"Rape culture" nghĩa là gì?

Liệu chúng ta có đang sống trong một xã hội văn minh? Photo by Joanne Adela Low from Pexels

"Rape culture" = văn hóa hiếp dâm/cưỡng hiếp -> là một thuật ngữ được tạo ra bởi các nhà nữ quyền ở Mỹ vào những năm 1970. Nó định nghĩa cách mà xã hội đang đổ lỗi cho nạn nhân bị tấn công tình dục và bình thường hóa hành vi tấn công tình dục của nam giới. Ở đó, người ta coi việc hiếp dâm là cách "chữa bệnh" đồng tính.

Ví dụ
"The play (vở kịch), while basically about a young girl into selfhood (ích kỷ), is about being black in America, things that we have to go through like the rape culture in the African-American community and so many different trials and tribulations (nỗi khổ đau),” says director (đạo diễn) Khadijah Rolle.

The student, who is 17 and a college freshman (năm nhất đại học), calls out in her video the university’s Greek community (cộng đồng) for rape culture and silencing victims (bịt miệng nạn nhân). She says she hopes sharing her story will encourage (khuyến khích) other survivors (sống sót) to come forward.

Mukanire told CNS that Congo's rape culture is fueled by foreign investors' (nhà đầu tư nước ngoài) money -- and, at 20 years and counting, may threaten an entire generation (toàn thế hệ). "If police and military can act with impunity (không bị trừng phạt), civilians (dân thường) think they can get away with it," she said.

"Get her where she lives" nghĩa là gì?

Bình yên là nơi đây. Photo by  Joyce Romero

"Get (one) where (one) live(s)" = Đưa ai tới nơi thích hợp để sống/nơi phù hợp để họ sống -> Tác động/ảnh hưởng sâu sắc với cá nhân ai.

Ví dụ
I'm sure the ageism (sự đối xử với người nào không công bằng do tuổi tác của họ) she experiences bothers her on some level but doesn't get her where she lives.

And, if you’ve really checked out that list above, you’ll see some cancers on there really get you where you live. Anal cancer, for instance, is what actress and cultural icon Farrah Fawcett died from, and what the actress Marcia Cross (Melrose Place; Desperate Housewives) is battling now. And while many of them seem gender specific, like cervical (thuộc về cổ tử cung), vulvar (âm đạo), and penile (dương vật), some are not. Everyone has an anus (hậu môn) and a mouth (oropharyngeal); this can hit everyone.

Walter is sitting on a bench. Jesse gets out of the van and starts walking towards Walter. Jesse sees some guy standing across the street that looks sketch and won’t go over to Walter. Jesse walks away. Hank gets pissed. Jesse goes to a pay phone and calls Walter. Jesse tells him nice try, then tells Walter he will get him where he lives. Jesse hangs up and walks away. Walter gets up and starts walking that direction. The sketch guy Jesse saw was just there to get his daughter. Walter calls up Todd and tells him that he just may have another job for his uncle.

"Get by the short and curlies" nghĩa là gì?

"Get/have by (one) the short and curlies" = Kiểm soát ai hoàn toàn/chế ngự được ai.

Ví dụ
RM know they have you by the short and curlies. Spicerhaart won't leave any sooner than any other regional or corporate.

Trouble is, once you sign up, they have you by the short and curlies. It's nothing to do with convenience and everything to do with finance.

I don’t know why Gus was suddenly so generous with the comp time (and why he allowed himself to be seen in such a public place with a known low-life), but Jesse really does get him by the short and curlies. If the cook won’t go to the kitchen, and there’s no other cook available, what choice does Gus have?

"Culture shock" nghĩa là gì?

Sốc nhất chắc là phải sang đường ở Việt Nam. Photo by Dương Nhân from Pexels

"Culture shock" = sốc văn hóa -> cảm thấy lo lắng, ngạc nhiên, mất phương hướng hoặc bối rối khi phải hoạt động trong một nền văn hóa hay môi trường xã hội hoàn toàn khác như khi ở nước ngoài.

Ví dụ
From driving to ordering a coffee, Americans often experience (trải qua) culture shock when they visit Australia for the first time.

“I went through a really hard culture shock, and I’ve traveled a lot. But the culture shock in South Korea was very strong for me, especially the food” Clouse said.

Culture shock and the language barrier (rào cản ngôn ngữ) are by far the most common issues expats (người nước ngoài) working in Vietnam have to grapple (vật lộn) with.

I wouldn’t say there were any major culture shocks, however, it did take some time to adjust (điều chỉnh) to a different pace. I have lived in a very fast-moving environment (môi trường) in Dubai before and having moved to Bali, the pace has significantly slowed down.

