"Feel out of sorts" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by kike vega on Unsplash

"Feel/be out of sorts" có nghĩa là cảm thẩy không vui, không khỏe, trong trạng thái tinh thần không tốt.

Ví dụ
“When you go from 212 pounds to 190, there’s not as much weight going forward through the ball,” he said. “I don’t have as much feel. I just feel out of sorts.”

Yoga, she tells me over coffee at Knightsbridge beauty house Urban Retreat, is her one constant (điều bất biến) — “like brushing my teeth”. “If I don’t do it every day I end up feeling a bit out of sorts — I don’t feel grounded, focused.”

“Almost every EU citizen in the UK has been affected by Brexit to some extent. Some people are just feeling out of sorts, but there are some people who feel they can’t stay here any more and some who just can’t cope who have anxiety, insomnia (mất ngủ), are getting panic attacks, feelings of paranoia (hoang tưởng) and suicide ideation [suicidal thoughts],” she said.

"A little bit of bread and no cheese" nghĩa là gì?

"A little bit of bread and no cheese" = một ít bánh mì và đừng bỏ phô mai.

Logic would indicate the latter (cái sau), as the 'song of the Yellowhammer' is also known as 'a little bit of bread and no cheese' which would appear to be a nod to the possible food shortages that Britain is likely to experience in a no-deal scenario (viễn cảnh).

The yellowhammer’s tune is believed to sound like someone saying “A little bit of bread and no cheese”. When naming their preparations for stockpiling (dự trữ) food and other essentials (thứ cần thiết), the UK government evoked (gợi lên) the yellowhammer’s report of a bare kitchen cupboard.

I wonder if the choice of the name “Yellowhammer” for the scenario after a no-deal Brexit was down to the fact that the song of the bird of the same name has a rhythm which sounds like “a little bit of bread and no cheese”. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings (những người khờ khạo, những người thiếu kinh nghiệm)... and little yellow birds!

"A little green" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Joshua Rawson-Harris on Unsplash

“I was just waiting for the moment. I didn’t want to move too early because I knew I had a lot of horse under me. I was trying to wait as long as I could. He lugged in a bit, he’s still a little green. I had a lot of horse at the end. He’s a nice horse,” Franco said.

Armory doesn’t have Pinatubo to contend (tranh đấu) with today after chasing home the Godolphin superstar at The Curragh last time. That was over 7f and this extra furlong should be right up his street. Despite having a couple of Group wins to his name, he looked a little green last time and has a lot more to offer.

Make sure you apply the words of wisdom throughout your career, not just when you are a little green behind the ears. Pay special attention to the new trends and developments within your industry, as well as seize (chộp lấy) on every opportunity to attend training sessions that apply to your job. As they say, change is here to stay. The key for you is to remain ahead of the change curve.

"Feel hard done-by" nghĩa là gì?

"Feel/be hard done-by" có nghĩa là cảm thấy bị đối xử tệ bạc, không công bằng.

Ví dụ
Former Premier League referee (trọng tài) Dermot Gallagher believes Leeds United and Gaetano Berardi were hard done by at Millwall on Saturday.

“When you feel hard-done-by and one of your players is so upset because he’s not playing … you can make a meaning to it,” he told reporters at Tokyo Stadium after confirming (xác nhận) Australia would not be appealing against the ban.

While Tonga pushed France all the way and Fiji can feel hard done by in their defeat to (thất bại trước) Australia, the two nations combined with Samoa have collectively lost seven of their nine Rugby World Cup pool games and only Fiji have an outside chance of making the knock-out (loại trực tiếp) stages.

"The biter bit" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Timothy Barlin on Unsplash

"The biter (is) bit" = bị cắn câu -> cụm từ này nghĩa là kẻ bị lừa trước khi định lừa người khác, bợm già mắc bẫy cò ke. Những kẻ lão luyện, tài giỏi tới đâu mà chủ quan thì có ngày cũng sa cơ thất thế, y như hình ảnh những tên chuyên đi lừa gạt người khác nhưng cuối cùng lại bị mắc bẫy cò ke tầm thường.

Ví dụ
Rob Rhead, from May Bank: "Six minutes added time? You might think it was the biter bit after we equalised (san bằng tỉ số) in added time last week. The only difference was we didn't spend the match wasting time."

Inevitably the scandal breaks, and a media frenzy (sự điên cuồng) explodes around them. To escape the “ferret run” they flee (chạy trốn) to Antigua where, somehow unsurprisingly, they meet Piers Morgan on holiday. It is a classic case of the biter bit.

