"Greatest thing since indoor plumbing" nghĩa là gì?

"Greatest thing since indoor plumbing" = điều tuyệt vời nhất kể từ hệ thống ống nước trong nhà -> nghĩa là phát minh/sản phẩm tốt nhất, hữu dụng trong khoảng thời gian dài.

Ví dụ
Through this hodge-podge of projects, MONUM aspires (khao khát) do more than just fill potholes (ổ gà) and make apps. If the mechanics are going to become the greatest thing since indoor plumbing or  “Maybe Even Rescue Democracy,” as the title of a Mitchell Weiss talk at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government once put it, it will be by drawing Bostonians into a new model of civic engagement they call “peer-produced governance.”

Have said it before, will say it again ... the iPhone 8 "without" Touch ID is a looming (lù lù) catastrophe (thảm họa) ! ... Tim Cook very-likely knows this ... it's the single biggest R&D gamble Apple has made in a long, long time ... Apple made a Tech Gamble on Touch ID (under Glass), and it didn't pay off ... at least by the Intro of the iPhone 8 ... as such, IMO, only the Extremely Young and Extremely Dumb will buy-into the iPhone 8 sales pitch (that Facial Recognition / Face ID is the greatest thing since indoor plumbing) ... most will balk at the iPhone 8's price AND certainly w/o Touch ID (under Glass).

Now that summer is becoming a hazy (mơ hồ) memory, some (relatively) consistent (kiên định) peace seems to be returning to the hallowed (thiêng liên) confines (ranh giới) of the Quiet Car. Ever since Metro-North started the program back in 2011, I’ve considered it to be the greatest thing since indoor plumbing. When it functions as intended, it’s a thing of beauty, a blessed haven of peace and relaxation before and after a long day in the bauxite (bô xít) mine (mỏ). When it doesn’t, well, this grizzled railbird tends to become a Quiet Car Curmudgeon.

"Hard times show whether a friend is a true friend" nghĩa là gì?

"Hard times show whether a friend is a true friend" -> nghĩa là trong khốn khó mới biết bạn tốt.

Ví dụ
In a March interview with China Central Television, Pakistani President Arif-ur-Rehman Alvi described the relationship between China and Pakistan say that "hard times show whether a friend is a true friend."

The owner of a South Holland aerodrome (sân bay nhỏ) has given new meaning to the phrase "hard times show whether a friend is a true friend". John Wright (84), who turned an area of farmland into Fenland Airfield, in Holbeach St Johns, at least 50 years ago, went the extra mile for a friend of 40 years who lives in Cyprus. In fact, Mr Wright claims he made a "400-mile round trip" from his village home just to buy and collect a nine-seater Japanese-made hearse which he then shipped to his vehicle dealer friend on the Mediterranean (địa trung hải) island on Friday.

Unfortunately for viewers, however, that set-piece hits somewhere around the halfway mark, leaving Chase, expanding his similarly themed short into a full-length film, scrambling to fill up the remainder of Come Play’s running time before a painfully predictable, tension- and suspense-free finale that pits Sarah, the embodiment (hiện thân, biểu hiện) of the loving, protective, compassionate mother, against Larry the menace (mối đe dọa) (who’s really just misunderstood and needs a friend and hard times show whether a friend is a true friend).

"Observations is the best teacher" nghĩa là gì?

"Observations is the best teacher" = điều nhận thấy chính là người thầy giỏi nhất -> nghĩa là trăm nghe không bằng một thấy.

Ví dụ
The team found the birds ate at the feeder once every 22 minutes under normal conditions, once every 37 with calls, once every 53 with the merlin (chim cắt exalon), and once every 48 with calls and the merlin. This suggested that the birds perceived the physical bird to be a bigger danger sign than the calls. “Observations is the best teacher.”

Research shows that role models have an amplified benefit for women due to the gender biases, institutional barriers and negative stereotypes (khuôn mẫu) women have long had to contend with across a wide swathe (vạt rộng) of professional domains. In short, observations is the best teacher.

