"Come on too strong" nghĩa là gì?

"Come on (too) strong" = Qúa cứng nhắc/nặng nề -> Rất hiếu chiến/hung hăng; tán tỉnh người ta quá đà/thúc ép; trở nên rất phổ biến.

Ví dụ
"We hope this doesn’t come on too strong, but our landlord won't allow pets, and we've all grown up with animals. The adult life is a struggle without one,” they concluded, signing the pitch "the boys from number 23."

You might be worried this morning, but it will pass quickly. (Especially if you drink a lot of water.) Later in the day, financial issues might concern you. Don’t make a big deal about anything. Take it easy because Mars in your sign can make you come on too strong. Whoa Nellie!

If you have your ex there for the talk, it is my hope that she too will buy in and cooperate in facilitating your visitation as a requirement rather than an option. Feel free to explain to the kids that a court order is not optional for them, meaning their refusal to follow the schedule could be deemed “incorrigible” (không thể sửa được) and subject to juvenile criminal sanctions (trừng phạt tội phạm ở tuổi vị thành niên) if it went that far. Nor is it optional for their mother who could get into serious trouble with the court if she intentionally disobeys the court order. Don’t come on too strong at first, however, or you may push them further away. I just wanted to give you some real legal consequences to their actions to help you if needed.

"Garbage mouth" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by sebastiaan stam on Unsplash

"Garbage mouth" = mồm đầy rác -> cụm từ này nghĩa là ai đó toàn sử dụng ngôn ngữ tục tĩu, lời nói manh tính xúc phạm cao.

Ví dụ
While Griggs declined to comment at the meeting, he later voiced regret on his Facebook page, apologizing to both Woodson and Green by name. In part he wrote, “To all that witnessed my garbage mouth and temperament (tính khí), I sincerely apologize.”

That lack of precision (độ chính xác) elicited from Boas one of those blue streaks of language for which he was to become famous during the campaign—the former city chief administrative officer who had solved the city’s garbage crisis was a garbage mouth.

In “The Clintons’ War on Women,” Roger Stone and Robert Morrow dedicate an entire chapter to presumed profanities from the Clintons, almost all of them coming from Hillary, almost all of them involving F-bombs. (No one around her is safe from her “garbage mouth,” apparently; it strafes a village.)

"Make (grab) headlines" = lên trang nhất -> trở nên nổi tiếng vì được nhiều báo tường thuật.

Ví dụ
The problems-from bad backs to carpal tunnel syndrome (hội chứng ống cổ tay) to headaches-have made the headlines of every health magazine in the country.

But the technology just started to break through to the mainstream (trào lưu) a few years ago. Nintendo's Pokemon GO mobile game showed the world what AR can do for gaming when it was released in 2016. The app made headlines for having people walk around trying to catch digital creatures standing in the real world on a mobile screen.

As the US-China talks “pause” their tariff conflict, and other bilateral (song phương) trade relations such as US-Japan and US-India continue to grab headlines at the recent G20 Leaders’ Summit in Osaka, we may look back at another Asian nation leaders’ summit of the ten Southeast Asia nations (ASEAN) in Bangkok, Thailand in June as the summit which made an even bigger impact on the future of Asia’s role in global trade.

"Smile (grin) from ear to ear" = cười hở tận mang tai -> nụ cười lớn.

Ví dụ
All of the medal winners were smiling from ear to ear during the award ceremony.

Over the years, the general consensus (nhất trí) has been that there are two Adam Sanders in the movies. One is the former SNL star who turned juvenile (trẻ trung) comedy into his brand (thương hiệu), with movies such as Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, and Grown-Ups. Critics usually sneer (nhạo báng) at these, while Sandler’s fans smile from ear to ear.

In a move that will no doubt delight (làm vui thích) slightly older gamers, Tick Tock not only requires verbal communication between players; there are multiple sections of the game that actually require note-taking in order to solve specific mysteries. It’s a wonderful throwback to puzzle games from the '90s, and while you can probably circumvent (tránh sự hạn chế) this somewhat with the Switch’s screenshot feature, it’s nevertheless an excellent addition that made us grin from ear to ear.

