"Have a bumpy ride" nghĩa là gì?

Muốn đi nhanh hãy đi một mình, muốn đi xa hãy đi cùng nhau. Photo by  Amy Humphries

"Have a bumpy ride" = Gặp đường đi gập ghềnh/mấp mô -> Gặp khó khăn/rắc rối trong vài hoạt động/sự theo đuổi.

Ví dụ
Trade talks are likely to have a bumpy ride until we see both sides offer concessions (sự nhượng bộ) and that may not happen for a month.

“The conclusion is that Sibanye-Stillwater is likely to have a bumpy ride in these wage negotiations (đàm phán tiền công) and has a high possibility of seeing Lonmin workers go on strike (đình công),” it said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency can monitor compliance (sự tuân thủ) with nuclear regulation. But we have minimal success in enforcing drug or tax laws globally. Regulations of cyber and biotech (công nghệ sinh học) will likewise be harder to enforce because, unlike the nuclear case, they don’t require conspicuous special-purpose facilities. We may have a bumpy ride because we can’t eliminate (loại trừ) these threats completely.

"Have work cut out for" nghĩa là gì?

Bàn làm việc của người bận rộn có khác. Photo by  Ferenc Horvath

"Have (one's) work cut out for (one)" -> Đương đầu/đối mặt với nhiều công việc và rất khó khăn.

Ví dụ
Greece, North Macedonia have work cut out for them. The prickliest (dễ cáu nhất) issues emanating (bắt nguồn) from the name change to North Macedonia.

Sharks have work cut out for them with three games until playoffs (trận đấu loại trực tiếp). Melker Karlsson and Lukas Radil will both miss their second match.

So, I guess I have my work cut out for me. It's not a piece of cake.” Reed was part of the Crimson Tide Masters team competing at nationals.

“That’s what these guys do, that’s what we do,’’ the manager said when asked how his club, which has lost four straight, can rebound. “Looking forward to going down to L.A. and obviously playing a great club down there in their ballpark (sân chơi bóng chày) where they are really good. So we know we have our work cut out for us, but we also embrace the challenge (chấp nhận thách thức). Over the course of a long season, you are going to take one in the mouth.

"Bad news has wings" nghĩa là gì?

Bad news "có cánh" nghĩa đen. Photo courtesy: Gary Watt

"Bad news has wings" = tin xấu có cánh -> nghĩa là tin xấu thường được lan truyền nhanh hơn tin tốt vì mọi người có xu hướng kể với nhau những loại tin này; "tiếng dữ đồn xa".

Ví dụ
“Bad news has wings,” I said. “As long as people make a business out of breeding and selling wild animals, China is far from being civilized (văn minh).”

“Job seekers are definitely researching your company before or after applying, which is why brand reputation is so important. Bad news has wings. If there are bad reviews from your previous or current employees online, it can be a red flag to candidates,” Pham says.'

This technique, while obtaining (thu được) the feedback, can at the same time greatly increase the rate of positive evaluation (đánh giá) of an app and reduce the influence of negative evaluations. This can be explained with the popular proverb "bad news has wings”. In fact, there is a term in psychology called "negative bias (xu hướng)" which is used to describe how, in comparison with positive information, our brain has usually a more intense and lasting response to negative information. In theory, that is, we are more easily affected by negative news.

Bạn lâu năm. Photo by Noémi Macavei-Katócz

"Live in (one's) pocket" = Sống trong túi của ai -> Sống gần gũi/gắn bó với ai trong một thời gian dài.

Ví dụ
There's no excuse: the world's virtual (ảo) libraries live in your pocket. With Fyre Festival, the stink (sự phiền toái, mùi hôi thúi) was obvious months before the big day.

Polly Pocket was all the rage (tính ham mê). She could live in your pocket! You’d love her until that faithful day when the ink on her face faded off and she was just a tiny ball marble (trò chơi bi) with clothes on.

We don't live in each other's pocket but we work in each other's pocket. It's been a wonderful relationship. I've got the utmost respect for him.”.

