"Be wrapped up in" nghĩa là gì?

Dù nắng hay mưa, đam mê luôn mang lại nguồn động lực rất lớn. Photo by RUN 4 FFWPU from Pexels

"Be wrapped up in somebody/something" = bọc trong, quấn trong -> bận tâm, mải mê, thiết tha với/ bị cuốn vào, bao trùm trong (màn bí mật...). "Wrap-up" nghĩa là kết thúc, hoành thành.

Ví dụ
Has it been scary at certain points? Yes, but also I try not to get wrapped up in that. I try to think, What is the next thing I can do to be helpful?

Essentially (về cơ bản) it's like a detective puzzle (giải đố trinh thám) game wrapped up in a 90s sitcom, and it's endlessly entertaining (giải trí vô tận).

Alex Rodriguez, who was wrapped up in a cheating scandal (bê bối gian lận) of his own back in 2013-14, acknowledged on ESPN during a spring training telecast (chương trình truyền hình) that he handled his situation poorly.

For as long as I have been involved, it’s always been the case that the person and the people are more important than sport. Sometimes you can get wrapped up in sport and think it’s the be all and end all, but I’m very lucky to have been involved in a place that’s like Dublin, in Melbourne, where their biggest concern was the individuals (cá nhân).

"Get in one" nghĩa là gì?

"Get (something) in one" = Đoán/giải mã chính xác và đúng ngay từ lần đầu/ngay lập tức.

Ví dụ
Now, you can probably guess what a couple of precocious (sớm biết), football-mad 10-year-olds were like when surrounded by Premier League footballers. If you’ve looked down at your bingo card and pre-emptively ticked off ‘little shits’, well done, you’ve got it in one. With the benefit of hindsight (thước ngắm, sự nhận thức muộn), the club won’t have chosen the hotel intending for their squad members to be pestered (quấy rầy, làm phiền) at every opportunity, but sometimes them’s the breaks.

“I don’t remember how many takes it took but I do know that we never got it in one go!” Lee chuckles. “We’d set out to get it in one 10-minute go, but again, our ideas were more solid than our ability to play them! So we settled for doing it in four pieces. We divided it into four, focused on those and then used the good old magic of editing tape to stick them together into one cohesive (dính kết) piece. Those were the days before click tracks and that digital, metronomic attitude towards putting music together. So it was very much down to how you felt in the moment. Sometimes you’d get excited and you’d speed up, and sometimes that’s the way it should be. That’s why it feels so live.”

"That's/ it's a wrap" có từ "wrap" nghĩa là gói, bọc -> gói gọn lại, kết luận lại, kết thúc, hoàn thành.

Ví dụ
"A lot of heavyweights (đối thủ hạng nặng) can only get you in one to six rounds. If they don't get you early, then that's a wrap for them," he continued.

It’s a wrap for the sixth edition of Reykjavík’s Stockfish Film Festival, one of the few live film gatherings that managed to survive the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (đại dịch).

It’s almost a wrap for Virginia lawmakers (nhà lập pháp) at the state Capitol. The 2020 General Assembly session adjourned (rời lại) over the weekend, but not before several new bills (dự luật) made their way to Governor Ralph Northam's desk.

That's a wrap for The Mandalorian Season 2 ... at least for Gina Carano. The Cara Dune actress announced (tuyên bố) the end to her Mandalorian filming schedule (lịch trình quay phim) on Friday, March 6, 2020. She shared two posts and one of them got fans worried that maybe she was saying goodbye forever and not just for the season.

"Wrap (something) up" = gói/bọc nó lại -> kết thúc, hoàn thành, hoàn thiện (nhiệm vụ, công việc...), nghĩa khác là kêu ai im lặng, trật tự đi. Tiếng lóng nghĩa là đeo bao cao su (trước khi quan hệ).

Ví dụ
“We found ourselves locked into this terrible situation, unable to wrap it up, and handing it off to an administration (chính quyền) that was going to handle it even worse than we did,” Stephen Pomper, a former special assistant (trợ lý) to President Barack Obama, told “The Weekly.”