"Crack a smile" -> mỉm cười.

Ví dụ
The national men’s doubles pair of Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik made it into their first quarter-final of the year at the Indonesian Masters – but they can hardly crack a smile.

Over the centuries, theologians (chuyên gia thần học) have wrestled (vật lộn) with many knotty (nan giải) questions, such as: Does God exist? What is the purpose of life? And why do innocent people suffer? A layperson (tín đồ) might suppose (nghĩ rằng) theology, the study of God, to be so serious that theologians never crack a smile.

Simon Cowell sure was cranky (quàu quạu) during the Season 2 premiere of “America’s Got Talent: The Champions.” After all, he gave a red “X” to two acts: entertainer Hans and stand-up comedian Dan Naturman. However, Hans’ snarky (ác ý) comment following Simon’s buzzer actually caused the British judge to crack a smile: “You know what, Simon? When you let me back, I’ll come and sing, ‘I Dreamed a Dream’!” That was of course a reference (ám chỉ) to Susan Boyle, the former “Britain’s Got Talent” superstar who popped up in last year’s “AGT: The Champions” and sang her classic song for American audiences.

"Come into prominence" = Trở nên nổi tiếng, có được sự công nhận và danh tiếng.

Ví dụ
Accountability coaching has come into prominence in recent years. If you have a major resolution like writing a book or a major lifestyle overhaul (xem xét toàn bộ, kiểm tra kỹ lưỡng, sửa đổi), you may want to consider hiring one. There are many different types of accountability coaches and programs depending on what your needs are.

IOTA tokens are being widely used in many concepts and solutions within the Internet of Things (IoT). IOTA has come into prominence with the rapid development of this technology. Corporations that want to explore the Internet of Things have widely accepted IOTA. This year, the IOTA tokens were also mentioned in patents by Siemens AG, Blackberry Telecom, and Intel Corporation. Presently, around 44 companies have applied for 111 patents.

In the realm (lĩnh vực) of gaming, a decade is such a huge amount of time. You can see massive leaps and bounds across ten years. You can see the rise and fall of franchises. Whole sub-genres of games come into prominence and be abused to all-hell in just a few mere years. The most interesting aspect is where you see the turning point of a particular series or even genre. Both Strategy and Simulation games have seen this very turning point over the previous ten years, with long-running stalwarts being joined by fantastic newcomers with more than a few surprise entrants (người mới vào).

"Come home by Weeping Cross" = Về nhà ôm khóc cây thánh giá/về nhà theo đường Weep Cross -> Đau khổ, than khóc chịu tang. Câu thành ngữ này không chỉ được dùng khi có tang quyến mà còn được dùng khi có điều gì làm bạn thất vọng.

Ví dụ
Devastating images have captured the moment a singed koala appears to come home by Weeping Cross for the death of its companion after a wildfire decimated their Kangaroo Island habitat (môi trường sống).

The vigil (lễ vọng, sự thức) on Wednesday night was the second one organized for Vergara Juarez this week. More than a hundred people showed up to the vigil Wednesday to come home by Weeping Cross for the death of their friend and family.

"Whilst I come home by Weeping Cross that Flybe has confirmed its decision to switch its London route from Newquay back to Gatwick I do accept the reasons for this. "I appreciate many will be disappointed at losing the link to Heathrow and I share their disappointment.

"Come down to the line" = Gần phút chót mới quyết định được kết quả cuộc đua; thắng thua với khoảng cách sát nút; chiến đấu cho đến phút cuối.

Ví dụ
“A lot of it will come down to the line play.” Hope Christian QB Collin Evans has had a big season with 27 TD passes and only four picks.

“There is a reason why they have been as consistently successful as they have been under coach (Bill) Cherpak. I think it will come down to the line play on both sides of the ball.”

No matter what else you talk about, Wednesday's Rose Bowl is very likely going to come down to the line of scrimmage (cuộc chiến đấu, thời gian ngừng bóng). Oregon and Wisconsin consider themselves physical teams with solid line play on both sides of the ball and the battle of the big guys is going to be brutal (cục súc, tàn bạo).

