"Land a blow" nghĩa là gì?

Láo nháo là không xong với chị đâu. Photo by Sarah Cervantes on Unsplash

"Land a blow/punch in (someone's eye)" = giáng một quả đấm vào (mắt ai). Cũng có nghĩa là nêu lên luận điểm tranh luận thành công.

Ví dụ
Keep your wrist straight as you land the punch into your opponent (đối thủ). Your goal is to hit him with your first and second knuckles (khớp đốt tay) because these two are reinforced by the bones of your wrist.

The man was swinging his sword (vung kiếm) so hard, even Ariston knew if he ever connected, Evan would undoubtably (chắc chắn) be knocked out of the match (bị loại khỏi trận đấu) . Evan would land a blow here and there, but they seemed to have little to no success in hurting the large man.

Donald Trump sought Wednesday to land a massive blow in his long-fought battle (chiến đấu trường kỳ) against the news media, with administration lawyers asserting in court (khẳng định trước tòa) that the president could bar (cấm) “all reporters” from the White House complex for any reason he sees fit.

"In the Land of Nod" nghĩa là gì?

"In the Land of Nod" có nghĩa là ngủ thiếp đi. "Nod" trong "nod off" là tư thế gật đầu khi ngủ gật. "Land of Nod" cũng là một địa danh trong Kinh thánh.

Ví dụ
Shakespeare wrote, “We are such stuff as dreams are made on,” but what is that elusive substance (cốt lõi khó nắm bắt)? Interpreting (giải thích) the goings-on when we’re in the Land of Nod has baffled (gây trở ngại) researchers for millennia (hàng nghìn năm).

The seat/bed comes with a special harness (bảo hộ đặc biệt) for babies and is fitted with cleverly-designed seat-belts (dây an toàn thông minh) for grown ups, meaning they're totally safe if the plane happens to hit with turbulence as you're in the land of nod.

The trick, of course, is to not forget the idea when they go back to sleep. The simplest and best advice (lời khuyên đơn giản nhất và tốt nhất) is to keep a pen and pad next to the bed so the thought can be captured (ghi lại) before it escapes back into the land of nod.

"Blight on the land" nghĩa là gì?

Cái bạn nhìn thấy hoàn toàn không phải sương mù, mà là khói bụi công nghiệp, gây ô nhiễm không khí. Photo by sophia valkova on Unsplash

"Blight on the land" = đất đai, môi trường bị tàn phá.

Ví dụ
In 1954, Los Angeles became one of the first cities to address smog (giải quyết vấn đề khói bụi), described by one local newspaper as a “blight on the land of sunshine”.

As well as the impact of thousands of additional vehicle movements (phương tiện giao thông) on the roads, increased air and noise pollution (ô nhiễm không khí và tiếng ồn), the blight on the landscape and that the sites are not earmarked (địa điểm không được đánh dấu) for industrial development (phát triển công nghiệp).

The mysterious world of Thra is out of balance (mất cân bằng). The Crystal of Truth, the heart of all mystic forces (thế lực huyền bí) on Thra, has become tainted (vết nhơ). Now the imbalance (mất cân bằng) is reaching a critical point, releasing a force (giải phóng thế lực) known as The Darkening that threatens to spread a devastating (tàn phá) blight over the land.

“In the land of the living” nghĩa là gì?

Một cách chậm rãi, hãy cảm nhận sự sống qua từng hơi thở. Photo by angiemoodyphotography

"In the land of the living" = vùng đất của sự sống -> sống, tồn tại/thức dậy, thức tỉnh.

Ví dụ
His spirit (linh hồn) tells her it's okay to pursue a life of love without him, and she returns to the land of the living, filled with closure (khép kín).

Bennett might be the only guy from these painstakingly salvaged (được bảo vệ cẩn thận) cassettes who’s still in the land of the living; others interviewed include Holiday’s friends, relatives, band members…

David said in Psalms (sách Thánh ca) 27:13 that; I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord (nhân từ của Chúa) in the land of the living. So often life gives us reasons to be dejected (chán nản), depressed (tuyệt vọng), and dispirited (mất tinh thần).

“Doing a land-office business “ nghĩa là gì?

