"Blow a hole in" nghĩa là gì?

Dừa trái tim mới chịu cơ Photo by Artem Beliaikin from Pexels

'Blow a hole in something' = tạo lỗ thủng lớn ở (cái gì) -> gây ra thiệt hại lớn, phá hủy thứ gì; (kinh tế) tiêu tốn, sử dụng, thất thoát một lượng lớn tiền của; làm giảm hiệu quả, phá hỏng (kế hoạch, mục tiêu, hệ thống).

Ví dụ
A former finance minister yesterday urged the government to “blow a hole in the budget” to end the “national emergency” created by Bahamas Power & Light’s (BPL) generation crisis.

Compounding the issue is the fact that the federal individual income tax provisions expire (kết thúc) in 2025, while the state's "offset" cuts stay in place. This means the money Republicans are allegedly "offsetting" to pay for their cut will disappear, leaving a significant hole in state revenue.

The expectations (kì vọng, mong đợi) come on the back of newly elected PM Johnson’s raft of pledges for increased spending - including more police and more NHS funding - which, coupled with growing expectations for fiscal stimulus (kích thích tài khóa) as the economy stagnates (trì trệ) under the pressure of Brexit uncertainty and in the face of cooling global growth could blow a hole in the deficit (thâm hụt).

"Lose my appetite" nghĩa là gì?

Nhìn thôi đã thấy "healthy" rồi Photo by Trang Doan from Pexels

'Lose one's appetite' = mất cảm giác thèm ăn -> không còn hứng thú ăn uống

Ví dụ
While the goal was to experience the much-talked about ‘plant-based’ meals, whipped up chef Paul Svensson, an exhibition by Mandy Barker caught my fancy (lôi cuốn, thu hút), but made me lose my appetite.

It wasn’t the first time a medicine caused me to lose my appetite, nor would it be the last. It was summer vacation, and my friends had all just gotten their licenses (bằng). We planned adventures for almost every day. But as I began to lose more and more weight, I became weaker and tired easily. That didn’t stop me from trying to keep up, though, because everywhere I went, I was complimented on my slim figure.

When I’m operating at a high activity level for days on end, I actually lose my appetite. When I slow it down my appetite returns, and I end up hungrier on low-activity days than I do on high-output ones. Because my body is trying to repair muscle (cơ bắp), I’m going to need more nutrients (chất dinh dưỡng). I make sure I’m hydrating, and I’m careful to eat a wide range of foods that really complement recovery, like fresh fruits and vegetables.

'Lose one's shit' -> (cách nói thô thiển/thô lỗ) mất kiểm soát bản thân, hành động; chửi mắng, chỉ trích ai

Ví dụ
CLL was a real step up (bước tiến; tăng cường). If Foley reappears for the ABs game I will really lose my shit. Would love to see Valetini or Pete Samu given a go at the 6 role, I think they will be the most impactful options there.

In all seriousness (tính chất quan trọng), JoJo said she is hoping for the big day to be “outdoor, beautiful, whimsical (kì quái),” with “tons of greenery.””On my wedding day, no matter what happens, I’m not going to lose my shit if something doesn’t go right, I need to enjoy that day!” the former Bachelorette promised.

Any musician that tells you they didn't start out as a fan of someone before they pursued (theo đuổi) their own career is lying. If I got a text from Mick Jagger or Freddie Mercury or Julian Casablancas, right now, on this regular afternoon, I would lose my shit. Connecting with my fans is so very important to me. We are in this together. And I couldn't do this if I didn't have them.

"Raise my hackles" nghĩa là gì?

Yên tâm có mẹ ở đây rồi các con Photo by Ro han from Pexels

'Raise one's hackles' = xù lông (hackles: lông vũ trên cổ gà trống); sửng cồ -> làm ai thấy khó chịu, bực dọc, tức giận.

Ví dụ
There is only one thing I can envision (mường tượng, hình dung) someone doing to the humble sausage in bread construction that would raise my hackles: putting the onion on the bread first, before the sausage.

And I hope Albanese isn’t planning to roll over on issues like “religious freedom” without such a contest, because the very words raise my hackles for their pretence (ra vẻ, giả vờ) of neutrality (trung lập), implying such freedom doesn’t come at others’ expense.

Last month, Schiewe's wife also noticed a fraudulent (lừa đảo) charge of $18.05 to Walgreens on her TD account. It was also reversed without her knowledge. "It does raise my hackles because there's been no proactive information or disclosure (phơi bày, công khai) from TD," he said.

