"Good wine needs no bush" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Matthew Henry from Burst

"Good wine needs no bush" = rượu ngon không cần biển hiệu -> hữu xạ tự nhiên hương, giá trị thực sự không cần phải quảng cáo, khoe khoang mà ai cũng cảm nhận được.

Ví dụ
GLOUCESTER, the United States, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Good wine needs no bush. If you have good lobsters (tôm hùm), buyers -- even from the other side of the planet -- will find ways reaching out to you.

Good wine needs no bush but movers and shakers who need distinctive symbols (biểu tượng đặc biệt) to counter their inferiority complex (mặc cảm) can be provided with a monogrammed jacket (áo khoác chữ lồng).

Good wine needs no bush. When Harry passed his test, a third Skoda Octavia joined the fleet (đoàn tàu). Now I see Skodas everywhere. One day I will get the Superb, which has an umbrella cannily packed (đóng gói cẩn thận) into the driver’s door.

"Fingers were made before forks" = ngón tay có trước, dĩa có sau -> lời biện minh của người thích ăn bằng tay thay vì dĩa.

Ví dụ
Licking her greasy fingers (ngón tay dính đầy dầu mỡ) with much satisfaction, Nellie smirked (cười ngốc) and simply said, “Fingers were made before forks."

Some morsels (miếng nhỏ) of food just look like they should be picked up and eaten. And yet that’s not always appropriate (thích hợp) even if “fingers were made before forks.”

Irene put hers on a warm white plate she'd preheated (đã hâm nóng trước) in the oven. She ate hers with a knife and fork. Mary Ann tore (kéo, xé) at hers with her bare fingers. 'Fingers were made before forks,' she said, in her deadpan (vô tư, vô cảm) teenage voice which hardly ever went up or down.

"Stick a fork in (someone/ something)" nghĩa là đã xong, hoàn thành/ từ bỏ. Nghĩa đen được hiểu là chọc dĩa vào miếng thịt xem nó đã chín chưa.

Ví dụ
Stick a fork in the Boston Red Sox. They won’t be winning the American League East (giải bóng chày) for a fourth year in a row.

Stick a fork in him because he’s done. Once again Mike White logged significant snaps (cú táp đáng kể) in preseason action (trận trước mùa giải) and once again he failed to produce results.

The Cleveland Browns, who have yet to play a down (chơi giảm sút) that mattered or see Baker Mayfield, Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry in a game together, are going nowhere (không đi đến đâu) this season. Stick a fork in them. They’re done. Finished. Finito. Better luck next year!

Alabama passes bill requiring chemical castration for certain child molesters (người quấy rầy, người làm phiền, người gạ gẫm)

The bill, known as HB 379, was introduced by Republican state Rep. Steve Hurst and targets child sex offenders (người phạm tội, người phạm lỗi) whose offenses involve anyone under 13, according to the legislation.

“They have marked this child for life and the punishment should fit the crime,”

The offenders would be required to foot the bill for the procedure. Refusing to undergo the castration would constitute a violation of parole (sự phóng thích tù nhân sau khi người đó cam kết giữ tư cách đạo đức tốt; lời hứa của tù nhân nhận rằng anh ta sẽ không tìm cách chạy trốn (nếu được tha trong một thời gian có giới hạn) hoặc không phạm một tội khác (nếu được thả trước khi mãn hạn); bản cam kết của tù nhân, tù binh... để được tha), the bill (dự luật) reads.

Hurst said his aim is to reduce the number of sex crimes committed  (phạm tội) against children by making potential offenders think twice before they act.

"Put on your dancing shoes" nghĩa là gì?

Let's dance! Photo courtesy Vladimir Pustovit

"Put on (one's) dancing shoes" = đeo giày vào -> sẵn sàng nhảy múa.

Ví dụ
Time to dust off (phủi đi) those sequins and put on your dancing shoes, because after what feels like ages, 'Dancing With The Stars' is all set to grace (tỏa sáng) our screens with season 28.

Delhi’s street children will put on their dancing shoes in a bid to spread awareness (tăng nhận thức) on plastic use and wastage mitigation (sử dụng nhựa và giảm thiểu chất thải) in New Delhi on 27 Aug.

