"Raise the white flag" nghĩa là gì?

"Raise the white flag" = phất/vẫy cờ trắng -> nghĩa là đầu hàng, bị đánh bại/khuất phục..

Ví dụ
In 2019, the unifying (thống nhất) symbol of our country has become a red flag for grievances (bất bình) both past and present. Enough Americans now view the Betsy Ross flag as a sign of repression (ngăn chặn) for Nike to raise the white flag of surrender and withdraw the Air Max 1 USA shoe from the market. This says more about modern American values than it does about the values upon which America was founded.

The visitors were first to raise the white flag in the second half with two scores from Cathal Doherty and Joe McKinney. Hunter added to his first half tally with a good strike (tấn công) from the right. This was followed by two McBrearty scores, one from a free.

It’s time to raise the white flag regarding (về việc) this year’s attempted countywide reassessment and we implore (cầu khẩn) the Tax Commission to show Bannock County officials some mercy (nhân từ) by agreeing that in order to restore the community’s confidence in its county government, a fresh start is needed.

"Don't take any wooden nickels" nghĩa là gì?

"Wooden nickels" siêu to, siêu khổng lồ! Photo courtesy Shawneen G

"Don't take any wooden nickels" = đừng lấy xu gỗ -> có nghĩa là đừng làm điều ngu ngốc, đừng để bị lừa. Câu nói trở nên phổ biến từ những năm 1900 bởi nạn làm đồng xu giả ("wooden nickels").

Ví dụ
The adage (ngạn ngữ) goes, “don’t take any wooden nickels” but this one won’t fit in your pocket even if you try.

Remember when ‘Don’t take any wooden nickels’ meant ‘Don’t do anything stupid?’ And when ‘That’s my cup of tea’ meant you found something you like?

Nothing stays the same. Hold on and don’t take no wooden nickels. Seasons change. Nothing is perfect, so hold on, and it’ll get away from you. Don’t give up!

Under most circumstances (trường hợp) one should avoid wooden nickels, as in, “don’t take any…” However, special Westfield 350th Anniversary wooden nickels are a different matter.

"The Fourth Estate" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Alejandro Escamilla on Unsplash

"The Fourth Estate" có từ estate là đẳng cấp -> từ này nghĩa là giới báo chí; 'đẳng cấp thứ tư', 'quyền lực thứ tư' đó các bạn :).

Ví dụ
A sneak-peek (lén lút) at the reporting (báo cáo) of this epoch-making event in independent India’s political history and constitutional realms (lĩnh vực hiến pháp) by the fourth estate tells a different tales: While the country’s leading English dailies like the Times of India, Indian Express, The Economic Times, The DNA, The Pioneer, The Tribune, The Statesman, The New Indian Express have captioned the big story in front page as ‘bold’ and ‘historic’, the lone dissenter (người bất đồng) has been the Kolkata based English daily The Telegraph, which has captioned the game-changer decision in all caps as ‘PARTITION’ of minds and a State.

The fourth estate, an independent media that holds power to account, is reduced to the role of government scribe (người sao chép bản thảo) in China, the Gulf and other autocracies (chế độ chuyên quyền). The media is similarly on the defensive in democracies such as the United States, Hungary, India, Turkey, Russia, and the Philippines.

In fact, have we forgotten that part of the 14th general election was fought on the basis of curtailing (cắt ngắn) some of the unfettered excesses (thừa quá mức) of past prime ministers? The cabinet, the Parliament, the civil service, the royalty and the fourth estate are supposed to provide checks and balances.

"Tell fortunes" nghĩa là gì?

Chuyện ngày mai đã có ngày mai, bói với toán làm gì? Photo by  Jose Antonio Gallego Vázquez

"Tell fortunes" -> Xem bói, coi bói để biết chuyện của tương lai.

Ví dụ
The Brit ace revealed: “The night before the fight I dreamed I was knocked down and got up but I never saw the result in the dream. “Before the fight I even my told my trainer Ben that I would have to get up off the canvas to win. “My nan used to tell fortunes and sometimes I get dreams and visions that come true."

