"Without a trace of irony" nghĩa là gì?

“I am the chosen one.” Photo couresy Gage Skidmore

"Without a trace of irony" = không có dấu vết của sự mỉa mai, châm biếm -> không có ý mỉa mai, công kích ai.

Ví dụ
Without a trace of irony, John McDonnell said we should abide (chấp nhận) by democratic rules (quy tắc dân chủ).

Talking to reporters on the White House lawn later in the day, Trump — seemingly without a trace of irony — turned his face to the sun and declared (tuyên bố), “I am the chosen one.”

Destiny (Constance Wu) is a struggling single mother. Ramona (Jennifer Lopez), the originator (khởi xướng) of the criminal plan, is a pole-dancing star (vũ công múa cột) who seems to have everything. She takes Destiny under her wing (chở che) (almost literally), saying without a trace of irony, "I guess I'm just a people person."

"Get your money's worth" nghĩa là gì?

"Get one’s money’s worth" có nghĩa là dùng tiền một cách xứng đáng, làm điều đáng với giá trị bạn bỏ ra.

Ví dụ
And a bride wore £1,000 dress in the sea and to play in the sand with her family because she wants to get her money’s worth.

The brand's Brightening Eye Serum ($20, originally $40, ulta.com) is an easy Add To Cart (cho vào giỏ hàng) at its reduced price of $20, and since it can be used both day and night, you'll definitely be getting your money's worth.

And with Apple Arcade launching on September 19, you may be doing a lot of gaming. The 256GB size makes sure you have plenty of room to download those awesome new games and get your money's worth out of that $5 a month subscription (mỗi tháng).

"Not know first thing about" nghĩa là gì?

Hừm, đọc mãi chả hiểu gì. Photo by bruce mars from Pexels

"Not know first thing about (someone/ something) = không biết tí gì về người này/ điều này.

Ví dụ
There is no man in Mauretania worthy of her and because I do not know the first thing about matchmaking (mai mối), I reply to Julia's letter and ask her advice.

By the end of the dialogue, it becomes clear that Sisyphus does not know the first thing about deliberating (cân nhắc cẩn thận), and Socrates offers to delve into (đào sâu nghiên cứu) it again with him.

Now I do have a little background in building with the Army Corps of Engineers (tập đoàn Kỹ sư Quân đội), so I was not totally in the dark. But I was never a handyman (cần cù) type of person and did not know the first thing about most of the basic working components in a home.

"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" nghĩa là gì?

"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" = Đây là bước đi nhỏ bé của con người, nhưng là bước tiến khổng lồ của nhân loại -> Một sự đột phá hoặc bước tiến của nhân loại. Đây là câu nói nổi tiếng của phi hành gia Neil Armstrong vào năm 1969 khi là người đầu tiên đặt chân lên mặt trăng.

Ví dụ
At 10:56 p.m. ET on July 20, 1969, the American astronaut Neil Armstrong put his left foot on the lunar surface and famously declared (tuyên bố, khẳng định), “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Neil Armstrong is supposed to have said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” When he first landed on the moon. But this line became controversial (gây bàn cãi) as the article ‘a’ was missing before the word ‘man’ which allegedly (được cho là) upset NASA.

This is all part of the never-ending evolution (cách mạng) of communication technology. I can still recall in vivid detail that day in November of 1964 when our family moved into our new home in Southfield. The first thing I did was call my older brother. “Hal, you are not going to believe this. I just called you on a phone that has push buttons instead of a rotary dial (điện thoại quay số)!” I believe my next words were: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

"One man's loss is another man's gain" nghĩa là gì?

"One man's loss is another man's gain" mất mát của người này là cái được của người khác.

Ví dụ
As they say, one man's loss is another man's gain, and it seems Aston Villa walked away winners in this one, even if they paid £22.5m to do so.

But one man’s loss is another man’s gain, or in this case, two people’s gain, namely Djokovic’s two biggest competitors (đối thủ) in the current and historical standings.

It’s never fun betting against someone’s health or success, but everything here points toward the under-4000 and under-25.5 lines looking like excellent, winning plays. All the better if you can find any overs for Nick Mullens to go along with them. Either way, one man’s loss is another man’s gain. It’s time to make some money.

"No man is an island" nghĩa là gì?

"No man is an island" = Không ai là một hòn đảo -> Mọi người cần có nhau để sống và tồn tại.

