"The picture of health" nghĩa là gì?

"The picture of health" -> nghĩa là trông rất khỏe mạnh, cường tráng, đầy sức sống.

Ví dụ
Tim Corey is praying help can be found for his dear friend Terry Spivey, 57, who is on a ventilator (cửa thông gió) at a Brunswick hospital after being diagnosed with COVID-19 in mid-December. "It can't get much more dire (kinh khủng)," Pastor Tim Corey said. Prior to getting the coronavirus Corey said Spivey was the picture of health.

TMZ was the first to report her death, quoting a rep as saying Roberts — the picture of health — had collapsed (gục ngã) at her home in L.A. on Christmas Eve after walking her dog, was put on a ventilator, and never recovered (phục hồi).

She looked the picture of health as she returned to her presenting duties little over three months after she gave birth to her son Blake. And Rochelle Humes wore a green wrap dress from Pretty Lavish with ankle boots by 4thandreckless as she joined Phillip Schofield, 58, on the show.

Grant Williams, on the other hand (mặt khác), has been the picture of health since joining the team, and all three have shown they can stay on the floor and help a high-level team.

"Take a picture, it will last longer" nghĩa là gì?

"Take a picture, it will last longer"  = chụp ảnh đi, sẽ giữ được lâu hơn đấy -> câu nói mỉa mai khi ai đó nhìn chằm chằm vào điều gì.

Ví dụ
"There's a saying, 'Take a picture, it will last longer.' In this regard, my advice is that maybe you shouldn't because it will last forever," Forbes said. "I have always told those who ask that no matter what you are doing, take 30 seconds and think about it. If any part of seems like a bad idea, then don't do it."

This expands on my previous point about cellphones. With technology at our fingertips, it’s easy to constantly be snapping photos (guilty as charged!), but sometimes the “take a picture, it will last longer” sentiment (quan điểm) gets in the way of living in the moment.

You can’t stop time, but they say if you take a picture it will last longer. That’s what music photographer Jim McGuire did with “The Nashville Portraits,” an exhibit of historic portraits (chân dung) of country music stars that are on display at Belmont’s Leu Art Gallery.

OK, I totally get that some of us may feel a tad embarrassed when someone walks in on you snapping a selfie, but most of the time, you won't even see these people again... so just go for it! And besides, it's true that if you take a picture it will last longer.

"So long, and thanks for all the fish" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by sydney Rae on Unsplash

"So long, and thanks for all the fish" = tạm biệt và cảm ơn vì đống cá nhé -> câu chào tạm biệt hài hước khi một doanh nghiệp đóng cửa hoặc ai nghỉ hưu, rời khỏi vị trí đang làm.

Ví dụ
In Europe, however, people are moving on. “So long, and thanks for all the fish,” reads the cheeky (xấc láo) front-page of centre-right German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Written in April, less than a month after the World Health Organisation declared (tuyên bố) COVID-19 a pandemic, the popular columnist mused about the outlook for the gold price. He penned his final column in August, signing off after 12 years using the immortal words of Douglas Adams: "So long and thanks for all the fish".

So long and thanks for all the fish. In personal news, this will be my last week with Real Change. I have been with the paper since 2016 and have deeply enjoyed my time here. I appreciate (cảm kích) the affection that the Seattle community holds for the paper and its vendors and am continuously inspired by that support. Thank you.

So long and thanks for all the fish: Rick Stein only started cooking seafood when Cornwall officials closed down his bar and night club.

"I hate to break it to you" nghĩa là gì?

"I hate to break it to you" = tôi rất ghét phải nói với bạn điều này (nhưng mà...) -> nghĩa là điều tôi nói ra có thể khiến bạn mất lòng.

Ví dụ
I hate to break it to you but there's a difference between Chinese bound quality control vs global brand quality control. Granted it may not be like it was even 10 years ago but the stuff I've purchased (mua) within the last 2 years from china have been of very poor quality.