National Urban League President Marc Morial told Fortune in an email that he expects that the four Democratic candidates now slated to appear at the group’s conference will address the president’s comments. The meeting starts Thursday in Indianapolis.

Undoubtedly, the so-called men of God are motivated by power and wealth and nothing else! For we can verify this assertion (sự khẳng định) from Micah 3:9 [NIV] “Hear this, you leaders of the house of Jacob, you rulers of the house of Israel, who despise justice and distort (xuyên tạc) all that is right”; Micah 3:10 [NIV] who build Zion with bloodshed (sự đổ máu), and Jerusalem with wickedness (tính độc ác). Micah 3:11 [NIV] Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests (linh mục) teach for a price, and her prophets (nhà tiên tri) tell fortunes for money. Yet they lean upon the LORD and say, "Is not the LORD among us? No disaster will come upon us."

"Funny money" nghĩa là gì?

Ai cần không? Photo by  Jp Valery

"Funny money" = Tiền chùa/tiền vui chơi -> Tiền giả, tiền chỉ được dùng ở một nơi cụ thể hoặc tờ ngoại tệ.

Ví dụ
CHERRY VALLEY, Ark. (KAIT) - Some funny money is making the rounds in Cherry Valley. The police department stated on social media Wednesday that officers confiscated (bị tịch thu) several counterfeit $100 bills during a Monday traffic stop.

The Shelby Township Police Department is seeking the public’s help to identify a group of people. Police say the “merry band” paid for a bill with some “funny money.” Their bill was $137. It happened at Nick’s 22nd Street located at 48900 Van Dyke Ave.

Visitors also can see the first public exhibit of a recently discovered $2 million California Gold Rush-era gold coin, as well as displays of a fabled (nói bịa) 1804-dated U.S. silver dollar insured for $4 million, historic ancient coins, and examples of “funny money” blunders (người khờ khạo) — $1 through $100 denomination bills mistakenly printed with various errors, such as upside down or entirely missing serial numbers.

"Hit the skids" nghĩa là gì?

Đứt phanh mất tiêu rồi. Photo by  PhotoPum RanaRoja

"Hit the skids" = Trượt xuống dốc -> Đang trải qua thời kỳ khó khăn và suy giảm.

Ví dụ
FIZ Stape's Coronation Street comeback is going to hit the skids when a new woman comes between her and Tyrone Dobbs.

Most importantly, the index is a true leading indicator: It has historically shown signs of trouble before the broader economy hit the skids.

Warrant dodgers (các tờ truyền đơn có giấy phép) “hit the skids” during operations in Delft, Manenberg, Mfuleni and Kraaifontein between Thursday and Sunday, said the City’s safety and security mayoral committee member, JP Smith, on Monday.

Rondon, 25, was a promising utility prospect in the Padres system from 2014-17, but hit the skids in the high minors and couldn’t steady himself after transitioning to the AL with the White Sox. Rondon did post a solid 102 wRC+ in limited action for the Pale Hose last season, but his .197/.265/.282 ’19 line wasn’t enough to keep him in the organization. He appeared in just a single game for the Orioles; the club’ll obviously hope he clears waivers and can be outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk.

"Hit and miss" nghĩa là gì?

Vào hay không? Photo by Jannes Glas

"Hit and miss" -> Thành công hoặc thất bại, được chăng hay chớ.

Ví dụ
The campaign clocks in at about six hours, which is quite lengthy for a VR title, but the efforts to lengthen one's time with it are hit-and-miss.

For this reason, prevention strategies can be hit and miss. Moreover, healthcare professionals have no clear way of determining a person's rate of cognitive (dựa trên kinh nghiệm, hiểu biết) decline once a doctor has diagnosed them with Alzheimer's.