It's a heavy ball. You're playing 15-on-15, it's man marking... you're sticking on [your man] the whole game and you've got to live in his pocket, simple as that.

"Lick her boots" nghĩa là gì?

Ê, sao mình đi chân trần miết vậy? Photo by  Meg Kannan

"Lick (one's) boots" = Liếm giày ai đó -> Hành động vô cùng thấp hèn, rất đồng ý với ai điều gì đăc biệt là với những người có quyền thế hoặc cũng được coi là cách để nịnh hót ai/cầu cạnh ai để xin ân huệ.

Ví dụ
“Nigger, nigger (người da đen) lick my boots,” went one chant, which presumably found favour on account of its modest (khiêm tốn) syllable (âm tiết) count.

A student from Arunachal Pradesh has alleged (cho là, khẳng định) a racial attack by his landlord (chủ nhà), who he claimed beat him up and forced him to lick his boots.

That’s the underlying premise of Late Night, and the 28-year-veteran of late-night TV is played by Emma Thompson… who is, to be fair, exactly the sort of woman who should have been enjoying such a long comedic tenure (sự chiếm hữu) in America’s sleepytimeslot. The overlying premise (tiền đề) is that, in an attempt to get her ratings mojo back and save her job — which the network is threatening to hand over to a truly awful younger male comic who is not worthy to lick her boots — Thompson’s Katherine Newbury hires a new writer who is the first to break the white-male wall of blandness (nhạt nhẽo, ôn tồn) that is her writers’ room.

"Cut your coat according to your cloth" nghĩa là gì?

May kiểu này có lạ quá không? Photo courtesy: rubengutierrez49

"Cut your coat according to your cloth" = may áo phải canh vải.

Of course, we'd love a luxurious car, but you have to cut your coat according to your cloth.

This six-bedroom Georgian mansion (biệt thự) was once owned – and refurbished (tân trang) – by British designer Karen Millen. If you’re interested be sure you can cut your coat according to your cloth as it’s on sale for just under a fashionable 1.5 million.

“Even in the wake of increased taxation, the government’s liquidity (khả năng thanh toán bằng tiền mặt) position has not improved due to failure to limit excessive fiscal spending (chi cho chính phủ quá mức),” Chizonde noted. “The need to ‘cut your coat according to your cloth’ is much needed advice for the current situation. Government should do as much as they can to work with what is available.”

"Eye in the sky" nghĩa là gì?

Khi con người ta đang mất dần niềm tin lẫn nhau. Photo by Paweł Czerwiński

"Eye in the sky" = Mắt trên bầu trời -> Sự giám sát/theo dõi kỹ và cẩn thận ngay trên trên đầu như camera hoặc trực thăng của cảnh sát.

Ví dụ
"It's another eye in the sky that can help me," he said. "It helps me sleep better at night not worrying about past problems and things I might miss."

Is it worth buying a home security camera? For most people, yes. These devices provide an eye in the sky, meaning you can check-in at any time.

The reason for this “eye in the sky” and “feet on the ground” (or fins (lá tản nhiệt) in the water) approach is both technical and sociological (xã hội học).

The eye in the sky orbiting (đưa vào quỹ đạo) Earth at an altitude (độ cao so với mặt nước biển) of 682km took thousands of high-resolution optical (quang học, thị giác) images captured at 2.5 panchromatic during Dubai’s unprecedented growth. It chronicled (ghi chép những sự kiện) how the UAE transformed into the metropolis (thủ phủ) it is now. But it also helped provide images to other countries that needed it.

"To the bitter end" nghĩa là gì?

Đã đi là phải đi cho đến cùng. Photo by  Jude Beck

"To/until the bitter end" = Cho đến kết cục đắng cay -> Cho đến giai đoạn cuối/kết thúc dù có khó khăn, cay đắng như thế nào.

Ví dụ
While neither is particularly attractive, we’re on this journey (hành trình) with them until the bitter end.

Refuse Hong Kong’s protesters everything, and they will fight to the bitter end. This is not a storm that Carrie Lam’s administration can sit out. Deny the protesters everything and we force them to fight the current political order to the death, in nihilistic (chủ nghĩa vô chính phủ) destruction, convinced they have nothing to lose.

