"If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" nghĩa là gì?

về với đội của anh. Photo by: Massimo Sartirana on Unsplash

"If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" nghĩa là nếu không thể hạ được đối thủ thì bạn nên sát cánh cùng họ, làm những công việc họ làm.

Ví dụ
In the candid (vô tư, không thiên vị) interview (phỏng vấn), the director also spoke of his love for spy thrillers (phim gián điệp) and even said he was once close to taking the director's chair for the most iconic spy of them all, but it never quite materialised (thành hiện thực). He said: "I nearly directed a Bond [film]. And I didn't get the chance, but you know, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em... or if you can't join 'em, beat 'em, whatever the expression is. "So yeah, I love spy movies, I love Austin Powers, In Like Flint, Bourne, 24, you name it. I'm an espionage freak (kẻ cuồng gián điệp), so this was my version." The King's Man is set to be released in February 2020.

But as they say, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, and that’s exactly what the rapper did. Iggy conceded (được thừa nhận) by sharing a collab vid where Peppa plays a rap by the Aussie singer and it’s the mother of all mashups.

There's another reason too. Why should I watch foreigners (người ngoại quốc) come here at, say, 55, kick back for 10 years and sign up for the pension (lương hưu) for the next 30 years without working here or without building this country or contributing (cống hiến) to it. Bugger it, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. And politicians (chính trị gia) who now mess with this model are dead meat. Hey, here's a deal, work longer! Argh no.

"Beat the crap out of someone" nghĩa là gì?

"Beat the crap out of someone" = đánh ai vãi cứt -> (thô tục) tấn công/đánh ai rất dã man, tàn bạo.

Ví dụ
The crowd started chanting 'You can't wrestle (đấu vật)' before Shane showed us footage from the last time KO quit the company on RAW. The man in question, Kevin Owens finally walked out to defend himself and said that the footage from the lowest point of his career. He said he was a different man now and added that he was going to beat the crap out of Shane at SummerSlam.

One of the things about the Bond series is that Daniel Craig is ripped beyond belief (trên cả tưởng tượng) and he can beat the crap out of anyone, so at least that part of the movie is plausible (hợp lý). If you're talking about somebody who is a bowling ball of a human going into other people and breaking them up, that makes a lot more sense, there's less suspension of disbelief along those lines, if it turns out that the hero is actually physically large. And that is one aspect (khía cạnh) of James Bond.

"The retaliation (sự trả thù) reported from several inmates (tù nhân) was that the guards had swarmed (đánh hội đồng) my son and the other two gentlemen's cells, put their heads in the toilet, beat the crap out of them, and put them in solitary confinement (biệt giam)," she says. "Since then, I have not had any communication with my son."

"Beat the pants off" nghĩa là gì?

Yeahhhh, chúng ta thắng rồi!!!! Photo by: Vince Fleming on Unsplash

"Beat the pants off" = đánh tụt quần -> câu lóng cho thấy việc đánh cho đối thủ thất bại thảm hại, bết xê lết, hủy diệt đối thủ.

Who’s to say that Florida doesn’t go to Baton Rouge to face and injury-riddled (làm chấn thương) LSU and beat the pants off them? Or, Jake Fromm has an off game and the Gators take advantage (tận dụng thời cơ) and rip Georgia in Jacksonville?

In 1964, the players were getting $11 a day meal money and asked the owners for $17 as a way to start negotiating (đàm phán). The owners told them to buzz off (biến đi). “And that’s when we went out and got Marvin,” said Bouton. The game hasn’t been the same since Miller came in and beat the pants off the owners almost daily. Miller, of course, SHOULD be in the Hall of Fame.

