"Could not act way out of a paper bag" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Joanna Nix on Unsplash

"Couldn't act/ doing something) way out of a paper bag" = (làm điều gì đó) không thoát ra khỏi cái túi giấy -> diễn xuất hoặc làm điều gì đó một cách tệ hại, nghèo nàn.

Ví dụ
"He is a Wordpress website designer and (couldn't) hack his way out of a paper bag," he said. "This whole suit is a joke."

She’s dead behind the eyes. She couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag. She should not be on film or on stage. She’s a wonderful performer (nghệ sĩ trình diễn tuyệt vời) for what she does, but she is not an actress.

Mr Duncan Smith continued: “I looked at that and I thought to myself this is the man that delivered the deal (đưa ra thỏa thuận) that we’re in at the moment. And I have to say I don’t have a huge amount of confidence that he or any of that negotiating team who by the way, I think couldn’t negotiate their way out of a paper bag.

"Clean up your act" nghĩa là gì?

"Clean up one's/its act" có nghĩa là cải thiện tính cách của ai hoặc cải thiện chức năng của cái gì.

Ví dụ
President Donald Trump is right about San Francisco. It is, as he said, "a total disaster" (thảm họa toàn diện) that needs to clean up its act.

The agency is now calling on Governor (thống đốc) Gavin Newsom and local leaders to clean up their act, but California officials believe the sudden urgency (khẩn cấp) is not in the best interest of Californians.

While Reddit has long been known as a more controversial corner (nơi gây tranh cãi) of the web - where largely, anything goes - as the platform seeks to maximize (tối đa hóa) its business opportunities, it's been forced to clean up its act, and address concerns around its hosted discussions.

"Act up" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by La Afterman from Pexels

"Act up" có nghĩa là (người) hành động không phù hợp, xấu tính; (vật) giở chứng, có vấn đề.  Còn "act up to something" có nghĩa là hành động cho xứng đáng với điều gì.

Ví dụ
They say their older Apple devices began conveniently (thuận tiện) "acting up" soon after the tech giant announced the iPhone 11 earlier this week.

But Lindsay’s attempts to look shocked at reveals of Australian celebs isn’t the only acting the star has been doing, with reports she has been acting up on set.

Although he was still acting up some as he started his sophomore year (năm thứ hai ở trường học), the problems steadily diminished (giảm dần) until by the spring semester he was no longer failing in anything, was not getting into trouble in school or elsewhere, and he and his mother were on excellent, loving terms.

"Have a fix" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Jon Ly on Unsplash

"Have a fix" có nghĩa là thu được/kiếm được/đạt được một lượng cần thiết của thứ gì đó thường là những thứ mà người ta quá ham mê hoặc đã nghiện nên bắt buộc phải tìm.

Ví dụ
But at least twice a year, I had to have a fix of greasy (béo ngậy), salty, crunchy (giòn) fried chicken seasoned with (ướp) jalapeño juice and a hefty side of dill pickle (giấm) chips (khoai tây rán).

If you’re the sort of person who still believes President Donald Trump’s promises on health care, there’s probably nothing at this point that could dissuade (khuyên can/can ngăn) you from the notion that Republicans have a “fix” at the ready to replace “Obamacare.”

Each customer gets to choose from a variety of sparkle (lấp lánh) colors, and is guaranteed to leave with a smile, even on their worst day. “We have people come in simply because they just need to have a fix of magic. There is just a lot of bad stuff that goes on outside in the world and people need a safe haven.”

"Act of faith" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Rodolfo Clix from Pexels

"Act of faith" = hành động chứng minh đức tin/ niềm tin của mình vào tôn giáo hoặc điều gì đó/ ai đó.

Ví dụ
Since gods were ambivalent (lẫn lộn), rituals (nghi lễ) were an important part in the belief. Rituals required an act of faith and performing them helped confirm a belief in a god.

