"Go off the boil" nghĩa là gì?

Ngọn lửa sắp tàn. Photo by  Farzad Mohsenvand

"Go off the boil" = Hết sôi/đã nguội -> Mất đi sự thích thú/quan tâm; ít cần đến cái gì và không còn nhiệt huyết vào việc gì.

Ví dụ
However, Cooper says the stresses and strains (sự căng thẳng) of the festive schedule meant he was not all that surprised to see his side go off the boil.

Missed a great chance, but held the ball up decently enough in the first half. Another to go off the boil after the break, and he'll have been hoping to make more of an impact.

‘I’ve got talent, John Higgins has got talent, Mark Williams had talent, Judd’s got talent. ‘If you don’t put the hours in and dedicate (cống hiến) your life to it then it’s easy to go off the boil.

"Go nuts (quả hạch, đầu)" = Trở nên điên khùng, quá điên đầu và tức giận.

Ví dụ
For now, gamers must settle for gawking (trố mắt ra nhìn một cách ngớ ngẩn) at crazy-go-nuts monitors with intoxicating (say sưa) specifications and a price tag to match. They're awesome.

The TD Garden crowd loudly chanted Tacko's name throughout the quarter, and Brad Stevens clearly loved the enthusiasm. Before putting the 7-foot-5 phenom in the game, the C's head coach acknowledged the crowd and encouraged fans to go nuts.

Wasting time when you’re young isn’t a problem. What else are you going to do with it? I have been playing video games almost my entire life. It has been a pleasure and a privilege experiencing the monumental advances in the industry, taking me from the 16-bit thrills of Streets of Rage to swinging through a stunning and fully-realised Manhattan in the latest Spiderman. I genuinely love playing these games. But if I’m being completely honest, and it pains me to say this, they are starting to feel like a waste of time. Again, when you’re young, who cares? Go nuts! You have all the time in the world!

"Go non-linear" nghĩa là gì?

Rất là feeling. Photo by  Harley-Davidson

"Go non-linear" = Vô tuyến /không thẳng -> Trở nên đầy năng lượng hoặc được khuấy động bởi điều gì mình thích thú hoặc quan tâm; quá kích động hoặc giận dữ bởi sự ám ảnh nào đó.

Ví dụ
The lesson of mid-2011 is that once confidence breaks, the bond spreads of the weakest EMU states can go “non-linear” in a heartbeat.

Gamers are so quick to lash out against those who don’t understand our hobby. We go non-linear when people claim that games aren’t art, or that games cause real-world violence, or that we all need to grow up and stop wasting our time.

Infrastructure investments (đầu tư vào cơ sở hạ tầng), though they entail much higher upfront capital costs, can be addressed using a similar, system-wide, holistic approach. When a district embraces 1-to-1, and particularly BYOD, the demands on the network go non-linear.

"Go native" nghĩa là gì?

Một được một lần làm thổ dân. Photo by  Andrew James

"Go native" = Trở nên như người bản địa -> Thích nghi hoặc sống đúng với phong tục tập quán, con người và văn hóa của vùng đất mới mình đang ở.

Ví dụ
When people “go native,” they risk partially entering an unfamiliar group only to find their own kind also don’t like it. Shedding one’s identity so effortlessly suggests little value placed on one’s tribe in the first place. People wonder why and question where the line is drawn. To please the natives, that’s understood, but if it’s to shed despised traits for complete reinvention of self?

There are two obvious ways to go about designing a museum for the venerable (thiêng liêng) Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet, and each has obvious drawbacks (trở ngại). The first would be to go native. Audemars Piguet—best known for its Royal Oak model, the first luxury sports watch—was founded almost 150 years ago in the village of Le Brassus in the Joux Valley. The village hasn’t changed all that much since then, and the locals clearly like it that way.

I couldn’t understand why. But my guess is that to ask them—even if they didn’t speak it as fluently as English—to perform in their native language, a naturalness emerges (thể hiện ra sự mất tự nhiên). I think if you’re training to be an actor in America, you have an idea of what an American actor is. It just felt to me at times that when they were speaking English, that they were doing an impression (ấn tượng) of what an actor is supposed to be. To go “native” was to become that much more effortless.

