"Lend color to" nghĩa là gì?

Giờ thì trông ai cũng giống nhau hết cả Photo by Shubham Bochiwal on Unsplash

'Lend color to something' = cho thêm màu vào cái gì -> thêm thắt thông tin hay chi tiết để nó trở nên đáng tin hoặc chắc chắn hơn; làm cho cái gì có thể thật hoặc có lẽ đúng.

Ví dụ
Having released eight albums during her 23-year career, Peyroux never compromises on the elements of excitement and mystery. She will offer an unforgettable night to the audience with her performance that will lend color to the PSM Jazz Festival.

They continue performing despite the temperature being as low as 13 degrees celsius. Obviously, during the dance, you cannot wear woolens (quần áo len) and coats which are taken off but the girls have danced energetically and once they are dancing they state that they do not feel cold at all. They lend color to a sporting event.

Among other things, the fish lend color to the vernacular (tiếng lóng, tiếng bản địa) of the region. “I use a pink squid, the smallest hootchie, and I put it in front of an anchovy (cá trồng). That little pink squid makes a big difference,” one guide told The Columbian. We’re not quite sure what that means, but we trust that it translates into some good eating.

"Talk down to (them)" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng có lên giọng với anh! Photo by Etty Fidele on Unsplash

"Talk down to (someone)" = nói xuống ai -> cụm từ này nghĩa là lên giọng kẻ cả (với ai).

Ví dụ
In addition, the young men said some said adults “talk down” to them, assuming they’re too young and wouldn’t understand complex subjects.

"And you're going to just— we're going to just talk down to them because you think that everybody who prays in those southern states and we're praying, dear God turn this hurricane, you think they're stupid?"

Most adults are open to learning, so don't treat them as if they're not. Give them useful information, help them succeed, don't talk down to them or make them feel like they aren't ready to tackle additional information.

"Talk back" nghĩa là nói lại, cãi lại.

Ví dụ
"I love working with plants. They don't talk back," Finch said with a laugh. "If you give them what they need, they return by growing and looking beautiful."

A friend of mine once went on a tirade about how she would not raise a disrespectful kid. “That’s just not happening,” she said. “He will not talk back. Respect is way too important to me, and I won’t put up with him being rude.”

If a couple of people in the audience are deeply offended, the comic may never know about it. But the Internet changed this relationship. The audience can do more than heckle a live performance; they can talk back, at length, and get a lot of people to listen.

'Not worth a red cent' = không đáng một đồng xu, từ 'red' ở đây ám chỉ màu của đồng tiền được làm bằng đồng -> vô dụng, không có giá trị; phá sản hoặc không một xu dính túi.

Ví dụ
I am amazed at how so much gobble goo can try to lead people to believe this is a good thing. I just feel greed is forthcoming no matter which direction we go. I am so tired of politicians telling me what to believe. But I also know my commentary is not worth a red cent to the “big corps”

“You don’t have to believe what I’m telling you,” says Gaon. “Feeling like a king is not directly related to your quality or your popularity or the power of your voice. Being a king is your own personal feeling even if you’re not worth a red cent.

Noting that Washington's main goal in calling for negotiations was to "impose their will and prove maximum pressure on the Iranian nation", he asserted (quả quyết) that this policy was "not worth a red cent to the Iranian nation." The Iranian government had announced on Monday that the Iranian and U.S. presidents would not meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings, according to Al-Mayadeen TV.

'Roll out the red carpet for someone' = trải thảm đỏ cho vị khách đặc biệt hoặc quan trọng -> chào đón ai đó một cách trịnh trọng, trang trọng trong một sự kiện, lễ kỉ niệm ...

Ví dụ
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will on Tuesday promise (hứa) to “roll out the red carpet” for American businesses with the most competitive tax rates in the hemisphere (bán cầu) after Britain leaves the European Union.

The regions have no choice but to roll out the red carpet, said Kerstin Mogdans, who coordinates help for returnees at the "Welcome Centre" in Magdeburg, and who took care of the Hoffmanns. "People won't move here at any price," she said. "That's why it's important for the companies to know that they need to present attractive offers."

DONALD Trump vowed (thề) to do a "magnificent" (tráng lệ, to lớn) trade deal with Boris Johnson after Brexit as he addressed the UN General Assembly in New York. The US President offered No10 a boost as he gushed (bộc lộ) about the Special Relationship - after Boris said he would "roll out the red carpet for our American friends".

"Talk dirty" nghĩa là gì?

Cái miệng bé xinh xắn, chỉ nói điều hay thôi! Photo by freestocks.org on Unsplash

"Talk dirty" nghĩa là ăn nói dơ bẩn, tục tĩu.

