"My heart is in the right place" nghĩa là gì?

Tâm sạch. Photo by  Tim Mossholder

"(One's) heart is in the right place" = Trái tim đặt đúng chỗ -> Ai đó chỉ có ý/mục đích tốt khi làm điều gì mặc dù họ làm không đúng/mọi việc diễn ra không như ý muốn nhưng suy cho cùng họ vẫn có lòng tốt muốn làm.

Ví dụ
“I know I draw attention, so trying to hit the pocket, trying to find the open man,” LaVine said. “Sometimes, I might even be forcing it a little too much and I’m getting some of those turnovers. I know my heart is in the right place. I know what I have to do down the stretch. I know what I have at the beginning of the game. I got to get us going offensively.”

Working closely with Meadows has been Councilman Erik Altmann, who also should get a second term. We haven’t always agreed with Altmann on some policies, such as his opposition (sự phản đối) to a local ordinance (sắc lệnh/pháp lệnh) banning harmful LGBTQ conversion therapy for the town’s youth, but his heart is in the right place and we respect his ability to maintain an independent perspective (bối cảnh/quan điểm độc lập).

What you do is nonetheless wrong. Since you cannot save all three strangers, you must balance their competing claims to your help. The left person’s claim to be helped is balanced by one claim on the right, leaving one other claim on the right unbalanced. You are thereby morally (theo đạo lý) required to save those on the right side of the pier, and are morally blameworthy (đáng trách mắng) for failing to give due weight to each person’s claim. Even if your heart is in the right place, morality (đạo đức) also requires you to use your head.

"My heart bleeds for you" = Tim đang rỉ máu vì anh -> Buồn/đau khổ vì ai đang trải qua thời gian khó khăn; sự cảm thông sâu sắc với ai.

Ví dụ
Justice? (công lý) My dear Dvir. My heart bleeds for you. Young, bright and vibrant (sôi nổi, đầy khí lực) you were torn from us by evil incarnate (quỷ dữ hiện thân). The hole left in your parents' hearts will never be healed (không bao giờ được chữa lành).

Matthew’s friend, Darryl Louch said on Facebook: ‘I have such a heavy heart today. ‘Matthew Turner my heart bleeds for you mate. ‘You have risen above challenges in the past, but nothing you have ever endured (chịu đựng) will make this one any easier.’

"I don't know if you will ever see this but thank you so much for this song I am 69 years old we just lost our son on 8-2-19 six days before his 38th Birthday he was my son and friend I miss him so much and this song helps heal my heart thank you again my heart bleeds for you and your family no parent should have to feel this pain but your song reminds us we will be together again."

"Slowpoke" nghĩa là gì?

Cố lên nào con ơi! Photo by Jordan Rowland on Unsplash

"Slowpoke" là từ dùng để chỉ những người cực kỳ chậm chạp, làm gì cũng chậm. Từ này được sử dụng ở Mỹ, đặc biệt khi muốn nhắc đến những đứa trẻ vì chúng thường di chuyển và làm mọi thứ quá chậm. Ở Anh, người ta dùng từ "slowcoach" có ý nghĩa tương đương.

Ví dụ
During the week, Dave O must feel like a caged (bị giam giữ/bị nhốt) zoo animal, doing the same old boring road loops (đường vòng) with a slowpoke like me. That’s OK. He more than makes up for (bù đắp cho) it on the weekends.

One such slowpoke route (tuyến đường) is the M42, along 42nd Street, which cuts across Times Square, where the traffic continues to move along at a tortoise-like pace (tốc độ như rùa bò). For comparison purposes, I took a couple of trips on buses on both streets.

Several years ago, I was pedaling (đạp xe đạp) a cargo (hàng hoá) bike uphill with my three- and five-year-old sons, who were savagely (gay gắt/dã man) heckling (chất vấn) me. “Go faster!” they cried. “Speed it up, slowpoke,” they laughed. Something in me snapped (gãy/vỡ). I pulled over to the side of the road, made both boys get off the bike, and established a rule: they could only be radically encouraging and say things like “Go, Mommy, go! You’re so strong!” They had to practice ten times before I allowed them back on the bike.

"Sing to sleep" nghĩa là gì?

Tự hát cho mình là hạnh phúc. Photo by Kendal

"Sing (one) to sleep" = Hát cho ai ngủ với giọng hát nhẹ nhàng và ngọt ngào; hát cho ai  đến khi ai đó ngủ.