Sức hút không phải dạng vừa của cửa hàng là đây. Photo by amandaziphotography on Unsplash

“Doing a land-office business” có nghĩa công việc làm ăn phát đạt, buôn bán thuận lợi.

The Publix supermarket chain (chuỗi siêu thị), Florida’s largest (whom I recommend BTW), does a land office business during the pre-hurricane frenzy (thời tiết điên cuồng trước bão).

People were wearing Trump shirts and Trump pins. These were not all registered Republicans (Đảng viên Đảng Cộng hòa), either. There was a large booth (gian hàng lớn) selling Trump merchandise (hàng hóa) and doing a land office business.

With the exception of the Smash Bros fighters, I’m willing to bet a lot of the people in the potential market (thị trường tiềm năng) won’t have heard of all of the game’s characters — and they comprise (bao gồm) the backbone (trụ cột) of the gameplay and microtransactions (chuyển tác vi mô). And yet the app‘s still done land-office business, averaging about $21 million a month for most of its lifetime according to Sensor Tower.

“Land sake alive” nghĩa là gì?

"(My) land's sake (alive) hoặc “Sakes alive!” = My goodness! -> ngạc nhiên nhẹ.

Ví dụ
“Oh, my land's sakes alive!” thought Sabra, going back to her orderly kitchen (căn bếp ngăn nắp).

My land sakes alive. How did you boys happen to get that man and his folks? I never saw the like - never.

It was good we moved, for the other sections were battered off (đánh đập, phá bỏ) - My land sakes alive - how awful .

Against the newcomers, profitable (có lợi) as they were, still existed the ancient antipathy (ác cảm từ xa xưa) of the resident for the nonresident. "My land sakes alive!" commented stoical (chịu đựng) Molly Wingate after they had made some inquiries (câu hỏi) into the costs of staples (mặt hàng chủ lực) here.

"Fuss around with" nghĩa là gì?

Một chút bình yên. Photo by Robert Collins on Unsplash

"Fuss around with (someone/something)" = chơi đùa, nghịch ngợm với ai/thứ gì đó (vì căng thẳng).

Ví dụ
I gave her a high five and exited to say hi to both Marden and Sergement. But I didn't have time to fuss around with them.

And then I'd come home and fuss around with these guys. I'd say to myself: maybe Doobie would like to look out at the pool for a while.

Gladys scoffed (chế giễu). “Doubt it! They don't fuss around with that stuff the way we do. If it's filed (được đưa ra), that's as good as publishing it. It's public record (hồ sơ công khai), then.”

Four weeks isn't very long, so let's not tiptoe around (đừng né tránh) the main point or fuss around with leading up to it gently. You all are interested enough to agree to meet four times and to pray for three weeks.

"Look a fright" nghĩa là gì?

Mình đẹp, mình tự tin, mình tỏa sáng Photo by Philbert Pembani from Pexels

'Look a fright' có từ 'fright' = xấu xí kinh khủng, người ăn mặc xấu xí -> những người trông xấu xí, nhếch nhác hoặc vẻ ngoài không gọn gàng

Ví dụ
Hannah Murray: I look a fright in Game of Thrones ... but fans still recognise (nhận ra) me. Game of Thrones star Hannah Murray says she is surprised so many fans recognise her from the show - as she hopes she looks a lot better in real life.

11 a.m.: Hair and makeup (trang điểm). I look a fright. I don’t have time to fix it. My makeup girl helps stuff me into my dress, and Rodney and I are out the door at noon. We meet the rest of our party at the W Hotel and head to the theater at 1:30.

The downside of the ‘cover-up’ was that it gave me an inferiority complex (phức cảm tự ti), a disbelief when someone complimented (khen ngợi) me on my looks. As a teenager I had a phrase stuck to my headboard: ‘From far away I look alright, but close-up, I look a fright’.

On Halloween night, children embrace their quirks — their not-normals. They dress in ridiculous costumes (trang phục buồn cười, kì cục), make themselves look a fright or as silly (ngớ ngẩn) as is humanly possible. They don’t care how their costumes look to others. No matter what they’ve chosen to be — whether a slinky cat or an inflated dinosaur—they fully embrace it. They know what the holiday is about. Halloween, of course, is about letting go.