It would have taken enormous courage for those men to risk their lives (mạo hiểm bản thân) by blowing the shofar (một loại kèn). Such an act of faith during the war was hardly an isolated episode.

“I’ve been here a long time. Somebody needed to do this a long time ago. Mostly, I’m excited about the quality of the players. This is going to work.” There are promising signs (dấu hiệu đầy hứa hẹn) that he’s right. But it’s still very much an act of faith.

"Be like rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic" nghĩa là gì?

"Be like rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic" = Chẳng khác gì việc xếp lại những chiếc ghế dài cho hành khách trên boong tàu Titanic -> Làm một việc mà kết quả cuối cùng lại vô ích và không quan trọng.

Ví dụ
As I wrote in my post-mortem (sau khi chết) of the 2015 election, the results consist of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, instead of seeing clearly the iceberg lying straight ahead.

I’m all for cutting red tape (dải băng) if I thought this was more than simply rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. The real problem starts at the top with Marshman, who over the past few years while serving as interim (lâm thời) CEO, vice-chair and board chair has sat on his hands and did nothing to improve the organization.

In such circumstances, it would be prudent (thận trọng, khôn ngoan), even necessary, and certainly not profligate (không hoang phí), to turn to counter-cyclical (ngược chu kỳ), expansionary fiscal policy (chính sách tài khóa mở rộng). To do otherwise would be like rearranging the deck-chairs on the Titanic as it was about to crash into the iceberg (tảng băng).

"Be like putty in my hands" nghĩa là gì?

"Be like putty in someone's hands" = dễ bị ảnh hưởng, dễ bị điều khiển bởi ai.

Ví dụ
From the moment she emerges (hiện ra, nổi bật lên) as Lucky, she seems so sure the audience is putty in her hands that it becomes true.

Sometimes I worry I’m just being used but then I see her again and I’m like putty in her hands. I’m financially tied to her (bị cô ẩy xỏ mũi) now since I gave her that loan (khoản vay nợ). I feel such a mess and I’m not thinking straight.

After a bit of watching this dance, Kasia asked me to come over to the fence (hàng rào). She asked me “Who are you, and what did you do to Sundance?” Believe it or not, this previously antsy (lo lắng, hồi hộp), animated horse was now putty in my hands! How did that happen?! Well, here´s how… because I allowed myself to be vulnerable (dễ tổn thương), to be authentic (chân thật) and to speak from the heart.

"A hard act to follow" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by David McEachan from Pexels

"A hard/tough act to follow" = hành động khó mà theo kịp -> một người hoặc một nhóm người quá thành công hoặc làm quá tốt đến mức khiến người khác khó lòng theo kịp.

Ví dụ
Dave will be a hard act to follow, but Ken is unquestionably (không nghi ngờ gì) a seasoned, growth orientated (định hướng tăng trưởng) business leader.

Lagerfeld’s daringly inventive silhouettes (sáng tạo hình bóng táo bạo) are a hard act to follow — and this display, though both wearable and highly chic (rất sang trọng) — fell short of the sunshine.

He has been a trusted advisor (cố vấn đáng tin cậy), a linchpin (cốt cán) of the university’s leadership team, and an unfailing (bền bỉ) voice of integrity (liêm chính) and excellence. He will be a tough act to follow, but he is also the first person to point out that the university can always benefit from new perspectives and new talents.

"Be like painting the Forth Bridge" nghĩa là gì?

"Be like painting the Forth Bridge" = Chẳng khác gì sơn cầu Forth Bridge, cây cầu mất nhiều thời gian để hoàn thành và cứ xây liên miên -> Xác định một công việc có thể sẽ không bao giờ được hoàn thành.

Ví dụ
Cleaning the windows, inside and out, will be like painting the Forth Bridge, a continuous process (quá trình liên tục).

