"Batten down the hatches" nghĩa là gì?

"Batten down the hatches" = đóng chặt các cửa của tàu -> sẵn sàng chờ đợi điều xấu nhất, điều tệ nhất sắp xảy ra.

Ví dụ
Businesses are focused on survival - everyone's battening down the hatches.

Coronavirus is forcing China, Australia's largest dairy customer, to batten down the hatches but Freshagenda analyst Steve Spencer thinks there's little likelihood (khả năng xảy ra) farmgate milk prices will suffer.

“General Motors, Holden’s parent company, has been making its exit from right-hand-drive markets for a couple of years now, so there has been a global decision to batten down the hatches in case of another global financial meltdown (khủng hoảng), and there has also been a move towards electric vehicles in a big way – so simply put, it was just not viable (có thể làm được) to produce right hand drive vehicles for a small market like Australia,” he said.

"Measure your length" nghĩa là gì?

Ôi không... Photo by Guy Kawasaki from Pexels

"Measure one's length" = đo chiều dài -> ngã sõng soài

Ví dụ
Beside its course stand great tussocks of grass (bụi cỏ) over which you can trip and measure your length in the soaking peat (bãi than bùn), wet moss (rong rêu) and boulder-broken turf (mảng đất sỏi) strewn (rải) with lichened stones...

While a man walks on plain ground (đồng bằng), he falls not ; or, if he fall, he doth but measure his length on the ground, and rise again without harm: but he, that climbeth high (trèo cao), is in danger of falling; and, if he fall, of killing.

It goes for nothing, and considered no fall, should you be dislodged from your saddle (trật khỏi lưng ngựa), and measure your length in a ditch, however bruised (bầm tím), provided always that you keep fast hold of the bridle, and prevent your horse from getting away from you: thus you see how easy it is to escape the unpleasant dilemmas (tình huống khó xử) you may sometimes be thrown into.

"Cut the deadwood out" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut the deadwood out" = Cắt/cưa hết gỗ khô -> Loại bỏ/đào thải những người vô ích hoặc không đem lại giá trị nào.

Ví dụ
The City needs to come up with a way to cut the deadwood out of their organization. i.e. people who showup, read the paper, cruise the web all day and literally do nothing. They have people like that. That would save tons of money.

The two paragraphs are being seen as evidence of the farcical (khôi hài, lố bịch) nature of the so-called “free hand” given to him by the Congress Working Committee. Rahul is publicly admitting that he was unable to cut the deadwood out and that many were not willing to relinquish (từ bỏ, không làm) their positions in the party. His emphasis on “sacrifice” signals rigid (cứng nhắc, không linh hoạt) structures in the party that couldn’t be reformed easily.

"Measure swords" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by ginu plathottam from Pexels

"Measure swords" = đấu kiếm -> chiến đấu, chống lại ai hoặc cũng có nghĩa là hiểu tường tận về đối phương (khả năng, trong lĩnh vực cụ thể).

Ví dụ
He must go to the false tsar (Sa hoàng giả) and measure swords with him.

“He is afraid to measure swords with you,” she said, “but he will find some other way to be rid of you. He is cunning (xảo quyệt), oh, so cunning, and treacherous (kẻ phụ bạc, bội tín).”

Situated as I am, it is necessary, however, that I should say thus much to him, in answer to his vehement declamations (tuyên bố hùng hồn) against the India Board (Hội đồng), that when the proper day comes, I shall not be afraid to measure swords with him on that subject.

I shall not refuse, in compliance with the request (theo yêu cầu) of my correspondent (phóng viên báo chí), to give my animadversions (phê bình) on this subject 5 but as I am not inclined to measure swords on this occasion with any of my predecessors (người tiền nhiệm) or contemporaries (đương thời), I shall take a different course, and appear in the cause as an advocate for duelling.

"Dice with death" nghĩa là gì?

Thua mất rồi! Photo courtesy: Grim Photography

"Dice with death" = chơi súc sắc với tử thần -> ở trong trạng thái cực kỳ nguy hiểm.

Ví dụ
But every day hundreds of ordinary (bình thường) workers dice with death to complete these essential (thiết yếu) tasks.

His death reminds us that tomorrow is not promised to any of us. In our own country, we dice with death every day, given our lifestyles, state of our roads, etc. Bryant has gone the way of all flesh but his legacy as one of the greatest players to ever play the game of basketball will forever be illuminated (soi sáng).

