"A cold day in hell" nghĩa là gì?

Nghe nói vào đây vui lắm. Photo by: James Lee on Unsplash

"A cold day in hell" = ngày lạnh lẽo ở địa ngục -> nghĩa là sự việc bất khả thi được sử dụng để ám chỉ điều mà người nói nghĩ rằng sẽ không bao giờ xảy ra.

Ví dụ
“It will be a cold day in hell before Southwest starts moving away from 737s because that’s all they got,” Hart said, referring to Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N), which has canceled (hủy) flights into January because of the MAX grounding.

Most audio editing programs these days have gone cross-platform (đa nền tảng). I thought it would be a cold day in hell before Digital Performer made it to the PC and FL Studio made it to the Mac, yet both these things have happened.

It will be a cold day in hell before I vote for another bond issue for the AVUHSD. From what I have read in the Antelope Valley Press recently it seems that a cabal (phe đảng) is running AVUHSD and now in addition to the petty (nhỏ nhặt) politics they have raised the fees for new home construction.

"Wouldn't shout if a shark bit him" nghĩa là gì?

"Wouldn't shout if a shark bit him" = chẳng buồn la hét dù bị cá mập cắn.

Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is as tight as two coats of paint. He loves his money too much and wouldn't shout if a shark bit him. I call him 'whispers' because he never shouts.

Since dropping the pick at Lady Musgrove we have met up with a retired cruising yachty who happily admits that he is so mean he wouldn’t shout if a shark bit him. But, I guess that’s another story.

Reynolds said he would have loved to use the health and wellness centre recently opened by Souths teammate Damien Cook, but he said the No.9 was "too tight" to let him use if for free. "He wouldn't shout if a shark bit him," Reynolds quipped within earshot (trong tầm nghe) of Cook.

"Do someone's bit" nghĩa là làm tròn bổn phận của ai đó; đóng góp phần mình (vào việc nghĩa...).

Ví dụ
What happens when you are out travelling, when those eco-friendly mechanisms (máy móc, cơ chế) you’ve build do not apply? Here are some practices you can make part of your travel routine to ensure you continue to do your bit for the environment.

If you have electronics in your home, office or school that are headed for the dump, perhaps consider whether they could be re-purposed for use (tái mục đích sử dụng) instead. Get in touch with us and do your bit for the planet; we offer collection and recycling services that can help keep toxins out of the ground and electronics in circulation for longer!

Societal attitudes towards mental illness (bệnh tâm thần) have a long way to go in Myanmar. We need to discard attitudes that punish sufferers. Do your bit to combat stigma (dấu hiệu bệnh) in everyday life by familiarising yourself with different symptoms of mental health conditions, and listen to the experiences of those (and their families) who are affected by them.

"Every bit as (something)" có nghĩa là đều nhau, như nhau, bằng nhau (về đặc điểm, tính chất nào đó).

Ví dụ
The Mass Ave location opened earlier this year, and it is every bit as beautiful as the Fishers store.

What's more, the Taycan is every bit as good as you'd expect of a Porsche that will cost you at least $150,000, which is to say it's very good indeed. It's just that this car uses electricity to get you where you're going, too.

Even in apartment buildings ripping at the seams with the latest amenities (tiện nghi), Boston-area renters — especially in the competitive high-end (tinh tế, sành điệu) market — expect their units to be every bit as decked (được trang hoàng lộng lẫy) out as their fitness center.

The 27-year-old, who has family from Liverpool said moving to the city was the best decision he has ever made and he "loves Liverpool to bits".

Kensi, Deeks, Sabatino and Wallace fended off (chống đỡ) a first wave of attackers at their CIA bunker (boong-ke) in Iraq. Kensi then played sniper (người bắn tỉa) from a rooftop perch (vị trí thuận lợi) to take out a second group. A third wave was lured (bị dụ) inside the shed (nhà kho), where a remote machine gun turret (tháp pháo) awaited them, while Kensi, Deeks et al slipped out a bottom hatch (cửa sập). When the machine gun ran empty and the baddies entered the shed, the place blew to bits while the good guys scampered away.

Photo by Sabrina Schulz from Pexels

"Little strokes fell great oaks" = những nhát chặt nhỏ đốn ngã cây sồi lớn-> những nhiệm vụ to lớn, khó khăn đều được hoàn thành từ những nỗ lực nhỏ, từng bước hoàn thiện, tương tự tục ngữ Việt "một cây làm chẳng lên non, 3 cây chụm lại lên hòn núi cao".

