"Harbor ill will toward" nghĩa là gì?

Ông nhớ mặt tôi đấy!! Photo by Giorgio Trovato on Unsplash

"Harbor ill will toward" có harbor là có suy nghĩ, ill là ác, điều hại -> cụm từ này nghĩa là vẫn cảm thấy tức giận, thù hằn với ai; thù dai.

Ví dụ
Monta Ellis's departure from the Golden State Warriors was infamous (nổi tiếng) for how much it annoyed Dubs fans, but it appears Ellis doesn't harbor ill-will toward his former team.

The decision to part (tách) ways with Doug Pederson didn’t necessarily repair everything. Wentz may still harbor ill will toward the front office. Here is what Garafolo said during an appearance (xuất hiện) on SportsRadio 94WIP.

While Noble may harbor ill will toward Trump, his articles “simply do not show or suggest Mr. Noble ‘was aware (nhận biết) of the true facts’ regarding the Statement and published false facts in reckless disregard (không quan tâm) of the truth,” the judge wrote.

Cayne’s 2019 petition (cầu xin) alleges (tuyên bố) that his insistence (mong muốn) on a live auction caused Friedland to spend more on the maid’s room than he otherwise would have had the bids been sealed, which in turn caused Friedland to harbor a “personal animus” against Cayne for the 20 ensuing years. In her ruling, Justice Bannon contended that “[Cayne] himself may harbor ill will toward Friedland for inflating the price of the maid’s quarters purchased by [Cayne] for the same price.”

The Global Drugs Survey (GDS) for 2020 placed England and Scotland at the top of its international league table of how often people get so drunk that they slur their speech (nói líu nhíu) and lose their balance (mất thăng bằng).

More than 110,000 people across the world were questioned by the GDS, including 5,283 Brits, between November 2019 to February 2020 – so before the coronavirus pandemic (đại dịch) tore through daily life.

It found that many Britons were drinking at dangerous levels (mức độ nguy hiểm), with more than five per cent of under-25s admitting to having sought emergency medical treatment (điều trị y tế khẩn cấp) after getting drunk, compared to a global average of two per cent.

“Endowment bias” nghĩa là gì?

“Endowment bias” = thiên vị sở hữu -> nghĩa là xu hướng thiên vị về cảm xúc khiến cá nhân định giá đối tượng sở hữu cao hơn (thường là phi lí, so với giá trị thị trường của nó); 'của mình thì quý, của người thì ôi'.

Ví dụ
A lot of what happens in the NHL can be described as combinations (sự kết hợp) of endowment bias and the sunk cost fallacy, and the Ceci situation looked like that to me. The insiders say that’s about to change.

The endowment bias in terms of investing means that investors are naturally reluctant (lưỡng lự) to exit their holdings at the right time. They might prefer to stay in a position even after the indicators suggest that the asset should be sold to minimize losses or maximize gains.

‘Endowment bias’ is the idea that something we own is more valuable than something we do not. As humans, we are hardwired to avoid making losses to the extent that we will hold onto something that we own even if we are losing money by doing so. This is known as loss aversion (ác cảm), or the endowment bias, which leads us to place greater value on things that we own – including shares – than things that we don’t.

“Be not worth a dime” nghĩa là gì?

“Be not worth a dime” -> nghĩa là 'không đáng một xu', vô giá trị.

Ví dụ
“What my grandnephew says is not worth a dime to me. He is immature… I have clearly said that I have 100 per cent trust in the Maharashtra Police and Mumbai Police. But if someone still wants a CBI probe into it, then there is no reason to oppose that too,” Pawar had said on August 12.

I can guarantee here that a number of people reading this car-ticle will disagree with me on a number of my choices for what should be considered Dodge cars that are worth every penny and Dodge cars that just are not even worth a dime. I know this. And I am sorry to say that I can't please everyone but I will say that my basis for each choice, whether good or bad is pretty solid based on reviews, ratings, and performance...and looks too, to some extent.

I am 17 years old and I am living in the US with my parents. From I was 16, they have been allowing me to date. I have gone out many times but some these guys are not worth a dime. They cannot even hold a good conversation and they are always talking foolishness. I know how to operate. They do not engage me in intelligent conversations, they do not challenge my intellect. I told myself that in the future I will not date any guy unless he is in his 20s. Recently, I went out with a guy twice. He seems nice, but all he was playing on his radio was sexy songs and I do not like that. When I told him to put on different CDs, he told me I was boring.

“Be not the full quid” nghĩa là gì?

“Be not the full quid” = không đủ liều thuốc lá -> nghĩa (lóng) là hơi điên khùng, chập mạch, dở người.

Ví dụ
How would those kids feel, if not bullied, to be targeted by a famous Australian, saying their family is not the full quid?

Campbell says Bill is "not the full quid, I tend to favour walking around in my underpants". "He's a good incorrigible (không thể sửa được) character to play.

3 horses to do that out of 8 bets is truly a bad run mate. Did you spit at the TV after the 3rd one? I would have but then again I'm not the full quid when I'm punting and angry.

“Present bias” nghĩa là gì?

