"Take the Michael out of" nghĩa là gì?

"Take the Michael out of" -> nghĩa là trêu đùa, chế giễu, chế nhạo ai.

Ví dụ
Comedy (hài kịch) allows you to take the michael out of anyone.

Lucas and Fielding were more of a match in their shared love of surrealist (siêu thực) humour, while the Little Britain comedian endeared himself to many with his willingness to take the Michael out of judge Paul Hollywood, and his impersonation (đóng vai) of Boris Johnson’s baffling coronavirus briefings (“If you must bake in a tent bake in a tent, but please don’t bake in a tent.”) Back with ‘ole blue eyes Hollywood on judging duties was Prue Leith and her colourful to the point of retina-searing spectacles.

A roguish Irishman sat alone on a bar stool (ghế đẩu) in an empty studio, smoking a cigarette, holding a drink and serving up hilarious helpings of sacred cowburger. He particularly liked to take the Michael out of the Catholic Church, but everything was fair game for Dave Allen, especially authority figures.

Recall when the press (bài áo), tried to talk to Portia at some opening, she told them to take the mike out of her face, because the Press is rude (thô lỗ), to be pushing mike in her face.

"Middle for diddle" nghĩa là gì?

"Middle for diddle" -> nghĩa là người ném phi tiêu gần hồng tâm nhất sẽ được chơi đầu tiên.

Ví dụ
Those who want to participate because they just enjoy the game of darts and are up for a bit of fun will pay €3 to play. Both groups will pay out for 1st and 2nd places and there will also be the “Middle for Diddle” mini-competition which will see the winner scooping (thu về) a sizeable prize.

Middle for diddle as 'random' Ryanair free seating beats lottery odds (số lẻ) to stick you away from window and aisle (lối đi giữa dãy ghế). In a scientific study all 16 passengers who didn't pay to reserve a seat ended up in a middle seat at odds of around around 1:540,000,000.

It’s taken a while for David Cameron to work out how best to answer these shorties. He started by waffling (nói dông dài) like billy-o, tying himself up in knots. Then he tried a short reply and came a cropper there as well. So now he goes middle for diddle with a medium-length, pithy reply. Spending up. Doctors up. Bureaucrats down. Allegedly.

"Yellow-bellied chicken" nghĩa là gì?

"Yellow-bellied chicken" = con gà bụng vàng -> nghĩa là người rất hèn nhát.

Ví dụ
Then, on April 4, Stathakis stopped the meeting and ordered the TV cameras off when Golasa refused to stop attacking Flynn. “You can’t take the heat (chịu đựng), can you?” Turner bellowed (gầm, rống lên) from the audience. “Why don’t you put this on camera, you yellow-bellied chicken.”

In the most basic variation, two cars drive directly at one another; each driver has the option to continue driving straight or to swerve (chuyển hướng).  The best outcome for the driver is to bravely continue straight while his opponent swerves like a yellow-bellied chicken.

Romney is a boot (giày) lickin', yellow bellied, chicken *hit head, low life, scumbag (thằng khốn) RINO turd. Takes his shortcomings out on Trump because Obama mopped the floor with his sorry behind. Can't believe I voted for that dirt bag.

"Pretty please with sugar on top?" nghĩa là gì?

"Pretty please with sugar on top?" = "làm ơn" (có tẩm đường) -> cách nói thậm xưng của "làm ơn".

Ví dụ
Can we stop already with the Jaylen Brown trade rumors (rùm beng), please? Pretty please with sugar on top. Who wants to trade this guy? Not me. Not anyone I’ve ever had a conversation with. Not anyone with a partially developed brain. Not Danny Ainge I certainly hope.

Chuck again... Yes, the article is much longer than the snippet (mẩu tin), and once again I implore (cầu xin) you to read it, please, pretty please with sugar on top? And I thank long time reader Bob for sending me the link above yesterday...

