"Never hear the end of it" nghĩa là gì?

Khi cuộc sống quá đủ mệt mỏi. Photo by NeONBRAND

"Never hear the end of it" = Không dứt được nỗi bận tâm phiền toái -> Liên tục phải nghe những điều phiền phức, khó chịu và bực bội.

Ví dụ
If you could go back in time and block somebody who would it be? (from @OGwakarican). It would be Michael Jordan, just so I could never hear the end of it.

It’s not just that, had the vote totals been the other way around, we’d never hear the end of it. It’s that the Leftism of the media has fashioned a national ethos (đặc tính).

In the build-up to the recent Rugby World Cup final, there was much discussion here in Wales as to who to support – England or South Africa. It may seem logical to support your neighbours, a country with whom we share so much and have so much in common (có nhiều điểm chung), however, a frequent complaint is that if England were to win then we would ‘never hear the end of it.’ As the joke goes – England won the football World Cup in 1966 and we still haven’t heard the end of it.

"Low-end" = Giới hạn thấp -> Rẻ hơn và chất lượng kém hơn khi mà so sánh với các sản phẩm cao cấp hoặc nhãn hàng nổi tiếng.

Ví dụ
One thing you won't see much of here, however, are laptops with rock-bottom doorbuster prices (giá của hàng quảng cáo bán đến từng nhà) and very low-end Intel or AMD CPUs.

It all comes down to the products used to make them. The majority of low-end yoga mats (thảm) are made with polyvinyl chloride foam (PVC), a material that can lead to a lot of issues with your mat down the road.

SiTime, the fabless producer of silicon timing systems being spun out of MegaChips, raised $56 million by offering 4.3 million shares at $13, the low end of the range of $13 to $15, to command a market value of $186 million. SiTime plans to list on the Nasdaq under the symbol SITM. Barclays and Stifel acted as lead managers on the deal.

"The living end" nghĩa là gì?

Chuyến du lịch đáng nhớ. Photo by  Court Cook

"The living end" = Giới hạn sự sống -> Chỉ điều gì là nhất, là số một, đạt tới đỉnh điểm cao nhất. Cụm danh từ này dùng cho câu tích cực lẫn tiêu cực. Ví dụ, thích hoặc ghét ai/điều gì nhất.

Ví dụ
Folks talk about it like it's the living end, but we just weren't that wowed by culatello. It doesn't have the unctuous texture (bề mặt thấm dầu) of a good prosciutto (thịt giăm bông).

To express surprise and joy over how amazing something is, you might say it's "the living end." As in "this lemonade is the living end" or "this song is the living end!" Folks (mọi người) may not know what you're talking about, but that's half the fun.

On the way back to my hotel, I walked through a park and entered a small pavilion (lều lớn) filled with books in many languages. A sign in English read, “Take a book, leave a book.” I smiled. The first Portuguese ships that spotted Madeira in 1420 thought it was the end of the earth. I just thought it was the living end, thanks to sledging, magnificent (tráng lệ, nguy nga) gardens, luxurious accommodations, levadas dripping with moss (rêu), delicious fresh fish, and even free books in a public park. The title of the song “Have Some Madeira, M’Dear” delivers good advice, but an even better recommendation would be to drink the wine while also visiting this unforgettable island.

"Jump in at the deep end" nghĩa là gì?

Có những người cứ thích tỏ ra nguy hiểm. Photo by Josiah Gardner

"Jump in at the deep end" = Nhảy vào đáy sâu -> Thử làm một điều khó khăn và thách thức mà không cần sự hỗ trợ hay giúp đỡ và chưa có kinh nghiệm về việc đó.

Ví dụ
If you are making your first steps in gambling in Macau, there are several rules you need to know before you jump in at the deep end. Here are some of the guidelines you need to keep in mind.

Katie Evans likes to be challenged. Whether it was leading marketing on Gourmet Burger Kitchen's brand turnaround or founding her own business, the marketing director of Burger King UK likes to jump in at the deep end.

A large proportion of society right now expects to see a determined political class that will work on solving their problems. The government made a good early impression and created expectations (kỳ vọng). Now it’s time to jump in at the deep end.

"It'll end in tears" nghĩa là gì?

Nước mắt cầu vồng. Photo by Christian Sterk

"It'll end in tears" = Kết thúc trong nước mắt -> Lâm vào kết cục thảm bại và gây sự đau buồn.

Ví dụ
Katie Price warned 'it'll end in tears' as son Harvey fails to wear his seat belt (thắt dây an toàn) correctly. Harvey suffers from Prader-Willi syndrome.

