"Spin doctor" nghĩa là gì?

Luật sư-chính trị gia Rodrigo Duterte sau này trở thành Tổng thống Philippines Photo by Denniz Futalan from Pexels

'Spin doctor' = từ này thường dùng trong quan hệ công chúng và chính trị, để chỉ những người giống như phát ngôn viên của một đảng phái hay ủng hộ một tư tưởng chính trị nào đó bằng cách đưa ra, tuyền đạt những thông tin theo hướng thuận lợi cho đảng phái đó.

Ví dụ
Stadlen, who was Najib's spin doctor for nine years, was slapped (trừng phạt) with two money laundering (rửa tiền) charges (buộc tội) involving RM14.3 million by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Mr Connolly, who was formerly head of the HSE's national press office, is on secondment from Fáilte Ireland. Ms Doherty sought the approval of Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe's department to ensure he could work as her spin doctor on the same salary he was on in the State's tourism agency.

Prince Andrew may have received a major blow to his effort to rehabilitate his reputation as he continues to be publicly excoriated for his friendship with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Jason Stein, the master “spin doctor” hired a month ago to craft Andrew’s communications strategy and to repair his damaged reputation, has already quit, the Daily Mail reported over the weekend.

"Doctors make the worst patients" nghĩa là gì?

cùng nhau hội chẩn Photo by EVG photos from Pexels

'Doctors make the worst patients' = bác sĩ chính là bệnh nhân khó tính nhất -> rất khó đưa ra trợ giúp hay lời khuyên trong lĩnh vực mà người đó có chuyên môn vì họ thường có suy nghĩ mình biết nhiều hơn, làm tốt hơn người khác.

Ví dụ
The joke is that doctors make the worst patients, but the Chiefs offensive lineman (trọng tài biên) assured everyone gathered after Tuesday’s minicamp practice that wasn’t the case as he rehabbed (phục hồi) last season.

While it is often said that doctors make the worst patients, might it also be true that well-being practitioners – those of us who research and teach others how to improve their well-being – are the people least likely to be taking care of themselves?

They say doctors make the worst patients. Whether that’s true or not, as a doctor, you know that stress and depression (trầm cảm) can wreak havoc (tàn phá) on a person’s immune system. So, it’s a great thing to keep track of. If you’re sick all the time, and it’s not just exposure to germs (mầm bệnh, vi trùng), it might be infection from the job itself—a definite sign it’s time to find health in another position.

"Pay him back with interest" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Dmitry Demidko on Unsplash

"Pay (someone) back with interest" = trả ai cả vốn lẫn lãi -> nghĩa là trừng phạt hoặc trả thù ai bằng hành động xấu, việc làm có hại hơn nhiều so với những gì ban đầu người đó đã gây ra.

Ví dụ
A couple of weeks ago, Ryan took Gary's money which he discovered in an old desk. Thinking it was left in there from the previous owner, Ryan spent the money. After discovering it was Ryan who stole his cash, Gary told him he needed to pay him back with interest.

“I started off in Brooklyn. My father gave me a small loan (khoản cho mượn) of a million dollars. I came into Manhattan, and I had to pay him back, and I had to pay him back with interest. But I came into Manhattan and I started buying properties (bất động sản), and I did great.”

A Pennsylvania Commonwealth court ruling issued Friday restored Jerry Sandusky's pension (lương hưu). It said he was wrongly stripped of his benefits earned when he formally retired -- years before the specific child abuse sex crimes that have him serving up to 60 years in prison. The Pennsylvania State Employees Retirement System was ordered to not only restore Sandusky's pension, but to pay him back with interest for the nearly three years of monthly benefits that were denied.

"Pay (someone) a backhanded compliment" có từ backhanded nghĩa là nửa đùa nửa thật, hai nghĩa -> cụm từ này nghĩa là khen ai một cách châm chọc (lời khen có thể hiểu là khen cũng có thể là chê bai).

Ví dụ
Last year’s edition was topped by “Get Out” and “Twin Peaks: The Return,” a TV series that many critics (nhà phê bình) chose to pay a backhanded compliment to by claiming it as a movie.

Rafael Van Der Vaart, Ronaldo's old teammate from Real Madrid, has chosen now to stick the knife in, or pay a backhanded compliment, depending on your reading, suggesting that the 31-year-old has little of interest about him.