The bout was tasked with serving as a primer (kíp nổ) for Hatanaka’s stablemate (người cùng nhóm), unbeaten three-division and reigning flyweight (trọng lượng bay) titlist (chức vị) Kosei Tanaka in a title defense versus Puerto Rico’s Jonathan ‘Bomba’ Gonzalez. Instead, they provided an extremely tough act for the main event to follow, throwing knockout-intended punches from the opening bell and not at all letting up until the bitter end.

"Moonlight and roses" nghĩa là gì?

Đêm nay có ánh trăng kia làm chứng tình yêu đôi ta :))))). Photo by Everton Vila

"Moonlight and roses" = Ánh trăng và những đóa hồng -> Chỉ không khí/tình huống rất lãng mạn và giàu cảm xúc. Cụm này thường được dùng trong các cấu trúc phủ định để nhấn mạnh những thách thức trong tình yêu.

Ví dụ
Award-winning muso, Sjava, may be riding the wave of success, but that doesn't mean everything in his life is all moonlight and roses. In fact, the singer hinted that things may not be going so well for him.

If you thought marriage to Barack Obama seemed all moonlight and roses, Michelle Obama begs to differ. The former First Lady brought the publicity tour for her best-selling memoir (hồi ký) to Britain last night, and with it some straight-talking (nói thẳng thắn) about relationships. "When I talk to young people just starting to get married, I say: there are going to be huge chunks of time where you want to push him out the window," she said.

I hopefully have shown you a cursory glimpse (cái nhìn lướt qua) of some of the ways AI-based (dựa trên trí tuệ nhân tạo) software can transform MSAs in a positive way. But I would be remiss (tắc trách) if I made it sound like the transition to new systems is all moonlight and roses. Change is hard. People are used to doing things in very specific ways. It may take time to find and implement the right system as well as train the team on how to use it. But consider the alternative.

"Light a fire under" nghĩa là gì?

Ngọn lửa chói qua tim. Photo by Cathal Mac an Bheatha

"Light a fire under (someone or something)" = Truyền lửa cho ai/điều gì -> Tạo động lực cho ai/điều gì để bắt tay hành động làm việc gì đó.

Ví dụ
David Berger in July that sought to light a fire under the Corps (quân đoàn) to reorient (định hướng lại, thay đổi quan niệm lại) itself away from traditional ideas of amphibious warfare (cuộc chiến tranh đổ bộ) and COIN.

But does it get pushed to the back of their minds or brought to the forefront to light a fire under the Eskimos offence now? “Really, it’s just about us and our pursuit (sự theo đuổi, đuổi bắt) to where we want to be,” said Eskimos quarterback Trevor Harris. “That feels like a season ago, we feel like we’ve made strides since then, but so have they.

Keeping Union Grove in the game was senior receiver Konner Goetsch. He scored on punt returns of 80 yards in the first quarter and 58 yards in the third. The second pulled the Broncos to within 28-13 and seemed to light a fire under them.

Fort Ligonier will light a fire under its upcoming History Happy Hour. One of its reproduction historical field ovens (lò nướng) will be lit for the event from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 23. Patrons can line up for Connections Café’s crusty (cứng giòn, cộc cằn) artisan (thợ thủ công) pizzas as they pop out of the clay oven (lò đất sét).

"Fool's Gold" nghĩa là gì?

Đi đâu mà vội mà vàng vậy em? Photo by  MUILLU

"Fool's Gold" = Vàng của tên ngốc/các khoáng sản màu vàng -> Điều gì đó đầy hứa hẹn/có triển vọng hơn so với thực tế của nó, kế hoạch/dự định của bạn tốt nhưng thực tế thì không đảm bảo thành công/chất lượng.

Ví dụ
In the Western Cape High Court yesterday, Judge Erasmus described the Steinhoff shares which Jooste traded as “fool’s gold”, opening the way for the R1.3bn a year shoe retailer (người bán lẻ) to be returned to its original owner.