‘It grows so rapidly in the hot weather and is tricky (phức tạp, rắc rối) to collect because the individual pieces are so tiny (nhỏ bé). ‘The teams say it’s bit like painting the Forth Bridge, as no sooner have they finished an area than it’s bloomed (nở rộ) again.

“Vale Park will be a labour of love (việc làm xuất phát từ niềm say mê, chứ không vì lợi lộc) for a very long time,” said Shanahan. “There’s a plan for every stand and for everything inside every stand. But it’s like painting the Forth Bridge, once you finish you start again.

"Stage fright" nghĩa là gì?

"Stage fright" = nỗi sợ sân khấu -> sợ đứng trước khản giả hoặc chỗ đông người để biểu diễn/ thuyết trình...

Ví dụ
Koyote's Shinji recalled (nhớ lại) the difficulties she faced because of her extreme (cực kỳ) stage fright in the past.

Desperate (liều mạng) to pay off her debts and provide for (chu cấp) her children, she's forced to take the gigs (hợp đồng biểu diễn) in the face of destructive anxiety and stage fright.

The reality TV star, 22, has now opened up about her severe stage fright in a candid (thẳng thắn) post on Instagram ahead of her singing debut. Zara announced her Celebrity X Factor news with her 1.2 million followers in a lengthy post which revealed how music has always been her passion and how school bullies (bắt nạt học đường) caused her stage fright.

"Be like Fort Knox" = Như kho dự trữ vàng Fort Knox -> Được canh giữ cẩn mật, khóa thật chặt, không thể vào hay tiếp cận được.

Ví dụ
A bill establishing a Texas bullion depository (kho chứa nén vàng), like Fort Knox in Kentucky, passed in the state Senate Tuesday. It passed in the House earlier this month.

“These places will be like Fort Knox (in regard to security) — I don't want to restrict (ngăn cấm) them so much that Ballwin ends up with two of them and we have none.”

“Security procedures (biện pháp, thủ tục) are also to be tightened up (thắt chặt) at the site and it is being made secure ahead of the royal arrivals (những người thuộc hoàng gia đến). “Once the work has finished, Frogmore Cottage will be a fantastic family home fit for the Duke and Duchess but it will be like Fort Knox. “Now all applications have been approved and work is now quickly being undertaken.”

"Go on the stage" = tiến lên sân khấu -> diễn, đóng kịch /trở thành diễn viên.

Ví dụ
So, John has always wanted to go on the stage.

I only happened to go on the stage in that act that night to see the stage manager, Mr. Wright.

I was just nicely past sixteen, but even I dared not yet lay claim to seventeen, and I was to go on the stage for the serious Shakespearian mother of a star.

I should not go on the stage in clothes the counterpart (giống hệt) of his. I proposed if he would lend me a coat I would put it on; but as it wanted only five minutes of the time, any thing more was impossible.

"Be long in the tooth" nghĩa là gì?

"Be long in the tooth" = (lợi tụt hết nên) răng (trông) dài ra -> già rồi/có tuổi rồi, không còn con nít nữa.

Ví dụ
"The bull market may be long in the tooth, but the technicals of low unemployment, low inflation (lạm phát) and positive GDP numbers don't support a pullback (đẩy lùi, làm chậm tiến)," said Jon Ulin, managing principal at Ulin & Co. Wealth Management.

Next Gerry claims he remembers when Iran was ‘very friendly’ with the US. He must be long in the tooth as this was when we still pulled the strings of the puppet (con rối, kẻ bù nhìn) Shah. Does he remember the Iran hostage (con tin, đồ thế chấp) situation of 40 years ago? The Khobar Towers in 1996?

Sure, HBO tried to sell you on Big Little Lies once Game of Thrones was over, and sure, the show is...fine, but it's got nothing on GoT where you're concerned. So what are you supposed to do, wait for George R.R. Martin to finish his books and then create another universe (vũ trụ) which HBO will transform into little screen fodder? Heck no! You'd be long in the tooth before that happened.

"Stage-door Johnny" nghĩa là gì?

