"Chase the dragon" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Maurício Eugênio from Pexels

"Chase the dragon" = đuổi theo rồng -> (tiếng lóng) nghĩa là hút chất kích thích, heroin. Cụm từ lấy từ hình tượng con rồng trong thần thoại Trung Quốc, ẩn dụ chuyển động lên xuống uốn lượn của khói bốc lên giống đuôi rồng vậy.

Ví dụ
This is 'chasing the dragon'. Mr Fung never 'chased the dragon' in public, but in drug dens (tụ điểm) or lavatories (nhà vệ sinh).

He would never find out that his daughter was teaching the Bharatani women how to 'chase the dragon' – a game in which heroin is heated on foil until it turns black and wriggles like a snake or dragon.

Beads of sweat covered his forehead as he fought off the painful urge to chase the dragon. Like a silk worm devouring a Mulberry leaf, his appetite (thèm thuồng) was insatiable (tham lam vô độ). The opium (thuốc phiện) was now taking control of his body and his mind.

“You're chasing the dragon.”
Georgia's heart pushed into her throat. “What did you say?”
“Isn't that what they call it? Heroin?” She picked up the crack pipe and fished a lighter out of her pocket. “You want a hit?”

"Under the banner of" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Vincent M.A. Janssen from Pexels

"Under the banner (of something)" = dưới ngọn cờ/biểu ngữ của -> nghĩa là gắn nhãn bản thân, xác định mình là người của tổ chức nào, có ý nghĩa gì... hoặc tỏ ý ủng hộ điều gì.

Ví dụ
Other important figures who had their own dreams for gathering what was left of the Ottoman Empire under the banner of Islam failed to bring Kemal Pasha to their side.

A nobleman (quý tộc) is also said to have carried the banner of St. William of York, and the English Edwards and Henrys won their victories under the banners of St. Edward the Confessor and St. Edmund of Bury.

My patriotic spirit made me as a teenager cry out against Japan on the streets of Jilin and carry on a risky underground struggle dodging (đấu tranh ngầm) the enemy's pursuit. Under the banner of anti-Japanese struggle I had to endure hardships going hungry and sleeping outdoors in the deep forests of Mountt Paektu, push my way through endless snowstorms and wage (bắt đầu) long bloody battles convinced of national liberation (giải phóng dân tộc), fighting against the formidable (ghê gớm) enemy scores of times stronger than our forlorn (đáng thương) force.

"Make a federal case of" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Matt Popovich on Unsplash

"Make a federal case of" có từ federal là liên bang -> cụm từ này nghĩa là phóng đại, làm lớn chuyện lên.

Ví dụ
He made a mistake, he apologized, let's not make a federal case of this. I am a woman that has been in the corporate world and you have to have a bit of thick skin, you can hear and read how sorry he is, get over it..just a moment in a lapse (nhầm lẫn) of good judgement.

Uncertainly allows it to raise revenue (hoa lợi) by arbitrarily (tùy tiện) coercing (ép buộc) settlements (thỏa thuận) from taxpayers who don’t want to ‘make a federal case of it.’ And what qualifies as ‘insurance’ and what does not will probably always be somewhat uncertain.

No need to make a federal case of this. The next time your boyfriend offers you his handkerchief (khăn mùi xoa), acknowledge his thoughtfulness (quan tâm) and then wave him off.

"Be not much chop" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Omar López from Pexels

"Be not much chop" nghĩa là không thỏa đáng, không tốt như mong đợi, không hài lòng. Chủ yếu nghe thấy ở Úc hoặc Canada.

Ví dụ
Sid's pretty sure it's not actually gangrene (bệnh thối hoại), but it's still not much chop.

I'm hoping for some time off for a shufty around Birmingham – not much chop after London, but it's amazing what fun one can find in afraid shelters.

Schmidt eased his bulk into a kitchenchair. 'Tracking down Clarence's death was harder than studying for Sergeant's exams. Our records were not much chop in those days.'

Everything's all right. The water's a cloud and he's floating on it now, living in the moment, getting away, and he feels his mood lightening by the minute. There's not much chop.

"Chop logic with" nghĩa là gì?

"Chop logic with (one)" nghĩa là cãi vã với ai.

Ví dụ
I cannot chop logic with you all day.

I shall not descend (đi xuống) into the arena to “chop logic” with the learned Doctor.

There had to be a way in, otherwise no one would ever make records. But Dave knew better than to chop logic with Lenny. So he decided to do it on his own.

