"Carry the ball" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Muyuan Ma on Unsplash

"Carry the ball" -> nghĩa là trong bóng bầu dục Mỹ, cầu thủ cố lấy thêm diện tích trên sân cho đội mình bằng cách chạy tiến lên trước trong khi giữ bóng, nghĩa khác là chịu trách nhiệm làm điều gì.

Ví dụ
But unless you're going to play one guy [for] most all the plays, it's always going to be, 'Why didn't this guy carry the ball? Why didn't that guy get more reps?' So, that's probably a conversation (cuộc trò chuyện) that we're going to have all year."

Coming into the football season, most teams in the Shore Conference knew Southern Regional’s running attack centered on junior Jaiden Brown. But while it’s one thing to suspect he’s going to carry the ball a lot, it’s another to try to stop him when he has it.

Master Teague rushed for 789 yards last season as the clear backup to J.K. Dobbins for the Buckeyes. Teague played in enough blowouts to carry the ball 135 times for a 5.8 yard average (trung bình), and he even was named third-team All-Big Ten.

The Redskin defense held, forcing a punt (bóng bổng), which traveled just 15 yards. After getting the ball back, Cornell carried the ball three times for 38 yards, finishing it off with a 16-yard touchdown run with 4:21 to push the lead to 33-21.

“Die with his boots on” nghĩa là gì?

“Die with one's boots on” -> nghĩa là chết khi còn trẻ/còn đang trong độ tuổi làm việc sung mãn (chết bất đắc kỳ tử; chết treo).

Ví dụ
He told the House: “I will die with my boots on and nobody, nobody under the sun will ever tell me to walk away. I walk away when the people tell me to walk away. I want to make that very clear to everybody in here.

“My dad and my grandaddy always taught the philosophy (triết lý) that you die with your boots on, keep moving,” the twice-elected governor, who stepped down more than a decade ago to serve as an ambassador (đại sứ) for first, a Democratic president, and later a Republican, recently told the Deseret News and KSL editorial boards.

San Antonio, TX Billy C. Shaw, age 83, current residence of San Antonio, Texas and long-time former resident of Conyers, Georgia passed away on September 22, 2020 at 6:11 PM. As promised to Billy this notice states "He is gone!" Billy fought a long and tough fight against cancer that consumed a large portion of his face and neck. Along with metastasized lymphoma his body became weary, he longed to return to Texas to die with his boots on. When the funeral (đám tang) home workers came to pick up his body he was dressed in his pearl snap western shirt, starched creased blue jeans, large silver belt buckle, with his black Stetson hat in one hand and the his Thompson chain Bible in his other hand. Of course, his boots were on.

“Contend with a problem” nghĩa là gì?

“Contend with a problem” -> nghĩa là chịu khó khăn, vất vả/khổ sở vì vấn đề do ai gây ra.

Ví dụ
During the 2013 holiday season, Coach had to contend with a problem many retailers have complained about: a drop in traffic to shopping malls, and fewer shoppers coming into its stores. Still, kate spade and Michael Kors, which operate many stores in the same malls as Coach, are expected to report sales gains.

Astronomers (thiên văn học) have to increasingly contend with a problem that they wish would go away but never will — satellite mega-constellations. If plans of private space companies are to materialise, there will likely be satellites in the tens of thousands swarming around Earth within this decade.

The e-commerce behemoth’s (con vật kếch xù) Prime Day sales last week was a massive exercise in logistics that ended up swelling Amazon Fulfillment Centers by over 25%, as recorded by Freightos Marketplace. The incredible complexities of ramping up logistical efforts apart, Amazon had to contend with a problem that was non-existent in its first two editions – the ascent of crude oil prices. Diesel fuel prices have gone up by 45%, while jet-fuel prices have risen by over 50% since last year. Though this would have put a strain on Amazon’s resources, it makes the Prime Day success all the more astonishing.

“Burn with a low blue flame” nghĩa là gì?

“Burn with a low blue flame” = cháy với ngọn lửa xanh nhẹ -> nghĩa là tức không thể tả; hoặc rất say.

Ví dụ
She burned with a low blue flame, which is unlike her. I put my head around the door and she was sitting on my mate’s lap face to face with him.