It's a good idea to grab the rain gear today. But, you still may stay dry. Hit-or-miss showers and thunderstorms are expected for Tuesday in coastal Mississippi. Today's high temperatures will range from the upper 80s to the lower 90s. If it rains at all today at your location in South Mississippi, the main timing for the coastal counties (vùng duyên hải) will be in the morning before and around sunrise and then once again in the afternoon and evening hours. Instead, main timing for rain today for the inland counties will be just this afternoon and evening, probably not in the morning. Frequent lightning, gusty (giông tố) winds, and heavy rainfall will be possible with any stronger storms today. Chances for hit-or-miss thunderstorms will continue into Wednesday and Thursday.

"Dumb as a post" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Timo Wagner

"Dumb as a post" = Im như cột điện -> Rất ngu dốt, ngốc nghếch.

Ví dụ
Steve Bannon and Donald Trump have had their ups and downs. Bannon helped secure Trump’s electoral victory, but also frequently angered the president, including by calling his daughter Ivanka “dumb as a post.”

Hate him or like him, he is the president of the United States, the most powerful person in the world. You do not want him tweeting, "I don't know why I appointed dumb-as-a post Powell." And, then, from now until he's fired, Powell will be known as "Post Powell."

Thompson was caught unusually quickly after the breach and had made no attempt to hide her tracks, which makes her either misunderstood or dumb as a post. She told fellow developers on the site that she was dumping the data, still encrypted (cài mã), so it was off her computer as she wanted nothing to do with it.

"Go like clockwork" nghĩa là gì?

Xe đạp vẫn quay đều. Photo by Tayo Vidal

"Go like clockwork" = Đều đặn như một cái máy -> Mọi việc vẫn đi theo đúng như kế hoạch và tiến bộ đều đặn mà không gặp phải rắc rối nào.

Ví dụ
To tidy up the human mess and not destroy the planet further with senseless wars requires a tyrant (bạo chúa, kẻ bạo ngược), an absolute ruler, with a plan that works like clockwork. You’ve never going to make it trying to influence those clowns in Washington.

My first miscarriage (sự sẩy thai) took me completely by surprise. My body had always worked like clockwork, and I'd assumed it would efficiently produce a healthy child. But then the technician explained to my husband and me at our first ultrasound (siêu âm) that while I had a gestational (thai nghén) sac, there was no embryo inside it. "Lights on, nobody home" is how I couldn't help thinking about it.

This happens like clockwork once every four years, to be fair. Who will be our celebrity presidential outreach in 2023? Will the Stranger Things kids still be a thing, or will a rush of puberty (dậy thì) have made them wonky (lung lay) and unlikable? Will JoJo Siwa still be about or will a younger, even more cheerful YouTuber have risen up and drunk the blood straight out of her veins? There are more famous children now than at any time in history. This paragraph could have gone on for ever.

"Pardon me for breathing" nghĩa là gì?

Tha thứ cho tớ nhá. Photo by  Abo Ngalonkulu

"Pardon me for breathing" = Xin lỗi vì đã thở -> Sự phản ứng lại đầy tức giận và điên lên khi bạn bị chỉ trích và khiển trách một cách vô lý và không công bằng.

Ví dụ
Marvin: “Sorry, did I say something wrong? Pardon me for breathing which I never do anyway so I don’t know why I bother to say it oh God I’m so depressed.”

Pardon me for breathing if you’ve read this before, but something and everything about that passage comes around again each January – even 60 years after Alan Sillitoe first wrote it. His 1959 novella The Loneliness of The Long-Distance Runner, a mere 40-page spread within a collection of short stories, is still among the best examples of running literature, if only fleetingly capturing the pure essence (bản chất trong sáng) and purpose of why people run.

