"Moon around" nghĩa là gì?

Làm gì để giết thời gian đây? Photo by  Wil Stewart

"Moon around" nghĩa là đi lang thang, vơ vẩn; có vẻ mặt thẫn thờ như ở cung trăng.

Ví dụ
You can drink your Lambrusco inside Sauvage, or mooning around the courtyards (sân nhỏ, sân trong) of The Churchill.

One day upon waking I could reach for a book to read, while another morning I may be mooning around, reflecting and dreaming.

In this landscape, mooning around over a guy who isn't worth an hour of your thoughts, let alone three sleepless nights, is simply not OK.

You can't even take a good one minute long exposure (sự lộ sáng, sự phơi bày, phơi mình ra) with the moon around because it will literally have moved enough to destroy the shot.

"Many moons ago" nghĩa là gì?

Sao nhiều trăng trên trời vậy? Photo by Ganapathy Kumar

"Many moons ago" = (đã) qua nhiều con trăng, qua nhiều mùa trăng -> nghĩa là từ rất lâu trong quá khứ/trong một thời gian dài trước đây.

Ví dụ
Many moons ago, I became hooked (mắc vào) on Zodiac chronographs (máy ghi thời gian), after acquiring my first "good watch." At what must've been eleven or twelve years old, I was beyond elated, upon receiving an orange dial, two-register quartz chronograph as a gift, which I helped pick out from the watch display of a department store down south.

“‘Tin Pan Alley’ came to me many moons ago. In a foreign flat, the thoughts of my daily reprieves (hủy bỏ, hoãn) flooding my head. Namely, walking the streets of London in the pissings of rain, absorbed (say mê) by the narrow cobbled (sỏi) streets whose only purpose it seemed to me was to lead a man to another point of bewildered fascination (sự mê hoặc làm ngơ ngác, hoang mang).

Many moons ago, in the shadowy (đầy bóng tối) darkness of the 1990s, a young Lewin visited his elder cousin. An adept AMOS programmer, he had managed to get his Amiga 500 to control an RC car, with little more than a large pile of relays and guile (xảo trá, lừa đảo). Everything worked well, but there was just one problem — once the car left the room, there was no way to see what was going on.

"Man in the moon" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Brittani Burns

"Man in the moon" = Chú cuội/người hay mơ mộng viễn vông -> Chỉ sự tưởng tượng/cảm thấy có hình ảnh giống người trong mặt trăng/chỉ sự hão huyền và không thực tế.

Ví dụ
Being written in the persona of a woman in the moon – one who is incredulous (hoài nghi) anyone could have believed instead in a man in the moon.

Abundant (dồi dào) in the mare (vùng tối phẳng rộng trên mặt trăng) basalts (đất bazan) (the dark spots of the “man in the moon”), strong and light titanium forms up to 8 percent of moon dirt.

The play mixes scientific facts, every day logistical struggles and lyricism (trữ tình). CFC syndrome is so horrific that lyricism and metaphor (phép ẩn dụ) is necessary to help process the brutal (tàn bạo) reality of it all. Although there can never truly be understanding, the title refers to Ian looking for his son in the moon. Sometimes, when looking closely at the moon, you can see a face. This is where the expression of the man in the moon comes from. Ian just wants to find Walker, his son, whose condition makes him unknowable, unreachable, anywhere-even in the moon.

"Cry for the moon" nghĩa là gì?

Quay trở lại trái đất đi nào. Photo by Alex Rosario

"Cry/ask for the moon" = đòi (bằng được) mặt trăng -> nghĩa là đưa ra những yêu cầu không thực tế/vô lý và không thể nào xảy ra được.

Ví dụ
You are seditious (nổi loạn), you are a prairie (đồng cỏ, thảo nguyên) on fire, you are a barrel of gunpowder (thuốc súng), you cry for the moon, you are not fit for a fur coat; what have you to do with Home Rule?’

"AMS--they have asked for 14 days thinking that if they ask for stars, they will get the Moon. If they ask for the Moon, they will get the Earth. They have already taken five days of questioning, now they want 14 days," Singhvi argued before court.

Most of us will recall MG for a different sort of car than this. Morris Garages’ sports cars were legendary (huyền thoại), but of the past. And while it’s easy to criticise the company’s Chinese owners for squandering (phung phí) history in favour of a range of undistinguished (tầm thường, kém) family hatchbacks and SUVs (a smaller SUV is on the way next year), that’s a little unfair. As Thorney notes, while enthusiasts would “cry for the moon... the first need for survival is a saleable (có thể bán được) product”.

"Blood moon" nghĩa là gì?