I know that you don’t have a natural inclination (nghiêng) towards infectious diseases; in fact, you greatly dreaded that part of the pharmacy curriculum in college. I hate to break it to you, but there’s going to be an outbreak of a viral infection that will grow into a pandemic. It’ll be a baptism (thử thách) of fire for you into the pharmacy profession.

I hate to break it to you, but I doubt 2021 is going to be annus mirabilis (một năm tuyệt vời). The virus isn’t going away, and it’s unclear if the clutch of vaccines on the horizon will withstand its ominous (điềm xấu), new mutations. The government isn’t going to let up; we aren’t going to mingle any time soon; and the stresses and strains on our lives will stay.

Everyone is looking forward to 2021, probably a little too much. I hate to break it to you, but Skittles will not fall from the sky at the stroke of midnight.

"Mistaken zeal" nghĩa là gì?

yêu con, nhưng đừng chiều con quá... Photo by Daiga Ellaby on Unsplash.

'Mistaken zeal' nghĩa là nhiệt tình không đúng chỗ.

Ví dụ
“Power is like the ocean; not easily admitting limits to be fixed in it.” “It will be much easier for me to bear the unmerited reflections of a mistaken zeal, than the just reproaches of a guilty mind.” “A good man ought to serve his country, even tho’ she resents his services.”

By the nineteen-twenties, attitudes toward mothers had begun to shift. Some psychologists and other experts warned against over-mothering, and commentators blamed mothers for the nation’s ills. A 1923 ad for izal Disinfectant tells the sad tale of “The Mother Who Loved Too Well.” “In her mistaken zeal,” a young mother yielded too much to her baby’s demands, leaving “no spoken or implied wish ungratified.” Weakened by her excessive attention, the baby died. (Abbott Laboratories, which sold the disinfectant, encouraged people instead to visit the doctor regularly, as part of a national campaign “to check the spread of disease.”)

Pinchot had laid out his goals for US forestry even prior to taking the helm of the Division of Forestry. Employed at age twenty-six as manager of the forests on George W. Vanderbilt’s massive Biltmore estate, Pinchot wrote in Garden and Forestry that his work there “should do much to remove forestry from the anomalous and often illogical position into which the mistaken zeal of some of its friends have forced it, and to ground its roots in the solid Earth of business common sense . . . [My work] asserts a proposition which must ultimately lie at the base of forest preservation in this country: namely, that it is not necessary to destroy a forest to make it pay.”

“Playing for sheep stations” nghĩa là gì?

“Playing for sheep stations” có sheep station là trang trại cừu lớn ở Úc -> cụm từ này nghĩa là nói điều lớn lao hoặc quan trọng.

Ví dụ
Any contest becomes enthralling (vô cùng thú vị) when they’re playing for sheep stations and at this time of year, it’s all sheep stations.

Political parties and voters will quite literally be "playing for sheep stations" on Saturday, May 18, at the Federal (liên bang) election according to Deputy Prime Minister and leader of The Nationals, Michael McCormack.

“It’s a great opportunity and a lot of the older guys are coming back. As I like to say, all because you have walked away from cricket at Salters Oval doesn’t mean your career is finished. “Vets Cricket gives you another opportunity to get out and keep playing – and we are not playing for sheep stations!”

“Straight to the pool room” nghĩa là gì?

Photo by mali desha on Unsplash

“Straight to the pool room” có pool room là phòng tốt nhất để giữ những thứ tốt đẹp -> cụm từ này nghĩa là điều đáng trân quý; bắt nguồn từ phim The Castle.

Ví dụ
Sharing an image of the couple as Simpsons characters, she wrote: 'Three hundred and sixty five days. Thanks for the artwork, it's going straight to the pool room.'

I thought they might appreciate a digital photo frame so the first baby photos could take pride of place; the digital equivalent (tương đương) of sending them "straight to the pool room".

"Over time I will indeed learn to love it. I'll put it straight to the pool room." Hosking also gave Ardern's daughter Neve a Micky Mouse soft toy with Neve's name stamped on Micky's foot, wowing Ardern as she unwrapped the gift.

“Dry as a dead dingo’s donger” nghĩa là gì?

