"Have a sneaking suspicion" nghĩa là gì?

Ê, làm theo tao cơ mà Photo by Marek Mucha from Pexels

'Have a sneaking suspicion' = có một sự nghi ngờ giấu kín -> có linh cảm hay trực giác liên tục về thứ gì đó

Ví dụ
After Show co-guest comedian Whitney Cummings has her own suspicions. “I have a sneaking suspicion she wants to be on television.” As she laughs, Kroll jokes (nói đùa) “Oh, do you?” Meanwhile, host Andy Cohen nods along. “Oh that’s interesting,” Kroll adds sarcastically.

“I feel a little bit sorry for those people because I think happy people don’t stay up till 3 a.m. online saying, ‘You’re ruining my childhood,'” she added. “But I also have a sneaking suspicion that they didn’t have a great childhood — and I’m not the one who ruined it.”

But the real reason Noah wanted to talk about the first lady is that he is starting to have a sneaking suspicion that President Trump is “trying to deport” Melania. “And you might be asking, why would he want to deport his wife?” The host said he didn’t know for sure, but suspected it might have something to do with their reported marital problems.

"Have a good name" nghĩa là gì?

'Have a good name' = có một cái tên tốt -> có danh tiếng tốt, sự tôn trọng về cái gì hay ở một nơi nào đó.

Ví dụ
Part of the very fun Indian Super League, Kerala Blasters have a good name and have been managed by former England goalkeeper David James… twice!

“Boeing also want to show they have a good name, but they could be putting the victims at risk,” he said, adding he did not oppose Boeing supporting charities, but that it could be done more discreetly (thận trọng).

“We build top class houses because of the materials we are using. We want to have a good name in the market and even when people want to buy our houses, they know our name already and trust us. The houses have good prices and good quality. We don’t charge for some of the square metres - we give them for free such as the veranda (hiên, hè),” she said.

“Kevin Guy is the face of the team … and as long as he stays here, he will be the face of the team,” Presson said before he left. “He has built himself a good game and a good brand and people associate that with the Rattlers as well, who also have a good name and a good brand. He’s our focal point and we try not to focus on players and we try to focus on him.”

"Have it easy" nghĩa là gì?

Thư giãn nào Photo by Pixabay on Pexels

'Have it easy' = có gì dễ dàng -> có hay đang ở vị trí đặc biệt thoải mái, dễ dàng, thuận lợi (không gặp khó khăn gì).

Ví dụ
Four Indians feature in the men's singles draw (tỉ số hòa). Former world No.1 Srikanth may have it easy till the quarterfinals where he may face second seed Tien Chen Chou of Chinese Taipei. Srikanth, however, made light of the easy draw.

“We’re a good team, we know we’re a good team. You don’t come to Everton and expect to have it easy and win very easily or comfortably, they’re a quality team. “The fact we put them under the cosh for most of the second half and a bit of the first half shows that we’re a good team.”

Now I have two children of my own and I devote as much time as I can to the fight for climate justice. I know that, in comparison with you and your friends, we have it easy over here – that activists in India are beaten by police, imprisoned without charge, murdered by government goondas – hired thugs.

"Have it large" nghĩa là gì?

Charlotte's team start the night confidently, declaring they're going to 'have it large' and win the challenge - but by the end of the night she's crying in the toilet.

Laurie, however, has not yet confirmed her new marital status (tình trạng hôn nhân) on social media herself - but her most recent tweet seemed to hint she had a big few days planned. She tweeted on Thursday last week: "Roll on the weekend... have it large."

Trevor says: “It’s great to be back together with my Saturday night crew, we had such a fun time in Bridlington last year and we are going to have it large in Blackpool this year. I’m so excited to have The Brand New Heavies with me, one of my favourite UK bands and Beverley Knight, she just keeps getting better every year – I just want to work with her all the time!”

"Have my druthers" nghĩa là gì?

Hay đi mỗi bên một màu nhỉ? Photo by Alexandra Maria on Pexels

'Have one's druthers' có từ 'druthers' = would rather: thể hiện mong muốn, sở thích của mình -> từ này thường đi kèm với từ "if" ở đầu câu để diễn tả sự lựa chọn, mong muốn yêu thích cái gì

Ví dụ
But if I would have my druthers, I would rather have an economy that can be strong with the low inflation (lạm phát) that we have, and today's China burst shows exactly what I mean.