"Come by honestly" nghĩa là gì?

Test thử máy ảnh mới được tặng. Photo by  Kendra Kamp

"Come (something) by honestly" = Có/sở hữu được điều gì một cách chính đáng và trung thực; sở hữu một đặc điểm nào đó giống bố mẹ.

Ví dụ
In Wayan’s defense, it’s a concept that the owners come by honestly: they are Cédric Vongerichten—who is the chef de cuisine (ẩm thực) at Perry St, in the West Village, which is owned by his father, the French chef and restaurateur Jean-Georges Vongerichten—and his wife, Ochi, who is Indonesian. But it’s unclear what “modern French flair” is, exactly, and what, if anything, it does for Indonesian cuisine.

Most people at this point, new to the sub-continent (tiểu lục địa), do not ask how much this will cost – they just want that disgusting mess cleaned off. The cost might be a 100-200 rupees(NZ$2-$4) not a big deal to us, but considering that the shoe shine man himself has dropped his special gloop (but not poop) on the shoe himself (usually as the tourist get to the top of the stairs and is looking around to get their bearings) it's money he has not come by honestly.

Hailing (hoan nghênh, đổ dồn xuống) from Bend Oregon, Micah Peterson, AKA Second Son, is truly the second son of an Indiana Preacher Man and the songwriting force that when coupled with his backing band, The Rain Dogs, is a legit Alt-Country/Americana Band. Where so many Country Music Artists’ drawl seems like an affectation, Micah Peterson’s vocals feel naturally crisp and clear, as if he is effortlessly able to sit in the pocket where so many modern-country singers fail. This and heart-felt songwriting are the backbone (xương sống, trụ cột, sức mạnh) of Second Son and the Rain Dogs. The sound is authentic (chính cống) and lived in, as if the miles of hard road songs, were come by honestly.

"Come as no surprise" = Không ngạc nhiên/bất ngờ cả.

Ví dụ
The continuing decline in diesel car sales in 2019 should come as no surprise following the negative publicity around the fuel and the rising interest in alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), says UK Fuels.

It's no secret that Vanderbilt's Austin Martin is one of the top college baseball players in the nation, so it should also come as no surprise that he is on the shortlist for most every award available for position players/hitters in the sport for the 2020 season.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise that Penn Badgley’s romance-obsessed stalker-turned-serial killer, Joe, in Netflix’s You is the object of the Internet’s affection. With his nerdy penchant (thiên hướng, sở thích) for books and lovelorn obsession (sự ám ảnh việc bị tình phụ bạc) with chivalry (tinh thần thượng võ, hiệp sĩ) — to the point of murder — Joe’s significant quirks (thói quen, tật) both twee (đa cảm quá mức) and sinister (nham hiểm, mang điềm xấu) have fascinated fans online.

"Be the shape of things to come" = Hình ảnh/dấu hiệu của điều gì trong tương lai; dấu hiệu của điều gì sẽ xảy ra và trở nên phổ biến (điềm báo).

Ví dụ
This role of“go-between” could be the shape of things to come for any British Foreign Secretary in the post-Brexit political landscape.

Is this oblong (có hình thuôn, chữ nhật) chip the future of Intel’s desktop CPUs? Two renowned leakers have tweeted about a potential Intel LGA 1700 socket, a stretched out socket that would mark a departure from Intel’s tried and tested square chips. While this remains largely conjecture (phỏng đoán, ước đoán) at this point, the socket is suspected to be the shape of things to come with Intel’s Alder Lake CPUs, likely the first desktop generation built upon the company’s 10nm process node.

“When Mr. Picardo takes a reference directly out of a wartime speech from Winston Churchill, what exactly is he trying to say? Does he want to prepare us all for war? Does he want to inflame (đốt cháy) passions on both sides of the border? Does he want to highlight his role as the defender of our national pride? And most importantly, is it good for Gibraltar for our Chief Minister to issue statements of this nature? Does it strengthen our position in future negotiations (cuộc đàm phán)? Does it express our moral high ground in respect of our legal claim against VOX? Who benefits from all this? Populist parties feed off each other’s rhetoric in a race to the extremes while silent majorities get caught in the middle, and I am afraid that this might be the shape of things to come over the next four years.”