"Go like hot cakes" nghĩa là gì?

Bánh ngọt, bánh ngọt đi! Photo by  Rae Goldman

"Go like hot cakes" = Như bánh nóng hổi -> Bán cái gì rất chạy/rất nhanh; rất thành công về mặt thương mại.

Ví dụ
NDG resident Domenico Galle says parking spots near the busy street already go like hot cakes. “It’s very hard to find parking,” he said.

Just three years ago Lollapalooza tickets would sell out within mere hours of going on sale. The four-day passes would go like hot cakes, and so did the single-day tickets. This year, Saturday was the only single-day pass that sold-out (đã được bán hết).

The band will play at Semenoff Stadium on February 15, and if the band's gig (hợp đồng thuê ban nhạc biểu diễn) at the same venue in March 2018 is anything to go by - they sold out all 10,000 tickets well before the show - tickets for the February show are expected to go like hot cakes. Six60 are the only band to sell out the Whangārei stadium.

"Go on a binge" nghĩa là gì?

Khi không có bạn chung vui thì làm gì? Photo by

"Go on a binge" = Cứ tiếp tục cuộc say sưa chè chén -> Say mê cái gì đó tới cực độ; uống quá nhiều rượu.

Ví dụ
“I have an obsessive personality and it did become an obsessionc (sự ám ảnh),” she says. “You name it, I tried it. I’d get my mum to buy all the stuff, but I’d never stick at it and I’d go on a binge instead.

There are tons more than can help give you a little boost when necessary. These goods are rich in good vitamins and minerals (chất khoáng) as well as fiber (chất xơ) and protein. But that doesn’t mean you should go on a binge and eat pounds of these good for you foods. The key is moderation (sự điều tiết, điều hòa).

Holidays meant lounging (uể oải) by the fire, enjoying the time off with family or friends over a warm meal, and watching favorite movies all night long. For a change, instead of movies, why not go on a binge-watching spree (vui chơi miệt mài, chè chén lu bù) with documentaries (phim tài liệu)? And not just any documentary for that matter. Feast your eyes (and your mind) on these wildlife shows offered by BBC this holiday season. Here are the schedules for each day.

"Go on for ages" nghĩa là gì?

Hẹn hò thâu đêm. Photo by nic

"Go on for ages" = Cứ tiếp tục/kiên gan/bền bỉ trong suốt một quãng thời gian dài.

Ví dụ
While we could go on for ages about how worthy of an investment the gadget its, we'll let the stellar 4.3-star rating from over 13,000 Amazon customers speak for itself.

There is something about the new year when you are younger. Firstly, years seem to go on for ages and redemption (sự thực hiện, bồi thường) in the form of resolutions is all the more possible, as it really does feel like a new era (kỷ nguyên) has dawned. In fact, when I was younger it even felt possible that the next new year might never arrive because it felt so far away.

HBO programming president Casey Bloys didn’t watch the Game of Thrones series finale back when it aired in May, on account of him already having seen it so many times during the lead-up. “You could see the debate starting,” Bloys said of the extremely divided response to the episode, talking to The Ringer. “And the debate has subsided. But it’ll probably go on for ages.”

"Go on the dole" nghĩa là gì?

Rồi ai cũng sẽ về già. Photo by Arnel Hasanovic

"Go on the dole" = lĩnh chẩn, sống nhờ vào của bố thí; lĩnh tiền trợ cấp thất nghiệp, sống nhờ vào tiền trợ cấp thất nghiệp.

Ví dụ
"You get to a point where you have to look forward into the real world and set up a life and unfortunately a 44-week contract doesn't allow that. You don't want to go on the dole, which is what a lot of League of Ireland players have to resort to."

Canada provides paid leave through its “Employment Insurance,” which also supports workers during unemployment, illness, and family caregiving. I get why some of its southern neighbors envy (đố kỵ) this socialist nirvana (cõi niết bàn). Who wouldn’t want to go on the dole at those times, eh?