I knew I should not be allowed to “chop logic” with Dr.Spry, otherwise I should have ventured to point out the singularly unfortunate admission involved in his hypothesis (giả thuyết), that perhaps my house had been hitherto (cho đến nay) undervalued.

"What am I, chopped liver?" nghĩa là gì?

Bánh mì phải có pa-tê. Photo by Ksenia Chernaya from Pexels

"What am I, chopped liver?"

No doubt you have heard the expression “What am I, chopped liver?” This always puzzled me.

I sigh. "I'm not going for her. She just... made me think if she can do it, I can do it."
“What am I, chopped liver?” I know she's a bit hurt that I'm going there and not to Spain, especially over Christmastime.

“Only those could hope to prevail against (chiếm ưu thế) such odds. And even then it is no sure thing. Let us take two of Blödhgarm's spellcasters (thuật sĩ). No one else is fit for the task, not among the Varden.”
“Oh, and what am I, chopped liver?”

Evie saved their college funds and their home. She got a job. What did she have to feel guilty about? And why do children know exactly the wrong time to ask a question?
“Hey, what am I, chopped liver?” Evie said.
Sophie fell back onto her pile of stuffed animals and giggled (cười). “I don't like chopped liver!".

"Rest on your laurels" nghĩa là gì?

Coi chừng ngủ quên đó. Photo courtesy: davide fantasia

"Rest on one's laurels" = nghỉ ngơi trên vinh quang -> ngủ quên trên chiến thắng.

Ví dụ
“It’s often hard for Americans to accept the fact that we aren’t the best at everything,” he said. “The surest way to guarantee that you won’t be the best is to rest on your laurels and not continually challenge yourself. And where better to do that, than at college?”

However, he cannot afford to rest on his laurels. CNN analysis indicates that his advantage over Trump is actually smaller than that which Clinton secured in the 2016 election – which she lost. The narrower lead "could cost Biden 0.5 points nationally on the whole compared to where Clinton ended up. That may not seem like a lot, though it could make the difference in a close election," according to the analysis.

Kylie Jenner is one of the world’s most successful young entrepreneurs (người khởi nghiệp) and a popular member of the Kardashian-Jenner family circle. She rose to fame on the family’s reality show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and as the years went on, continued to attract legions of young fans. In 2015, Jenner debuted her now-iconic lip kit, followed shortly by her Kylie Cosmetics makeup line. Her products became hugely successful, and in short order, Jenner became very wealthy. Still, she wasn’t content (bằng lòng) to rest on her laurels, and over the years, she has continued to develop and launch new products.

Quê chưa nè! Photo courtesy: Y Nakanishi

"A miss is as good as a mile" -> sai một li đi một dặm.

Ví dụ
It does not matter that you scored two marks less than her, you will not be given the prize because a miss is as good as mile.

However, just as a miss is as good as a mile, the tolerance for C botulinum (vi khuẩn gây bệnh ngộ độc thịt) is rightly zero. Yet this also means 2,499,962 tonnes of Fonterra-manufactured product is unaffected. Getting that message out is vital (quan trọng) to get our dairy products moving again.

The detail of the review makes the point that elections are won and lost because of three things: leadership (people), structures (party) and perceptions (policy). Labor fell (just) short but a miss is as good as a mile and a lot of people are very unhappy. Now it's off their chest (nói ra điều mà làm nặng lòng bấy lâu). The problem was Shorten and next time Labor will win, right?

"Put a rocket under" = đặt tên lửa ở dưới -> nghĩa là động viên, khích lệ ai làm việc gì nhanh hơn, hiệu quả hơn, nhiều năng lượng hoặc nhiệt tình hơn.

Ví dụ
The U.S. currency's (tiền tệ) drop has put a rocket under gold prices and has the yen standing near its highest in four months, the euro just below a 22-month high and the kiwi close to its strongest since January.

Australian manufacturers are struggling to compete as gas exploration and electricity proves to be a major blockade (trở ngại) for Australian industry, while cheap gas has put a rocket under American manufacturing.

Excitement around share trading has put a rocket under public markets which have already listed companies.

"Meals on Wheels" = bữa ăn di động -> nghĩa là chương trình giao đồ ăn cho người già, người bệnh và những người không thể ra khỏi nhà ho tự nấu ăn.

Ví dụ
Henry County Senior Services is maintaining its commitment to make sure older residents have all the food they need in these difficult times. Shawn Norris is the assistant director of Henry County Senior Services. He said the local Meals on Wheels Program continues to serve 265 meals a day for homebound (chỉ ở trong nhà) seniors.