With how the Cowboys came back from a 20-point deficit (tiền thiếu hụt) in the last two quarters against the Atlanta Falcons to win, you can only imagine the amount of backlash Smith got from Cowboys fans. “Do not put through this noise for two consecutive weeks,” Smith said. “Please! Pretty please with sugar on top!

The question now for Burgum, Mahoney and the rest of the pretty-please-with-sugar-on-top mayors is simple: What number of dead North Dakotans will be enough for you to impose (áp đặt) a mask mandate (bắt buộc) and strict limitations on gathering that will have the teeth of enforcement?

Centurio senex is a wrinkle-faced bat found in Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. Interestingly, this species shows a distinct sexual dimorphism (hiện tượng lưỡng hình): Adult males have a fold of skin under the chin that can be raised to cover the lower part of the face like a mask (mặt nạ, khẩu trang), suggesting that it might be used during courtship (tán tỉnh) behavior. But this species has rarely been studied, so little is known about its behavior and natural history. In the new study, the researchers report the first observations of echolocation and mating behavior of C. senex. The authors analyzed synchronized audio and video recordings from an aggregation of males located on 53 perches in Costa Rica over a period of six weeks.

This species appears to use lek courtship, in which females choose mates from clusters of sexually displaying presumably territorial males. Among mammals, lek courtship is known to be used by only 12 species, mainly seals and hoofed mammals. When females approached, the perched males beat their wings and emitted very loud, low-frequency whistling calls. The males lowered their masks immediately before copulation (sự giao cấu, giao hợp), then sang enthusiastically and raised their masks again after mating.

"Come to a climax" nghĩa là gì?

Cho hàng xóm biết thế nào là nhạc hay :)) Photo by Anne Nygård on Unsplash

"Come to a climax" có climax là điểm cao nhất -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đạt đến đỉnh điểm, cực độ.

Ví dụ
It’s been a long year for county clerks (thư kí) in West Virginia with a presidential election year during a pandemic. All of the preparations come to a climax Tuesday with the General Election. Those clerks have already taken in more than 253,000 ballots from the 10-day early voting period and as of Monday, 136,000 mail-in absentee ballots from a process expanded because of the pandemic.

A Lower unemployment (thất nghiệp) rate is causing some Republicans to think that a smaller bill may be more appropriate. With Joe Biden making it his priority (ưu tiên) to deal with the virus, we can expect talks to come to a climax this time around. Stay healthy stay safe.

It remains unclear how The Immortal Hulk will end, but we know it will come to a climax at Issue 50. In the gulp before its final 10-issue gasp, though, its grisly (ghê tởm) obsession with consumption continues, now thanks to classic Hulk villain, The Leader (Samuel Sterns).

It had all come to a climax during the 2018-19 season when Honka had a prime chance to claim a starting spot under Montgomery’s coaching staff. Injuries hit the Stars’ defense hard in early November, which opened the door for Honka to prove his worth.

"Ace boon-coon" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Tyler Nix on Unsplash

"Ace boon-coon" -> nghĩa là bạn thân (được dùng trong cộng đồng người da đen).

Ví dụ
He refers to her as “my best friend, my partner in crime, my ace boon coon, my Bonnie to my Clyde.” His mother was diagnosed (chẩn đoán) with multiple sclerosis (xơ cứng tế bào) in 1999, although Moore admitted to being in denial (phủ nhận) about it for a few years.

It's an even older story among blacks than is often known: The affectionate (trìu mến) use of the n-word was well established a century ago and before, and coon was used then in the exact same way (ace boon coon meant "good friend").

‘Happy birthday to my ace boon coon, my right hand, my day to day manager that keeps my world twirling (xoay tròn) and she’s always got my back. She makes sure that I smile every day, and I don’t go into those dark places. Today is your day, it’s your muthafuckin birthday!!! Go KK, it’s your birthday!! Love you @kristinakhorram,’ Diddy captioned his post.

