“Get the boot” nghĩa là gì?

Thu về... Photo by Fidel Fernando

“Get the boot” = cho ăn dép/cho ăn đá -> nghĩa là bị sa thải, đuổi ra hoặc bị bồ đá/chia tay.

Ví dụ
“If you haven’t and just lazy enough and you don’t come down to do it, you should get the boot I guess,” Southworth said.

‘Let me be clear.’ Sen. Sandoval should quit top committee post — or get the boot. Sandoval has not been charged with (không chịu trách nhiệm với) any wrongdoing (việc làm sai phạm), but Pritzker argued he should not preside over a committee so heavily involved with the capital bill.

Rep. Max Rose and his congressional rival (đối thủ trong quốc hội) Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis are among the list of Island pols who think Barbot should get the boot.

“Get stupid drunk” nghĩa là gì?

Say để cho tỉnh. Photo by Elvis Bekmanis

“Get stupid drunk” = say đến ngu người/say đến ngớ ngẩn -> tiếng lóng nghĩa là rất say, say "quắc cần câu".

Ví dụ
"It used to be the realm of (lĩnh vực của) men to get stupid drunk and to do really foolish things under the influence," but now women are starting to engage in that kind of dangerous drinking, Fandrey said.

Bill Bailey began to experience the wider world and form his own opinions. As he approached 80 in the 1990s, he would write of seamen: “Well-read, many of them. But you’d hit a port and they would get stupid-drunk, lose their money, get rolled. Every childish, vulnerable thing that could happen to a human being would happen to sailors.”

Our special Jersey Shore drinking game is perfectly tailored to the new season and features all your old favorites, from Jenni “JWoww” Farley, Pauly D and the “keto guido” version of Vinny Guadagnino. Unfortunately, Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola won’t be on the new show, but while playing the drinking game, you’ll hardly even notice that she’s not there. Not only will this game get you tipsy (ngà ngà say, chếnh choáng), it will make watching the premiere (buổi ra mắt) feel like an interactive experience. Hey, if the gang gets to get stupid drunk, why can’t we? And if you’re a lightweight, you better pray Mike “the Situation” Sorrentino doesn’t show up too much with his legal woes and cringey (khúm núm, quỵ lụy) jokes. Otherwise you might end the night face down on the floor a lá Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi.

“Get smart with” nghĩa là gì?

Cá tính đấy. Photo by  Joanna Nix

“Get smart with” = tỏ ra thông minh (hơn người) -> nghĩa là nói hỗn xược, xấc láo với ai.

Ví dụ
“'Don't get smart with this coronavirus,' I tell them,” Sigrah said. “'If you get it, you go to your room and stay there. Don't touch your wife. Nothing.

Hialeah police officer Harold Garzon asked Cesar Baldelomar not to get "smart" with him. But the 26-year-old Harvard graduate and Florida International University law school student couldn't help it.

Actor Rashami Desai might be one of the most sought after faces on Indian television but she didn’t have it all easy. In her latest interaction with an entertainment portal (cổng giải trí), she revealed her casting couch experience and how her mother gave her all the courage to deal with harassment (sự quấy rối) in the industry. Rashami talked to Pinkvilla in her latest interview and mentioned an agent named Suraj who tried to get smart with her but was ultimately taught a lesson by her mother. “Get shot of” nghĩa là gì?

Một mình vẫn ổn. Photo by  pawel szvmanski

“Get shot of” có từ shot là phát đạn, phát bắn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là tránh xa hoặc loại bỏ ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
"Every couple of years they would drag me in and make some story up in an attempt to get shot of me - they knew I was bisexual (lưỡng tính)," he said.

"I was really sad that the club closed and we could not find an operator to come in and continue. But I think the landlord had made up his mind up to get shot of the place unfortunately," he said.

Were I WADA and the International Olympic Committee, I’d want to get shot of the whole business immediately. Bury the Russia file in the deepest sub-basement and quit while I’m ahead. But these guys haven’t been ahead in a long time.

“Get shed of” nghĩa là gì?

“Get shed of” có từ shed là ném đi, bỏ rơi, chuyển đi -> cụm từ này nghĩa là loại trừ, bãi bỏ hoặc được tự do/thoát khỏi sự kiềm tỏa.