Held up as role models for then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher’s “enterprise culture,” their ambitions were, in fact, much more prosaic (nôm na, tầm thường). Rather than go on the dole, they used the (recently re-launched) Enterprise Allowance Scheme to set up “micro-businesses” — knitting sweaters, repairing bicycles, freelance photography — keeping going by undercutting other businesses and by gross self-exploitation. Very few succeeded over the long term.

"Go on to a better land" nghĩa là gì?

Bình yên nơi đâu? Photo by  Mael BALLAND

"Go on to a better land" = Đi về miền đất tươi đẹp -> Chết (nói giảm nói tránh)

Ví dụ
A Robbinston man died Sunday night in a vehicle accident in Pembroke, becoming at least the seventh person to go on to a better land as a result of car crashes on Maine roads so far in the first days of 2020.

Two California prisoners who died late last month became the 37th and 38th prisoners to go on to a better land by suicide in the state’s prisons in 2019. Their deaths pushed the suicide rate among prisoners to 30.3 deaths per 100,000 incarcerated (bị tống giam) people — a 30-year high in the state.

However, tonight, Shona looks like she might go on to a better land when she suddenly collapses in David’s arms after seeming like she is okay. She is speaking to her husband and the family and seems to be in just a bit of pain but suddenly, she takes a turn for the worse – is tragedy (thảm họa) about to strike for David all over again?

"Go on the sick list" nghĩa là gì?

Chiếc giường đắt nhất thế giới là giường bệnh. Photo by Daan Stevens

"Go/be on the sick list" = Ốm liên miên, sức khỏe yếu ốm và không khỏe.

Ví dụ
The team's only injured player is Jordi Alba, who was recovering from a hamstring (gân kheo) injury to his right thigh when he picked up another injury to the back of his left one. The player is likely to be on the sick list for a month.

Despite spending two months on the sick list due to a dislocated elbow, the 26-year-old still tops the league’s lineout steals chart, with five from his four games played. Friend thinks his talents will be important at a venue where Connacht have never won.

His recuperation (sự hồi phục) also kept him out of trouble. He reported with some relief to his daughter, Ellen, on July 9, 1893: “The doctor says I must go on the sick list for a fortnight (hai tuần) and keep my leg perfectly quiet, so if the Chicago does anything amiss (sai, không đúng) in that time I shall not be the culprit (bị cáo, thủ phạm).”

"Go see Mrs. Murphy" = Đi gặp bà Murphuy -> Từ cổ thể hiện lối nói giảm nói tránh khi muốn đi nhà vệ sinh.

Ví dụ
A 16-year-old ticketed in Manitoba, Canada, for blazing along at speeds over 100 mph told police he was rushing to go see Mrs. Murphy after eating too many wings, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

When they finally reached Brooklyn, the teen was able to convince Williams to let her out of the car so she could go see Mrs. Murphy, at which point she ran into a McDonald's and called police, according to authorities.

Basic improvements would encourage volunteers to stay around after emergency call-outs for critical debriefing sessions. “You might have someone who has to go see Mrs. Murphy and they are itching to get out the door,” he said.

"Go snaky" nghĩa là gì?

"Go snaky" = Đi ngoằn ngoèo - Hành động một cách mất kiểm soát.

Ví dụ
People obsessed with spending online may end up hoarding the things they order, end up in debt, argue with loved ones and completely go snaky.

“There have been So many times we go snaky, even me, and I regret for yesterday’s bad example,” the pontiff (giám mục) told a gathering of thousands were at St. Peter’s Square at the end of the New Year Mass.

Judge Carr then gave "binge drinker" Capewell a dressing down, saying that those who go snaky when drinking are alcoholics and that he either addresses it now or spends the rest of his 20s and 30s in and out of prison.

"Go the knuckle" nghĩa là gì?

"Go the knuckle (khủy)" = Cho một cú đấm; đánh bằng cú đấm (tiếng lóng Australia).

Ví dụ
In the end there was a bat thrown dangerously down the wicket by Renegade Samuels, but those who know the “streetfighter” from the wrong side of the tracks in Jamaica say Warne was lucky Marlon didn’t decide to go the knuckle instead.

Yellow card! Baumjohann does what Baumjohann does, ball on a string and all that, and Aldred has had enough, chopping the playmaker down with cynical (giễu cợt, nhạo báng) intent to rightfully attract a yellow. Can’t believe it’s taken the Roar this long to go the knuckle.