But when the world got their hands on (chạm tay vào) the S 1000 RR, everyone realised that they couldn’t be more wrong! The original S 1000 RR turned out to be an absolute masterpiece (hoàn toàn là một tuyệt tác). Upon its launch in the market (sự trình làng), the S 1000 RR instantly became the top-dog of the litre-class segment (phân khúc moto 1000cc). It beat the pants off its rivals (đối thủ) and did it quite relentlessly (không ngừng). On top of that, it was the first superbike to introduce electronic rider aids (hỗ trợ điện tử cho người lái) like traction control (kiểm soát lực kéo) and quick-shifter (sang số nhanh). The S 1000 RR was a phenomenon (hiện tượng) in every sense of the word.

"Smell fishy" nghĩa là gì?

Mùi gì mà tanh tanh thế? Photo by nattarin kraiwachirasit

"Smell fishy" = Nghe mùi tanh như cá -> Nghi ngờ điều gì đó sai trái, không hợp lý hoặc nghi ngờ ai đó sống hai lòng.

Ví dụ
I smell something fishy here...they were "users" not dealers (người trao đổi, giao dịch)...how could they afford the drugs in the first place? who... sold it to them... that's who the authorities should be going after.

To evade (tránh khỏi) such frauds (lừa đảo), we coincide with (trùng khớp với) the researchers — as soon as you smell something fishy related to your credit card or debit card (thẻ ghi nợ), contact the credit reporting agencies immediately.

But Paul Jones, Utah County deputy attorney (luật sư giám hộ), told the commission (hội đồng, ủy ban) that the law is not clear about whether that could be seen as initiating a process to change the government in bad faith. Jones said that's the case even if the timing does "smell fishy or doesn't look quite right."

"Below the belt" nghĩa là gì?

"Below the belt" = dưới thắt lưng -> ý chỉ lời nói, hành động mang tính không công bằng, không đúng luật, có nghĩa gần với cụm từ tiếng việt "chơi bẩn". Cụm này bắt nguồn từ môn quyền anh trong đó hành động đấm đối phương phía dưới thắt lưng là phạm luật.

Ví dụ
It's not unusual (bất thường) for presidential candidates (ứng cử viên tổng thống) to attack each other below the belt during election campaigns (chiến dịch bầu cử).

Josh McGuire’s sledge (lời trêu chọc, khiêu khích) to Blake Ferguson has been described as both “below the belt” and “defamatory (phỉ báng)”, setting up an intriguing (hấp dẫn) face-off (đối mặt) the next time the Origin stars meet.

In sports, nobody likes a “dirty” player — someone who hits below the belt, or someone who tries to knock the quarterback (tiền vệ) out of the game by ramming (nện) a helmet (mũ bảo hiểm) into his knee (đầu gối).

Why figuring out (tìm ra) your arguing (tranh luận) style is the key to a happy relationship (mối quan hệ)? Some styles, like hitting below the belt or invalidation (chối bỏ, không thừa nhận) are especially destructive (tiêu cực) approaches (cách tiếp cận) to arguing. Other styles maybe more productive (hiệu quả) ultimately (sau cùng).

"Waifs and strays" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Jesse Schoff

"Waifs and strays" -> Chỉ những đứa trẻ bơ vơ, vô gia cư trong thành phố và sống nơi đầu đường xó chợ. Ngoài ra cũng chỉ những người và con vật sống lang thang và không nơi cư ngụ.

Ví dụ
In a world where David and Sal took in all sorts of waifs and strays, it feels like their relationship with their children was sometimes forgotten.

“They gathered up all the waifs and strays from the town and they said okay, you’re in a music course now,” Murdoch says. David doesn’t romanticize (lãng mạn hóa) it — he describes it as a “refugee camp (kỳ trại cho người tị nạn) for unemployed musicians.” Murdoch remembers the music they were making as “terrible,” but “the only game in town,” at a time when he had few other options.

I forgive my mum for everything because she wasn’t all to blame. She has a heart of gold and would love to rescue all the animals, waifs and strays of the world but her need for alcohol overrides (cho là quan trọng hơn) her love and passions for everything else.

"Set the tone" nghĩa là gì?

"Set the tone" = Tạo âm sắc -> Tạo cảm hứng/cảm xúc, không khí, cảnh vật cho ai/điều gì.