May 21st. Another row with G. He blew my second candle out, he said one was enough. It wasn’t, though. I couldn’t see to read anymore. He drives me mad—it’s like living with a policeman. It always was, even before the Collapse. “The earth has enough for everyone’s need, but not for everyone’s greed” was his favorite. Nobody likes being labelled greedy. I called him Killjoy and he didn’t like that. “Every one of us takes about twenty-five thousand breaths a day,” he told me. “Each breath removes oxygen from the atmosphere and replaces it with carbon dioxide.” Well, pardon me for breathing! What was I supposed to do—turn into a tree?

"Wild and woolly" nghĩa là gì?

Ở đây nhìn tôi hơi quê nhưng ở quê tôi hơi bị ghê đấy. Photo by John Moeses Bauan

"Wild and woolly" = Hoang dại và mơ hồ -> Chỉ người chưa văn minh, vô đạo đức và cư xử điên rồ một cách không kiểm soát.

Ví dụ
It's clear the folks at Triumph had a lot of fun dreaming up this wild and woolly universe, which is further brought to life with lush (sự tươi mới), colorful visuals.

But it was the wild and woolly ’70s, when finding yourself sometimes meant losing everyone else, and her three friends seem to have accepted her absence (despite their broken hearts).

These sheep rides were part of the Wild and Woolly event at the Queen City Ex on Thursday afternoon, as the fair returned to its roots with a stronger emphasis on agriculture through a new partnership with the Canadian Western Agribition. The afternoon’s activities also featured a chance for kids to lead an alpaca (động vật thuộc loại lạc đà không bướu ở Nam Mỹ) through an obstacle course.

"Deja vu" nghĩa là gì?

Ta cứ đi tìm đi tìm. Photo by Larm Rmah

"Deja vu" = Trong tiếng Pháp nghĩa là "Đã nhìn thấy" hay "Ký ức ảo giác" -> Một cảm giác rất kỳ lạ, quen thuộc và y như đã từng trải qua.

Ví dụ
“It was like a deja vu,” Patricia told the Guardian, as she prepared to leave El Paso on Monday morning.

Déjà vu as Kosovo PM Haradinaj again resigns to face allegations of war crimes in The Hague, déjà vu too, regarding the lack of focus on victims, transitional justice, and reconciliation (sự tái hòa giải).

Exactly a decade later, a sense of déjà vu lurks (rình mò, ẩn nấp) over the case of another Nigerian cleric with no links to Boko Haram. Experts warn that the government’s treatment of this case could pose a serious security challenge in Nigeria and are urging authorities not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

There’s a whiff (luồng hơi) of deja vu in waking up to a portfolio trashed by an overnight tweet. Just as markets were getting cozy with a truce (sự tạm ngừng) in the U.S.-China trade war -- with an extra-soft low-rates cushion -- the conflict abruptly escalated. European investors began their day on edge as a presidential tweet announced the U.S. would levy (đánh thuế) a 10% tariff (thuế quan) on a further $300 billion in Chinese goods.

"Heavy mob" có từ mob là đám đông, bọn du thủ du thực -> từ này nghĩa là nhóm người có lực lượng mạnh được thuê để dẹp loạn hay các vụ bạo lực hoặc để bảo vệ người nào đó.

Ví dụ
Moment the heavy mob moved in on Leon Brittan's home - as victims of VIP abuse (sự lạm dụng) fantasist demand full force of law be turned on 'Nick' police after judge's bombshell (vấn đề làm xôn xao dư luận) intervention.

Two reporters -- one from The News Minute and one from the Republic TV -- were also attacked by anti-women protesters (người phản đối) when they had gone to cover the protests near Kerala's Sabarimala temple. Republic TV said its reporter Pooja Prasanna was surrounded by a 100-heavy mob. Saritha S Balan of The News Minute was "kicked on her spine" by a protestor, the website said.

"In the fullness of time" nghĩa là gì?

Ai mua tôi bán thời gian cho Photo by Andrey Grushnikov from Pexels

'In the fullness of time' -> tới thời điểm thích hợp, thời điểm có thể làm gì đó.

Ví dụ
“We do wonder in the fullness of time, ‘Can we be as big as YouTube?,’” Hastings said. “YouTube is seven times larger than us, roughly, in viewing hours, and a phenomenal service.