Phillip came out (công khai) as gay last month in an emotional interview with Holly. But he took the joke in his stride (dáng đi) and burst out laughing alongside his co-host. He then threw a jibe (bình luận xúc phạm, nói mỉa) back, as after he heard a producer (nhà sản xuất) telling the host to wrap it up, Phillip said: "We've got your talkback - can you please wrap up!"

“Sex is a great way to relieve potential anxiety (căng thẳng), so the combination of physical proximity (gần gũi thể xác) to one’s partner for any extended period would lead to more intimacy (thân mật), especially early on in this type of unfamiliar environment,” clinical sex therapist (bác sĩ trị liệu) Dr. Ian Kerner added in the press release, echoing (đáp lại) Dr. Oz’s suggestion last week that “the best solution if you’re holed up with your significant other, quarantined (cách ly), is have sex.” So if you’re going to take Oz’s advice to heart, just make sure to wrap it up first.

"Wrap car around" nghĩa là gì?

Cẩn thận tầm nhìn khi lái xe nhé. Photo by David Youhas

"Wrap (one's) car around (something)" nghĩa là đâm xe vào (cột đèn, cột điện, cây...) khiến xe bị "gập" lại hoặc bao phủ ("wrap") vật đâm phải.

Ví dụ
If you wrap my car around a tree, I'll do more than say 'I told you so'.

That bottle waiting in her car? She'll try to empty most of it on her way back home. That means jail (vào tù) if she gets stopped by the law tonight. Or worse – she'll wrap her car around a tree.'

That's right, people will actually look at an object, the car they're about to rear-end (chụng phần đuôi xe), or the tree they're about to wrap their car around, and not see it. And yet, we persist (cố chấp) in driving and talking on the phone.

In this circumstance (trường hợp), the worst possible thing you can do is rent a car and drive to a meeting where you have to impress people with your mental acuity (trí tuệ sắc sảo) at the equivalent of 3 or 4 in the morning. You might not even make the meeting, because you very easily could wrap your car around a tree.

'Waltz off with something' = lấy trộm thứ gì nhanh chóng; đoạt được cái gì một cách dễ dàng.

Ví dụ
Dancers hope to waltz off with top prize in CommunitEE Chest giveaway.

She added: “Celebs: in case your professional simply gained the present, the Strictly curse could waltz off with your goals earlier than you’ve even acquired going.”

Jake Carter is 15/8 second favourite to waltz off with the top prize, while comic Deirdre O’Kane – who left telly viewers in tears with her Dolores O’Riordan tribute last night – is the outsider at 9/2.

Ex-Emmerdale star Kelvin has been the long-time favourite to waltz off with the title, but he now has another soap star (ngôi sao chương trình nhiều tập) hot on his heels after EasterEnder Emma closed the gap before the 14th and final week of dances.

-----

...In the end, the biggest barrier (rào cản lớn nhất) to the toilet revolution (cuộc cách mạng) is probably (có lẽ) not distance but cultural mores (tục lệ/tập tục văn hóa). The Japanese, Strang says, highly prize bathing, hygiene (vệ sinh) and cleanliness (sạch sẽ). When I was in Tokyo and Sapporo, it was common to see Japanese people wearing masks (đeo khẩu trang) to prevent (ngăn chặn, ngăn cản) the spread of germs (lây lan vi trùng). When you go out to dinner there, you're often given a hot, moist towel (khăn ướt nóng) or wet wipe so your hands are clean before you eat. The streets and subways are spotless (không có đốm, không một vết nhơ; sạch sẽ, tinh tươm), and hand-sanitizing (sát khuẩn tay) dispensers (nhà bào chế, người pha chế thuốc theo đơn; lọ xịt) are everywhere. It felt much different from back home.

For the last five years, Strang says, Toto has been featuring its technological innovations at the Consumer Electronics Show, and they've made a splash. The company showcased products such as its glistening Neorest NX2 dual flush toilet. It's got the standard bidet, a dryer and a heated seat with temperature control. But it also has a "tornado flush system," a "bacteria-neutralizing ultraviolet light," a "titanium dioxide-fired toilet bowl," a remote control, a toilet seat that automatically opens and closes and an air deodorizer. It costs $17,300. Other Toto toilets and seats cost much less, but the lofty price of Japanese-style toilets are another reason that they might not be catching on.