Barath is one of 10 local celebrities who will put on their dancing shoes at BancorpSouth Arena for Dance Like the Stars. The annual event is the main fundraiser (gây quỹ chính) for the Boys & Girls Clubs of North Mississippi.

"You can’t dance at two weddings" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Matthew Henry from Burst

"You can’t dance at two weddings (at the same time)" = bạn không thể nhảy tại 2 đám cưới một lúc -> không thể làm 2 việc cùng một lúc.

Ví dụ
I never quite knew (hoàn toàn biết) what Paul Wkllstonis meant when he said that you can't dance at two weddings at the same time.

He would say, “You can't dance at two weddings at the same time.” Senator Don Nickles is on the floor, and he remembers this and has indicated (bày tỏ) so by a smile.

Because if you think you can get around it by buying from each, they quickly disabuse (tỉnh ngộ) you of the notion (quan niệm). “Look here, mister,” they tell you, “you either buy from one or the other. You can't dance at two weddings at once!”

One of the problems of a solo entrepreneur (một mình khởi nghiệp), is having a limited skill set. You want to do everything and soon find you cannot. There is an old Eastern European expression that a good friend reminded me of, “With one tuchus, you can’t dance at two weddings.”

"Give a buzz" nghĩa là gì?

Nè, lại tao kể có cái này hay lắm nè!! Photo by: Mimi Thian on Unsplash

"Give (one) a buzz" -> nghĩa là làm cho người khác cảm thấy phê, phấn khích. Nghĩa khác là gọi điện thoại.

Ví dụ
I had an overwhelming (quá nặng nề) feeling of emptiness, and now that my relationship seemed to be imploding, I did anything I could to give me a buzz. I drank too much, flirted (tán) with younger men, and spent a lot of money. On one particularly bad day, I booked a holiday that I couldn’t afford to New York City with a man I was barely speaking to.

It can give you a buzz. It takes about seven seconds for the nicotine to go through your lungs and into the brain, and so that’s part of why nicotine is addictive because you are getting an adrenal release and all those other chemicals going on in your brain associated with addiction.

At this point, everyone knows the Claw Is The Law, as the popularity of hard seltzers skyrocketed (tăng vọt) this summer. And now seemingly everyone is scrambling to give you a buzz with their bubbles. Bubbling Up Just in case you haven’t been having a proper Hot Girl/Hot Boy Summer, hard seltzers typically combine vodka, carbonated water and fruit flavoring, giving you all the ABV of a beer with fewer calories and carbohydrates, so you can still flex for the ‘Gram.

"Blown off course" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng đi đường này nha mọi người. Photo by: Free To Use Sounds on Unsplash

"Blown of course" = (bị) thổi bay khỏi tuyến đường -> nghĩa là làm gián đoạn hoặc can thiệp vào công việc của người khác. Nghĩa khác là đẩy người khỏi con đường mà họ đang đi, như thuyền buồm bị gió thổi chệch hướng.

Ví dụ
The contingency (đột xuất, bất ngờ, không kịp chuẩn bị) arrangement (sắp xếp) adds another wrinkle (khó khăn nhỏ, trục trặc, sự cố) to the plans of airlines blown off course by the Max 8 grounding, prompted after two crashes in October and March that killed 346 people, including 18 Canadians.

The results prompted (gây) concern by analysts (nhà phân tích) and investors (nhà nghiên cứu) that the strong growth Kohl's had posted for most of last year, which had helped it buck a downward trend among department stores, has come to an end. The shares fell 6.9% on Tuesday and are down 43% over the past year. "There can be no doubt that Kohl's has been blown off course," said Neil Saunders, a managing director with GlobalData PLC.

Mild (nhẹ nhàng) mannered, polite, and confident the former offensive coordinator (điều phối viên) of Corpus Christie Veterans Memorial brings hubris (xấc xược) to a ship blown off course by winds of malfeasance (phi pháp). Crosby had to hire a winner, a sure thing. Their whole athletic department was riding on this decision. Prieto was the guy. Not only an outstanding offensive mind in football Prieto is a coaches' coach having coached basketball, track, powerlifting, and wrestling (cử tạ).

"Clothes don't make the man" nghĩa là gì?