“I don’t think there’s a case that I’m not going to be discovered in the fullness of time,” Edward Snowden said from a hotel room in Hong Kong before he publicly came forward as the source.

China’s leaders may be preparing for a major confrontation (đối đầu) with the U.S. in the fullness of time, but they are not ready for it now. China has been very successful in gaming global trade flows, and she is harnessing (điều khiển, quản lý) her resources for the possible showdown some time later this century

"Jailhouse lawyer" nghĩa là gì?

"Jailhouse lawyer" = luật sư nhà tù -> người không học luật chính quy nhưng đủ biết để giúp người khác về vấn đề pháp lý.

Ví dụ
Tonight we are going to reintroduce (giới thiệu lại) you to Shon Hopwood, who is arguably (được cho là) the most successful jailhouse lawyer ever-having had one of his cases argued before the U.S. Supreme Court while serving a 12-year sentence for armed (có vũ trang) bank robbery.

Johnston, who said he acted as a sort of jailhouse lawyer to other inmates (tù nhân), said Beltran Leon decided he wanted to plead guilty (nhận tội) after he learned that Serrano might testify (làm chứng) against him at trial. During one conversation, Johnston said Beltran Leon held up his hand and made a “finger-pull motion,” similar to someone pulling the trigger on a gun.

Jailhouse lawyer Arthur Taylor's efforts to formally study law in Dunedin have hit a snag (gặp trở ngại). The University of Otago Law School has suggested he wait until the second semester, or next year, before attending class. In February, Taylor was released from Waikeria Prison on parole, where he had been serving a jail term of 17-and-a-half years.

"Nickel nurser" nghĩa là gì?

Chân dung người đàn ông đã kết hôn là đây. Photo courtesy Jim Forest

"Nickel nurser" hay "penny pincher" chỉ một người quá tiết kiệm đến mức keo kiệt và hà tiện. "Nickel" và "penny" đều là một loại đồng xu của Mỹ.

Ví dụ
However, I believe the Pentagon needs a penny pincher and not someone who thinks money grows on trees in charge of the checkbook.

Now I’m wishing I’d told my tightwad (kẻ hà tiện), nickel-nurser side to take a hike (biến mất). I should’ve gotten the full-size, because this ends too soon.

It would not be wrong to say that Elon Musk’s flamboyant (khoa trương) company has recently turned into a penny pincher while increasing the cost of some of its variants (biến thể).

With so many rare coins out there, being a “penny pincher” might not be such a bad thing after all. You never know, one of your pennies could be worth the price of a nice dinner — or a whole lot more.

“Not have two pennies to rub together” nghĩa là gì?

Aloo! Ví gọi, lương trả lời! Photo courtesy Payday Savvy

“Not have two pennies to rub together” = không có tiền, nghèo đến mức không có đến 2 đồng xu trong ví. “Penny” là một loại xu của Mỹ (penny = 1 cent)

Ví dụ
When we didn’t have two pennies to rub together, we were happy. Getting rich ruined (hủy hoại) our lives.

One of Anim's jokes from his Britain's Got Talent routine was about the dread (sợ hãi) of getting in to a taxi when you haven't got two pennies to rub together.

Muted hues will emit a more sophisticated vibe (cảm giác sành sỏi hơn), and will enable you to look like walking money, even if you haven’t got two pennies to rub together.

The 78-year-old said when he left Aberdeen at the age of 18, his family hardly had “two pennies to rub together”, and that he “couldn’t believe it” when he found out he was a related to royalty.

"Shoot in the foot" nghĩa là gì?