“It did raise my hackles at first, the idea of making choices for your story based on data,” Davis said. “I thought of data as boring scientific survey stuff, but data can be answers to questions like: Whose story is this? What moved you the most? It can be creative (sáng tạo) information.”

"Soften the blow" nghĩa là gì?

Đối thoại chứ không đối đầu Photo by Jopwell from Pexels

'Soften the blow' = làm mềm/xoa dịu cú đấm -> làm tình huống xấu trở nên bớt nghiêm trọng hơn

Ví dụ
“Crop insurance (bảo hiểm) is like life insurance: It’s the last thing you want to collect because you don’t benefit from it,” Thomas said. “It protects some aspects of your operation, but you can’t make a living on crop insurance. It helps soften the blow.”

Increasing oil prices have helped soften the blow of Algeria’s economic morass (bãi lầy). From February 22-August 15, Algeria’s Saharan Blend crude oil (dầu thô) sold at an average of $67.12 per barrel, more than $17 above the average of $50 budgeted by the government for 2019.

Boeing (BA) landed a contract worth up to $999 million to produce wing sets for the A-10 Thunderbolt II. It helps soften the blow after the Pentagon canceled the Dow Jones stock's contract to produce a "kill vehicle" to shoot down missiles (tên lửa) from North Korea or Iran.

Getting nothing in return when your best player walks away is painful. It can turn a contending (chiến đấu) team into to a rebuild overnight. The Cleveland Cavaliers had to go through this heartache (nỗi đau buồn) twice after LeBron James left in free agency. But if you have a good foundation in place, you can soften the blow.

"Dance on the razor's edge" nghĩa là gì?

OMG!!! Photo courtesy Moira

"Dance on the razor's edge" = nhảy trên lưỡi dao lam -> làm điều nguy hiểm. Tương tự với “dance with death”.

Ví dụ
After dancing on the razor's edge for several years it now appears that AC/DC have confirmed (xác nhận) that they will release a new album.

Draymond Green is dancing on the razor’s edge. The Warriors forward is one technical foul (lỗi kỹ thuật) away from earning a suspension (đình chỉ) for a potential Game 7 versus the Raptors in the NBA Finals.

Where their peers (đồng nghiệp) either fell too much on the pop side (Fall Out Boy, Panic!) or on the more obscure (bí ẩn) side (Hot Rod Circuit, The Get Up Kids) of the emo divide, The Starting Line always managed to just dance on that razor’s edge and ingratiate (lấy lòng) themselves with just about everyone.

"Dance on air" nghĩa là gì?

"Dance on air" = nhảy trên không, nhảy lên cao-> phấn khích, vui vẻ.

Ví dụ
You may feel as if you are dancing on air.

Quinn made her feel like she was dancing on air. After their third time around the floor, their guests joined the couple in finishing their dance.

Alice, the tiniest vampire (ma-cà-rồng bé nhất) in the Cullen family, moves so gracefully (duyên dáng), it looks as if she is dancing on air all the time.

“If I were in your shoes, I'd dance — I would dance on air! I would bless my lucky star, there'd be smiles to spare, if I were who you are." I understood vividly (sống động) why the song said what it said and didn't say what it couldn't say.

"Dance to another tune" nghĩa là gì?

Chơi game ít thôi kẻo mất người yêu như chơi. Photo by Alexander Andrews on Unsplash

"Dance to another tune" = nhảy múa trên điệu nhạc khác -> thay đổi lối sống, thói quen để phủ hợp với hoàn cảnh mới. Ngoài ra, “dance to one’s tune” có nghĩa là làm theo ai, để cho ai điều khiển.

Ví dụ
We are on earth to dance to our own tune! We have to know who I the individual is. Do we take on other people's words to be our words?

Well, I can promise you this: you'll dance to another tune from now on! You'll find a difference when you're a pauper (kẻ ăn xin)! Most of your precious drinking and gaming friends will no longer wish to know you!

Furthermore, that walk-in needs a global structure (cấu trúc toàn cầu) that, in its rhythmic (nhịp điệu) possibilities, must be intimated to those young enough to dance to another tune, dance against the stale pacings of convention (quy tắc nhịp cũ).

Thu Phương

"Out of tune" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng hát sai nhạc nhé, sai tét đít! Photo by Colin Michael on Unsplash

"Out of tune" = lạc nhịp, không theo giai điệu -> lỗi thời/ không hòa hợp với người khác.