When I called Coach Yo' on Thursday as the Austin news was breaking, I jokingly accused her of being a better architect than coach. We both laughed, though I was only half kidding. Very few people in the country could have revamped and rebuilt a roster with the quality of talent she now has at her disposal in such a very short time. That doesn't mean this team will be picked high in the preseason SEC polls, or even in the top half of the conference for that matter. observations is the best teacher, and there will still be those doubters (người nghi ngờ) out there when it comes to her program.

"Gratitude is the sign of noble souls" nghĩa là gì?

"Gratitude is the sign of noble souls" = biết ơn là dấu hiệu của tâm hồn cao quý -> nghĩa là uống nước nhớ nguồn.

Ví dụ
It was Aesop, the legendary Greek fabulist (người viết truyện ngụ ngôn) and writer of fables (truyện ngụ ngôn), who said that “Gratitude is the sign of noble souls.” There is certainly no doubt that one man who stands tall and proud, courageous and fearless with great nobility in today’s political space, is definitely Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

Coetzee said: "Gratitude is the sign of noble souls. I took the liberty to say on behalf of my fellow Africans that we are humbled by this prestigious recognition, and indeed privileged to be part of the auspicious occasion (dịp thuận lợi). I am mindful of those who set me on the path to becoming a world heavyweight boxing champion and that is Thinus Strydom."

“The first thing I’m thankful for is forgiveness,” White said. “Without that, we’re all in big trouble.” Moments later, a young woman entered the food pantry. Head down, eyes furtive, she spoke softly and smiled carefully. Who knows the obstacles she’s faced? For some, simply stepping forth and asking for help provides an impediment (điều trở ngại) they find difficult or impossible to overcome. Aesop said that “gratitude is the sign of noble souls.”

"Men are blind in their own cause" nghĩa là gì?

"Men are blind in their own cause" -> nghĩa là việc người thì sáng, việc mình thì quáng.

Ví dụ
Maybe I'm helpful for others but not for myself. Okay, men are blind in their own cause.

It's none of your business (không phải chuyện của bạn), get away! Tell me why men are blind in their own cause?

Even though he's a good listener and good at dealing with someone's matters, he cannot come up with a solution for his problems. Then, just think about an adage saying "men are blind in their own cause".

"On the one hand" nghĩa là gì?

Nhưng mà anh thích Rap Việt hơn! Photo courtesy: golfbag3

"On the one hand" -> nghĩa là mặt này của vấn đề có nghĩa là, (nói về 2 mệnh đề đối lập nhau). Thường dùng để bắt đầu một mệnh đề và theo sau đó là một mệnh đề trái nghĩa.

Ví dụ
On the one hand, this Halloween would have been the first time he was really a full participant in anticipating the day, picking out his costume and enjoying the spoils of his candy hunting, and it's the first one he will miss. But on the other hand, there's a sense of relief for having a worldwide historical event to blame for half-assing (làm nửa vời, làm cho xong) it this time.

The impact of American partners (đồng minh) in the Middle East (West Asia) and the Persian Gulf region has been mixed. On the one hand, the U.S. acknowledges Jerusalem as Israel's capital is an obvious benefit to Israel, at least symbolically. On the other hand, one could also say that concern over potential U.S. disengagement (tách rời) from the region is what is driving Israel to formalize (chính thức hóa) ties with Arab states.

The lack of governmental ability or willingness to provide continued fiscal (công khố) support will result in a growth divergence (bất đồng) between advanced economies and China on the one hand, and emerging market economies, in particular outside of Asia, on the other. Not least due to the timing of the impact of the coronavirus, China is currently leading in terms of growth, followed by Europe and the United States. Growth patterns are likely to be two steps forward, one step backward, as local flare-ups of Covid-19 occur.

Do not judge a man by his looks! You should judge a man by his work.

Is that your idea man? Sorry, he's really not good-looking. FINE!!! judge a man by his work, please.

It's hard to judge somebody by his appearance but it's better to judge a man by his work, I think. Hope you will find a good employee soon.

"Endowment effect" nghĩa là gì?

'Endowment effect' nghĩa là 'hiệu ứng sở hữu' đề cập đến khuynh hướng cảm xúc khiến các cá nhân định giá một đối tượng sở hữu cao hơn, thường là phi lí, so với giá trị thị trường của nó.