Cẩn thận không bắn vào chân mình đấy chàng trai :) Photo by: Kony Xyzx on Unsplash

"Shoot in the foot" = 'tự bắn vào chân mình' đó các bạn; tự làm hỏng kế hoạch, công việc của chính mình do nói hoặc có hành động ngu ngốc

Ví dụ
Interesting that the proposed (đề xuất) tax in East Palo Alto is about $625 per employee (nhân viên) (assuming 250 square feet per employee and the parcel tax at $2.50 per square foot). Mt View measure is capped out at $150 per employee. Shoot in the foot is an understatement – how about shoot in the head.

I’ve also lived in Oz. They’re actually not much different from us. And Ada is right. It would be a shoot-in-the-foot move for any Oz MP to argue (bàn tán) to keep Kiwi Kriminals (as Ada calls them) over there, when they can send them back here.

In the end, PPH could increase productivity (năng suất) by lowering autonomy and examination quality (chất lượng kiểm định), he said. Rather than investing in the patent office, efforts are concentrated (tập trung) on agreements “that undermine Brazil’s capacity to perform rigorous (nghiêm ngặt) and quality examination, relying on decisions made in other countries that have very different approaches toward patent examination criteria,” he said. It’s a “shoot in the foot” for Brazilian sovereignty, he said.

“Not worth a plug nickel” nghĩa là gì?

Thật giả lẫn lộn. Photo courtesy Josie Perlson

“Not worth a plug nickel” = chẳng đáng một xu -> vô dụng, không có giá trị. Đây là cách nói cũ từ những năm 1880, "plug" là những cái lỗ đục ở trên một đồng xu, sau đó được đổ đầy bằng một loại kim loại rẻ hơn -> làm giả tiền là phạm pháp -> vô giá trị. Thêm nữa, "nickel" cũng là một loại đồng xu có mệnh giá thấp ở thời điểm đó.

Ví dụ
'Mike Hughes’ chances of being ready for the season opener aren’t worth a plug nickel, because Vikings.

The Cowboys aren’t worth a plug nickel. When is the last time they went to the super bowl (Siêu cúp Bóng bầu dục Mỹ) ? As long as Jerry Jones is the owner they will be a losing organization.

As for the cost of operating the subways: Who not only benefits but absolutely depend on from the subways? Real estate ( bất động sản) owners of commercial buildings (tòa thương mại) in Manhattan. Without the subways, their buildings would be empty and not worth a plug nickel. So those owners should be responsible for the operating and maintaining (vận hành và bảo trì) of subways.

Photo by Chris Rhoads on Unsplash

"In blue blazes” được sử dụng sau từ để hỏi (“who, what, where, when, why, how”) để nhấn mạnh câu, biểu thị ý ngạc nhiên, bất ngờ hoặc tức giận. “Blue blazes” là ngọn lửa xanh, cực kỳ nóng, được sử dụng mang ý nhấn mạnh trong cụm từ này.

Ví dụ
When appraising (đánh giá) improvised (ứng biến) public remarks from Obama: “Our old speechwriters were all podcasting now. One of these days, I was going to have to ask someone what in blue blazes a ‘podcast’ was.”

In fact, Jerrold Nadler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee (Ủy ban Tư pháp Hạ viện) — which would hold the hearings — said he’s ready. So what in the blue blazes are we waiting for? Maybe the hearings will result in a vote of impeachment (luận tội), maybe they won’t.

This splashy amusement center (trung tâm vui chơi giải trí hấp dẫn) is ideal for all ages, thanks to a healthy mix of rides and thrilling attractions (điểm tham quan kỳ thú). It may be hard to cool off in a state that gets as hot as blue blazes, but Castaway Cove has got your back.

"Get off to a false start" nghĩa là gì?

Ơ, chúng nó chạy đâu hết rồi??? Photo by: Serghei Trofimov on Unsplash

"Get off to a false start" = khởi đầu sai lầm, cụm từ này xuất phát từ môn đua, khi ai đó xuất phát trước khi có hiệu lệnh.

Ví dụ
Bentham does most of his shopping at junk yards (bãi phế liệu) and scrap metal (sắt vụn) dealers. He likes to work with whatever catches his eye. He lets his purchases find their own way into projects, even if things sometimes get off to a false start.