Ví dụ
JOHANNESBURG – Kaizer Chiefs’ performance against Orlando Pirates in the Carling Black Label Cup tomorrow afternoon will set the tone for the team next season.

This week, some wine recommendations (sự gợi ý, giới thiệu) for when you're heading out and wanting a splash (sự bắn tóe) of something proper to set the tone.

A substitution made by Neil Lennon during Celtic’s 5-0 win over Nomme Kalju may set the tone for the season ahead and the style of football Lennon wants to introduce to the club. When Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo went off in the first-half, Lennon could have replaced (thay thế) the player with Jonny Hayes. A player who can play in both defence and attack (chơi cả vị trí phòng ngự và tấn công).

"Have heart stand still" nghĩa là gì?

Em đồng ý. Photo by Akshar Dave

"Have one's heart stand still" -> Trái tim ngừng đập vì bị sốc hoặc bị tác động mạnh về mặt cảm xúc, giống kiểu ai đó/điều gì làm trái tim chết lặng.

Ví dụ
A MODEL mum-of-two (mẹ của hai đứa con) has told how she nearly died of a BROKEN HEART after she had her heart stand still twice following a break up (sau một cuộc chia ly, cách biệt).

But for now, I have signed my license (giấy phép) and talked to my family about my wishes. I’d like to think when having my heart stand still I could give someone the chance to keep on breathing, to keep on laughing, to keep on loving and to keep on enjoying this magic thing we call life. It’s perhaps the greatest gift we have the power to give.

But in the 10 minutes and 38 seconds after she has her heart stand still, her mind continues to whirr (tiếng kêu vù vù), ranging over her memories, their scents (mùi hương) and flavours (mùi thơm).

"A bundle of joy" = Một chùm niềm vui -> Một em bé mới chào đời, trẻ sơ sinh.

Ví dụ
Her mum Ashleigh said she is a “bundle of joy” and told how the transplant (cấy ghép) had enabled the family “to have a life together”.

But despite the horrors she has endured (chịu đựng), Maggie is still a bundle of joy and love, greeting everyone she meets as a new friend.

ALTHOUGH she was born with a rare skin condition, for her parents little Maleke Pieters is nothing short of a bundle of joy they were blessed with.

"They will not think your new baby is a bundle of joy. Things aren't the way they used to be, and you aren't the way you used to be." So, they will act out, both to get your attention, and because they literally can't help themselves," Dr. Markham tells Romper.

"Balls to the wall" nghĩa là gì?

Tốc độ tối đa, không ngại thử thách. Image by intographics from Pixabay

"Balls to the wall" nghĩa là hết tốc lực, hết sức mình, không chần chừ, do dự.

“I have no parachutes (dù)—this is how I am,” he says. “I go balls to the wall for everything.”

‘Avengers: Endgame’ Is an Emotional (xúc động), Balls-to-the-Wall Finale (phần kết thúc) to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Wrestling (đấu vật) styles will range from traditional to hardcore (cực kỳ mạnh, bạo lực), but a 'balls to the wall' attitude (thái độ) is essential (thiết yếu).

The History of the Marvel Universe is basically a vehicle (phương tiện) for Rodríguez and López to go all-out, balls to the wall with iconic (kinh điển) characters and moments from the Marvel U, and the first installment (phần trình chiếu), in chronicling (ghi chép biên niên sử) the earliest moments of the universe, give the two artists some of the most vivid (sống động), wildest (dữ dội) material to work with.

"The calm after a storm" nghĩa là gì?

Tuyết mùa hè. Photo by Jack Cohen

"The calm after a storm" = khoảng lặng sau cơn bão -> Khoảng thời gian trong suốt quá trình mà mọi thứ được cải thiện, tiến bộ và vượt qua sau một thời gian khó khăn, hỗn độn và áp lực.

Ví dụ
The home fans are momentarily (ngay tức khắc) silenced, the calm after a storm. It looked to be happening again. The Mariners had gone 1-0 heading into the break, and yet conceded (thua) a soft goal from a corner deep into the second half.