“Present bias” = định kiến hiện tại -> nghĩa là xu hướng đánh giá cao phần thưởng hiện tại hơn là trong tương lai.

Ví dụ
In behavioral economics, “present-bias” refers to when people settle for something smaller today, in the present, rather than holding a potentially larger reward in the future.

Other errors include present bias and hyperbolic discounting. This is where leaders give disproportionate (không cân xứng) weight to the cost of preventive health measures incurred now, versus the later reward of a productive and healthy workforce.

Many people who live beyond their means are in effect demonstrating a ‘present bias’ – believing that spending money in the present is more important that putting money away for future financial security. The tendency (khuynh hướng) with this bias is to focus on the present by over-valuing the immediate rewards rather than focusing on the longer-term rewards, even if they are more favourable or beneficial than the immediate one.

“Be not in the same league” nghĩa là gì?

“Be not in the same league” -> nghĩa là không cùng đẳng cấp.

Ví dụ
Mr. Navalny, notwithstanding the euphoria (trạng thái phởn phơ) of the moment, is unlikely to be the catalyst (chất xúc tác) that will lead to “regime change” in Russia. His nationalist platform is not currently capable of appealing to all sections of Russian society or convincing the political opposition to coalesce (kết hợp thành một chất, một nhóm) around it. He is simply not in the same league as Mr. Putin and several other leaders but could, for the time being, serve as the lightning rod for the people to register their disaffection with the regime’s policies.

What if I was to tell you that most of those games you play on the comparatively small screen of your phone, can be made available on your TV as well. A much larger canvas to enjoy games, isn’t it? Albeit most certainly not in the same league as the Xbox and the PlayStation. That’s exactly what the Amkette Evo Game Box does. Irrespective of whether your TV is a smart TV or not, the Evo Fox Game Box simply adds both dimensions to the experience—gaming and video streaming. But how much money will you have to part with?

After the meeting, Oberyn and Varys take a moment to chat. Varys hasn’t been heard from too much this season, and has clearly proven to be not in the same league as his old frenemy (kẻ thù đội lốt bạn bè) Littlefinger when it comes to masterful manipulating. But that doesn’t mean he’s not still in the game. After Oberyn puzzles over the fact that earlier in his life Varys was never attracted to either women or men before his … unfortunate incident … Varys says that “the absence of desire leaves one free to pursue other things.” Such as? His shoots his eyes to the Iron Throne.

“Be no slouch” nghĩa là gì?

“Be no slouch” = không đi lừ đừ, vai thõng xuống -> nghĩa là rất siêng năng, cần cù, nhiệt huyết, tài giỏi.

Ví dụ
When it comes to making a WWE debut for a female superstar, you can do worse than sharing the ring with Charlotte Flair, Bayley and Natalya. This is what Sareena Sandhu gets for her debut (lần đầu ra mắt công chúng), as she teams with Charlotte Flair. She will be no slouch in the ring, having competed in Impact Wrestling, Tokyo Joshi Pro and DDT over her five year career, and could make a big impact tonight.

They will have a tough task ahead of them in trying to corral UConn. Especially if the Huskies attack with a similar offensive gameplan from Wednesday. Granted, this was a Hartford squad who a year ago had the best perimeter (vòng ngoài, vành đai) defense in the nation. Not just the America East, not just among the mid-majors, but the nation at large. Granted, there’s a strong chance that had lots to do with the presence of both Carter and Ellison. But they had solid numbers across the board, so they may be no slouch.

But just because I don’t eat doesn’t mean that food hasn’t been served in my house. I know this may seem really and truly odd to hear, but I, Patty, am no slouch in the kitchen. How is it that I know what kind of fare your standard human beings crave? Easy. They eat with gusto everything I decline. Butter is the chief component (thành phần) of all my recipes (công thức làm món ăn). And when preparing for others, I prepare with abandon. My rule of thumb: The serving size per person is in fact 12 to 14 times that indicated by the recipe. Also, before committing to an ingredient (thành phần), visit a multitude of greengrocers (người bán rau quả), out-of-the-way ethnic markets and vegetable stands to make sure that, say, the fiddlehead (mũi thuyền uốn cong như đầu viôlông) ferns (cây dương xỉ) are the best of their kind within a 200-mile radius (bán kính). If you must bolt up to Boston for your bibb (gỗ để đỡ cột buồm), so be it. I don’t know about you, but I require perfection in a dinner party.

“Be no picnic” nghĩa là gì?

“Be no picnic” = không như đi chơi đâu -> nghĩa là khó khăn, phiền nhiễu.

Ví dụ
After Tech faces the Big 12’s longest road trip, they will then head back out on the road on Saturday to face LSU on Saturday. That game will be no picnic as the Tigers are 10-4 overall and 8-1 at home on the season.

If you’ve ever applied for a mortgage (xin vay có thế chấp), you know it’s one of the most painful processes out there. Keeping up with payments and dealing with customer service over the course of the loan is no picnic either. So it’s no surprise that big bucks are being poured into the space with the goal of making the process easier, more digital and more transparent.

