"Canary in a coal mine" nghĩa là gì?

Trên công trường khai thác Photo by Tom Fisk from Pexels

'Canary in a coal mine' = chim hoàng yến trong mỏ than.

Two employment data points also reported last week may have offered a hint (dấu hiệu) of as much. So, the developing recession (suy thoái) in manufacturing may prove to be like a canary in a coal mine, forewarning of danger to the broader economy.

As a sexual outsider (người ngoài cuộc) on the margins of what's publicly acceptable, Furman is our canary in a coal mine. She may be among the first to suffer, but she sings out a warning and a call for action. "Time to do justice for the poor," she sings on "Evening Prayer aka Justice". The specifics of what is needed are not clear. This album is a rallying cry, not a prescription for the future.

Hospital emergency rooms (phòng cấp cứu bệnh viện) (ERs) are the health system’s equivalent of the proverbial canary in a coal mine. If something is amiss (không ổn) in the health system, it manifests (thể hiện, hiển hiện) first in the ER, typically with patients waiting forever for treatment or, if they require admission to the hospital, staying far too long in the ER waiting for a hospital bed.

"Just goes to show" nghĩa là chứng minh, chỉ ra (sự thật, ý nghĩa ẩn sau...). "It just goes to show you something" nghĩa là một câu chuyện/ tình huống đó đưa ra một thông điệp ý nghĩa nhất định.

Ví dụ
Unbelievable. Well, it just goes to show: You spend your whole life looking for somebody, and then you get a contract (bản hợp đồng) that you have to find a groom within a year.

This past game was almost a coming out party, he threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns (chạm bóng). Just goes to show his stint (sự hạn chế cố gắng, sự không làm hết sức mình) a couple of years ago had more to do with his surrounding cast then him.

Sean said Brenden went to swimming holes all of the time, but he believes what happened on Saturday was just an unfortunate accident (tai nạn đáng tiếc). "He enjoyed it. He was good at it. It just goes to show accidents can happen at any time," Sean said.

"Prim and proper" nghĩa là gì?

Đẹp trai mới có nhiều đứa yêu. Photo by: Mubariz Mehdizadeh on Unsplash

"Prim and proper" có từ prim là nghiêm nghị, đứng đắn -> cụm từ này chỉ người luôn luôn hành xử đúng mực và không bao giờ phá bỏ quy tắc lịch sự.

Ví dụ
She said before going to the delivery room; she was running her personal errands (việc lặt vặt) so that everything is prim and proper. She said that she had a desperate craving (khao khát) for McGriddle from McDonald’s. She also remembers asking Jonathan to take her for a bikini wax:” Do you mind driving me to get a Bikini Wax?”

Expect prim and proper black leather (da) boots or derbies for the feet, along with three-quarter length wool coats. Business stripes are back in fashion, but this time given a casual feel, and – unusually – some new fabrics (vật liệu) also make their winter debut, including stonewashed denim (vải bò).

Fast forward to a TV interview in 1967 and she’s a prim and proper young lady with rounder vowels (nguyên âm) and a little less spirit, packaged for entertainment shows by BBC legend Bill Cotton. Marie has disappeared.

"Back to the salt mines" nghĩa là gì?

Bà con diêm dân vô cùng vất vả để làm ra được hạt muối trắng tinh Photo by Quang Nguyen Vinh from Pexels

'Back to the salt mines' = quay lại cánh đồng muối.

“After several days of parole (tạm tha), pablum, and paralysis, all of which, when loosely translated, simply means expending the balance of one’s annual leave, the honest admission here is that sometimes it’s actually nice to get back to the salt mines,” he wrote 59 years ago.

"It's bittersweet (vừa ngọt vừa đắng, buồn vui lẫn lộn) because so much of these past few months have been spent leading up to this event. Now, it's just like that in one night, it's like a reset," Liu said. "We both have other projects, so it's like back to the salt mines for us."