Al-Qaida was debilitated (yếu sức) long ago and building an Afghan democracy is fool’s gold. No more U.S. troops (đoàn, lũ) should give their lives. Bring them all home.

But we wanted the gold – not fool’s gold we heard about. We wanted the real thing. One evening, my brothers and I went exploring in the ravine (khe núi) behind our motel (khách sạn cạnh đường cho khách có ôtô). One of my brothers found a rock about the size of a Nerf football. It was tan and black, with shiny flakes. It wasn’t gold, but its jagged edges shined just the same.

"Draw first blood" nghĩa là gì?

Yeah, 1-0 cho các cô gái quần xanh áo trắng. Photo by  Jeffrey F Lin

"Draw first blood" = Hút giọt máu đầu tiên -> Ghi bàn thắng trước/giành ưu thế trước đối thủ.

Ví dụ
Australia turned ‘Fortress Edgbaston’ into a Lyon’s den (hang, phòng riêng) as they drew first blood in the Ashes with a thumping 251-run victory over England in the opening Test.

Baycats unveil (bỏ màn) new digital screen (màn hình kỹ thuật số), draw first blood against Jackfish. It really is like our own JumboTron,' says team president; Baycats earn dramatic 3-2 triumph (chiến thắng lớn) to take 1-0 lead in semi-final series.

However, Nagal fought back to break Polansky twice to take the first set. The second set followed in a similar pattern with Nagal drawing the first blood but Polanksy came from behind to break back the Indian. The set went to tie break with Nagal holding his nerve to emerge (nổi lên) victorious. The 22-year-old from Haryana will now take on Brazil’s Joao Menezes, who is ranked 210, in the final qualifying round later in the day.

"Play both ends" nghĩa là gì?

Tránh ra đi...không là bay mất đầu. Photo by Josh Rocklage

"Play both ends against the middle" = Dùng hai bên đầu để chống bên giữa -> Làm cho hai phe đối nghịch chống lại nhau để giành lợi cho mình.

Ví dụ
A driven man who in all his business dealings—especially those between Russian and Western parties—played both ends against the middle.

Calling myself a reformed marketer gives me the illusory (viễn vông) comfort of still hanging on to something important to me, but holding it at arm’s length, like a disease I’ve recovered from. I’m trying to play both ends against the middle.

Accordionist Joey, the CowPolka King, “plays both ends against the middle,” as they say, on his “stomach Steinway.” The master musician, who apprenticed (cho học việc, học nghề) with the late polka king Frank Yankovic and has recorded with everyone from Roy Rogers to U2, is also the Riders’ album producer and a licensed driver (bằng lái xe).

"Stop and smell the roses" nghĩa là gì?

Đôi lúc nên sống chậm lại và tận hưởng hương vị của cuộc sống quanh ta. Photo by  Diego PH

"Stop and smell the roses" = Dừng lại và ngửi hương thơm của những đóa hồng -> Nhắc nhở/khuyên ai đó đang quá tải công việc phải làm hoặc bị stress đã đến lúc nên nghỉ ngơi và tận hưởng những điều tốt đẹp của cuộc sống.

Ví dụ
“Walking home from the park and see (sic) the TTC bus driver stop at ... it's OK to stop, smell the roses, pick up a cookie, drink some lemonade.

Last week, Silverthorne couple Alan and Mary Jo Brown introduced cyclists older than 50 to the beauty of Summit County and its seemingly endless bike trails. The two wanted to prioritize (dành ưu tiên) safety and make time to “stop to smell the roses” rather than focus on miles.

Greenleaf’s retirement plan changed with the adoption (nhận làm con nuôi, nghĩa dưỡng) of a rescue horse for his wife, June. Adjusting to the idea of taking some time to “stop and smell the roses” in this new lifestyle, the Greenleafs found that their new mare’s name, Scarlet Rose, was quite fitting, even though they’ve stayed busy with their other rescues – dogs, cats, and guinea pigs.