In an interview with French gay glossy Tetu, the two women said the kiss was a gesture of solidarity with gay and lesbian couples who cannot marry in France. In a blog post at the AFP's website, photographer Julien discussed the symbolism: “This picture, it's like the story of the biter bit, a reversal (sự thay đổi hoàn toàn, sự đảo ngược) of symbolism without their knowing it. Everyone has been surprised by this shot. The protesters (người phản đối) were in shock!”

"Twelve good people and true" nghĩa là gì?

"Twelve good people and true" = 12 người tốt bụng và chân thật -> Chỉ ban hội thẩm/ban giám khảo/bồi thẩm đoàn liêm khiết, chính trực, thật thà và đáng tin cậy.

Ví dụ
Though some are hailing (giáng xuống, hoan hô) the outcome (kết quả) as as proof of a transformed system, and a “major shift in how twelve good people and true see police officers,”

The result of a two-year study of Scottish twelve good people and true , which took evidence (bằng chứng) from 1,000 jurors, is expected to lead to a consultation (sự hội ý giữa các luật sư) to consider reducing the size of juries and giving a choice of only two verdicts (phán quyết).

Many people don’t realise that twelve good people and true that are chosen (or empanelled) (đưa vào danh sách thẩm phán) for criminal (tội phạm) and civil trials (phiên tòa xử án) in Victoria is subject to a process where potential jurors (thành viên ban hội thẩm) are dismissed (gạt bỏ, sa thải) with no reason given - and often on the back of as little information as their appearance.

"Without ceremony" nghĩa là gì?

Yêu nhau không ngại thể hiện tình cảm Photo by Rafael Neres from Pexels

'Without ceremony' = không khách sáo, tự nhiên, không câu nệ.

Ví dụ
“Without ceremony as they were strolling (đi qua) in front of me, I just heard the words ‘I’m gay’ coming out of my mouth. Both my parents said they knew since I was four years old, and I felt an immense relief.”

Owen said she will assume the title of chief judge without ceremony, additional oath (lời thề) of office or even a party. She also will keep her chambers in downtown Austin without having to move to New Orleans, where the court is based. Asked Monday if she was looking forward to the new job, Owen laughed. “Well, I am happy to do the work. It will be a lot of extra work,” she told the American-Statesman.

The Ukrainians were met at the Kyiv airport by an emotional crowd of relatives and journalists – and by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, whose bodyguards (vệ sĩ) were pushed aside during the chaotic scene. In Moscow, Ukraine’s former prisoners, of whom 13 were Ukrainian citizens and the rest Russians, were bused away without ceremony; some of them face months of intelligence debriefings (phỏng vấn).

"Idle people have the least leisure" nghĩa là gì?

"Idle people have the least leisure" = Người nhàn rỗi thì rất ít thời gian rảnh -> Nếu bạn là người lười biếng, không hăng hái và không năng động thì sẽ không bao giờ có thời gian rảnh vì bạn sẽ phải dành tất cả thời gian để hoàn thành tất cả mọi việc/làm tất cả công việc chưa xong/dồn công việc mà làm.

Ví dụ
My brother is a kind of living proof (bằng chứng sống) of the proverb (tục ngữ) "Idle people have the least leisure. Such a lazy guy!

I'm so worried about my lazy son, he's been sleeping all day and it makes no surprise that "idle people have the least leisure".

It's not easy to give up a bad habit even though it's has made my life worse. Wasting time, oversleeping and procrastinating (trì hoãn, chần chừ, nước tới chân mới nhảy) are surrounding me. My mom always tells me "idle people have the least leisure".

"All able-bodied people" nghĩa là gì?

"All able-bodied people" = Tất cả mọi người lành lặn/khỏe mạnh => Bất kỳ ai/tất cả mọi người mà có thể giúp đỡ/đóng góp phần nào/sức lực để làm một công việc nào đó.

Ví dụ
"They're all able-bodied people who have everything at their fingertips (đầu ngón tay). But they still find reasons why they can't work out or make their step goal for the day.

Maybe they should require all able bodied people to open carry firearms (mang súng) in arcata? I will guarantee (đảm bảo, cam đoan) there will be less stabbings (ít vụ đâm nhau)! Lol.

He also addressed homelessness with a four-part plan: The city should “discourage all able bodied people that can work and do not want to work from staying in our city,” should support and enable law enforcement (tuân theo luật) to “remove from the street anybody that breaks the law or are a danger,” should establish programs “to help everyone less fortunate who are able and willing to work,” and finally, assist homeless people who can’t work by placing them in facilities where “they get the proper health and care.”

"Be all things to all people" = Làm tất cả mọi điều vì mọi người -> Cố gắng/nổ lực, thay đổi bản thân và cách cư xử để làm hài lòng tất cả mọi người (people-pleaser).