Ví dụ
“I like bad girls, like to talk dirty and be funny, so hit me up,” he wrote one, saying to another, “Thank you for the pics, they really got my juices flowing.”

Well, I can think of one time when a respectable, feminine woman is allowed to talk dirty, and that’s when she’s telling a man how good he is at sex. She can’t go too far, though, because then she just becomes a whore.

Talking dirty sounds like an easy thing to do but trust us when you tell you this: talking dirty is a skill that only a few can master. So, the chances are that when you talk dirty to a partner, you might end up making him or her feel disgusting rather than erotic. It needs a lot of practice and if you aren’t comfortable talking dirty, leave it only to the expert.

"A fool may give a wise man counsel" = Đôi khi kẻ ngu cũng có thể đưa ra lời khuyên cho người khôn -> Đừng quá tin vào lời khuyên của người khác.

Ví dụ
Sometimes, you should make up your mind (tự quyết định) and remember an old saying "A fool may give a wise man counsel" .

Why do you always believe in everything he says? Keep in mind that "A fool may give a wise man counsel", and never trust boys with all your hearts.

Do you think I should invite some experts (chuyên gia) to give me an excellent counsel to this project? Uhhh, no I don't. You should follow your strategies you made first, you know "A fool may give a wise man counsel", right?

'Give one gray hair' = cho ai thêm tóc bạc -> làm ai thêm lo lắng, căng thẳng, buồn bã (tới mức bạc cả tóc).

Ví dụ
“I told the kids after the game,” coach (huấn luyện viên) Thomas McGuire said, “they’re going to give me gray hair if we keep doing this.”

“The network and production company work together sometimes I think they cast people that give me gray hair. But, 99 percent of the home-owners are fantastic and wonderful and grateful and thankful as they can be. And then, there’s the 1 percent that are sometimes a pain,” Johnathan Scott told reporters.

“The sexy fidget spinner is going to give me gray hair,” says Quintana during a design meeting in her office with Chamberlain and senior marketing manager Erika Zeroulias, who had wrestled (đánh vật) a prototype of the costume — a skintight black mini dress under a fidget spinner-shaped piece of foam — over her office-appropriate shirtdress.

"Pink collar" nghĩa là gì?

Wow con người bận rộn, nhiều cuộc gọi nhỡ thế? Photo by Dalila Dalprat from Pexels

'Pink collar' chỉ những người có cổ áo màu hồng, một cách nói ẩn dụ cho ngành dịch vụ hoặc công nghiệp mà phần lớn nhân lực là nữ. Giống như 'blue collar' là những người làm công việc tay chân hay dùng sức lực, 'white collar' là những người làm công việc văn phòng, lao động trí óc nhiều hơn.

Ví dụ
Perhaps most moving to me is that the film is presented as feminist (chủ nghĩa nữ quyền), with a pink-collar working-class heart. (If you don’t think sex work is a women’s issue, honey, who do you think is doing this work?)

There are still more female business owners in certain fields — "pink collar" fields — such as arts, education and retail. Fields such as information technologies, wholesale trade, transportation and agriculture still have fewer women than the national average of female business owners.

The millennial protagonist (người giữ vai trò chủ đạo) of this short, intimate debut novel works as a carer in her hometown of Minneapolis. It’s strictly “pink-collar” labour, yet while her barista girlfriend throws herself into ambitious art projects at the end of each shift, Ella is happy to simply go home and cook dinner.

"Yesterday's man" nghĩa là gì?

"Yesterday's man" = Người đàn ông của hôm qua -> Chỉ đỉnh cao sự nghiệp của ai đã trôi qua, đặc biệt là những chính trị gia.

Ví dụ
This time at Hearts he's finished sixth twice, below teams with a fraction (một phần) of the same budget. But that's what you get with a yesterday's man.

It was Liverpool who had beaten them this time, 3-1 and in a manner that underlined just why their new manager was being hailed (réo, chào đón dồn dập) as a revolutionary (cuộc cách mạng) while Chelsea's old one was beginning to look like yesterday's man.

There are admittedly many influential Madrid figures who would advise Perez against that appointment again. The Bernabeu president was very close to the decision in March, only to back away, due to the counsel of many who insisted Mourinho is yesterday’s man.

"White man’s disease" = Căn bệnh người da trắng -> Không thể nhảy lên khi chơi bóng rổ/việc người đàn ông da trắng chiếm tỉ lệ cao/ưu thế trong các vụ tự tử.

Ví dụ
I did not have white man’s disease (laughs). I could get off the floor. Here’s a picture (from the Trojan annual, showing Marty skying to the rim (mép, vành) against Slayton).

Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora has white man's disease. Not certain about the extent of his affliction (nỗi đau đớn) but it's serious enough to note that Gusciora continues a United States Caucasian male policy of disregarding (sự coi nhẹ) suggestions made by African-Americans, Latinos, women and others.

There’s good things and bad things. H.I.V. has a history, at least in the United States, of being a gay white man’s disease. It’s not. And so we have a legacy (để lại, di sản) of shaking that off. Ownership (sở hữu) of this disease now goes beyond the initial population that — at least in the portrayal of the story — was most affected by it.

"Study up on" nghĩa là gì?

Mai thi rồi, nốt hôm nay thôi, huhu Photo by Pixabay on Pexels

'Study up on someone or something' = nghiên cứu tất cả mọi thứ về một ai hay cái gì đó trong một thời gian ngắn.

Ví dụ
Bears fans are anxiously awaiting the team's home opener against their biggest rivals (đối thủ) the Green Bay Packers Thursday, but before game day arrives in Chicago, fans may want to study up on their knowledge of what's been going on.

Study up on the candidates and their positions on issues you care about and see if they align (cùng hàng). Visit their websites to explore their policy positions, read independent analyses of their proposals, dig deeper into their records in elected office.

White House tells CNN to ‘study up on U.S. geography,’ and the gloves are off. First, President Trump, in a display Pete Buttigieg called a “national embarrassment,” trotted out a doctored week-old image in an attempt to justify his claim that Alabama was potentially in the path of Hurricane Dorian.

The event, which began with a walkout of classes at 9 a.m., was part of the international Fridays for Future climate strike. Beginning on the student union lawn, it featured stations to make protest signs, read climate-related books, study up on individual issues and take photos. Around noon, speeches addressed climate change (biến đổi khí hậu) topics that often go undiscussed or overlooked.

Ví dụ
She could talk a good game, but you never quite felt like she was telling you the whole story — all that money from Wall Street and the big corporations going to that shady foundation.

“My observation about many of those Cornish MPs is that they talk a good game but when it actually comes to the vote a lot of them, despite what they thought and said, voted for Mrs May’s dreadful withdraw agreement.

"What makes a great manager is that you have to have a great mouthpiece. You got to be able to talk. If you can talk a good game and you've got some guys behind you that can back you up, that makes you even greater," said Long.

"Sweet talk someone into" có nghĩa là nói ngọt, dùng lời tâng bốc, nịnh bợ để thuyết phục ai làm gì.

Ví dụ
If you and your crush have never met before, things can be slightly tricky. It can be hard to find out their likes and dislikes from just what they post online. In this case, be as open with them as you can and use your words to sweet talk them into considering the date.

Difficult women will not allow you to play games, mess around, or disrespect their work, ideas, and overall womanhood. You can’t sweet talk them into getting something at work. You don’t get to come into her life, with intentions, that you are going to have things easy, and waiting for you.

“There are a few cases in the various JNNURM colonies in the city, where people have sold one of their kidneys for a price between ₹4 and ₹5 lakh. The job of a middleman is to identify such vulnerable candidates and then sweet-talk them into selling their kidney,” said Pragada Vasu of Association of Urban and Tribal Development (AUTD), an NGO.

"Small talk" = cuộc nói chuyện nhỏ -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đoạn hội thoại ngắn, đôi khi là để khơi ra cho một cuộc đối thoại dài hơn, nhưng đôi khi chỉ là những mẩu chuyện tán gẫu ngắn nơi công sở hay mấy lời chào hỏi xã giao giữa những người ít quen biết.

Ví dụ
Making small talk with coworkers can be anxiety-inducing at times, but those who can do it effectively often are better positioned for success, Lindsay Mannering writes for the New York Times, offering five tips of how to do it right.

Whether you consider yourself good at small talk or not, it's an essential professional skill that can take you surprisingly far in the workplace. In a recent New York Times piece on mastering the art of small talk in the office, writer Lindsay Mannering outlines how to hone your skills.

Many people treat small talk quite instrumentally – as a way to “win friends and influence people.” And that can certainly be the case. But I find that it’s much more effective –and, frankly, easier – to think of small talk as a real, authentic way to construct the building blocks of an actual, meaningful future relationship.

"A man cannot serve two masters" nghĩa là gì?

"A man cannot serve two masters" = Chẳng ai làm tôi hai chủ cả/một người không thể phục vụ hai chủ -> Mục tiêu, nỗ lực và sự trung thành của ai đó phân tán ở nhiều nơi, nhiều mục đích, nhiều công việc thì sẽ dẫn đến không có cái nào có kết quả thành công cả.