Bill Donohue of the Catholic League, a Catholic anti-defamation organization, says he finds the candles more silly than offensive. “By definition, a celebrity doesn’t need a PR presence, so the likely motivating force is narcissism (tính tự yêu mình),” he says. “By ripping off Catholic iconography (sự mô tả bằng hình tượng), these celebs pay a backhanded compliment to the Catholic Church in their quest for notoriety (sự tai tiếng).”

"Pay (someone) back in (someone's) own coin" or "pay (someone) in the same coin" = trả lại chính đồng xu của ai đó -> cụm từ này nghĩa là ăn miếng trả miếng.

Ví dụ
“We shall arrest (bắt giữ) him and pay him back in his own coin in our own way immediately he steps down as the governor because his recent action of killing MASSOB members will heavily affect APGA chances of winning this election.”

If you are having doubts (nghi ngờ) about your husband because of his past actions that hurt you and you find it difficult to trust him anymore, seek counseling. Don’t engage in activities like spying on (dò xét, bí mật theo dõi) him and trying so hard to pay him back in his own coin.

Your boyfriend is under the impression that ignoring an issue will make it go away, which a surprisingly large number of people think is a good way of dealing with things. I'm not sure how he can change, especially if you are always the one to crumble first. Why not pay him back in his own coin and avoid speaking too, just to see how long he can take it?

"On (something) a kick" = Đang rất hứng thú, đầy nhiệt huyết và có cảm xúc mãnh liệt với cái gì.

Ví dụ
"Lately, I'm on a kick where I've been watching a lot of Jeff Beck,” Goodwin said. “I've always liked him. He is one of the few rock star/guitar.

Lately I’ve been on a kick for trying not necessarily new places, but at least new to me places. And one place in particular I’ve been passing by for as long as I can remember.

And not-yet-declared candidate (ứng cử viên chưa được công bố) Sherrod Brown struck similar notes in a speech to the New Hampshire Young Democrats Saturday night. Brown also did something else very smart, something I’m on a kick about and will write a hundred times between now and the end of the primary season next year: He talked about small towns.

"Look for a dog to kick" = Tìm con chó nào để đá -> Tìm ai đó để đổ lỗi hoặc khiển trách, đặc biệt là nhắm vào những người không làm gì sai hay chẳng gây ra lỗi lầm gì.

Ví dụ
I sure hope you have a dog to kick at night." Bill Moyers: "I began reading the Columbia Journalism Review almost with its first edition.

Democrat's gaining control of the House and the possible investigations that might follow, was looking for a fight to pick, or a “dog” to kick.

"Kick with the other foot" = Đá bằng chân khác -> Thuộc về một tôn giáo/niềm tin khác nhau, đặc biệt là giữa Tin Lành với Công giáo. Nghĩa thứ hai là chỉ sự đồng tính luyến ái.

Ví dụ
But he showed little in the way of contrition, or embarrassment, for teaming up, no matter how briefly, with politicians who kick with the other foot and whose party he was not so long ago accusing of holding a gun to the head of democracy with a threat to return to violence if they didn't get their own way in government.

“There would be four whole rosaries (bài kinh rôze) said by the time we’d get to Lourdes. I remember once sitting between Rocci Allen and Grant Robinson, Ulster boys who ‘kick with the other foot’ in terms of religion, during a recitation (kể lại) of the rosary. And they were muttering (nói khẽ, lẩm bẩm), ‘Jesus, good job me auld fella (người bạn cũ) can’t see me now.’ ”

“We’ve got a lot of us talking to people in the studio, we have to cut that down to the actual story, because Andy and I have never heard the story before, we ask a lot of irrelevant (không liên quan) questions that in hindsight (đùa cợt, nhận thức muộn) are just nuisances (phiền toái) and hand breaks all the time. But some of them work,” Blake explains. For the pair, it’s like learning to kick with the other foot: challenging but rewarding.

"Kick up a row" = Làm om sòm lên -> Gây chuyện cãi lộn, phàn nàn về cái gì với ai/lớn giọng hoặc gắt gỏng lên.

Ví dụ
“The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has a team to kick up a row at the CHP ahead of the party congress,” the CHP leader said.

In what could kick up a row, Madhya Pradesh minister Sajan Kumar hit back at the BJP for criticising the government for transferring 46 sniffer (đánh hơi) dogs and their handlers and said the BJP has ‘dog-like mentality.

But a senior Congress leader said on condition of anonymity (nặc danh) that an expansion may also cause more discontent (bất mãn). “The whole exercise is fraught with the risk (đầy nguy hiểm) that those who miss out might kick up a row,” the leader said. The Congress has 80 MLAs and the JD(S) 37 in a 224-member house.