"Get all het up" nghĩa là gì?

"Get (all) het up" = được đốt nóng, được nung nóng -> Nổi nóng, tức giận và buồn bực.

Ví dụ
That’s what I was supposed to write about. But I just… can’t. I just cannot do it. I’m so tired. I’m not doing it. It’s a waste of my time and effort, and it’s a waste of yours to read it and get all het up about it. It’s Friday. It’s the good day. There’s no bad vibes here. It’s a posi vibes day only.

When Nicola tells Adam she is unhappy, he misses the point entirely and reminds her she’s “got a good life – our own space, two cars”. She later apologises, telling him she’s “really sorry for just… for being me”. In response, Adam gaslights Nicola, telling her she’s “very sensitive” and “silly” and tends to “get all het up” about things.

Sure, you can attach to your shoes those metal grippy-things — I hope I’m not getting too technical for you — and walk along with confidence. But sometimes you forget you have them on. You’re listening to the news as you walk the dog, you get all het up about something and leave them on when you get home, only to discover deep bright gouges in the floor all over the house an hour later.

"Culture hero" nghĩa là gì?

Con cũng ước muốn được làm anh hùng. Photo by Porapak Apichodilok from Pexels

"Culture hero" = anh hùng văn hóa -> người có công trong việc tìm ra/ tạo ra nền tảng các giá trị văn hóa, làm rạng danh đất nước với các thành tựu văn hóa - xã hội (người thật hoặc tưởng tượng).

Ví dụ
The second half tells the story of the ancestral (tổ tiên) culture hero Lata. He opened the doors to outsiders in order to start a new voyage (du hành).

A Profiles in History spokesperson (phát ngôn viên) said: 'The historical impact Flash Gordon had on science fiction (khoa học viễn tưởng) and pop culture heroes of the 20th century cannot be overstated (nói quá).

Culture heroes can be creator deities (vị thần) or other gods, semidivine (thần linh) beings, animals, or heroic people; in many cultural traditions (truyền thống văn hóa) the wily trickster (kẻ lừa đảo gian xảo) is also represented as a culture hero.

The 35-year-old actor said as an artiste (diễn viên chuyên nghiệp) his aim is to serve "unique" content to the audiences (khán giả). "I'm not your popular culture hero to have releases in quick succession (kế vị, nối tiếp). I’m someone who likes to take up new subjects and it takes a lot of my time,” Rana told PTI.

"Tastes differ" nghĩa là gì?

Mỗi người có một vẻ đẹp riêng Photo by Leonidas Takao Ishikawa from Pexels

'Tastes differ' = mỗi người có những sở thích, quan điểm, mong muốn khác nhau.

Ví dụ
Ford has advice about how you should approach home design especially with the registry. After all, tastes differ—even when you’re married.

Tastes differ, but the shiny silver door handles and gloss black finish on air vents and steering wheel controls may be too blingy (lấp lánh) for anyone used to Scandinavian minimalism (phong cách tối giản).

In this postmodern era (kỉ nguyên chống lại chủ nghĩa hiện đại) of gadgets, it’s a Herculean task to refrain from video games. While the tastes differ from person to person, we all love swiping and tapping on our smartphones to score that goal, bust that bubble, or splash that head.

some of the users did not believe in the honesty of the competition. Some joked about the “father-General”. But the others heartily congratulated the winner. The men were reminded that the beauty contest in the police involves testing for physical training and shooting. Most agreed that tastes differ.

"Cancel culture" nghĩa là gì?

Lên mạng gõ ba dòng chữ tẩy chay, chửi bới chẳng có tác dụng gì cả. Photo by Rosemary Ketchum from Pexels

"Cancel culture" = văn hóa xóa sổ, hoặc "call-out culture" (văn hóa phơi bày), hay văn hóa tẩy chay.

“We’re living in an intense (dữ dội) era of cancel culture right now,” she says. “I think it’s really nice to see a story where someone does something wrong and then is redeemed (chuộc lỗi). I think that’s a nice message to put out there.”

Cancel culture doesn’t actually achieve (đạt được) its central aim, which is to cancel. Outside of Twitter rants (nguyền rủa) and furious (giận dữ) op-eds (bình luận), careers still thrive (phát triển) and abusers still evade accountability (trốn tránh trách nhiệm). We have to confront (đối mặt) these failures when we discuss cancel culture.