“I don’t really think of what’s happened to me in the past two or three years until I talk to people like yourself,” Maniscalco says, reflecting (phản ánh) on his career during our interview. “I told my wife that I don’t stop to smell the roses. When I’m in it, I’m doing it and then I’m onto the next thing. Maybe I haven’t been taking the time out to pump the breaks a bit and see where I’m at. It’s been a definite goal of mine to be a little more present. I want to enjoy the moments a little bit more than I have in the past.”

"All duck or no dinner" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Kasper Rasmussen on Unsplash

"All duck or no dinner" = toàn vịt (hầm) hoặc chẳng có bữa tối nào -> nghĩa là tình huống/nỗ lực/hành động mà kết quả là hoặc thành công hoặc thất bại hoàn toàn; 'được ăn cả, ngã về không'.

Ví dụ
Nicky Henderson's Theinval and A Toi Phil, who turns out quickly after being let down by his jumping in the Plate, also feature. Yorkhill – who is clear on ratings (xếp hạng) – doesn't need to be at his best to take this, but it seems a case of all duck or no dinner with the mount of Paul Townend these days.

"Consistency in a professional golfer is overrated (đánh giá quá cao), you want to be a little bit like Brooks Koepka, you want to be all duck or no dinner. "Early in his career he had that ability to go into overdrive (chơi quá sức), and we hadn't seen recently that from him. Even when he won the Players [Championship] this year, it wasn't an overdrive performance. He had not blown the field away the way he used to."

We may be sick of hearing talk about processes (quy trình), but that was big under James Horan. Before James, it was All-Ireland or bust. In the county it probably still is, but within the group it is different. That’s what they are striving (phấn đấu) to do, but it’s not all duck or no dinner. It’s a gradual (dần dần) process for them.

Cô dâu bất đắc dĩ. Photo by Scott Webb

"Just (one's) luck" = Xui xẻo thiệt mà -> Cách diễn đạt một cách tức điên về sự xui xẻo/không may mắn thường xuyên và hay xảy ra của ai.

Ví dụ
“Just my luck”, I thought. We still exchanged numbers as we’re both from London and I thought that there might still be hope.

There might just be an apparent (rõ ràng) power struggle at the top of the JGR totem pole, and surprisingly, Busch is the driver ... Just my luck at Bristol.

"Why not let someone else have a go? How can you be the only one I cast? This year I have two movies, when I don't let you star in them you get angry. I feed work to you constantly to the point when many ask if I have just the one lead actor. People say I am good to all 100 actors in my stable. I have never had anyone abuse me in public. It's just my luck to have a kid I have helped and for whom I held high hopes criticise me ... I am really disappointed," he said.

"Don't you/cha wish" = Bạn không muốn/ước -> Bạn muốn điều này/điều kia bạn mới nói thành sự thật. Thường cũng được dùng như một câu hỏi "Bạn không muốn à?

Ví dụ
Sarah: "I have to work hard to earn enough money for travelling to Japan next year." John: "Yeah, don't you wish!"

Don't you wish you had a dollar for every beleaguered (bị bao vây) official who cried “fiscal (tài chính, công khố) policy must do more”?

Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like a Sagittarius (cung nhân mã)? If you're looking for a partner who's always in the mood for an adventure, look no further than this mutable (hay thay đổi) fire sign. I can promise you that dating a Sagittarius will never stop being exciting.

"Men in blue" nghĩa là gì?

Oh, cô nàng cảnh sát xinh đẹp và lòng yêu nước của anh. Photo by  Haus of Zeros

"Men (and women) in blue" -> Chỉ những cảnh sát nói chung.

Ví dụ
What keeps women in “pink” jobs and men in “blue” ones? There is no reason to expect a 50-50 split (sự chia rẽ, tách biệt) in every occupation (nghề nghiệp, công việc), says Professor Blau.

Clapprood said it's "an emotional drain (sự tiêu hao) on all the women and men in blue" anytime the department loses a police officer, whether it's on-duty or off-duty (đang thực hiện hoặc hết trách nhiệm, bổn phận).