The series of James Bond movies has featured its share of earth-shattering (chấn động) character deaths. Bond's wife Tracy in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Judi Dench's M in Skyfall and Jill Masterson's still golden frame in Goldfinger all linger (lưu lại) in the memory and prove that being a woman in Bond's life is an occupational hazard. Somewhat surprisingly, considering the constant peril (hiểm họa) the character is faced with, Bond himself has never faced the reaper (thần chết). Throughout 58 years of existence on the big screen, Bond has diced with death and always come up trumps (số đỏ). Even when the franchise's future was uncertain, even when an actor was due to be replaced, Bond always rides off into the sunset (mostly) unharmed.

"Cut the cord" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut the cord" = Cắt dây cáp -> Cắt mối quan hệ ràng buộc/ngột ngạt (thường là con cái với cha mẹ); không phụ thuộc vào ai/cái gì nữa và có thể tự lập được.

Ví dụ
I did get to see her a little bit and her dad got to cut the cord. But then they took her straight away. I didn't get to see her for about four hours. She was in an incubator (lồng nuôi trẻ em đẻ non, vườn ươm), with lots of wires monitoring her heart rate and a nasal tube in."

The thing is, my boyfriend is afraid to leave his parents. They pressure him to finish their unfinished projects and take advantage of him. It’s like he’s being punished, and not receiving any support. I can’t stand to visit his family home. How do I get him to understand it’s not his responsibility and that he should not feel guilty for leaving to begin living his own life? He needs to cut the cord!

Thousands of people have taken to Twitter to explain why they stopped supporting the Republican Party using the hashtag #ILeftTheGOP. The topic was among the top trends on Monday morning as users posted their reasons for leaving the party, with many placing the blame on President Donald Trump. The hashtag took off after columnist Cheri Jacobus tweeted that she left the party in 2016 as they nominated Trump and asked others to share when they "cut the cord."

"Nothing could be further from the truth" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Chalo Garcia on Unsplash

"Nothing could be further from the truth" = không có chút gì sự thật -> cụm từ này có ý nhấn mạnh rằng điều đang được thảo luận hoặc nói đến hoàn toàn không đúng, trái sự thật.

Ví dụ
“Biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people sound, to many people, academic and far removed from our daily lives… Nothing could be further from the truth—they are the bedrock (nền tảng) of our food, clean water and energy.”

There is often a dissonance (sự bất hòa) between economics and earth system science. While present economic frameworks see nature as an externality (trạng thái bên ngoài), nothing could be further from the truth. The global economy is embedded in Earth’s broader ecosystems and is dependent upon them.

Meantime, the stock is prone to (thiên về) speculation, which begets further speculation leaving traders to believe there is some upside potential at play. In the vast majority of cases, nothing could be further from the truth. What looks like upside potential rapidly translates into heavy losses.

"Cut the cheese" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut the cheese" = Cắt phó mát -> Đánh rắm (tiếng lóng).

Ví dụ
A show full of 'em; Swearengen, while leading a meeting in his office, shifts focus without missing a beat: “I wanna know who cut the cheese.

When I was a kid, our family would end the day by relaxing in front of the TV after dinner. Everyone would have a seat, take off their shoes and put up their feet. Before long, a strange and unsavory aroma (mùi khó chịu) invaded our noses. Sometimes our feet smelled so bad that my dad would joke, “Who cut the cheese?”

Rep. Eric Swalwell seemed to cut the cheese live on national TV ... but the cheese, as it turns out, was apparently a studio mug. The California congressman was doing an interview Monday on MSNBC's 'Hardball' with host Chris Matthews -- and while he was going on and on about Ukraine and alleged malfeasance (hành động phi pháp, hành động bất lương) by DT ... something that sounded like a loud, wet fart blasted through the airwaves. It certainly seemed like flatulence (sự đầy hơi, tính huênh hoang), and Rep. Swalwell even paused a moment right afterward in what many viewed as an acknowledgment of the ripped gas. And, of course, #fartgate and #shartgate soon started to trend everywhere on Twitter as a result.

"Measure the drapes" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by mentatdgt from Pexels

"Measure the drapes" = đo cái rèm -> lên kế hoạch/ âm mưu thay thế vị trí của ai (công việc, chính trị...).

Ví dụ
On the other side, the Sanders people have started measuring the drapes already. People supporting other candidates (ứng viên) are being told to get in line or get the hell out.