"Kick the wheels" = Đá bánh xe -> Kiểm tra, xem xét ai/cái gì để biết có đạt yêu cầu hoặc tiêu chuẩn chất lượng hay không.

Ví dụ
“People like to go to car showrooms and kick the wheels and sit in the car,” he added.

But social impact activists are starting to kick the wheels of blockchain technologies (công nghệ chuỗi khối), and there are reasons for them to like what they see -- plus some causes for caution.

However, the minister said his department will have to "kick the wheels on any strategy (chiến lược) that's developed by RTÉ". "I need to see that in context and I need to see an overall plan brought forward by RTÉ to see how they are going to scale out their future," he added.

Ví dụ
"We were expecting them to kick the tin for a further $16 million. They're not," he said. "They've come up with a hypothesis (giả thuyết) that this is a Commonwealth biosecurity (an toàn sinh học) issue. There's no proof of that whatsoever."

My brother Matt lost his battle against brain cancer in October 2017 and Saturday marks the second annual charity race (giải chạy gây quỹ từ thiện hằng năm) day so let’s hope we can back a few winners on Saturday and kick the tin to help brain cancer research.

“The graduates have already had a taste of the real life, having finished their studies mid last year and tried to get employed. Many know by now that the world can be harsh (cay nghiệt) and unforgiving. I hope many are tightening their belts in readiness for the struggle ahead. Some may have decided to kick the tin down the road by continuing with school. And others may have given up altogether. My prayer is that there are more of the first and less of the last kind,” he said.

"Plow them back into" nghĩa là gì?

Đầu tư vào mặt hàng này chưa bao giờ hết hot! Photo by Sander Dalhuisen on Unsplash

"Plow something back into something" or "plow something back" nghĩa là tái đầu tư (lợi nhuận vào một ngành kinh doanh chẳng hạn).

Ví dụ
He kicked things off by expounding (trình bày chi tiết, giải thích) on the virtues of a strong middle class, whose fate, he said, depended on “what companies decide to do with their profits”: invest them in “research, training, equipment” or plow them back into “shareholder (cổ đông) payout.”

That happened, too, in the 1980s, when Reagan and the Republicans slashed (cắt bớt) taxes on the wealthy, both income taxes (thuế thu nhập) and capital gains (thuế lãi về vốn), and the rich people took big chunks of these windfalls (vận may bất ngờ) and began to plow them back into the cause of electing and reelecting Republicans who would cut their taxes even more.

You need to listen to the people who are making the change, and listen to the people affected by the change. That doesn’t mean you value all feedback equally, or give the people who are complaining more time. But look hard for the useful nuggets in what people tell you, and plow them back into your plans. In a way, this is the extended version of engaging your stakeholders (No. 4).

"Kick when they are down" nghĩa là gì?

Mình buồn vì tim mình đau, mình buồn thì ai thấu đâu? Photo by Yoann Boyer

"Kick when they are down" = Đả kích/đá khi người ta tuyệt vọng -> Hãm hại, gây tổn thương hoặc lăng mạ khi người ta đang thất bại, đau buồn hoặc gặp khó khăn.

Ví dụ
As if things weren't bad enough at Villa Park, now West Brom fans have give them an almighty (hết sức lớn) kick when they are down. The latest image doing the rounds on social media shows a banner displayed at Villa Park mocking (chế nhạo) the club for it's current troubles.

Warburton, who is a Land Rover ambassador, continues: “Our defence coach Shaun Edwards said – and this is the rugby education you need as a young player – ‘what did you drop back for?’, and he [Williams] said ‘I thought they were going to kick’, and Shaun said ‘why would Australia kick when they are down by three points with two minutes to play? They are obviously going to run’.

Jeff Toale, funeral director for Toale Brothers Funeral Homes, says his worst moments came when holding services for “multiple family members passed away from overdose (dùng quá liều thuốc). It’s certainly sad, and there is a lot of defeat from the surviving family. Usually you see family members who have tried to help get their loved one on the right track, and then it’s the ultimate kick when they are down. Family members ask, ‘What could I have done more?’ But in reality, they did all they can. It’s just a crushing blow.”

"An army marches on its stomach" nghĩa là gì?

Không cho ăn thì lấy đâu ra sức mà chiến? Photo by British Library on Unsplash

"An army marches on its stomach" nghĩa là một đội quân muốn có sức mạnh chiến đấu, trước tiên phải no bụng đã, có thực mới vực được đạo. Câu nói được cho là của Frederick Đại đế và Napoleon I. Tiếng Pháp là "c'est la soupe qui fait le soldat".