Ví dụ
On the other hand, Samsung's software is incredibly capable and packed with features, but in trying to be all things to all people.

We have never tried to be all things to all people like other travel providers that offer accommodations (chỗ ở), air travel, rental cars (xe cho thuê), etc.

“Colleges try to be all things to all people, but these different jobs-to-be-done are pulling against each other, resulting in one-size-fits-none and driving up overhead (chi phí hành chính, chi phí quản lý) dealing with all the complexity (phức tạp, rắc rối),” Horn said.

"A woman's work is never done" nghĩa là gì?

"A woman's work is never done" = Công việc của phụ nữ không bao giờ là xong cả -> Theo truyền thống thì phụ nữ cứ làm miết những công việc nhà/chăm con, lo cho chồng và con cái và sẽ không bao giờ xong. Vì đó được xem như là điều thường tình.

Ví dụ
"A man may Work is from sun to sun, a woman's work is never done.” Only in this case, you can replace the word “woman's” with business exec (giám đốc điều hành) or owner (chủ doanh nghiệp).

“A woman’s work is never done,” or that’s what I was always told. Normally by an exasperated (bực tức, điên lên) mother as she dragged a damp cloth over the kitchen counter.

"A woman's work is never done" has long summed up the reality of frenetic (điên cuồng), frequently exhausting, lives. After a week when women grimaced (nhăn mặt) at news that a female screenwriter for the hit film Crazy Rich Asians had left the Warner Bros sequel (tập phim) over a huge pay gap with a male counterpart (người cùng địa vị, người tương nhiệm) and wondered where the next insult (lăng mạ) is coming from, there's no time like the present for creative solutions.

"Poor little rich boy" nghĩa là gì?

"Poor little rich boy" = Cậu nhóc nhà giàu tội nghiệp -> Chỉ những thanh niên/những đứa trẻ con nhà giàu có nhưng của cải có được không đem lại hạnh phúc hay sự thỏa mãn cho họ. Thường được dùng để diễn đạt sự cảm thông giả tạo hay chế giễu ai đó.

Ví dụ
McKay was a bad boy with a heart of gold, a surfer dude with an old soul, a poor little rich boy with negligent (cẩu thả, lơ đểnh) parents and a drinking problem.

Further, I predict he will be treated on the program as the “poor little rich boy” who is taken back into the fold of the young (nhóm thanh niên cùng chung quyền lợi, mục đích) (but fast-aging) (già hóa nhanh) Charleston aristocracy (tầng lớp quý tộc) that the “reality” show revolves around. Or so I’m told, as I’ve never actually seen Southern Charm.

The start of The Great Gatsby, America’s premier (nhất, đầu về vị trí) poor-little-rich-boy novel, features a memorable quote from narrator Nick Carraway: “Frequently I had feigned sleep, preoccupation, or a hostile levity (sự khinh nhẹ kẻ địch) when I realized by some unmistakable sign that an intimate revelation (sự tiết lộ gợi ý) was quivering (run, rung lên) in the horizon.”

"Peck's bad boy" nghĩa là gì?

"Peck's bad boy" = Peck là một gã hư đốn -> Chỉ một người có hành vi nguy hiểm, tinh quái và dâm dục. Ám chỉ một nhân vật hư cấu bởi George Wilbur Peck vào năm 1883.

Ví dụ
Each comedian performing in burlesque (trò khôi hài) had a different persona. That person had a nationality and, usually, an accent (chất giọng) and accompanying dialect (tiếng địa phương). There was the hobo (người sống và làm việc lêu lổng), with a stubble of a beard (bộ râu mọc lởm chởm) and a bulbous (phồng ra) nose; the Dutch comic; and the persona known as “Peck’s bad boy,” after the kid who is a rascal, who always gets into trouble.

In his years with The Post, Fowler was the definition (định nghĩa) of a Peck’s Bad Boy. His drinking, womanizing (quan hệ lăng nhăng với nhiều phụ nữ), carousing (chè chén) and sudden disappearances (biến mất đột ngột) were legendary (huyền thoại), as was his brilliance (sự tài giỏi, lỗi lạc) as a newspaperman (nhà báo). He was, said his son, also a newspaperman and writer who was given to “unpredictable whims (ý chợt nảy ra không đoán được).”

As former general manager (tổng giám đốc cũ) Pat Williams once told me, “Iverson probably sold more season tickets than Wilt (Chamberlain) and Julius (Erving). There was a great love affair (chuyện tình, ngoại tình) with him. He was everybody’s rascal (kẻ bất lương, ranh con), Peck’s Bad Boy. He was always in trouble with the teacher. He stirred (kích động) people’s emotions. Nobody was ever neutral (bình thường, trung lập) with him.”