The “cancel culture” that some say doesn’t exist has struck again: Woody Allen’s autobiography (tự truyện), “Apropos of Nothing,” scheduled for publication (xuất bản) by Hachette Book Group next month, has been canceled due to objections (phản đối) from Allen’s estranged (xa lạ) son, Ronan Farrow, famous journalist. The protests (biểu tình) were driven by the belief that the 84-year-old filmmaker sexually abused (lạm dụng tình dục) his adopted daughter (con gái nuôi), Dylan Farrow, in 1992.

"Get a lot of stick" nghĩa là gì?

"Get (a lot of) stick (from someone)" = Nhận rất nhiều gậy/sự châm chọc từ ai -> Nhận quá nhiều sự phê bình, đánh giá/nhận xét hoặc sự khước từ từ ai về điều gì.

Ví dụ
I use my Garmin 1030, I get a lot of stick from fellow riders because it’s a huge screen but I love it. I use Strava (everyone loves a KOM) and then Trainingpeaks is reserved for my day to day training and data analysis.

Two under-rated vets on the Oilers this year are James Neal and Kris Russell. Both get a lot of stick from some local fans because of their large cap hits, but both have been solid two-way players at even strength this year. Neal has been defensively responsible and added a bit of skill and edge to the attack. He’s a slow skater but he’s held his own. Of course, on the power play he’s still got his soft hands in front of the net. In total, he’s been a much better even strength player than Milan Lucic was last year.

Asked about the quality of refereeing which has been a topic of debate, the forward said: "It is not easy being a referee. But, I have seen some improvement from last season. They are under a lot of pressure, they have to give their decisions spot on. When they get it wrong, it hurts me and it is not fair for them. I also think we have a part to play with that. We have to help them because they get a lot of stick when decisions go wrong. There has been progress in terms of last season but there is a lot to be done."

"Flattery will get you nowhere" nghĩa là gì?

"Flattery will get you nowhere" = Nịnh hót sẽ không đưa bạn tới được đến đâu cả. -> Để khích lệ ai tự nỗ lực/cố gắng làm điều gì và đừng cố gắng bợ đỡ hoặc xin ân huệ từ ai.

Ví dụ
Aquarius (Jan21/Feb19) Flattery will get you nowhere. When someone asks for your opinion, be honest. It isn't necessary to be unduly harsh (tàn nhẫn, thô bạo).

Russell said: "Flattery will get you nowhere as March gets off the starting blocks. "When talking with an employer or other professionals, it's best to be honest, even if it means challenging their ideas.

Interestingly, while our ministers bob and weave over the issue, Naik himself is irritatingly consistent, insisting that he has nothing to apologise for and does not regret anything he has said – presumably that includes urging Muslims to vote for the corrupt Barisan Nasional government in the last elections because it was Muslim-led instead of PH which he deemed insufficiently Muslim. Of course, when BN lost, he quickly rushed over to greet Mahathir and proclaim him a great Muslim statesman. Who says flattery will get you nowhere?

"Get your bearings" nghĩa là gì?

"Get/find your bearings" = Thấy được/có được góc phương vị của bạn -> Ý là bạn biết rõ mình đang ở đâu, nắm rõ hoàn cảnh bạn đang như thế nào đặc biệt là tình cảnh mới và lạ với bạn; hiểu rõ mọi thứ diễn ra xung quanh bạn.

Ví dụ
There are opportunities to hop on and off as you please and it is a relaxed way to get your bearings – the full loop takes about 40 minutes.

You'd be hard pressed to stumble into that kind of scenario in the map's first iteration, where one area can be swept clean by a single squad before you can even get your bearings – or a damn Mozambique.

Even if you have a little snatched knowledge gleaned from your green-fingered parents or Monty Don on Gardener's World, it can take a frustratingly long time to get your bearings, let alone become a master at evading slugs, or making the black gold that is compost.

Going through adolescence in a strange land, Kissinger remained almost as withdrawn as he had been in Furth. He was respected by his crowd of fellow young immigrants for his mind and maturity, but he remained detached and socially insecure. "It was difficult for Henry to find his bearings, to feel in place when we first came, especially when our father had no career," said his brother, Walter.

"Don't get your panties in a bunch" = Đừng mặc nhiều quần lót con gái quá/đừng làm như con gái -> Đừng quá kích động, đau buồn hoặc nhạy cảm về chuyện gì, nhất là những chuyện vặt, không quan trọng và dễ dàng giải quyết được.

Ví dụ
He's just getting camera time, don't get your panties in a bunch.

Don't get your panties in a bunch and don't change your fantasy football draft plans (kế hoạch mẫu, nháp) just yet.

