"Steely-eyed" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Matthias Oberholzer on Unsplash

"Steely-eyed" = mắt ánh thép -> nghĩa là (thể hiện) khuôn mặt cảm xúc mãnh liệt.

Ví dụ
Brown has certainly shed blood, sweat and tears to get to this moment. She’s endured (cam chịu) plenty of personal traumas (tổn thương) – an unstable childhood, the death of her sister, and her mother’s cancer – and anyone else might have closed up shop on pursuing a music career. But this silky-voiced, steely-eyed storyteller only let her pain propel (thúc đẩy) her forward.

You would think that a show called The Witcher would be focused on a witcher, and the good news, it is. The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), a steely eyed warrior as he hunts monsters for money in a mysterious, magical land called “the Continent.”

In that scene he’s just as whiny as the farm boy from Tatooine. But, by the end of Return of the Jedi, Wedge is a steely-eyed ace who barely flinches (nao núng) at the prospect of rocketing into the superstructure (phần ở trên) of the second Death Star and ripping some proton torpedoes.

"Go green on (someone)" = Chống đối ai; giận ai; nổi khùng với ai.

Ví dụ
By some accounts he had been making them for more than 20 years, as an insurance policy should luck go green on him.

While the man sincerely negates (phủ nhận) the officer's comments, it doesn't take much time for the whole town to go green on him.

2019 may, with luck, go down as the year when the tide began to go green on the bizarre (kỳ quái) worldview of transgender activists (người hoạt động chuyển giới).

"Go gathering orange blossoms" nghĩa là gì?

Cấm em Say No! Photo by Drew Coffman

"Go gathering orange blossoms" = Đi lượm hoa màu cam -> Đi tìm vợ (hoa màu cam là hoa được dùng để trang trí nhiều trong các lễ cưới và là biểu tượng về sự trinh trắng của cô dâu).

Ví dụ
The former PS then decided to instead try a Kenyan woman since he wanted a woman he can boss over like his role model. He thus decided to jet back to the country for only a week to go gathering orange blossoms.

Their motive (động cơ, mục đích) to go to Church services was not to worship (tôn thờ) but to go gathering orange blossoms. They felt they had reached the age of marrying, they were done playing and messing around with women in the world, for marriage, they were now looking for born again women who they deem (tưởng rằng, nghĩ rằng) to be wife material (vật chất).

Participants also signed nondisclosure agreements (thỏa thuận không được tiết lộ) prohibiting them from revealing the identity of the bachelor (người chưa có vợ), according to The LDS Matchmaker, with the man giving each of the 20 women a necklace at the June 7 dinner, which included a PowerPoint presentation of the top 10 reasons he opted to go gathering orange blossoms through a matchmaking (ghép đôi, mai mối) event, a four-course meal, group conversation and a five-minute, one-on-one “mini-date" with each participant.

"Go fry an egg" nghĩa là gì?

"Go fry an egg" = Đi chiên trứng đi! -> (thông tục) biến đi/cút đi; để tôi yên!

Ví dụ
Consider this your spoiler warning for the second season of You, folks. If you've not seen it all, go fry an egg. For your sake. Come on. Right.

A high-pitched voice yelling “go fry an egg” was heard by a man the night a woman was murdered in bushland (đất hoang đầy bụi rậm), the Claremont trial has heard.

And if you don’t like it, go fry an egg!” For the uninitiated (không quen, không thạo), crossdressing (trá hình nữ) and androgyny (lưỡng tính) are two very different things. While the former is purely for shows and can be considered art, the latter is all year round with no limits.

"Go for the fences" nghĩa là gì?

"Go for the fences" = Cố hết sức lực, dành hết năng lực cho điều gì; đặt mục tiêu cao và làm bất cứ việc gì để đạt được nó.

Ví dụ
Shekhar says that the feeling among the Precision Health Initiative team is that the work being done now is serving as inspiration for others to "think big and to go for the fences rather than do incremental (lớn, gia tăng) work."

“He threw a fastball high and in, and I went for it,” Sanchez said of his first-inning homer, his second of the season. “We didn’t try to go for the fences. We stayed short, up the middle, working our [opposite- field] approach. That’s what helped us, not trying to do too much.”

“We first heard a lot about quid pro quo and then many people realized that was meaningless,” Stewart said. “So they said, ‘Let’s go for the fences and let’s talk about extortion (sự bóp nặn, tống tiền). Let’s talk about bribery (hối lộ). Let’s talk about cover-up and obstruction (sự phá rối)’ — for which there is zero evidence of any of that.”

