"Like a whipped dog" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng có chụp hình, em mắc cỡ lắm! Photo by Adrian Infernus on Unsplash

"Like a whipped dog" = giống như con chó bị đánh -> cụm từ này nghĩa là với biểu hiện, thái độ chán nản, không vui hoặc xấu hổ (có thể vì bị phạt hoặc bị đánh bại).

Ví dụ
We first met Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy. He was a fellow (gã, anh chàng) with a big voice and a bigger stick, a stick in the form of an Infinity Stone. In Captain Marvel, Ronan behaves more like a whipped dog.

In less than two years UK left the ERM like a whipped dog at a painful price which left a bitter taste in the mouth of a lot of Conservative MPs (nghị sĩ) and members. This bitterness will come to haunt the person who took over (tiếp quản, tiếp tục) from the no nonsense lady.

The wayward (ương ngạnh) Amy Brookheimer (Anna Chlumsky) and feckless (vô trách nhiệm, cẩu thả) Dan Egan (Reid Scott) make a pair of sexually misguided (sai lầm) missiles. Sarah Sutherland plays Selina’s emotionally abused (ngược đãi) daughter, Catherine, like a whipped dog.

"Steal a kiss" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Montse Monmo

"Steal a kiss" = Cướp nụ hôn -> Lén hôn ai/hôn ai một cách nhanh chóng và bí mật.

Ví dụ
'I didn't steal any hearts on The Bachelor but I did steal a kiss from Troy,' Nikki captioned a picture of the hunk (gã đàn ông lực lưỡng) leaning in with his tongue out.

Well, that is for the most part. Sakura did spend years infatuated (say đắm) with Sasuke, so fans can give her a break when she needs to steal a kiss. Now, a new spin-off novel for Naruto has broken down a rather epic (bản hùng ca) scene starring the couple, and it sees Sakura lay a fat kiss on her husband.

The actress, who has been accompanying (đồng hành) her man on his Jonas Brothers tour, had fans going aww when she stole a kiss from Nick as he danced past her row. During an interactive segment (phần, khúc tương tác) with their audience Joe, Kevin and Nick, took their guitars and microphones and crooned (hát ngâm nga) their song.

"Kissing cousin" nghĩa là gì?

"Kissing cousin" = Anh em họ, con cô cháu bác thường chào thân mật nhau bằng những cái hôn trên má -> chỉ những sự giống nhau mặc dù không quá liên quan và thân thuộc với nhau.

Ví dụ
'DC City', a kissing cousin of Ubiquity's original recording of The Third Eye, is a mellow (êm dịu) summer night type dedication to Chocolate City.

"A sandwich is like the kissing cousin of a pizza — a dough (bột nhão) with something on it and a sandwich is dough with something in it," he said.

I am entirely confused by cousin relationships beyond "first." This chart is very helpful though it lacks the category (phân loại) of "kissing cousin.".

"Kiss up to" nghĩa là gì?

Nịnh ta đi thì ta mới cho cưỡi. Photo by  Brandon Hoogenboom

"Kiss up to (someone)" = Nịnh hót, bợ đỡ ai và mong nhận được ân huệ từ họ.

Ví dụ
Our own Judi Franco wonders if Christie just signed the law to kiss up to President Donald Trump, who's on record saying transgender people (người chuyển giới) should use whatever bathrooms they want.

Workers who kiss up to the boss might be behaving badly when not playing the role, according to a research published in the June edition of the Journal of Applied Psychology. Employees perform "impression management (IM)" — what MarketWatch referred to as "kissing up" — to get a good performance appraisal (sự đánh giá, thẩm định) or some other advantage of being on the boss's good side.

For all you suck-ups who kiss up to the boss in hopes of earning their favor, enjoy the benefits while they last, because this ingratiation (sự lấy lòng) comes at a cost to your work later. The act of maintaining a people-pleasing facade (vẻ bề ngoài) is work that takes up energy we could be using towards our actual job, a new study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found.

"Kiss the rod" nghĩa là gì?

Mặt nice thế ai nỡ đánh? Photo by Marko Blažević

"Kiss the rod" = Hôn lên roi -> Nhẫn nhục chịu đựng trừng phạt nhục hình.

Ví dụ
I had been lying to people, sure, I can kiss the rod. But I've said nothing wrong. I can't understand this.

So long as he will not kiss the rod, and his stubborn spirit (lòng ngang bướng) sour (gắt gỏng, chanh chua). And the scorn (khinh miệt) of nature and curse (nguyền rủa) of God are heavy on peace like ours.

Was it from a disposition (sự sắp đặt, sắp xếp) fond of change, or to procure new masters?—if those were your motives, you have reward before you—go, retire into silent obscurity (tối tăm, mù mịt), and kiss the rod that scourges (trừng phạt, áp bức) you, bury the prospects you had in store, that you and your posterity (hậu thể, con cháu nối tiếp) would participate in the blessings of freedom, and the employments of your country—let the rich and insolent (xấc láo, láo xược) alone be your rulers.

