"Break my arm patting myself on the back" nghĩa là gì?

Uả tôi thích khoe đấy, thì sao nào? Photo by freestocks.org on Unsplash

"Break (someone's) arm patting (oneself) on the back" = (tự) vỗ lưng đến mức gãy tay or "have calluses from patting (someone's) own back" = (tự) vỗ lưng tới mức chai cả tay -> cụm từ này có nghĩa là ca ngợi bản thân quá mức cho một thành tích hoặc một công việc được thực hiện tốt; là một người khoe khoang khoác lác.

Ví dụ
"Sometimes I'll say something or have a response and I'll break my arm patting myself on the back and say to my husband, 'Oh, that was kind of quick-witted (nhanh trí, thông minh), like Donna.' I'll be so proud of myself."

In my real life when I somehow come up with a saucy one-line zinger (lời nhận xét vui) that makes my husband crack up (cười phá lên), I momentarily feel like I've channeled a piece of Donna Paulsen, and I break my arm patting myself on the back.

Montague won this one, 20-13 – yes, in overtime. Trying not to break my arm patting myself on the back, but in reality, it was one of those games where you hate to see either team lose. Either Montague or Ravenna would have represented the Muskegon area well the rest of the way.

Photo by Robert Andall on Unsplash

"Make (someone's)/the hair stand up on the back of (someone's) neck" = làm tóc gáy của ai dựng đứng lên -> cụm từ này nghĩa là làm ai hoảng sợ.

Ví dụ
If there’s an author who will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck, it’s Catherine Coulter. Read on for the sneak peek of her new thriller, Paradox, where a frightening confrontation (cuộc đối đầu, chạm trán) with an intruder (kẻ đột nhập) sets everyone on edge.

“Rodeo is what rodeo is. Rodeo no matter what, the only time we’re gonna shut it down is if there’s lightning that’s close enough to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck or a tornado, and I’ve seen ‘em ride bulls through a tornado before in South Dakota.” -- Leon Kristianson, Roughrider Commission

So begins a story that will bring her together with Harvey, owner of the house she’s renting for the weekend. Director and writer Richard Bates, Jr. who is no stranger to horror flicks with the likes of Excision, Trash Fire and Suburban Gothic, moves his film along at a nice clip introducing the main characters and showing their personal peculiarities (nét riêng). He then puts everything in place before diving into a devilishly (vô cùng) gory flick that should make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. It’s a “killer” of a film.

"Make a rod for (someone's) own back" có từ rod là gậy, roi -> cụm từ này  chính là 'gậy ông đập lưng ông' đó các bạn.

Ví dụ
You can make a rod for your own back with pricy (đắt tiền) presents – if you’re going to spunk 100 sheets on Valentine’s then the expectations for birthday and Christmas will be through the roof.

If you make your overheads (chi phí hoạt động) too high, you will make a rod for your own back and you won’t last out there. Technology these days allows you to work in a much more cost effective way, even from home.

It is very useful to make a rod for your own back by creating a sleep crutch for your child. If your baby will only sleep in bed with you; let her (although, this is not advisable if you smoke, drink alcohol or sleep on a bed of nails etc.).

"Lose face" = Mất mặt -> Mất uy tín, danh dự và thiếu sự tôn trọng.

Ví dụ
Last Friday, the woman, who cannot be named, testified that she had not rejected Wang's advances because she did not want him to lose face.

If I'm having a meeting with two people, and I correct one of them, he will lose face because the other guy is there to see him get corrected.

This rejection brought shame on Narong, causing him to lose face (in Thai culture) and hold a long-standing grudge (mối ác cảm, hận thù dài lâu) against his son-in-law.

"Lose count" nghĩa là gì?

Nhiều tiền quá, đếm không xuể. Photo by  Jeremy Paige

"Lose count (of something)" = Không nhớ đã đếm được bao nhiêu, thường là cái gì có số lượng lớn.

Ví dụ
As he spoke ahead of tomorrow's game with Watford, it was easy to lose count of how many times Rodgers said he was happy at Leicester.

“One could almost lose count of his tennis records –he spent 237 consecutive (liên tục) weeks as world No. 1, holds the most grand slam men's singles titles (20), and has won 103 singles titles in total so far,” said Swissmint. “These records and his versatile (linh hoạt, toàn diện) playing style make him probably the greatest tennis player of all time.”

Of course, it’s there as a signifier (báo hiệu): that’s right, we’re Coldplay – one of the biggest bands in the world – and we’ve thrown caution to the wind. It’s a laudable (đáng ca ngợi, tán dương) intention, but Everyday Life is wildly uneven (thay đổi, gập ghềnh), held together only by its thematic obsession (ám ảnh về chủ đề) with religion: disc one (Sunrise) literally ends with a hymn (thánh ca), disc two (Sunset) with Chris Martin singing “Alleluia, alleluia”. You lose count of the references to God, church and prayer in between.