Ví dụ
Little strokes fell great oaks; with persistent (kiên định) and continuous campaigning (chiến dịch) and practice you can successfully integrate (phối hợp) your process efficiently into your organization.

As we've discussed in this column before, cancelling Sky TV becomes a decision with a lifetime value (giá trị chọn đời) of $250,000, and drinking one less coffee knocks six years off your mortgage (thế chấp).

Small strokes fell great oaks. Benjamin Franklin famously said that little strokes fell great oaks. And while he obviously wasn't referring to swimming strokes, the same principle (nguyên tắc) applies to learning to swim as to knocking down (hạ gục) a giant tree: success comes through incremental (tiến bộ) progress.

Bel: "But what occasion is there? He can't marry them both."

Bill Hughes: "I was only acting the maggot with acting. I really wanted to work in television."

“Don’t be acting the maggot now,” your Da would say. What does he mean? “Don’t pupate (biến thành nhộng)”, “Don’t shed your skin and develop into a fly”? No. He means stop messing around (gây rối). Obviously.

Panto villianry aside, Rory Kockott should be sat in the stands (khán đài) for a good few months in the aftermath of that. He can act the maggot all he likes, he's shown a coward's instinct (bản năng hèn nhát) there.

"A class act" = hành động đẳng cấp -> nói về người xuất sắc, ưu tú vượt trội, thành công. "Class" trong thể thao (những năm 1800) là để mô tả những vận động viên xuất sắc. Từ những năm 1900, "act" được thêm vào để sử dụng cả trong ngành giải trí.

Ví dụ
He may be part of the Mets crosstown rivals (đối thủ hàng đầu), but Aaron Judge is a class act.

You are a class act Erin, one of the best sports broadcasters (chương trình phát sóng) on Aussie TV. You recently came in to a shop I was in to grab some lunch and some footy (bóng đá) fans asked you for a pic. You were so lovely, big smiles all around.

But then Coach Frey came onto our bus and said although his team won, that our team was the best track team (đội đua xuất sắc nhất) in the state that year. As I am writing this letter, tears come to my eyes as they have every time in the past 49 years that I have relayed this story. A true class act.

"Fair-haired boy" = Cậu bé cưng -> Người được cưng chiều, đối xử ưu tiên nhất. Cụm danh từ này chỉ tất cả nam giới nói chung.

Ví dụ
Who was this enchantress (bà phù thủy) who cast a spell on my fair-haired boy? It was a neighboring farmer’s John Deere combine. A lovely shade of green specific to the brand, this particular beauty wasn’t too big of a beast to intimidate (hăm dọa) a little boy, but, big enough to enthrall (mê hoặc, nô dịch hóa) him with the roar (tiếng rống) of her engine.

Apparently, to get hired (được tuyển vào) into the Trump White House you have to look the part, and say something that the boss likes (preferably on Fox News, making you the new, fair-haired boy or girl). The problem is that you get your exit notice just about as easily and everyone appears to be about one tweet from out the door. Just ask John Bolton. Is this any way to run a government?

If you are after a tillage (việc canh tác) farmer, head for the “big boys and their toys” machinery section where they'll be admiring the latest in tractor (máy kéo) technology.

Boys and their toys!’ This expression of exasperation (sự làm trầm trọng lên) might give way to admiration when you get a glimpse (cái nhìn lướt qua) of the many miniature (tiểu họ, thu nhỏ) car collections in Bengaluru. This is no kid’s business; it involves hours of scouring, saving up, and maintenance, besides keeping an eye out for new collections (bộ sưu tập). "A bit thick" = hơi dày -> cụm từ này nghĩa là quá quắt, quá đáng; điều bất hợp lý, điều vô lý.

Ví dụ
Terence Chapman (Con, East Preston) said: “A detailed application will come back to this committee so I really do not understand, and maybe I’m being a bit thick, I do not understand why we are now getting into realms (lĩnh vực) of discussions that are totally outside of the proposals at this committee.”

At every stage of its development, The Hundred has got it wrong. The first plan still had six-ball overs and the infamous fresh tactical dimension even though 100 doesn’t divide by six. It has alienated (bị bệnh tâm thần) existing cricket fans, come up with laughably obvious bullshit reasons for why it isn’t just a T20 tournament (vòng thi đấu), and implied that women are a bit thick.

Fender, they say, is helping to change perceptions (quan điểm, nhận thức). “A lot of people here are portrayed as a bit thick,” says Adam. “Severely working class, nothing going on. But there’s a lot of really eloquent (có khả năng diễn thuyết), intelligent people with a lot of things to say, like Sam Fender.