Bạn đã từng thấy nguyệt thực chưa? Photo by Federico Beccari

"Blood moon" = Mặt trăng nhuốm máu -> Dấu hiệu về ngày tận thế trong Kinh Thánh/điềm báo.

Ví dụ
This is a partial lunar eclipse, a “half-blood” moon, and it's a truly strange-looking spectacle coming soon to a night sky near you.

North and South America will get the best view of the super "blood moon," as it's known, but Europeans and Africans will also be able to watch (weather permitting). So, let's break down the hype, starting with the eclipse (nguyệt thực).

Skywatchers wowed (kinh ngạc) by the spectacular "blood moon" eclipse Sunday (Jan. 20) are probably asking, "When do we get an encore (diễn ra lại)?" While the moon won't turn red again for several years, there will be several partial lunar eclipses in 2019 and 2020. Some parts of the planet may also experience solar eclipses (nhật thực) or a "transit" (sự vận động của một vật thể trong vũ trụ, sự đi qua) of the sun by the planet Mercury (hành tinh thủy), which is also technically an eclipse.

"Shoot the moon" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Sam McJunkin

"Shoot the moon" = ngắm bắn/nhắm bắn mặt trăng -> Bỏ đi mà không thanh toán hóa đơn/trắng túi trong một cuộc đánh bài/liều cược tất cả để có phần thưởng cuối cùng.

Ví dụ
Shoot the Moon. In the late 1950s, the space race (một cuộc đua trên không gian) was just beginning, and the Soviet Union had a good head start with the launch of Sputnik.

As a kid, the expression Shoot the Moon was a rarely used phrase in a card game that my family played. In the game of Rook, if one did Shoot the Moon, that meant they had a hand where they thought they could take every trick. And if they did, they would score 500 points, a rare feat (chiến công, kỳ công). Shoot the Moon means doing the near impossible.

In a season that has occasionally been classified as a disappointment (nỗi thất vọng) because of the enormity of his contract and the shoot-the-moon expectations attached to it, he has clinched the second 30-homer/100-RBI season of his career with a chance for more. So, yes, Harper has mostly done his share.

"Moon is made of green cheese" nghĩa là gì?

Bầu trời cần xanh còn em thì cần anh. Photo by Cristofer Jeschke

"Moon is made of green cheese" = Mặt trăng được tạo ra từ phó mát xanh lá cây -> Chỉ những điều được tưởng tượng/điều phi lý và điều được nói quá lên.

Ví dụ
I'll believe there was a real formal proposal being drawn up when the thing leaked (lộ ra ngoài, được tiết lộ), the same time I believe the Moon is made of green cheese.

How come Uccellini or other dissenters (người biệt giáo) haven’t resigned? Is it because they fear they’d be replaced with garbage political cronies (bạn chí thân) who *will* put out the “moon is made of green cheese” statement if commanded to do so?

“Boss, we just learned that Jenkins has all kinds of strange beliefs and views. He believes that the moon is made of green cheese, that God is a giant squid (mồi nhân tạo, mực ống) who lives at the bottom of the oceans, that the monarchy (nền quân chủ) should be restored and that Bigfoot is the Queen of England in disguise (sự che giấu, cải trang), and that anyone with the letter ‘f’ in their name is likely to become a zombie after death.”

"Go between the moon and the milkman" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Hybrid

"Go between the moon and the milkman" = Đi giữa mặt trăng với người bán sữa -> Chạy trốn trong đêm/xuyên đêm để tránh sự theo đuổi/vay bắt (thường là sự truy đuổi của các chủ nợ).

Ví dụ
A homeless man accused of fraudulently (gian lận) claiming more than £85,000 meant for victims of the Grenfell Tower fire told authorities he helped residents go between the moon and the milkman of the tragedy (tai họa, bi kịch), a court has heard.

Five years after ISIS forces stormed Christian villages in Northern Iraq, forcing thousands to go between the moon and the milkman, the militants (chiến sĩ) have been suppressed (bị chặn), but the situation of Christians remains precarious (mong manh, bấp bênh) and, according to one local, their future in Iraq is still at risk (vẫn nguy hiểm).

A volcano (núi lửa) has erupted (phun lửa, nổ ra) on the Italian island of Stromboli, killing one person and leaving several others injured (bị thương) Tourists were forced to go between the moon and the milkman as thick plumes of smoke (những vòm khói dày) billowed into the air (dâng lên cuồn cuộn trên không). The navy (hải quân) has been deployed (triển khai) for a possible mass evacuation (sự rút khỏi, sự sơ tán).

