Meghan and Harry insist Queen Elizabeth doesn’t own the word ‘royal’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle laid bare their hostility (thẳng thừng để lộ sự thù hận/thù địch) with Buckingham Palace — by insisting (khăng khăng/nhất quyết) that neither Queen Elizabeth nor the UK Government owns the word “royal” internationally (trên bình diện quốc tế).

Hours after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed on Friday they would not go ahead with their planned “Sussex Royal” brand after The Queen put a stop to it, they posted an extraordinary statement (thông cáo báo chí bổ sung) on their website insisting they still had the right to the word “royal.”

The statement reads: “While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when the transition occurs Spring 2020.”

There is a truth universally acknowledged (sự thật được thừa nhận rộng rãi) by drivers (lái xe) in India: honk your horn loud enough and the traffic lights will surely change to green.

But, fed up of impatient (không kiên nhẫn) drivers inflicting (nện, giáng (một đòn); gây ra (vết thương); bắt phải chịu (sự trừng phạt, thuế, sự tổn thương...)) a deafening roar (tiếng còi điếc tai) every time they are forced to stop, police in Mumbai have come up with a new system to punish (trừng phạt) those who cannot wait at traffic lights in silence.

The new system, said the police, was quite simple: “Honk more, wait more.” (càng còi càng đợi)

Known as “the punishing signal”, Mumbai police installed a rigged traffic light system to tackle the problem of “reckless honkers”, which resets the red traffic signal every time the sound of car horns goes above 85 decibels. For particularly honk-happy drivers, it could mean a very long wait at the lights.

Dylan Vinzant, a 38-year-old graduate of Willamette University College of Law who was admitted to practice in Oregon in 2017, was at the Sunset Strip Gentleman’s Club in Portland on Friday when he asked for a private, 15-minute dance but then skipped out on his bill,

...once police caught Vinzant on the other side of the train tunnel, he informed them that he was a lawyer. He was arrested and booked in the Washington County Jail for theft and trespassing.

-----

In step 1, because electricity is seen as a right, subsidies (trợ cấp), theft (trộm cắp), and nonpayment (không trả tiền) are widely tolerated (được dung thứ/bỏ qua trên diện rộng). Bills that do not cover costs, unpaid bills, and illegal grid connections (câu/móc trộm điện) become an accepted part of the system (là một phần chấp nhận của hệ thống).

In step 2, electricity utilities—also known as distribution companies (công ty phân phối/truyền tải điện)—lose money with each unit of electricity sold and in total lose large sums of money. Though governments provide support, at some point, budget constraints (giới hạn ngân sách) start to bind.

In step 3, distribution companies have no option but to ration (phân phối, chia khẩu phần) supply by limiting access (hạn chế tiếp cận) and restricting hours of supply (giới hạn số giờ cấp điện). In effect, distribution companies try to sell less of their product.

In step 4, power supply (cung cấp điện) is no longer governed by market forces (không  vận hành theo các yếu tố thị trường). The link between payment and supply has been severed (mối liên hệ giữa chi trả và cung cấp đã bị tách rời): those evading payment receive the same quality of supply as those who pay in full. The delinking of payment and supply reinforces the view described in step 1 that electricity is a right [and leads to] a low-quality, low-payment equilibrium.

"Punch in" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Adrianna Calvo from Pexels

"Punch in" hoặc "punch into" = đấm vào -> ký tá giấy tờ, chấm công/đóng đinh/ nhập dữ liệu bằng máy tính (ấn bàn phím). "Punch something in" là đánh đấm cái gì, làm vỡ, nghiền nát cái gì.

Ví dụ
With Quick Call on Android 10, you can punch in the phone number on your computer using your Chrome browser (trình duyệt) and call from your Android device.

"I follow the steps to try and get my money back," said Dougharty. "Then she told me to punch in a three-digit code." The woman guided him in setting up Apple Pay and told him to enter a PIN of 6-4-9.