“Don't get your panties in a bunch,” he'd say, shutting down anyone in the band who dared question his latest diktat (điều bắt buột phải thi hành, cách giải quyết ngặt nghèo nước chiến thắng bắt nước bại trận phải chấp hành).

Khi người đẹp báo thù. Photo by  Steffen Trommer

"Don't get mad, get even" = Đừng nổi nóng, hãy trả thù -> Nếu ai hại bạn thì đừng tốn công sức vào việc chỉ biết hận họ nhưng hãy quay lại trả thù lại họ.

Ví dụ
Distracting, irrelevant, and offensive comments can quickly derail important discussions. But don’t get mad, get even—by burying unwanted remarks using Twitter’s option to hide replies.

Scott Brown was being run against by — opposed by Elizabeth Warren. There's an old saying in Massachusetts, don't get mad, get even. She got both. She got mad and she got even. She kneecapped (đập vỡ xương bánh chè đến nỗi bị què) him. He never recovered.

Friend says that Ames’ pragmatic (giáo điều, võ đoán, thực dụng) New England approach to getting things done has stuck with him. “What I learned through Blanche is don’t get emotional about it, just find a way to win,” or in other words, “Don’t get mad. Get even.’”

"Can't get there from here" nghĩa là gì?

"Can't get there from here" = Từ đây tới đó không được đâu -> Cách nói đùa giỡn với người hỏi đường rằng từ đây không đến được chỗ họ muốn tới đâu (thường chỉ đường tới nơi xa xôi và hiểm trở).

Ví dụ
There are few places in the Bay Area where the expression “you can't get there from here” more aptly applies.

If you were ever in a place where you could almost say you can't get there from here, well, that would be the Shores and Cape Coral, Fla.”.

No, you don’t: Mr. Driver’s Seat resides in the hinterlands of Chester County. Plowing used to be a thing, but then it mostly seems to have stopped, or else it doesn’t happen when I need it to (late, late at night). And I teach in Delaware, and you really can’t get there from here, so plows are also Not a Thing on some of the little roads that travel through ChesLen Preserve and Unionville.

"Sex goddess" nghĩa là gì?

"Sex goddess" = nữ thần tình dục -> nghĩa là người phụ nữ, thường là người nổi tiếng, người của công chúng, rất đẹp và hấp dẫn gợi tình; biểu tượng tình dục.

Ví dụ
One day, she concludes (kết luận), she’ll be a surgeon (bác sĩ phẫu thuật)/genius poet/king of the world/running her own company who is also great in bed. Even at 13 she understands what is expected of women. She must be all things at once — sex goddess and surgeon — to really succeed.

“After seeing [West] on the screen, a shimmering (lung linh) blonde sex goddess, I felt an immediate connection to her,” Jayne said. “That started a lifelong love of Mae West and I started reading and watching anything about her I could get my hands on.”

The truth, hidden in plain (chống trải) sight in so many of her movies and musical performances, is that Doris Day was a sex goddess. That’s not a term we use much anymore (for good reason), and in its heyday it was generally applied to actresses who wielded their erotic energies more nakedly, so to speak.

"My cup runneth over" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Matheus Viana from Pexels

"(One's) cup runneth over" có từ "runneth" là tiếng Anh cổ của "run". Cụm này nghĩa đen là cái cốc bị đầy tràn -> có quá nhiều điều tốt đẹp cũng như lợi ích đến với ai khiến người đó choáng ngợp.

Ví dụ
As his proverbial (tục ngữ) cup runneth over with cash, Honey’s newly-minted tech tycoon (ông trùm công nghệ mới) has sought investment shelter (nơi đầu tư) in L.A.’s trusty luxury real estate market (thị trường bất động sản).

The Rev. David Martin couldn’t catch a break. Even when he made a perfect shot, his opponent (đối thủ) caught a lucky bounce and beat him. Things went so bad, his teammates (đồng đội) started quoting the Psalms. "You can't say our cup runneth over," one of them said.

Our Sondheim cup runneth over. If the spring theater season does indeed move forward as planned (như kế hoạch) — an urgent (cấp thiết) question at this point as the world confronts (đương đầu) an incipient pandemic (chớm đại dịch) — these productions (sản phẩm) will be a fitting tribute to an artist who transformed the American musical from a vehicle of sentimentality (tình cảm) to an instrument of truth (công cụ của sự thật).

"Culturally advantaged" = lợi thế văn hóa -> giàu có, tầng lớp thượng lưu, ưu tú. Ngược lại là "culturally disadvantaged/deprived" (nghèo, văn hóa thấp).