You could burn with a low blue flame. You could be squiffy (say chếnh choáng), scrooched, and sprung. Slopped to the ears. Stewed to the gills. Fried to the hat.

Some burn with a low blue flame and distrust that can manifest (bày tỏ, biểu lộ) itself into extreme aggression (sự công kích cực đoan) and violence, causing them to lash out at anyone in front of them.

“Break faith with” nghĩa là gì?

“Break faith with” = phá vỡ niềm tin -> nghĩa là không thực hiện như mình đã hứa.

Ví dụ
Speaking from personal experience, it seems that with the GOP establishment there is never an acceptable time to criticize Republican officials who carry water for the Austin lobby, break faith with conservative voters, or even enable the Democrats.

The chief of the US Coast Guard has said he "will not break faith" with transgender (người chuyển giới) personnel after Donald Trump said they would be banned from serving in the military. The US Coast Guard commandant, Admiral Paul Zukunft, offered support for transgender.

Police are investigating after the cenotaph at Old City Hall was vandalized just one day after Remembrance Day. Writing that was spray-painted on the cenotaph sometime this morning reads, ‘Ye Broke Faith With Us.' The words appear to reference the line, "If ye break faith with us who die," from John McCrae's poem 'In Flanders Fields.' It is not clear exactly when the cenotaph was defaced but it was first reported to police at around 7 a.m.

“Be puffed up with pride” nghĩa là gì?

“Be puffed up with pride” = phổng mũi/ngực căng kiêu ngạo -> nghĩa là vênh váo, dương dương tự đắc.

Ví dụ
“Don’t be puffed up with pride if you are able to provide for your needs with very little cost. The first task of the person who wishes to live wisely is to free himself or herself from the confines of self-absorption (chỉ quan tâm đến mình).”

New Mexicans are puffed up with pride just about now. Native son Rudolfo Anaya was honored by President Barack Obama last week at the White House with the National Humanities Medal — as is befitting a son of the Southwest, Anaya wore a bolo tie. He already has been awarded the National Medal of Arts.

You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful (khoe khoang) and proud, scoffing (nhạo báng) at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander (vu khống) others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! — 2 Timothy 3:1-5 NLT

"Be there with bells on” nghĩa là gì?

"Be there with bells on” = rung chuông đi tới đó -> nghĩa là rất phấn khởi/háo hức để tham gia.

Ví dụ
While it’s still uncertain which particular cast members will be in attendance, fans of Father of the Bride will be pleased to know that it appears Steve Martin, who played the title character in this 90’s classic, will be there with bells on.

Today is one of those days where it seems that if you have a headache everyone else has a migraine (nhức nửa đầu). If you need help you may need to spell it out but once friends hear they’ll be there with bells on. You're very capable but it's time to allow yourself to be vulnerable and ask for assistance.

I’m still moved by them, especially now, when the idea of being with loved ones seems out of reach. And so I’m using Van Noten’s magical soirée (dạ hội) as my own personal meditation on the bright and wonderful possibilities of the unknown future. We will all gather to eat together again—though maybe not at a 500-person table flanked by crystal and silk. Wherever that future dinner is set, my RSVP will be an emphatic “yes!” I’ll be there with bells on, in fact.

“Be rubbing your hands with glee” nghĩa là gì?

“Be rubbing (one's) hands with glee” = xoa tay hả hê -> nghĩa là vui sướng vì người khác gặp điều rủi.

Ví dụ
Don't be rubbing your hands with glee after a 64 as it'll likely get beat! Historically the early starters have done slightly better and they may avoid the heavy rain too. I'll therefore take two from the morning wave but leave one pick for the afternoon.

If you are working hard and doing the right thing it is all the more galling that some of those who do the wrong thing are not being investigated or punished for their crimes. On the other side of the coin, if you work at the Department for International Development you must be rubbing your hands with glee.

If you do have more cash to invest, you should be rubbing your hands with glee — and planning to follow Buffett’s “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful” rule. When all the so-called experts are weeping and wailing and selling their fallen shares because they’re too afraid of what might happen tomorrow, or next week, that’s the time to help yourselves by taking them off their hands at a bargain price (giá hời).

"A kick in the balls" nghĩa là gì?