Mình thấy nó quan trọng mà! Photo courtesy: Max Short

"Clothes don't make the man" = quần áo không làm nên một người. Câu này có nghĩa là ta không nên đánh giá ai đó qua quần áo hoặc vẻ bề ngoài của ai đó. Tiếng Việt cũng có một câu rất hay là "Chiếc áo không làm nên thầy tu".

Ví dụ
Some might say that the clothes don’t make the man, but in my view, flip-flops (dép xỏ ngón) are for the beach, not the boardroom.

Ninja-K's gloves have knockout gas and (of course) retractable (có thể thu vào) nails with poison on them. That’s not counting the exoskeleton's advanced strength. Even his belt contains throwing-discs that can be used as a weapon because they are made of high tensile (sức căng) titanium. The clothes don’t make the man, but they sure help.

But unlike during the ’80s when all of my pop idols also had a similar look, now the fashion and the person are being kept independent of one another. In many ways, it’s been the best example of how we have evolved (tiến hóa) to a point where the clothes do make the look, but the clothes don’t make the man (or woman).

"Handsome is as handsome does" nghĩa là gì?

Sơn đi rồi, chỉ còn mình gỗ. Photo cortesy: Leo Douglas

"Handsome is as handsome does" là một thành ngữ rất phổ biến trong tiếng Anh và cả tiếng Việt, có ý nghĩa là "tốt gỗ hơn tốt nước sơn", "đẹp nết hơn đẹp người", tính nết và cách cư xử quan trọng hơn vẻ ngoài. Thành ngữ này khuyên chúng ta nên xét người bằng việc làm đừng xét qua lời nói.

Ví dụ
He may be homely (xấu trai), but he's the kindest man I've ever met—handsome is as handsome does.

But in the spirit of the adage (châm ngôn) “handsome is as handsome does,” some handgunners fell under the XP-100’s spell when they realized how accurately it shot and from how far they were able to hit small game, varmints (con cáo), and steel silhouette (rọi bóng) targets.

Stardom (ngôi sao điện ảnh) has become a weekly phenomenon (hiện tượng) now. Today’s stars lack the quality which keeps you in one’s heart forever. I cannot forget Dilip Kumar Saab even today. I cannot forget Raj (Kapoor) Saab. They are eternal (vĩnh cửu). They will be remembered till eternity (muôn đời). That era was a different era. Those personalities, those performances are rare to find today. During that era, an actor was required to have a pleasant (vui vẻ) personality. Today, anyone can become an actor if he or she acts well. Handsome is as handsome does. It has been proved now.

"Flesh and blood" = da thịt và máu.

They are siblings and have a right to beat each other up silly. What is the point of being each other's flesh and blood otherwise?

And even if the Air Force decides to pivot (xoay) back to humanity, ROBOpilot can be taken out of the cockpit (buồng lái) just as readily (dễ dàng) as it was put in, making room for a flesh and blood pilot to take over again, according to the press release. At no point in time is the plane itself modified (thay đổi).

We've already seen remakes of The Jungle Book, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Aladdin and The Lion King performed by flesh-and-blood humans — well, flesh-and-blood humans and a lot of visual effects work. Now, they're going back to the movie that started their Renaissance (thời kỳ Phục Hưng). Here's everything we know so far about the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

"On a collision course" = con đường tới va chạm  -> nghĩa là theo hướng chắc chắn dẫn tới xung đột, va chạm, hoặc phá hủy/sụp đổ tới người/vật khác.

Ví dụ
Jorge Masvidal thinks he and Nate Diaz are on a ‘collision course’ towards a fight that the fans are begging (cầu mong) for. It’s been less than a week since the idea of a fight between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz was first introduced but it seems that it’s the fight the MMA world wants to make and Masvidal agrees.

Bernie Sanders has promised to win the California presidential primary in March, but home-state Sen. Kamala Harris is defending her turf — putting the two on a collision course in a state both see as a critical steppingstone (bước đệm) to the White House.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic and five-time former winner Roger Federer are on a collision course to meet in the semi-finals (bán kết) of the US Open after being drawn in the top half together.

"Dusk till dawn" nghĩa là gì?