To avoid ingrown (mọc vào bên trong) toenails (móng chân), clip your nails straight across in a line and gently file the edges. Never clip right into the sidewalls, it'll end in tears.

He leans in for a kiss but they’re interrupted (bị phá đám, gián đoạn) by the arrival of Gemma’s mum, Bernie, who reveals she’s about to be made homeless and needs money. When Gemma offers her the cash (tiền mặt) from the charity collection, Chesney is left appalled (bị kinh sợ). Chesney refuses to hand over the charity money to Bernie and when Paul (Peter Ash) calls in the Rovers he is horrified to find Bernie there, tells Gemma it’ll end in tears and storms out.

"Whip someone/something into shape" = quất roi (đánh) cho ai vào khuôn phép -> nghĩa là chấn chỉnh ai đó; khiến người/ai đó trở nên ở điều kiện/tình trạng tốt hơn.

Ví dụ
If looking to change the diet completely, slimmers (người nhịn ắn) can follow a structured diet plan to kick start the weight loss journey. A popular diet is the low carb (thức ăn có carbonhydrat) and high fat keto, or ketogenic, plan which is thought to burn fat. On this, slimmers can whip into shape by eating less than 25 grams of net carbs a day to enter into a fat-burning state called ketosis.

It became apparent (rõ ràng) for us that we needed to update this and whip into shape for a production-ready product. As difficult as this policy (chính sách) is, I think it makes it clear now for everyone what the policy is on a universal basis as opposed to trying your luck on a case-by-case basis.

Ruddock was one of a group of former (cựu) footballers Redknapp cobbled together to whip into shape for a two part ITV documentary called Harry's Heroes.

"In at the deep end" nghĩa là gì?

Có công tập bơi, có ngày nên sao. Photo by  Li Yang

"In at the deep end" = Trong đáy sâu -> Đang trong cảnh vô cùng khó khăn, nguy hiểm và rắc rối, rất khó tự cứu mình ra khỏi đó.

Ví dụ
Their first warm-up (khởi động) game against Russia on 10 January is looming as an important pre-season test for a Cell C Sharks squad (đội) that will be going in at the deep end when the Vodacom Super Rugby season starts a few weeks later.

When a general election is called, a chill runs through most politicians and their teams, as they know what it means for the coming weeks and months ahead. Having been elected in a by-election in 2016, I was certainly plunged (bị lao xuống) in at the deep end of the political pool and had to learn to swim pretty quickly.

In a statement (phát biểu) last night, he said: “After taking some time I’ve came to a decision to retire. “I’ve had a great career and achieved so much. “I have loved every minute of boxing, it has been my life for the past 21 years. “I achieved my dream of becoming an Olympian and getting to carry the Irish flag at the Olympic Games opening ceremony. “Those moments were the proudest of my career. “Professional boxing was never a dream of mine but I tried and threw myself in at the deep end straight away. “It didn’t work out but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

"Hold end of the bargain" nghĩa là gì?

Nhân dịp BLACK FRIDAY. Photo by Allie Smith

"Hold (up) (one's) end of the bargain" = Cứ giữ như kết quả của sự thương lượng -> Làm như đã được hứa trong cuộc thỏa thuận hoặc thương lượng, thực hiện với điều mà mình đã đồng ý.

Ví dụ
That being said, you cannot abuse or take advantage of (lợi dụng) them whatsoever. As an indie director, you have to hold up your end of the bargain by ensuring that your cast and crew are always respected, safe and listened to. All of these elements (yếu tố) are what make a creative and cohesive (dính kết) family unit on set.

“We made commitments (sự cam kết) to all three of our kids,” Khalfani-Cox told Business Insider. “We’ve told them, essentially: ‘Your job, first and foremost, is be a good person, and be a good student. If you hold up your end of the bargain and do the right things, this is what we’re prepared to do for you: We will buy you your first house, and we will pay for your college.'”

If you lease (thuê) a car, and do not hold up your end of the bargain when it comes to maintenance (sự bão dưỡng) and insurance (bảo hiểm), the car's owner can do it for you and charge you for it. If you return the car at the end of the lease and it has more than normal wear and tear, you do not just forfeit a deposit (bồi thường tiền đặt cọc) – you also have to pay to bring it up to spec (sự đầu cơ kinh doanh).

"Follow me to the ends of the Earth" nghĩa là gì?

Ta cứ mãi đi tìm đi tìm? Photo by  Ian Froome

"Follow (one) to the ends of the Earth" = Theo ai đến tận cùng của trái đất -> Đi theo ai đến bất kì nơi nào kể cả những vùng xa xôi hoặc không thể đến được.

Ví dụ
"But I started from nothing and built this fan base and they'll follow me to the ends of the Earth. They know we're in this journey together."