As she sings “Secretly I'd hoped you were better than that” the band deliver a bittersweet, melancholic (u sầu, u buồn) sound that feels like the calm after a storm.

“A Human Kind Of Life was the type of song that needed to be approached with serious intent. With a firm idea of where the band was to show restraint (sự ràng buộc, câu thúc) and then where they were to come on like a rollicking (ầm ĩ) freight (cước phí) train. The plan was simple – get familiar with the arrangement within a few takes. Colin, hunched over a microphone, pouring the songs true nature out with an emotive vocal styling that has experienced almost everything that is a human kind of life. It was simple, it was like the calm after a storm. The tape machine rolled for 20 seconds after the close of the song in silence, with no one wanting to breathe again.”

"Kiss my feet" nghĩa là gì?

Xin Ngài hãy dẫn dắt con. Photo by Ben White

"Kiss (one's) feet" = Hôn lên chân ai đó -> Qùy gối cầu xin sự giúp đỡ, ân huệ từ ai.

Ví dụ
“If a coach takes a team to the Finals four out of five years, I’ll kiss his feet on Fear Factor. With cheese on it. I would. It will never be done again."

A mother was distraught (quẫn trí, điên cuồng) after seeing a video of bullies (bắt nạt) holding a gun to her 13-year-old son’s head and demanding he kiss their feet.

If these complainants (những người phàn nàn) are hoping that a big corporation will make its apologies and swoop in to kiss their feet, they’re in for a big surprise. It isn’t that complaints are unimportant, but it’s easy to recognize when the complaint is legitimate (hợp pháp, chính đáng) and when it’s being made out of ignorance or contempt (sự khinh bỉ); it’s also easy to spot when the person at fault isn’t the medical staff but the rather larger context of our health system.

"Come with receipts" nghĩa là gì?

Anh đã bị bắt vì tội đi quá tốc độ. Photo by: subspaceaddict71 on flickr

"Come with receipts" = kèm theo biên lai -> đưa ra bằng chứng về việc gì, bác bỏ điều ai vừa nói hoặc tuyên bố.

Ví dụ
"We are ready to take action on the matatu saccos involved...we have asked all those with complaints (lời phàn nàn) to come with receipts showing they have been overcharged (bị tính phí quá cao) but, unfortunately, no one has come," Ichami said.

Sure, a lot of parents might have already gone out to buy the DVD/Blu-ray copy of Infinity War for their Marvel obsessed offspring (con cháu), but that's why purchases come with receipts and shops have returns policy. Don't worry too much about it.

Unfortunately, Jessica doesn’t come with receipts, so we can only imagine the best player in baseball blowing up her phone with one-sided “Babe! Babe! A BOMB CYCLONE babe!” texts. But she can take comfort (thư giãn) in knowing that if Mike’s phone ever gets hacked, it’ll probably make for the dullest gossip ever (tin đồn nhạt nhẽo nhất).

"Touchy-feely" nghĩa là gì?

Xin Chúa ngự vào lòng này. Photo by Courtney Clayton

"Touchy-feely" -> Chỉ người thiên về cảm xúc nhiều hơn lý trí, họ dễ động lòng, rũ lòng thương xót, nhanh khóc vui buồn các kiểu và rất nhạy cảm. Ngoài ra, họ hay âu yếm, thể hiện tình cảm với người khác bằng những hành động ôm ấp, thân mật quá đà và dễ khiến đối phương không thoải mái.

Ví dụ
While the snap came with plenty of style, it likewise (cũng như thế) offered some pretty touchy-feely body language.

The Wahlbergs clearly love each other, and this fact seeps from every surface in an unabashed (không nao núng, bối rối), touchy-feely, American way that sits curiously with us in Blighty, where it’s only really necessary to emote (biểu lộ cảm xúc quá khích) at family members if someone gets cancer, though even then a firm, stoic (người khắc kỷ) handshake should suffice (đủ cho, đáp ứng nhu cầu).