That time, the reception (tiếp nhận) seemed far less effusive, almost chilly. "The feeling just wasn't the same." Was he imagining things? No. It turned out that Machiavelli was figuratively (ẩn dụ) measuring the drapes in Hammond's office.

Okay, technically the real 44th U.S. president and first lady aren’t measuring the drapes for an art-vacation; instead the acclaimed (ca ngợi, hoan nghênh) “President Barack Obama”portrait by Kehinde Wiley and the “Michelle Obama” portrait by Amy Sherald will take up residence at the Houston museum March 25-May 30, 2022.

Politico uncorked (phơi bày) the latest left-wing conspiracy (âm mưu) in an article headlined: Democrats (Đảng Dân chủ) are already bracing for a ‘hostile’ (thù địch) Trump transition. They’re not measuring any drapes. But Democrats fear Trump and his aides won’t meet, share documents or otherwise cooperate in a handover of power.

Of course, countless pop stars over the years have used sexuality to their advantage (lợi thế), but Tove Lo is completely shameless about it in a way that nobody else can quite measure up to.

Track powerhouses (cường quốc) such as Great Britain, Australia and Germany will be favorites across several events. How will the U.S. team measure up? Both coaches and riders alike will have a better idea by the weekend.

Even if you’re a TV series purist (chủ nghĩa thuần túy) and you don’t believe a sequel (phần tiếp theo) can ever measure up to the original, put your regular Friday 8 p.m. to 9 9 p.m. viewing fare on pause and give this show a good look.

Mr Smith, thank you for the clarity (rõ ràng) which you bring to bear on your questions. I would like to know how I deal with a job interview question. "Cut some Z's" nghĩa là gì?

Zz zz zz. Photo by Sophia Kunkel

"Cut/get some Z's" = Đi ngủ (Z's là tượng trưng cho việc ngủ hoặc ngáy)

Ví dụ
Do you prefer to watch a little television before bed? Or maybe you like to drink a little glass of scotch right before you cut some Z’s? Well, whatever small action you take before bed it turns out it says a lot about your personality type.

My alarm goes off at 1:45 am every weekday and it can be brutal. Naps are everything! I usually try to take one after a workout and lunch, so don’t try to get in touch with me between 1 to 3 in the afternoon. Ha! I turn my phone on silent, close my blackout curtains, and cut some z’s. I don’t set an alarm unless I have an event to attend or emcee (chủ trì) that evening.

The holidays are fast approaching and you might be be a fan of his soothing Christmas album, but sadly that's not his cup of tea to get a good night's sleep. Fellow insomnias (chứng mất ngủ) are likely familiar with same sleep app that the iconic Canadian singer uses to get some z's. In a surprising and hilarious twist, Michael Bublé falls asleep to Matthew McConaughey's voice every night.

"Home truth" nghĩa là gì?

"Home truth" nghĩa là sự thật không vui nhưng lại đúng về tính cách hoặc tình trạng của một người.

Ví dụ
Having authenticity and remaining resilient (kiên cường) is another home truth he reflects on. “Ideally by this stage, we would have liked to have employed one more person, but we just don’t have the funds to do it”

This newly restored British domestic drama from 1952 – adapted from the play by Wynyard Browne – is set amid the austere (mộc mạc, chân phương) atmosphere of post-war Britain and focuses on a family gathering over Christmas, with some of the characters facing up to a bit of home truth.

The shift towards Macau suggests the Chinese leadership is coming to terms with a home truth: International businesses have historically liked Hong Kong because it is different from the rest of China. The fact that the courts in Hong Kong feel a lot like English courts, and that websites can be freely accessed, and that companies can be incorporated without dealing with excessive red tape, and that citizens of most countries in the world can enter without visas, and that SIM cards can be bought without needing to show ID, and that foreign residents do not need to go register with the police when they move to a new apartment, and that churches are not controlled by government authorities, all matter.

"Cut off from the outside world" = Tách khỏi thế giới bên ngoài -> Cô lập, tách khỏi nhóm/cộng đồng nào đó; không liên quan hay dính dáng với bên ngoài, không tương tác và qua lại với bên ngoài.

Ví dụ

Hubei and its capital, Wuhan, remain virtually cut off from the outside world but factories, businesses and construction sites are slowly reopening in the rest of China after an extended Lunar New Year holiday.