"Em à, nhà em ở đâu thế?" Photo by Hannah Nelson from Pexels

"Stage-door Johnny" có từ "stage-door" là cửa vào của diễn viên (ở sau sân khấu). Từ này chỉ người đứng chờ (ở khu vực cửa ra vào) hòng gây sự chú ý tới người khác (tìm kiếm mối quan hệ yêu đương lãng mạn), người đang muốn tán tỉnh ai.

Ví dụ
In a group interview to promote the play, she recalled Mr Rush saying that he "hand-picked us" (chọn kỹ lưỡng). "He said he had a stage-door Johnny crush on me. It made me feel uncomfortable and disrespected (không thoải mái và thiếu tôn trọng)."

This production marks the first time Rush has worked with Norvill, however. "I saw EJ play Ophelia in Hamlet for the MTC [Melbourne Theatre Company] and I developed an immediate stage-door Johnny crush," he confesses. "But you won't print that, will you?"

I know a stage-door Johnny when I see one, and I know a tough guy. This was no Johnny. I had my reasons not to look at the facade (vẻ ngoài, mặt tiền) of the Duke of York's and perhaps that's how I came to notice him down the alleyway on the south side of the theater.

"Rip you to pieces" nghĩa là gì?

Úm ba la, kẻ đứng trước mặt ta sẽ bị tan thành trăm mảnh!!! Photo by Alexey Alabuzhin on Unsplash

"Rip someone or something to pieces" có nghĩa là xé ai hoặc xé cái gì thành các mảnh nhỏ. Ngoài ra, cụm từ này còn có nghĩa là làm thiệt hại (đến ai hoặc cái gì) một cách nghiêm trọng, gây náo loạn; lên án, mắng nhiếc ai đó hoặc điều gì một cách gay gắt.

Ví dụ
A mum has spoken on how the Jeremy Kyle Show has ruined her life following a tragic (bi thảm, thảm thương) death on the controversial (mang tính chất tranh luận) show. Crissy Kenny, 59, said her husband disappeared after he appeared on the show despite her warning: 'He'll rip you to pieces', reports Birmingham Live.

In No Man’s Sky VR there’s just no way to set aside (gạt sang một bên) how cool it feels to watch an alien landscape stretch out in front of you as you cruise the atmosphere in your shuttle, or blast into faster than light speed once you get off the tutorial planet for the first time. The landscapes look stunning (tuyệt vời, gây ấn tượng sâu sắc), and the crazy creatures trying to rip you to pieces are a hundred times more intimidating (đáng kinh hãi, đáng sợ) and terrifying when they’re inches from your face.

Soon Metro Police, CROW, Monkey Helpline KZN and the Kloof and Highway SPCA joined the rescue team (đội cứu hộ). "One does not go and pick up a Bushpig (lợn hoang Nam Phi). They can rip you to pieces! The SPCA didn't hesitate (do dự, lưỡng lự) in saying they could help, and their vets and director (Lauren, Kerrie, Barbara) came down the hill to our aid (sự viện trợ). One of the CROW staff noticed what looked like a drag mark running alongside the road, and into where it was stranded. It looked like it had been hit by a car, and dragged itself to where it was, falling in its traumatized (bị thương) state," Evans explained.

"Dig up dirt" nghĩa là gì?

Tui không có "đào bới" gì hết. Photo courtesy: Pastor Chris
"Dig up dirt on somebody" = đào bới (tìm) đồ dơ bẩn ở ai đó -> tìm hiểu và tiết lộ thông tin tổn thất cho ai đó. Tiếng Việt cũng có thành ngữ tương tự là "vạch lá tìm sâu", "bới lông tìm vết".

Ví dụ
They hired a detective firm to dig up dirt on their rival.

