"Give a blank look" nghĩa là gì?

"Give (one) a blank look" = Nhìn ai bằng ánh mắt/cái nhìn ngây dại -> Nhìn ai mà không biểu lộ cảm xúc trên gương mặt, thường là vì quá bối rối, không biết như thế nào hoặc quá ngập tràn cảm xúc bởi điều gì.

Ví dụ
The number of people who give me a blank look when I ask them why they want to take a photo at a certain time, or place, or event, is amazing.

But when I ask them what are they looking forward to in the position on offer, they give me a blank look and some even say they are not sure.

In this city I’ve always felt the need to explain myself and where I come from. People are shocked when they find out about our woodstove and lack of TV during my childhood, especially when I tell them that I was perfectly happy with the way things were. But often when I try to tell somebody about any of it, they just give me a blank look, like they’re trying to understand but have no frame of reference to create a picture.

"Give up (someone or something) for lost" = Từ bỏ và chịu thua cuộc trước ai/điều gì -> Từ bỏ theo đuổi ai/cái gì vì bạn không hy vọng làm được điều đó hoặc không thể tìm được.

Ví dụ
We always knew it would be very difficult, and it would be difficult for Marc to fail. That said, to think we didn’t have a chance after the victories in the middle of the championship would have been stupid. Yes, we thought it was possible. When Marc and his Honda are on the scene, we have to respect them, but give up for lost? No, never.

When Charles I was executed on Sancroft’s birthday in 1649, Sancroft wrote in despair (nỗi tuyệt vọng) to his father: “The black act is done . . . which an age cannot expiate (chuộc, đền tội). . . The church here will never rise again, though the kingdom should. The universities we give up for lost. . . In the mean time, there are caves and dens of the earth, and upper rooms and secret chambers (buồng, phòng), for a church in persecution (ngược đãi, hành hạ) to flee to, and there shall be our refuge (nơi ẩn nấu).”

"Give (one) the screaming abdabs" = La hét khiến người ta bực tức, khó chịu; làm người ta điên tiết lên.

Ví dụ
A certain Jurgen Klopp is getting more jitters (sự bồn chồn, hốt hoảng) and the screaming abdabs than anyone of us.

And there is a relatively easy way of doing this that has the added bonus of giving civil libertarians (người theo chủ nghĩa tự do) the screaming abdabs.

How different things might have been, eh? This is a gorgeous object, packed with beautifully reproduced drawings, posters, comics and merch-andise, including a gatefold (gấp một cửa) spread of frankly sinister Mickey effigies (hình vẽ, hình nộm) that would give any child the screaming abdabs.

Rockstar Games also released Red Dead Redemption 2 for PCs this year. The game was previously available for consoles in 2018. The game has sold over 26.5 million copies since its inception (khởi đầu) last year. The game got off on a wrong foot when it was released for PC as it didn’t have support for the Ray Tracing technology which can be seen in the latest RTX Graphics cards by NVIDIA.

Their relationship is built on an equal partnership (a running pattern in the horror genre it seems) and sweet respect for each other. Though they initially get off on the wrong foot, by the end of the film there is an unshakeable (không thể lay chuyển) bond (mối quan hệ) between them that continues throughout the series — in the Mummy Returns, despite having been married for several years, they're still as sweet on each other as they were after their first adventure.

One of the most important details in logo design basics is choosing a legible (dễ đọc) font. As a business owner, you’ll have to walk a fine line between having an eye-catching font and making sure people can name your company. Before you approve a logo design, make sure you print it in various sizes to make sure the quality and legibility (rõ ràng) hold up in any form.

Bàn về đám tang “văn minh”

nhật bản ko bàn, làm luôn, ra mắt bộ dụng cụ tự làm đám ma giá 6 triệu đồng,
Tsubasa, a funerary services company based in Nagano Prefecture, has begun taking orders for its new DIY Funeral Set. The set includes a wooden coffin, with a fold-open window to show the face of the deceased (người quá cố), as well as a pillow (gối), mattress (nệm, đệm), and blanket (chăn). The package also provides an urn (bình đựng di cốt, bình đựng tro hoả táng) for ashes and a silver-accented box to hold the bones left over after cremation (hỏa táng), as well as three furoshiki wrapping cloths. Finally, there’s a handbook that explains how to perform the ceremony’s rites (nghi lễ) to put the soul (linh hồn) of the departed (người mới mất) at ease (thanh thản).

Priced at 25,800 yen (US$240), the DIY Funeral Set is a major savings over the services of a professional funeral hall. Not that we’re planning on dying anytime soon, but a bit of online research shows that the average price of a funeral in Japan is somewhere around 2 million yen, so Tsubasa’s kit is a huge savings.

We should point out that the kit is only meant to give buyers what they need for the funeral ceremony itself. The handbook doesn’t teach you how to use cosmetics to prepare the deceased’s face, so you may still need to contact a mortician (người làm dịch vụ lễ tang) for that, and you’ll also need the services of a licensed crematorium after the ceremony.

Jane Healy, a high school science teacher, said motorists sometimes shout insults or give her the "hairy eyeball" when she bikes in the campus (sân trường).

But it's not a subject I have ever broached (bắt đầu, đề cập) before with my male friends who are married. Probably because, by and large, if I were to ask what men think and task them to describe how they make marriage work, they would give me the hairy eyeball and ask if I was drunk. The truth of the matter is that whatever they might want you to think, men definitely have their own opinions about marriage.

Cue the phone call. As a veteran (kỳ cựu) SEO professional, I know what it’s like to be on the other end of that call. I’ve had my share of nervous site owners give me an earful for “letting” their pages slide in the rankings. Usually, they ask, “What happened to my site?”

While in China for the 2016 US election myself, I saw some similar themes among the Chinese public. Chinese state media had long portrayed (mô tả chân dung) Clinton in an unfavorable light, and this was evident among even the cleaning staff at my office, who, when learning that I was American, would gladly give me an earful expressing their distaste (sự ghê tởm, không thích) for her.