Two weeks after one of their biggest electoral defeats, the Left is back to the salt mines in Kerala to recapture lost ground. After the summer vacations this academic year, children in hundreds of schools across Kerala were greeted with bags, umbrellas and notebooks by the Students Federation of India (SFI) - the student wing of the CPM.

For one, they're dedicated (tận tụy). They believe in the importance of their work. Lives are saved, pain is eased, the worried and dying are comforted. That's part of it, to be sure. Not only that, it's also exciting and validating! It feels good to be heroic. And the money is good. Emergency physicians reason that they work hard and want to reap the benefits of all that intense labor. Exciting trips, nice things, and good colleges for their kids entice (lôi kéo) physicians back to the salt mines, even as the roof threatens to collapse.

"Show must go on" = chương trình phải tiếp tục -> dù có bất cứ cản trở gì, kế hoạch vẫn phải thực hiện, sự kiện vẫn phải diễn ra.

Ví dụ
But the most media-addled (nghiện mạng xã hội) people in public life are, in fact, Trump’s critics (người chỉ trích). Nobody is quicker to reach the most hysterical conclusions (kết luận điên cuồng). The anti-Trump show must go on, just like the president’s Twitter feed, never mind the details.

Apollo-Ridge was supposed to host (tổ chức) Shady Side Academy in an important Allegheny Conference game. But Shady Side officials (ban lãnh đạo) notified Apollo-Ridge on Monday they are down to 14 healthy players, many of them inexperienced underclassmen (chưa qua đào tạo). The show must go on, however.

Volunteer promoter Sue Robertson said: "A cast of six bring a comic flurry (hài kịch vui nhộn) of suspects and characters together to discover who done what, and why... except, four of the cast are stuck by the side of the road in the van (mắc kẹt trên xe), and only those two knights of the theatre – Sir Gavin of Robertson and Sir Nicholas of Collett – have managed to get to the venue. But the show must go on."

'Airs and graces' = (làm bộ, ra vẻ) ta đây và có đạo đức, cư xử kiêu căng, tự cho mình tài giỏi hơn người; ra bộ thanh lịch để gây ấn tượng.

Ví dụ
"At home, when she's out and about, it's a cardigan and a tweed skirt - no airs and graces there," said journalist Angela Mollard.

And Jacob Rees-Mogg, who gives himself airs and graces but not the benefits of a suit that actually fits, is lying supine on a chaise longue talking about how this is all the fault of the pesky (khó chịu) great British institutions he previously claimed were the only authorities to which we should ever submit ourselves.

That he has airs and graces, no star, proves Stallone, he appears to be already 45 minutes prior to the start of the interview in the Hotel in Los Angeles. Without Entourage, with wife Jennifer Flavin (51). I meet both of them in the Lift, where Flavin is Stallone’s flowered shirt sleeves over. He makes it with stoic calm endure (chịu đựng trong nghịch cảnh).

"In my good graces" nghĩa là gì?

'In one's good graces' = được ai trọng đãi, chiếu cố.

Ví dụ
On the 2016 U.S. Presidential campaign trail, Trump seemingly basking in the limitless (vô hạn) oil-wealth of the desert nation (quốc gia sa mạc), proudly boasted that his businesses derive vast financial benefits from the Saudi’s. He also let it be known that because they are big spenders, they are in his good graces.

Em also talked about Drake, who he had nothing but good things to say about, and rappers who use ghostwriters. "Drake is always going to be in my good graces because he did something for one of my daughters that I will never forget... I like Drake," he said in response to rumors he dissed the Canadian rapper on his track "Lucky You," in which Em raps:

I’ve been mad about Pocket Casts for ages, because while it’s been a reliable podcast player for Android and iOS over the years, it hadn’t been updated (cập nhật) to include some basic features that others had – despite being a paid product. It’s now been overhauled (kiểm tra kĩ lưỡng) with a glorious redesign, and I’m happy to report that it’s back in my good graces as a result.