Ví dụ
More specifically, tell us why you want to get shed of Jefferson, but not the Democrat party he and James Madison founded in 1792?

Along the way (là trong khoảng thời gian điều nào đó đang diễn ra hay trong khi bạn đang làm gì), a deal to get shed of the property (tài sản) short-circuited quickly after a wannabe owner started scrapping material but not making any payments to PGI.

In the homily at his funeral (đám tang), Pastor James Lamkin’s words tell another story. “To be a preacher (người thuyết giáo, giảng đạo) … is not to be on a career path. It is more calling than career. And a calling is hard to get shed of, even if one wanted to. It is more than skin deep. It goes all the way to the bone.” He compares Clay’s calling to that of Jeremiah, describing it as a “collect call.” “There is something like a fire shut up in my bones; and I am weary from holding it in, and I cannot.” Lamkin closed with this thought: “We all feel left behind today … (having been) invited to stand close enough to feel that burn … the fire in the bones.”

“Get religion” nghĩa là gì?

Một người nữ đẹp là người biết trau dồi trang sức bề trong. Photo by Volodymyr Hryshchenko

“Get religion” = theo đạo/tôn giáo -> nghĩa là bắt đầu theo và tin vào một niềm tin tôn giáo nào đó và nghĩa khác là quyết định hành xử có đạo đức và đúng chuẩn mực xã hội.

Ví dụ
Following the 2016 presidential election (cuộc bầu cử tổng thống), Dean Baquet, then executive editor of The New York Times, declared that one of his “big jobs” was to “really understand and explain the forces in America” that produced such a surprising result. Leading media organizations, he admirably admitted, simply do not “get religion.”

We also get religion, caste (địa vị đẳng cấp), politics, violence, corruption (tham nhũng) and power-play at all levels, whether it is in tony (đẹp, sang, đúng mốt) South Delhi or in dust-ridden rural areas: some of the most powerful parts of Pataal Lok are set in rural Punjab, and Chitrakoot, an ancient town which gets its nous (trí tuệ, sự hiểu lẽ thường) from being the place Lord Ram made a stop-over at on his way to Lanka.

In her Instagram story apology, the Bravo star said, “When I wrote that it's ‘God’s way of thinning the herd,’ that’s not what I meant.” She did not, however, clarify what she meant fully, although she did get religion involved. "What I meant was, do these pandemics (đại dịch) happen because it’s God’s way? I’m not God, I’m not insensitive (không nhạy cảm). I feel bad for all the families who have lost loved ones. And I do think we should all stay home and protect everybody. That’s not what I meant, and I want to apologize to anybody who got offended,” she continued.

“Get PO'd” nghĩa là gì?

Please don't. Photo by  Sowemimo Bamidele

“Get PO'd” có từ PO'd là viết tắt của "pissed off” để mang tính nói giảm nói tránh -> cụm từ này nghĩa là vô cùng bực tức, cáu gắt, giận dữ, phẫn nộ.

Ví dụ
"I told my wife sooner or later what's going on over there, someone's gonna get PO'd, they're gonna ride by and shoot it up," Massey said.

“She started giggling (cười rúc rích, cười khúc khích) and smirking (cười điệu, cười ngớ ngẩn) when she saw me. As a parent you are going to get P.O’d. My daughter didn’t want to get near her. I wanted her to see my daughter. I was like — ‘Go to her, Mama. Go to her.’ But my daughter didn’t want to go.

"Then the Teddy Atlas Foundation stepped in and paid for trainers and insurance," Russo says. "So forgive me if I get p.o.'d when I hear local elected leaders saying on TV news that there's nothing available in East Flatbush for local kids. That's bull. We're here. If we had gotten to Kimani Gray, he might've been fighting in the Golden Gloves that night instead of carrying a gun as a member of the Bloods. He'd still be alive, working towards a diploma (văn bằng), a job, a future, a family."

“Get pasted” nghĩa là gì?

Khi gái đẹp làm trọng tài. Photo by Marina Lakotka

“Get pasted” có từ paste là bị đấm/đánh (nhừ tử, nhão như bột) -> tiếng lóng nghĩa là say rượu hoặc bị đánh bại/bị dẫn bàn.

