"Live a lie" nghĩa là gì?

Hãy mạnh mẽ đối diện sự thật và tự mình giải thoát mình. Photo by Stephany Lorena on Unsplash

"Live a lie" = sống trong giả dối -> tự lừa dối mình.

Ví dụ
She lived a lie for decades – until the day she set herself free.

His wedding to Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) was called off (hoãn lại) as she decided she couldn’t live a lie in last week's episodes of EastEnders.

All his life, he says, his mother had worked to instil (truyền dẫn) in him her core values (giá trị cốt lõi): don’t lie, say please and thank you, don’t bring police to my door. And here he was, accused not only of living a lie but of making money out of it.

Despite hoping she could forgive him, Whitney realised she couldn't live a lie - and threatened to expose (đe dọa tiết lộ) Callum's secret. Now the actress has revealed what happens next. She said: "She 100% still blames Ben, she’s still really angry at him for ruining everything.

"Get your goat" nghĩa là gì?

"Nón này che nắng che mưa, che cả bốn mùa xuân hạ thu đông" Photo by Mateo Almendares from Pexels

'Get one goat' = bắt lấy con dê của ai.

You seem cheerful but does anything get your goat? No, I’m a miserable (đau khổ, đáng thương) so-and-so! I find impoliteness (bất lịch sự) quite annoying. I’m quite old-fashioned in that way.

If Batton has any concern, it's shooing (xua đuổi) ravenous deer (hươu đói) away from the daisies and hostas that he invests so much time in. But even that doesn't get his goat too much. It's a small price to pay for getting to be out in nature so often. If a perennial (cây lâu năm) doesn't quite perform one year, it'll be back the next. And so will Batton.

A serious mood (tâm trạng) turns into something much more friendly and social as the Moon shifts from Capricorn into Aquarius today, so we turn from dealing with practical and organizational matters into expressing our ideas and connecting with our peers. But the big news is that this is the day that the Sun joins with the love planet, Venus. This lends an atmosphere of bubbly pleasure to a day where small irritations (làm phát cáu) might otherwise get your goat. So focus on the positive today and open your heart to all the joys in life!

"Live it up" nghĩa là gì?

Lúc đi hết mình lúc về hết buồn!!! Photo by Med Mhamdi on Unsplash

"Live it up" là sống sôi nổi, sống hết mình, cũng có thể hiểu là sống hoang phí.

Ví dụ
Sin City, where we love, laugh and live it up. Las Vegas is where we celebrate and do the victory dance.

When fans spotted the stars livening it up, it wasn’t long before phones were whipped out and videos posted.

"The wise people have always said, 'Enjoy life now. Enjoy every second of it. Live it up now.' And they're right; they're correct," Philip continued.

And this is essentially a beach house for Lacob, who also has a mansion (dinh thự) in Silicon Valley's Atherton. But hey, when you run point on an organization that has won three titles in the past five years, you get to live it up.

"Live in sin" nghĩa là gì?

"Live in sin" = sống trong tội lỗi. Cụm từ này ý chỉ các cặp đôi ăn nằm với nhau như vợ chồng dù chưa kết hôn.

Ví dụ
I have a great boyfriend whom I’ve been with for several years, and we just bought a house together. The problem: His mother thinks we’re living in sin because we’re not married.

Summer Grant says her fourth and second grade daughters Summara-Rayn, 10, and Summaia, 7, went to Chapel Hill Christian School for years before an administrator banned them because he believes the Akron mother is living in sin, WKYC reports.

Millions of couples across the country forego the once-customary (lệ tục) steps of courtship (tán tỉnh) and move in together before marriage. Yet, for lovers in five states -- including North Carolina -- breaking tradition is breaking the law. "It's the 'Living in Sin' statute, which is what most people know it as," explained criminal attorney (luật sư) Stephanie Goldsborough, Esq. with Dummit Fradin law firm.

"On top of that" nghĩa là gì?

'On top of that' = trên cả điều đó -> ngoài ra, thêm vào đó.

Ví dụ
That means Bitcoin miners (người đào Bitcoin) are spending half a million dollars an hour to keep the network running. Which seems a lot but is still lower than the $750,000 that they can take home in block rewards (with transaction fees on top of that).