"Go for a Burton" nghĩa là gì?

"Go for a Burton" = bị tiêu diệt, bị thất bại, chết.

Ví dụ
Darren Bent has now gone to Burton. Let's hope he doesn't go for a burton like he did at Villa Park.#AVFC paid £24.5m with add-ons, £65,000 a week and he is one of the costliest flops (sự thất bại nặng nhất, đắt giá) in Premier League history.

The Cherries had not fared much better than the Hammers with a two-goal reverse at the Pirelli Stadium in midweek and, having seen their own Carabao Cup challenge go for a Burton, they had also made wholesale changes with only Dominic Solanke keeping his place.

Why would you not want to update, you ask? Simple. Windows updates bork things. With an operating system as huge and unwieldy as Windows, it's inevitable that when you muck about under the hood, you'll stop some drivers functioning, or cause some bespoke  (sản phẩm đặt trước) software to go for a Burton. It's not a judgement on Microsoft, it's just a big ask for it not to happen.

"Go fifty-fifty" nghĩa là gì?

"Go fifty-fifty" = 50-50 đi! -> Chia đôi, chia thành hai phần bằng nhau.

Ví dụ
I was talking to Broxah before the game, we were planning on doing this, 'Okay, when it comes to the Baron, and they go for it, just go fifty-fifty.

One such statement goes to the effect, "We hope China and America will go fifty-fifty in ruling the Pacific." Another: "China will have surpassed (vượt, trội hơn) America in economy and science by 2049."

Urge all good citizens and sportsmen to assist in feeding and taking care of game birds during the heavy snow storm. The game department will go fifty fifty with all sportsmen organizations in paying for feed. Immediate feeding is necessary if much of our wild bird life is conserved (được bảo tồn).

"Go down a bomb" nghĩa là gì?

Kể từ đó cô ấy đã thành người nổi tiếng. Photo by Quinten de Graaf

"Go down a bomb" = Một quả bom rớt xuống -> Trở nên rất thành công và nổi tiếng.

Ví dụ
Nuala first performed the new show at the Open House Festival in Bangor in August and it sold out twice. “It did go down a bomb,” she affirms. “They love me in Bangor for some reason. I just walk out and they all start laughing.

Perhaps even more surprisingly, modern holidaymakers are able to enjoy one of these pastries (bột nhào) – made with mutton (thịt cừu) or lamb, they go down a bomb with a sweet desert (điểm tâm, tráng miệng) wine such as a Muscat or Sauternes – while, like Lord Clive, living in a nearby château (lâu đài).

This idea would go down a bomb in Pudsey. The smell of cannabis (cần sa) on the local High Street can at times be quite overwhelming. Mrs D who does not partake (tham dự, cùng hưởng) in the lovely weed, declined my sincere offer to accompany me on the short trip. Even the prospect of visiting the new Primark store on the Damrack failed to lure (quyến rũ) her.

"Go by the board" nghĩa là gì?

Sự thầm lặng ngoài biển khơi. Photo by  Lochie Blanch

"Go by the board" = Rớt từ trên tàu xuống -> Bị phớt lờ (kế hoạch, ý kiến, chương trình...); thất bại, phí công sức hoặc bị phá hoại.

Ví dụ
I think Sir Lindsay Hoyle will make a good Commons Speaker, but I hope that John Bercow’s legacy of modernisation (hiện đại hóa) and more parliamentary freedom for backbenchers (thành viên của nghị viện Anh, nhưng không giữ trọng trách trong chính phủ) will not go by the board in an effort to ameliorate (cải thiện, làm tốt hơn) the somewhat divisive tenure of Bercow.

The worry that maybe a child’s needs are not being met often leads to an attempt to compensate (bồi thường) in some way and what children want gets mixed up with what children need. Mothers who are away all day say they don’t want to be disciplinarians (người chấp hành kỷ luật) during the limited time they have with their children. But their wish not to say “no” can lead to too many yeses. Sometimes appropriate expectations, such as bedtime, go by the board.

In a fight against evil, restraint (sự giam giữ) and ethical norms tend to go by the board. The U.S. opened a prison camp at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba; hundreds of men were taken there and held, often for years, most without being charged; a number were subjected to torture (tra tấn). A network of secret prisons and torture sites was also established around the globe. (President Obama ended the C.I.A.’s torture program by executive order in January of 2009.)

"Go around Robin Hood's barn" nghĩa là gì?