"Lose (one's) rag" = Điên tiết, nỗi cơn tam bành.

Ví dụ
Walk out the room, count to 10 and just breathe. “Your baby will be fine for those 10 seconds and the last thing you want is to lose your rag.

Scenes that aired in last night’s show (30th November) saw James lose his rag with the other celebrities when they were trying to decide who would face the latest Bushtucker Trial.

It is rare for me to lose my rag with a company, but Tesco has driven me to the brink (bờ vực). I have found its attitude unreasonable, unhelpful and obstructive (làm nghẽn, tắc trỡ).

"Lose (one's) mojo" = Mất hết phép thuật/bùa mê -> Mất hết sự tự tin, năng lượng, nhiệt huyết và dần thất bại.

Ví dụ
Jose also admits he DID lose his mojo before Manchester United axed him last December. He said: “I admit, yes, I lost my passion."

"When I shave it off I lose my mojo. That's what my wife says." More than 50 people attended the event, which raised $1300 for St John.

"I have surrounded myself with great people and when I lose my mojo, they've helped me clear the cobwebs (rắc rối, lưới, bẫy) in order to carry on.”.

"Lose my hold over" nghĩa là gì?

Buông. Photo by  Larm Rmah

"Lose (one's) hold over (someone or something)" = Mất quyền kiểm soát, điều khiển với ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Mocking (chế giễu) social media comments like this one, attacking those of us who reject the modern grace message, are all too common: "We must restore the TRUTH of the trinity (ba ngôi Đức Chúa Trời) to the Church: Money, Bible and Minister. We will lose our hold over people and our private jets if we don't."

However, her hold on the mob (đám đông, dân chúng) is tenuous (mỏng manh), and she has just enough time to tell her daughter that she loves her before the QA team shoots her several times, causing her to lose her hold over the other hosts, and killing her in the process. Everyone is dying in this episode and I am not happy about it.

Pretending that there are ever direct one-to-one correspondences (quan hệ thư từ, thông điệp) between different election cycles is a mug's game. But that doesn't mean that there is nothing to be gleaned from past campaigns. In many ways the election that 2020 resembles most is the contest between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney in 2012, in which an incumbent (người giữ chức vụ) who had begun to lose his hold over independent voters triumphed over what passed for an ideological (thuộc hệ tư tưởng) moderate from the opposition party, who had survived an intemperate (quá độ, không đều) primary.

"Live in hope of" nghĩa là gì?

My dream house Photo by Chris Goodwin

'live in hope of something' = sống với hi vọng về cái gì sẽ xảy ra hay sẽ thành hiện thực.

Ví dụ
“Even if there isn't yet a cure to turn back the tide, we live in hope of flood defences to slow it down,” said Clark.

Thanks to endless (liên tục) rumors and leaks, high-profile transfers are usually common knowledge far in advance of the teams announcing the deal. That being said, we can still live in hope of these five huge names joining the European fold in 2020 and pushing the region towards its first World Championship trophy since Season 1.

I, as modern day American, take for granted the freedoms and the wealth I have. What if I choose to help refugees (người tị nạn) around the world including those at our own border so that they too can live in hope of survival and celebrate their good fortune? Paying it forward would be one way to honor the kindness and compassion that the Native Americans showed our ancestors.

"Build my hopes on" nghĩa là gì?

Nắm tay em đi khắp thế gian Photo by Yuri Catalano from Pexels

'build one's hopes on someone or something' = đặt niềm tin, mong đợi của ai vào ai hay cái gì.

Ví dụ
The Kurds’ dream of a democratic (dân chủ), federal Iraq, where they could build their hopes on the Iraqi constitution, is far from being fulfilled in this chaotic situation

If you’re asking me for my positive input on youth, I would happily include Lo Celso and Lautaro in my team any day. J. Correa on the left as well. I am not going to build my hopes on Paredes or, G. Pity Martinez because I either consider them one dimensional or, less talented than others.

Empson’s “Can we build a Sustainable Society?” exposes the limits of some climate activists, like Naomi Klein, who build their hopes on a rational form of capitalism (chủ nghĩa tư bản). Empson shares Marx’s perspective that class struggle is needed not only to replace capitalism, but to ensure workers “put themselves back in their rightful place, as a part of nature, labouring and changing the world around them in the collective interest of people and planet…”

'a forlorn hope' có từ 'forlorn' là tuyệt vọng, nguy hiểm, chắc chắn thất bại -> hi vọng hão huyền; đội quân xung kích, đội quân cảm tử.

Ví dụ
Increasingly, for Palacios, his team-mates and a fervent (nồng nhiệt) fanbase, this looks like a forlorn hope.