"Loose talk" nghĩa là gì?

Mẹ nhớ là đừng có đem chuyện này kể cho ba đó nha! Photo by Liesl Leonard on Unsplash

"Loose talk" = cuộc nói chuyện lỏng lẻo -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đoạn hội thoại hoặc câu chuyện vô ý, hớ hênh, vô tình dẫn tới hậu quả là tiết lộ thông tin cá nhân hoặc nhạy cảm cho người khác biết.

Ví dụ
The EU's new defence budget might achieve little and loose talk of a joint army could do harm, a European watchdog has warned.

The idea of a deadline at the end of this month was agreed by Macron and Rinne, and isn’t shared by the EU. “We need to know what the U.K. is proposing,” Rinne said. “Loose talk about proposals for negotiations is irresponsible.”

There's a lot of loose talk out there about human rights being over, as it were. I think that's not true. I think that it's the most important language that has created ethical obligations across the barriers, across the walls, across the frontiers, and has created forms of solidarity that are extremely important and need to be defended.

"A blazing row" có từ "blazing" là cháy sáng, nóng rực -> cuộc cãi vã, tranh cãi to và dữ dội.

Ví dụ
He walked out after a blazing row with his wife.

Her appearance (xuất hiện) came shortly after she bid farewell (nói lời tạm biệt) to beleaguered (bao vây) Prime Minister Boris Johnson after his short trip, and news emerged of her son Prince Andrew's blazing row with a senior aide (sĩ quan).

I knew I’d made a mistake the moment I pushed her. It was as if my arms had become separated from my body, fuelled (kích động) by the heat rising from the pit of my stomach (lõm thượng vị) and spreading across my chest. Yes, we were both drunk, and yes, we were having a blazing row, but I was the one who made it physical.

"Get hitched" nghĩa là gì?

Khi nào "chống lầy" hả con? Photo courtesy: Daniel Johnson

"Get hitched" có từ "hitch" có nghĩa là gắn liền, trói buộc -> kết hôn.

Ví dụ
We watched six couples getting hitched in the tranquil (thanh bình) setting of the garden gazebo (ban công) before having their pictures taken on the beach.

And indeed it did. Ellen even surprised the couple with a dream honeymoon to Bali (and two bikinis to wear on their next tropical adventure!). Haggerty and Burnett say they will take their time to “be normal for a bit” and plan the perfect wedding before they get hitched. But when they’re ready, Bachelor Nation will be watching.

When you’re a lady human of a certain age, you start getting interrogated (tra hỏi) about when you’ll get hitched. If you’re in a committed, long-term relationship with a special someone, your family and friends give themselves ample (phong phú, nhiều) permission to quiz you on your nuptial (hôn nhân) plans, whether you have any or not. "When are you going to put a ring on it?" they’ll ask your partner. "You’re next," they’ll whisper, with a wink, when someone else walks down the aisle. You can and will get ambushed (đột kích) at any social event, if you’ve had the audacity (cả gan) to reach the age of 25 or above without being legally bound to another person in matrimony (hôn nhân). You don’t even need to be in a relationship to qualify for these interrogations; plenty of single women get it, too. If you’re exhausted, having to defend yourself and your decision to be as yet unmarried, you are not alone.

"Chalk and talk" = phấn và lời nói -> cụm từ này nghĩa là phương pháp dạy học truyền thống mà giáo viên dùng phấn để viết lên bảng và giảng cho học sinh. Nó chủ yếu được dùng để phê phán cách dạy và học có phần thiếu chủ động đối với học sinh này.

Ví dụ
The St. Leonard’s Boys Secondary School has received some much-needed equipment that will help it embrace more modern teaching methods rather than sticking to the traditional “chalk and talk” system.

The traditional “chalk-and-talk” seminar room and hushed library are gone. Instead, technology-enhanced active learning spaces equipped with mobile furniture and interactive LCDs are intended to adapt to evolving pedagogical approaches.