Ví dụ
Chris Boyd was in no mood to rejoice after Saints snatched a late win at Benetton, insisting his side must perform much better in future or 'we're going to get pasted'.

“I was playing with Seattle in 2014 and every time we went into Houston you would hear this banging," Morrison wrote. “No one put two and two together. Seattle fans may remember we came with in (sic) a game of going to the playoffs. Felix should have won a CY young (sic) that year. But couldn’t get pasted (sic) the 5th in Houston.

To be honest, there’s no way Hal can win this battle without “cheating”. If this is a “brawl,” (cãi lộn ầm ĩ, tiếng róc rách) he’s probably going to easily lose because there doesn’t seem to be a limit to Saitama’s strength and speed. Because the gimmick (phô trương, mẹo quảng cáo) of the story is that he’s just “stronger than everyone else,” he’s got no upper limit to be compared to. For all we know he could get pasted by Superman, or KO the Man of Steel. But if this is a fight to the death, who gets around straight up being teleported into the sun? Or into another galaxy?

“Get pinked” nghĩa là gì?

“Get pinked” = bị đâm/xiên, bị nổ pành pạch -> nghĩa là bị bắn, trúng đạn hoặc bị giáo đâm trong chiến trận. Nghĩa thứ hai là bị sa thải, giống 'get fired' đó các bạn.

Ví dụ
If you get pinked for refusing to come back to work during the pandemic (đại dịch) you can't get unemployment benefits.

“And that's what I think is so f**ked up,” he says. “I don't want my attitude (thái độ) to put me in a situation where I might get pinked.”.

I need this job and need to figure out how to do these basic things before I get pinked. I'm afraid to talk to my boss about it. What should I do?

"Key figure" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by LinkedIn Sales Navigator from Pexels

"Key figure" nghĩa là nhân vật/người cốt cán, chủ chốt, quan trọng nhất.

Ví dụ
Sheldon Jeter, a key figure in the murder case of Rachael DelTondo, is accused (bị buộc tội) by State Police of killing a man in Aliquippa.

A key figure in the unsolved (chưa giải quyết) murder case of Rachael DelTondo was arrested (bắt giữ) in an unrelated deadly shooting; KDKA's Amy Wadas reports.

Former national ski coach (cựu huấn luyện viên trượt tuyết quốc gia) Mati Alaver was a key figure in sports physician (bác sĩ) Dr. Mark Schmidt's doping network, according to well-known German investigative (điều tra) journalist Hajo Seppelt.

Sullivan and Belinda became close friends over the years because they both share that same passion (đam mê) for the outdoors. They don’t just live it themselves. They help others live it. Both have been key figures in the Viking Sportsmen group for years, the local outdoor organization that is going strong now in its 75th year.

“Getting there is half the fun” nghĩa là gì?

Bay cao nào, nhảy cao nào. Photo by  Park Troopers

“Getting there is half the fun” = tới đó là một nửa niềm vui  -> nghĩa là chính việc đang làm/tiến hành thực hiện mục tiêu tự bản thân đã là niềm vui/thích thú.

Ví dụ
“Sadie brought home all this orange to reddish mud (bùn hơi đỏ đỏ) stuck (kẹt, dính) to her car,” he practically gushed (phun ra, phọt ra). “It was wonderful.” As such, it’s almost like Schafer’s paintings come to life – one can practically reach out and feel the desert grit (đá mạt, hạt sạn), the sheer sanddtone (đá cát kết, sa thạch) face and the wispy cirrus clouds. A tangible piece of the Southwest in one’s own living room. But not all of his works make it that far. Because as with life and art, getting there is half the fun. Or not. “All of my paintings have had many incarnations (hiện thân),” he said. “I’ll get really close, and really like something, and I’ll f*** it up.”

There’s an old saying that getting there is half the fun. That’s true if you are hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. But what if you’re on a plane with nothing to see but clouds? Or stuck in traffic on a freeway? Not much fun. For those times, you might want something to distract and entertain you. We looked at dozens of new toys, games and activities, and selected a handful that are easy to pack for your summer travels. We can’t guarantee that playing with them will provide half the fun of your vacation, but it would definitely be better than staring at clouds.

