"The soul of discretion" nghĩa là gì?

Giờ chả tin được ai, tin mấy cái khóa. Photo by: Martha Dominguez de Gouveia on Unsplash

"The soul of discretion" = con người thận trọng -> nghĩa là người đáng tin tưởng, biết giữ bí mật.

Ví dụ
He remained the soul of discretion about these matters, but I understood that as well as sustaining (chống đỡ) a network of contacts with poets and art activists across Europe and Latin America, my guide was a shadowy adviser on the legalities of the endless Brexit non-negotiations.

It’s fair to say she is rather to fascinated (mê hoặc) by the lives of her fellow townsfolk (dân thị xã). To put it less charitably, she is an inveterate (lâu năm) gossip. She makes Dot Cotton look like the soul of discretion.

Camilla is very personable (xinh đẹp), and her closed oval means that she's the soul of discretion. Charles is a little more self-conscious than his wife, because his oval is slightly squeezed.

"Take a ride to Tyburn" nghĩa là gì?

"Take a ride to Tyburn" = chở đến thành Tyburn -> nghĩa là bị đưa đi thi hành án tử hình, thường là bị treo cổ.

Ví dụ
Before he left the visitation room to take a ride to Tyburn, Springer asked him one more time if he had killed Wendy Kae Robinson. “He said, ‘I hadn’t killed anybody other than the ones we discussed.”

It’s such a unique experience to work a case, go overseas (ra nước ngoài), capture somebody, bring him back, get his confession—and then to take a ride to Tyburn. It has a lot of elements that I’ve never had before in one case—and probably won’t again.

A stone memorial can be seen on the pavement marking the spot where the Tyburn Tree, its distinctive (đặc biệt, phân biệt) three-sided gallows (giá treo cổ), once stood. The design meant multiple hangings could be carried out at once, such as on June 23, 1649, when 24 prisoners were hanged simultaneously, having been conveyed there in eight carts. You can get a sense of the chaos of the crowds attending these events in Hogarth’s etching The Idle Apprentice. Oliver Cromwell's exhumed body was, symbolically, hanged at Tyburn in 1661. Several euphemism (cách uyển ngữ) reflect Tyburn’s grisly (ghê tởm, rùng rợn) role in London life, including to “take a ride to Tyburn” and to “dance the Tyburn jig”.

"Charge it to the dust and let the rain settle it" nghĩa là gì?

"Charge it to the dust and let the rain settle it" = đưa hóa đơn cho bụi và để mưa xoá hết nó (để mưa thanh toán cho) -> đây là một thành ngữ có tính đùa cợt rất thú vị để trả lời những câu hỏi như "ai sẽ trả tiền đây?"; hoặc ai đó muốn quỵt tiền.

Ví dụ
Me: Are you willing to pay this beer? Him: charge it to the dust and let the rain settle it, please!

Samuel: You wil pay for dinner tonight, right? Tony: Oh, just charge it to the dust and let the rain settle it!

"Charge it to the dust and let the rain settle it" is a humorous saying for those who don't expect to pay for something.

“A reed before the wind lives on, while mighty oaks do fall” nghĩa là gì?

“A reed before the wind lives on, while mighty oaks do fall” = cây sậy vẫn đứng một mình trước gió, khi những cây sồi cứng cáp lại đổ hết. -> nghĩa là người linh hoạt và dễ thích ứng thì sẽ tồn tại, chịu được khó khăn và gian nan tốt hơn so với những người cứ cố gắng chống lại sự khó khăn.

Ví dụ
The exercise was ultimately a success and demonstrates why working remotely with your selection of clever, intuitive tools can be awesome! Remote working can’t completely replace personal interaction, but much like the reed in the wind, being flexible across all aspects of a development process means your project is less likely to break in a storm.

As I said in a recent blog, the genie is out of the bottle: it is nonsense to assert that it is either safe, sustainable or desirable for the hundreds of millions of white collar jobs now being carried out at home to be returned to the office environment. This is, for want of a less over-used phrase, the new normal.

“A reed before the wind lives on, while mighty oaks do fall.” The Oak and the Reed, a fable written thousands of years ago, tells the story of two trees in a storm. One is a great oak which battles the wind, stands firm and breaks. The other, a reed, bends and moves with the wind and eventually survives the storm. The maelstrom (tình trạng hết sức rối loạn) of change unleashed upon the business community by the pandemic compares is both real and lasting.