Entering with a chain around his neck, Reigns locked the door behind him to the dismay (mất tinh thần) of Corbin, who attacked him from behind. Corbin reversed (xoay ngược) a Superman punch into the Deep Six for a near fall and reached into Reigns's pocket to grab the padlock (khóa móc) key, unchaining the door.

It's these tiny details which help to pack an emotional punch into the show, as you see the small remnants (tàn dư) of a sadly doomed relationship. There's also plenty of drinking involved, whether that be a casual sip of wine (ngụm rượu) or Jamie downing a full glass in two moments of heightened emotion (cảm xúc dâng trào).

Đi làm sớm quá ngồi nhìn đồng hồ cho đỡ chán hả? Photo by Oladimeji Ajegbile from Pexels

"Punch the (time) clock" = ấn đồng hồ -> ghi lại thời gian đi làm và tan làm của nhân viên (chấm công).

He recognizes (nhận ra) the value of work. “In America, we want people to work... to set the alarm clock and punch the time clock. That’s what America’s all about.”

Fortune has for the past 23 years highlighted (nhấn mạnh) the companies it deems (xem là) most worthy to punch a clock, and its 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2020 has several retailers making the grade.

For years, workers at the Holden factory would punch a time clock at the start of their shift (ca làm việc). Now one of those businesses is dying and the other is making an extraordinary (phi thường) comeback.

Hence my brilliant idea for the workplace cone (trụ cảnh báo hình nón), just like the one the veterinarian (bác sĩ thú y) makes your dog wear to prevent it from licking itself. Really, wearing one should be compulsory (bắt buộc) the moment you punch the clock.

The American star told WNSP Sports Radio 105.5 FM in 2017: "Early in my career (sự nghiệp), I got dropped. I got a rabbit punch in the back of the neck."

Wilder was furious (tức giận) with the referee (trọng tài) for, as he saw it, allowing Fury to land more rabbit punches (to the back of the head) despite warning (cảnh cáo) that he’d punish any fighter who did so.

Bayless had come in my dressing room, looked me in my eyes and said if I hit Fury in the back of the head - rabbit punch - or hit off of the break, he would disqualify (truất quyền thi đấu) me or deduct two points from me.

Hitchins superior speed (tốc độ vượt trội) and footwork (động tác chân) enabled him to move back and forth and side to side with ease as he peppered DeLomba's face. DeLomba was warned early in the 7th for throwing rabbit punches by referee Russell Mora.

Punch-up in Turkish parliament (quốc hội): Dozens of parliamentarians joined the brawl (cãi lộn), some climbing desks or throwing punches (vung nắm đấm), while others tried to stop the fighting, according to video footage of the incident.

In Italy there’s a supermarket punch-up as shoppers fight over the last packet of pasta (gói mì ống). In Hong Kong, two men are arrested (bị bắt) for a “toilet paper heist” (yes, really), stealing 600 rolls of toilet paper that were left outside a supermarket.

"Telegraph his punches" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Sabel Blanco from Pexels

"Telegraph one's punches" có từ "telegraph" nghĩa là ra hiệu. Cụm từ này có nghĩa là vô tình đưa ra thông tin, báo cho bạn biết về sự tấn công, kế hoạch hoặc bước tiếp theo của ai.

Ví dụ
The importance of this was that it taught him not to telegraph his punches.

Most lyric writers (tác giả viết lời) telegraph their punches, especially when plowing over well-turned (khéo léo) fields for the first time. But hey, it's all good.

I remembered Tank telling us a boxer could bet a big nonboxer anytime because the non-boxer would always telegraph his punches. Rowland started jabbing (thọc, đâm) Kelly in the face and ducking (dìm xuống) each time Kelly throw a punch at him.

Ehlick seemed to telegraph his punches and kicks and Franco made the most of it, winning his first point on a counter punch (cú đấm phản đòn) and the second again with a counter punch. Had Ehlick kept his moves a "secret," he might have fared better.