And domestic politics are no picnic either. In the 1920s, the white supremacist militant (cuộc chiến đấu của những người ủng hộ thuyết cho rằng người da trắng là ưu việt) group known as the Ku Klux Klan exercised clandestine (bí mật, giấu giếm) control over statehouses and local governments across the country. The 1990s saw several major incidents of far-right, anti-government violence, the most deadly being the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building in 1995, which killed 168 people. At the time, before September 11, it was the deadliest terrorist attack (cuộc tấn công khủng bố) on US soil.

“Be nip and tuck” nghĩa là gì?

“Be nip and tuck” -> nghĩa (lóng) là có khoảng cách suýt soát nhau nên khó đoán ai sẽ chiến thắng.

Ví dụ
Monsanto led all players with 13 points in the half as he was 5-of-7 from the field and knocked down three of his four attempts from beyond the arc. The opening six minutes were nip-and-tuck, but with the score knotted at 41, the Bucs rattled off six straight points as Patterson converted the old-fashioned three-point-play and Sloan hit Ty Brewer in the corner for a three, making it 47-41 with 12:29 remaining.

In all honesty, dropping that game to OSU didn’t really hurt the Hogs that much. It’ll be viewed as a “good loss” — a close one on the road — by the NCAA Selection Committee. However, the loss is troubling for the Razorbacks as they move forward. Even though it was a nip-and-tuck game, OSU dictated play to the Hogs down they stretch. The Cowboys got the shot they wanted from the player they wanted to put the game in their hands in the final seconds on their next to last offensive possession.

"There was a time earlier in my career that I would be entering a game like this that I knew was going to be nip and tuck and back and forth," he said. "And you knew for the next hour and a half it was going to be pins and needles. I went 15, 20 years of that, and it started to wear on me. I came close to losing the fun of it and walking away. But these ones aren't painful anymore. You know that nobody is running away from anybody.

It is hard to conclude differing approaches to testing are what has separated the two when the slumps are that steep. At Frankfurt the fall is sharper still: 70 per cent between January and September. Schiphol is much of a muchness at 68 per cent.

"That's what Manchester United were thinking when they played Sheffield United last night," said Johnson. "You can't take anything for granted. "You are only top of the league because consistently you have played a better game than the opposition. If you drop below the standard, as you saw at Premier League level, but especially at National League level where everything is a little bit more much of a muchness, you have got to go and perform better than the opposition.

“Be in fine fettle” -> nghĩa là trong tình trạng sức khỏe tốt, sung sức và tinh thần thoải mái, vui vẻ.

Ví dụ
It was a terrific (tuyệt vời, rất lớn, cực kỳ) Thursday for the Kennedy family as Jack's older brother Paddy continued his fine campaign by winning the beginners' chase on Rebel Gold for Danoli's trainer Tom Foley. The 4-1 shot was two-and-a-half-lengths too good for Antey and Tom's son Pat reported his hugely-popular father to be in fine fettle.

Mikel Arteta made it clear that he needs to work harder and fight for his starting spot – if he wants to cement (thắt chặt, gắn bó) his place in the team. The Gunners currently sit 9th in the EPL standings and are seven points off fourth-placed Liverpool and three points off sixth-placed Spurs. They have gone six games without a loss and have a mouth-watering rivalry standoff coming against Manchester United. They too have been in fine fettle but have lost their most recent PL encounter.

“Be no screaming hell” nghĩa là gì?

“Be no screaming hell” = địa ngục không nghe tiếng la hét -> nghĩa là không nổi bật hay ấn tượng gì cả.

Ví dụ
Well let me tell you it was no screaming hell yesterday, Feb 2nd. The entire downtown was a horror story-as were the main thoroughfares (đường phố lớn).

Boeing’s 747-8I is no screaming hell, but it’s certainly been outsold by the A380, which in every measurable factor from a passenger perspective, the A380 is a more comfortable aircraft than the 747-8.

Love It to Death was the first great Alice Cooper album, and it set the bar for his other stellar ’70s discs, like School’s Out, Killer, and Billion Dollar Babies. It’s the timeless tunes from those records that people want to hear when they go to an Alice Cooper show; they also want to see him get hanged, beheaded, and menaced by sexy nurses while wrapped in a straitjacket (áo bó). Ví dụ
United States Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his vice presidential pick Kamala Harris on Wednesday called Donald Trump an incompetent (kém cỏi, bất tài) leader who has left the country “in tatters”. They also called Trump the most “whining president in American history”.

With Congress poised to pass a major rescue package to counteract an inevitable (không tránh khỏi) coronavirus catastrophe (tai ương, thảm họa), a vital vulnerability (tổn thương, gây hại đến sự sống còn) remains hanging with the 2020 election. As Americans become increasingly concerned by the worst case scenarios (viễn cảnh) of millions of deaths and widespread economic collapse (sự sụp đổ, suy thoái kinh tế), worrying about voting seems relatively quaint (kỳ quặc, lạ). However, if the federal election does not happen in November, which at this moment in time is not impossible, the Constitution will be left in tatters.
