet on a summer morning in 2005.

Like vines flanking a path through a jungle, oxygen masks hung from rows of tubes on Jet Airways flight 9W 697 this morning, and an improbable (không chắc sẽ xảy ra, đâu đâu) nightmare (cơn ác mộng) inspired by pre-flight safety briefings (hướng dẫn ngắn) came true. The root cause, sources say, was an error by the crew; they forgot to activate a "bleed" switch, causing a drop (giảm) in cabin pressure (áp suất) inside the Boeing 737-800 plane. A rubber jungle of bags, tubes and masks descended. Around 30 passengers bled (chảy máu) from their ears (tai) and noses (mũi).

"Hammer and tongs" nghĩa là gì?

'Hammer and tongs' nghĩa là tràn đầy năng lượng, hết sức nhiệt tình; dốc hết sức lực, với tất cả sức mạnh; dữ dội.

Ví dụ
Hashing power is a hammer and tongs approach, whereas a smart combination of AI and blockchain would see far more efficient code-breaking.

WE KNOW SOME PEOPLE REALLY LIKE FORTNITE, but going hammer and tongs over a sexed-up takes on Epic Games' cartoonish characters is arguably pretty niche.

The Congress had gone hammer and tongs after the BJP holding the party and its government led by Vasundhara Raje responsible for the alleged suicides of more than 250 farmers in the state.

Football is often described as being a cruel game and so it proved when we were robbed of at least a point by two glaring errors from Basque referee Gorostegui Fernandez. His first howler came on seven minutes with both teams going at it hammer and tongs. Good work down the right by Fran Gamez saw Raillo head in a beauty, which was chalked off for alleged offside. There was absolutely no way offside (việt vị) came into the equation and the goal (bàn thắng) was totally legitimate (hoàn toàn chính đáng).

"Talk to the hand" nghĩa là gì?

Empty Headed Conversation, Havana, Cuba. Photo courtesy Gareth Williams.

'Talk to the hand' = nói chuyện với bàn tay -> là lời nói chen ngang, thô lỗ để ngắt lời và gạt bỏ điều ai đang nói (đôi khi dài hơn là "talk to the hand, because the face isn't listening," hay tương tự; 'nói chuyện với bàn tay, vì cái mặt có nghe đâu); như 'nói chuyện với cái đầu gối/bịch bông'.

Ví dụ
Forget "talk to the hand;" in 2019, we're crawling away from unwanted conversations.

"Gossip Girl" star Michelle Trachtenberg and "90210" chick AnnaLynne McCord talked to the hand at the same event in Hollywood on Thursday.

She accessorised her swimwear with a playful straw floppy hat, that included the phrase 'talk to the hand' embroidered around the rim, and an over-sized pair of shades.

Vituperative backchat had probably been invented at cocktail parties by this point, but little of it had made its way into mass-market romantic song. If anyone talked to the hand, no one really mentioned it back then.

…the business world has been increasingly aware of the genre's potential. In 2017, PricewaterhouseCoopers, the professional services firm that advises 440 of the Fortune 500 companies, published a blueprint for using science fiction to explore business innovation. The same year, the Harvard Business Review argued that "business leaders need to read more science fiction" in order to stay ahead of the curve…

A number of companies, along with a loose constellation of designers, marketers, and consultants, have formed to expedite the messy creative visualization process that used to take decades. For a fee, they'll prototype a possible future for a [corporate] client, replete with characters who live in it, at as deep a level as a company can afford. They aim to do what science fiction has always done — build rich speculative worlds, describe that world's bounty and perils, and, finally, envision how that future might fall to pieces.

Alternatively referred to as sci-fi prototyping, futurecasting, or worldbuilding, the goal of these companies is generally the same: help clients create forward-looking fiction to generate ideas and IP for progress or profit. Each of the biggest practitioners believe they have their own formulas for helping clients negotiate the future. And corporations like Ford, Nike, Intel, and Hershey's, it turns out, are willing to pay hefty sums for their own in-house Minority Reports.

Women across the globe have been putting wasp nests (tổ ong vò vẽ) in their genitals (bộ phận sinh dục ngoài) apparently (dường như, có vẻ như) to either tighten (làm khít, thắt chặt) and rejuvenate (làm trẻ/khỏe lại, trẻ hóa) their cooters but now a gynecologist has warned against the practice.

- Jen Gunter warned using grounded wasp nest dries the vagina exposing it to harm
- She also said drying (làm khô) the vaginal mucosa (niêm mạc, màng nhầy) increases the risk of abrasions (trầy da, sự mài mòn) during sex (khi làm tình)
- It also destroys (phá hủy, làm cho sụp đổ; làm hỏng, làm hư) the protective mucous layer (màng nhầy bảo vệ)
- Gunter adviced women to avoid anything that causes a burning sensation when applied on the cooter

'The apple of someone's eye' nghĩa là người được yêu mến/yêu quý, đánh giá cao, yêu chuộng, coi trọng.

Ví dụ
Taiwanese movie You Are The Apple Of My Eye, starring Kai Ko and Michelle Chen as school sweethearts, now has a Japanese remake.

Shatrughan Sinha has always called his daughter Sonakshi Sinha the 'apple of my eye' and that says it all about their strong bond.

I didn’t know then, as a child, that the phrase "apple of my eye" refers to something or someone that one cherishes above all others. It appears in the Bible on at least four occasions.
“Keep me as the apple of the eye; Hide me in the shadow of Your wings” (Psalm 17:8).
“For… he who touches you, touches the apple of His eye’” (Zechariah 2:8).
“He guarded him as the pupil of His eye” (Deuteronomy 32:10).
“Keep…my teaching as the apple of your eye” (Proverbs 7:2).

'Pull an all-nighter' nghĩa là thức (trắng) đêm, để học bài hoặc để làm trọn vẹn/hoàn thành việc gì.

Ví dụ
Montreal métro will pull an all-nighter for New Year's Eve.

I'm not quite sure I love it enough to, say, pull an all-nighter on Black Friday in the name of scoring some of the best deals.

It was a party we looked forward to all year — an excuse to pull an all-nighter outside when normally we’d be under curfew in the dorms, followed by the reward of towers of pancakes as night turned into morning.

Don’t actually pull an all-nighter: If you have to teach yourself six chapters of anatomy, it’s tempting to stay up all night in order to do so. But, according to this study from ScienceDaily, your brain actually loses efficiency with each hour of sleep deprivation (thiếu ngủ). The study recommends studying in small 20-30 minute increments multiple times per day a few days before your test.