But if larrikin (du côn) language is anything to go by, these youths went way beyond mischievous frolicking (vui nhộn, nô đùa)— jump someone's liver out, put the boot in, stonker, rip into, go the knuckle on and weigh into are just some items from the larrikin's lexicon (thuật ngữ, từ vựng) of fighting words.

"Go through the wringer" nghĩa là gì?

Cặp đôi hoàn cảnh. Photo by  Qizhi Xie

"Go through the wringer" = Đi qua cái máy vắt nước -> Trải qua một thời gian khó khăn và thách thức khiến bạn đau khổ và phiền muộn.

Ví dụ
Love bench cam, think it’s brilliant. Great to see the players go through the wringer as much as everyone else, when they’re watching games.

I can’t begin to imagine not only what it’s like for the players that constantly read their names in the rumors and may not be in the loop. It has to be just as hard for those that are close to the players in those rumors and have to watch their teammates and friends go through the wringer with even less say in the matter.

Christians in Palestine, says Cohen, despair of our church leaders’ endless hiding behind the cover of political neutrality (giữ quan điểm trung lập về mặt chính trị) and their unwillingness to offend their religious dialogue partners. Consequently, he predicts, Jewish-Christian dialogue “is about to go through the wringer”. And he explains why it needs resetting.

"Go to glory" nghĩa là gì?

Thiên đàng gọi tên. Photo by Joshua Gresham

"Go to (one's) glory" = (đùa cợt) lên thiên đường, về chầu trời, về nơi tiên cảnh -> Chết, bị tiêu diệt.

Ví dụ
We must respect our elders, but we also have to remember that they’re going to go to glory before we do and it’s not fair that we have might to suffer through more years of Joe Biden when the decades he’s served in office have been long enough.

"People in eternity (cõi vĩnh hằng) are aware of the fact that loved ones are not saved. This is based on Luke 16 ... In the afterlife we are the same person with real memories of earth. You will know more in heaven than you will on earth, not less. We don't all get a collective lobotomy (phẫu thuật thùy não) when we go to glory."

None of this, though, is what’s recalled in Cuba about the San Zenon storm. There it matters because of the song it inspired Miguel Matamoros to write about surviving its winds. “Every time I remember the ‘ciclon,’ my heart gets sick,” it goes. “The most ‘sabroso’ thing” about the experience, it goes on, was getting on an airplane to return to Cuban soil. “That’s how the story ends,” it concludes. “The dead go to glory and the living dance the ‘son.’”

"Go to the world" nghĩa là gì?

When God made us. Photo by Tatiana Gonzales

"Go to the world" = Đến với thế giới -> (thông tục) kết hôn. Cụm từ này nhấn mạnh sự khác nhau giữa cuộc sống hôn nhân và tôn giáo.

Ví dụ
If you don't mind sharing the spotlight, you can go to the world for free on Valentine's Day at Adelphia in Deptford Township, New Jersey. The restaurant and wedding venue is orchestrating (hòa âm, phối khí) a mass wedding for all couples who wish to tie the knot or renew their vows (lời thề).

Katie is a mental health professional whose type 1 diabetes diagnosis (chẩn đoán mắc bệnh tiểu đường) makes her want to settle down, go to the world, and have kids at a young age. Meanwhile, Derek is a reserved cybersecurity engineer (kỹ sư an ninh mạng) who’s excited about the project but inexperienced in love.

Bachelor Nation watched the love story between Becca Kufrin and Garrett Yrigoyen unfold on The Bachelorette Season 14. The couple hit it off on night one, and as they say, the rest was history, as the finale ended in a romantic proposal (lời cầu hôn). Now, over a year and one bachelorette (độc thân) later, fans are wondering whether they’ll see the couple’s nuptials (hôn nhân, lễ cưới) in the near future. So when will Kufrin and Yrigoyen go to the world? It looks like they’re taking things slow.

"Go to the pack" nghĩa là gì?

"Go to the pack" = Cuốn gói ra đi -> Xuống dốc, giảm giá trị, bị phá hoại, tan tành và thất bại.