"A kick in the balls" = cú đá vào chim/giữa háng -> nghĩa là thất bại thảm hại/đáng thất vọng; nghĩa khác là trừng phạt nghiêm khắc vì hành động ngu ngốc, xấu xa.
Ví dụ
If 2020 couldn’t be enough of a kick in the balls, tonight we faced our most difficult tragedy (thảm kịch) ever. A massive fire broke out at BBC and has caused enormous damage. Our sign still remains in our window though ‘LEWISTON STRONG.’ The support of our community already is unbelievable. THANK GOD nobody was in the building when this happened. Thank you to every first responder who helped contain this and we will rebuild and be better than ever!

It sounds like a big kick in the balls, but if you sold yours for $500, it's still a kick in the balls because now it's worth (đáng giá) $1,500. My friend sold his for $500 on eBay a little while later and was laughing at me, but he wishes he had it back now because it's worth so much more.

Due to the worsening COVID-19 situation in Melbourne, Scotty and the Carnage crew decided to turn back time and once again move the VE wagon shell back to Scotty’s garage so he could work on it in the safety of isolation (cô lập). It was a bit of a kick in the balls, as we’d only moved the wagon back to the Carnage workshop a month or so prior in the hopes of really getting stuck in.

Then, Firaxis decides to just give away the base game and push the expanded (mở rộng) versions at a slight discount. At this point, for people who bought vanilla and wanted expansions it was actually cheaper to buy 'game of year' version (so technically having paid for the same game twice) than it cost to purchase the DLC separately. Bit of a kick in the balls for those Civ fans who put up their money (bỏ tiền) early.

"You must be fun at parties" nghĩa là gì?

"You must be fun at parties" = chắc mày hài hước ở mấy bữa tiệc lắm -> câu mỉa mai ám chỉ người tẻ nhạt, không hài hước, lãng xẹt hoặc không thể chịu nổi.

Ví dụ
'You must be fun at parties'? Why I couldn't care less if men think I lack a sense of humour. There's a certain dialect (phương ngữ) that has evolved on the Internet that embodies the most petulant of childish behaviour – the linguistic equivalent of your sibling waving their finger two inches from your face while shrieking, "you can't stop me, I'm not touching you!"

Jesus you must be fun at parties. Anyway I actually had a pretty good experience with beta 4 and so far beta 5 seems pretty much the same tbh but I'd say its safe to update! When a beta version gets a kinda-bad reception (đón nhận) like what happened to v4, the next one always tends to be better ahah.
You must be fun at parties Ken! Maybe we should all be using Horse and Carts! Bet you’d be the first to complain (than phiền) too if something you urgently needed wasn’t available. Those “unnecessary” B-Doubles keep people feed and drive economic growth. Faster transport between capital cities, airports and ports is what drives society. Look what roads did for the Romans! Anyways… enjoy your internet, electricity and other utility free existence.

Sally, you must be fun at parties! Reactions like this never cease to amaze me. Are 26 new homes really going to destroy your “charming” neighborhood? Virginia is a big state––I’m sure you could move somewhere a little more subdued (khẽ) where you can squeeze Hanover tomatoes in peace.

BYU-Idaho issued a statement Monday, saying administrators (giáo vụ, quản lý) are "deeply troubled" about students intentionally (cố tình) exposing (phơi nhiễm) themselves or others to COVID-19, with the hope of getting the disease so they can be paid for plasma that contains COVID-19 antibodies (kháng thể).

The university says it "condemns (lên án, chê trách, quy tội) this behavior" and is "activity seeking evidence of any such conduct" among its students.

..."The contraction and spread of COVID-19 is not a light matter. Reckless (khinh suất) disregard  (bất chấp, coi nhẹ) for health and safety will inevitably lead to additional illness and loss of life in our community... We urge all members of the campus community to act respectfully and responsibly by observing all public health and university protocols and placing the well-being of others above personal benefit or convenience," the statement reads.

"The carpet matches the drapes" nghĩa là gì?

"The carpet matches the drapes" = thảm cùng màu với rèm cửa -> nghĩa là tóc cô gái cùng màu với lông mu cô ấy, ý nói cô ấy chưa nhuộm tóc.