"Kiss better" nghĩa là gì?

"Kiss (something) better" = Thổi phù cho đỡ đau -> Hôn lên vết thương để ai đó bớt đau và cảm thấy đỡ hơn.

Ví dụ
It was too much for Callum who punched Ben out of frustration (vỡ mộng, thất vọng) but it only encouraged Ben more. Ben said: "Ow that hurt. Want to kiss it better?".

Furious Callum punched Ben and yelled at (hét vào mặt) him to "shut up" (im đi), before storming out of the house as a laughing Ben invited him to "kiss it better".

When a child is physically hurt, it can help to ask them where it hurts specifically, and then offer to kiss it better. This is often enough to help stop them crying. My hypothesis (giả thiết) is the same could be applied for emotional wounds (tổn thương, nỗi đau về cảm xúc). As I was writing this blog post to you, I actually followed these steps, and I certainly feel soothed (xoa dịu).

"Kiss off" nghĩa là gì?

"Kiss (someone or something) off" = Rũ bỏ/xóa bỏ ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
She's locking the door on an unreliable ex-boyfriend (bạn trai cũ không nương dựa được), going over and over the policies that will allow her to kiss him off (mwah) for good (mãi mãi).

Johnson walked up No. 18 at the Tournament of Champions on Sunday just before securing the 17th win of his career like he'd just been paid $1.3 million to go to Hawaii for a week of golf and had his model wife waiting to kiss him off the back of the green. Maybe because ... he had.

All I ever get from [Secretary of State John Foster] Dulles are favorable reports, but the French are getting their asses kicked. Blackmailing bastards! Damn them! They have ten divisions bogged down in Vietnam, and every time I ask the sons of bitches to put more troops into NATO they kiss me off unless I promise to bail (đóng tiền bảo lãnh) them out. The French have got themselves into this. They ought to get themselves out of it.

"Kiss and tell" nghĩa là gì?

"Kiss and tell" = Hôn rồi kể -> Kể lại với người khác về người bạn tình để nói khoe khoang khoác loác về điều đó/kể lại với người khác về những chuyện riêng tư và hết sức tế nhị của mình để buôn vui và khoác loác.

Ví dụ
The TV personality answered: 'Just as a gentleman, I’m not one to kiss and tell ever. However, it wasn’t a hookup, but, you know, I’ve talked about this before, she was my girlfriend for a while, Tiffani Thiessen, who played Kelly.'

Speaking to Us Weekly exclusively (độc quyền), the Bachelorette alum opened up about the status of his relationship with the “Confident” pop star. Though he stated that he would “never” kiss and tell as he aims to “keep it 100 percent” to himself moving forward, he also confirmed that he “definitely” is on good terms with Lovato.

Jennifer Aniston doesn't kiss and tell. That is, unless it's on national TV (trên đài truyền hình quốc gia). During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres show, the Friends alum couldn't help but question host Ellen DeGeneres about her recent on-air smooch (sự âu yếm trên truyền hình, đang diễn ra gần đây) with Howard Stern. As she asked her good pal (bạn) DeGeneres, "I would like to know how that kiss happened with him."

"Kiss and cry area" nghĩa là gì?

"Kiss and cry area" = Khu vực vừa hôn vừa khóc -> Khu vực trên sân băng dành cho những người vận động viên bộ môn trượt băng nghệ thuật nghỉ ngơi và đợi kết quả sau khi hoàn thành xong phần thi của mình. Tùy thuộc vào kết quả của mình, người thì khóc vì thất bại, người thì vui mừng và ôm hôn ban huấn luyện, gia đình và bạn bè vì chiến thắng.

Ví dụ
Meryl Davis and Charlie White (USA) receive hugs in the kiss and cry area after receiving their scores during the ice dance free dance program.

It’s a security clearance (phạm vi thông qua an ninh) – denoting (chỉ thị) that the coaches are allowed to enter the “Kiss and Cry area” – which, yes, is official terminology (thuật ngữ chính thức) in the world of figure skating.

When you first hear the term, you might think the "kiss and cry" area in figure skating is a designated nook (góc, xó xỉnh được chỉ định) in the ice rink (sân băng) where athletes (vận động viên) sit, break down, and proceed to kiss a ton. You might not be too far off but the "kiss and cry" area in figure skating is actually where skaters go to sit and wait while their scores are declared post-performance. You've probably seen the little area, too.

"Blow a kiss" nghĩa là gì?

Để Mị hôn cho mà xem. Photo by Henry Gillis

"Blow a kiss" = Thổi bay một nụ hôn -> Gửi nụ hôn gió cho ai/gửi cho ai nụ hôn từ xa. Các bạn xem hình minh họa là hiểu liền hah.

