"Move mountains" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Suliman Sallehi on Pexels

"Move mountains" = di chuyển núi đồi -> nghĩa là làm những việc rất khó khăn, phi thường.

Ví dụ
A desire (khát vọng) to move mountains is driving Joni Cobb to move on from Pipeline — her family of 13 years. “I’ve been thinking about it for many years … not because I don’t love what I do. I love what I do [with Pipeline],” said Cobb, president and CEO of the Midwest-based accelerator and entrepreneur (chủ thầu) network.

I’m here to tell you to keep going, keeping pushing on for your child. You truly know your child best and you always will. Remember your love can move mountains and it’s easy for people to judge (phán xét) who haven’t walked in your shoes (đặt mình vào tình huống/trường hợp của ai đó).

We all have the choice to best use our thoughts in ways that contribute (cống hiến) to society. Our words and actions can make an essential change to big problems. For a change to happen, we, as individuals (cá nhân), need to make the change at our end. We need to commit to peace. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.” When we operate under the rule of peace, yes, we can move mountains.

"Man is a wolf to man" nghĩa là gì?

"Man is a wolf to man" = Đàn ông làm mồi/chó sói với nhau -> con trai với nhau hay gắt gỏng/ghen ghét/hại nhau.

Ví dụ
The well-advertised possibilities of human cruelty (sự hung ác) would make you think that homo homini lupus is the size of it: man is a wolf to man.

Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) deduced from the political anarchy (tình trạng vô chính phủ) of his time that “man is a wolf to man” (L'homme est un loup pour l'homme).

"Man is a wolf to man," say so many moody antiheroes (nam chính phản diện) in gritty (bạo dạn, có sạn) dramas. Humans cheat and hurt each other constantly, and economists and cynics say we're selfish (ích kỷ) by nature. So it's no surprise that the rich exploit (bóc lột) the poor, or that corporations destroy the environment. Right?

Khởi nghiệp ngành khách sạn: Startup nên trưởng thành từ vị trí thấp nhất?

vớ vỉn, mua lại luôn 1 khách sạn và đẻ ba con trai nhé :D
-----
Conrad Nicholson Hilton khởi nghiệp bằng việc mua lại khách sạn đầu tiên ở Cisco, Texas năm 1919 khi ngành dầu mỏ bùng nổ ở đây,

con trai cả Conrad Jr., cưới Elizabeth Taylor năm 1950,

con trai thứ William Barron Hilton (sinh 23/10/1927, mất 19/9/2019, thọ 91 tuổi, tổng tài sản 2,5 tỷ usd theo forbes, ông nội của Paris Hilton, là phóng viên hải quân thời trận trân châu cảng) là người nối nghiệp xuất sắc của cha, pursued new ventures (khởi nghiệp, mạo hiểm kinh doanh), turning the family enterprise, based in Beverly Hills, Calif., into a business that included thousands of hotel rooms, casino-hotels, time-share apartments (căn hộ thuê chung theo thời gian) and an early credit-card company, Carte Blanche. He engineered Hilton’s entrance into the Las Vegas casino market in 1970. He purchased Kirk Kerkorian’s International, the world’s largest resort hotel, renaming it the Las Vegas Hilton, and bought Mr. Kerkorian’s Flamingo as well, renaming it the Flamingo Hilton. The company’s casino-hotels later extended to Atlantic City and other locations.

At varying times the Hilton empire also included the Waldorf Astoria and the Plaza in New York, as well as the Sir Francis Drake in San Francisco, the Mayflower in Washington and the Conrad Hilton and Palmer House in Chicago.

The Hilton company split off its United States and international hotels into separate entities in the 1960s, but reunited its properties in 2006 with the acquisition of more than 400 overseas hotels, creating an empire of 2,800 hotels. Barron Hilton was co-chairman of Hilton Hotels together with the financier Stephen Bollenbach when it was sold for some $26 billion to the private equity group Blackstone in 2007.

"Greater love hath no man" nghĩa là gì?

"Greater love hath no man" = John 15:13 New International Version (NIV). 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends.

If by the grace (ân điển) of God we are given stewardship (cương vị quản gia, quản lý) over someone else—I hope this story serves as a reminder—don’t forget them. Greater love hath no man than this; that he lay down his life for his friends.

Price said Hinkle’s family had told him to preach (bài thuyết giáo, chia sẻ lời Chúa) the truth at the service. And he did preach, first quoting John 15:13: “ ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.’