Ví dụ
No man is an island entire of itself; every man. is a piece of the continent (lục địa), a part of the main;. if a clod (đất đai) be washed away by the sea, Europe.

You can assume this discussion is totally, totally unimportant. Maybe it seems that way at first impulse (sự thúc đẩy), but, as has been expressed, no man is an island – we are all connected and we ought to act connected. Or would you rather imagine you are a U.S. senator and you’re meeting another senator of the opposite party and turn your head the other way so somebody doesn’t accuse you of smiling to the opposition – a traitor (kẻ phản bội) to your party?

Future-thinking leaders must also skilfully lead by being both confident and humble. While they should acknowledge that no man is an island (and they can’t achieve success on their own), they need to be able to inspire others to have confidence in them and their abilities. It may sound impossible to be both humble and confident at the same time, but in practice these two mindsets are quite complementary (bổ sung, bổ trợ lẫn nhau). Confidence is what prevents humility (sự khiêm nhường) from slipping into insecurity, and humility prevents confidence from becoming arrogance (sự kiêu ngạo).

"Never send a boy to do a man's job" nghĩa là gì?

"Never send a boy to do a man's job" = Không bao giờ để một cậu nhóc làm việc của một người đàn ông -> Tránh giao những công việc khó cho những người không có kinh nghiệm nếu không thì họ sẽ không thể hoàn thành những công việc đó được.

Ví dụ
Not up to the task. Never send a boy to do a man's job. But when he looked back, Mike wasn't even paying attention. He carried on into the van (xe tải).

Never send a boy to do a man's job. It doesn't work out well. Especially when you're trying to save the world. In space. On a fallible (có thể sai lệch) ship when the shields (cái khiên; tấm chắn bảo vệ; che đậy, lấp liếm) are failing.

The phrase "Never send a boy to do a man's job" often comes to mind when a computer story hits the mainstream news. The idiom refers to neither age nor gender, it simply means, don't send someone unqualified (không đủ trình độ, khả năng) to do a job they will inevitably (không tránh được) fail at.

"Lotus eater" nghĩa là gì?

Peaceful Garden, Ubud, Indonesia. Photo by Sarah Ball on Unsplash.

'Lotus eater' có từ lotus là hoa sen; trong thần thoại hy lạp nhắc tới một chủng người sống trên một hòn đảo toàn hoa sen, hoa sen là thức ăn chính và là thuốc mê/ma túy khiến người dân trên đảo ngủ "yên bình" quên hết sự đời -> từ 'lotus eater' nghĩa là kẻ hưởng lạc, kẻ thích nhàn hạ.

Ví dụ
These are the plants of "lotus-eater" fame, the New World version of the lotus eaten by the sailors (thủy thủ) in Homer's Odyssey. Clearly, the sight of so many arrayed on the riverbank (bờ sông) cast the same spell (làm say mê) halfway across the globe and nearly three thousand years ago.

Mohan Bhagwat must have been a fan of popular Indian TV serial Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne in his youth. Like Rahguvir Yadav's character in that serial about a lotus eater who works up lovely fantasies (hình ảnh tưởng tượng, ý nghĩ kỳ quặc) in his reverie (sự mơ màng/mơ mộng, ảo tưởng/mộng tưởng), the RSS chief too has perfected the art of seeing beautiful dreams.

Immersing (nhúng, nhận chìm, ngâm; đắm chìm vào, ngập vào, mải mê vào) oneself in mind-blowing (làm cho mê mẩn sững sờ; gây ảo giác) art  (nghệ thuật) and design (thiết kế) can also make it all too easy to forget that you are, in fact, supposed to adopt a lotus-eater’s lifestyle. But if you wish to do more than soak in the aquamarine (màu ngọc xanh biển) ocean, sun by the poolside or fall into a transcendental (tiên nghiệm, không dựa trên thực nghiệm; mơ hồ, trừu tượng, huyền ảo) state of bliss (hạnh phúc, niềm vui sướng nhất) at the stunning ESPA-managed spa (home to a grey and white marble (đá hoa cương) hammam (nhà tắm hơi) that is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen), rest assured the Joali also provides for those who like to be physically or intellectually diverted (làm giải trí, làm tiêu khiển, làm vui).

"Man the barricades" nghĩa là gì?

"Man the barricades" = Làm vật chướng ngại -> Tham gia một cuộc biểu tình/chống đối một nhóm, tổ chức hoặc chính phủ.