Toronto Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa says the woman’s condition had been “improving and resolving for a couple of weeks now,” after she travelled to Wuhan and the Hubei province of China in January, prior to the region being cut off from the outside world on Jan. 23.

"They all like the cut of your jib Eamon, who do you fancy yourself there on the stage?" Claire Byrne asks Green Party leader Eamon Ryan who he would consider going into government with #cblive #GE2020.

Only three weeks ago, I wrote, there's something about Naomi, and the EU elections have certainly proved that. Naomi Long is a tenacious advocate for liberalism (chủ nghĩa tự do) and the middle ground. Northern Ireland voters seem to like the cut of her jib.

Landed her first "real" job at KIFI Local News 8, reporting from the cutthroat metropolis of Pocatello. That's when she was like, "Hey, southeast Idaho, I'm liking the cut of your jib," and that was that. She fell in love with the region and nobody has ever been able to get rid of her, despite their best efforts.

"Cut it fine" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut it fine" = Làm điều gì với chêch lệch sát nút/khoảng cách giữa đúng với sai rất mong manh; sát giờ.

Ví dụ
Figures released by HM Revenue & Customs show that 11.1 million taxpayers filed their 2018/19 returns ahead of the 31 January 2020 deadline, with over 90% doing so online. Many cut it fine, with over 700,000 submitting on deadline day and over 26,000 filing in the final hour before the 11.59pm cutoff.

And, as you can tell, this was no place to be to feel good about life. Interestingly, her anger was directed largely at herself, for cutting her timings so fine. Which resonated, as I so often see people taking delight in cutting it fine when an important deadline is looming, and I just don’t get it.

If you've cut it fine, this is a stressful situation as you could be left without a gift for a loved one. If the seller hasn't delivered your parcel within the agreed time frame agreed, you have a right to your money back in full. It you didn't agree a time frame, it has 30 days to deliver before you can complain.

"Cut each other's throats" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut each other's throats" = Cắt cổ họng/bóp cổ/chặn họng nhau -> Hai hoặc nhiều nhóm người cãi vã, tranh chấp hoặc dẫn đến xung đột rất kịch liệt và hung hãn với nhau.

Ví dụ
"The interesting thing about asset management is that although we compete with each other, it is not like investment banking where they are trying to cut each other's throats.

“We’re still top of the league and other teams in the division were probably hoping we’d cut each other’s throats and let them close the gap but there were two quality teams out there today.”

In the meanwhile Loeffler and Collins are learning new ways to cut each other’s throats. The long knives are out. Loeffler is a transplant from Illinois, married into money and also ran a successful business. She and Collins both play up their roots, which include being poor and working the soil. But more importantly, at least in their minds, is the daily sycophancy (thói nịnh hót, thói bợ đỡ) and homage (sự tôn kính, tôn trọng) they pay to Trump.

"Cut class" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut class" = Cố tình cúp học để đi chơi hoặc làm việc riêng; cúp tiết không xin phép.

Ví dụ
The app, called SpotterEDU, was developed by former Mizzou basketball coach Rick Carter and uses the campus’ Wi-Fi networks and short-range phone sensors to ensure students don’t cut class.

Daniel Meggs’ sister, Brittany Rauch, laughed Tuesday as she described the time her little brother called her at college and persuaded her to call Butler High so he could cut class. Jordan Meggs’ sister, Kristi Miller, verbalized (diễn đạt bằng lời, nói dài dòng) the struggle to make sense of the why: Why Daniel died so young and why he will never meet his son.

Most important, have a conversation about peer pressure and personal responsibilities. Hopefully, you have already had the don’t-drink-or-do-drugs talk, but revisiting the discussion about avoiding mischievous (có hại, tinh quái) activities in general can give teens the right mindset (tư tưởng đứng đắn) with which to take on this chapter. When a group of kids decides to take a long lunch, it is tempting for even the best-behaved to cut class. There is power in numbers, and a careless attitude can easily kick in when part of a group. A major school violation, however, can put one’s college admittance in jeopardy (lâm vào cảnh nguy hiểm, lâm nguy).

"Cut adrift" = trôi lênh đênh, thả tự do.

Ví dụ
Flick took over as Bayern's interim coach in November with the defending Bundesliga champions in danger of being cut adrift in the title race.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been “cut adrift” from the royal family. The 35-year-old prince and Duchess Meghan, 38, will formally step down as senior royals from March 31 and now, a former royal protection officer has claimed that their future is uncertain. Ken Wharfe told The Sun newspaper: “They have been cut adrift. Where is their future now? I think it’ll be difficult for them to find a way back in the royal family.”