Newsweek, which changed hands a few years ago for the grand total of a buck, is now promoting the idea that the left-wing Antifa is basically a harmless organization. This promotion of a touchy-feely Antifa was done via a guest columnist named Tae Phoenix who is described as "a singer-songwriter who uses music as a community organizing tool. She organizes with the Poor People's Campaign and Indivisible (không chia tách được), among others."

"Give her a dingle" nghĩa là gì?

Oh, xinh vại... Photo by Leon Seibert

"Give (someone) a dingle" = Đưa cho ai một thung lũng nhỏ và sâu -> Gọi điện thoại cho ai đó.

Ví dụ
The woman handed Lydon her ID, which confirmed that she was not DeGuio. And he prepared to give a dingle he knew would be devastating (phá phách, phá hủy).

Blanca and Martiza try to give a lawyer a dingle outside, but, you have to pay to use the phones in the center, and no one has any money on hand for a calling card (and when they do find the means to make a call, the machine is broken).

"Most of the time he was asleep so he wouldn't feel hungry," Galan said. Additionally, Galicia said, he was constantly harassed (bị quấy rối) by officers trying to coerce him into signing a deportation order (ép anh ta phải ký một thủ tục trục xuất). And each time he asked to give his mother a dingle to let her know where he was, "the officers told him that he had no right to an attorney (luật sư, người bào chữa) while he was in Border Patrol custody (sự giám hộ) and no right to make a phone call," she added.

"Take him for a fool" nghĩa là gì?

Em ơi, em hãy ở lại. Photo by Thomas Griesbeck

"Take (one) for a fool" -> Thừa nhận/cho là ai đó rất ngu ngốc, đần độn và như một tên ngốc.

Ví dụ
He has no intention (không có ý định) of marrying you. He is already tied up (đã có chủ rồi, hoa đã có chậu). So, stop allowing him to take you for a fool.

Well, that escalated (leo thang) quickly. After saving Seg’s life, and offering to overthrow (đánh bại) Zod, Brainiac decides to take over Seg’s body. I can’t hardly blame him; Seg tries to take him for a fool. But I think Brainiac knows Seg far too well, and realized our hero would never take him to the skull (bộ đầu lâu) ship. Still, Brainiac would have honored their deal. Or so he said. Instead, he’s decided to become a Brainiac Dad, and kidnapper (kẻ bắt cóc).

But don’t let her take you for a fool, as Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said. Fowles might roll her eyes (đảo mắt), but it matters. “If she hadn’t been an All-Star she would have been [upset],” Reeve said. “She might be a little more tempered. But when you’re older, and you know the end is near, you start to value these things.”

"Pay through the nose" nghĩa là gì?

Tận hưởng cuộc sống Photo by Ishan @seefromthesky on Unsplash

'Pay through the nose' = trả bằng mũi.

We have over-stressed the importance and attraction of a college education to our young people, given them unrealistic (thiếu thực tế) expectations and made them pay through the nose for it. And at the same time we’ve devalued (giảm giá trị) education by doing this.

However, luxury retailers have known for a hot minute that sneaker enthusiasts will pay through the nose on the resale (bán lại) market for new (or rare) offerings, which is true when it comes to other varietals of streetwear as well: the Supreme resale market is by now so vast and saturated (bão hòa), someone once wrote a novel about it.

"We need telcos also to be financially sound. They cannot pay through the nose for spectrum auction (một loạt các cuộc đấu giá). Again, it is not an area of my expertise but my personal view is that we need to relook at the whole auction architecture, not only in spectrum but also in mining and other areas," Niti Aayog Special Secretary Yaduvendra Mathur said.

"Make ends meet" nghĩa là gì?