Ví dụ
Mourinho responded with a grin (nhe răng cười, cái cười toe toét) and a wave out of the studio window, while he also appeared to blow a kiss to the crowd (đám đông, mọi người).

Since that draw with Wilder, Fury has signed with Top Rank and ESPN, and pretended (giả vờ) to blow a kiss to his summer opponent (đối thủ) Tom Schwarz.

As she strutted (đi vênh váo) across the runway, Kate Spigener stopped to wave to her family, grinning from ear to ear, and to blow a kiss to her husband.

"Do you kiss your mama with that mouth?" nghĩa là gì?

Mẹ là để yêu thương. Photo by Luísa Schetinger

"Do you kiss your mama with that mouth?" :)

Ví dụ
Blow a kiss. Sealed with a kiss. You can kiss that raise goodbye. Do you kiss your momma with that mouth? Fish-kiss. French kiss. Kiss and make up. Kiss off. Kiss my dust. Kiss the porcelain throne. We’re a family newspaper so we won’t refer to “***-kissing.”

Linda plays Regan: a young girl possessed by a demonic presence (bị quỷ ám). And it’s not just the horrifying nature of the film that would have you wondering if she should have taken on such a role so young – Linda also had to simulate (mô phỏng) masturbating (thủ dâm) with a crucifix (hình thập ác), and scream (la hét), “Your mother sucks cocks in Hell.” Do you kiss your own mother with that mouth, Regan?!

In a time where the hashtag #fakenews is as common as pineapple on pizza, we know what you’re thinking and most likely saying. Those are some colorful words (lời màu mè, hoa mỹ) you’re using, too. Do you kiss your mama with that mouth? But according to a source close to WGTC, this is really going to happen and given that it’s the same source who (correctly) tipped us off back in early June that Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart would be joining the franchise (đặc quyền kinh doanh) in Hobbs & Shaw, we’re inclined (nghiêng, lệch, thiên về) to believe them.

"Like blue blazes" nghĩa là gì?

Wao, giống lạc vào xứ chim quá! Photo by Waranont (Joe) on Unsplash

"Like blue blazes" = như ngọn lửa xanh -> cụm từ này nghĩa là rất nhiều, dữ dội, mãnh liệt, điên lên.

Ví dụ
Tennessee Private Sam Watkins remembered, “Two hundred cannon were roaring and belching (nổ ra, phun ra) like blue blazes. It seemed that the earth was frequently moved from its foundations, and you could hear it grate (kêu kèn kẹt) as it moved.”

This will be the second Geneva Motor Show since Alpine's resuscitation (sự phục hồi) by parent company Renault. In 2017 it was one of the stars of the show, with critics fawning (xun xoe, bợ đỡ) over its good looks and clear allusions (sự ám chỉ) to the classic Alpine. The new car has a 1.8-litre engine producing 252bhp, and, according to Andrew English, "goes like blue blazes".

I think that they will look at what we tried to do, what we began, which is to create a mindset in Coloradans that you could be pro-business but at the same time have the highest environmental standards, the highest ethical (thuộc về đạo đức) standards; that you could fight like blue blazes to make sure that companies are accountable and that the jobs that are being created are accessible (dễ tiếp cận) to people from all different backgrounds, and that we were actually expanding the middle class (tầng lớp trung lưu).

"Like flies to manure" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Alex Alvarez on Unsplash

"Like flies to manure" = như ruồi bu phân -> cụm từ này nghĩa là tụ tập đông đúc với sự quan tâm sâu sắc, mãnh liệt, không cưỡng lại được (thường mang ý ám chỉ sự khó chịu).

Ví dụ
And the new circular (hình tròn) LED layout simply draws you with almost a robotic (máy móc) sort of hypnosis. The Fat Boy sits with an air of authority that only magnifies once you get into the saddle. It’s no wonder (không có gì lạ) why overcompensating, middle-aged (ở tuổi trung niên) men are drawn (bị thu hút) towards it like flies to manure.

Naturally, such a France has never existed. While it is not the sign of an inherently racist (theo chủ nghĩa phân biệt chủng tộc), reactionary (phản động) movement, the use of nationalist (chủ nghĩa dân tộc) symbols nevertheless reveals the movement’s weaknesses and limitations: first and most obviously, the French flag and the Marseillaise, while they attract working class people who would never have marched under a party banner, also attract the organised far right like flies to manure.

Walt attracts supervillains like flies to manure, the show explains to us. He even creates them. It’s very possible that without Walt’s tutelage (sự kèm cặp), the sociopath (người bệnh tâm thần) Todd would have remained an exterminator (người hủy diệt) instead of a terminator (người cuối cùng), that without Walt’s $69 million in startup seed money (vốn đầu tư ban đầu), the Nazis would have remained low-level white power criminal idiots, and without Walt’s product Lydia would have remained a megacorporation (công ty lớn) middle manager moonlighting in meth distribution. Even if Walt is killed in these last two episodes, he leaves the world in the darker and more twisted place.