"Sometimes you get off to a false start in tournaments (giải đấu)," he said. "But now we've got it together again and have rediscovered our team spirit (tinh thần). The great high that we experienced in the World Cup can be repeated again. It's hard for me. Not playing can seem easier, but mentally it's a lot more difficult. However, the guys know what they've got to do and they are mature (trưởng thành) enough to rise to the occasion."

Lufthansa did get off to a false start, promising in Nov-2011 to expand with its mainline brand in Berlin like "never before" with a promise of lower costs. But torrents (dòng nước lũ) of losses against the challenge of taking costs out of a FSC proved too overpowering (quá mạnh) to continue on this course (the number of success stories is small), so the story of expanding (mở rộng) in Berlin with Lufthansa has shifted (thay đổi) to Germanwings.

"Know what’s what" nghĩa là gì?

Giờ anh chị muốn tính sao? Em chờ :) Photo by Lukas from Pexels

'Know what’s what' = biết cái gì là cái gì -> biết, nhận thức được những chuyện gì đang xảy ra, sự thật quan trọng trong một vấn đề.

Ví dụ
It was 21 June 1975, and reader, I was there. I was 12, which may be the perfect age to be taken to your first big sporting event: tall enough to see, old enough to know what’s what, young enough to have an autograph book. My brother Charlie, who was 14, had caught the cricket bug and passed it on to me.

A lively exchange of ideas can be hugely enjoyable. At the moment, however, even a simple difference of opinion could lead to misunderstandings (hiểu nhầm), and possibly, hurt feelings. The trick is to, first, to focus on gathering information. Then, once you’ve all the facts, so know what’s what, discuss those issues in detail.

Ruth loves popcorn (bỏng ngô). But she has to work for it, by blowing air with her trunk through a white pipe attached to a barrel above her head to push it out. “Excellent sense of smell, so they know what’s what,” Milwaukee County Zoo director Chuck Wikenhauser said. “Whether it’s popcorn in there, whether it’s some other treat, they enjoy that.”

"Rob Peter to pay Paul" nghĩa là gì?

So our man in the White House is patting himself on the back because the Supreme Court overturned the ruling by lower courts to allow him to rob Peter to pay Paul. Peter being the Pentagon’s $2.5 billion to pay Paul (the wall).

“At some point, you have to sell, because we need some cash flow (dòng tiền) and when you’re selling at a loss, it’s just an ugly situation to be in,” Ziesch said. “If the price of soybeans is low because of tariffs (thuế quan), there’s not much I can do about it at some point,” Stafslien said. “You have to have cash flow just like any business. You may be selling at a loss just to rob Peter to pay Paul.”

I think the government will rob Peter to pay Paul in order to keep the program going. No lawmaker (người đề ra luật) will propose or vote for a bill that reduces or eliminates (giảm) benefits because it would be political suicide. Not saying that something shouldn’t be done to “fix” the system, but I cannot see lawmakers actually making the tough choices. They will indebt our country even more because their solution to every problem is to throw money at it hoping that will solve the problem.

"No names, no pack drill" nghĩa là gì?

Iain asked if he was talking about former Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson, to which the MP for Broadland said: "Well, no names, no pack drill as the army would say."

If I was getting onto an aeroplane (máy bay) say (no names, no pack drill) I would be much happier being suspended (tạm hoãn) in a state of modest uncertainty as to whether I would get to my destination than the certainty that it was going to crash just so I could plan for it. I’m sure you agree: certainty can be overrated (đánh giá cao).

Ciders, wines and spirits (tinh thần) are on the menu now — all chosen with the same care as the ales (cuộc chè chén). Others have borrowed features from the micropub’s close cousin, the bottle shop. Some have quizzes and live music. One (no names, no pack drill) even broke all the rules and put a TV in for the 2018 World Cup. What would the purists (người theo chủ nghĩa thuần túy) say?