À ơi...quanh co đi kiếm cỏ. Photo by  Jakub Kriz

"Go around Robin Hood's barn" = Đi quanh chuồng ngựa của Robin Hood -> Đi đường dài và quanh co.

Ví dụ
“We just kind of gently guide them and tell them: this is the problem," Almarode explains. "We have a driving question, which is a problem they have to solve, and they can go around Robin Hood’s barn to solve it.”

The European Union simply sets the maximum amount of tailpipe emissions (khí thải ống bô) allowed per kilometer and is done with it. The US actually does much the same thing with diesel emissions, so why go all around Robin Hood’s barn with complex fuel economy schemes? What a waste of time and energy.

“General Hospital” seems to be going around Robin Hood's barn where Chase and Lulu are concerned and fans are wondering if they will fall in love or not. Many viewers believed that the police detective (trinh thám) would comfort his partner’s wife and help her through grief (nỗi đau) over the end of her marriage. Instead, for months now, Willow has been monopolizing (chiếm lĩnh, giữ độc quyền) Chase’s time, all the while growing closer to Michael. While the Falconeri marriage hangs in limbo (nhà tù), “Lace” has had a few brief encounters and fans wonder what it means, if anything.

"Go about your work" nghĩa là gì?

Sếp gương mẫu. Photo by Bethany Legg

"Go about your work" = Làm một số việc hoặc nhiệm vụ.

Ví dụ
“How to be a professional, how to go about your work, how to go about everyday life. This isn't easy. You have to make a regimen (chế độ) for yourself.

Over time, a consistent lack of sleep can be dangerous, as the effects are similar to being intoxicated (say sưa, ngất ngây) as you go about your work and life.

How does some aspect of your identity influence the way you go about your work? My father is my role model — a thoughtful, compassionate, disciplined public leader of the highest integrity who exemplified (minh họa bằng thí dụ) the best of the Republican Party of his day. He said to me once that the GOP was at its best as the party of reform (cải cách, cải tạo). It saddens me that the party has left people like him behind.

"The world and his wife" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Markus Spiske on Unsplash

"The world and his wife" = cả thế giới và vợ anh ta -> nghĩa là rất đông người, nhất là ở một thời điểm hoặc địa điểm cụ thể.

Ví dụ
Now the signs (biển hiệu) have done their job and the world and his wife knows how much he loves her, the couple (cặp đôi) are going to display pictures of their dogs.

At common sense level, the Scottish judges were right. The world and his wife know that Johnson’s purpose in proroguing (gián đoạn) Parliament was to get rid of pesky MPs in the run-up to October 31. It does not seem to have done him much good.

Such a good man. He was mocked all those years ago for his foresight (thấy trước) on the environment and now the world and his wife are all on the bandwagon.

"Honeymoon phase" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Roberto Nickson on Unsplash

"Honeymoon phase" = giai đoạn/thời kỳ trăng mật -> nghĩa là giai đoạn khởi đầu êm đềm của một mối quan hệ, hoạt động hoặc công việc khi chưa có bất cứ khó khăn trở ngại nào.

Ví dụ
No relationship is without its challenges, especially when the honeymoon phase ends. But if you practice mindfulness (lưu tâm) exercises, you'll be able to successfully get past (vượt qua) them.

There are plenty of romantic (lãng mạn) love songs you can send your partner during the honeymoon phase that will say, "Hey, I'm into you, but Shawn Mendes can tell you how I feel better than I can," and I've rounded the best ones up for you.

AEW is planning for the future, but the honeymoon phase is over. 2020’s debut episode from Daily’s Place was a great example of the kind of show they need to continue presenting. It seems like they have no plans for the future except to carry on.

"Go through a phase" nghĩa là gì?

"Go through a phase" = đi qua giai đoạn -> nghĩa là trải qua những thay đổi tạm thời, phát triển hoặc biến động bất thường.

Ví dụ
However the year on year revenue (thu nhập) growth of 7.7% would help. Many businesses do go through a phase where they have to forgo (bỏ) some profits to drive business development, and sometimes its for the best.

Whether it’s dinosaurs, dolls, cars or princesses, most preschoolers (trẻ mẫu giáo) go through a phase where they’re obsessed (ám ảnh) with something. For 4-year-old Jeremiah Ghantous, it’s delivery truck drivers.

He points out that the children who grow up to be elite athletes “typically devote less time early on to deliberate (trao đổi) practice in the activity in which they will eventually become experts.” Instead, they go through a phase of trying out a bunch of different sports (in researcher-speak, a “sampling period”) and eventually focus on the one they’re best suited to.