Ví dụ
Rates traders are gearing up (chuẩn bị) for a keynote speech from Federal Reserve (Cục Dự trữ Liên bang) Chairman Jerome Powell in Jackson Hole on Friday that could be wildly out of tune with their expectations.

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa will not be part of the Political Actors Dialogue convened (triệu tập) by President Emmerson Mnangagwa with the party describing the process as an out of tune choir (dàn hợp ca).

When former Princeton music professor (cựu giáo sư âm nhạc) Arthur Cochran unexpectedly stumbles into (tình cờ gặp) choir practice at a small-town church, he finds a group of singers who are out of tune in more ways than one.

"Make a mental note" nghĩa là gì?

Nếu sợ quên cứ viết hết ra rồi dán lên tường Photo by Startup Stock Photos from Pexels

'Make a mental note' = làm một ghi nhớ trong đầu -> ghi nhớ; cố gắng lưu giữ trong đầu

Ví dụ
David said everything was sorted out in the end and admitted he “doesn’t mind” when things go badly wrong, as he added: “I just make a mental note and think that will be a good story.”

The bracelets (vòng tay) are made of small beads shaped like fish and turtles, all resembling rock candy, which is edible (ăn được) and was a popular souvenir when we were kids. We purchase nine and make a mental note to tell the girls not to try eating them.

Delete all of your spam e-mails as soon as you wake up and unsubscribe from every self-help-blog newsletter. You already know what you’re doing! Make a mental note to book “appointments” but don’t specify which ones. Write down all the Wi-Fi passwords of every network you’ve ever connected to, just in the off chance you ever return to that same Starbucks in Istanbul.

There’s an in-room washbasin (bồn rửa) and an en-suite toilet and shower. It’s almost worth booking a journey for the delicious smelling Arran Aromatics toiletries alone, while there are plenty of power points and room service is available. The bed itself (which has a Glencraft mattress) is smaller than I expected, and if I was even just a little taller or wider I would have found it a squeeze. I make a mental note to book one of the cabins with a double bed next time.

"Dance attendance on" nghĩa là gì?

Hạnh phúc rồi sẽ đến, hãy chờ đợi thêm một chút thôi. Photo by Gift Habeshaw on Unsplash

"Dance attendance on/upon someone" có nghĩa là nghe lời hoặc làm hài lòng ai đó một cách ngoan ngoãn, khúm núm. Xuất phát từ phong tục xưa, khi cô dâu phải khiêu vũ với các vị khách trong tiệc cưới dù muốn hay không. Cụm từ này cũng có nghĩa phải chờ đợi ai lâu.

Ví dụ
It’s unnatural for the captain to ask the sailors to accept his authority (quyền hành) and it's unnatural for wise men to dance attendance on rich men; this story is misleading (sai lệch).

'What has this to do with Ryecot?' 'He was there.' Luke again told himself to be patient (kiên nhẫn). 'So you have said.' 'I thought you'd like to know. He was dancing attendance on her, and she looked as though she liked it.'

The suspense (chờ đợi, hồi hộp) would be hard to bear, but I could dance attendance on you for the remainder of the Season (mùa còn lại)—make you the envy of the ton, if possible—God knows you deserve it!—and wait until autumn to ask for your hand (cầu hôn).

"Spare my feelings" nghĩa là gì?

Hãy cứ vui cười lên, em đẹp nhất khi em cười thật xinh Photo by Tim Savage from Pexels

'Spare one's feelings' = dự trữ cảm xúc của ai -> kiềm chế tránh làm tổn thương đến cảm xúc của ai (xấu hổ, lo lắng, không thoải mái...)

Ví dụ
I need someone to try that Japanese Cheesecake Soufflé and I may need you to lie to me if it is really good. If you try it and it’s just ok, I can handle that. But if it is mind-blowingly fantastic, I might need you to tell me it was disgusting just to spare my feelings.

“I have demanded answers and received none, if he wanted to spare my feelings email me, call me, speak to me in person, but I have received nothing regarding this … appointment. The manner in which these seats are appointed is wrong and needs to be changed so that what happened to me does not happen to anyone else,” said Van Ginhoven.

Speaking of difficult decisions, Liza agreed not to see Josh anymore after promising Charles that their perceived chemistry in the Infinitely 21 ad meant nothing. To be fair, though, Liza kind of brought this on herself by traveling to Chicago and confronting Charles face to face. In her attempt to spare his feelings, she actually made him more insecure (không an toàn) about her lingering (mỏng manh) attraction to Josh.