Ví dụ
I was finally home from the airport, only to be greeted with how happy she had been to have me sing her to sleep the night before.

Just to sing you to sleep. I wake you up. The EP is like a cycle of a day, isn't it? I'll wake you up in the morning, and then I'll sing you to sleep.

Kevin said his unique sleep method (phương pháp ngủ duy nhất) has been more effective than singing a soothing lullaby (lời ru êm dịu). “Carter is not a good sleeper and I cannot carry a tune so rather than sing him to sleep I just talk about work until he drifts off (bắt đầu ngủ say),” he said. “I’d been talking for a good 15 minutes before mentioning my work and that really seemed to do the trick. “Being sleep-deprived I find myself trying to make the best of these situations.

"Sleep around the clock" nghĩa là gì?

Ngủ như chết. Photo by Matheus Vinicius

"Sleep around the clock" = Ngủ 24 tiếng/suốt ngày suốt đêm -> Ngủ liên tục trong một thời gian dài.

Ví dụ
A new fence sprung up (nhảy rào) this week around the Applegate Park gazebo where neighbors say homeless people (người vô gia cư) sit and sleep around the clock.

Researchers asked participants to wear devices to track their activity and sleep around the clock for seven days. The devices registered sleep duration (khoảng thời gian ngủ) as well as the midpoint of total sleeping time for each day, including workdays and time off.

Isabelle was rushed to hospital in Southampton in July after becoming so poorly she would sleep around the clock, only waking occasionally for milk or medicine. Lengthy emergency surgery (ca phẫu thuật khẩn cấp kéo dài) saved her life and removed the whole tumour (khối u). Isabelle is amazing family and medics with her progress but is currently undergoing chemotherapy (hóa học trị liệu) and is likely to need Proton Beam Therapy in future.

"Sleep like a baby" = Ngủ như em bé -> Ngủ rất sâu và bình yên.

Ví dụ
Try these simple guidelines and you will sleep like a baby. A person spends a third of his life sleeping. And this is good.

“I sleep like a baby at night and I like it that way. I sleep curled up in a ball like a very content child, and I want to continue doing so.

Place one on your nightstand (bàn đầu giường) or if you really want to sleep like a baby curl up underneath a gravity (trọng lực) or weighted blanket.

"Lull (one) to sleep" = Ru ai ngủ -> Nhẹ nhàng làm cho ai thoải mái/dễ chịu để ngủ từ từ và ngủ một cách bình yên.

Ví dụ
From heart-to-heart talks to singing her Elvis Presley songs to lull her to sleep, Jesse and Michelle had a one-of-a-kind, unbreakable bond (mối quan hệ bền chặt).

Dim (lờ mờ) lighting is ideal to lull a baby to sleep, set the mood, or decrease brightness (giảm ánh điện) for those who are sensitive (nhạy cảm) to light. These energy-saving bulbs vary in their settings and features, so finding the right bulbs for your home means weighing all options.

Lena revealed that after that disaster (thảm họa), she slept on an inflatable mattress (cái nệm bơm phồng lên) on a friend’s living room floor, and: ‘I slept in my father’s office between two filing cabinets (tủ sắt) and used a box of printer paper as my nightstand (bàn đầu giường), letting Friday night on Sixth Avenue lull me to sleep.’

"In a sound sleep" = Đang chìm trong giấc ngủ say -> Đang ngủ say sưa và không thể bị đánh thức được.

Ví dụ
It is as easy as drawing a deep breath while in a sound sleep. “My teammates were responsible for it,” the man dubbed “The Machine” says.

“Imagine being in a sound sleep,’’ said McGrath, a father of two. “You get woken up by an alarm and the lights turning on, and you have to slide down the pole and figure out where you’re going in the fire truck (xe tải bốc cháy). [You] get there and perform, and people’s lives are at stake (đang lâm nguy, đe dọa).’’

“The noise at times is horrendous (kinh khủng, khủng khiếp). If there is a sound wall, you really can’t tell if it is effective,” said Douglas, who added the work is 24-7, with bright lights at night. “You can be in a sound sleep and then at times it sounds like a helicopter is hovering (bay lượn) over your house. This is affecting people’s physical health.”

"Drink myself to sleep" nghĩa là gì?

"Drink oneself to sleep" = Ai đó uống say đến nỗi không biết trời đất gì, rồi ngủ thiếp đi và không dậy nỗi.

Ví dụ
Nikia Lopez also said that when she had breast cancer (ung thư vú) Lopez would take care of her and then drink himself to sleep and vomit on himself.