Ví dụ
I was trying to see if there was a way I could get through the rest of this article without talking about Sonic saying “the carpet matches the drapes and my butt.” There’s just no way not to acknowledge (nhận biết) that. I mean what a line and what a great way to immediately inform viewers of the tone to expect here.

Blake is certainly unbothered (không bận tâm) by any of that backlash (phản ứng). And anyway, it’s not the first time she’s even used that pun. Last year, she noticed a similarity between her dress and a backdrop, and wrote, “When the carpet matches the drapes.” So even though she didn't bring along husband Ryan Reynolds to the gala, she did just fine in the Insta-humor category by herself.

So, what does an accidentally high person choose to wear to a red carpet? A red suit of course. Smooth, Jonas! Totally blending (hòa trộn) in. Sunglasses are a nice touch to cover up his inevitable stoner (sắt đá) eyes. For everyone wanting to know if the carpet matches the drapes  (rather, eyes actually, and also apparently his suit) it definitely does behind those shades.

I have a confession (thú thật). I am a ginger (cô gái có mái tóc vàng). I have freckles (tàn nhang), I don't tan. SPF 50 is my friend. I was teased as a kid. I clash with certain colors. And yes, the carpet matches the drapes. Being a ginger is really a way of life, and I am here to say, it's not easy for a ginge out there.

"If there's grass on the field, play ball" nghĩa là gì?

"If there's grass on the field, play ball" = nếu sân có cỏ thì chơi bóng được rồi -> nghĩa là nếu đã dậy thì (bộ phận sinh dục đã có lông mu) thì có thể làm tình được rồi.

Ví dụ
It’s everywhere, this sexualisation of young girls. The jokes about “jail bait” and “if there’s grass on the field, play ball”, insinuating (ám chỉ) that once a girl has pubic hair, she’s automatically sexually available.

It was me when I would laugh with others and/or joke about such things as "if there's grass on the field, play ball" or "any port in a storm". This is one example of the shit that people mean when they talk about rape culture.

“If There’s Grass On The Field Play Ball”. While it has a slightly whimsical (kì quái) connotation (nghĩa rộng), inferring that a team is game to play as long as they can, in sex, it’s a little less wholesome. Provided that a girl has, um, grass on her, um, field, she’s fair game to sleep with. Total Pro Sports does not condone this philosophy, nor do any of the 50 states. Check their driver’s license. If they don’t have a driver’s license, you best run, don’t walk, away.

“If there’s grass on the field, play ball, right, right,” Vernacchio agreed, “which is interesting in this rather hair-phobic (sợ lông) society where a lot of people are shaving (cạo) their pubic hair (lông mu)— ”

"A ground ball with eyes" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Joey Kyber on Unsplash

"A ground ball with eyes" = quả bóng có mắt -> nghĩa là trong bóng chày, quả bóng được đánh, rơi xuống đất và tránh được hai hoặc hơn các cầu thủ bắt bóng trong sân, tạo cơ hội cho người đánh bóng chạy về cọc gôn. Gọi là có "mắt" vì như thể quả bóng "thấy" được đường của nó để tránh khỏi bị tóm.

Ví dụ
You know what the difference between hitting .250 and .300 is? It’s 25 hits. Twenty-five hits in 500 at-bats is 50 points, OK? There’s six months in a season. That’s about 25 weeks. That means if you get just one extra flare a week, just one, a gork, a ground ball — a ground ball with eyes! — you get a dying quail (chim cút), just one more dying quail a week and you’re in Yankee Stadium. You still don’t know what I’m talking about, do you?

We missed some signs. We didn’t execute very well in certain situations. And, we’ve got to compete better on the mound. That first game has kind of been a problem for us all summer. We get to the bullpen and we struggle (gặp khó khăn). We struggle to put the ball across the plate. And then a couple walks, a ground ball with eyes and all of a sudden (bất ngờ) we’re in a tough spot. We’ve struggled with that all summer.

We played Garrigan in the district finals, and they came close to ending our season. A ground ball with eyes up the middle and an extremely favorable hop over the shortstop’s glove scored a couple of runs and ultimately allowed us to win.

He nearly claimed a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals when a ground ball with eyes from Ryan Zimmermann derailed (làm trật bánh) it in the ninth inning.