"Dusk till dawn" có từ "dusk" là hoàng hôn, lúc trời bắt đầu tối và "dawn" là bình minh -> chỉ khoảng thời gian từ hoàng hôn đến bình mình hoặc buổi tối đến sáng.

Ví dụ
No one is to be out on the street from dusk till dawn.

For example, if you want to arrange a city tour in our lovely city and its surrounding, you will be able to visit our most admirable museums and monuments (đài tưởng niệm), enjoy a nice walk through the most genuine places in Madrid, do some shopping, and of course taste our gastronomy (nghệ thuật ăn ngon, kết hợp giữa khoa học và nấu ăn) (previously thoroughly checked). When midnight comes everything changes, please let us suggest you some choices, because during night you have two options: sleep, alone or accompanied, or have fun dancing from dusk till dawn!

But you'll never be alone
I'll be with you from dusk till dawn
I'll be with you from dusk till dawn
Baby, I'm right here

"Blow a hole in" nghĩa là gì?

Dừa trái tim mới chịu cơ Photo by Artem Beliaikin from Pexels

'Blow a hole in something' = tạo lỗ thủng lớn ở (cái gì) -> gây ra thiệt hại lớn, phá hủy thứ gì; (kinh tế) tiêu tốn, sử dụng, thất thoát một lượng lớn tiền của; làm giảm hiệu quả, phá hỏng (kế hoạch, mục tiêu, hệ thống).

Ví dụ
A former finance minister yesterday urged the government to “blow a hole in the budget” to end the “national emergency” created by Bahamas Power & Light’s (BPL) generation crisis.

Compounding the issue is the fact that the federal individual income tax provisions expire (kết thúc) in 2025, while the state's "offset" cuts stay in place. This means the money Republicans are allegedly "offsetting" to pay for their cut will disappear, leaving a significant hole in state revenue.

The expectations (kì vọng, mong đợi) come on the back of newly elected PM Johnson’s raft of pledges for increased spending - including more police and more NHS funding - which, coupled with growing expectations for fiscal stimulus (kích thích tài khóa) as the economy stagnates (trì trệ) under the pressure of Brexit uncertainty and in the face of cooling global growth could blow a hole in the deficit (thâm hụt).

"Lose my appetite" nghĩa là gì?

Nhìn thôi đã thấy "healthy" rồi Photo by Trang Doan from Pexels

'Lose one's appetite' = mất cảm giác thèm ăn -> không còn hứng thú ăn uống

Ví dụ
While the goal was to experience the much-talked about ‘plant-based’ meals, whipped up chef Paul Svensson, an exhibition by Mandy Barker caught my fancy (lôi cuốn, thu hút), but made me lose my appetite.

It wasn’t the first time a medicine caused me to lose my appetite, nor would it be the last. It was summer vacation, and my friends had all just gotten their licenses (bằng). We planned adventures for almost every day. But as I began to lose more and more weight, I became weaker and tired easily. That didn’t stop me from trying to keep up, though, because everywhere I went, I was complimented on my slim figure.

When I’m operating at a high activity level for days on end, I actually lose my appetite. When I slow it down my appetite returns, and I end up hungrier on low-activity days than I do on high-output ones. Because my body is trying to repair muscle (cơ bắp), I’m going to need more nutrients (chất dinh dưỡng). I make sure I’m hydrating, and I’m careful to eat a wide range of foods that really complement recovery, like fresh fruits and vegetables.

'Lose one's shit' -> (cách nói thô thiển/thô lỗ) mất kiểm soát bản thân, hành động; chửi mắng, chỉ trích ai

Ví dụ
CLL was a real step up (bước tiến; tăng cường). If Foley reappears for the ABs game I will really lose my shit. Would love to see Valetini or Pete Samu given a go at the 6 role, I think they will be the most impactful options there.

In all seriousness (tính chất quan trọng), JoJo said she is hoping for the big day to be “outdoor, beautiful, whimsical (kì quái),” with “tons of greenery.””On my wedding day, no matter what happens, I’m not going to lose my shit if something doesn’t go right, I need to enjoy that day!” the former Bachelorette promised.