The White House has released a five-page “transcript” (bản ghi) that proves President Donald Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate – dig up dirt – on his top political opponent, Joe Biden, and Biden’s son Hunter. The so-called “transcript” – really a compilation of notes taken by aides (sĩ quan) who may have listened in on the call, also shows Trump promising U.S. assistance if the Ukraine president fulfilled (thực hiện) his wishes.

Fair enough. There is always two sides to every story, right? Well, what Daniel failed to realize during that absurd (ngớ ngẩn) explanation is that the internet will stop at nothing to dig up dirt, and another clip of the same failed two-point conversion was released on Thursday morning. This clip is from the sideline angle and folks (mọi người), lemme tell ya, it does NOT look good for your boy Kash.

"Have the/an edge on somebody" -> có lợi thế hơn ai đó.

Ví dụ
At least that's something we humans still have the edge on.

Mark Orttung, Nexient’s chief executive, said that offshoring (ngoài khơi) worked fine for certain types of work, such as short-term projects, but less well on projects where requirements change over time and collaboration (cộng tác) is more important. American workers can also have an edge on projects that require them to understand the specifics (đặc trưng) of the business: how the American health care system works, for example, or what customers expect from a particular brand.

Why Sony chose today to shine some light on PS Now is no mystery: With Google Stadia set to launch next month and Microsoft's Project xCloud beginning its beta program this month, cloud gaming is stepping into the next phase of its evolution. "Sony wants to make sure they give the perception (suy nghĩ) they're not letting competition get a leg up (có lợi thế)," says David Cole, CEO of research firm (công ty) DFC Intelligence. "I talk to a lot of investors who don't necessarily know the gaming industry that well, but they see Google as this huge potential threat. Now Sony can say that not only are they not going to lose on pricing, but they have the edge on content."

"Take its toll" có từ "toll" là thiệt hại -> gây ra thiệt hại cho ai đó hoặc vật gì đó, đặc biệt là trong thời gian dài.

Ví dụ
Working overtime takes its toll on my happiness.

The bleak (ảm đạm) manufacturing figures (chỉ số) from IHS Markit’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) also suggested that the crisis in the export-dependent industrial sector is starting to take its toll on other sectors of Europe’s largest economy.

A month's worth of food indulgence (đắm mình) can take its toll. To keep the party going while burning off some of those extra calories, head to one of Sydney's best bars for a weekend boogie (nhảy theo nhạc rock). Just a five minute walk from West Hotel is the newly opened Prince of York. This multi-level venue (địa điểm) offers a basement dance hall with a disco ball, giant tequila punch (rượu pân) bowls and a 2am licence — and dancing on tables is encouraged. If you're keen to go a bit further afield (đi xa), head to the dancing mecca (thánh địa) that is Oxford Street, where you're sure to have an ace (tuyệt vời) time at Stonewall Hotel, Universal Sydney, Oxford Art Factory and The Cliff Dive.

"Puff piece" nghĩa là gì?

Sao nãy giờ toàn mấy bài gì đâu không vậy? Photo by BBH Singapore on Unsplash

"Puff piece" có từ puff là lời tâng bốc láo, lời quảng cáo khuếch khoác -> cụm từ này nghĩa là bài viết mà chỉ toàn đưa ra những lời khen ngợi, tâng bốc quá mức mà thiếu đi những lời bình phẩm sâu sắc.

Ví dụ
Oh look. One of BBC R4 Today's resident Tories, Nick Robinson, doing a puff piece on Boris Johnson. Astonishing (ngạc nhiên, lạ lùng) that this mendacious (điêu, sai sự thật), philandering, lying, cheating sociopath (người bệnh tâm thần) is still revered by the BBC. What a sad reflection (điều gây tiếng xấu) on a once great institution.

Part of my disappointment stemmed surely from (xuất phát từ) so much pre-publicity: if I read one puff piece in last week’s supplements for how Engle had tracked down Cohen where Interpol and hired hitmen had failed I must have read a full two dozen: when the BBC hype machine gets wind of a Thomas Crown-style global chase, it doesn’t know how to let go. After so much ramping up, it was almost bound to fall short.