Trump is not alone in telling this story of sacrifice (sự hy sinh). His whole family, his eldest son has explained, "put on all these impositions (sự đánh thuế, gánh vác) on ourselves and essentially got no credit for actually doing that ... for doing the right thing." Fox News host Brian Kilmeade agrees. A public insult (lăng mạ) suffered by the president's other adult son, Eric Trump, is just "part of the sacrifice of the Trump family," he said in June. Greater love hath no man than this, I guess, that he get spit on in a restaurant because his dad's saving America.

"Good men are scarce" nghĩa là gì?

Tình tay tư. Photo by Sammie Vasquez

"Good men are scarce" = Đàn ông tốt thì hiếm có khó tìm -> Khó để tìm người đàn ông tốt để yêu và gắn bó.

Ví dụ
They say good men are scarce; a phrase many ladies will agree with no doubt, but one which the menfolk (đàn ông, đấng mày râu) will want to denounce (tố giác, vạch mặt) tenfold (gấp mười)!

Men say good men are scarce, and that there are more dateable (đáng để hẹn hò, có thể hẹn hò) women than dateable men, justifying their argument that they have to double up to ensure that all women are properly served in the love department.

So, not only are men well advanced in the skill of shooting their shot with years of practice, men that shoot their shot even when they are perhaps not the best catch in a number of ways are often still given a fair shot by women. Why? Well, aside the reasons I set out above, women have been told to look for ‘potential’, because (good) men are ‘scarce’.

"Give a man enough rope and he will hang himself" nghĩa là gì?

"Give a man enough rope and he will hang himself" = Cho ai dây thừng đủ dài để họ tự treo cổ mà chết -> Cố tình để ai đó tự do mắc những sai lầm/làm điều sai lạc để rồi họ thất bại/lâm vào nghịch cảnh.

Ví dụ
"They sometimes say if you give a fool a piece of rope he'll hang himself, and it seems that in this case this person has done exactly that," says Jenvey

Take away all of his social media accounts this second or this will NEVER work. The guy just cannot shut up with his online antics (trò cười). Give him enough rope and he will eventually hang himself again. Still cannot believe everything that has happened with this guy this Summer. I genuinely (thành thật) feel bad for the Raiders. UGH!!!!

Now, in mind-bending (gây ra ảo giác, ảnh hưởng mạnh tới đầu óc), intergalactic (ở giữa những thiên hà), whiplash (dây buộc đầu roi) fashion, he says for the first time, I did, I did, I charged violations (sự vi phạm) of FECA and FARA. Reminiscent of the old adage, “Give a man enough rope and he will hang himself,” the Special Counsel just did so.

"Have a brush with" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Christopher Campbell on Unsplash.

'Have a brush with something' có từ brush là bút lông, bút vẽ, bạn có thể hình dung nét bút phất, lướt nhẹ trên giấy, từ này nghĩa khác là cuộc chạm trán chớp nhoáng (với quân thù) -> cụm từ này nghĩa là gần chạm tới, trải qua (ngắn ngủi) (tình yêu, cái chết, phá sản v.v...).

Ví dụ
The story on the other side of the Red Bull garage wasn't as straightforward, with rookie Alex Albon suffering a brush with the wall in FP2 after exceeding his limits while pushing, a mishap (việc rủi ro, việc không may; tai nạn; sự bất hạnh) which slightly eroded (xói mòn) his confidence (sự tự tin).

His father had a brush with show business when Zsa Zsa Gabor became his second wife in 1942. Barron’s older brother, Conrad Jr., known as Nicky, married a teenage Elizabeth Taylor in 1950. Barron’s socialite granddaughter Paris Hilton transformed herself into a pop culture brand.

Although Andy died on the heels of a fairly common surgery (phẫu thuật), he had a brush with death earlier in life that was actually downright terrifying. On June 3, 1968, Valerie Solanas shot Andy, along with art critic Mario Amaya, at Andy's studio. Valerie had worked on the outskirts (ngoại ô) of Andy's group as an actress and writer, but her work had become radically feminist to the point of being anti-men, even writing a work called the SCUM Manifesto that suggested a utopian society (xã hội không tưởng) by eliminating (xóa bỏ) patriarchal (phụ hệ, gia trưởng) societal structures (cơ cấu xã hội) and men themselves.