Ví dụ
Shupe’s second estimation (ước tính) is that, because research has shown that masculine (nam tính) men are socially, politically, economically, and culturally advantaged in North America, they receive greater social benefits (lợi ích xã hội) compared to men who display traits (đặc điểm) associated with femininity (nữ tính).

The guys grew up together in Imperial, Nebraska, and have been friends for 20 years. Together, they now lead Rabble Mill (, focused on providing (cung cấp) economically and culturally disadvantaged youth in Nebraska with skills, relationships and opportunities to grow and reinvest (tái đầu tư) in their communities (cộng đồng).

The interest of diversity (đa dạng) is compelling (hấp dẫn) in the context of a university’s admissions (tuyển sinh) program because an otherwise qualified medical (y khoa) student with a particular background—whether it be ethnic (dân tộc), geographic, culturally advantaged or disadvantaged—may bring to a professional (chuyên nghiệp) school of medicine experiences, outlooks (tầm nhìn), and ideas that enrich (phong phú) the training of its student body.

"Burner phone" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Achraf Alan from Pexels

"Burner phone" = đốt điện thoại -> điện dùng số giả, dùng sim rác để gọi nhằm tránh bị truy lùng.

Ví dụ
Burner phones have a bad rep as the drug dealer's (buôn ma túy) telecommunication device (thiết bị liên lạc) of choice, but that hasn't stopped people from binning (chế tạo) their fancy iPhones or Google Pixels for much more basic gadgets (thiết bị cơ bản).

In a written ruling, Judge Zouhary said his decision not to revoke (thu hồi) Dr. Bauer’s bond (hợp đồng) was based on the lack of detail about the content of hundreds of phone calls the doctor made, many of them using a “burner” phone provided by his former business manager, to patients following two arraignments (buộc tội) last year.

After Schildhorn figured out the scheme (âm mưu), he played along with “Barry Goldstein” to try to get Lower Merion police involved (tham gia). But police said there was little they could do because the calls were likely made on burner phones and he didn’t lose any money. But he’s far from alone in being fooled by a scammer (kẻ lừa đảo) impersonating (mạo danh) a loved one.

"Phone (something) in" nghĩa đen là chuyển điện thoại hoặc chuyển lại lời nhắn cho ai. Nghĩa bóng là làm việc chiếu lệ, hời hợt.

Ví dụ
Many people choose to phone it in during their last day at a job.

While Tepper already disclosed becoming a perennial contender (địch thủ lâu năm) may require “a little tearing down before moving forward”, believing the Panthers would purposefully (cố tình) phone it in is less than ideal.

Like anything built to spread like wildfire (cháy rừng) across the internet, the rankings (bảng xếp hạng) have issues. And so, of course, does Plano. But WalletHub doesn’t phone it in like some. The study uses 30 metrics across the three dimensions (ba chiều).

Naturally, it would be easy after all these years to simply phone it in and run through their repertoire (các tiết mục) in an obligatory (bắt buộc) way. However, Bunnell said that he and Beckley still retain the enthusiasm (nhiệt huyết) they’ve shared since early on.

"New phone, who dis?"

In the tweet, the Garden State's account shared the saucy (ngang tàng, xấc xược) video clip with the text, "dear delaware." Delaware's official handle (xử lý) then offered the wholly original reply of "New phone, who dis?"

The billionaire Berkshire Hathaway CEO was chatting with CNBC Monday. During the convo (cuộc đối thoại), he dropped a bombshell (dư luận xôn xao)... new phone, who dis? Yep, ol' Warren says he's caved at last and purchased (mua) himself the latest edition of Apple's iPhone, which has apparently become his go-to mobile device.

I waved to indicate (biểu lộ) that I was harmless (vô hại) (because I basically am) and walked on, meanwhile starting the phone call I knew I had to make. “New phone, who dis ?" Kristy said, when she picked up.

Ví dụ
Don't multitask (làm nhiều việc) when you are on the phone.

The challenges intensified (căng thẳng hơn) when my children were teenagers, here. Then the phone was the most important part of their life; they wanted to be on the phone all the time.

One day while Nicole was on the phone we got a call from what seemed to be a telemarketer (tiếp thị qua điện thoại). “Hi. May I speak to Charlotte Peterson?” a young lady asked. “Can you call her back? I'm on the phone right now”

The phone rings, you answer it, and then you say, “Could you please hold on for a minute.” Put the phone down and talk to your child. Then you say, “Look, sweetie, sometimes it's hard for you when I'm on the phone and you need my attention."