His paintings reveal a deep dedication (cống hiến) to racial and ethnic harmony. In his abundant body of work, he shares much of his personal experiences, be it sports, music, ladies, dance, education, the church, his Jewish neighborhood in LA or his beginnings here in the South. I was blessed to have called him one of my best, “forever” friends. He called me his “Ace Boon Coon,” which I understood to be a term of endearment (yêu mến).

"Use (something) as a carrot" = dùng như củ cà rốt -> nghĩa là dùng điều gì làm động lực để thuyết phục người khác.

Ví dụ
While being fit (thích hợp) for the final might serve as an incentive (khích lệ) for McGinn, Smith has warned the rest of his squad not to use it as a carrot for raising their game over the next three Premier League matches prior to what will be the club’s ninth league cup final.

The kingdom can now adjust the level of its voluntary cut without asking any fellow members, and use it as a carrot and stick, while ensuring the kingdom has greater influence (tầm ảnh hưởng) over other OPEC members.

Though the program is currently on hiatus (thiếu sót), Stott characterized it as a success, generating more than $7,000 for local businesses. But it served an even deeper purpose as “a carrot for people to really get their online presence” significantly beefed up, Stott said.

Cabrera's gets 20 vacation days in addition to the five leave days required by the state, with unused vacation days paid out annually, according to his contract (hợp đồng). Not taking those days could equate (tương đương) to as much as $27,000. “For districts that do pay out unused leave, that can be a rich benefit that a district may use as a carrot,” Campbell said.

"Dangle a carrot in front of" nghĩa là gì?

"Dangle a carrot in front of" = nhử bằng cà rốt -> nghĩa là nhờ ai đó làm việc và hứa sẽ trả công.

Ví dụ
It looks like the Sister Wives family turned out another sales rep who thinks outside the box. It seems as if Mykelti figured out how to dangle a carrot in front of her customers to lure (dụ dỗ) them in.

After the Seven, the most powerful group of Supes in The Boys universe is Payback. For that reason, when Vought thinks that they’ve had enough and want to get rid of (trừ khử, loại bỏ) the Boys, they send in Payback to do the job. They even dangle a carrot in front of them in the form of a promise: if they are successful in their efforts, they would be given the same status as the Seven.

"It wasn't something where you couldn’t dangle a carrot in front of me because if there was anything I disagreed with or I didn’t like, I would just say, ‘OK I am not doing it.’ “If it resulted in me going home, I would go home. I didn’t have to be there.”

"Something else again" nghĩa là tình huống hoàn toàn khác. Được dùng để nhấn mạnh rằng thực tế hiện tại khắc nghiệt hơn nhiều so với thực trạng/tình huống khác.

Ví dụ
The Wallabies beating New Zealand in Brisbane to square the ledger from a belting the week before was one thing, but Argentina’s stunning win over the All Blacks in Sydney a week later was something else again.

“The turnaround has been stunning,” says Bill Russo, CEO of Automobility, a Shanghai-based automotive consultancy (cố vấn, tư vấn). “The moment lockdowns lifted, there was a shift in behaviour – not just to pre-pandemic levels but something else again.”

"I'd had reasonably big job at Zespri and certainly bigger at Fonterra, when I was there we had botulism and DCD and huge stress, you know?" While Muller had a "bit of a challenge sleeping" during this time, he said he "got through it well." However, the stress of being National's Leader was a very different experience for Muller. "But this was completely something else again. Just entirely debilitating and because it caught me by surprise ... it became a very, very dark journey for me." Muller said he began to develop physical symptoms, such as a "serious prickling" in his head. This was followed by "waves of anxiety that just got worse and worse."

"Say over and over again" nghĩa là gì?

"Say over and over (again)" nghĩa là nói đi nói lại, nhắc đi nhắc lại (mãi).

Ví dụ
If you didn’t see it, Jordan’s way of coping with his fear was to say over and over again as he lay flat on his back with snakes everywhere... ‘Happy Place, Happy Place, Turf Moor’... the home of his beloved Burnley FC. Thinking of his football club was a way for him to think ‘happy’ in his darkest of times!