"Not fussed about" nghĩa là gì?

Làm căng cơ một chút sẽ khiến bạn dễ chịu, bớt căng thẳng hơn. Photo by Sarah Pflug from Burst

"Be not fussed about" = không ồn ào về -> không quá tiêu cực hay tích cực về ai/ điều gì.

Ví dụ
Locals in a tiny American hamlet (ngôi làng nhỏ) with the world’s biggest pelican statue (tượng chim bồ nông) say they are not fussed about the prospect (viễn cảnh) of losing the record (mất kỷ lục) to an Australian seaside township.

In the meantime, Apple seems to be enjoying a fair amount of success with the iPhone XR, which while not cheap, is cheaper than the iPhone XS and XS Max for those who might not be too fussed about OLED screens (màn hình đi-ốt phát quang hữu cơ) or dual camera setups (thiết lập cam kép).

Speaking early Wednesday, after he won his first-round match (trận đấu đầu tiên) against American Steve Johnson, Kyrgios was asked about having been fined $113,000 for misbehavior in a tournament (hành vi sai trái trong giải đấu) at Cincinnati. “The ATP is pretty corrupt (sụp đổ) anyway. I’m not fussed about it at all,” he said.

"Looking like a whole meal" nghĩa là gì?

Xinh thì làm gì cũng xinh các bác ạ Photo by bruce mars from Pexels

'Looking like a whole meal/a snack' = trông (hấp dẫn) như một món ăn -> trông rất hấp dẫn như chúng ta hay dùng từ 'ngon' đó các bạn ;)

Ví dụ
Living her life with no regrets, Tamar Braxton is showing fellow R&B diva Brandy some real love on social media where she is looking like a whole meal.

And apparently, she’s all about returning to the spotlight stronger than yesterday, much like Britney Spears, because she liked a fan’s tweet saying, “Okay, Jordyn comes back looking like a whole meal.”

Fans are asked to share their own "looking like a snack" fashion look using the brand's #CheetosFlaminHaute hashtag on Instagram, for a chance to attend the show. Cheetos-inspired looks include Wild Cheetah Cat Eye and Cheetos Puff Buns.

Rihanna made jaws drop (há hốc miệng) when she showed up to her Fenty event with a brand new look. The singer and fashion boss wore a short and slinky pink dress that sat just below her backside during her Fenty x Webster pop-up event in New York City on Tuesday. Looking like a whole meal, Rihanna accessorized with matching diamond encrusted stilettos (giày gót nhọn đính kim cương) and blinged out jewels with a hot pink lip.

"Look her up and down" nghĩa là gì?

Nhìn gì thế anh gì ơi? Photo by Mwabonje from Pexels

'Look one up and down' = nhìn ai từ trên xuống dưới -> nhìn chằm chằm vào ai đó/cái gì một cách rõ rành rành, thiếu lịch sự

Ví dụ
But instead of a supportive “well done!” from her broody, budding chef boyfriend, his immediate reaction is to look her up and down, scoff and say: “Wait, you got a job at a fashion magazine? What was it, a phone interview?”

My daughter, like any child, has grown a lot in a year. And in that year we've moved away from family, so when we come back home people are quick to talk about "how much she has changed." I know exactly what they're really saying, though, and so does my daughter. They look her up and down, as if she's on display, and I can tell they're trying to calculate how much weight (cân nặng) she has gained.

In the clip, Drake dances with the young fan, smells her hair, then kisses and caresses her while the crowd cheers wildly (điên cuồng). He then breaks away and asks the fan how old she is. "Seventeen," she answers, to riotous (om sòm, hỗn loạn) cheers and jeers from the audience. Drake steps back to look her up and down while asking, "Why do you look like that?" "I don't know if I should feel guilty or not but I had fun. I like the way your breasts feel against my chest," he says, creepily, before kissing her a few more times and sending her off stage.

“Kick up a fuss” nghĩa là gì?

Gì căng vậy mấy đứa. Photo by CloudVisual on Unsplash

“Kick up a fuss” = gây náo loạn, xáo trộn (thông qua tranh luận hoặc kêu ca phàn nàn)

Ví dụ
Dejan Lovren has admitted he wanted to depart Liverpool during the transfer window (kỳ chuyển nhượng), but will not kick up a fuss that it didn’t happen.