Still, if I have my druthers, I still prefer being at the controls of an old model. In the mid-1980s, the 911 models were still small and so lightweight that they delivered truly remarkable performance. Most impressive (ấn tượng) was the way the car seemed to commune with the road.

Having a quiet car option is also very good, because I’m often on conference calls, or I’m trying to dictate (ra lệnh) something or trying to write something and I don’t want noise or loud music playing. Also, the idea of having silence is so refreshing! The temperature control is great too, because usually, if I have my druthers, I always sit in the front seat so I can control the heat and the air conditioning.

"Get your ears lowered" nghĩa là gì?

Không hiểu là cắt tóc hay tạo dáng là chính nữa Photo by Valeria Boltneva from Pexels

'Get one's ears lowered' = làm tai của ai thấp hơn -> cắt tóc, đặc biệt cắt ngắn tới mức để lộ tai (chắc là tóc tém nhỉ mấy bạn?!)

Ví dụ
Acadiana Barber Company upholds (duy trì, gìn giữ) a family friendly environment which families can enjoy while even their little ones get their ears lowered.

“Just the chair and the hair happens to be one of the things that bind us,” said Paul Harvey, who has been getting his hair cut by Deal for over a decade. “He engenders (sinh ra, tạo ra) loyalty. There are a lot of places you can go to get your ears lowered but for some reason, I keep coming back here.”

“We are more than a place to just come get your ears lowered; we are an experience to be remembered,” said Carrie Tegart. “We want to be your barber for life! The Barber Shop of Aiken is where you can bring your son for his first lock of curls to be cut and where a gentleman can come relax in the same setting after a long round of golf.”

"God's green earth" nghĩa là gì?

Đi thám hiểm thế giới mới thôi nào Photo by Pixabay on Pexels

'God's green earth' = trái đất xanh của Chúa -> toàn bộ hành tinh, Trái Đất; bất cứ đâu và mọi chốn.

Ví dụ
It was conservative (bảo thủ) radio star Dana Loesch, nobody’s idea of a liberal or weak-kneed “RINO,” who after years of working closely with Bannon labeled (dán nhãn, mác) him “one of the worst people on God's green earth.”

Volkswagen's barnstorming (thú vị, hào hứng) electric race car already holds records for Pikes Peak, Goodwood and the Nurburgring, and now it's headed to China, where it will tear up the famous 99 turns up Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road, one of the most spectacular (đẹp mắt, ngoạn mục) roads on God's green Earth.

It sometimes seems like the world is not quite designed for children. Even the pavements of Hackney, one of the more child-friendly parts of God’s green earth, are beset (bao quanh) by pram-height (chiều cao của xe đẩy) pratfalls. I speak not merely of the snarling (cằn nhằn) traffic and caustic (chất ăn mòn) fumes, but the scaffolds (giá đỡ) jutting out at satanic (xấu xa) angles, as if designed by devious opticians hoping to drum up business by scarring the eyes of passing infants.

"Pace of Play" nghĩa là gì?

"Pace of Play" = tốc độ chơi.

“Pace of play has been an issue for golf at all levels for a long time,” his post continued.

Amid a season-long controversy (tranh cãi) that escalated (leo thang) this week when two videos showed Bryson DeChambeau taking two-plus minutes to hit shots, the PGA Tour said it would explore changes to its pace of play policy.

Without anything like a shot clock being used and the current rules on the books about pace of play on the PGA Tour rarely being enforced (làm, thi hành), slow play has been a major issue on this season that has come to light more recently with elite (ưu tú) players like Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka complaining about it.

"Handbags at ten paces" nghĩa là gì?

It's handbags at ten paces as long-time nutcases (gã điên lâu năm) Andrew Fifita and Josh Dugan take aim at the least respected journalist in the business, Phil Rothfield.

There were a number of French speaking players on both sides on display. Indeed, it was a glorious spectacle (cảnh tượng tuyệt vời), even the handbags at ten paces.

115-entrants (người tham gia) had perished (bỏ mạng) like flies in a microwave oven; only we didn’t get the zenith (đỉnh cao) the fans of the live stream wanted. The heads-up (đối đầu) fight between Greenwood and Loeliger was more of handbags at ten paces, when in the first hand, the pair got it in with garbage versus garbage, and Loeliger’s trash won.