Ví dụ
The same GOP that has remade itself into being Trump's human shields (tấm chắn bảo vệ, cái khiên) will also man the barricades on behalf of Kavanaugh.

But by Thursday evening they were having to man the barricades at a friend's apartment in Orihuela while the violent storm raged (nổi xung) overhead.

If you win adherents (môn đồ) from another religion, you provoke (xúi giục) that community to erect (dựng nên) defensive walls (bức tường phòng thủ) and man the barricades. So will you.

"Man of the match" nghĩa là gì?

"Man of the match" = Người đàn ông của trận đấu -> Cầu thủ xuất sắc nhất trong một trận đấu thể thao như trong bóng đá hoặc cricket.

Ví dụ
Dublin's Ciaran Kilkenny has been named as man-of-the-match in today's All-Ireland final, with his county making history by claiming a fifth consecutive (nối tiếp) Sam Maguire.

Dublin's Ciarán Kilkenny has won the All-Ireland SFC final Man of the Match award. RTE's Saturday Game panel voted for the Dublin star who has been in stellar (xuất sắc) form all year and capped (ngã mũ, làm tốt hơn) it by lifting the Sam Maguire following the Sky Blues' final replay win over Kerry.

Whether you surged up the table or stagnated (đình trệ) in mediocrity (tính chất thường), you should not have been left without inspiration to go again next time after last weekend's bumper (người va mạnh, người va cản) weekend of action. With all that in mind, let's look at the man of the match lowdown (sự thật) from week five.

"Man of parts" nghĩa là gì?

"Man of parts" = Người đàn ông có nhiều tài năng.

Ví dụ
Kenner was a man of parts, and the parts were always coherent (liên kết, mạch lạc), the result of an enviable (đầy ghen tỵ) combination of intelligence and passion.

Michael Wilson was a man of parts. The resumé of the former federal finance minister, who died this weekend at 81, overflowed with power-broker credentials (thư ủy nhiệm) and Establishment laurels (vinh quang, vòng nguyệt quế) .

Eric Low, 51, a man of parts, is also carrying on the family business, The Moped Co. (748 Kapahulu Ave., (808) 735-8887), which started out on Dillingham Boulevard in 1985. “We used to be the moped place in Honolulu,” says Low. Now they just sell parts, thanks to next-door Mopeds Direct, which began as a moped rental and sales operation franchised (đặc quyền kinh doanh) from the Lows. “It changed hands and we lost the franchise, but there’s no competition. We have a mature business and a pretty good landlord (chủ nhà).”

"Man of action" nghĩa là gì?

"Man of action" = Người của hành động -> Người thiên về hành động hơn là chỉ lời nói suông.

Ví dụ
Knight said Baugh was genteel (quý phái, thượng lưu), as “He seemed so quiet, almost passive, and yet he was a man of action”.

2019 has featured the veteran man of action slipping into different antagonist disguises (cải trang các nhân vật phản diện) in films such as Donnybrook and Into the Ashes.

President Donald Trump likes to talk a tough game — saddling his rivals (người cạnh tranh, đối thủ) with mocking (chế giễu, nhạo báng) nicknames, promising unrivaled destruction to those who cross him — but when it comes to follow through, he is not a man of action.

"Go down in flames" nghĩa là gì?

"Go down in flames" = Rớt cháy xuống -> Tuột dốc/thất bại một cách mạnh mẽ.

Ví dụ
Kacey Musgraves isn't afraid to go "down in flames" for being true to herself (thật lòng với bản thân).

A largescale effigy (hình nộm) will go down in flames at the conclusion of events, along with the fire dancers and fire acts you'll be in awe of (kính phục).

Speaking on C-SPAN’s “After Words” on Saturday, Media Research Center (MRC) President Brent Bozell said CNN and MSNBC would “rather go down in flames” than “balance out” their network coverage (việc đưa tin).

"Badger (someone or something) to death" = Phiền chết đi được -> Quấy rầy, gây phiền hà cho ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
It's worth noting that Holzman's cause of death has not yet been disclosed. ... “Katy Perry badgered a nun (nữ tu sĩ, bà xơ) ...to death,” someone similarly wrote.

“We were constantly being badgered to death, constantly having to worry about ... And it was like 'how can somebody be living in this house illegally?