"Blow off some steam" nghĩa là gì?

Câu cá là bài học kiên nhẫn Photo by Tomasz Filipek from Pexels

'Blow off some steam' = xì hơi nước -> làm gì đấy để giải tỏa căng thẳng hay giận giữ (ví dụ như nói chuyện với ai đó, tham gia các hoạt động thư giãn, giải trí...)

Ví dụ
We’re officially one day closer to the weekend, Toronto. In case you’re already in the mood to blow off some steam, we’ve rounded up the top events happening across the city today, Thursday, August 22.

Stressed out by bad drivers? Need to blow off some steam after a difficult week of school or work? We have a suggestion that might help you do that in a fun, safe way. Unleashed (giải phóng) Rage Room offers an axe throwing room, and “rage rooms” where you can smash, crush and throw various objects while in a safe environment and wearing protective gear.

Thanks to her YouTube channel "Heather’s Closet," Heather Dubrow has been giving us loads of footage of Dubrow Chateau, with seemingly no room left unseen. Want to see The Real Housewives of Orange County alum’s sumptuous (xa xỉ, lộng lẫy) private office? Or where the kids blow off some steam? Or the home’s enormous movie theater? Since opening the 22,000-square-foot home’s doors to the world, Heather has unveiled every aspect of meticulous design that went into the stunning property.

"Hold (one's) feet to fire" nghĩa là gì?

Bây giờ như nào, đưa tiền hay ăn đạn??? Photo by: Jonathan Cooper on Unsplash

"Hold (one's) feet to fire" = giữ chân trong đống lửa -> nghĩa là gây áp lực để khiến người ta đưa ra thông tin, phải làm việc, phải chấp nhận.

Ví dụ
So it’s incumbent (người giữ chức vụ) on districts to spend wisely (sáng suốt) and show improvement (tiến triển). The state’s A-F accountability (trách nhiệm giải trình) system is a good tool for voters to hold their feet to the fire. Fort Worth ISD has earned a pat on the back — along with a gentle push (cú đẩy nhẹ) on the improvements needed to get to a B and beyond.

She had an amazing ability (khả năng) to offer condolences (lời chia buồn) when you walked in with a stack of parking tickets but would gently hold your feet to the fire on paying the associated fines. She was more than the “receptionist” for town hall. She was the gatekeeper (người giữ cổng), and would gently (nhẹ nhàng) remind anyone new to town, or new to the system, of how things worked here in Crested Butte.

Even though nobody is actually ever canceled, the importance of people who call out the homophobic, racist (phân biệt chủng tộc), ableist, misogynist, etc. etc. among us can’t be understated. The pressure applied to celebrities and those in the public eye from hordes of regular folks and activists is vastly important in articulating what actions will and won’t be accepted by society anymore. Every time someone becomes a trending topic (chủ đề) for hate speech and intolerance (không khoan dung), it’s a reminder that there will always be people among us who will hold your feet to the fire if you say something that could threaten our lives.

"Chỉ còn gần em một giây phút thôi. Một giây nữa thôi là xa nhau rồi." Photo by Esther Driehaus on Unsplash

"Love you and leave you" là thành ngữ được dùng để nói rằng bạn phải đi dù bạn rất muốn ở lại lâu hơn. Đây cũng là một cách nói hài hước để tạm biệt.

Ví dụ:
Before I love you and leave you, I have two things left to say. The first regards the head photo of the report...

We’ve potentially (có khả năng) got a long day ahead of us tomorrow, so we’re going to love you and leave you for this evening.

Right, it's time for me to love you and leave you. Thanks for joining me and for all of your good luck messages for the girls. (From BBC Sport)

On what’s to come, she added: “Well, as they say 'you tease (chọc ghẹo) the ones you love' so I will have to love you and leave you on that one but it’s not over and it’s just as exciting.

"Lead someone a merry/pretty dance" = dẫn nhảy -> gây khó khăn, trở ngại cho ai/ làm phiền ai. Cũng có thể nói "someone leads you a dance" hoặc "leads you a merry chase".

Ví dụ
Surprise your little one with a knock on the bedroom door from Santa’s elves who will lead you on a merry dance to La Mon’s Winter Wonderland.