“The weight doesn’t bother him now but it will as he gets older, so it was a case of getting on top of it so he doesn’t have problems down the track. Jasper helped me through a difficult part of my life and would follow me to the ends of the earth.

Mitchell and I slide into a booth (phòng điện thoại công cộng) at The Cheesecake Factory, a ubiquitous presence (có ở nơi nơi, đầy rẫy) in US malls that, despite its name, is neither a factory nor an especially convenient place to buy cheesecake. As Mitchell orders the chain’s signature Glamburger, I confront (đối mặt) him with my million-dollar question. Sure, his creature can follow me to the ends of the Earth, but what if I board a plane?

"End up with" nghĩa là gì?

"End up with (someone or something" = Kết thúc cùng với ai/điều gì -> Đi cùng với ai một cách bất đắc dĩ hoặc vì thiếu người; cuối cùng cũng sở hữu hoặc đạt được điều gì; có được ai hoặc điều gì để cùng đồng hành.

Ví dụ
ADD two famous faces together and you end up with a third. Katy Docherty has done the celebrity sums for you.

We end up with children who don't know what they are being asked to do because the complexity is beyond their developmental maturation (sự trưởng thành).

For under €800,000, you'll end up with a very large period property that is right beside the city and only 500m from the new National Children's Hospital at St James's Walk.

“With the obvious candidates now spoken for...ETFC could end up with someone who isn’t necessarily an online broker,” said Bilson. Ryan of JMP said a bank that is pushing into consumer finance could benefit from E-Trade’s very strong deposit (tiền cọc) base, which generates (phát sinh, tạo ra) about $60 billion in deposits each quarter.

"End up in the knacker's yard" nghĩa là gì?

Lũ bạn già. Photo by  Alex Blăjan

"End up in the knacker's yard" = Vào sân/khu của người chuyên mua ngựa già để giết thịt -> Vào trong trạng thái bị phả hủy hoặc thất bại do không còn giá trị sử dụng hoặc quá lỗi thời. Câu thành ngữ liên quan đến việc những con ngựa già hoặc bị thương bị đưa vào nhà mổ hoặc lò mổ để giết lấy thịt.

Ví dụ
You end up in the knacker's yard like that poor horse Boxer in that book Animal Farm. Bosses take better care of their tools than their men.

She said: “We have been told they have to be taken off by next Monday or the council is going to lift them. We would then have to pay £2,000 per horse to get them back, otherwise, if they can’t sell them, they will probably end up in the knacker’s yard.

After short careers on the track, most end up in the knacker’s yard, on their way to cans of dog food. And if you disapprove of training animals to perform in the circus (biểu diễn xiếc), why not attack the posh pretentions of dressage (sự dạy ngựa), the equine (có tính chất ngựa) ballet included in the Olympics?

"End up at" nghĩa là gì?

In the middle of nowhere. Photo by Casey Fyfe

"End up at (something or some place)" = Đến một nơi nào đó, thường là không theo dự định; cuối cùng cũng đến được nơi nào đó hoặc chạm tới điều gì.

Ví dụ
“Santa Claus will lead us on the ride from the Honda Dealer and end up at the party at Harley Davidson,” Johnson said. “Last year, we helped raised enough money to help 300 families.”

The rapid fall of Bitcoin price this morning seems to bear out Vettese’s thesis of heightened activity. Within six minutes, Bitcoin price lost 4.2% of its value (approximately $330) to end up at $7252.32 per coin.

Jose Mourinho is unlikely to end up at Arsenal, says Glen Johnson, but the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss is expected to “cherry-pick” his next job after Christmas. The Portuguese (người Bồ Đào Nha) has been out of work since being sacked (bị sa thải) by the Red Devils in December 2018. Some 12 months on and he is being linked with high-profile (có danh tiếng, tầm cỡ) posts across Europe.

"The end justifies the means" nghĩa là gì?

Đời còn lắm quanh co. Photo by  Tim Trad

"The end justifies the means" = Kết cục/mục đích biện minh cho phương tiện/phương cách -> Chấp nhận dùng cả phương cách bất chính để đạt mục đích.

Ví dụ
Like mother like son, right? Michael unquestionably (mù quáng) has an affinity (mối quan hệ) for power, and he definitely lives by the motto (khẩu hiệu, phương châm) "the end justifies the means". He's willing to get his hands dirty, and he's pretty obsessed (rất ám ảnh) with coming out on top.

The popular phrase "the end justifies the means" is often used in politics, business and in most social activities. This phrase, mistakenly attributed (quy cho) to the writer Machiavelli in his famous work "The Prince," emphasizes that the objective of the action is more important or justifies the means or ways of achieving that objective.