“Dry as a dead dingo’s donger” = khô như chó dingo đã chết -> nghĩa là khát khô cả cổ (thường trong bối cảnh quán rượu, khi rượu mãi chưa được dọn lên vì bồi bàn quá chậm, và thực khách đã mất kiên nhẫn).

Ví dụ
Now, linguistics (ngôn ngữ học) is a topic most of us would consider as dry as a dead dingo’s donger, but our slang is intrinsically (bản chất) tied to our Australian identity.

I thought it would be a piece of piss I forgot this country was dry as a dead dingo's donger. Food and water couldn't stay fresh in our Esky until the smoko so, guess about the lunch time!

It’s as dry as a dead dingo’s donger. Our rain gauges (đồng hồ đo) gather dust, our dams are empty sockets, our creeks (con lạch) are memories and our two rivers haven’t been rivers for years. Instead of coming from their flows, or the skies, our water is now delivered at huge expense by tankers.

"Cracking the shits" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Icons8 Team on Unsplash

“Cracking the shits” = đập vỡ cục phân -> nghĩa là rất tức giận.

Ví dụ
And there was this guy in the audience cracking the shits about it. He was yelling out  (la hét) 'You're not even playing real instruments!

So basically, Roxi wasn’t just cracking the shits at Juliette, she allegedly got sick of being a “puppet” and tonight’s antics (trò cười) were the final nail in the coffin for her.

Right now, property investors and prospective (có triển vọng) buyers are cracking the shits about the glut of off-the-plan apartments currently being constructed around Australia.

"Mistaken kindness" nghĩa là gì?

"cách mạng" chỉ khiến nông dân lười thêm thôi... Photo by Clay Banks on Unsplash.

'Mistaken kindness' có mistaken là sai lầm trong ý kiến -> cụm từ này nghĩa là lòng tốt không đúng chỗ.

Ví dụ
In 1933 surgeons (bác sĩ phẫu thuật) discussing stomach cancer (ung thư dạ dày) quoted, approvingly, an old Arab saying that “he is no physician who has not slain many patients.” Concern for patients’ quality of life was castigated as “mistaken kindness.” In 1962, a ward where children were administered multiple chemotherapy (hóa trị) agents was called a “butcher shop.”

As historian Eric Foner writes in Reconstruction, when radical Republicans in Congress considered redistributing land (chia đất) owned by defeated Confederates to former slaves (nô lệ), their more moderate comrades offered arguments like "for the government to give blacks land would be an act of 'mistaken kindness' that would prevent them from learning 'the habits of free workingmen.” Freedmen were begging for land so they could work it for themselves instead of being forced to work the land of their former masters for pitiable wages--former masters who had grown wealthy on generations of slaves' uncompensated (không được đền bù) labor. Still, opponents of land redistribution believed this would make blacks lazy (lười biếng).

Indigenous (thổ dân, bản địa) people barely warrant a mention in Strangers, as Woodsworth lumps them into a four-page section called “The Negro and the Indian,” wherein Woodsworth promotes Christian proselytization, education and assimilation as the only hope for these “savages”: “Many are devout Christians leading exemplary lives, but there are still 10,202 Indians in our Dominion, as grossly pagan as their ancestors, or still more wretched, half-civilized, only to be debauched.” Woodsworth mused, “the Indian of today is very much nearer to the civilized white than to his pagan ancestor,” which assumed progress he warns has been hampered by “the mistaken kindness of the State.”

-----
This letter addresses one of the countless zombie myths (huyễn hoặc) about trade:

Mr. Crosby:
You ask: “How do free trade principles (nguyên tắc tự do thương mại) deal with a powerful foreign country like China unfairly subsidizing (trợ cấp không công bằng, không theo các nguyên tắc bình thường) its exports to us and using the profits to build its military up?”

The assumption that sparks your question is widespread but mistaken (sai lầm trong ý kiến). Sales made only because of subsidies bring in revenues less than the full costs of producing the goods that are sold. To subsidize such export sales, Beijing acquires the necessary resources from the Chinese people. By orchestrating subsidies, Beijing thus inflicts losses on the Chinese people and makes the Chinese economy weaker than it would be without such subsidies.