Dermatologists (bác sĩ chuyên khoa da liễu) will say over-and-over again that the best skin-care advice they can give you is to wash your face. This wisdom is especially important when you’re dealing with a breakout or have oily skin. Washing your face is critical for getting rid of the dirt, grime, and bacteria that cause pimples, which means you’ll want to find the best face wash for acne to get the job done.

“I think I’ll say I was initially fairly sceptical (hoài nghi) of President Trump when he won in 2016, but I think he’s been a lot better than I would have imagined. And he’s governed a lot more like an ordinary Republican president than I would have imagined. And for that, I’m very satisfied. “But I also think, I think the idea that he’s uniquely dangerous or uniquely unqualified like we’ve seen the media say over and over again, I think it’s really panned out differently. We’re seeing peace deals across the Middle East. Recently, he’s been tough on China has been tough on Iran with no negative consequences, really. So I think in terms of just the overall sense about President Trump, it’s been better.”

"Run (something) by (one) again" nghĩa là giải thích/thông báo lại với ai lần nữa.

Ví dụ
“Could you run it by me again…what’s an MMORPG?” I would ask. Twenty minutes later I would be all caught up, and resume watching the gameplay with renewed fervor (hăng hái, nhiệt tình). I had grown up playing video games — the Diablo series, StarCraft, WarCraft — like everybody else. I just didn’t realize at the time how popular and, in many ways revolutionary, gaming would become.

The headline in the Mail on Sunday just about summed it all up: 'It's Nut Nut not Nut Nuts!' Eh? I'm sorry, just run that by me again. Apparently, Boris Johnson's girlfriend is known disparagingly as 'Princess Nut Nut' not 'Princess Nut Nuts', writes our political editor. On social media, 'allies of Dominic Cummings' use emojis (nope, me neither) to portray Carrie Anne Symonds as a cartoon princess accompanied by peanuts.

I’ll run that by you again so it can sink in. Rogen plays one Herschel Greenbaum, who along with his beloved bride Sarah (Sarah Snook) flees his fictional homeland after the Cossacks destroy the town on their wedding day. Arriving at Ellis Island and met with casual anti-Semitism (chủ nghĩa bài Do Thái), the Greenbaums settle in to pursue the American Dream, with Sarah becoming pregnant and Herschel finding work at a local factory — but one day Herschel falls into a huge vat of pickles, and the factory is subsequently shut down for numerous health code violations, and Herschel is presumed dead and forgotten for an entire century.

"Give (one) the heebie-jeebies" -> nghĩa là khiến ai lo sợ, lo lắng, sợ hãi tột độ.

Ví dụ
Reid crafts a narrative (câu chuyện) that keeps readers guessing until the final plot twist. Trust me, you won’t see it coming. And the movie will give you the heebie-jeebies all over again, featuring horror movie star Toni Colette, of “Hereditary” fame, in the role of Jake’s mother.

If you’re looking for a fun and yet incredibly creepy platformer, then LIMBO is a must. This shadowy game will give you the heebie-jeebies more than once. With such wonderful quirks , LIMBO is delightfully weird (lạ lùng). If you’ve played it before, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The game features ingenious puzzles and an award-winning aesthetic (thẩm mỹ) that will haunt you and stick with you long after you’ve put the game down.

Sometimes, a well-placed song in a horror movie can change the way you hear it forever. Here are 11 songs that we can't help but associate with films that give you the heebie-jeebies.

Halloween is just around the corner and there’s nothing spookier (ghê rợn) than creepy-crawlers to give you the heebie-jeebies. WTMJ’s Melissa Barclay asked Entomologist at U-W Madison PJ Liesch, otherwise known as the Wisconsin Bug Guy, about the top 4 spooky insects (côn trùng) around the world.

"Make your flesh creep" nghĩa là gì?

"Make your flesh creep" -> nghĩa là cảm thấy hoảng sợ, ghê tởm, khó chịu; nổi da gà.