-----

...To the extent that Trump and his business did negotiate successful deals, Lapidus said, it was largely because of the skill of his senior executives such as Harvey Freeman and Susan Heilbron, who handled most of the Trump Organization’s Atlantic City and leasing negotiations (hợp đồng thuê tài sản). “They did all the detailed analysis (phân tích kỹ lưỡng) and reading, none of which he would ever do.” Other former Trump business associates say that his frequent (thường xuyên) boasts (khoe khoang, tâng bốc) about beating (đánh bại) the banks (ngân hàng) at the negotiating table (bàn đàm phán) are also overstated (được thổi phồng); it is widely agreed that the negotiating skill of Trump’s then-chief financial officer (giám đốc tài chính), Stephen Bollenbach, is mainly what saved him from a close brush with (tiếp xúc ngắn, gần chạm tới) personal bankruptcy (phá sản cá nhân) when he was $900 million in debt (nợ nần) in 1990.

...When negotiating with countries rather than companies, however, the situation is different. There are only so many countries in the world, and a president must deal with the major ones again and again, and on many different levels—goodwill counts, in other words. Moreover, countries cannot be driven out of business like competitors in business; they don’t file for bankruptcy and conveniently disappear. There is no zero-sum “Only I win” outcome in trade. Above all, national pride (tự hào dân tộc) comes into play—a successful negotiation must leave the other side a face-saving way out. World leaders can’t just surrender (đầu hàng) and slink off (âm thầm cuốn xéo) like someone who’s been beaten on a business deal.

"Fuller Brush man" nghĩa là gì?

"Fuller Brush man" = nhân viên công ty fuller brush (công ty thành lập năm 1906 bởi Alfred Fuller, bán đồ vệ sinh cá nhân, áp dụng kỹ thuật door-to-door sale) -> người đàn ông bán hàng đi từng nhà.

Ví dụ
Although the 74-year-old Mount Vernon resident isn’t intimidating (đáng kinh hãi) – or extinct (tuyệt chủng) – he is a rare species (loài hiếm). Timms is a Fuller Brush Man.

Decades ago a Fuller Brush man was a well-known face in neighborhoods. The company started selling cleaning supplies more than 100 years ago. However, the profession (nghề nghiệp) of door-to-door selling has changed. It's gone from thousands of salesmen across the country to Fuller is one of the few companies left.

It's a lonely walk down the path and up the stairs, but Al Cohen is used to it. He rings the doorbell. A man in plaid (kẻ sọc ô vuông) shorts and Crocs opens the door, tentatively (ngập ngừng, thăm dò). "Fuller Brush Man!" Cohen announces. The man looks bemused (sửng sốt, kinh ngạc). Or is it amused? "The last Fuller Brush man?" he asks.

"Every man to his taste" = Tùy vào sở thích riêng mỗi người -> Mỗi người đều có sở thích khác nhau và chúng ta nên chấp nhận.

Ví dụ
"I don’t discuss other people’s manners. This is the time of new approaches, particularly in US policies, steps and statements. I leave every man to his taste."

We're not so sure of the cartoonish (bản hình mẫu) looks of that massive HRP Sprint Car wing which also acts as a roof or those pieces of plywood in the back, but in the end it's just a matter of every man to his taste when it comes to project cars.

According to the Taimi dating app, most users ratio (tỷ lệ) falls between 10-15%. Even users with the highest desirability rarely get more than 1 like per 3 swipes – every man to his taste. The more desirable you are, the more are your chances for a match and consequent (kết quả) conversation with the average user after initiating activity – and the more your own expectations are likely to exceed (vượt mức) that of average users.

The Norwegian Environment Agency released images to the public and reported that a total of 323 of the animals were killed during the storm, including 70 calves (con thú con).

A spokesperson for the agency, Kjartan Knutsen, told The Associated Press that reindeer tend to huddle together (túm tụm vào với nhau; nằm rúc vào nhau) in bad weather (thời tiết xấu) which could be the reason why so many were killed at once.

He lamented (than vãn, phàn nàn), “We have not heard about such numbers before. I don’t know if there were several lightning strikes, but it happened in one moment.”

"Every man is the architect of his own fortune" nghĩa là gì?

"Every man is the architect of his own fortune" = Mỗi người tự dựng cơ đồ của chính mình -> Mọi quyết định và hành động của bạn sẽ xác định cuộc sống của bạn như thế nào.