Any musician that tells you they didn't start out as a fan of someone before they pursued (theo đuổi) their own career is lying. If I got a text from Mick Jagger or Freddie Mercury or Julian Casablancas, right now, on this regular afternoon, I would lose my shit. Connecting with my fans is so very important to me. We are in this together. And I couldn't do this if I didn't have them.

"Raise my hackles" nghĩa là gì?

Yên tâm có mẹ ở đây rồi các con Photo by Ro han from Pexels

'Raise one's hackles' = xù lông (hackles: lông vũ trên cổ gà trống); sửng cồ -> làm ai thấy khó chịu, bực dọc, tức giận.

Ví dụ
There is only one thing I can envision (mường tượng, hình dung) someone doing to the humble sausage in bread construction that would raise my hackles: putting the onion on the bread first, before the sausage.

And I hope Albanese isn’t planning to roll over on issues like “religious freedom” without such a contest, because the very words raise my hackles for their pretence (ra vẻ, giả vờ) of neutrality (trung lập), implying such freedom doesn’t come at others’ expense.

Last month, Schiewe's wife also noticed a fraudulent (lừa đảo) charge of $18.05 to Walgreens on her TD account. It was also reversed without her knowledge. "It does raise my hackles because there's been no proactive information or disclosure (phơi bày, công khai) from TD," he said.

“It did raise my hackles at first, the idea of making choices for your story based on data,” Davis said. “I thought of data as boring scientific survey stuff, but data can be answers to questions like: Whose story is this? What moved you the most? It can be creative (sáng tạo) information.”

"Soften the blow" nghĩa là gì?

Đối thoại chứ không đối đầu Photo by Jopwell from Pexels

'Soften the blow' = làm mềm/xoa dịu cú đấm -> làm tình huống xấu trở nên bớt nghiêm trọng hơn

Ví dụ
“Crop insurance (bảo hiểm) is like life insurance: It’s the last thing you want to collect because you don’t benefit from it,” Thomas said. “It protects some aspects of your operation, but you can’t make a living on crop insurance. It helps soften the blow.”

Increasing oil prices have helped soften the blow of Algeria’s economic morass (bãi lầy). From February 22-August 15, Algeria’s Saharan Blend crude oil (dầu thô) sold at an average of $67.12 per barrel, more than $17 above the average of $50 budgeted by the government for 2019.

Boeing (BA) landed a contract worth up to $999 million to produce wing sets for the A-10 Thunderbolt II. It helps soften the blow after the Pentagon canceled the Dow Jones stock's contract to produce a "kill vehicle" to shoot down missiles (tên lửa) from North Korea or Iran.

Getting nothing in return when your best player walks away is painful. It can turn a contending (chiến đấu) team into to a rebuild overnight. The Cleveland Cavaliers had to go through this heartache (nỗi đau buồn) twice after LeBron James left in free agency. But if you have a good foundation in place, you can soften the blow.

"Dance on the razor's edge" nghĩa là gì?

OMG!!! Photo courtesy Moira

"Dance on the razor's edge" = nhảy trên lưỡi dao lam -> làm điều nguy hiểm. Tương tự với “dance with death”.

Ví dụ
After dancing on the razor's edge for several years it now appears that AC/DC have confirmed (xác nhận) that they will release a new album.

Draymond Green is dancing on the razor’s edge. The Warriors forward is one technical foul (lỗi kỹ thuật) away from earning a suspension (đình chỉ) for a potential Game 7 versus the Raptors in the NBA Finals.

Where their peers (đồng nghiệp) either fell too much on the pop side (Fall Out Boy, Panic!) or on the more obscure (bí ẩn) side (Hot Rod Circuit, The Get Up Kids) of the emo divide, The Starting Line always managed to just dance on that razor’s edge and ingratiate (lấy lòng) themselves with just about everyone.

"Dance on air" = nhảy trên không, nhảy lên cao-> phấn khích, vui vẻ.

Ví dụ
You may feel as if you are dancing on air.

Quinn made her feel like she was dancing on air. After their third time around the floor, their guests joined the couple in finishing their dance.

Alice, the tiniest vampire (ma-cà-rồng bé nhất) in the Cullen family, moves so gracefully (duyên dáng), it looks as if she is dancing on air all the time.