He would badger me to death when I said I didn't remember XYZ, and get really upset. He really didn't seem to understand that when I said I didn't know.

"Snake along" nghĩa là gì?

Chuồn lẹ thôi! Photo by Pravin Bagde on Unsplash

"Snake along" là cụm từ chỉ hành động di chuyển theo đường ngoằn ngoèo giống như một con rắn.

Ví dụ
The Conway Yards, which snake along the Ohio River in Freedom and Conway, is one of the largest rail yards in the country.

But when Holliday studied these skull (hộp sọ) spaces in dinosaurs (khủng long), alligators (cá sấu), and other animals, the old explanation didn’t add up. For one, if the space anchored (giữ chặt) T. rex (viết tắt của từ: Tyrannosaurus rex, tên một loài khủng long) jaw (quai hàm) muscles, the muscle would have had to come up from the jaw, take a 90-degree turn, and then snake along the roof of the skull.

Freake was enthusiastic about his Maritime Race Weekend experience: “The atmosphere around the weekend… is high energy, community-driven and super-inclusive. From having Celtic dancers, folk music playing the whole time, to the pirates jamboree party after the race. It was an unreal experience! The courses snake along the scenic Eastern Passage coastline and the kilometres just fly by as you find yourself admiring the beauty during the race. I was elated to be able to grab the win in both the 5K and half-marathon…”

"Come close to blows" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Jyotirmoy Gupta on Unsplash

"Come close to blows" có từ blow là cú đánh đòn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là suýt nữa thì lao vào đánh nhau/dùng vũ lực với nhau.

Ví dụ
Walters went on to give a detailed (chi tiết) account of an incident (vụ việc) in Keane’s office at Ipswich which had seen them come close to blows after the striker had demanded (yêu cầu) to leave the club.

The battle of the thermostat (máy chỉnh nhiệt) is heating up. You may have come close to blows with someone in your house over where to set the temperature. The federal Energy Star program recently put out some new recommendations, and not everyone is staying cool-headed (giữ cái đầu lạnh) about it.

The pair had come close to blows in both of the previous two games between the teams, but they were separated (tách rời) by linesmen each time, once as Wilson threw up his gloves (găng tay) theatrically (điệu bộ). With three games in two weeks between the teams, the duel had a sense of inevitability (không thể tránh được).

"Monkey suit' nghĩa là gì?

Sắp đến giờ hẹn rồi, hồi hộp quá! Photo by Javier Reyes on Unsplash

"Monkey suit" (bộ vét-tông của con khỉ) là tiếng lóng, ý chỉ một bộ đồng phục hoặc tuxedo (loại quần áo khổ lớn, thường được xem là lễ phục cho các bữa tiệc chiều). Người ta mặc "monkey suit" khi họ muốn xuất hiện một cách trang trọng. Đôi khi, "monkey suit" cũng dùng để chỉ quần áo mặc cho các con khỉ của người hát rong.

Ví dụ
Hartlepool Borough Council which has been taken over by The Brexit Party is known for its rather idiosyncratic (phong cách riêng) electoral (thuộc bầu cử) tastes (sự ưa thích/thị hiếu). Not only did it elect (quyết định/bầu) a man in a monkey suit as its mayor (thị trưởng) and three times it elected Peter Mandelson as its MP.

Art shared afterward (sau đó) that within minutes of arriving at the country club he experienced difficulty with the monkey suit he rarely wears. He wishes he’d more thoroughly thanked the couple of strangers who watched his dress-up slacks (=trousers/pants) fall to his ankles (mắt cá chân) and valiantly (dũng cảm) hiked (kéo lên) them back up.

For this new contest, our main inspiration (cảm hứng) is the long-running New York Times Magazine Lives column. Like that feature, which ran from 1996 to 2017, and included essays on everything from eating ramen to experiencing an emergency plane landing (hạ cánh khẩn cấp) to wearing a monkey suit to work, we’re looking for “short, powerful stories about meaningful life experiences.”

"Rub me up the wrong way" nghĩa là gì?

Chị hơi bánh bèo nhưng đừng trêu chị nha Photo by Pixabay on Pexels

'Rub one up the wrong way' từ này bắt nguồn từ hình ảnh chải lông (rub) cho mèo, thường không ai chải ngược lại chiều lông mọc -> làm ai khó chịu, chọc tức ai; làm trái ý ai.