Ví dụ
Mastery: Give your consumers non-transferrable rewards for using your products and engaging with your content. Ideally, these rewards require public displays of affinity or small (non-monetary) sacrifices to exploit the endowment effect (overvaluing losses) and familiarity effect (overvaluing affinity). For example, Hasbro’s brand Magic, first released in 1993, grew 30% year-on-year in 2019 on the back of innovative products like Secret Lair, which are short-notice, 24-hours exclusives requiring a “digital queue” to purchase.

Further successful examples are the so-called “endowment effect” and the “decoy effect,” in which we see a higher willingness to pay for services or products that customers already “own.” Present potential members with a pre-selected list of content at specific price points, and require them to remove benefits they do not wish to pay for: This will likely generate more income than asking members to add benefits to an empty list. You may even want to include a package for which you expect very few people to sign up, whose sole purpose is to serve as a “decoy” and attract the member to the remaining packages, which seem to offer much more attractive benefits and value for money in comparison, both for the member as well as for the greater good.

One of the most pervasive cognitive hangups is the endowment effect. It's exhibited whenever you place inordinate value on something you possess. For example, you want more for your house or used car than the market's price, just because you owned it. Your irrational reasoning is that you don't know whether the market price is "correct". That makes you feel there's a risk you might undersell. You might feel the same way about your current job role. If you give it up for a leadership role, you're not sure how things will turn out. Thinking this way, you overvalue that current position, especially if the writing's on the wall.

Hãy chọn giá đúng

-----
Dear Dan,

I recently listed some household items for sale online—things like a coffee-maker and a vacuum cleaner. Some of them belonged to me and others belonged to my mother-in-law, who asked for my help because she’s not tech-savvy. I was surprised to see that most of the items I posted for my mother-in-law sold in a few hours, while most of mine didn’t attract buyers, even though they were similar in quality. What happened?
—Barbara

People have a tendency to assign a higher monetary value to things when they own them. Behavioral economics calls this the “endowment effect.” (hiệu ứng sở hữu) It’s possible that when you were pricing the items for sale online, you unconsciously (vô tình, không có ý thức) inflated (nâng giá, thổi phồng) the value of the things you owned, while you were more objective about the value of your mother-in-law’s things and priced them in line with what people were willing to pay. To avoid the endowment effect, try asking someone to have a look at your items and suggest prices, the way that you did for your mother-in-law.

"So much to do, so little done" nghĩa là gì?

"So much to do, so little done" -> nghĩa là lực bất tòng tâm.

Ví dụ
“In 1934 when I applied to the Dean for admission to Lincoln University, I quoted Tennyson’s In Memoriam, ‘So many worlds, so much to do, so little done, such things to be.’ This was then to me, as it still is today, an inspiration and a spur. It fired within me a determination to equip myself for the service of my country.” At that pivotal time, Nkrumah was merely in his mid-twenties.

On his application form he wrote: “I neither know where to begin nor where to end because I feel that the story of my life has not been one of achievements. In truth, the burden of my life can be summarized into a single line in The Memoriam [sic] quoted by Cecil Rhodes, ‘So much to do so little done’.”

Several British statesmen such as Queen Victoria’s son-in-law, Lord Fife, and top British government colonial official, Lord Selbourne, were BSAC directors. Several others, such as Lord Salisbury, one time British Prime Minister were shareholders (cổ đông in Rhodes’ enterprises such as the diamond undertakings. He was indeed a corrupt colonialist (tên thực ăn hối lộ), and died saying: “So much to do, so little done.”

"Make your enemy your friend" -> nghĩa là hóa thù thành bạn.

Ví dụ
“Martin Luther King said that love is the greatest and only weapon that can make your enemy your friend,” he said in 2015. “We cannot beat people into salvation (sự cứu rỗi) or scare them into salvation.”