I grew up going on epic (sử thi, bản hùng ca) road trips, because, according to my father, “getting there is half the fun.” These trips were well planned and researched months in advance, heralded (được báo trước) by a visit to the library for books with titles like “Fifty Free Things To Do in Iowa.” Mom would make a vat of chicken salad that we would eat at rest areas as we made our way across the country. We camped in our pop-up camper (trại bật lên, dựng lên) and visited places like the world’s largest hand dug well. I read books or scribbled in my spiral-bound notebook or just stared out of our conversion (người trò chuyện) van’s windows as the scenery flew by. As a kid, I loved it.

"Hold the key" nghĩa là gì?

Thuốc điều trị COVID-19 liệu sắp thành công? Photo by Karolina Grabowska from Pexels

"Hold the key" nghĩa là nắm giữ chìa khóa, then chốt, yếu tố quyết định.

Ví dụ
The pandemic might hold the key to freedom for an American hostage (con tin) in Iran.

A llama (lạc đà không bướu) called Winter could hold the key to creating a treatment for COVID-19, according to US and Belgian scientists.

Antibody testing (xét nghiệm kháng thể) is becoming more widely available and it could hold the key to determining how many people have been exposed to the coronavirus. The testing is also an effective marketing tool for a local nonprofit (tổ chức phi lợi nhuận).

"Scientists reveal solar system's (hệ thống năng lượng mặt trời) oldest molecular fluids (phân tử thể lỏng) could hold the key to early life: The oldest molecular fluids in the solar system could have supported the rapid formation and evolution (tiến hóa) of the building blocks of life." "In a minor key" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ruslan Alekso from Pexels

"In a minor key" = khóa thứ/ âm giai thứ (âm nhạc). Nghĩa khác là gạch chân (understate), ý chỉ các khái niệm trừu tượng hoặc (tâm trạng) buồn/ (quy mô, chất lượng) hạn chế, nhỏ.

Ví dụ
Dance music would become more synthetic (giả tạo) as the years rolled by, but Caribou started the decade by reminding the world that electronic music is written in a minor key for a reason.

“It’s rare to see a minor-key drama that doesn’t overextend (trải rộng) the nature of the material,” says IndieWire, “and rarer still for cinema to dig this deep into the female psyche (tâm lý) without boxing it in.”

Research attests to the appeal of musical wallowing: A 2008 study conducted (thực hiện) in Japan and published (công bố) in Frontiers in Emotion Science found that participants largely preferred songs played in a minor key (and perceived as “sad”) to those played in a major key (khóa trưởng).

The hypnotic (thôi miên), minor-key groove is great enough, but the dancing-with-the-devil lyric is just as good. Texas legend Hubbard is best known for “Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother,” but his songwriting and stage presence (khả năng làm chủ sân khấu) have always been light years better than that timeless gem.

"Low-key" nghĩa là gì?

BTS - một trong những người nổi tiếng luôn âm thầm làm từ thiện. Photo courtesy Quynh Chi

"Low-key" nghĩa là khiêm tốn, không phô trương, một cách kiềm chế hoặc tinh tế, nhẹ nhàng, âm thầm. Từ gần giống nghĩa là "humble", trái nghĩa là "high-key".

Ví dụ
140th anniversary of SMA Mission in Ghana marked in low key amid coronavirus.

Scott Morrison has marked a year since his miraculous (kỳ diệu) election victory with a low-key celebratory email to supporters.

BTS may be low-key about it, but they frequently contribute to charity foundations (quỹ từ thiện). V, in particular, is known for his love for fashion. This is evident when we see him sporting stylish outfits and accessories from the world’s most renowned (nổi tiếng) luxury brands.

Since her appearances on the shows (2015 and 2016, respectively) she has continued to make music as well as upload videos on YouTube. She has a softer vibe compared to the other rappers on this list, with a knack (sở trường) for using her low-key style to smoothly transition from singer to rapper.