“People seem to believe we could see some progress in the trade negotiations with China,” the “Mad Money” host said. “Personally, I’m skeptical ... but hope springs eternal. And, on top of that, there’s a belief that the Federal Reserve has no choice but to cut interest rates (cắt giảm lãi suất) after Friday’s not-so-hot employment number.”

When you become a development executive, you go from being what’s known as an internal (nội bộ) executive to an external (đối ngoại) one, and if you were the social kid in high school, this is the job for you. But if you were the bookish (người ham mê sách, mọt sách) kid who was happiest working intently with a couple of friends in the library, be careful what you wish for. Now I was out awkwardly attempting to socialize at lunches and meetings all day. On top of that, the pace of the process began to feel glacial (đóng băng). It could take ages—literally years—for a film to be made, and I got the sinking feeling that I was in the wrong job.

"Live in the past" nghĩa là gì?

Đang nhớ lại món chuối hôm qua vô cùng vừa miệng. Photo by Pixabay from Pexels

"Live in the past" = sống trong quá khứ -> hoài niệm, không buông bỏ được quá khứ.

Ví dụ
By standing in front of a closed window, our life is ruined. We begin to live like a corpse (xác chết). Many people come to know only when they are dying that they did not live life at all. People spend their entire life living in the past.

They recount (kể lại) the past. History helps us to make some adjustments now and to plan better forthe future by virtue of (bởi vì) what has happened before. We can tweak (điều chỉnh) some things to change the future. God did not intend for us to live in the past though.

When we live in the past, we are seeking to place blame and shame on others or our own person. Living in a state of blame and shame is much like being placed in a maximum security jail cell (nhà tù an ninh tuyệt đối). You are a captive (tù nhân) of the issues in your past.

"How the other half lives" nghĩa là gì?

Cuộc sống sang chảnh có làm em buồn chán? Photo by Oriana Polito from Pexels

"How the other half lives" = nửa còn lại sống như thế nào -> thực trạng của một tập thể khác ngoài tập thể của mình (thường là về những người giàu có hơn hoặc nghèo khổ hơn).

Ví dụ
Made In Chelsea gives us mere mortals (người thường) a look into how the other half lives and has transformed its very well-heeled (giàu có) cast into huge stars.

Or maybe it’s just an insatiable curiosity (tò mò vô độ) for how the other half lives, how they pursue dreams that become reality and how that reality changes their lives, often with enormous wealth – or at least corporate notoriety (nổi danh).

After a dominating week one win, UTSA got to see how the other half lives as the Baylor Bears dominated the Roadrunners from start to finish Saturday afternoon at McLane Stadium in Waco. Overall, it was a difficult game for UTSA. The Roadrunners struggled both offensively (tấn công), defensively (phòng thủ), and on special teams.

"Fly into a rage" nghĩa là gì?

Mị còn trẻ Mị muốn đi chơi Photo by Marcelo Chagas from Pexels

'Fly into a rage' có từ 'rage' là cơn giận dữ, thịnh nộ, cụm này có nghĩa là nổi cơn thịnh nộ, nổi xung, mất kiểm soát tính khí của mình.

Ví dụ
B&B spoilers say Liam will explode (nổ tung, nổi giận đùng đùng) at Thomas in his hospital room. He’ll fly into a rage over all the pain Thomas caused and perhaps suggest they’d all be better off if he were dead.

I worked closely with writers and directors, hunkering down (bền bỉ, nghiêm túc) in a room and going over material scene by scene, helping to make changes the studio wanted without having the writers, who often felt protective of their material, fly into a rage or threaten to quit the project;

“I thought I was crazy for many years. Little noises would make me just fly into a rage,” said Derrol Murphy. “People don’t understand it and I can’t explain it. It’s affected relationships, especially people I’ve been dating and family members, because you take it out on the people closest to you because you think they should understand.”

“A more realistic outcome, as a commenter pointed out, would have been for Oberyn to win, Cersei to fly into a rage, and chaos (hỗn loạn) to ensue, maybe Oberyn misses Tywin with a spear (giáo mác), etc. “Instead what happened seemed to just be done for shock value and to shoehorn in a vintage GOT moment”. Moreover, the theorist explains Oberyn should have been allowed more screen time and character development.