Ví dụ
Biographies (tiểu sử) of Prince, Salvador Dali and Stalin wrestle for space with books by everyone from Murakami to Truman Capote to David Byrne’s How Music Works, while a poster picked up on a trip to India years ago emblazoned (tán dương) with the words ‘Every man is the architect of his own fortune’ shares wall space with a Smallville poster and a small portrait of Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

While every man is the architect of his own fortune, Russell King made his fortune being one.Russell “Russ” King is the oldest family member of the oldest continuously-operating architecture firm in New York State — and the third oldest in the country — which celebrated its 150th year anniversary last March with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the redesigned and renamed King & King Architecture Library at Syracuse University.

Running through the series is the theme of oppressed (bị áp bức) women finding a new way in society. “’Every woman is the architect of her own fortune’ is a Dutch motto (khẩu hiệu, phương châm) that I changed from ‘every man is the architect of his own fortune’,” Burton said. “It’s a comment on how we tell ourselves stories in order to survive…does she hold the key to her own fate or does this miniaturist? "Every man for himself" = Thân ai người nấy lo -> Mỗi người tự lo làm việc của chính mình để có sự thành công riêng của mình, như trong một công việc có tính cạnh tranh.

Ví dụ
“It’s a phenomenon (hiện tượng) to me," he said. "It’s a very self-sacrificing area for someone like me who comes from a place where it’s usually every man for himself. Franklin is my home. I love Nashville, but I love Franklin even more.”

As far as Easter Road boss Heckingbottom is concerned, it’s every man for himself in the race to grab a lifebelt (đai cứu đắm). Both have endured turbulent (hỗn loạn, sự thay đổi bất thường) starts to the season as their respective sides have struggled.

“There are definitely moments where it’s every man for himself,” Reijnen said. “There is a part of me that wishes there was a ‘gruppetto boss’ who could make that call. There are moments when you’re going as hard as you can, and that’s your only choice.”

"Dimber damber upright man" = Từ lóng chỉ đại ca/tên đầu sỏ của một băng nhóm trộm cắp, những kẻ vô lại hoặc nhóm tà giáo.

Ví dụ

"Dead man's hand" nghĩa là gì?

"Dead man's hand" = Bàn tay tử thần (người chơi bài cầm trong tay đôi 8 và đôi át đen) -> Điềm báo/điều rủi ro/không may mắn

Ví dụ
Hicock's real death occurred in much the same way, even down to the hand of cards he had at the time of his death. A character mentions Hicock had a pair of black aces and black eights. Following Hicock's death, that hand was known as the “dead man’s hand” and is considered bad luck.

He sent Jeremy Barron out with the dead man's hand, outkicking (loại) that of Barron's ace-seven. Nerenberg kept his foot on the gas pedal, applying immense (lớn, nặng) pressure to the short-stacks during the latter part of the night and will be second on the leaderboard to start the final day.

The dead man’s hand is a slang term used in poker (bài tây) for a two pair of black aces (quân át) and black eights, although its meaning has changed over time. The story goes that lawman (người thi hành luật) and gambler “Wild Bill” Hickok was shot while holding the dead man’s hand, which is why it’s considered an unlucky two pair in poker today.

"Be going cheap" có nghĩa là được đem bán với giá rẻ, được đem bán hạ giá.

Ví dụ
Two decent oil stocks are going cheap at the moment if a pipeline play isn’t your thing right now.

If 1TB is a bit rich for you, the 500GB is going cheap too, at £55, which is slightly less than half the normal price.

"Fix somebody with a look/stare/gaze" = gắn (chặt) mắt nhìn ai đó -> nghĩa là nhìn vào ai đó chằm chằm/dữ dội/mãnh liệt.

Ví dụ
Some women look away from the lens, some fix you with a stare that resonates (dội lên) loss and pain, which can eventually make you look away.

Fundraisers (người gây quỹ), Lewis adds, can expect a fair hearing: "Grade is extremely engaging (hấp dẫn), but sometimes he will fix you with a stare that says 'I want to get to the point here'."

"Pile it/them high and sell it/them cheap" = xếp thành chồng cao và bán rẻ -> cụm từ này nghĩa là bán sản phẩm nào đó số lượng lớn với giá rẻ.

Ví dụ
He began stacking (xếp chồng) his products, rather than selling them in bundles – the famous ‘pile it high and sell it cheap’ philosophy (triết lý) that became the title of his 1972 biography (hồi ký).