"I was offered a job on three times my salary, that's a fact. I brought it to the (FAI) board. I didn't take the job, I didn't want the job, I am very happy in this job," he told the team from Sky Sports in 2013 when the channel did a feature on him. That puff piece on Delaney included a scene where the cameras rolled as Delaney put in his standard daily school-run phone call to his twins, had the news that Clones Town FC had decided to name their ground after him and also informed its UK-based audience that Delaney was about to head off to the US for a trip which included a meeting with Barack Obama.

"Piece of crap" = mẩu chuyện tào lao -> cụm từ này nghĩa là (ai đó hoặc cái gì) hoàn toàn vô dụng, đáng khinh; vô ích, vô giá trị.

Ví dụ
In his zealous (hăng hái, nhiệt huyết) pursuit (sự theo đuổi, cuộc tìm kiếm) of mega-deals, Bob Iger has not always met with warm welcomes. When he first showed Steve Jobs one of his pet projects, Jobs bluntly (thẳng thừng) dismissed (vứt bỏ, không thừa nhận) it as “a piece of crap.”

Generally, fan-fiction writers’ strengths are effusively celebrated, and any feedback on their weaknesses is very gently conveyed. Reviews (bài phê bình) of fan fiction are overwhelmingly positive—Aragon and Davis found that out of a sample of 4,500 reviews on fanfiction.net, only 1 percent were what they called “non-constructive negative” reviews, or “flames” (such as: “I never thought that human spawn could create such a horrible piece of crap”).

Angry Virginia residents confronted (đe dọa) the Warren County Board of Supervisors Tuesday for the first time since every member was indicted (kết tội) for failing to act when taxpayer money was mismanaged (quản lý tồi). Residents packed (tập trung thành nhóm người) the board meeting after learning the supervisors were going to vote on whether to have taxpayers (người đóng thuế) pay for the legal defense. “Whoever suggested this, I just want to say, it’s like a piece of crap,” supervisor candidate Leslie Mathews said. “You have a choice today as to if you will take the citizens’ money against our will,” resident Melanie Salins said.

"Cut a sorry figure" = cắt bộ dạng thương hại -> nghĩa là > nghĩa là ăn mặc nhếch nhác/xuất hiện trong bộ dạng hoặc gây ấn tượng xấu/tệ hại khiến người khác cảm thấy mất mặt hoặc (nếu đi/đứng cùng) không mang lại lợi ích gì cho họ.

Ví dụ
The conditions took a huge toll (thiệt hại). Only 46 of the 182 starters crossed the finish line. Among the early victims, defending world champion Alejandro Valverde cut a sorry figure as he pulled out with 100km to go. Ireland's Dan Martin and Belgian Philippe Gilbert, world champion in 2012, former (cựu) Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas and reigning Vuelta champion Primoz Roglic of Slovenia, all dropped out.

But, at Monza, the traditional home-track of Ferrari, Vettel cut a sorry figure after spinning out on his own and earning himself an embarrassing (đáng xấu hổ) 10-second penalty that saw him relegated (xuống hạng) to dead last.

The Olympic qualification was at stake in three categories (hạng mục) but all three Indians cut a sorry figure as Manish (67kg), Sunil Kumar (87kg) and Ravi (97kg) exited without a fight.

But apparently, doing this could actually do more harm than good.

James O’Loan, pharmacist at online doctor service Doctor-4-U, said putting toothpaste on your intimate areas can lead to burning (bỏng) and scarring (sẹo); it won’t do anything at all to combat premature ejaculation (xuất tinh sớm) or erectile dysfunction (rối loạn cương dương),

"The peppermint oils (dầu bạc hà) and other chemicals in toothpaste, including bleaching agents (chất tẩy trắng), can be extremely irritating (ngứa, tấy lên, rát) to sensitive skin (da nhạy cảm)...