After that first deployment, I was in Germany and pretty screwed up with insomnia (hội chứng mất ngủ). I’d drink myself to sleep, then wake up with nightmares about combat (trận chiến), sometimes with my family in them.

Yoo Ji Ho also worries what people might say about a woman who dared to date him, as if his shame were somehow transferable (có thể dời chuyển). Although Lee Jung In does not seem to mind Yoo’s single fatherhood, her life has no room for emotions that might threaten her sense of control. She’s quick to reject Yoo’s romantic overtures and then suffers silently. Instead she prefers to endure a sterile (vô ích) relationship and drink herself to sleep in the company of her best friend. Lee Jung In and Yoo Ji Ho can’t stop being attracted to each other, yet given her reticence (tính trầm lặng, dè dặn), they can only take a slow step forward before having to step back.

"Be sleeping on the job" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by  Koko Curio

"Be sleeping on the job" = Ngủ quên/ngủ gật lúc đang làm việc -> Trốn tránh trách nhiệm; không siêng năng và mất tập trung trong công việc.

Ví dụ
You should never be sleeping on the job, unless that is your job description. For those looking to earn some serious cash while counting sheep, look no further because NASA has a position for you.

Indeed, what are the police doing? Why do we still have gangs (băng nhóm) running loose in our country? Can’t the police round up these rogue gangsters (giang hồ lêu lổng, lừa đảo) and put them away for good? Cops (cảnh sát) must be sleeping on the job.

The two Sewerage & Water Board operators who were allegedly (cho là/cho rằng) sleeping on the job nearly two months ago as citywide water pressure plummeted could not be reached by phone or intercom numerous times and had to be roused (làm thức tỉnh, khuấy động) from the chairs where they slept by another employee, according to an internal investigation report the utility (thực tiễn) released Friday (Jan. 11).

"Twenty winks" nghĩa là gì?

"Twenty winks" = 20 lần nháy mắt -> Chợp mắt; giấc ngủ ngắn; giấc ngủ trưa ngắn.

Ví dụ

It's a question that is illuminating (chiếu rọi, làm sáng tỏ) the sleep research that examines how wider societal factors (yếu tố xã hội) affect our forty—or thirty, or twenty—winks.

wenty winks — the dream of many an overworked employee — could soon be extended to 40 if a bill presented by a private member receives Parliament’s nod (cái gật đầu, đồng ý của quốc hội).

If you ever find yourself struggling to catch twenty winks on a transatlantic flight (chuyến bay vượt Đại tây dương), Airsleep for iPhone might just come to the rescue. Airsleep serves up a number of ambient (bao quanh xung quanh) sounds to help cancel out cabin noise, and promises to guide you into the land of candy floss clouds for some slumber (giấc ngủ).

"Sleeping partner" nghĩa là gì?

Ngủ để lại cả một gánh nặng phía sau. Photo by  Anthony Mapp

"Sleeping partner" = Người ngủ chung giường/chung chăn gối -> Người cùng tham gia/hợp tác trong kinh doanh và đặc biệt trong đầu tư tài chính nên họ sẽ có phúc cùng hưởng có họa cùng chịu vì đã chung thuyền vậy đó nhưng họ không cần trực tiếp quản lý hay điều hành mọi việc mỗi ngày.

Ví dụ
Sleeping partner. A sleeping partner who is not involved but is entitled to (có quyền/được phép) a share of the profits may be a huge burden to the remaining partners.

The members said when such an unscrupulous (vô nguyên tắc/vô đạo đức) law firm goes bankrupt (phá sản), the foreigner runs away from the country, leaving the ‘sleeping partner’ to face the music with loads of financial obligations owned to local or foreign banks in the country.

The summit though is a chance for Jensen to share as much as gloat (hả hê, nhìn một cách thèm muốn). ‘We can often talk about stealing ideas (ăn cắp ý tưởng, chất xám) from each other, but it is legal to steal ideas from people in C40,’ he explains. ‘You have to be very active to become a member of the C40. You have to deliver and cannot be a sleeping partner. If you’re a sleeping partner, you’re thrown out of the organisation.’

"Sleep tight" nghĩa là gì?

"Sleep tight" = Một cách nói chúc ai đó ngủ ngon như "Goodnight, night night" nhé các bạn.

Ví dụ
Since then, his daughter, Sam Medeni, has written on Twitter: "Cysga'n dawel dad, caru ti." That translates as: "Sleep tight dad, love you." ...