"Change of pace" nghĩa là gì?

"Change of pace" = thay đổi nhịp độ -> thay đổi điều quen thuộc/thói quen/ lối sống sinh hoạt hàng ngày.

Ví dụ
Are there moments when you feel the need for a change of pace?

You then come to the realization that you're longing for a change of pace and change of lifestyle - you want to move out of the city.

I long for some action, some change of pace and, yes, some drama. Everything in my experience tells me that this will make for better learning.

An experimental and eclectic (thử nghiệm và chọn lọc) musical endeavor (nỗ lực) that finds Anselmo exploring a softer, graver vocal style, EN MINOR is an honest and deliberate (thận trọng) change of pace delivering brooding tales of pain, regret, and sorrow.

"Pick up the pace" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Austin Distel on Unsplash

"Pick up the pace" = theo kịp/ tăng tốc/ tăng năng xuất.

Ví dụ
At 50 employees and growing, Pointman is picking up the pace.

The Tall Blacks got off to a great start, draining (rút cạn) 29 first quarter points before picking up the pace even more to close out the half 61-42.

For Hamilton it was a similar situation, but complicated more by the fact that he came out into a load of backmarkers (trượt thứ hạng đua), just as he was wanting to pick up the pace.

I’ve experienced this a lot through the years. On quiet days my crew stocked (tích trữ) accordingly — and to their credit, when we were slammed (bị đập) with a busy period they picked up the pace.

"Pace back and forth" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Alex Ronsdorf on Unsplash

"Pace back and forth" hoặc "pace up and down" có nghĩa đi đi lại lại, bồn chồn, luẩn quẩn tại một chỗ vì sợ hoặc lo lắng/ căng thẳng.

Ví dụ
“The victim (nạn nhân) stated that (Blake) had a drug problem and was on something (gặp vấn đề). The victim stopped talking and started to pace back and forth,” the complaint states (lời khiếu nại).

Take lots of pictures, help them get their stuff in the classroom. But once that is complete, you have to let them go. Don't pace back and forth outside the door or watch through the window.

Carmen Iris Santiago’s estranged (bị ghẻ lạnh) husband had begun showing up (xuất hiện) recently outside the beauty salon in Queens where she worked. He would usually pace back and forth in front of the store, unnerving (quấy nhiễu) employees and customers.

"Set the pace" nghĩa là gì?

"Set the pace" có nghĩa là đặt ra tiêu chuẩn/ quy định và khiến người khác làm theo. Cụm từ xuất phát từ cuộc đua ngựa, khi một con ngựa chạy vượt qua tất cả các con khác, nó sẽ trở thành người dẫn đầu.

Ví dụ
Holding back tears, Bettie Chaplin says, “she’s a woman who set the pace for other women and these pictures, bring it home.”

Berlin set the pace in Europe in terms of growth in residential rents (giá thuê nhà ở) during the first half of 2019, posting an increase of 3.9% compared with the year-earlier period (giai đoạn đầu năm), research from Savills shows.

Who sets the pace in your department? When it comes to how produce operations perform, the productivity (năng suất), important aspects such as stock conditions (tình trạng nguyên vật liệu), labor management (quản lý lao động), even crew morale (tinh thần đội nhóm) can all be traced to what kind of pace is set.

"Do at your own pace" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Alexander Dummer on Unsplash

"Do (something) at (one's) own pace" = làm việc tùy theo sức/ tốc độ của mình.

Ví dụ
We feel like we can do anything now, record (thu âm) what we want when we want, at our own pace and with our creativity at the forefront (hàng đầu).

Most online courses are asynchronous (không đồng bộ), meaning they can be completed at your own pace within the calendar due dates (đúng ngày, hạn ngày) set by each professor.

When we are trying to introduce a new topic, I start with a little revision (chỉnh sửa) of things he knows already and then follow it with new skills. This has helped him get used to doing new things at his own pace.

What does living life at your own pace mean? Means you doing you, living on your terms. It’s a life that will not make sense (vô nghĩa) to anyone else but you. Regardless of any criticism (chỉ trích), you do it your way. But the condition is, you are happy doing it.