"Punch buggy" là một trò chơi xem ai đấm đầu tiên, và phải hô "punch buggy" trong lúc đấm. "Buggy" lấy từ từ "bug" nghĩa là "lỗi".

Ví dụ
Cohen appears at the 1:03 mark, on the receiving end of a “punch buggy”—the old road trip game that calls for a punch on the arm upon spotting a Beetle (xe ô tô). The Bravo personality will co-host (đồng tổ chức) CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage.

At one time, the Volkswagen Beetle was so ubiquitous (phổ biến) that its sighting (tầm nhìn) is often punctuated by a swift (nhanh) punch in the arm and a shout of "Punch Buggy!" (Or "Slug Bug!" depending on your regional (khu vực) take on the road trip game).

In lieu of (thay vì) wedding favors, the newlyweds (vợ chồng mới cưới) made a donation (quyên góp) to homeless pets on behalf of their guests. They decorated the reception (tiệc chiêu đãi) with Volkswagen Beetle toy cars because they still play the “punch buggy” game in the car, served a decadent barbecue (tiệc thịt nướng) spread from Sweet Lucy’s Smokehouse for dinner...

Foldit is an online computer puzzle game developed by the University of Washington's Center for Game Science and Department of Biochemistry, meant to crowdsource (hình thức tạo ra sản phẩm, thu thập thông tin hoặc ý kiến từ một nhóm người đông đảo gửi dữ liệu của mình qua Internet, mạng xã hội hoặc ứng dụng điện thoại thông minh) many people's attempts to solve puzzles about protein folding in specific diseases.

Clarke himself is delighted to be extending his career with Gloucester Rugby and helping the team to achieve further success. “I’m very happy to be staying. Since I arrived back in 2016, I’ve loved every minute of my time here. Training and playing week in, week out with world-class players has helped me to improve so much as a player and I feel that I’m still getting better. “But, while I’m pleased to be progressing as an individual, the most important thing is how I contribute to the overall squad effort. I genuinely feel that we’re going places as a group and I hope to play my part in helping Gloucester Rugby to achieve success in the not too distant future.”

Reigns ultimately took full control of the match (kiểm soát hoàn toàn trận đấu) with a series of punches before wrapping the steel chain (dây xích thép) that he wore around his neck (as he walked to the ring) around his fist, and Superman punched the lights out of Corbin for the three-count.

The film has a distinct socialist (chủ nghĩa xã hội) undertone (ẩn ý), one that Keady says he can’t help. Black Alice’s aggressive personal philosophy (triết lý) of “peace or I’ll punch your lights out” is one that is gradually gaining favour amongst the general public, as more people become aware of the ills of the capitalist society (xã hội tư bản) we live in.

When they encounter (tình cờ gặp gỡ) each other, Blade is less than enthused to see him, saying "@#$%. Wade." All of a sudden, the first punch was swung at my face and took me by surprise. When I was still shocked by the first hit, the guy delivered the second sucker punch. By then, a few passers-by (người qua đường) had stopped and one of them tried to reason with them that four on one was not fair.

"Pull no punches " nghĩa là gì?

Tôi sẽ không nhượng bộ đâu! Photo by Prince Photos from Pexels

"Pull no punches" có từ "pull" là kéo và "punch" là cú đấm. Thành ngữ này xuất xứ từ giới đánh võ quyền Anh. Khi một võ sĩ giữ quả đấm của anh ta lại thì điều đó có nghĩa là anh ta chỉ đấm nhẹ thôi. Nhưng khi anh ta không giữ tay lại mà đấm hết sức mình thì người Mỹ gọi đó là "pull no punches" -> hành động không kiềm chế, không giới hạn.

Ví dụ
Towards the end viewers see Superior Court Judge George G. Lomeli pull no punches when sentencing (kết án) Pearl Fernandez and Isauro Aguirre to life in prison without parole (tạm tha) and death respectively.
