"Twice-told tale" nghĩa là gì?

Chắc ai cũng đọc rồi nhỉ? Photo by Leah Kelley from Pexels

"Twice-told tale" = chuyện kể hai lần -> nghĩa là chuyện cũ rích.

Ví dụ
I analyze (phân tích) ideas about language and trustworthiness (đáng tin cậy) that are embedded (cài cắm) in ideas about secondhand speech, twice-told tales.

The tale does get told, however. Indeed, if there is such a thing as a twice-told tale, surely that tale must be a tale 72 the stillness (yên lặng) that comes to all.

In the second part of this twice-told tale, the portrait (chân dung) of Maitre Brunet Latin, of Maestro Brunetto Latino, becomes that of the teacher of theory and the writer of books.

The text therefore is a twice-told tale. Various witnesses (nhân chứng) tell Marlow; Marlow tells the story as he sees it to a group of listeners on a veranda (hành lang) on a certain evening; one member of that audience presumably (có lẽ) tells us the words which make up the total text of the novel, augmented (tăng thêm) particularly by a packet of documents addressed to the "privileged" (đặc quyền) story teller.

"Live to tell the tale" nghĩa là còn sống để mà kể lại (sau khi may mắn thoát chết).

Ví dụ
If we were Elliot, we’d be a slightly terrified (kinh hãi) – it’s not everyday you wreck your boss and live to tell the tale. “I’m in big trouble,” said Gordon. “I’ve got no resets … but we will see. I’ll get back to pit road and see what happens.”

He was right. The clinic sent me straight to hospital. And so began my personal fight (trận chiến cá nhân) with the coronavirus that has struck at least 3 million other people around the world. Obviously, I lived to tell the tale. And so have almost all the other 3 million victims (nạn nhân).

With adventures (cuộc phiêu lưu) spanning five films, Jack Sparrow was able to lose and regain his ship The Black Pearl, get trapped in Davy Jones' Locker and live to tell the tale, defeat (đánh bại) the likes of Blackbeard and the might of the Royal Navy, and plunder (vơ vét) mythical treasure (kho báu) like the Fountain of Youth and Poseidon's Trident.

"Tale of woe" = câu chuyện về nối buồn -> nghĩa là lời kể lể về vấn đề cá nhân của ai (bất bình, khó chịu...)

Ví dụ
“Oh, Sean, I must be boring you with my tale of woe. Let's have another drink and a fun evening.

The history of the scientific exploration (thám hiểm khoa học) of Antarctica is riddled (bí ẩn) with tales of woe, most often loss of life for the continent’s (lục địa) earlier explorers.

That accomplished, he confides (tâm sự) in her his tale of woe and she feels compassion (thương cảm) for him. He cures her of her blindness and later teaches her how food can be cooked.

This, it turned out, was a shipwrecked (đắm tàu) Chinese merchant (thương gia), and he, seeing Bhattathiri, went up to him and told him his tale of woe, of how he lost all his men and possessions (tài sản) in a storm. 'I've lost everything in the storm,' said the merchant.

"Tell tales out of school" nghĩa là gì?

"Tell tales (out of school)" nghĩa là mách lẻo, bàn tán, đặt điều. Còn "tell-tales" hoặc "tell a/the tales" nghĩa là tiết lộ sự thật.

Ví dụ
Coronavirus is hazardous (nguy hiểm) for some people. What's the tell-tale sign you've been infected – and need medical intervention (can thiệp y tế)?

Leo Varadkar has said he doesn’t think he’d be telling tales “out of school” by letting us know we’re not there yet when it comes to allowing any easing (nới lỏng) of the lockdown.

It’s probably a good idea for you to suggest doing so under the terms (điều khoản) of an NDA so that your supplier (who will already be feeling in a vulnerable (dễ tổn thương) position) doesn’t need to worry that you’ll be telling tales out of school.

Between 1945 and 1990, just three former prime ministers (thủ tướng) chose to publish books about their political lives (đời sống chín trị). Two of them – Billy Hughes and Robert Menzies – produced two books each, and both political veterans (kỳ cựu) sought to avoid “telling tales out of school”.