"Go out with the boys" nghĩa là gì?

"Go out with the boys" = Ra ngoài chơi với trai -> Đi chơi, gặp gỡ, giao du đâu đó với nhóm bạn toàn con trai với nhau.

Ví dụ
"He'll never miss (a chance) to go out with the boys - whether it's lunch or coffee or to one of the boys' houses. "He's been fantastic this year.

(“Whenever I get a chance, I go out with the boys and I try to show them like what girls can really do,” says Mi'kmaw hockey player Erin Denny.

'Over Drinking' is something of a Nashville ballad, with lyrics including: “Yeah, I’m over drinking, over you/I’m done with bottles of chasing the blues/I’ll still go out with the boys and knock back a few/But I’m over drinking, over you.”

"Separate the men from the boys" nghĩa là gì?

"Separate the men from the boys" = Tách biệt giữa người đàn ông trưởng thành với những cậu nhóc -> Phân biệt/tách biệt những người người tham gia có kinh nghiệm, đủ trình độ và rất mạnh với người chưa có kinh nghiệm, không đủ khả năng và yếu kém.

Ví dụ
And if you don't have mentality (tâm thần, trí lực), then that will separate the men from the boys. You need to stand up and be thick skinned and get on with it.

In response to (phản hồi, đáp lại) Danielle's tweet, another joked: "How to separate the men from the boys." A third wrote: "Yeah meat, cheese and grapes is a pretty big step."

In the case of the plebes (học sinh năm thứ nhất trường hải quân) (or Fourth Class), they are humorously considered as “beasts,” as in Beast Barracks, their dormitory (ký túc xá), or low class citizens bereft (bị tước đi) of dignity and human rights (run, don’t walk, don’t reason why but do and die, etc.), while the upperclassmen are “masters” whose job is to separate the men from the boys and get rid of (loại bỏ) the unfit (người không đủ tư cách, năng lực).

"Go (something) at like a boy killing snakes" = Đi với tốc độ nhanh như giết rắn -> Làm một việc với hết sức lực/khả năng của mình.

Ví dụ
Everything I do, do it for you as go at like a boy killing snakes.

This is the last chance to pass the examination, so he might go at his materials like a boy killing snakes.

Have you ever thought about the last day you live on the earth? What will you like to do the most with your family? "Not stand on ceremony" nghĩa là gì?

Xinh là được, mọi thứ khác để anh lo Photo by Gustavo Linhares from Pexels

'Not stand on ceremony' có từ 'ceremony' là lập trường, quan điểm -> không giữ vững lập trường, nghi thức.

Ví dụ
In simple terms, it was a case of the Pilgrims getting their retaliation (trả đũa) in first, and that is sometimes what you need to do in League Two. Argyle did not stand on ceremony with their challenges and, yes, some of them were mistimed (không đúng lúc) and worthy of bookings.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran does not stand on ceremony with any country in the world when it comes to Palestine,” the Leader said in a meeting with a high-ranking delegation (đại biểu) from Hamas, adding, “We have always expressed our views on Palestine clearly and transparently.”

So if player X is a good defender, but a complete non-factor on offense, he’ll most likely rank lower than player Y who can contribute on both ends of the floor, but only at an average level. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s not stand on ceremony any longer, let’s get into the top-5 players on the 2019-2020 Los Angeles Lakers.

"Forty minutes of hell" nghĩa là gì?

"Forty minutes of hell" = bốn mươi phút địa ngục -> nghĩa là trận đấu bóng rổ nghẹt thở trong suốt bốn mươi phút.

Ví dụ
When North Carolina senior Kenny Williams talks about his defensive philosophy (triết lý), he smiles, knowing his response will elicit (gợi ra) a reaction. “Forty minutes of hell.” To put it mildly (nhẹ nhàng), Williams wants to make things difficult for his opponent. Or in the words of Williams, he wants “to make the night a living hell for whoever the coaches want me to guard.”

Missouri promotes its fullcourt, frenetic (điên cuồng) style as the Fastest 40 Minutes in Basketball, and it is no coincidence (trùng hợp) that it looks a lot like the famed “40 minutes of hell” run by Arkansas with great success in the 1990s. After all, Missouri Coach Mike Anderson was a longtime assistant to Nolan Richardson at Arkansas. “Forty minutes of hell is what it is,” Anderson said. “It’s just a different name.”

I would like to thank Coach Richardson for not only teaching us forty minutes of hell, but being willing to go through hell to get us the national championship title (danh hiệu).