Mr. Jabbar explained that Mr. Sadr’s decision to align with Ayad Allawi, a secular (trường kỳ, muôn thuở) Shiite who leads the largely Sunni bloc (khối) called Iraqiya, in opposition to Mr. Maliki had alienated some who remember when Mr. Allawi was interim prime minister (thủ tướng lâm thời) in 2004 and 2005 and targeted the Mahdi Army, Mr. Sadr’s now-disbanded militia (lực lượng dân quân). “Part of politics is that you make your enemy your friend, and people don’t understand that,” he said.

"No matter how thin you slice it, it's still baloney" nghĩa là gì?

"No matter how thin you slice it, it's still baloney" = cắt nó mỏng cỡ nào thì nó vẫn là miếng thịt thôi ->  nghĩa là cho dù có trình bày/lập luận rõ ràng đến đâu thì câu chuyện vẫn vô lý, ngu ngốc.

Ví dụ
Goldberg’s engineering background (lai lịch) allowed his ingratiatingly (dễ thương) lumpy cartoons to retain the diagrammatic clarity both comics and patent drawings demand. So “Father Was Right”!—to quote one of the many pre-Internet memes Goldberg generated in the more than sixty series he drew in his lifetime. Others include “No matter how thin you slice it, it’s still baloney,” “Mike and Ike they look alike!”

Perhaps you need to be honest with someone and tell them you think their actions are foolish. This may not be easy, but it could stop them from doing something they might regret. On the other hand, perhaps you’re the one who is acting foolishly and the dream will make you realise that you are being too liberal with the truth. Is it time to come clean? Why do you try to dress things up rather than just calling them for what they really are? Consider the phrase, ‘no matter how thinly you slice it, it’s still baloney’- it’s possible someone is trying to distract (làm xao nhãng) you with the fine detail but you know deep down that if something doesn’t feel right, it’s not.

What did Shakespeare say about this phenomenon (hiện tượng) — a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. I prefer the way Gov. Al Smith put it — “No matter how you slice it, it’s still baloney.”

"No laughing matter" nghĩa là gì?

"No laughing matter" -> nghĩa là tình huống/chủ đề nghiêm túc, quan trọng; không phải chuyện để cười đùa.

Ví dụ
From plexiglass (thủy tinh plê xi) for performers to masks and social distancing, the welcoming of laughs back to the stage is no laughing matter. “With everything that’s going on in the world right now, we need to laugh. And we need to do it safely,” said Harry Basil, co-owner of the Laugh Factory.

For the Fone family, Halloween is no laughing matter. Shane Fone and his family moved to Bakersfield from Los Angeles just before Halloween last year, so this year is the first time the family is able to set up their haunted (bị ám) Halloween fixtures.

Who has a right (quyền) to cause such harm to others? And does the President have the right to endanger our national security as a result of getting sick as consequent of contradicting (mâu thuẫn) COVID-19 when it could have avoided? The current situation of spreading COVID-19 caused by the behavior of the president and his staff and suggesting others to do likewise is no laughing matter — unfortunately.

It says it all if you’ve even heard of this place, to be honest. Located in the heart of Byker, it’s not for the faint-hearted (nhút nhát). If you’re a regular here, you’ll have the sound of a protein shaker ringing in your ears and your most used app is MyFitnessPal. For you, the gym is no laughing matter, it’s a matter of life or death.

"Hatred is as blind as love" = lòng căm thù mù quáng như tình yêu -> nghĩa là giận quá mất khôn.

Ví dụ
Mjax has faults like all coaches but the hatred is as blind as love. If SKerr doesn't get the dubs back to the finals next year.

Hatred is as blind as love, inherently. Just dumb. So when I encounter that level of stupidity, sometimes I'll just be like, “Hey, check out my band.

Ví dụ
You're so cruel when you harmed him like the way of "When the tree is fallen, everyone runs to it with his axe."

"When a man is going downhill, everyone will give him a push" reminds us of how to be self-protective from people surrounding us.

"Travelling forms a young man" nghĩa là gì?

"Travelling forms a young man" = du lịch rèn luyện giới trẻ -> nghĩa là đi một ngày đàng, học một sàng khôn.