"Purr like a cat" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Nicole De Khors from Burst

"Purr like a cat" là cụm từ để miêu tả tiếng nổ/kêu của các động cơ chạy trơn tru, mượt mà hoặc tiếng reo hò/hú của con người khi họ đang vui sướng, phấn khích.

Ví dụ
Luke Bryan is the only performer to purr like a cat on the RodeoHouston stage — and make it work.

The only moments of light relief (nhẹ nhõm) were provided, as ever, by Horace the pug, who has started to purr like a cat for some unknown reason. If I were Horace the pug, I, too, would purr in Caroline’s welcoming embrace (cái ôm).

Lately, the hot trend in the field of Jeff Goldblum interviewing has been to ask him to do all sorts of odd (kỳ quặc) things and then marvel (ngạc nhiên) as he gamely does them. We’ve seen him read horny tweets about himself. We’ve seen him purr like a cat. We’ve even seen him, for whatever reason, play Seymour Skinner in a table-reading of “Steamed Hams.”

Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ nhấn chìm thành phố 12.000 năm tuổi để làm đập thủy điện...

The ancient settlement (khu định cư cổ xưa) of Hasankeyf will soon be submerged (dìm, nhận chìm) as part of a controversial (gây tranh cãi) dam (đập thủy điện) project – despite residents’ protests (biểu tình phản đối)

After the half-hour drive from Batman in south-east Turkey, the ancient city of Hasankeyf, which sits on the banks of the Tigris River, appears as an oasis.

Hasankeyf is thought to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on Earth, dating as far back as 12,000 years and containing thousands of caves (hang động), churches (nhà thờ) and tombs (lăng mộ).

But this jewel (viên kim cương) of human history (lịch sử loài người) will soon be lost; most of the settlement is about to be flooded as part of the highly controversial Ilisu dam project.

"A snake in your bosom" nghĩa là gì?

Huhu, mẹ ơi, con bị cô ấy phản bội! Photo by Jordan Whitt on Unsplash

"A snake in one's bosom" (con rắn trong ngực ai đó) là thành ngữ dùng để miêu tả những người được (ai đó) xem là bạn, được quan tâm và chăm sóc nhưng hoá ra lại là một kẻ dối trá, vô ơn.

Ví dụ
“Japan has a snake in her bosom. That snake is namely flatterers (những kẻ tâng bốc/ xu nịnh). What led Japan to defeat is neither army nor government, but the snake in Japan’s bosom, the flatterers.”

Unlike some commentators who would want to believe that Opposition unity has been severely (dữ dội) jolted (làm choáng váng/ ngạc nhiên), we are of the view that Nitish Kumar’s departure is good riddance (sự giải thoát). Moreover, you cannot cement (thắt chặt/ làm gắn kết) a greater association with a snake in your bosom. The road ahead is clear to us, even if it is a long and tortuous (quanh co) one.

You know very well, O Sancho Panza, my neighbor and friend, how the proclamation (sự công bố) and edict (sắc lệnh) that His Majesty (đức vua/hoàng hậu) issues against those of my race brought terror (sự kinh hoàng) and fear to all of us…It seems to me it was divine (thần thánh/ thiêng liêng) inspiration (sự truyền cảm/cảm hứng) that moved His Majesty to put into effect so noble a resolution, not because all of us were guilty (có tội), for some were firm and true Christians, though these were so few they could not oppose those who were not, but because it is not a good idea to nurture a snake in your bosom or shelter (nơi ẩn náu/trú ẩn) enemies in your house.

"Hit the panic button" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Rene Asmussen on Pexels

"Hit the panic button" = ấn nút hoảng loạn -> nghĩa là phản ứng thái quá tới tình huống tiêu cực, sợ hãi quá mức, báo động hoặc rối loạn.

Ví dụ
Despite a 31-17 season-opening win over the Bucs in Tampa, 49ers fans already have hit the panic button. After feeling like quarterback (tiền vệ) Jimmy Garoppolo was the franchise savior (người cứu rỗi), the Faithful have soured on the signal-caller.

The Browns’ first game under Freddie Kitchens was a mess (mớ hỗn độn), but don’t hit the panic button just yet. Losing to the Titans by 30 wasn’t exactly the start that Cleveland was looking for after an offseason (nghỉ giữa mùa) filled with hype, but the game wasn’t nearly as ugly as the 43-13 final score might suggest.

Within the past month, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s yet-to-launch mobile video service Quibi has lost two of its top execs — head of advertising and partnerships Tim Connolly and Janice Min, who had been in charge (đứng đầu) of the company’s daily programming deals with media companies — but ad buyers aren’t ready to hit the panic button.

"Wrap around my little finger" nghĩa là gì?