Tác hại của kiểm soát giá

Inhibiting the ability for consumers to communicate their demand to sellers through price controls is analogous to cutting a telephone cord in the middle of an emergency phone call.

ngăn chặn khả năng người tiêu dùng truyền đạt nhu cầu của họ tới người bán thông qua kiểm soát giá tương tự như cắt dây điện thoại giữa cuộc gọi khẩn cấp.

The open-source project, dubbed Connected Units for Respiratory (hô hấp, để thở) Ailments (CURA, or Latin for "cure") is harnessing (khai thác để sản xuất điện (một con sông, một thác nước...)) the skills of experts from around the world to develop self-contained, mobile ICUs that can be plugged into hospitals or installed in parking lots (bãi đỗ xe).

…while I have written about Taiwan’s use of cellphone-enforced quarantines for recent travelers and close contacts of those infected, I should also note that every single positive infection (ca nhiễm, dương tính) — symptomatic (có tính chất triệu chứng) or not — is isolated away from (bị cách ly) their home and family. That is also the case in South Korea, and while it was the case for Singaporean citizens, it was not the case for migrant workers, which is a major reason why the virus has exploded in recent weeks.

Here’s the thing, though: isolating people is hard. It would be very controversial. It would require overbearing police powers (sức mạnh cảnh sát) that people in the West are intrinsically allergic to (về bản chất rất dị ứng). Politicians that instituted such a policy would be very unpopular. It is so much easier to let tech companies build a potential magic bullet (viên đạn bạc), and then demand they let government use it; most people wouldn’t know or wouldn’t care, which appears to matter more than whether or not the approach would actually work (or, to put it another way, it appears that the French government sees privacy as a club with which to beat tech companies, not a non-negotiable principle their citizens demand).

So that is why I have changed my mind: Western governments are not willing to take actions that we know work because it would be unpopular and controversial (indeed, the fact that central quarantine is so clearly a violation of liberties is arguably a benefit, because there is no way people would tolerate it once the crisis is over). And, on the flipside, that makes digital surveillance too dangerous to build. Politicians would rather leverage tech companies to violate liberty on the sly, and tech companies, once they have the capability, are all too willing to offload the responsibility of using it wisely to whatever government entity is willing to give them cover. There just isn’t much evidence that either side is willing to make hard choices.

'We're modern slaves': How meat plant workers became the new frontline in Covid-19 war

News of the first Covid-19 death at the Tyson Foods poultry plant (nhà máy thịt gia cầm) in Camilla, south-west Georgia, spread slowly (lan ra chậm chạp).

“It was like they were keeping a secret (giữ bí mật),” said Tara Williams, a 47-year-old worker at the plant, as she described her account of management’s response to the death of her colleague Elose Willis. “It took them about two weeks to just put a picture up, to acknowledge she had died.”

Williams had worked alongside Willis in the “de-boning” section of the plant until she died on 1 April, aged 56. She had spent 35 years at the facility – five days a week, 10 hours a day, 100,000 slaughtered chickens a shift.

Willis was the first Tyson employee to succumb to (thua, chịu không nổi, chết) Covid-19 at the Camilla plant, but two others would follow in short succession, a marker of the precarity faced by thousands of meat processing workers pushed to toil, closely packed, on the frontlines throughout the pandemic in plants that have quickly become coronavirus hotspots. At least 20 meat packing workers have died from the virus nationwide and 5,000 have become infected, according to union officials, as close to two dozen facilities closed – some temporarily – over the past few weeks.

"Flesh and blood" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Philipe Cavalcante on Unsplash

"Flesh and blood" = máu và thịt -> nghĩa là con người ai cũng mắc lỗi lầm, không ai là hoàn hảo cả, nghĩa khác là người thân của ai đó.

Ví dụ
He was flesh and blood, he came to life as all human beings do, he grew up among (giữa, với nhau) flesh and blood.

J.J. wanted her to be totally, but also he wanted it to be obvious that she wasn't a bot — that she was flesh and blood and had a relationship with Poe in the past.

Turning to Damon, I said: "We can't give him away." He replied: "Ollie is our flesh and blood, Georgie - yours and mine. We are his parents. If we are not going to look after (trông nom) and protect him, who will?"