Ví dụ
“Where did this doubling (đóng thế) come from? What was their purpose in presenting such a graph? It was the purpose of the fat boy in [Charles Dickens novel] The Pickwick Papers – ‘I wants to make your flesh creep’.” Sir Desmond said he had “celebrated” the ascension of Mr Johnson to Tory leader and PM, as he thought he would lead a “sceptical and liberal Conservative administration”.

“I am left wondering if the Prime Minister has not been abducted (bắt cóc) by Dr Strangelove and reprogrammed by the SAGE over to the dark side,” Swayne said. It was yet more “Project Fear”, the veteran Brexiteer declared, even suggesting that Whitty and Vallance simply wanted “to make your flesh creep”.

If you’re looking for a book to make your flesh creep, you can find plenty more Ouija (cầu cơ) boards, malign (độc ác) spirits and fortune-telling in books of the last century – and they are, of course, never barren. A seance – held in a darkened room where spirits might talk, tap out messages, or even appear – was a particularly useful standby for other great crime authors besides Mitchell.

This is a horror (kinh dị) story. As with the most compelling tales that get under your skin and make your flesh creep it is all too easy to envisage (đương đầu) yourself in the role of Tony O'Reilly, an ordinary man who lost control of his betting and entered a terrifying downward spiral that cost him his family and his job and put him in jail.

If you go to vote in the presidential primary and say “None of your beeswax!’’ when the election judge asks you which party (đảng) you support, you won’t get to vote. Mind you, this is for the presidential primary only. But that’s the one most people care about, anyway.

An article in the New York Post stated that Millennials are the most eager to be able to explore and travel again. All of the pandemic restrictions have only made people miss the outdoors more, and it's very likely that with the relaxing of these constraints, many people will be back on the road again. Millennials have become a key travelling segment as they have demonstrated a stronger love for experiences over material goods. The cheaper airfare has encouraged more avid travellers to go ahead with their travel plans.

"I think that it will be a slow reintroduction to safaris and I mean, I've had a couple of inquiries about people saying what do you think and I'd love to say 'absolutely let's go'." Anybody on my list can click once and unsubscribe and I will never darken your doorstep again. Given all of that, I want it to feel like I'm writing to you.

Carlos is visited by Raina Creel, Detective Yilmaz, and company, his captured Aunt Linda in tow. Carlos gets smart with Yilmaz and tries to get away from him – by running deeper inside his pawn shop and home, a move which has never worked for anyone in any situation ever – but is soon caught and beaten up by Yilmaz, until Raina puts a stop to it. After all, he should be given a chance to speak now, and maybe he’ll tell them where the Reliquary is. Carlos holds out for as long as he can, but it’s either the Reliquary or his aunt, and blood will always be thicker than whatever liquid magic the Reliquary can offer, so once Raina promises that they’ll never darken his doorstep again, he agrees and goes to get the ancient, powerful artifact (giả tạo, thành phần lạ).

"In the mood for" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Sam Lion from Pexels

"Be in the mood for/to (something)" nghĩa là khao khát, mong muốn điều gì/làm gì. Ngược lại "be in no mood for (something)" nghĩa là cảm thấy chán nản, phiền phức phải làm gì.

Ví dụ
My energy is so low. I’m not in the mood for anything.

I’m always in the mood for long car rides with good music.

I recently realized that I’m an extroverted-introvert (vừa hướng nội vừa hướng ngoại) lol, like I love talking to people but I have to be in the mood for it, otherwise I’m just vibin in my own lil world with no worries whatsoever.

I'm so glad it arrived in time. We were worried it wouldn't. Come on, I'll show you how to get to His Majesty's (nhà vua) den. But don't tell him I called it that. I am so not in the mood for one of his tirades (tràng đả kích) on what it means to be a good assistant. The first thing is always don't talk back.

"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again" nghĩa là gì?

"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again" -> nghĩa là nếu không thành công, cứ tiếp tục nỗ lực.