On their quest (hành trình) to perfect a tongue sandwich, Max’s dad’s drone (flycam) is destroyed, leading them on a merry dance around the city to get it replaced - which takes in some pretty eye-opening (bắt mắt) stuff for a 45 year old film critic, let alone three dorky tweens.

The Connor Beasley-ridden speedster (tay đua ngựa tốc độ) was backed (ủng hộ) as if defeat was out of question though, starting as the 4-1 favourite, and led his 21 rivals on a merry dance as he burst out of the stalls (chuồng) before forging (vượt) a purposeful path down the centre of the course.

"Times have changed" nghĩa là gì?

Rồi ai cũng khác. Photo by  Murray Campbell

"Times have changed" = Thời gian/mọi thứ đã thay đổi -> Hoàn cảnh/tình huống hiện tại đã khác hẳn so với trước.

Ví dụ
The next time a student acts out, they might just ignore it. How times have changed. In the (g) olden days, parents would gift teachers with canes on the first day of school. If this happened every year, teachers back then must have had quite an impressive collection.

Times have changed. In 1980, when Super Sunday began, the idea of walking around with a tiny computer in your pocket connecting you to people on the other side of the world was something out of science fiction (khoa học viễn tưởng). People often scheduled times on Sundays to talk to their out-of-town relatives (họ hàng xa) because long-distance calling was only five cents a minute on Sundays.
9
Times have changed but are no longer strange. Beijing just upped the ante and called the pro-democracy protesters “terrorists” (kẻ khủng bố) . Hong Kong is a hair closer to becoming the next Tiananmen massacre (cuộc thảm sát) as China warns of playing with fire and hints at military intervention (sự can thiệp quân sự). The United States led by Trump has vowed to escalate trade war with China, and as of now both are bleeding sea of red and flirtatious (thích ve vãn) volatility (tính nhẹ dạ) reign in their major indexes. More so, China’s economy has slowed the most in twenty six years as a direct result of the trade war.

"Big-girl pants" = Quần cho cô gái chín chắn -> Từ lóng chỉ khả năng hành xử như một người phụ nữ trưởng thành. Cụm này cũng hàm ý một cách miệt thị rằng họ đang hành xử không phù hợp như một người phụ nữ thực thụ.

Ví dụ
We can either keep doing it or I can put my big girl pants on and realise that we're going to have to make some big decisions.

“Here we go again. Here we go again. And then you get mad, you want to cry. And you have to put your big-girl pants on and keep moving on.

Furthermore, Christine demanded that Tori finally act like a producer and do some dirty work. More specifically, she wanted Tori to fire the head writer since they couldn’t afford to lose Jason, and Jason had previously threatened to quit the show if the writer wasn’t fired. "On its/one's last leg" có nghĩa là (vật) gần hỏng, mất chức năng hoặc (người) sắp chết.

Ví dụ

Maelstrom looked like he was on his last leg, and I could tell this was going to end in one final attack. “Tsunami.” Maelstrom said in a deep low growl (càu nhàu).

"A worm will turn" = Con giun xéo lắm cũng quằn -> Kể cả một điềm tĩnh, ngoan ngoãn cũng phải đòi quyền lợi của mình hoặc phản kháng trong một tình huống không thể chịu đựng nổi.

Ví dụ
The Blake Street Worm Turners can't twist and twirl in the wind beyond the ... hasn't waned, however, as he stated recently: “The worm will turn.

How many times can a manager stand in front of the media after a tough loss (trận thua đau) and say, confidently and with a straight face, that “the worm will turn”?

"Hold a candle to" = giữ cây nến -> dùng để so sánh, có nghĩa là tốt hoặc đáng mong đợi so với người/vật khác.

Ví dụ
A lot of people don’t think that he or Andrew Garfield can still hold a candle to Tom Holland, but hey, we’ve all got our favorites. For my own opinion, Garfield was better than Maguire and Holland has them both beat in terms of youth (tuổi trẻ) and the overall Peter Parker persona (tính cách).

Johann Schmidt, the Red Skull, is easily one of the deadliest (chết chóc) villains (phản diện) that Marvel has to offer. Going beyond being Captain America’s oldest enemy, Red Skull has committed acts so atrocious (tởm lợm) that he is hard to hold a candle to.

"I was like, 'where? Where am I gonna be a leading man?'" Porter said. "There is not a bone in my body that is ever going to be able to hold a candle to the masculinity (nam tính), to the straightness, that the archetypes (hình mẫu) require.”