Ví dụ
The Niagara Falls are breathtaking and serene (trầm lặng, thanh bình). I went on a cruise that takes you right near the falls and it was like Heaven. I also did the zipline there. Travelling forms a young man. It not only rejuvenates (làm trẻ lại) you, but also heals your soul. You meet new people and see new places, which change your perspective about life.

Travelling and learning are two things that I can do as much as I like. Many people asked me why I quit my job at this age to study a language. For me, it’s worth. Travelling forms a young man. It allows me to learn about myself and where I visit. I learned how to adjust into various cultures and societies. Reading books and surfing websites can't compare to our first-hand experience.

"United we stand, divided we fall" nghĩa là gì?

"United we stand, divided we fall" -> nghĩa là đoàn kết thì sống, chia rẽ thì chết.

Ví dụ
We cannot ignore the structure of government in the United States: local issues are equally important as national campaigns. The phrase that captures this essence is simple: “United we stand, divided we fall.”

“Abraham Lincoln said in a different context, ‘United we stand, divided we fall.’ However, with our communities fighting against this virus, this point still works and still stands. We can disagree on so many different things,” Holzman said. “But against a highly transmittable respiratory (truyền qua đường hô hấp) virus, we need to follow the science.”

Few Americans today consider the truism of ‘united we stand, divided we fall.’ Therefore, many voting on November 3 will do so with the speechmaking of politicians ringing in their ears. Even fewer will have enough wisdom to see that we are standing on a precipice (vách đứng) that, if we leap, will be the end of the America on which we all depend and from which we have all drawn our strength. It will be the end of the only haven against oppression (sự đàn áp) that we know.

"Judge not, that ye be not judge" nghĩa là gì?

"Judge not, that ye be not judge" = các ngươi đừng đoán xét ai để mình khỏi bị đoán xét (trích từ Kinh Thánh) -> nghĩa là hãy sống yêu thương, chan hòa và nhường nhịn lẫn nhau (Dĩ hoà vi quý).

Ví dụ
Mathew 7:1 judge not that ye be not judge!! Darcus was my close friend and brother loved him wit my whole heart! I knew the girl also!! Criticizing and making senseless comments won't bring my bro bac!! Sometimes in life we really need to think before we act!

We had the pleasure of parachuting (nhảy dù) in Wednesday night during move-in to catch the mean machines being inspected and classified for their respective categories to compete in. Remember, "Judge not, that ye be not judge" is a fine saying, but when it comes to the Detroit Autorama, the people exhibiting their rides go all out in prepping their cars, trucks, vans, and motorcycles for this granddaddy of indoor car shows. No detail is left unattended and just as much effort goes into the show-car displays and backdrops as the vehicles themselves. At this place, the judges look at everything, so stock up wax, cleaning supplies, Q-Tips, and bring a vacuum cleaner. If there's one trophy you want to win, it's from the Detroit Autorama, and buddy, you need to work for that one—the competition is intense. This isn't a kid's soccer tournament, and not everyone can be a winner.

"Half the world know not how the other half lives" nghĩa là gì?

"Half the world know not how the other half lives" = nửa thế giới không biết nửa còn lại sống như thế nào -> nghĩa là đèn nhà ai nấy sáng, tương tự với cụm từ "a man's house is his castle".

Ví dụ
The adage (ngạn ngữ) "half the world know not how the other half lives" is especially true in farming, where our land is not only our home, but our workplace, business premises and family legacy.

It is common to hear the phrase “half the world know not how the other half lives.” And it is not possible for police under the English law to search a house without a warrant of search (lệnh khám xét) issued by a judicial magistrate (thẩm phán tòa án). The reason to take away the discretionary power of the police to enter premises to search or seize is to create checks and balances.

Further, the same judgments became a basis for recognition of ‘Privacy Rights’ in India, which means the Supreme Court of India also endorses the idea of ‘My Home is My castle’. Interestingly, if Justice D Y Chandrachud’s opinion in the K.S Puttuswamy judgment, consisted of criticism of privacy as well, given by several philosophers (nhà triết học). One such criticism against privacy was given by Catherine Mackinnon, a feminist legal scholar, who was against the idea of privacy, Mackinnon believed that when a man’s house is his castle, he may do anything he wants to do in his castle and that would include the idea of abusing his companion.