“Melissa I love you to the moon and back. I will always love you. Goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite. Sweet dreams. I love you.”

Firstly, double the blankets on your bed. Add blankets of the same thermal resistance (giữ ấm) as those you now use. The actual number of blankets is not important so long as the insulating (cách nhiệt) value of the blankets doubles. Do this every night for a week. Sleep tight and sweet dreams!

"Slow march" nghĩa là gì?

Em hãy tin anh! Anh luôn yêu em, chúng ta rồi sẽ đến được với nhau! Photo by Kate Kalvach on Unsplash

"Slow march" (cuộc hành quân chậm rãi) là cụm từ dùng để chỉ một sự phát triển/tiến triển chậm nhưng ổn định và chắc chắn sẽ có hồi kết, sẽ có kết quả cụ thể.

Ví dụ
When we set off (khởi hành) at 10 past six we set off on a slow march to the war memorial (đài tưởng niệm chiến tranh). We walk in complete silence and darkness.

As the UK continues on its slow march to leave the European Union, a London-based startup that enables companies to work internationally has raised a huge round (vòng) of funding from a strategic backer (người ủng hộ/giúp đỡ) to expand its business.

Ever since Trump started talking about leaving the Paris agreement two years ago, the question has been what impact (ảnh hưởng) that will have on the health of the planet. Will countries stick to (trung thành/tuân thủ) the deal and begin the slow march toward a carbon-free economy (nền kinh tế ít thải ra khí carbon), or will they start firing up (đốt cháy/làm nổ) even more coal-fired plants (= coal-fired power station: nhà máy điện nhiệt) and gasoline-powered cars (ô tô chạy bằng xăng)?

Private schools (trường tư) are making hundreds of thousands of pounds from Vietnamese children who are entering Britain on student visas then disappearing, The Times can reveal.

Children as young as 15 are being brought to the UK by suspected  (tình nghi) trafficking (buôn lậu) gangs (băng, nhóm) through legitimate (hợp pháp) visas sponsored (được tài trợ/bảo lãnh) by private schools.

The students typically pay a term’s fees (phí một học kỳ) then go missing within weeks or months of starting at the school. Many disappear into the system and are left at risk of exploitation (bị khai thác) in nail bars (tiệm làm móng), cannabis farms (nông trại trồng cần sa) and brothels (nhà thổ).

"Over-egg the pudding" nghĩa là gì?

Cố quá lại thành quá cố :( Photo by: Tina Rataj-Berard on Unsplash

"Over-egg the pudding" = cho quá nhiều trứng vào bánh pudding -> nghĩa là làm hỏng việc gì hoặc khiến nó trở nên tồi tệ hơn vì làm quá nhiều hoặc cố gắng quá mức (để cải thiện tình hình).

Ví dụ
I must over egg the pudding, no one died and I'm not going hungry or homeless, but it was quite a shock to come home to I must admit (thừa nhận). But amid (ở giữa) the moving of furniture and lifting of rugs I ventured (đánh liều) outside to see what else was happening in the village.

Crusaders supporters welcomed back the horses for the pre-game entertainment last weekend. The crowd loved it, but maybe there's no need to over-egg the pudding. Let the horses do a couple of circuits (đua vòng quanh) before taking a well earned break. Job done.

We can all kick off at ministers and celebrities on social media, yes i tend to (có ý định) over egg the pudding and land myself in hot water. However i saw the photo of the dead crows (con quạ chết; kết thúc điều tồi tệ và là khởi đầu của những điều tốt đẹp) on @ChrisGPackham gate this morning i totally agree with @julierobinson_ its totally the wrong thing to do.

"In the pudding club" nghĩa là gì?

"In the pudding club" = trong câu lạc bộ bánh pudding -> nghĩa là đang mang bầu; trong phim tể tướng lưu gù gọi là 'bánh bao đang làm nhân' đó các bạn :)

Ví dụ
"In the pudding club" is a relative (có liên quan đến) of "up the duff," according to the Oxford Dictionary. The BBC also reported that "the 17th century slang use of pudding to mean a penis (dương vật)" might also have something to do with the idiom. Ya don't say.

He later had to apologise (xin lỗi) to the store manager after his daughter admitted (thừa nhận) that she was in fact in the pudding club.

To be ‘in the pudding club’ still means to be pregnant, and dates to at least the nineteenth century. ‘Up the Duff’ is also pudding related as ‘duff’ has been another name for a sweet pudding since 1828 (and still does if you’re in the navy (hải quân)).