"Cast of thousands" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Yogendra Singh from Pexels

"Cast of thousands" = nhiều cá nhân, đám đông lớn lên đến hàng nghìn. Thuật ngữ bắt nguồn từ Hollywood, trong các quảng cáo cho các bộ phim quy mô lớn như Ben-Hur (1926) có dàn diễn viên khổng lồ.

Ví dụ
We have like a cast of thousands here, so servicing everybody, it's been an interesting and welcome challenge.

We had a cast of thousands because you didn't have to pay anyone because they were in school, and it was a big hit for all of four days.

If Bombay Rose doesn’t quite boast (khoe khoang) a cast of thousands, this can only be because Rao’s hand finally cramped up (bị kẹp, bó) from drawing.

In China, nearly 1.4 billion people live in 9.6 million square kilometers of geographical, cultural, and economic diversity. In a nation this vast and complex (rộng lớn và phức tạp), it is vital to have the big picture. Thanks to a cast of thousands, we have that picture today.

"See which way the cat jumps" nghĩa là gì?

"Alo, ừ, em đến ngay đi, nó đang ngồi chờ em ngay giữa đường cao tốc đây này!"
Photo by Humphrey Muleba from Burst

"See which way the cat jumps" (xem mèo nhảy đường nào) là thành ngữ dùng để chỉ động thái vẫn chờ đợi mà chưa đưa ra quyết định cho đến khi (chúng ta) có thêm thông tin về kết quả hoặc về kế hoạch hoặc ý kiến của người khác. Cụm từ này chủ yếu được dùng ở Úc.

Ví dụ
Let us keep our fingers crossed and see which way the cat jumps. Without clear political belief, no effective representation can be made.

Is hydrogen a safe fuel for your fleet (tàu/xe)?
So far, only Asian car manufacturers are truly convinced of that: Hyundai, Honda and Toyota. Other OEMs are waiting to see which way the cat jumps and prefer putting their money on battery-powered (năng lượng pin) vehicles and plug-in hybrids (xe lai sạc điện) to reach emission (khí thải) targets.

Media companies all over the world are looking for new business models. Nobody seems to have an answer to the question of how to pay for sustainable journalism in the future. Only large companies dare to take the risk, because it is difficult to predict the feasibility (tính khả thi) of each new experiment. Others wait to see which way the cat jumps, or cluster themselves around new (smaller) online initiatives that rely on citizen journalists or freelancers for content, and on small ads and their readers’ goodwill (sự tín nhiệm) for revenue (lợi tức).

"Think out loud" = nghĩ thành tiếng -> thổ lộ hoặc nói thành lời suy nghĩ của chính mình.

Ví dụ
He likes thinking out loud, which is why he likes teaching design.

"We were very concerned to hear the Taoiseach (thủ tướng của Ireland) think out loud and concede (thừa nhận) the point that there might be checks anywhere on the island of Ireland," she told media on Saturday.

So honey now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I'm thinking out loud
Maybe we found love right where we are
(Bài hát "Thinking out loud" của ca sĩ Ed Sheeran)

"Get the hang of something" = hiểu cách làm -> học cách làm một việc gì đó đúng đắn, đặc biệt khi nó không dễ dàng và rõ ràng.

Ví dụ
She would never get the hang of this new country.

The YouTube star, who is paired up (bắt cặp) with AJ Pritchard, hope she can get the hang of it, but prefers to perform ‘sassy’ (dữ dằn) routines like a tango or Paso Doble.

Pokémon Masters is the latest game in the series to hit mobile phones, and it’s quite different from some of the other Pokémon games we’ve played thus far (đến chừng này). Rather than focus solely (duy nhất) on developing and evolving your monsters, you also collect a roster (bảng phân công) of famous trainers that increase in power alongside their partner Pokémon. For combat, that means battles with several trainers controlling their own Pokémon at once, and keeping track of everything can be difficult for newcomers. We’ve collected our best Pokémon Masters tips and tricks so that you can get the hang of the game and become “the best there ever was” in no time.