"Occam's razor" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Ignacio F. on Unsplash

"Occam's razor" = dao cạo Occam -> châm ngôn nói rằng những lý thuyết đơn giản nhất nên được áp dụng trước.

Ví dụ
The principle of Occam’s razor dictates (tuyên bố) that the simplest solution is always the best, and for Ben Rose (pictured), the chief underwriting (bảo hiểm) officer at Digital Risks, the coronavirus lockdown has thrown this adage (châm ngôn) into sharp focus.

Most of the conversations we have about big ideas are predicated (đã được xác nhận) on an Occam’s Razor kind of mentality: the simplest explanation is usually the correct explanation.

Some nation-states are treating the COVID crisis as a continuation of the age-old game of tit-for-tat (ăn miếng trả miếng), and it’s shameful. Even though things are incontrovertibly (hiển nhiên) provable online, Occam’s Razor still applies and the preponderance (ưu thế hơn) of circumstantial evidence makes it clear what the real actions of a country are regardless of rhetoric.

"Until kingdom come" nghĩa là gì?

Có thể vĩnh viễn tồn tại, vĩnh viến không chịu rời đi. Photo by Miguel Á. Padriñán from Pexels

"Until/til kingdom come" nghĩa là vĩnh viễn, mãi mãi. "Kingdom come" có ý nghĩa là thế giới bên kia.

Ví dụ
We could go on feeding our infinite wants, eating our way through the Earth's diversity, til Kingdom Come.

“When will this ever stop? … COVID-19 will not stop. It will be here and it will stay until kingdom come,” Mr. Duterte said in a televised message to the nation aired on Friday morning.

Going on this third extension of these community quarantine rules, we face the prospects (viễn cảnh) that we may have to live under lockdown regime “til kingdom come” as declared much earlier on by President Duterte.

“We even have some of those machines and we could theoretically do rapid testing,” Kastman said. “But in that case, the reagents (thuốc thử) are on backorder (đơn hàng dự trữ) until kingdom come. There’s no estimated ship date. Somebody’s got them. And so the supply chain (chuỗi cung ứng) is just backed up.”

"My kingdom for a horse" nghĩa là gì?

Một con ngựa đổi lấy cả một vương quốc, hay tính mạng mới quan trọng, hơn cả tiền bạc. Photo by Johannes Plenio from Pexels

"My kingdom for a horse" = đổi vương quốc lấy một con ngựa -> nghĩa là bạn sẵn sàng đánh đổi/cho đi tất cả thứ bạn có để đổi lấy thứ bạn cần. Cụm từ xuất phát từ vở "Richard III" của Shakespeare, khi vị vua này than vãn rằng vì thiếu ngựa mà ông ta để thua trận chiến.

Ví dụ
Republicans (Đảng Cộng hòa) want to save their wealthy donors - Democrats (Đảng Dân chủ) want to save lives. When push came to shove (xô đẩy), Richard III chose to trade his kingdom for a horse.

“A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!” cries the titular (có địa vị) character of William Shakespeare’s drama “Richard III." According to Shakespeare, King Richard III was willing to give up his kingdom for a horse. If you remember the story, you know that he lost his horse in battle and needed another to escape and save his life. Too bad for Richard, he lost his life in the battle.

OK, “spoiler alert.” Having mentioned “wealth” — this “wealth” unfortunately appears to be a priority over “health” for some in our nation. “A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!” (Shakespeare quote) shows what circumstances do to wealth. My grandma used to say, “I shall not take any money with me to my grave.” Of course! Now, have a good look and listen to “protesters” (người biểu tình) against health protecting measures (biện pháp bảo vệ). What does it tell you about the “protesters’” values? About their “freedom?”

"The keys to the kingdom" nghĩa là gì?

"The keys to the kingdom" = chìa khóa đến vương quốc -> "key" ở đây tượng trưng cho kiến thức, nguồn lực, giúp bạn làm được mọi việc.

Ví dụ
Let someone threaten all he likes. You still hold the keys to the kingdom. And since what you say goes, you won't even have to talk too loud.

“Ransomware is the intrusions (xâm nhập),” said Foster. “The traditional hacking only makes up about 8 percent of cybercrime (tội phạm mạng). The rest is we’re giving them the keys to the kingdom.”