In this point he made a difference with conservatives (đảng bảo thủ), who tend to have more “scruples” (tính thận trọng, cân nhắc) over their political tactics and “rarely feel that the end justifies the means. And this is as it should be,” he said. “But there is no getting around the fact that this puts conservatives at a disadvantage when facing progressive holy war, especially when doing so under the weight of a hyper-partisan (phe ủng hộ quá kích động) media,” he concluded.

"End game" nghĩa là gì?

Game's over. Photo by Anne Nygård

"End game" = Kết thúc trò chơi -> Giai đoạn cuối của một quá trình, sự phát triển hoặc hoạt động; thường là ngụ ý về sự kết thúc của một ván cờ nào đó.

Summit League champs SD State — Arizona Football is in the end game now, just beat ASU to end 2019 — Arizona Football takes on No.

An end game for the raging trade war (chiến tranh thương mại) between the world’s two largest economies (hai cường quốc có nền kinh tế lớn nhất thế giới) is not in sight, a leading US-China business expert has warned.

At this stage, Mr Latter admitted, the FCA does not know precisely how the LIBOR ‘end-game’ will play out. It may be that for all 35 LIBOR currency-tenor (kỳ hạn tiền tệ) pairs a final cessation (sự chấm dứt) date can be announced comfortably in advance (được thông báo trước), and transition away from each of these rates can be substantially completed in an orderly manner before then.

"End my days" nghĩa là gì?

Bà nội trong ký ức của tôi. Photo by The Joy of Film

"End (one's) days" = Những ngày cuối đời -> Dành những ngày còn lại trên đời tại ở một nơi hoặc làm những hoạt động cụ thể nào đó.

Ví dụ
Hudson's Bay Co. Governor Sir George Simpson predicted that he'd end his days in dissolution (sự rã rời, tan biến) and madness; Ogden proved him wrong.

No, not at all. Honestly, I fully expected to end my days in the San Fernando Valley where I was born and raised. I’ve been the regional bishop (giám mục) there for three years, and I love, I love “El Jefe.” I do. I love Archbishop Gomez. You can put that in writing.

In order to thrive in every area of my life, I find it important to end my days with dedicated personal time once the kids are in bed. Having a spouse (vợ chồng) who travels during the week means that my evenings are truly my own, which allows me a little extra space to practice self care and prepare for the following day.

"Cannot see further than the end of my nose" nghĩa là gì?

Đường còn dài còn lắm chông gai. Photo by William Bossen

"Cannot see further than the end of (one's) nose" = Không thể thấy xa hơn ngoài đỉnh mũi -> Không thể thấy trước, nhận biết trước những vấn đề hoặc rắc rối trước mắt hoặc sắp xảy ra tức khắc.

Ví dụ
'It is reasonable to be concerned that one or more of the children who currently claim to enjoy filming may at some point suffer negative consequences (hậu quả tiêu cực) they cannot see further than the end of their nose now as young teenagers.

On being asked if the cases like Ayodhya drag the Supreme Court in the political web, Justice SA Bobde said, "It is a landmark (giới hạn, bước ngoặc) case but not political. It may have some ramifications (sự phân nhánh) that we cannot see further than the end of our nose now..."

Hemp plants (cây gai dầu) are known for their medicinal (làm thuốc) value containing an extract (chiết xuất) called cannabidiol, or CBD, which doesn't produce a high like the THC found in marijuana (cần sa). “This is a later strain (căng ra) than some of the strains out there.” Kodydek said. “But I cannot see further than the end of my nose.”

"Strung-out shape" nghĩa là gì?

Cười bên ngoài nhưng khóc bên trong. Photo by: Sydney Sims on Unsplash

"Strung-out shape" -> nghĩa là tình trạng kiệt sức tinh thần, đặc biệt do stress, căng thẳng, thiếu ngủ.

Ví dụ
"We're all in strung out shape. But stay frosty." The Demodogs' attack might seem familiar. It's just like this raptor scene in "Jurassic Park."

Look - I'm going to have to back up and apologize, here. I'm ...well, we are all... things have been bad, since the Malgothiel discovery. I apologize for the informal nature of this Entry for the 'Masamun'ael' entity. But we're all in pretty strung-out shape.

The effects, perils (hiểm họa) in outer space and in shadowy corners, quite overwhelm the skimpy (thiếu thốn) script, which is loaded with gibberish uttered with authority: ''Stand by to initiate release sequencer.'' When somebody says something sensible like ''we're all in strung-out shape,'' it sounds like a gag (lời nói đùa).