“Throw discretion to the wind” nghĩa là gì?

“Throw discretion to the wind” = vứt thận trọng cho gió cuốn đi -> nghĩa là liều thực hiện, hành động không cẩn trọng và cứ tùy ý làm.

Ví dụ
Laura Linney is usually cast as a neurotic (dễ xúc cảm, loạn thần kinh chức năng), inhibited woman who is more than a little uptight (bồn chồn, lo lắng). Which might explain why the 48-year-old actress savors the occasional chance to throw discretion to the wind.

There have been rumors floating around for a while now that Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are dating, but they have been just that: rumors. Perry and Bloom did not throw discretion to the wind and start displaying their status as a couple in public until very recently.

“That was controversial (bàn cãi, tranh luận) within the IRB, because nobody really knows Pearse and those that do know he’s a former home ruler and they don’t know where he stands. But Clark fought strongly for Pearse; he thought he could be the youthful face of republicanism (chủ nghĩa cộng hòa). He said to him, 'Make your speech as hot as hell; throw discretion to the wind’.

“Wind back the clock” nghĩa là gì?

“Wind back the clock” có wind là lên dây cót đồng hồ -> cụm từ này nghĩa là quay ngược lại thời gian, dòng lịch sử.

Ví dụ
There's a catch, however: the successful bidder must promise to sell at least 100 affordable units to Ottawa Community Housing within seven years. "Affordable housing available to the masses in your city core becomes impossible in time as land values increase and you have less land available," said Cliff Youdale, chief development officer of Ottawa Community Housing. "I'm sure if Vancouver and Toronto could wind back the clock they'd love to do things a whole lot differently."

To commemorate (kỷ niệm, tưởng nhớ) the loss of the 2020 summer league season, the STF guys wind back the clock and reminisce (nhớ lại, hồi tưởng) on some of their best and worst summer league experiences. Plenty of great listener emails about favorite league moments, team names, and weird stories make a surprisingly cogent (có sức thuyết phục) argument about the importance of summer league to us all.

"Right now in Jefferson County, we are seeing an uptick (dấu kiểm cộng, kiểm kê) in Lyme Disease, especially the last several years. If we can wind back the clock around 10 years, we had no Lyme Disease in Jefferson County and in the last 8 or 9 years, we have seen an uptick almost every year. Just in my small practice in Jefferson County, I’ve seen four or five cases in the last 2 weeks.

“Twist slowly in the wind” nghĩa là gì?

“Twist (slowly) in the wind” = bị gió cuốn dần -> nghĩa là rơi vào tình cảnh khó khăn và rắc rối (thường là bị phê bình, trừng phạt).

Ví dụ
Appointed to the Conciliation and Arbitration Commission by the Whitlam government in 1975, Staples' penchant (thiên hướng) for colourful language and a sometimes unconventional approach to dispute resolution quickly led to controversy (cuộc bàn cãi, tranh luận). In a dispute between BHP and the Seaman's Union, he offended the company by saying: "Let them, then, twist slowly in the wind, dead and despised..."

All but a bro-hug. About watching Romney recant (công khai rút lui và từ bỏ) and twist slowly in the wind, former Speaker Newt Gingrich said, "You have never, ever, in your career seen a wealthy adult who is independent, has been a presidential candidate, suck up at the rate that Mitt Romney is sucking up," adding that "Every day they let this thing hang out there it becomes harder and more expensive to pick Romney."

Investigators also found an array (hàng loạt) of messages against Trump on the social media accounts of Clinesmith, including one declaring “vive le resistance” after Trump won. Meanwhile, throughout this period, the FBI was leaking aplenty but no one leaked the Page was actually a CIA asset. Instead, he was left to twist slowly in the wind. Media reports all but convicted Page of being a Russian spy. Evan Hurst wrote about him last year asking, “Why the hell are Republicans dying on this hill to defend Carter Page,” whom Hurst described, in all caps, as “a literal actual Russian intelligence asset.”

“Sow the wind and reap the whirlwind” nghĩa là gì?