Ví dụ
That was because "a man cannot serve two masters. The Senators are not elected by the people. They are elected by 'the interests.'".

Daniel Wagner boarded a plane Monday for Sweden, a day after his graduation party, full of excitement for what awaited him in Europe. But there was also, maybe for the first time, a sense of loss (cảm giác mất mát, thất bại) amid (ở giữa) the realization that a man cannot serve two masters. And, right now, music is his master.

“It wasn’t my age that made me quit,” Pihos said. “I’ve always kept in top condition (thể trạng tốt) and I never smoke or drank. I know I have a couple years of football left but I’ve reached that stage in life when a man cannot serve two masters. I think I’ve found myself in the business world. It is unlikely to change anytime soon.

“Whatcha Gonna Do when shit hits the fan, take it like a man or snitch (hớt lẻo) like a bitch,” Shyne raps. Shortly after his debut album dropped, the world found out Shyne’s answer to the question: take it like a man. "As brown as a berry" nghĩa là gì?

Để có một làn da nâu Photo by The Lazy Artist Gallery from Pexels

'(as) brown as a berry' = làn da rám nắng.

Ví dụ
Rev. Charles S. Aves, rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, this city, returned home this morning from his trip to the other side of the great big pond. He looks rugged (vạm vỡ) and is as brown as a berry, indicating that Ocean breezes and European skies were conducive to health as well as pleasure.

We've been shooting in Montreal, and then we were shooting in Portofino in Italy, which was exquisite, and now we are in Lake Como, which is just as beautiful, and it's been just a really wonderful job. We're lucky — it's not always as glamorous as this. But it's the summer and we're in some of the most beautiful places in Europe, so I've been making the most of it. I'm as brown as a berry.

I never used sunblock (kem chống nắng). Ever. And in my 20s, I kept my glow year-long with the help of tanning beds a few times a week. “You’re brown as a berry,” my grandma would say. “You look so healthy.” It’s a good thing Grandma can’t see me now. Two weeks ago, I met my reconstructive surgeon (phẫu thuật tái tạo). Last week, I visited him again, and then again. He removed the lesion, then took margins – and then more margins – of healthy tissue.

"In a brown study" nghĩa là gì?

Người cô độc Photo by Burst

'In a brown study' có từ 'brown' ban đầu được dùng với nghĩa đơn giản là 'dark' = tối, sâu thẳm hay nghiêm túc -> trầm ngâm suy nghĩ.

Ví dụ
After the decision made by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on November 27, the parishes (giáo dân, xứ đạo) of the Archdiocese of Russian Orthodox churches in Western Europe are in a brown study on their future. However, they have no choice, really.

“Your wits (trí thông minh) are gone wool-gathering. You are in a brown study. Your brains are asleep, and you seem bewildered (bối rối, lúng túng). The allusion is to village children sent to gather wool from hedges; while so employed they are absent, and for a trivial purpose. To be wool-gathering is to be absent-minded, but to be so to no good purpose.”

Brown study is a splendid old expression for gloominess. In the 17th and 18th centuries, at much the same time as people started to say they felt blue, the colour brown was used to refer to a rather less miserable (đau khổ) state. Samuel Johnson defined brown study as "gloomy meditations" while Webster's Dictionary in the US said it was "serious reverie, thoughtful absent-mindedness". The OED defines brown study as "A state of mental abstraction or musing (mơ màng, trầm ngâm)", which is probably what your mother had in mind.

"Yellow press" nghĩa là gì?

'Yellow press' có từ 'yellow' là giật gân -> những báo chuyên giật title, chủ yếu muốn thu hút sự quan tâm của độc giả, còn sự thật được đưa tin chỉ là thứ yếu.

Ví dụ
Murthy tried to suggest that the media -- the prensa amarilla or "yellow press," he called them, claiming to have just learned the phrase -- was partly to blame, using the oldest trick in the book by reaching for the easiest external enemy.

Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan’s spokesperson (người phát ngôn) Areg Kochinyan is ruling out the possibly of information leaks from the Security Council meetings and labeled the recent media rumors (tin đồn) as manipulations (lôi kéo, vận động) by “low-class yellow press”.

From Nunberg I learned that “Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne used the [exclamation point] freely. But by the late 19th century, it had become the staple of lurid (khủng khiếp) novels and the sensational (giật gân) yellow press, whose printers called it a screamer, a shriek or a bang.”

We spoke with Abdel-Hadi on the roof of a residential building in Amman, a low, sandstone-colored building of the kind seen all over the city, complete with a water tank and clotheslines on the roof. He says he would never dare to fly a rainbow flag from his balcony. "I don't want any problems with my neighbors or visits from the yellow press or even the police," he says.