"Get my pulse racing" nghĩa là gì?

Cảm giác thật là chill. Photo by Tim Gouw

"Get (one's) pulse racing" = Mạch đập nhanh -> Làm ai phấn khích, thích thú và vui vẻ.

Ví dụ
Recently, I came close to three more grizzlies, but this time they were behind a chain link fence in the Big Bear Alpine Zoo. It was a lot safer all around, and the experience didn’t get my pulse racing like before.

There are many things I’m thankful for this week, not the least of which is the opportunity to write about a sport I love so dearly. There’s something about the first Saturday of May and the Kentucky Derby and the two days of the Breeders’ Cup that get my pulse racing.

Kia Motors revealed its new electric concept car, called Imagine by Kia, in Geneva, promising a car that will “get your pulse racing.” Think of the car as Kia showing how it wants to continue down the EV path beyond, say, the Soul EV. “Automotive design is about capturing the heart and making it beat that bit faster for that bit longer,” says Gregory Guillaume, Kia Motors Europe vice president of design. “We believe that there’s absolutely no reason why that should change simply because the car is electric.”

"Get you out of" nghĩa là gì?

"Get (someone) out of (something or somewhere)" = Cứu/giải thoát được ai khỏi vấn đề rắc rối hoặc ra khỏi được nơi nào.

Ví dụ
A Hollywood fixer to the rich and famous, Ray Donovan (Liev Schreiber) is the man who can get you out of any sticky situation, just not strictly legally. But of course, he also has his own problems to make disappear.

“She was pre-diabetes, and her diabetes (bệnh tiểu đường) came up full force, and we had to get her out of the country. We went down to the Dominican Republic. A missionary there helped us get Katie to a hospital,” said Aaron.

One wrote: "Ian’s so shady.... Money and getting rid of Kayden ain’t gonna get him out of this one! When Queen Sharon finds out there will be hell to pay." Another fumed: "I can not believe Ian is trying to get Karen to move from the square, he’s got a nerve. "A third reasoned: "Ian can't expect Karen to up and leave, she has family and her job there so why doesn't he just pay for Sharon to leave and go see Michelle or someone after Denny's funeral (đám tang)?"

Ví dụ

The best thing about the movie is Vinny's spitfire (nóng bỏng) auto-expert fiancée Mona Lisa Vito (Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei), who wanders around taking touristy photos on a pink polaroid camera wearing an itty bitty black miniskirt, matching leather jacket, and oversized sunglasses that would make The Fame-era Lady Gaga drool.

Ana stunned in her itty-bitty two-piece that left plenty of her perfectly bronzed figure on display. The swimwear included an impossibly tiny, bandeau style top in a white-and-gray zebra print pattern.

"Wrap up in cotton wool" nghĩa là gì?

Bảo vệ trẻ là đúng, nhưng đừng ngại để trẻ chơi đùa. Photo by Sharon McCutcheon from Pexels

"Wrap (one) up in cotton wool" có từ "cotton wool" là loại bông mộc, bông xơ (để làm cốt áo, làm nệm...). Cụm từ có nghĩa bao bọc quá mức, bảo vệ quá mức, chiều chuộng quá.

Ví dụ
I contacted them about the drinking. But I was basically told ‘don’t smother (ngộp thở) your son’ and ‘don’t wrap him up in cotton wool’.

Your natural instinct (bản năng tự nhiên) is to want to protect them in any way possible and if you could wrap them up in cotton wool to keep them safe, you would.

The shepherdess (cô gái chăn cừu), 33, who lives on a 100-acre farm near Otterburn, Northumberland, said: ‘I should wrap her up in cotton wool after she sold for that. You hope for a good fee but it was still a surprise (bất ngờ).'

The most important part of your business is the customer (khách hàng) and keeping the customer happy. Without them you have nothing, so we like to wrap them up with cotton wool. We’ve gone back to how gentleman’s boutiques (cửa hàng thời trang) used to be.

"Stop on a dime" nghĩa là gì?