Ví dụ
“An army marches on its stomach, and there’s no doubt about it feed your guys well and they’ll do anything for you… the same applies for shipping,” he stated.

The expression “an army marches on its stomach” actually is far more important to the outcomes of great battles, of great military victories (chiến thắng vĩ đại) and defeats (đánh bại).

An army marches on its stomach, said Napoleon. Today, however, it’s coffee that keeps young people moving, according to Nestlé, which has spotted opportunities in the out-of-home coffee machine sector.

In the early hours of Tuesday, Doncaster Council (Hội đồng) tweeted: "Just as an army marches on its stomach, so do the superb (tuyệt vời) emergency crews (đội cứu hộ) who we've provided with essential food and drinks supplies through the night."

"Pit of your stomach" nghĩa là gì?

"Pit of one's stomach" hay "the pit of the stomach" = lõm thượng vị, phần giữa của dạ dày, chỗ dễ bị ảnh hưởng khi con người cảm thấy căng thẳng, sợ hãi, hay những cảm giác mạnh mẽ nào đó.

Ví dụ
The pit in my stomach came from standing on the highest structure around. It didn’t look that high from the ground.

It's like an all-consuming dread (sợ hãi) that hits you at, like, the pit of your stomach, reliving the most traumatic (đau thương) thing... It was cathartic (thuốc tẩy). But it was hard.

Just as you’ve triple checked your basket, the sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach comes over you as the ‘oops something went wrong, please refresh the page (tải lại trang) to try that again’ message pops up.

It just gave me a pit in my stomach. This is not to say that a man might want to see that. I just think I felt very much a responsibility (trách nhiệm) not to perpetuate (duy trì) this idea of disposable female characters, because of how it makes me feel when I watch that.

"Cast-iron stomach" nghĩa là gì?

Có những người thở thôi cũng mập, còn có người thì ăn mãi chả béo. Photo by Adrienn from Pexels

"Cast-iron stomach" = cái bụng bằng gang -> bụng khỏe, hệ tiêu hóa tốt, có thể ăn bất kỳ thứ gì.

Ví dụ
The man clearly had a cast-iron stomach. It was only in the last few years that his body finally let him down.

I was 100 % compliant with the stipulation (quy định): “All judges have been tested for cast-iron stomachs and have sworn under oath (tuyên thệ) to have no vegetarian tendencies (xu hướng ăn chay).”

Relph's favorite Slurpee flavor is banana, but he sometimes switched to Cherry Limeade. To battle flavor fatigue (mệt mỏi) and sugar shock, Relph turned to an age-old remedy (phương thuốc): Water. “I have a cast-iron stomach,” he said.

Initially, the commissioning (phân công nhiệm vụ, ủy thác) meetings, where ideas were discussed, were held around a small table there, and were sometimes so long that, as an editor commented, one needed a cast-iron stomach to survive them.

"Put them to the back of your mind" nghĩa là gì?

"Put (something) to the back of (someone's) mind" = nén điều gì ra phía sau tâm trí của ai đó -> cụm từ nghĩa là cố gắng quên đi điều làm mình khó chịu, cố gắng lờ đi điều gì.

Ví dụ
"You have to try to forget about all the history. It is not of benefit if you are going on the court worrying about those sort of things. You have to put them to the back of your mind.

You may need to be more aware of things you are doing without thinking and exercise some more self-control (sự tự chủ, sự bình tĩnh). If you are being repeatedly indulgent (khoan dung) then it may be wise to consider the negative consequences if you have put them to the back of your mind.

AS I'VE been reacquainting myself with the garden after a hiatus (sự gián đoạn) of several months, I've also been reacquainting myself with a few old foes. You tend to forget about them over winter -- or hopefully put them to the back of your mind -- but come April they 'spring' from nowhere to remind us of how challenging gardening can sometimes be.

"Stroke of business" nghĩa là gì?

Đông khách tới nỗi pha chế muốn rụng cả tay!! Photo by Brent Gorwin on Unsplash

"Stroke of business" có stroke nghĩa là hành động có hiệu quả -> cụm từ này nghĩa là sự buôn may bán lời; một món phát tài.

Ví dụ
The Echo wrote of the new Everton winger (cầu thủ biên): ‘He needs to curb his excessive dribbling (sự rê bóng) and needs to be “hearty” at times. Still, he is a player whose style should fit Everton, and the club has done a good stroke of business in gaining his transfer.’