"A portent of things to come" nghĩa là gì?

"A portent of things to come" = Một điềm báo/điềm xấu của điều gì đến -> Dấu hiệu chỉ điều gì đó sẽ xảy ra và được nhiều người biết đến.

Ví dụ
Traralgon was the scene for Federer's second ITF triumph and while it would be Jeanpierre who bounced back to seal the Australian Open boys crown, success in the Latrobe Valley would be a portent of things to come.

Was there a portent of things to come in race four at Maitland greyhounds (xe buýt chạy đường dài) on Thursday afternoon when the Allen Williams-trained Latrell to Excel jumped out of the No.1 box as the $2.50 favourite?

But are the flowering blooms a reaction to unusually mild weather, a symbol of climate change and a portent of things to come- or is the tree merely a species which defies (thách thức, bất chấp) the normal rules for when it should blossom?

"A one-way street" = đường một chiều -> nghĩa là tình huống hoặc thỏa thuận mà chỉ một bên có lợi, có quyền kiểm soát.

Ví dụ
But any decision that’s made, it’s not an individual (cá nhân) decision. There are other people involved, so there has to be some type of communication, understanding, agreement, whatever you want to call it, and that’s not a one-way street. I hope you can understand that.

But let today's godforsaken escalation (leo thang) remind everyone there is no free lunch and indeed never a one-way street when it comes to risk. Stocks tanked, yields (lợi nhuận) plummeted (tụt dốc), Gold rallied shortly afterward.

After all, it’s been a one-way street for the stock market since October 11th the day President Trump first announced (thông báo) a deal with China.

"Boat comes in" nghĩa là gì?

"(One's) ship/boat comes in" = Khi thuyền ai đến -> Là khi ai đó thành đạt và giàu có.

Ví dụ
“We used to take the kids and walk between our house and the Coffee Emporium, and we’d always walk down this street,” Russell said. “I’d say, ‘Honey, when my boat comes in, we’ll live on this street. But you pick the house.’”

Portsmouth admit they want to sign former Newcastle United striker Mark Viduka - when his boat comes in. The Australia international was released by Newcastle following their relegation to the Championship. But Pompey executive chairman Peter Storrie confirmed they would be interested in Viduka.

I blame William Crapo Durant, the man behind General Motors. He was the guy who said, if you make X number of dollars, you buy a Chevrolet, and once you start earning more money, Mr. Chevy Man, why don't you move up to an Oakland, or, heck, even a Buick? Maybe, just maybe, if your ship comes in, one day that big, fat Cadillac could be yours. GM got so nuts with slicing and reslicing the pricing pie that it launched four "companion make" brands—Pontiac, Viking, Marquette, and LaSalle—to fill in the gaps between the original four. Curiously, upstart Pontiac survived while the other three plus Oakland didn't. Until Pontiac didn't, either.

"Two-way street" = đường hai chiều -> nghĩa là tình huống mà cả hai bên phải cùng nỗ lực thì mới đạt được kết quả như mong muốn.

Ví dụ
According to the report, the Kremlin is still extremely displeased (bực mình), however. with Israel’s extradition of a Russian hacker to the U.S. late last year. “We wanted this process to be be a two-way street,” a Russian official told the outlet. The report in the Russian media comes hours after Putin spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone.

Julia’s host mother is Jennifer Smith, who so happens to also be a Spanish teacher at the high school. She says this experience for her has been a two-way street. “She has already given us some food, some treats from Spain. She bought us a recipe (công thức nấu ăn) book where we can make sauces,” Smith said.

I feel like player acquisition (đạt được) and coaching instruction is a two-way street. I think if you have a system of defense where you need a certain player to fit your scheme (kế hoạch), you're limiting your personnel (nhân sự) department (lĩnh vực).