“I’ve tried everything within my power to raise awareness (nâng cao nhận thức) about how our men in blue are being treated…This is our reality, you can’t sweep (quét, lướt qua) that under the rug (mền, chăn). You can’t unbreak my mother’s heart, you can’t unbreak his children’s heart and you can’t unbreak mine.”

"Flood the market" nghĩa là gì?

Xoài đê...xoài đê...Photo by Warren Kenneth de Souza

"Flood the market" -> Chỉ hàng hóa tràn khắp thị trường và bán với giá thấp.

Ví dụ
As property management businesses flood the market with lucrative (sinh lợi) success, savvy (sự hiểu biết) tech entrepreneurs (người khởi nghiệp) have followed suit.

The Irish government is under pressure to defend (ngăn chặn) its beef farmers, already suffering from Britain’s looming (đang nở rộ) EU exit and low prices, by seeking to ensure Mercosur countries do not flood the market with cheaper beef.

A major reason drugs are even mildly (nhẹ nhàng) affordable (vừa phải, vừa túi tiền) in the U.S. is that cheap generic copies (bản sao y hệt) can eventually flood the market. But first the Food and Drug Administration grants new drugs a few years of monopoly “exclusivity.” (độc quyền) For decades this high-price-before-low-price model has fueled astounding (làm kinh ngạc) pharmaceutical innovation while also providing long-term access to important treatments.

"A ray of hope" nghĩa là gì?

Tia hy vọng chỉ nơi Cha. Photo by Marc-Olivier Jodoin

"A ray of hope" = Một tia hy vọng -> Một dấu hiệu duy nhất cho sự cải thiện và dẫn đến thành công trong một hoàn cảnh/tình huống nào đó.

Ví dụ
BREXITEERS have drawing up a shopping list of extra demands (đòi hỏi, yêu cầu thêm) to seek from Brussels after Boris managed to secure (đảm bảo) a ray of hope from the EU on a new Brexit deal - but Boris has warned it won't be easy.

A Lanarkshire charity is seeking to add a ray of hope and happiness, however, by bringing children from the town of Klimivichi to spend a month breathing clean air (không khí trong lành), eating healthy food and enjoying experiences they could only dream of at home.

Given that 93 percent of Americans consider incivility (thái độ khiếm nhã) to be a severe (nghiêm trọng) problem in our society, we could sure use a ray of hope! Well, there is one, and it’s found in the workplace. You may be happy to learn that a similar proportion (khuôn khổ, chuẩn mực) of people – more than nine out of 10 Americans who work with others – describe their place of employment as very or somewhat civil. In addition, 27 percent of this cohort (thuần tập) report that this level of civility has improved compared to just a few years ago. Overall, Americans’ experience of incivility in their workplace has declined from 43 percent in 2011 to 29 percent in 2018.

"Make the scene" nghĩa là gì?

Nếu lỡ một ngày gặp lại người yêu cũ...Photo by  Jens Johnsson

"Make the scene" = Tạo/dựng một cảnh/hiện trường -> Xuất hiện ở đâu đó/tham gia một sự kiện/hoạt động nào đó hoặc hiểu theo nghĩa là phân tích/hiểu/định giá một hoàn cảnh/tình huống nào đó.

Ví dụ
While Lowry, Conley and the rest make their move on Silverstern, the remains of Kidd’s Trio, D’Angelo and Schroder, make the scene too. And they’re already making far too much noise (gây quá nhiều tiếng ồn).

The firefighters (lính cứu hỏa) will be working with partner agencies to make the scene safe and continue with the fire investigation (cuộc nghiên cứu, điều tra).

After everything was said and done, the purse (ngân quỹ) may not even make it into the final game, Arellano said. Instead, the game developers are thinking about other ways to make the scene work, which may add more depth (sự sâu sắc) to the character.

Although Weatherly said he thought it might make the scene better, this isn’t the reason he took his pants off. Rather, the actor often took off his pants so he could get a laugh. He told Ray he used to be a class clown (vai hề), and he became accustomed to making people laugh by taking off his pants. “In the fifth grade I was a class clown, and I always was looking for the laugh. Sometimes the easiest laugh, when you’re me, is to take your pants off,” said Weatherly.