“If I were in your shoes, I'd dance — I would dance on air! I would bless my lucky star, there'd be smiles to spare, if I were who you are." I understood vividly (sống động) why the song said what it said and didn't say what it couldn't say.

"Dance to another tune" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Alexander Andrews on Unsplash

"Dance to another tune" = nhảy múa trên điệu nhạc khác -> thay đổi lối sống, thói quen để phủ hợp với hoàn cảnh mới. Ngoài ra, “dance to one’s tune” có nghĩa là làm theo ai, để cho ai điều khiển.

Ví dụ
We are on earth to dance to our own tune! We have to know who I the individual is. Do we take on other people's words to be our words?

Well, I can promise you this: you'll dance to another tune from now on! You'll find a difference when you're a pauper (kẻ ăn xin)! Most of your precious drinking and gaming friends will no longer wish to know you!

Furthermore, that walk-in needs a global structure (cấu trúc toàn cầu) that, in its rhythmic (nhịp điệu) possibilities, must be intimated to those young enough to dance to another tune, dance against the stale pacings of convention (quy tắc nhịp cũ).

Thu Phương

"Out of tune" nghĩa là gì?

"Out of tune" = lạc nhịp, không theo giai điệu -> lỗi thời/ không hòa hợp với người khác.

Ví dụ
Rates traders are gearing up (chuẩn bị) for a keynote speech from Federal Reserve (Cục Dự trữ Liên bang) Chairman Jerome Powell in Jackson Hole on Friday that could be wildly out of tune with their expectations.

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa will not be part of the Political Actors Dialogue convened (triệu tập) by President Emmerson Mnangagwa with the party describing the process as an out of tune choir (dàn hợp ca).

"Make a mental note" nghĩa là gì?

Nếu sợ quên cứ viết hết ra rồi dán lên tường Photo by Startup Stock Photos from Pexels

'Make a mental note' = làm một ghi nhớ trong đầu -> ghi nhớ; cố gắng lưu giữ trong đầu

Ví dụ
David said everything was sorted out in the end and admitted he “doesn’t mind” when things go badly wrong, as he added: “I just make a mental note and think that will be a good story.”

The bracelets (vòng tay) are made of small beads shaped like fish and turtles, all resembling rock candy, which is edible (ăn được) and was a popular souvenir when we were kids. We purchase nine and make a mental note to tell the girls not to try eating them.

Delete all of your spam e-mails as soon as you wake up and unsubscribe from every self-help-blog newsletter. You already know what you’re doing! Make a mental note to book “appointments” but don’t specify which ones. Write down all the Wi-Fi passwords of every network you’ve ever connected to, just in the off chance you ever return to that same Starbucks in Istanbul.

There’s an in-room washbasin (bồn rửa) and an en-suite toilet and shower. It’s almost worth booking a journey for the delicious smelling Arran Aromatics toiletries alone, while there are plenty of power points and room service is available. The bed itself (which has a Glencraft mattress) is smaller than I expected, and if I was even just a little taller or wider I would have found it a squeeze. I make a mental note to book one of the cabins with a double bed next time.

"Dance attendance on" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Gift Habeshaw on Unsplash

"Dance attendance on/upon someone" có nghĩa là nghe lời hoặc làm hài lòng ai đó một cách ngoan ngoãn, khúm núm. Xuất phát từ phong tục xưa, khi cô dâu phải khiêu vũ với các vị khách trong tiệc cưới dù muốn hay không. Cụm từ này cũng có nghĩa phải chờ đợi ai lâu.

Ví dụ
It’s unnatural for the captain to ask the sailors to accept his authority (quyền hành) and it's unnatural for wise men to dance attendance on rich men; this story is misleading (sai lệch).

'What has this to do with Ryecot?' 'He was there.' Luke again told himself to be patient (kiên nhẫn). 'So you have said.' 'I thought you'd like to know. He was dancing attendance on her, and she looked as though she liked it.'

The suspense (chờ đợi, hồi hộp) would be hard to bear, but I could dance attendance on you for the remainder of the Season (mùa còn lại)—make you the envy of the ton, if possible—God knows you deserve it!—and wait until autumn to ask for your hand (cầu hôn).