While he has the talent to be worthy of a fourth-round pick in 2019 and has drawn praise (khen ngợi) by various members of New England's masthead including Bill Belichick, there's still a mystery as to what he'll do when given the keys to the kingdom. After all, he's only thrown four passes in the NFL to this point.

The CIO of a local financial services and insurance (bảo hiểm) company, who is a former student and friend, told me that “it’s often said that privileged access (truy cập không giới hạn) credentials (khả năng) are the keys to the kingdom, and in these turbulent (hỗn loạn) times they’re the keys to keeping any business running.”

"Follow someone/something out" nghĩa là theo đuổi ai/cái gì đến cùng.

Ví dụ
“It really made me smile knowing that they not only wanted to mentor them for this one moment but they wanted to follow them out and see their future plans,” Tamicka Riley, Caleb and Caitlin’s mom said.

Ramona was able to flee (chạy trốn) through a basement exit along with just one child, Birdie Africa. The other 11 adults and children tried to follow them out but were forced back under a hail of police gunfire, she said, though that account has been disputed over the years by Philadelphia police.

"After you start seeing empty beds or stop catching fish shallow in the lower end you have a couple options," Huff explained. "The first option would be to head up the lake using the same patterns looking for fresh fish in shallow water. Or you can look for closest deep water to where you were catching shallow, spawning fish and try to follow them out.

"Bullshit artist" có từ bullshit là chuyện nhảm nhí, vớ vẩn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là người thường xuyên nói phóng đại/cường điệu hoặc nói chuyện nhảm nhí.

Ví dụ
Mike Milbury is and always has been a bullshit artist. While those skills have been useful to him in his career as a hockey analyst (người phân tích) on television, they also came into play during his time as an NHL general manager.

De Niro has been one of Trump’s most vocal (lớn tiếng) critics (chỉ trích) since before the presidential election, describing him at various times as “totally nuts”, a “bullshit artist”, a “wannabe gangster” and a “real racist”. In 2019, De Niro told the Guardian: “I can’t wait to see him in jail. I don’t want him to die, I want him to go to jail.”

Ivanka Trump is many things: a terrible political advisor (cố vấn), the owner of a Nazi dog, and billboard for the world’s ugliest haircut. But she’s also an accomplished bullshit artist, who has spent the last four years slipping past any and all questions about her involvement in her father’s administration like a sewer rat (chuột cống) escaping with some fresh chunk of rotting (thối rữa) garbage.

She also loves fresh catnip (cây bạc hà mèo) and spinach and will follow you around anywhere to try to get you to give her some.

“(We should) get rid of ads that follow you around, or that you’re exposed to over and over. "Hair-splittingly" nghĩa là sự khác biệt/cách biệt cực kỳ nhỏ, không đáng kể.

Ví dụ

There are some hunters and fishermen who actually prefer a standard broader angle on the knives they break down carcasses (xác động vật) or fillet with because, while not as hair-splittingly sharp, their edges are more durable (bền) on tough tasks.

"Have/get a wild hair up (one's) ass" (tiếng lóng) nghĩa là ám ảnh với điều gì (lạ, khác thường) hoặc trở nên tăng động/ tràn đầy năng lượng vì điều gì.

Ví dụ
Aw, you know Charley. He's a good man. He's just got him a wild hair up his ass over that kid.

Each time I would get close she would do something to make me turn the other cheek. I mean really if you want someone to love and appreciate you quit having a wild hair up your ass! She doesn't call the people that don't mean shit to hear her vent (xả giận).

I was all cut and scratched (trầy xước) as it was very difficult to work in this small area. Too tight for Teddy, and furthermore, his hands were too big. He asked me to help his regular crew as Herschel had gotten a wild hair up his ass to use the plane tomorrow.

Ví dụ

"Come on," Cinder said. "Let's have it. Tell Cinder why you've got a hair across your ass.”
“I do not have a hair across my ass,” I said. “Whatever that means. I do not have a hair across my ass in any way. It's just that I got Hector out of here so you could see John Paul and then you don't even say, 'Thank you, Charlotte. I really appreciate (đánh giá cao) that."