Mình nắm ổng trong lòng bàn tay! Photo courtesy: Gonthorn Nilodom

"Wrap around one's (little) finger" = quấn quanh ngón tay -> có thể sai khiến hay chỉ huy ai đó làm theo ý muốn mình một cách dễ dàng.

Ví dụ
He has all of them wrapped around his little finger. They'd do anything for him.

"But here is perhaps the most interesting and telling part: when this girl corrected her posture (tư thế), I felt a distinct pang of intimidation (sự hăm dọa). It surprised and dismayed (mất tinh thần) me, because I was sure until that moment that I had this girl wrapped around my finger. Suddenly the roles were decidedly reversed (đảo ngược)."

"A few times I've gotten involved with much older men. When I was seventeen I was involved with a 28-year-old. It was legal where I was. I was into him because he had a car and was a total dork (ngớ ngẩn) so I had him wrapped around my finger. Last year, I was 24 and hooked up (ngủ) with a 44-year-old a few times. He just happened to be my type. Very tall and with a lot of tattoos and punk band shirts. I also just enjoy the illicit (trái phép) thrill of doing something a bit taboo (cấm kỵ)."

"Push your buttons" nghĩa là gì?

Chán các bạn quá!! Photo by: Nathan Cowley on Pexels

"Push someone's buttons" = bấm nút của ai -> nghĩa là làm những việc tạo ra phản ứng cảm xúc mạnh mẽ, đặc biệt là tức giận, cáu kỉnh hoặc điên tiết.

Ví dụ
We found some thought-provoking options on the website "Motherly" that you might want to try. Instead of asking how their day was, how about what was the funniest thing that happened today? Did anyone push your buttons today? What rule (luật lệ) was the hardest to follow today? Who made you smile today?

If being online is difficult, set your privacy settings to see only posts or tweets from people you follow. Avoid negative (tiêu cực) people. Create an online community filled with truth-tellers and inspiration. Stop trying to change people or engage (gây chiến) with people who push your buttons. As Maya Angelou said, “When people show you who they are, believe them.”

Some people like to push your buttons. Don’t let them. Absorb (tiếp nhận) what the other person is saying or doing, but don’t allow him or her to trigger a reaction. Self-control takes practice and it will serve you much better than a knee-jerk response.

-----
Menu pricing starts with a simple rule, says John Buchanan of the consulting arm of Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, a restaurant group: take the cost of ingredients and multiply by three. Then ask yourself how much customers would expect to pay for a dish of this type, and how much they would expect to pay for it from you. A Pret lobster roll and one from a fancy seafood restaurant are quite different propositions. Lastly, check what the competition charges. “Only a small part of this decision is what I would call scientific,” says Mr Buchanan. “A lot has to do with a subjective judgment of what the market will bear.”

The lunch market is local. New Yorkers do not care about prices in London. And they—alongside Bostonians and Washingtonians—are used to their local high prices, for reasons that include bigger portions (though not at Pret) and tipping habits. Londoners are keener on sandwich lunches, which means stiffer competition in that part of the market...

"Faraway look" nghĩa là gì?

Nhìn vào hư không, bước vô định vào xa xăm.... Photo by: Freddy Marschall on Unsplash

"Faraway look" = cái nhìn xa xăm -> nghĩa là nét mặt hoặc ánh mắt cho thấy một người đang bận tâm hoặc trầm ngâm suy nghĩ về điều gì và không chú ý tới mọi thứ xung quanh.

Ví dụ
He doesn’t wake up puking his guts out every morning anymore. He doesn’t have to wear sunglasses all the time, even indoors (trong nhà), like he used to. The life-threatening seizures (chiếm lấy) that would frequently hospitalize him haven’t happened for two years now. His eyes, which once had a glazed (thẫn thờ), faraway look to them, seem clear and focused.

In 2012, Saurabh Gupta was caught up in the corporate rat race (cuộc đua/cạnh tranh vs đồng nghiệp tại công ty) of Mumbai, the beating heart of India’s finance and commerce sector. He was working hard, drinking harder and living for the weekend. A photo of him – pitcher in hand and a faraway look in his eyes – punched up on the screen behind him as he delivers a TEDx talk in Paris, attests (chứng minh) to this.

We are back for “Travers Week” at Saratoga, the beautiful “Spa” in upstate New York. Traditionally, the huge week of activities — highlighted by the running of the G1 Stakes — is the culmination (cực điểm) of the meet and signals that Fall is not a faraway look into the future. But before we turn the pages on another Saratoga Summer, let’s turn a few pages on the Brisnet.com past performances for today and the rest of this great week. And, let’s try our darnedest to find a few winners along the way.