Naturally, that didn’t help me in my career. Only the troublemakers (kẻ gây rối)—those willing to kick up a fuss and perhaps make others a bit uncomfortable—get anything great done. So for a long time, I didn’t ask for what I wanted.

As he gathers his team about him, men are recruited (được tuyển) on the basis of their killer instincts (bản năng sát thủ) and ethical detachment (tách rời đạo đức), women on the basis of whether they look good in skirts and don’t kick up a fuss when he makes his predatory moves (săn mồi) on them.

"Look good on paper" nghĩa là gì?

Miệng cười đấy nhưng không biết bên trong nghĩ gì Photo by Artem Beliaikin from Pexels

'Look good on paper' = trông ổn trên giấy tờ -> trông có vẻ ổn thỏa trên lý thuyết nhưng thực tế thì không chắc, không đảm bảo

Ví dụ
“Why would they pick someone with no driver’s licence (bằng lái xe), terrible driving history, and 14 [convictions] to employ over somebody who doesn’t have all that stuff? I’m very employable,” he continued. “I’ve got a lot of skills. I just don’t look good on paper.”

To quote (trích lời) Clark Griswold’s boss from the movie “Christmas Vacation” when re-considering his decision to end Christmas bonuses, “Sometimes things look good on paper but lose their luster (vẻ rực rỡ, lộng lẫy) when you see how it affects real folks.” I couldn’t say it better.

The Cleveland Browns look good on paper but have a rookie (người mới) head coach (huấn luyện viên) and will be facing a lot of pressure and even more change. The Ravens suffered several major losses in the offseason and will need a big jump from quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was annihilated (tiêu diệt) by the Bolts' defense in January.

What may look good on paper does not always translate well when there are actual students in front of you. Please focus on the students as individuals, with individual needs, and recognize us as professionals who know what we are doing. Without trust, the relationship will deteriorate (phá hỏng). If you want relationship building to occur, and successful, collaborative communities of students and staff, then stop chipping away at what makes them unique. Please. Our students and staff deserve (xứng đáng) better.

"Look after number one" nghĩa là gì?

Hãy cứ vui tươi các cô gái ạ, đời cho ta bao lần đôi mươi Photo by Artem Beliaikin from Pexels

'Look after number one' = chăm sóc bản thân mình (number one = oneself = bản thân ai) -> đặt nhu cầu, mối quan tâm và trách nhiệm của bản thân lên trước hết, sống 'vì mình' trước khi 'vì người'

Ví dụ
An MHRA spokesman added: “Always purchase medicines from a registered pharmacy or reputable retail outlet. “When purchasing online, look for the Distance Selling Logo. “If you have any concerns about your health, speak to your doctor or a healthcare professional. “Don’t gamble (mạo hiểm, đánh cược) with your health, look after number one.”

These aren’t only romantic relationships – it doesn’t matter who it is. It could be a friend, or a family member, but if they bring nothing but negativity (tiêu cực) into your life and make you feel bad about yourself, now could be the time to consider moving away from them. Going back to the first point, remember to look after number one – yourself. You’ll be happier, and healthier for it.

It’s not all about looking after your gear; you also have to look after number one. This can be as simple as making sure you have a decent chair so you are sitting upright and not slouching (ngồi trượt xuống) and also making sure that everything is within reach (or within rolling distance of said chair). Maximum comfort means more time concentrating on mixing and recording, so being selfish in the studio can be a very selfless priority (ưu tiên) in the long run.

"Look down your nose" nghĩa là gì?

Dám chê chị à, để rồi xem Photo by Giftpundits.com from Pexels

'Look down one's nose at something or someone' = nhìn xuống mũi ai -> coi bản thân giỏi hơn ai đó nên có những hành động kiêu căng, ngạo mạn; thứ gì không đủ tốt với bản thân

Ví dụ
If you look down your nose at anyone for any reason, if you truly think you’re better than anyone else, then you think you’re better than Jesus, who thought himself no better and even less than you. He died in service to us, you and me. Do something good for someone else today simply because you can. If you don’t get this, may God bless and keep you always.