Meals on Wheels delivers a hot, nutritious (bổ dưỡng) meal daily to over 550 recipients across Anderson County, but it is so much more than a meal. MOW volunteers deliver food, interacting with and checking out the recipients well-being while they are there.

Nationally, Meals on Wheels reports nine out of 10 community programs are seeing an increase in need (nhu cầu).

"There's not much to choose between" nghĩa là gì?

Vấn đề nan giải. Photo by cottonbro from Pexels

There's not much/nothing to choose between (two people or things)" nghĩa là không biết chọn cái nào bởi không có sự khác biệt đáng kể.

Ví dụ
There's not much to choose between men and women when they are canting (giả dối) to find out something they want to know.

Therefore, he could not believe that there is nothing to choose between a life that ranks this activity first and a life that gives it a lower priority.

A choice like that is completely pointless and leaves the player wondering why he or she was even given a choice in the first place – there's nothing to choose between.

In wealth per head, there's not much to choose between Brazil and Malaysia – an average of $2,160 per head against $1,940 – while Kenyan poverty is striking (ấn tượng).

"Cannot choose but" nghĩa là gì?

"Cannot choose but" nghĩa là không còn lựa chọn nào khác, phải làm việc này, chỉ có thể làm việc này.

Ví dụ
I cannot choose but pity her.

I cannot choose but laugh with Democritus.

I can't choose but weep (khóc), to think they should lay him i' the cold ground.

Men that have senses, cannot choose but receive some ideas by them; and if they have memory, they cannot but retain (giữ lại) some of them; and if they have any distinguishing faculty (năng lực), cannot but perceive the agreement or disagreement of some of them with another; as he that has eyes, if he will open them by day, cannot but see some objects, and perceive a difference in them.

"Let your emotions show" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Rafael Serafim from Pexels

"Let (one's) emotions show" nghĩa là hãy thể hiện cảm xúc, để cảm xúc dẫn lối con tim.

Ví dụ
Someone who is practical and trustworthy affords you the safety you need to let your feelings show.

The lesson seems to be to avoid unreasonable or excessive emotion and to control your feelings, carefully picking the spots when and where you let your emotions show.

Tom works for a lot of shows, but he understands that 'America's Most Wanted' is different: while working at other shows you're expected to remain objective, but at America's Most Wanted it's not only allowed but expected that you will let your emotions show.

At one point during my thirty days at the safe house, before I went back to our old apartment while preparations were still being worked out for our relocation (di dời), a staff told me very directly, “Do not let your emotions show, or your son will be taken away from you, do you understand? Do not cry or get mad. Let the system do its job."

"Be choked with/by emotion" nghĩa là nghẹn ngào vì xúc động, quá choáng ngợp, nhiều cảm xúc đến khó tả.

Ví dụ
"This painting..." His voice was choked with emotion. " makes me want to live another day."

Unable to contain (kiềm chế) himself, his throat was choked with emotion and his speech was impeded by deep sighing.

I felt choked with emotion as the full enormity (tàn ác) of what had taken place started to materialize (thành hiện thực). I could barely speak.

It was almost the first time he'd spoken since leaving the hotel, and his voice choked with emotion. He dared not look up in case the nanny or her boyfriend saw the tears in his eyes.

Lý do trẻ vị thành niên nên thủ dâm sớm

để phát hiện có bị hẹp bao quy đầu không mà đi chữa chứ :D
This Penis (dương vật) Condition (tình trạng) Often Goes Undetected (không được phát hiện) Until a Person Tries to Masturbate (thủ dâm)

It was 2:30 am on a November morning when Steve woke up to the snuffles (sự khụt khịt; tiếng kêu khụt khịt; sự nghẹt mũi; giọng nghẹt mũi; (từ hiếm,nghĩa hiếm) lời nói đạo đức giả) of his three-month-old son. The 35-year-old from Ontario slung on a bathrobe and went to change his baby’s diaper (tã). As he tossed the used diaper in the trash (sọt rác), he caught a glimpse (nhìn thoáng qua) of his son’s penis, and something that had evaded him since birth suddenly became crystal clear. “After seeing how his foreskin worked, that's when it clicked for me,” Steve says. “Honestly, I had always thought mine was different from others because I was not circumcised (cắt bao quy đầu (của một người đàn ông) theo một lễ nghi tôn giáo hoặc vì những lý do y học; cắt âm vật của một phụ nữ).”