Làm sao để bán hết sách bây giờ? Photo by Na Urchin from Pexels

'Make ends meet' -> nghĩa là kiếm đủ sống, đủ chi trả những nhu cầu trong cuộc sống. Từ ends ám chỉ tổng thu chi, nhưng theo bác sĩ hải quân và là tiểu thuyết gia Tobias Smollett, từ ends liên quan tới việc nối, bện hai đầu dây (ends) của dây thừng trên thuyền để tiết kiệm chi phí.

Ví dụ
The proposed new rule from the USDA is just the latest Trump administration attack on hard-working American families trying to make ends meet and could take food out of the mouths of 3 million Americans

Many of these hardships (khó khăn) were detailed in a 2017 report by the Pennsylvania Economy League, which called for legislators to give municipalities (tự trị) more flexibility in levying (thu) fees and taxes to make ends meet.

According to the South Carolina Department of Agriculture, smaller farms in the Palmetto State are turning to agritourism (du lịch nông nghiệp) to make ends meet. They say more than 400 farms offer some form of agritourism, ranging from corn mazes, goat yoga, educational tours and everything in between.

"Pierce my heart" nghĩa là gì?

Trái tim em nhỏ bé lắm. Photo by Brigitte Tohm

"Pierce (one's) heart" = Xuyên qua tim ai đó -> Tác động tới cảm xúc và làm ai đó xúc động sâu sắc đặc biệt là có chuyện buồn hay điều hối tiếc làm tan nát cõi lòng.

Ví dụ
It’s only words? No! Words are like arrows (mũi tên) slung (bắn) from the bow (cái cung) and when they find their mark, they pierce your heart.

As hard charging (sự mở mang) as you may believe yourself to be, there may be many catastrophic (thảm họa) events that are sure to pierce your soul and perforate (đục thủng) your heart. Every cop has a tipping point that may drop them to their knees, unforeseen emotions flooding back with a tidal (thủy triều) wave of vengeance (sự báo thù) that toss you into a tailspin (sự tụt xuống) and bludgeon (cái dùi) your soul.

I hold my breath in grim (nhẫn tâm) anticipation (sự đề phòng, lường trước). I already know what I’ll see when I look at the photo—the description alone is enough to pierce my heart, and part of me thinks I should avoid the image altogether. But it’s a privilege to avoid seeing the true human toll and tragedy of life as a refugee (người tị nạn), particularly at the U.S. border these days, so I look.

"Stand (one) in good stead" -> Điều gì đó có lợi, tốt cho ai đó hoặc giúp đỡ được ai. Cụ thể là những trải nghiệm, kỹ năng hay tài năng.

Ví dụ

"Nice going" -> Để đưa ra lời khen, tán dương khi ai đó đã thực hiện tốt và thành công một việc, tương tự như "Good job", "Good going", "Nice job".

Ví dụ
But, sometimes, the only thing that comes out of my mouth is "nice going!" This is a lovely thing to say.

“It was a good effort at Newmarket. It was a good step up and I liked he was so strong the last furlong and so strong through the line. It’s nice going forward.”

"Nice going!" on a 20-minute presentation is nice, but when you point out specific things, it can bring the focus in. Plus, it lets your employees know the best part. Make sure you don't use this as a "feedback sandwich" where you are merely giving praise so you can criticize (chỉ trích) next. Everyone hates the feedback sandwich.

Ví dụ

Ví dụ

Ví dụ
Hundreds of tents (cái lều) sway to and fro in the cold wind; heavy rain pours down on them, and there is only mud (bùn) underfoot.

“It’s almost as good as winning a trophy, qualifying for the Champions League. This is the first step in hopefully achieving that. The game will sway to and fro and they’re going to be tight. We’ve no divine (thần thánh, siêu phàm) right to get into the Champions League, but from our perspective (triển vọng) it’d be massive (to lớn) for the club to qualify.”

Her velvety vocals (thanh âm mượt mà, nhẹ nhàng) gracefully sway to and fro over a rich steel-guitar foundation. There's an airy wistfulness to Ortega's delicate, tender and captivating voice. The icing on the cake for the number is the soaring harmonica contributions from Grammy-winning musician Charlie McCoy.