Ví dụ
For all that those who have come in have made the difference, a lot of credit must go to the pack, a group of eight players who have coped with every challenge presented to them.

“The twins want to be in the same den (phòng nhỏ riêng) and it causes us a lot of issues with them in separate dens and separate packs,” says the twins’ father, Daniel Wilt. “Neither wanted to go to the pack meeting with only half the family. With the different packs meeting at different locations at the same time, we can’t be in two places at once and ended up going to neither. Our daughter doesn’t understand why she cannot participate in her school’s den and was visibly upset when they had their initial rank advancement. She was forced to go to another school and receive her Bobcat badge without sharing the experience with her brother, father and friends.”

"Go while the going is good" = Hãy đi trong khi còn có thể; hãy tiếp tục tiến trình/thực hiện quá trình khi còn có điều kiện thuận lợi.

Ví dụ
“Maybe it’s just time to go — go, while the going is good,” she said in her address. “Graduates, you know it’s time to go. It’s time for me, too.”

"I will miss the good Guinness also, but sure I miss that every day," he said. As of yet, Pat has no return ticket booked home to the rebel (nổi loạn, chống đối) county and plans to go while the going is good - or in his case, "until the money runs out."

Minnesota is the "Land of 10,000 Lakes,” so why not take advantage of some nearby? Take a stroll around the picturesque (đẹp như tranh) Lake Harriet, rent a kayak (thuyền độc mộc) or canoe at Bde Maka Ska, or have a much-needed day at the beach at Lake Nokomis. Summer is going by quickly, so go while the going is good!

"Go your (own) gait (dáng đi)" = Cứ theo đuổi những gì mình thích và quan tâm.

Ví dụ
"I have the freedom to exercise my talents, go my gait and help lead the company. My co-workers are talented, collaborative and positive."

“As a BU student upperclassman, I’ve learned that the most important aspect of college is using this time to go your gait. This is the time of our lives where we have the most time to do so. Might as well do what you enjoy now and see where that path takes you.”

By the time that she was just 14 years old, she was made the captain of the football (soccer) team at her school in Mumbai, India. "Bros before hoes" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Matheus Ferrero on Unsplash

"Bros before hoes" = anh em trước gái gú -> câu nhắc nhở bông đùa của các chàng trai với nhau rằng tình bạn của họ luôn quan trọng và đứng trước mối quan hệ với phái nữ.

Ví dụ
These friendship rules that makes up the sect is the essence (bản chất) of toxic masculinity. I am especially perturbed (quan ngại) by the so-called golden rule of the bro code; bros before hoes. First of all, I don’t think any sensible person would have much consideration for a precept that refers to women as ‘hoes’.

He got his start in the era (kỉ nguyên) of gangsta rap and admits to a ‘bros before hoes’ attitude (thái độ) early in his career. So how did the Chicagoan become one of conscious rap’s strongest voices?

Jason’s not a very likable character. You know the type. He’s selfish (ích kỉ), noncommittal, manipulative and lives by the “bros before hoes” mantra (thần chú).

"Say something in a roundabout way" nghĩa là gì?

Cứ thẳng thắn như này thì ai cũng mê nha. Photo by Designecologist from Pexels

"Say (something) in a roundabout (sort of) way" hoặc "roundabout way of saying" = nói một cách vòng vo -> giải thích lằng nhằng, không vào vấn đề.

Ví dụ
Then it is often found that foreign people have single words to denote things which we should have to say in a roundabout way. This is because the conditions (điều kiện) under which they live, or their customs (phong tục) and ways of thought...

Which is all a roundabout way of saying that I’m not very good at passive-aggression (gây hấn thụ động), as (for better or worse) my behavior generally tends towards the denominator (mẫu số), rather than the numerator (tử số), of the fractional (phân số) representation of the whole number that is my life.

It felt like a roundabout way to say something that’s already been said. We’re not experts, scientists or policy-makers (nhà hoạch định chính sách). The only thing I’m an expert in is being afraid. Having 157 young people come to talk about their fear is a bit weird, but it was a great day that had a lot of significance (ý nghĩa) for a lot of people.”