“Sow the wind and reap the whirlwind” = gieo gió gặt bão -> nghĩa là làm điều ác, điều xấu và dại dột thì sẽ có kết cục rất tệ, ắt sẽ gặp hậu quả.

Ví dụ
The various public gaffes (sai lầm, lầm lỗi) drew numerous comparisons to spoof (nhại lại, trò lừa bịp) radio host Alan Partridge. But some has said Mr Inverdale was being treated unfairly. “Live broadcasting is an unforgiving arena and it is all too easy for the mouth to outsprint the brain,” wrote The Telegraph’s Rob Bagchi. “In this social media environment one mis-step is enough to destroy a reputation (danh tiếng) and career. You sow the wind and reap the whirlwind.”

The outburst (bùng nổ, bột phát) sparked outrage (sự xúc phạm, lăng mạ) on Twitter with Bello trending at number one. The person whose tweets Bello was directed at, expressed shock at the insults, explaining that he wasn’t even Igbo. However, the debate became took another turn when Bello’s mother, Hadiza, who is a women’s rights advocate, was tagged. Mrs. el-Rufai defended her son’s outburst saying, “Don’t @me. Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind. All is fair in love and war.”

The scriptures (Kinh Thánh) of all religions emphasize the same thing. Goodness is the child of good deeds and misfortune and calamities (tai họa, tai ương) are the children of evil. This makes it necessary that we must check consciously whether our actions are beneficial or harmful to others. Our actions have an immediate impact on us before they affect others. Good deeds make us happy whereas bad deeds make our conscience sad. The choice is individual. Sow the wind and reap the whirlwind or sow love and reap love.

"Save one's bacon" = rút miếng thịt nướng khỏi bị cháy -> nghĩa là cứu ai đó khỏi tình thế khó khăn/hiểm nghèo.

Ví dụ
He cares about the stock (chứng khoán) market. He cares about the GDP. He cares about the meat supply. He wonders if anything will save his bacon.

IF you ever find yourself regretting a message you've sent on WhatsApp, the messaging app has a handy (hữu ích) feature to save your bacon.

"Skimp and save" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: camila waz on Unsplash

"Skimp and save" = tằn tiện và tiết kiệm -> nghĩa là tiêu tiền càng ít càng tốt, thường là để tiết kiệm cho mục tiêu lớn hơn.

Ví dụ
Don’t try to skimp and save; the more expensive kit (đồ nghề) is generally better performing than the cheaper stuff, but do your research carefully.

This is an Asian example. It works in other cultures too. Education is often considered the ladder to success. Parents skimp and save to give their children the best opportunities in life. The children return the favor by studying hard. They are those kids in the front row (hàng, dãy).

I'm looking at a year of service for my son, where I'm having to skimp and save as much as I can, to get as much out of that $20,000 as I can," said Kitlar-Pothier. "Because we don't know what's going to happen after.

The Polish military has admitted it accidentally (tình cờ/ngẫu nhiên) invaded (xâm lược/xâm lấn) the Czech Republic last month, but it insists (nhấn mạnh, khăng khăng, kiên quyết) its brief occupation (chiếm đóng) of a small part of the country was simply a "misunderstanding." (hiểu lầm)

Polish soldiers (binh lính, binh sĩ, quân nhân) mistakenly crossed the country's border with Czech Republic in late May before setting up there.

The soldiers, who had been guarding parts of the closed Polish-Czech border during the coronavirus pandemic, then started turning away Czech citizens who were attempting to visit a church in their own country.

The snafu led the Czech embassy in Warsaw to take "immediate action" and notify its Polish counterpart, adding that Poland has still not formally explained why it mistakenly annexed (sáp nhập, thôn tính lãnh thổ) its neighbor.

lịch maya sai rồi, ngày tận thế ko phải 21/12/2012 mà là 21/6/2020 :D
END OF THE WORLD fears have been heightened after a scientist revealed there was a discrepancy with the Mayan calendar - and now conspiracy theorists (người theo thuyết âm mưu) warn the world could end in just a few days time.

The Mayan calendar, which spanned for about 5,125 years starting in 3114BC, reached its end on December 21, 2012. The date was hailed by conspiracy theorists as being ‘the end of the world’, warning of an apocalyptic disaster (thảm họa tận thế). But when nothing happened, it seems these theorists worked out a flaw in their plan.