What’s next after chalk and talk method’ at the Education Growth Summit held in the city on Thursday. Experts were of the opinion that in a 45-minute class, teachers should talk 25% or less and encourage peer-to-peer learning, where students talk among themselves to learn something new.

"Smitten by someone" có từ "smitten" là ấn tượng mạnh mẽ, làm say mê ai đó -> yêu ai đó.

Ví dụ
He was so smitten by her that he promised to move to Argentina to be near her.

It has come to my attention, through the various reviews I have stumbled upon (tình cờ gặp) online, that Donna Tartt is the kind of author that people either love or hate. While some are smitten by her writing, others can’t deal with the length and detailing of her narrative (kể chuyện). It is rare to hear someone saying that her writing is just alright, meh, not their cup of tea.

It should be as obvious to you now as it is to me that I am utterly besotted (hoàn toàn hồ đồ), smitten by you. I am in love with you. Let’s set up house together. Get away together if that’s impossible. And when I am without you I am a winter guest in an ice storm. I must brave the cold somehow, mustn’t I dearest? Well, I’ll put on a coat, a hat, and a scarf and my walking shoes, that’s brought a smile to my face. I tell myself that soon we will be together again like this.

"Lovey-dovey" = âu yếm, trìu mến, ủy mị -> việc luôn quấn quýt bày tỏ tình cảm là một điều mà các cặp đôi thích thể hiện nhưng quá tự nhiên, đôi khi không ý tứ.

Ví dụ
But the lovey-dovey conversation didn't even dent (ảnh hưởng) readers' affection (tình cảm) for the caring Princess.

Be it embracing his flamboyant (cường điệu) fashion sense or his lovey-dovey photos with wife Deepika Padukone, fans always look forward to Ranveer Singh's Instagram posts. Recently, the actor shared a throwback photo of himself from childhood.

Their music promises “Some of the most heartsick synth-pop (nhạc pop tổng hợp) since Cocteau Twins,” according to music reviewer, Noisey. “We're talking sweeping casios (đồng hồ Casio có kim), massive hooks (đoạn điệp khúc), and lovey-dovey feelings big enough to float on (lơ lửng).”

"Talk the talk and walk the walk" = nói cho hết bài nói và đi bộ hết quãng đường cần đi -> cụm từ này nghĩa là nói cho ra ngọn ra nguồn và làm cho tới nơi tới chốn. Khi đã nói và làm thì nên dốc hết sức mình để thực hiện có hiệu quả.

Ví dụ
“I am no-nonsense, I talk the talk and walk the walk,” said Williamson. “The City is corrupt, racist. We’ve got to stop the shenanigans, the parlor tricks. I want you to support the first black woman mayor in the City of San Diego.”

Pandering to our voting bloc (khối) without substance will not win the Hispanic vote. Why? Because Latinos are people of action. We expect our leaders to talk the talk and walk the walk, not feed us empty rhetoric that consistently falls flat.

When you can trade up at any point without the added financial brutality, you can afford to be driving the nicest vehicle on the road. And why not? Thanks to car leasing options, you can talk the talk and walk the walk without the necessity of dealing with the consequential financial cost.

'Gracing someone with one's presence' = vinh dự với sự hiện diện của ai; ghé thăm ai đó.

Ví dụ
Just as Bash cannot understand what Rhonda needs, he does not see the damage he has done to his relationship with Carmen. People are not going to wait around until he decides to grace them with his presence.

Someone told her, ‘Thank you, Toya for empowering the women at Fridays With Fran and also gracing us with your presence today at TCOL. Blessings to you and your family ❤️❤️❤️’ Another commenter said, ‘I love their church we visited back in April for the 1st time, and we were truly blessed.’