"All things come to those who wait" nghĩa là gì?

How long I will wait for you? Photo by  maxime caron

"All things come to those who wait" = Kiên nhẫn chờ đợi thì mọi điều sẽ đến với mình -> Những người đủ kiên nhẫn thì sẽ có được những điều xứng đáng.

Ví dụ
“It's long overdue (quá chậm, quá hạn). There is one person in Hollywood I've always wanted to work with and learn from, and so all things come to those who wait.”.

All things come to those who wait, and such was the case with Chloe Kunar and Jeremy Whitlow. In 2012, they felt an immediate connection while on a blind double date. They couldn’t resist sharing a kiss but acknowledged they weren’t at a good spot for a whirlwind romance (mối tình đến một cách chóng vánh). They kept it casual, going on a date here and there, but neither divulged (tiết lộ) their true feelings for the other.

The two most powerful warriors (chiến binh mạnh mẽ) are patience and time”, wrote Russian author Leo Tolstoy. As the famous saying goes, all things come to those who wait long enough. Yet, patience is a virtue (đức tính tốt) that not all of us are blessed with. It is a lifelong spiritual practice as well as a way to find emotional freedom .It is the ability to keep calm in the face of disappointment, distress or suffering. The virtue is associated with a variety of positive health outcomes, such as reducing depression and other toxic emotions (cảm xúc tiêu cực, độc hại). Patient people are found to exhibit more social virtues like empathy, and also more likely to display generosity and compassion (sự khoan hồng và lòng trắc ẩn/lòng thương).

"The best things come in small packages" nghĩa là gì?

Will you marry me? Photo by jesse ramirez

"The best/good things come in small packages" = Chiếc gói nhỏ thường chứa đựng những điều tốt đẹp nhất -> Kích cỡ của cái gì không nói lên giá trị của nó; những cái tốt đẹp nhất/chất lượng nhất và có giá trị thì thường rất nhỏ bé và đơn giản.

Ví dụ
Malta, a jewel in the heart of the Mediterranean (viên ngọc quý giữa lòng/trong tim của Mediterranean) , proves the best things come in small packages. Karen Murray visited the island which is the smallest country in EU.

But the truth is being somewhat vertically challenged can’t stop a person from achieving what they want in life. In fact, sometimes the best things come in small packages. And there is a whole list of pint-sized celebrities to prove it!

You have to spend money to hold money and Masuku hasn’t held back when it comes to his Louis Vuitton “key pouch”. The small wallet which Masuku attaches to his shorts with the included chain comes in at a hefty R3k. Sometimes the best things come in small packages, and this Louis Vuitton pouch is no exception. Made in Spain, the exterior is printed with the iconic Louis Vuitton iconography (sự mô tả bằng tranh, hình tượng) and the inside is lined with leather.

"Come back to the fold" nghĩa là gì?

"Come back to the fold" = Trở về với gia đình -> Bắt đầu tham gia, hỗ trợ và gia nhập lại nhóm/tổ chức/lĩnh vực mà mình đã bỏ trong một thời gian.

Ví dụ
In the political arena, rejoicing for those who come back to the fold sounds strange, but it is the only way that makes long-term sense.

I appeal to this individual to come back to the fold, the racing is poorer without your input. Come back, and then we can sing about you!

Regarding “A ridiculously optimistic look at the next decade,” (A12, Jan. 8): David Brooks presents a view of the next decade that I would love to believe to be real. Trump’s followers come back to the fold of caring humanity. Social repair is the priority of the country. Empathy replaces antipathy (ác cảm). Religion seeks grace (ân điển). White privilege gives way to the larger American family that can see each other as whole, human and deserving of opportunity. Our broken international alliances (khối liên minh quốc tế) are restored to normalcy (sự bình thường).

"Come down to us" nghĩa là gì?

"Come down to us" = Đã tồn tại từ xa xưa/từ rất lâu và cho đến hiện tại.