"Go to bed with the sun" nghĩa là gì?

Hoàng hôn nơi xứ lạ. Photo by Antonio Lainez

"Go to bed with the sun" = Đi ngủ cùng với mặt trời -> Đi ngủ rất sớm từ lúc mặt trời lặn.

Ví dụ
“We wake up with the sun and go to bed with the sun,” Birdsong says. “Everything is an adventure (cuộc phiêu lưu). Even finding parking is fun whether at a scenic (thuộc cảnh vật) location or a spot downtown. We love parking outside coffee shops. That’s a great place to wake up to.”

Diurnal creatures (tạo vật ban ngày), those that stay awake during the day, are programmed to ‘go to bed with the sun’. Our biological clock (đồng hồ sinh học), which is based on a 24-hour day, controls our daily alternating (sự luân phiên) between wakefulness and sleep.

Deep in the lush (sum suê, tươi tốt) rainforests of Bolívar, a Venezuelan state near the border (biên giới) of Brazil, the ancient Yekwana tribe thrives in villages built along the tea-colored Caura River. There, life and land are intertwined (quấn vào nhau). The villagers wake up and go to bed with the sun, bathe in the river without soap, and mostly eat cassava (cây sắn), fish, fruits, and honey.

"Take one's chances" = tận dụng cơ hội -> liều mình làm việc gì đó dù cho có khả năng thất bại.

Ví dụ
I know it’s unlikely I’ll become a pop singer but I don’t care—I’m taking my chances anyway.

“I have dreamt of that, but first I have to prove myself & prepare. If I decide somewhere along the way to take my chances as a manager, my link, my commitment, my passion with Liverpool is there.

During the annual Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, two homemade pressure-cooker (nồi áp suất) bombs detonated (phát nổ) 12 seconds and 210 yards (190m) apart at 2:49 p.m., near the finish line of the race, killing three people and injuring several hundred others, including 16 who lost limbs (tay chân). We can’t fight a bomb. I would far rather take my chances with a concealed (giấu) handgun against a psycho shooter than being in fear of a bomb blowing up a restaurant, movie theater or concert.

"Head for the setting sun" = Hướng về phía mặt trời lặn -> Đi về hướng tây để trốn tránh trách nhiệm/pháp luật.

Ví dụ
A man was taken to the hospital after he crashed his motorcycle while trying to head for the setting sun.

After losing visual contact, police received a report of a car on fire, the same model and make of the car that was seen heading for the setting sun.

A Calhoun County man was shot several times by sheriff’s deputies and a police officer early Monday morning after he headed for the setting sun to turn off his vehicle before ramming (nện chặt) into one of the deputies, authorities said.

"Have the sun in (one's) eyes" = Có ánh nắng chiếu vào mắt ai nên không thấy rõ -> Bị say nên mắt không nhìn thấy rõ và bị lờ đờ.

Ví dụ
“Arian made a nice pick so that every time I would serve, I'd have the sun in my eyes,” Montefolka said. “So it was very hard to serve.

Halbauer added “my brother was there, his wife was there and we know what we saw. My only regret is that I didn’t act sooner and get my phone out quicker and didn’t have the sun in my eyes, because the thing was much closer before I started videoing.”

He was not distracted (mất tập trung, phân tâm) by a cell phone and did not have the sun in his eyes, according to the facts. Court also heard that trees along the southeast quadrant (thước đo độ) of the intersection (sự giao nhau) would not have obstructed (che khuất) his visibility (tầm nhìn rõ) if he had stopped before entering the intersection.

"Cast the first stone" nghĩa là gì?

"Cast/throw the first stone" = ném viên đá đầu tiên -> người đầu tiên chỉ trích, tấn công.

Ví dụ
Sought for comment, Panelo responded with Bible verses (câu nói trong Kinh thánh). “Thou shall not judge so that you shall not be judged. Those without sin (vô tội), cast the first stone,” he said.

And, looking up from the ground, he says: “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” At this moment, something that's pure cinema happened at the Mount of Olives: one by one, beginning with the elder, the scribes (kinh sư) departed.