That's not to say they realised the world would not end, however. Instead, some now claim there was a discrepancy (sự chênh lệch) in the Gregorian calendar, which was introduced in 1582.

The ‘error’ meant that 11 days were lost from the year, to better reflect the time it takes Earth to orbit the sun.

But while 11 missing days does not sound a lot, the days quickly add up.

hồ 50.000 năm tuổi ở ấn độ chuyển màu hồng...

That was the question on people's minds across India after Lonar Lake in the state of Maharashtra suddenly changed hues (đột nhiên chuyển sắc) in recent days (trong những ngày gần đây).

Experts believe that the change is likely due to either increased salinity in the water (tăng độ mặn của nước), the presence of algae (xuất hiện tảo) or a combination of both,

"The amount of water in the lake has reduced and the lake has become shallower, so the salinity has gone up and caused some internal changes."

Kharat said that researchers are also investigating if the presence of red algae caused the color change.

Samples (mẫu xét nghiệm) are being sent to several labs,

"Cradle-to-grave" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Jeremy Bishop on Unsplash

"Cradle-to-grave" = từ chiếc nôi đến nấm mồ -> nghĩa là tồn tại trong suốt cuộc đời, hoặc trong quá trình cho phép, từ đầu đến cuối.

Ví dụ
The scheme (kế hoạch) further extends the range of initiatives for all ages run by Wolves Foundation, offering activities from cradle to grave as part of their programme to support the people of Wolverhampton.

Complementing (bổ sung) our services with The Sleep Council’s practical consumer information and advice, we will now be able to give everyone, from cradle to grave, a place to turn to for advice, support and help around sleep.

Take care of everyone. In my book Radical Help, I describe what a 21st-century social system would look like; how we could design a culture of care and connection that would take care of everyone cradle to grave.

"Sink like a stone" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Callie Morgan on Unsplash

"Sink like a stone" = chìm nghỉm như hòn đá -> nghĩa là thất bại hoàn toàn.

Ví dụ
Burnley will sink like a stone without Dyche. He has worked absolute miracles at the club, even taking them to a European finish, while they have also been operating well under their transfer budget (chi phí).

Demand was high at the time -- but the steroid scandal (and Barry Bonds) caused the value (giá trị) to sink like a stone. Multiple experts say the ball is only worth around $300k to $400k these days ... if that.

The current optimism and resilience (tính đàn hồi) also comes in the face of a collapse (suy sụp) in oil demand that has seen crude oil prices sink like a stone in the past few weeks. US crude prices have fallen further this morning hitting their lowest levels since 1999, below $15 a barrel.

We originally featured this bizarre court (phiên tòa kỳ lạ) case (trường hợp) back in 2016, when Frederic Desnard made international news headlines for suing French perfumery (xưởng chế nước hoa) Interparfum for $400,000 for making him work a boring job (công việc nhàm chán) that at one point made him suffer an epileptic (động kinh) fit and left him feeling depressed (trầm cảm). He also claimed that the company signed him off work for several months, and later used his prolonged absence (vắng mặt nhiều ngày) as an excuse to fire (sa thải) him in 2014. Last week, after four years of litigation, 48-year-old Desnard won his case, and a compensation of $45,000.

Paris’s appeals court ruled that Frederic Desnard suffered from “bore out”, which is technically the opposite of burnout, where an employee is overworked. The former manager’s lawyer claimed that the complete lack of stimulation at work had left the man feeling “destroyed” and “ashamed”, even triggering an epileptic fit when he was driving.

The Beachhotel Sahlenburg in the German city of Cuxhaven is hoping to welcome everyone back to the beach after the coronavirus lockdown ends, however not everyone is welcome on the sand.

In order to stay at the hotel, you need to be 130 kilograms (286) pounds or below.

“For reasons of liability, we would like to point out that the interior is not suitable for people with a body weight of more than 130 kg,” says the hotel.

The reason for the restriction? The hotels elegant design (thiết kế trang nhã) furniture is far too sensitive (dễ bị thương, dễ bị hỏng) and cannot support the weight of anyone upwards of 130kg.