Oullette Island is the only island on Lac Des Ecorces, so along with 20 acres of private land, you can look down your nose at the mainland plebs (bình dân). There is a two-story wooden cottage (nhà riêng) already constructed on the land. But if you're paying close to a million dollars in property, it may not be up to your millionaire standards. Time to rip it down and build your own version of a chalet (biệt thự nhỏ).

"[Trump] tapped that vein of frustration (thất bại) and anger. And if somebody is frustrated and angry that they don't think the world is giving them a fair shot based on their hard work, you need to listen to that and understand it, and not look down your nose at it and call them names and say they're all racists (người phân biệt chủng tộc) or they're all this or they're all that, because it's just not true," McCaskill told David Axelrod on The Axe Files, a podcast from the University of Chicago Institute of Politics and CNN.

"Cover your ass" nghĩa là gì?

Che cho đỡ nắng :) Photo by: Rux Centea on Unsplash

"Cover your ass" = che mông -> nghĩa là hành động tự bảo vệ bản thân khỏi những lời chỉ trích, hình phạt pháp lý hoặc những hậu quả khác.

Ví dụ
Let’s be clear: Bedoya’s in-game statement wasn’t even “political.” “End gun violence (bạo lực)” is about right and wrong, in the same way that racism (phân biệt chủng tộc) isn’t “political,” despite what cover-your-ass sports television executives might tell you.

Insurance (bảo hiểm) is a hard reality in itself. It’s not a ‘nice to have,’ it’s a ‘need to have’ as dictated (bắt buộc) by the government, your bank, etcetera (vân vân),” they said. “One of the biggest issues for our industry, I believe, is the negative connotation attached to such necessities (điều cần thiết) (like taxes or exercise). When someone is unfamiliar with the why, they will fail to see the benefits and only see the burden (gánh nặng). Taxes are necessary for proper infrastructure (cơ sở vật chất), exercise is necessary for a healthy lifestyle, and insurance is necessary to protect you. It’s so common to see insurance sold with the ‘you have to buy it, or else’ mentality. Perhaps we could try to focus more on the ‘here’s how we cover your ass’ message.

In one of Scottish football’s most humiliating (đáng xấu hổ) results, they ran out 2-0 winners at Rugby Park last night to set up a second-round qualifying tie with Partizan Belgrade. That result netted Natalie £298.83, including her stake. It also covered the losses of a flight to Belgrade via Amsterdam she had booked (đặt) after Killie’s 2-1 first-leg victory. Natalie wrote: “Remember kids, always bet (đặt cược) against your team to cover your ass when you book flights before you’re through!!!"

"Look askance at" nghĩa là gì?

Lêu lêu mấy đứa không được đi Photo by Artem Beliaikin from Pexels

'Look askance at someone or something' có từ 'askance' là một bên, ngờ vực -> nhìn ai/cái gì một cách ngờ vực, không tin tưởng, ngạc nhiên

Ví dụ
In the years since I conducted that interview, I’ve continued to look askance at the idea that we can avoid catastrophic (thảm khốc) ecosystem collapse by conceptualizing (thuộc các khái niệm) earth’s materials, relationships and processes as nothing more than a new set of markets within capitalism.

A second plaintiffs’ witness (nhân chứng cho bên nguyên), former Nebraska Department of Insurance director Ann Frohman, said that rating agencies would look askance at discrepancies (không nhất quán) between internal membership numbers and ones the organization publicizes, which could hurt the Knights’ insurance business,

Asked for an update, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport says: "It is in everyone's interests that the exchange of personal data between EU member states and the UK continues." That may be true, but Pinsent Masons' Wynn reckons it could take two years to get a UK adequacy decision, adding that the commission might look askance at the UK's use of surveillance (giám sát) under the Investigatory Powers Act or that the process could get dragged into the bigger Brexit row.

"Cloud the issue" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Miguel Henriques on Unsplash

"Cloud the issue" = Che phủ vấn đề -> nghĩa là làm xáo trộn hoặc đánh lạc hướng chủ đề đang bàn tới bằng cách đưa ra những thông tin không liên quan hoặc gây hiểu nhầm.