Ví dụ
Some of our old garden favourites have interesting pasts that have come down to us through the ages and add a special charm to them. Many were used for their medicinal, culinary (nấu nướng) and perfumery properties (nguồn cung cấp nguyên liệu cho các xưởng chế nước hoa) while others held religious and superstitious (mê tín) significance.

Chief Seattle’s famous speech at an 1854 treaty conference (hội nghị về hiệp định) was translated, transcribed and probably later augmented by a white man for white audiences. As that speech has come down to us, it reminds us of the perpetual (mãi mãi, vĩnh viễn) presence of the past, and of the resilience (sự kiên cường, bền lâu) and importance of the Salish peoples who lived here first and helped create the city we live in.

According to a brief comment, Cicero predates the Goths. Why? Cicero lived in the first century BCE, while the Goths were noticed by Roman historians in the first century CE. Surely, unbeknownst to each other, the Goths as an identifiable tribe were at least as old as Cicero. We don’t know whether they spoke a language nearly identical to the one that has come down to us (Bishop Wulfila’s fourth-century Gothic), but this is beside the point.

"Come down on the side of" nghĩa là gì?

"Come down/out on the side of (someone or something) = Đứng về bên ai/cái gì; sau khi cân nhắc cẩn thận thì đưa ra ý kiến ủng hộ và chọn ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Privacy advocates have won the argument in this document. It’s worth noting that the ECJ has repeatedly come down on the side of individual rights over governmental assertions (sự xác nhận, khẳng định) when it comes to digital data, so this opinion is likely to become legally binding when the full court considers it.

San Francisco based Victor Sher of Sher Edling has been representing Rhode Island in the legal feud (mối hận thù), while Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher attorney Ted Boutrous is representing the oil industry. Sher has gained support from several state attorneys including California attorney general Xavier Becerra. Yet, many states, such as Texas and Georgia, have come down on the side of the defendants (bị cáo) and are pushing for federal preemption (quyền ưu tiên).

The struggle has been accepting that I can’t make every meal from scratch — not with a family, work and maybe just a tiny bit of time devoted to stuff like exercising, folding laundry and folding more laundry. Dinners are already almost all cooked by my husband or me, so after that, I have to pick breakfast or lunch. Obviously, I’ve come down on the side of breakfast for now. A hearty breakfast pushes lunch forward and makes it okay to eat a lighter midday meal, even if it’s just yogurt and fruit. Plus, I have the advantage of the Food Lab, where my colleagues and I are cooking something almost every day of the week.

"Come in and sit a spell" = Vào trong và ngồi nghỉ một lát (Khi mời ai đó vào chỗ nào để thư giãn)

Ví dụ
He had a sign from the old check-out conveyor belt (băng chuyền), and even the push handle to the store door. He has made a spot inside where someone could come in and sit a spell to play guitar, if they would like to. Or you can come in and enjoy a coffee, buy a lottery ticket, and sit outside to scratch it, to see if you won! He has a table out there just for that!

A new tapas (món ăn mặn Tây ban Nha) bar is open in downtown Macon, and one of the owners says he’s ready for folks to come in and sit a spell. Lazy Susan’s Tapas Bar, located at 428 Second Street, had a soft opening in November 2019. Co-owner and manager Ryan Smith said he was inspired to open this eclectic, mid-century modern spot after he went out to dinner with his wife and noticed a lot of patrons (khách quen) were on their phones during the meal.

During any other month the act of showing up at your neighbor’s door to sing would elicit (moi ra) a raised eyebrow; in December it has a good chance of being met with a smile and maybe even an invitation to come in and sit a spell. So grab some friends, hit the streets (or maybe the office hallway), and do some caroling. And when the new year comes, consider one or more of the following additional suggestions for rediscovering the joy of singing.

For four seasons, Kristen Bell created a lovable garbage person with Eleanor on The Good Place. While alive, most of Eleanor’s behavior justified her ending up in the bad place.

Just as a team’s victory shouldn’t be an excuse to cause mayhem (tình trạng lộn xộn) and destroy property in the name of celebration, a tough loss and bad officiating shouldn’t be an excuse to act like a garbage person.