The Tesco founder, Jack Cohen, was an enterprising market trader who brought modern supermarket retailing to postwar Britain. Nearly a century later, Cohen, nicknamed “Slasher Jack” because he liked to “pile it high and sell it cheap”, is making a high street comeback.

"Speak ill of" nghĩa là gì?

Ơ xin lỗi mà, đừng nghĩ gì nhé Photo by Guillaume Meurice from Pexels

'Speak ill of someone or something' = nói xấu, những điều không tốt, phỉ báng ai hay cái gì.

Ví dụ
Prince Abdullah, who now assumes 100 per cent control of the club, claims he is ‘offended’ (khó chịu) when people speak ill of the Bin Ladens – suggesting 9/11 mastermind Osama was just their ‘black sheep’.

James Mattis is continuing to hold his tongue about what he truly thinks of his former boss. "I will not speak ill of a sitting (đương nhiệm) president. I'm not going to do it," President Donald Trump's former defense secretary told CBS News in an interview set to air Sunday morning.

We all know the massive sway that celebrities (người nổi tiếng) can have on industries, and food production is a favorite platform for many of them. Khi bạn đang "in a fix" có nghĩa là bạn đang ở trong một tình huống rắc rối.

Ví dụ
The states seem to be in a fix over whether they can notify (thông báo) lower fines (tiền phạt) for compoundable (có thể dàn xếp/thoả thuận) offences (lỗi/sự phạm tội).

With the Airport Authority of India (Cơ quan Hàng không Ấn Độ - AAI) deciding to shut (đóng cửa) the Jammu airport for at least 15 days from October 1 to resurface (làm lại bề mặt) the runway, the authorities (các quan chức chính quyền) seem to be in a fix to deal with the situation arising out after suspension (sự đình chỉ) of all commercial flights.

Nhìn nè, nhìn anh ngầu chưa mấy cưng Photo by Маша Реймерс from Pexels

'For good or ill' = dù khỏe hay yếu, tốt hay xấu -> bất kể kết quả, ảnh hưởng của hành động, sự thật đó là gì.

Ví dụ
Former cabinet colleagues say, for good or ill, September 4th, 2015 was the making of Angela Merkel. “Those who say Merkel has no principles,” said ex-foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel, “were taught a lesson.”

The emperor (con đực đầu đàn) penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the largest of all living penguin species and the only one that breeds during the Antarctic winter. A recent study gives a sneak peek into how the penguins might respond to disappearing stable sea ice conditions brought by climate change — for good or ill.

Visual political communication has become increasingly important over recent years. It is central to the politics of illusion, and plays an important role in the phenomenon of populist rhetoric. Visuals are thus central to the politics of our time, for good or ill, with the power to stimulate emotions and elicit (khơi gợi) engagement – among an often disengaged and apathetic electorate.

Pushing 70, the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has dominated the political life of his country for much of the past two decades – for good or ill. To put things into a British context, it is as if Tony Blair was still running Britain, give or take a few absences, and with no great electoral mandate. Indeed, so diminished is Mr Netanyahu’s popular support in these legislative elections that it may just be possible his long reign is drawing to a close.

"Go to bed with the chickens" nghĩa là gì?

Có thể suy ra từ "Get up with the chickens", "Go to bed with the chickens" có nghĩa là đi ngủ vào một giờ đặc biệt sớm, khi mặt trời chỉ mới vừa xuống núi (sớm như giờ gà đi ngủ vậy).

Ví dụ
"I like to go out at night and have a good time. My husband sips and nips (nhâm nhi/ nhấm nháp) on a bottle all day long. He goes to bed with the chickens and here I sit. What can I do?"

When the meal was ended the Bishop said: "I think I will go to bed with the chickens and the children," said Bishop Hegan. "I am a tired man to-night. Tom—young Tom, I mean—suppose you come help me to take off my apron (tạp dề). Lord Bishops wear aprons, Tom, don't they?" He looked at his nephew with a twinkle in his eye.

In the country--so they told us--you never needed an alarm clock to rouse (khuấy động/đánh thức) you at dawn (bình minh). Subsequently (rồi thì/rồi sau đó), by personal experience, I found this to be true. You never need an alarm clock--if you keep chickens. You may not go to bed with the chickens, but you get up with them, unless you are a remarkably sound sleeper (sound sleeper = someone who sleeps deeply).