Ví dụ
Even among the indisputably (hiển nhiên) guilty (có tội), extenuating circumstances (giảm nhẹ hình phạt) often cloud the issue. Is it right to execute an inmate who has been rehabilitated (cải tạo) and displays sincere remorse? An inmate with dementia who no longer remembers his crime? An inmate whose mental illness is now being successfully treated?

On Saturday, Mr Ratcliffe said his wife had decided to end her protest (phản đối) and had eaten some porridge (cháo đặc) with apple and banana. Mr Ratcliffe’s belief that Mr Johnson’s words had “traumatic” effects for his wife were repeated to the MP. He replied: “I do feel a deep sense of anguish about it as I have said and I have apologised several times in the House of Commons and elsewhere. “But it is very very important that in this conversation we don’t allow whatever I may have said or done to cloud the issue.”

However, the scandal resulting from the new revelations (phát hiện) should not cloud the issue of refugee (tị nạn) and migrant (nhập cư) resettlement (tái định cư). On the contrary (ngược lại), the renewed attention on the deal should be taken as an opportunity to redirect focus on its original, humanitarian promise.

"Sing before breakfast, you'll cry before night" = Hát mừng trước khi ăn sáng thì bạn sẽ gào khóc trước khi trời tối -> Câu tục ngữ khuyên chúng ta đừng vui mừng quá sớm với những gì chúng ta đạt được vì mọi chuyện chỉ mới bắt đầu thôi và chưa biết kết cục cuối cùng ra sao.

Ví dụ
It's okay to celebrate for your first new achievement, but keep in mind that "sing before breakfast, you'll cry before night".

I used to think that he's my mr.right for the rest of my life, unfortunately we broke up last month and it's true to say "sing before breakfast, you'll cry before night".

I'm very happy because the weather is pretty nice in the morning so that I can go camping with my roommates but now it's raining cats and dogs, so I feel like "sing before breakfast, you'll cry before night."

"Change places with" nghĩa là gì?

Tui cũng muốn được như cô ấy Photo by Daria Shevtsova from Pexels

'Change places with one' = đổi vị trí với ai -> đổi vị trí, vai trò của ai hay tình huống nào với ai

Ví dụ
His friend Dennis Smethers said, “He has expressed his complete contempt for himself and stated how much he regrets the accident and would do anything to be able to change places with the victims (nạn nhân).”

Born in Jerusalem, Raz, 47, spoke about his diagnosis (chẩn đoán) of post-traumatic stress disorder. He said he asked to change places with his therapist (nhà trị liệu) so he could face the door. "Part of how I dealt with my PTSD, I did crazy stuff," he said, including going to the West Bank alone.

What an uncharitable (khắt khe) attitude when we are supposed to envy (ghen tị) the rich. Isn't that the real source of all our complaining about how receptive this nation is to their best interests? We are petty (nhỏ mọn) and we would change places with them in a heartbeat. Ah, the nights of peaceful sleep that thought must have induced (được cho là, quy vào) in trendy suburbs while water rippled gently in the pools out back and others slept in cardboard boxes in dank (ẩm ướt) city alleyways.

"Change for the better" nghĩa là gì?

Để thành một phiên bản hoàn hảo của chính mình, phải nỗ lực Photo by The Lazy Artist Gallery from Pexels

'Change for the better' = thay đổi để tốt hơn -> thay đổi theo chiều hướng tốt lên

Ví dụ
Having Spider-Man connected to the MCU is beneficial to everyone involved no matter what either Sony or Disney say right now. Especially after the blockbuster success of Far From Home. So regardless of what anyone says in the press (báo chí) at the moment, things can always change for the better down the road. But it just means it probably won’t be today or tomorrow.

Our work at the Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business has shown that in addition to being able to imagine new possibilities — what Oxford academic Peter Nicholls calls the “adjacent possible” — there are at least two other elements (yếu tố) that must be in place if we want things to change for the better.

In our journey to deepening of our faith and spirituality, an examination of conscience (lương tâm) is important. If atonement (sự chuộc lỗi) and penance (ăn năn) are to be achieved, we have to look at who we are and where we’re heading for our redemption (chuộc lại) and salvation (cứu giúp). As sinners (người có tội), like those who became saints (thánh, người trong sạch), we can always change for the better and become holy.