Steve experiences a medical condition in which he is unable to pull his foreskin back past his glans (the round part forming the end of the penis). This condition—known as ‘phimosis’ (chứng hẹp bao quy đầu) —is congenital (bẩm sinh) in most male babies, whose penises are still developing and therefore have adhesions preventing full flexibility of the foreskin. Around 96 percent of baby boys have a non-retractable foreskin, but biological changes and the onset of erections (cương cứng) mean that the foreskin becomes looser as they grow older. By the time men reach 18 years old, the figure drops to around two percent and is referred to as ‘pathological phimosis.’

The most common cause is infection to the penis due to poor hygiene.

When he lost his penis (dương vật) to a blood infection (nhiễm trùng máu), Malcolm MacDonald underwent a groundbreaking procedure (phẫu thuật cực kỳ sáng tạo) to have a new one grown on his arm, before it could be grafted (cấy, ghép) to his groin (háng). However, medical delays  (chậm trễ y tế) have left the 45-year-old with the penis attached to his forearm (cẳng tay) for the last four years.

MacDonald told The Sun he was “completely gutted” when his penis fell off in 2014, after an infection in his perineum ((giải phẫu) đáy chậu (vùng giữa hậu môn và bộ phận sinh dục)) – otherwise known as the “gooch” or “grundle” – turned into sepsis ((y học) sự nhiễm trùng)

...The father of two turned to alcohol, feeling like “a shadow of a man” for the two years after losing his penis, until his GP referred him to Professor David Ralph, a phallus (tượng dương vật (để tôn thờ, biểu tượng cho sức sinh sản của thiên nhiên)) construction expert at University College Hospital London (UCHL).

Dr Ralph – who, in 2018, created a “bionic penis” for a British man who was born without one – told MacDonald he would be able to build him a penis out of skin from his left arm. In a £50,000 NHS-funded procedure, doctors were able to roll this skin – containing nerves and blood vessels – into the shape of a penis, before adding a urethra ((giải phẫu) niệu đạo (ống dẫn nước tiểu từ bàng quang ra ngoài cơ thể), đường niệu, ống đái) and two tubes that will allow MacDonald to pump the appendage into an erection (cương cứng).

"Deal a death blow" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Baylee Gramling on Unsplash

"Deal a death blow" = giáng đòn tử -> nghĩa là đánh ai đó (bằng vũ khí) chết bất đắc kỳ tử, nghĩa khác là đột ngột dừng hoạt động cái gì.

Ví dụ
Trump is about as unpopular there as anywhere on the planet. Many fear that if he is re-elected, he would not only trash what's left of Berlin's ties with Washington but deal a death blow to the concept of the West itself.

However, the addition of new draconian (hà khắc) rules beyond those required to stem the spread of COVID-19 is capricious (thất thường), and may deal a death blow to already struggling bars.

The pandemic may deal a death blow to General Electric Company (GE), which has struggled for years to reform a bloated (phồng lên) organization and shed high debt. The company missed first quarter 2020 earnings estimates by a wide margin in April, reporting a 24.8% drop in year-over-year revenue, with all divisions except health care reporting losses.

Thật kinh hãi

shared from fb nguyễn quốc vương,

shared from fb nga ho dac,

"Not the sharpest tool in the shed" nghĩa là gì?

"Not the sharpest tool in the shed" = không phải công cụ sắc bén nhất trong xưởng -> cụm từ này nghĩa là (ai đó) không được thông minh, khéo léo cho lắm (theo nhận xét của người khác).

Ví dụ
He even just called Borna Coric a “boring” personality, and game wise and three time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker a “doughnut” and “not the sharpest tool in the shed.” The last insult being particularly funny to me as I’m sure many would think the bluntest tool in the shed so to speak is Kyrgios himself.

Phongthaihong, now 22, has pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing death, conduct endangering life and two counts of negligently causing serious injury. His barrister (luật sư) Cecily Hollingworth described the young man as "not the sharpest tool in the shed, no disrespect to him". When asked to state his occupation before pleading guilty, Phongthaihong asked "what does occupation mean?".

It’s not all a disaster. It posits a nightmarish alternate reality where Pauly Shore is back atop the box office and a proposed Dundee musical is exactly as garish as you’d thought it might be (a predictable That’s Not a Knife song includes the line: “I can see you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed, but buddy I wouldn’t use that to butter my bread”), but with leading man Hogan clearly visibly creaking and struggling to emote, even in schmaltzy, supposedly heartwarming grandpappy scenes with his 9-year-old “granddaughter”, it’s hard to warm to this cynical comedy.