Today is St Martin’s Day, when folklore (văn hóa dân gian) says we can expect one last gasp of summer with mild, calm and sunny weather. Today’s prospects of much fine weather from St Martin look like a forlorn hope but it could be worse — 920 years ago, St Martin’s Day in 1099 turned into a catastrophe (thảm họa).

Sinn Fein’s decision to do its first-ever party election broadcast entirely in Irish was a message to both the NIO and the two governments, as well as to the DUP: and that message was that any hope others might have that the party was prepared to row back on a stand-alone Irish language act (ILA) was a forlorn hope.

"Lose my edge" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng ngủ quên trên hào quang của quá khứ. Photo by  Caleb Frith

"Lose (one's) edge" = Mất đi sự sắc bén -> Không còn kỹ năng đặc biệt, mất đi ưu thế hoặc giá trị của mình như lúc trước.

Ví dụ
Charity, in particular, is a character who could never lose her edge and so is destined to make mistake after mistake. And our ‘Nessa is no doormat and shouldn’t have to put up with it by default (ngầm định, mặc định). In order for them both to learn lessons about one another – including what life is like without each other, faults and all – a split was inevitable (không tránh được) at some point.

Zoe will be ecstatic (trạng thái mê ly, ngất) over Theo’s decision to include her, but Kyle will insist Theo’s using her to mess with him. Even so, Zoe will just be glad Theo’s jumpstarting (mồi khởi động) her career. Afterward, Summer will express concern to Theo about his continued feud (mối hận thù) with Kyle. Theo will contend that he just doesn’t want Kyle to lose his edge, but Summer won’t buy that. She’ll think it seems more like Theo wants to destroy Kyle and Lola’s marriage.

I take .5–5g Schisandra every now and then if I am stressed. I experience significantly lower levels of stress and higher levels of relaxation. Schisandra amps up my creativity, probably thanks to its relaxing effects. It potently improves my attention span and patience (sự kiên nhẫn). Schisandra works very well for me; it slightly enhances my mood and is great for mitigating (làm dịu bớt) anxiousness and stress induced by Caffeine or other stimulating (kích thích) nootropics (thuốc hưng trí). If I take too much (6+ grams) I can become drowsy (uể oải, thẫn thờ) and lose my edge/motivation.

"Lend your money and lose your friend" nghĩa là gì?

Tiền bạc và tình bạn nên sòng phẳng với nhau cho dễ sống. Photo by Alexey Sukhariev

"Lend your money and lose your friend" = Cho bạn mượn tiền thì chẳng khác gì mất luôn người bạn đó -> Câu thành ngữ khuyên chúng ta rằng nên hạn chế cho bạn mình mượn tiền vì mình sẽ rất ngại hoặc sợ làm phiền người bạn đó khi chúng ta đòi lại số tiền cho mượn, mà không đòi cũng không được và nói chung rất khó xử và đe dọa đến tình bạn.

Ví dụ
"Lend your money and lose your friend" is a common idiom to keep in our mind so that we can keep our friendships for good.

Coming out, I felt victorious (chiến thắng, khải hoàn) and was filled with joy despite losing his friendship forever. Neither was I interested in befriending him again. Later, I learned he had borrowed from many and never repaid, which is why when I saw him recently after decades at an airport, I preferred to change my path. “Lend your money and lose your friend.” Of course, there are reasons for it!

When it comes to borrowing or lending money to friends, a common and loudly resounding advice is this: “Don’t do it!” The fastest way to lose a friend is to lend him money. Asking your friend to pay you back too soon makes you a cheapskate (kẻ bần tiện) (and loanshark) and asking too late risks your friend forgetting about the loan (khoản nợ) entirely. There is also the possibility that your so-called-friend never intended to pay you back. Either way, it won’t end well. There is even an idiom to summarize this occurrence, “Lend your money and lose your friend”.

"Lose your cool" nghĩa là gì?

"Lose (one's) cool" = Mất sự điềm tĩnh -> Không kiểm soát được cơn giận, có hành vi và thái độ quá đà.

Ví dụ
But playing a woman in a position of power, who'll never lose her cool — was like, crazy. It's wild to play that kind of agenda without insecurity.

The move has the desired effect Liam was looking for because Mavar gets aggressive (gây hấn, hung hãn) and blames the Gallaghers for making him lose his cool.

The only moment in the special’s 43 minutes that could threaten to polarize (hoàn toàn đối lập với nhau) an otherwise peaceful living room is a cheeky remark courtesy of the always-sassy Daniel Levy (of Schitt’s Creek fame) about Musgraves’ favorite holiday being Christmas, not President’s Day. But even if you, unlike Musgraves (who has always been very politically forthright (thẳng tính, quả quyết), especially in support of the LGBTQ+ community), are a fan of the orange man in the White House, you’d still be more likely to chuckle (khoái trá) than lose your cool. That’s just the power of Kacey Musgraves, the reigning queen of country, camp and Christmas cheer. The only thing left to say is “Yeehaw.”