Further, the country that gains from such subsidies is the United States: We Americans get valuable goods from China at prices less than we’d have to pay otherwise.

The higher are Beijing’s subsidies and tariffs, the weaker the Chinese economy and, hence, the fewer are the resources available to Beijing for military uses. Therefore, to the extent that we Americans worry about Beijing building up its military, we should actively encourage Beijing not only to continue, but to increase, its subsidization of Chinese exports and to further raise its tariffs on imports into China. And the last thing that we should do is to “retaliate” (trả đũa) with our own subsidies and tariffs – policies that would only weaken our economy.

Sincerely,
Donald J. Boudreaux

"Ride herd on" nghĩa là gì?

Ước mơ là phải tự mình nắm lắm. Photo by Olenka Sergienko from Pexels

"Ride herd on (someone/something)" nghĩa là giám sát, kiểm soát, điều khiển. Cụm từ xuất phát từ hành động cao bồi cưỡi ngựa vòng quanh để lùa đàn gia súc theo hàng lối.

Ví dụ
Listen up. Quit waiting for someone else to make your dreams come true. Why is it so difficult for us girls to ride herd on our dreams?

One advantage of taking this approach would be that these functional PEOs would be technically savvy (hiểu biết) enough to ride herd on contractors (nhà thầu) to ensure that proposed solutions are truly open.

The President's statement quoted in question 5 does not mean "that the Government must ride herd on, and control, all private activities". It is designed rather to strengthen the role of the individual by encouraging him to carry out policies which will obviate (loại bỏ) the need for expanding the role of Government.

By its nature, it’s also bureaucratic (quan liêu) work, although because of the magnitude (tính nghiêm trọng) of the Katrina and Rita disasters, that process is probably a good bit easier for local governments and the nonprofit sector. Laws and regulations have been improved, but one of the things needed in 2021 in our worst-hit region is that Louisiana’s delegation (phái đoàn) in Congress continues to ride herd on the regs (quy định) and financial difficulties of steering aid to the right places.

"Suffer an attack of" nghĩa là gì?

"Suffer an attack of some illness" -> nghĩa là bỗng dưng đổ bệnh, xuất hiện các triệu chứng.

Ví dụ
He made a wedding for one of his children before Purim last year and he was worried that he would suffer an attack of pain in the middle of the wedding.

In any given year, an estimated (ước lượng) 4 million British women will suffer an attack of cystitis (viêm bọng đái), a urinary tract infection (UTI) with typical symptoms of bladder pain and a burning sensation when passing urine.

There are quite a few jacks roaming around in the lagoon, so don’t suffer an attack of severe brain flatulence (đầy hơi) and forget that, even though they are under 20 inches, they still count toward your two-per-day limit.

‘But one of the benefits of having a large team is the amount of knowledge in the room, and luckily one of the people in the theatre knew Mahler very well.’ But wasn’t he worried that Dagmar might unexpectedly panic or suffer an attack of stage fright (sợ sân khấu), waking up in such a vulnerable (dễ tổn thương) state?

"In a haze" nghĩa là gì?

"In a haze" có haze là hoang mang, mơ hồ -> cụm từ này nghĩa là không hoàn toàn tỉnh táo, cảnh giác, tâm trí bị che mờ.

Ví dụ
He spent much of his stay at McKay-Dee sedated (bình thản) to ease the discomfort of being connected to a ventilator. But while in a haze at times, the seriousness of the situation was in no way lost on him.

Russia began 2020 in a haze of uncertainty, as President Vladimir Putin faced constitutionally imposed term limits that could have curtailed (lấy đi) the longest Kremlin reign (triều đại) since Joseph Stalin.

I began wondering how can I take my skillset and apply (áp dụng) it to that? I was kind of in a haze of taking in all this information then I thought maybe it would be fun if I took a screenshot of something and turned it into a song.

After missing, I was in a haze until I had to take another penalty kick. I was terrified because it hadn’t even been five minutes from the last shot I missed.