Let the 'party girl' who has never gone 'one step too far' throw the first stone at Michaella McCollum - that last sambuca (một loại rượu Ý) that was a sambuca too many; flashing your boobs at a bouncer; going home with a 3/10; smuggling 11kg of cocaine out of Peru... We've all been there.

"Kick in the teeth" nghĩa là gì?

"Kick in the teeth" = cú đá vào răng -> nghĩa là điều thất vọng hoặc thất bại đáng xấu hổ.

Ví dụ
Just last week I wrote to the Secretary of State to tell him that reappointing (phục chức) Judith Thompson would be preposterous (vô lý hết sức) and a calculated kick in the teeth for innocent victims. Sadly he has decided to deliver that kick in the full knowledge of the hurt and offence it will cause.

The biggest horror of this latest kick in the teeth to the oil industry, this gazillionth suspension and delay, is that the government of our Canada didn’t even so much as show up to watch the proceedings. It didn’t intervene (can thiệp). It didn’t submit arguments. It wasn’t even there as a casual bystander (người ngoài cuộc).

The Blues were beaten in controversial circumstances (tình huống gây tranh cãi) in the North East on Saturday as Spennymoor Town took advantage of the referee's decision to hand Danny Livesey a bizarre (kì quái) second yellow card, the Moors winning the game at the very death. It was a kick in the teeth for the Blues and one that they felt was unjust, the 2-1 loss their first reverse of what has been up to now a very strong start to the season.

Ngọc Lân

"Get your teeth into" nghĩa là gì?

quyết tâm giành học bổng!!! Photo by: Lucrezia Carnelos on Unsplash

"Get one's teeth into" = ngập răng vào -> nghĩa là làm việc gì với rất nhiều năng lượng và nhiệt huyết.

Ví dụ
“I did my B Licence when I was at Norwich and I enjoyed that. It is something that, once you get your teeth into it, does come naturally. It is then just about how you get your point across to the players. “I’ve started helping Colin Nish with the 18s and if I can continue to do that throughout (xuyên suốt) the season, it puts me in a better place.

They possessed (sở hữu) a remarkable ingenuity (khéo léo) when it came to adapting (thích ứng) weapons to make them more formidable (ghê gớm), and while their efforts were not universally successful, there are plenty of subjects to get your teeth into. Craig Moore’s latest book offers us a perfect case in point.

Humankind will also feature plenty of tactical (chiến đấu) elements to get your teeth into. You’ll need to conquer (thống trị) multiple skills, like warfare, highly tactical battling, as well as building great cities that can withstand (chịu đựng) whatever your enemies might decide to throw at you. As the studio highlights, choose to build your city high up, and enemies will have a harder time trying to successfully siege against it.

"Cut your teeth" nghĩa là gì?

Mỗi lân thất bại là một lần tích lũy kinh nghiệm. Photo by: Pixabay on Pexels

"Cut one's teeth" = nhổ răng -> nghĩa là tích lũy kinh nghiệm từ khi còn trẻ.

Ví dụ
I'll say this at the start: If you're a novice gamer (game thủ học việc), this is not the one to cut your teeth on. There is a pretty extensive tutorial for new players that explains every basic activity in the game, but the basics can be boiled down to three activities.

“We’ve bucked the trend in fintech by focusing on profitability (có lợi nhuận) and long-term (dài hạn) sustainability (ổn định),” says Ambrose (pictured below), who, prior to joining Azimo two years ago, was an executive at PayPal. “The next big challenge is growing Azimo from a European to a global fintech business. We’re sanguine (đầy hi vọng) about this challenge because Europe — with its range of languages, currencies (tiền tệ) and payment habits (thói quen) — is a good place to cut your teeth before going global.”

“Those maps represent (đại diện) a very visceral, design-focused experience,” Infinity Ward’s Joel Emslie told Polygon in an interview. Because Gunfight uses random, predetermined (được xác định trước) load outs for each round, players are able to “experience a fully levelled up game in this tight compressed space,” he said. It’s also a good place to cut your teeth, since you’ll get to try out a slew of different weapon combos, and it’s easy to jump in and out without much fuss.