While this secretive tactic is a stroke of business genius, the adoption of secrecy in large vessel procurement (sự thu mua) is concerning. Frankly, this rectitude stymies (ngăn cản) public efforts to keep the Navy honest, eliminating the opportunity for the Navy to evaluate well-thought-through criticisms from rival shipbuilders (người đóng tàu).

His costume at this time was elegant, we might say imposing (gây ấn tượng mạnh mẽ). A conical peaked hat, a long bluish (hơi xanh) robe (áo choàng), a green kerchief (khăn choàng cổ), and loose trousers, made people think he was a saint from the far countries beyond the Indus. Not content with this, however, he did while at Nonar a stroke of business which ultimately brought him to the gallows.

"Kick down the ladder" nghĩa là gì?

Sorry ông bạn, tôi bay trước đây. Photo by Jakob Owens

"Kick (someone or something) down the ladder" = Đá ai/cái gì rớt xuống bậc thang, qua cầu rút ván -> Chối bỏ, loại trừ ai/cái gì đã giúp mình lên được một vị trí/thành công nào đó với mục đích ngăn họ có thành công như mình.

Ví dụ
Another moral risk for investors is the so-called kick-down-the-ladder issue. Entrepreneurs (người khởi nghiệp) forget others when they achieve wealth and fame.

Violet will build a psionic handhold that Mr. Incredible can throw characters up to! Toss someone, and watch out for the Omnidroid blades as you cross the narrow bridge. Kick down the ladder on the other side, and Mr. Incredible can knock down the wall. We’re almost to the goal now!

Other elites (đội quân tinh nhuệ, tầng lớp ưu tú) actively kick down the ladder on which they ascended. All trust Griffith to stem the rising tide. But inequality (bất bình đẳng) sets in motion forces—often of a destructive nature—that ultimately destroys much: lives and huge amounts of wealth as happened in the 1990 aftermath.

“If it wasn’t free I couldn’t have gone to the University of the West Indies. It is painful to see those government ministers who have benefitted from that to now not kick down the ladder but haul up the ladder,” Holder said. “I have a young lady in my constituency (khu vực bầu cử) who had to drop out after doing two years of an accounting programme. This is why the first thing on our agenda is for the state to reinstitute the state paying for university education. It is a priority and it will be done by the BLP under Mia Mottley.”

"Kick (one) in the teeth" = Cắn ai -> Một sự thất vọng hoặc thất bại đầy nhục nhã và đáng chỉ trích đối với ai; chỉ trích, lăng mạ và sỉ nhục ai.

Ví dụ
An asshole than DJT this country has presented you with a huge opportunity and you turn around and kick her in the teeth You disgust (ghê tởm) me.

I also have had several moments when I felt like I made myself vulnerable (tổn thương) to her only to have her metaphorically (ẩn dụ) kick me in the teeth for it.

“They stab me in the back (đâm sau lưng), kick me in the teeth multiple times, and now it’s ‘pay me,’” she said. “Talk about bullies (sự bắt nạt). There’s something in the paint of the walls on Greenwood Avenue.”

"Kick over the traces" nghĩa là gì?

Hãy cho tôi tự do. Photo by  Helena Lopes

"Kick over the traces" = Đá/phi đứt cương ngựa -> Kháng cự lại, không chịu sự kiềm thúc gò ép; chống lại mọi lề thói truyền thống hoặc quy định và thích làm theo ý mình.

Ví dụ
Josh's growing up years were on the family stud farm (trại ngựa giống), he was 11 when cancer claimed his mother's life. As a teenager he tended to kick over the traces.

"He didn't want to kick over the traces. He wasn't a man for tearing down the walls. He wanted to change things in a moderate (ôn hòa) and gradual way as opposed to going all out for particular demands."

Unfortunately we live in a time when decisive action is required of our leaders and in a moral sphere (chỗ đứng, vị trí trong xã hội) where moral dramas have to be played out even though the players are always flawed (mắc sai lầm). The resolution of this conundrum (câu hỏi hóc búa) has resulted in the drawing up of battle lines between those disposed to two very different responses to it. There are those such as Donald Trump and Boris Johnson who kick over the traces and thumb their noses at the ensuing moral condemnation (sự lên án, chỉ trích) (for example by creating an alternative narrative on Twitter) and those who try to double down on control of the ‘optics’ by which they are so hag-ridden.