Until they made contact, I’d not previously heard of the London based Alt-Folk trio (and sometimes more) The Greeners, but this unforgettable single is sure to change that for many. From the very opening of their new single ‘Old Street’, it’s clear that they are far from typical. From the deep resonance of Gus Seymour’s cello, the listener is cut adrift and then lifted by the exceptional vocals of Sonya Cullingford as they revisit home.

"Pitched battle" nghĩa là gì?

"Pitched battle" = ẩu đả trên đường pitch -> nghĩa là đánh nhau dữ dỗi giữa cổ động viên hai đội sau khi trận đấu kết thúc.

Ví dụ
A pitched battle was taking place between champions of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and its opponents (đối thủ). On Monday, a constable (cảnh sát ở cấp thấp nhất) and a civilian were killed in northeast Delhi, the site of the clashes, and 37 other cops were injured.

But the movie about two soldiers crossing no-man's-land -- filmed to appear like one continuous shot -- could find itself in a pitched battle with a movie determined (xác định) to make history of its own.

The story shifts (thay đổi) dramatically (đột ngột) as it enters the second act, and a trek through the wilderness soon turns into a pitched battle for survival as the travelers are attacked by what looks like a massive underground worm-monster.

"Running battle" -> nghĩa là cuộc chiến hoặc cuộc tranh luận dài lan man.

Ví dụ
Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar continued a running battle that has built over several debates, while Biden lit into Bloomberg over Obamacare and Sanders faced questions about his policy (chính sách) disagreements (bất đồng) with a powerful Nevada labor union.

Stoke midfielder James McClean hit out at Preston counterpart (bản sao) Ben Pearson on social media on Wednesday night, calling his opponent a 'b****'. The pair were engaged in a running battle during Preston's 2-0 away victory at the bet365 Stadium, and it appears there is little love lost between the pair.

"Cut a deal" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut a deal" nghĩa là đạt được một thỏa thuận; đàm phán/sắp xếp một vụ thỏa thuận.

Ví dụ
Sellers listing in the off-season may be moremotivated to cut a deal, especially if they'rerelocating for a job and are looking to sell ASAP.

Mitchell is the only Attorney General in US history to have served a prison term, a fate he suffered when he refused to cut any deals with those investigating the Watergate scandal. Mitchell also refused to write a memoir out of that same sense of loyalty.

“Michael is a good friend of mine, we’re partners in Australia (Supercars), and I knew he was talking to Ruoff Mortgage,” said Brown, who also had a personal services deal with Alonso that ended earlier this year. “But when he and Fernando couldn’t put a deal together, Ruoff asked Michael if they could go with us, and he gave his blessing. So we cut a deal with Ruoff to sponsor Fernando at Indianapolis.”

Balanche reckons that despite all the hawkish rhetoric (lời nói khoa trương hiếu chiến), the two sides will eventually agree. A putative (được giả định là, được coi là) deal might include Russia letting Turkish forces take the Kurdish-controlled town of Kobani and move people displaced from Idlib there, Arabizing Kobani as was done in Afrin, the Kurdish-majority enclave (vùng đất bị bao quanh bởi nhiều vùng đất khác) Turkey invaded in early 2018. “All depends on whether the Kurds cut a deal with regime (chế độ) and tell the Americans to go or not,” Balanche noted.

#clintoncash

"Cut down to" nghĩa là gì?

"Cut (something) down to (something)" = Cắt/giảm nhỏ lại cho dễ dùng/quản lý.

Ví dụ
“I had to curl each bit of paper individually, I had to cut them down to size, I had to shape them the way I wanted it, I had to make sure they glued properly,” April said.

The Jaguars (11-8) went up 31-16 midway through the second quarter and Andover started to make some noise. Jonas who finished with 33 points, hit a three from the top of the right side, cutting it down to 12.

In contrast, implementing AI technology requires a different approach altogether. AI requires that you look at a problem and see if there’s a way to solve it by reframing the business process itself. Instead of solving a problem with a 10-step strategy, is there a way to cut it down to six steps using data already available or by using new types of untapped internal or publicly available data and applying AI to it? A study by IDC last year found that 60% of organizations reported changes in their business model that were associated with AI adoption.