Ví dụ
I am a woman with my own story. Please stop trying to tell "a tale never loses in the telling". I promise... you don't know me.

This is likely a tale never loses in the telling, but it is true that Norton was a successful businessman. Until, that is, he made a disastrous (thảm khốc) gamble on rice.

“Long story, short, we had a great conversation. We’re getting back in a good place. We hung out a couple of times, and then he heard a rumor (tin đồn) about me and instead of asking me if it was true, believed the person who told him. It was a completely convoluted (bị quấn, xoắn), "a tale never loses in the telling". And the fact that he just believed this person and cut me off so quickly after wanting to be back in my life, that’s just not someone I need around me.”

"Run out of time" = Hết thời gian, không còn thời gian để hoàn thành việc gì.

Think you've run out of time to get a Cyber Monday Fitbit deal? While Black Friday might almost be behind us, Cyber Monday is still here and that means there is still time to get your hands on Christmas gadgets (đồ dùng, đồ vật) for less.

Bangladesh's left-arm pace bowler (người chơi bóng gỗ) Mustafizur Rahman is starting to run out of time. In the past, players were able to catch Pokémon in the wild, no matter the level. With Sword and Shield, players can only catch Pokémon equivalent (tương đương, ngang bằng) to or lower than their current level. This restriction (sự cấm) was put in place to create more overall balance within the game. Essentially, if you have a gym badge that lets you catch up to level 25, you can't catch a level 28 Pokémon. With this added restriction, if you encounter (chạm trán) any higher-level Pokémon, you have to let it go or turn tail and run.

At this point you will find yourself shouting at Rowan to turn tail and run for her life… She doesn’t. "Run for (one's) life" = Chạy vì sự sống còn của mình -> Cố gắng chạy nhanh nhất có thể để thoát được sự nguy hiểm, cứu lấy mạng sống mình.

Ví dụ
A man who took pictures of knife-point car jackers in Norwich had to run for his life after being chased by two men with a shotgun, a court has heard.

“All these kids warned me against it (due to a big dog in the yard), but they boosted me up over the wall,” he said. “When I went over the fence, I didn’t have anybody to help me get back over the fence. I had to run for my life and find a way out. People seem to be excited about a decision I made 46 years ago, and then 26 years ago he made a decision to write this movie.”

"You can run, but you can't hide" = Bạn có thể chạy nhưng cũng không thể trốn thoát được -> Dù làm gì đi nữa thì cũng không thoát được hậu quả của nó.

Ví dụ
In the video, Voss tells Graham she was threatened by the alleged victim, who told her "you can run but you can't hide because Craig Loverin will get [you]."

“I love you, you are the best commodity (tiện nghi) desk I have ever seen in my life,” he said at a conference organized by Goldman on Wednesday. That’s a far cry from last October, when Goncalves told metals and mining equity (tính công bằng, hợp lý) analyst Matthew Korn “you can run but you can’t hide” and criticized the bank for being “wrong about iron ore prices, years in a row.”

The veracity (sự thật) and practicability of the popular saying, “You can run but you can’t hide”, has manifested (đã khai) in the life of the supposedly Ghanaian ace criminal investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas. Being avaricious (hám lợi) for riches and fame hence resulting to whatever evil (cái ác) means available to him as he deems (cho rằng) fit in his warped mind to attaining his objective, the truth has come to slap him in the face to his least expectation.

Manager Simon Duffy said the newsletter, which went out to 700 businesses and 11,000 readers, was very successful, but they needed more funding to grow it as it was "run on the smell of an oily rag".

For all the wealth and stature of Portuguese football, the country's smaller clubs run off the smell of an oily rag. That was the case for Sullivan's small suburban Lisbon club, which exists beneath the the long shadows cast by local giants Benfica and Sporting. They paid him just $160 per week - not even enough to cover his rent - and it forced him into finding full-time work just to keep his dream alive.

I was most intrigued (ngạc nhiên) to hear more about the relationship between petrol and electricity from the perspective (góc nhìn, quan điểm) of economy. As mentioned, the petrol engine on its own runs at about 9L to 10L per 100km (if you drive like you mean it). But in Hybrid Mode, you can get through the first 40 to 45K on the smell of an oily rag. If you're pottering around in traffic, you may not touch your petrol at all. That alone will drive us to work harder for our salvation (sự cứu rỗi linh hồn) and, please God, allow us both to stand before Him in the end where He alone will say to us both, “Welcome home, good and faithful servants. You have run the good race. You have fought the good fight. Come and rest in Me. ”