Ví dụ
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. It's a phrase many of us grew up hearing from our parents, teachers and coaches. And it's one that the team at Charlotte-based startup Ascend Goals lived by for the last year and a half as it worked to secure a $50,000 grant from NC IDEA.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. And again. And again. A Michigan couple with 14 sons welcomed their first daughter into a very large family on Thursday, ending an all-male streak that spans nearly three decades. Mom Kateri Schwandt gave birth to little Maggie Jayne on Thursday at a hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich. The girl weighed 3.4 kilograms (seven pounds, eight ounces) — and she’ll need all of that weight to take on her 14 older brothers.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. This adage seemed to pay off for the clinical development of the drug neflamapimod. After failing to curb cognitive decline in people with AD, the drug appears to have done just that in people with dementia (sa sút trí tuệ) with Lewy bodies (DLB), according to results from a small Phase 2 trial presented at this year’s virtual Clinical Trials on Alzheimer’s Disease (CTAD) meeting, held November 4-7.

“Ever and again” nghĩa là gì?

“Ever and again” nghĩa (từ cổ) là thỉnh thoảng, đôi khi, không thường xuyên.

Ví dụ
I have no sleep tonight. Ever and again I open my door and look out on the darkness, my friend!

As for the right of assembly, physical campuses have ever and again served as hotbeds of political agitation (khuấy động chính trị) and cradles (nguồn gốc, cái nôi) of new movements. Students can hardly gather if physically separated, and nobody who has thrilled in a shared protest will ever regard digital assemblies as a substitute for chanting slogans in the streets.

In the upcoming episode of Kundali Bhagya of 16th October 2020, another striking twist will appear as the channel has released a power-packed trailer that contains a lot of suspense. Since it was already seen in the last episode, Preeta along with the ladies had gotten caught. Pawan and Prithvi will reach there to stop the ladies just then and spoil their plan of escaping. Pawan will scold Preeta for not listening to him ever and again tries to convince her to marry Prithvi.

"Stick or twist" nghĩa là gì?

"Stick or twist" -> nghĩa là không hành động (stick) hoặc thay đổi (twist), thường là kết luận cuối cùng.

Ví dụ
Fiabema is at ease playing on the last shoulder or dropping between the lines and has already shown the sort of clever movement that will leave defenders unsure (không chắc chắn) whether to stick or twist.

But there were times when Derby didn’t know whether to stick or twist when Warnock’s side pressed hard and high, and Marc Bola hooked a shot wide after one concerted spell of Boro pressure.

Liverpool face Sadio Mané selection headache (đau đầu), and Jürgen Klopp must decide whether to stick or twist. An unkind run of matches in the coming weeks could force the Liverpool boss into changes.

Manager Neil Lennon, a former team-mate of McNamara's, has come under fire for the Hoops' form recently as they have fallen to 11 points behind leaders Rangers. And the former right-back feels it's now time for the club to make a decision (quyết định) - either stick or twist.

"What’s really good witcha" nghĩa là gì?

Kiểu "dap" được nhắc đến trong bài. Photo by Allan Mas from Pexels

"What’s (really) good witcha?" = "how are you" -> nghĩa là hỏi thăm tình hình đối phương.

Ví dụ
“What's really good witcha?” Tashina walked in on Devon changing clothes. "Nothing much, just gotta party to be at later on."

What's good, witcha? I'm chillin' family, it's been a long time. Yeah, ya boy just graduated tonight. I'm about to celebrate and do it real big.

My email from my boo. I opened it, excited: "What's tha damn deal, mama? So what's really good witcha? I'm chillen (thư giãn) and trying not to swing on these crazey ass niggas but ma-ma, they are really plucking my nerves (làm khó chịu)."...

"What's up man? What's good wit cha?” They said as the guys gave each other dap (kiểu chào bạn bè). Although it had been awhile, I knew it was Marcus. We all said what's up but that was pretty much it for the moment. As the night passed on, Marcus made his way over to me and asked how I was doing.