Thank you, Foreign Minister. Welcome back to the Council on Foreign Relations. Good to see you here. Thank you for gracing us with your presence. A quick comment and then a question, if I’m allowed. The comment is I listened very carefully to what you said about the kingdom’s reaction to the murder of Adnan Khashoggi—Adnan—Jamal Khashoggi. And it bothers (làm bận tâm) me that what I don’t hear is three words from the crown prince, which are quite simple and straightforward: I take responsibility.

'A saving grace' = vẻ duyên dáng cứu lại -> điều bù đắp cho những khiếm khuyết của ai đó.

Ví dụ
It was a seamless (không đường lối) stay—and a saving grace for a work trip where we wanted to stay near each other, but didn’t necessarily want to bunk up like it was summer camp. Afterward, I started to see similar options everywhere. They called themselves everything from aparthotels and deconstructed hotels to self-guided hotels and anti-Airbnbs.

My husband and I are working on this. Dedicating time for meaningful conversation about our feelings has become a saving grace for our marriage. Any slights or major disagreements are mostly saved for a weekly family meeting. These one- or two-hour conversations — held when Oscar’s napping and my husband and I are both relaxed and less emotional — give us an opportunity to reflect on why we are feeling crummy (buồn chán) and troubleshoot the week ahead.

In a new conversation between Forsyth and film critic David Cairns, Forsyth remains humbled by all of Cairns' praising. He comes off like a man that wants to take audiences on emotional journeys that align with his sensibilities (nhạy cảm). We're just lucky that those sensibilities feel like a saving grace amongst the hatred and vitriol of today. That isn't to say that the director is the filmmaker for our moment, it's that he's the filmmaker for every moment. Other special features include:

'Pitch in and help' có từ 'pitch in' là sẵn sàng giúp đỡ, hỗ trợ -> tình nguyện tham gia (cùng với ai) và giúp (với nhiệm vụ nào đó).

Ví dụ
The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is offering a simple, easy way for everyone to pitch in and help improve the environment. Residents can safely dispose (vứt bỏ) of unwanted household chemicals and other chemical wastes, by bringing these items to the next Household Hazardous Waste recycling event.

"I'd like to see more stuff the whole community can use and participate in, especially in a way that combats climate change like growing food and knowing about nature," said Fisher. "People are worth saving. Everyone needs to pitch in and help." The group will be holding climate-based events for the rest of week.

"All these teams from the community came together. Everybody brought something different to be able to help these people from the Bahamas. There's a lot of children that need our help. A lot of people. It's a beautiful thing. And we're grateful for the organization for letting us pitch in and help out," said Vasquez.

“There’s no hidden agenda, no behind the door. Whatever you are here for we are here to help.” “The point of the place is a DIY garage,” added Chris. “We will pitch in and help you if you want, but we don’t just fix your bike and all your problems are gone. “You muck in and you’ll hopefully get something from doing that as well as having a fixed bike. You’re getting a bit of self satisfaction (hài lòng) at having achieved something.”

“‘Trust’ is my vent. In 2018, nothing is sacred. Everyone is everywhere and knows everybody. I don’t text too personal because somebody might screenshot it and share it. People stare at me. 'Cool reception' = đón tiếp lạnh nhạt, không thiện cảm, khinh khỉnh, không nhiệt tình.

Ví dụ
Hong Kong tycoon (ông trùm) Li Ka-shing’s appeal for leniency (khoan dung, hiền từ) for protesters gets cool reception from Chinese media.

The filing met with a cool reception among left-leaning judicial observers as it was widely condemned on the right. Yet those criticisms are not quite borne out (xác nhận) by the court’s 2018-2019 term. Though the justices divided 5-4 in 17 of cases, 10 of those decisions featured a majority of four liberals and one conservative.

But in line with his new master, the loyal minister has turned worryingly Eurosceptic — at least on the evidence of his (very long) speech on Wednesday night. He got a correspondingly cool reception from the largely Remainer crowd when he deviated from (lệch hướng) the usual anodyne (làm an ủi) praise of banking’s contribution to the economy to extol the virtues of our new PM and the opportunities of Brexit.