Xịn chưa! Photo courtesy: Randy Kashka

"Stop on a dime" = dừng ngay một hào -> dừng bất chợt hoặc ngay lập tức mặc dù đang di chuyển rất nhanh. Câu nói bắt nguồn từ việc xe hơi có thể dừng ngay lập tức trong vòng một "dime" (= 18mm) khi đạp phanh.

Ví dụ
He’s been a salesman for 30 years and yet he just stopped on a dime and became a farmer.

There’s a sense of urgency (thôi thúc) to figure this thing out, and the NCAA is working on it. Apsey is heartbroken for Boise State’s winter sports athletes who saw things stop on a dime—and for the seniors who saw their careers suddenly end. He likened (so sánh, ví như) it to the football team’s experience when the First Responder Bowl was canceled during the first quarter in December 2018.

Furthermore, Disney is pausing production on its live-action Little Mermaid and Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Putting each of these blockbusters on hold is estimated to cost the House of Mouse between $300,000 and $350,000 a day. That’s over $2 million per week for every wide-release tentpole (phim “đình đám” chủ yếu nhằm gặt hái doanh thu cho các hãng phim). As one exec told THR, “It’s not like you can stop on a dime. You need to keep department heads going and maybe a level down from there through the hiatus (gián đoạn, đứt quãng).”

"Stink/smell to high heaven" = thối/bốc mùi lên đến cả trời -> rất tệ hoặc mang tiếng xấu.

Ví dụ
I can’t believe we’re doing this, the whole thing stinks to high heaven.

One can truthfully say that even the Parliamentary debates stank to high heaven in the past few weeks thanks to Ranjan Ramanayake’ antics (trò hề). We Sri Lankans must be mad to spend so much of national wealth to hear such inanities (lời nói vớ vẩn, vô nghĩa) and bring shame on those persons who decorated our Parliament in the past and set decent standards not second to the mother of Parliaments. The illustrious (nổi tiếng) persons of the past who were universally accepted as luminaries (danh nhân) are remembered fondly with gratitude.

"If the president is being accused of withholding (giữ lại) foreign aid, and his argument is, 'Well, we were studying corruption (tham nhũng), and we wanted to know about corruption in Ukraine,' and I think the Biden's are as corrupt as the day is long," Paul said. "Hotter than a hooker's doorknob on nickel night" nghĩa là gì?

Úi cẩn thận bỏng lưng chị gì ơi! Photo by Leon Martinez from Pexels

"Hotter than a hooker's doorknob on nickel night" = nóng hơn cả tay nắm cửa đêm nickel -> rất nóng. "Nickel night" chỉ sự kiện đồng giá 5 xu vào buổi tối (ở Mỹ 5 xu = 1 nikel), như đêm hội bia 5 xu chẳng hạn. Cụm từ tương tự "hotter than a whore house on nickel night".

Ví dụ
Do you think she’s hotter than a hooker’s doorknob on nickel night?

I enjoyed this beach more last night. I'm not sure if that's because it was void of all the current distractions (sao lãng) or if Beau's company simply made it more appealing (hấp dẫn). I suspect both. Damn. It's hotter than a whorehouse on nickel night.

“It was hotter than a whore house on nickel night,” Lytle says. “It was a high percentage of wool (len). We’re talking really old school. So not only did we have some of the slowest people around, they put you in these uniforms that dehydrate (mất nước) you and almost give you heat stroke.”

With a week or two of winter and a summer that stretches (kéo dài) from May to October, Southerners have lots of opportunities to conjure up (gợi lên) creative ways of describing the heat. Here is one that I have been using since the 80’s that my mom made up: Hotter than a hooker's doorknob on nickel night.

Atsumi Fashion Co., a sewing company based in Toyama Prefecture, is producing masks by repurposing women’s underwear. The company began utilizing the cloth lining from bras after an employee realized similar materials were being used in disposable masks.

“We hope we can contribute to society (đóng góp cho xã hội) as the mask shortage (thiếu hụt khẩu trang) continues,” said Hiroshi Hinata, the company’s sales manager (giám đốc bán hàng). “Even these masks can prevent the virus from spreading to others through coughing or sneezing.”

Employees are making masks after working hours at the company’s factory in Himi. They tried to devise new methods after the city called on local businesses to help provide masks for workers at City Hall, which only had 600 left.