Ví dụ
“Maybe I just haven’t found the right therapist yet,” he concedes (thừa nhận), “but I seem to end up finding people who rub me up the wrong way and give me advice that I disagree with. As if I know better…”

Talking to OfficialCharts.com, the singer admitted that it’s one of her favourite songs to perform live because of its “sassy” lyrics. “Mirror Man shows a side of my character that I don’t often get to show – it doesn’t need to come out unless you rub me up the wrong way! This person obviously did,” she said.

While it will forever rub me up the wrong way to have actors that are not South African in the lead roles of local films, I am prepared to concede that Muller’s portrayal of Fischer was quite stellar (xuất sắc). It also helps that he was flanked by a talented cast of local actors and actresses namely Antoinette Louw who played his wife Molly, and Sello Motloung who played Mandela.

"Read the room" nghĩa là gì?

Đang họp hành căng thẳng, nghiêm túc Photo by Christina Morillo on Pexels

'Read the room' = dùng trực giác để phán đoán tâm trạng trung của mọi người trong một nơi/địa điểm nào đó để có cách cư xử và hành động phù hợp, một kiểu 'lựa tình thế mà cư xử'.

Ví dụ
Reading the room is a golden skill (kĩ năng), and it’s even more important in an emerging industry like cannabis. For David, reading the room meant knowing that the industry had matured to the point where others were well-positioned to carry on the work that he started.

“I’m experienced enough in meetings that I’m calm (bình tĩnh) and I’m able to communicate effectively,” she said. “I have what I consider to be emotional intelligence in that I can read the room. I think I’d be a good fit to bring the board together and try to find consensus on issues.”

People subconsciously (theo tiềm thức) read the room long before anything is spoken. Employees have a gut feeling that they are about to get reamed out before it happens. Going in with the intention of keeping the situation calm and positive, will not only calm your own nerves, but create an atmosphere where the employee can relax, and the two of you can work together.

"Read you loud and clear" nghĩa là gì?

Em nghe đây anh ơi Photo by mentatdgt from Pexels

'Read one loud and clear' = nghe thấy (nghe hiểu) bạn to và rõ (qua điện thoại hoặc radio) -> hiểu đúng ý người khác muốn gì.

Ví dụ
The supplier, Integrated Wireless Technologies, had the loaner equipment online as of about 2 p.m. That’s when a test transmission went out from “Radio Repair” to Riverhead Police headquarters, which responded, “We read you loud and clear.”

In the second episode, Kate even tells us herself: “It’s always going to be about the weight for me … It’s at the core of who I am.” We read you loud and clear, writers. Metz does wonderful things with the material she’s given, but Kate Pearson is a fat woman, and that’s really all she has time to be.

I read you loud and clear. Worrying often does nothing but add stress to already volatile (không ổn định, hay thay đổi) and difficult situations. I think teams know when they are in highly-problematic situations and to see their leader lose faith — or even become totally unglued — does nothing except throw more fuel on the fire.

Given that ambition (mong muốn), George H. W. Bush’s promise was an irresistible (không chống lại được) challenge. “Read my lips,” he said. OK. We read you loud and clear. And if we can browbeat (hăm dọa) you into capitulating, even as a “last resort,” to our demand that you raise taxes, then we’ll have you by the short and curlies. We’ll play that video where you made the promise on an endless loop on the lead up to the 1992 election and crush you.

"Softly, softly, catchee monkey" nghĩa là gì?

Ngồi cẩn thận con nhé! Photo by Ramon Vloon on Unsplash

"Softly, softly, catchee monkey" có nghĩa là một cách chậm rãi và cẩn thận để đối phó với một con người đáng ngờ hoặc giải quyết một vấn đề đầy khó khăn/thách thức.

Ví dụ
Creative director at BPL, Andy Mackenzie, describes the agency’s approach (cách/phương pháp tiếp cận) to the redesign as “softly, softly, catchee monkey”.

After experiencing the railway for herself, Victoria gives her permission and agrees that Albert can share some of her duties while she is pregnant (mang thai), but tells him: “Softly, softly, catchy monkey”.

The formula (công thức) of softly, softly catchee monkey that Mr. Alf Ramsey, Ipswich’s manager – and now England’s – imposed (áp đặt) on his individually far from extraordinary (lạ thường, khác thường) team last season was not to be seen anywhere, although its ghost seemed to be flittering (phất phơ, bay qua bay lại) about when Ipswich scored their goal.