"Eat to satiety" nghĩa là gì?

"Eat to satiety" có satiety là ăn no nê, sự chán ngấy -> cụm từ này nghĩa là ăn đến ngán.

Ví dụ
There’s no specific amount to eat that's a universal rule for everyone. Body weight, metabolism, gender, and activity level are going to affect how much is enough to eat before drinking. Just eat to satiety until you’re not hungry, Hunnes says. You don’t have to stuff yourself, but give yourself permission to go in for more than a nibble (gặm).

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions has rejected the salary review and the new USD alliance that was proposed by the government this afternoon. Using their official Twitter handle, ZCTU said the government’s offer came a little too late and dismissed it as “Mazepe” which metaphorically (bằng phép ẩn dụ) likens the government’s offer to baby food which adults cant eat to satiety.

When I break my fast this year, I will eat to satiety, sealing my promise to properly nourish my body and soul in the new year. I will enjoy the company of those around me and be thankful that I have fresh, nutritious food to eat every day. Then I will come home and maybe eat more, or maybe not, because I trust my mind and my body and I know that I have no reason to doubt myself and nothing to be ashamed of.

Catch the bear before you sell his skin. The election threshold (ngưỡng cửa) is 5% in Poland. If by the autumn of this year the "Spring" continues its popularity growth, it would easily get into parliament. And if it makes efforts and builds up some more muscles in its rating, it will be able to get the seats in the European Parliament. It is rumored that after the term of office of the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, expires (at the end of the year), he would return back home. And since Tusk is a prominent representative of the Civil Platform, political life in Poland might become more lively and more complex. Undoubtedly, Tusk’s opponent, the current President of Poland and a member of the Law and Justice Party, Andrzej Duda, who would have elections next year, is becoming more active.

"A clean hand wants no washing" nghĩa là gì?

"A clean hand wants no washing" = tay sạch cần chi phải rửa -> nghĩa là cây ngay không sợ chết đứng.

Ví dụ
A clean hand wants no washing. The groundless defaming of the US to divert attention of the international society and the country’s unilateral initiation of the trade war are of no justice or morality, and will only be widely objected by the international community.

As the saying goes, "A clean hand wants no washing." Instead of fooling the world, the lies of American politicians will only further reveal their hidden political agenda. We urge them to abandon bias and the outdated Cold-War mindset, stop using Xinjiang-related issues to interfere in China's internal affairs, cease their smear campaign against China, and contribute to rather than undermine trust and cooperation between China and the US.

As justice prevails, a clean hand wants no washing. The US lodged the argument because it is jealous of China’s technological development and wants to find an excuse to launch political crackdown on China. The accusations, which are fabricated (bịa đặt, làm giả) for political reasons, are also intended to hold back China in development.

"Not mince matters" nghĩa là gì?

"Not mince matters" -> nghĩa là nói, bày tỏ điều gì rất thẳng thắn/bộc trực, không để tâm tới việc liệu nói ra có làm ai mất lòng hay không; nói toạc móng heo.

Ví dụ
According to reports, Mr. Rajnath Singh, in his meeting, did not mince matters, putting the blame entirely (toàn bộ) on the PLA for its “aggressive actions and behaviour” in seeking to “unilaterally (đơn phương) alter the status quo (hiện trạng)” in violation of all bilateral agreements. According to Xinhua, Gen.

Let’s not mince matters: this counter-movement is organised. I come from the US, so I know how the doubt brigade (lữ đoàn) works. I have specialised in addressing venues full of people shaking their heads disapprovingly about all the climate hysteria.

That is why Maricha does not mince matters when he dissuades (khuyên can) Ravana from abducting (bắt cóc) Sita. Maricha’s advice in this juncture (tình hình) is rich not merely in worldly wisdom but also in philosophical perception, pointed out Sri B. Sundarkumar in a lecture.

Otherwise, he did not mince matters and stuck to the mythological (thần thoại) character and classical form in depiction. The transformation into a male through a Yaksha further complicates matters.
