"Straighten him out" nghĩa là gì?

Để mị nói cho mà nghe!!! Photo courtesy: Stephen Cosh

"Straighten someone out" = duỗi thẳng ai đó -> cải thiện hành vi của người đó; dạy bảo.

Ví dụ
He walks away. Waugh stands still for a moment, moved by the encounter. He’s glad that seeing him gave Smith a moment of reckoning (suy tưởng). “Just from that, being embarrassed, that might straighten him out.”

Going against his instincts, he accepts and, in typical sports movie fashion, helps straighten them out and collect some wins. The difference between this and, say, any PG-rated Disney sports movie released in the 1990s is Cunningham’s life continues to spiral (di chuyển) in the background. He continues drinking and, as he’s exposed to some of the reasons behind his pain, binges (chè chén) hard.

In November 2008, I found my husband Cleve in bed next to me as usual. What was unusual was that he was turning purple and suffocating (nghẹt thở) on his own vomit. I will never forget how heavy his limp (mềm nhũng) 225-pound body was as I attempted to get him to the ground, only to drop him on his head and frantically (điên cuồng) straighten him out. I performed CPR through vomit and sobs (khóc thút thít). When the paramedics (cứu thương) came, they gave him a shot of naloxone to the heart. He lived. He was lucky that I was there to find him.

"Charm the pants off" nghĩa là gì?

Thế này đã đủ làm anh mê đắm? Photo by Lucas Ettore Chiereguini from Pexels

"Charm the pants off (one)" nghĩa là quyến rũ, bỏ bùa ai (khiến người ta tự cởi quần).

Ví dụ
Brad Pitt charmed the pants off literally everyone at the Oscars Vanity Fair party.

A big, swaggering (nghênh ngang) French bistro (quán rượu nhỏ) has just sauntered into (đưa vào) town and it’s come to charm your pants off.

It’s been said that our late Alan Bond could charm the pants off anyone he met and convince (thuyết phục) them the world was flat if he wanted to.

Jimmy so far hasn't seemed capable (khả năng) of putting a bomb on a wheelchair (xe lăn) or equipping (trang bị) a machine gun (súng máy) to the trunk of a car, but he is willing to charm the pants off those who mean him harm (làm hại).

"One-eyed (pants/trouser) snake" = rắn một mắt (trong quần) -> (tiếng lóng) dương vật.

Ví dụ
Of course not everyone was so happy with seeing Kravitz’s one-eyed pants snake. Some people just want to make these things as hard as possible.

Briant Brown (more than 17,000 Insta fans) writes, “I have tasted your cream and now it’s time for my one-eyed snake to be moisturised (dưỡng ẩm) by that same cream.” Imagine (tưởng tượng) working alongside him – you’d never eat his homemade creations (tác phẩm tự làm) on office bake sale day, would you?

There were all the trappings (bẫy) of a traditional trade show (triển lãm thương mại). Walking the show floor was as usual, full sensory overload (quá tải giác quan), with each carnival barker clamoring (hò hét ầm ĩ) for your attention with much fanfare (phô trương)—”Come see the one-eyed snake,” “Hercules battling the greatest of threats with the greatest of ease”—you know it when you see it.

"The birds and the bees" nghĩa là gì?

Không biết trong đây có gì? Photo courtesy: dana marostega

"The birds and the bees" = chuyện chim và ong -> nói về việc giáo dục giới tính cho trẻ nhỏ.

Ví dụ
The place did you study in regards to the birds and the bees? Did they point out that the USA has one of many highest teen beginning charges (giao nhiệm vụ) in developed nations? Or {that a} sexually transmitted illness can result in long-term urinary tract (đường tiết niệu) issues?

As you step into your life, we must have the discussion: the birds-and-the-bees of being in the workforce as a woman. There is no reason to be discouraged (chán nản) or dismayed (mất tinh thần). But there is a truth in the experience that I want you to understand early so you will be best prepared for success.

In this gem of an episode, Bruce was convinced (thuyết phục) that Kendall being on birth control for period cramps was going to "open doors" for other things — so he enlisted the help of Khloe in order to talk to Kendall about the birds and the bees. It might be just a tad (một tí) different than the average sex talk, though.

"Get out of jail free card" nghĩa là gì?

"Get out of jail free card" = Thẻ ra tù miễn phí (dùng như một danh từ) -> Chỉ điều bạn có/lợi dụng để giúp bạn thoát khỏi tình cảnh khó khăn/sự trừng phạt mà không gặp vấn đề gì cả.

Ví dụ
Coronavirus is a get out of jail free card for some offenders in Florida.

While there’s a teeny, itty bitty part of me that thinks Bill Cosby is just a frail grandpa that deserves a break, this is vastly eclipsed by recapping what he did when he was full-bodied and able. No man – or woman for that matter – should ever be able to pull a get out of jail free card because they don’t want to get sick.

The senior pastor at Maitland Christian Church in NSW says the redress scheme's compensation (bồi thường) cap of $150,000 is far too low and "everything is weighted far too heavily in the favour of the church". "To me, the redress scheme is almost a 'get-out-of-jail-free card' for the church," Pastor Cotton told a federal parliamentary committee via teleconference (hội nghị qua điện thoại, các cuộc họp được tổ chức qua điện thoại) on Monday.

"Liar, liar, pants on fire" nghĩa là gì?

Nói dối không vui, nói dối thì chơi một mình. Photo by Diovoletta

"Liar, liar, pants on fire" = kẻ nói dối, quần cháy kìa là kiểu chế giễu của đám học sinh được sử người lớn sử dụng một cách châm biếm.

Ví dụ
Adopting (chấp nhận) the children's classic saying 'liar liar pants on fire' Patterson takes part in ‘Pants of Truth’ game. Wearing '‘The liar liar pants on fire Pants of Truth,’ Pizza Hut Delivery's ambassador (đại sứ) allows him to visually demonstrate (chứng minh) the difference between a truth and a lie.

As popular as the saying has become, though—and as satisfying as it is to chant or say—“liar, liar, pants on fire!” is not the most intuitive (trực giác) of phrases. Although people’s pants do sometimes catch on fire, this correlates (điều tương quan) more with carrying around accidentally (vô tình) explosive materials (vật liệu cháy nổ) than it does with truthfulness (sự thật).

“Over and over again, we wanted to have trust. It’s built on the premise (tiền đề) that we are truthful, that we come forward. But there is no truth with you whatsoever. That’s why it’s important to you,” Gosar said. “To look up here and look at the old adage (ngạn ngữ) that our moms taught us. ‘Liar, liar, pants on fire.’ No one should ever listen to you and give you credibility (tín nhiệm).”

"Puff and pant" nghĩa là gì?

"Puff and pant" = thở phù phù, thở hổn hển -> thở một cách nặng nhọc.

Ví dụ
Searching for a new puffer jacket? There's no need to puff and pant about it as we have a great selection (lựa chọn) here, whatever your needs.

And the people who puff and pant the most as they whizz (đi vèo) around malls are in North Dakota, where a whopping (lượng lớn) 80% feel they're getting fitter (mệt hơn).

Vigorous (hoạt bát, sôi nổi) activities are those that make you breathe harder or puff and pant. Examples include aerobics, jogging (chạy bộ) and many competitive sports (thể thao cạnh tranh).

Located at the gateway (cổng vào) to the Highlands, Boat of Garten Golf Club is an enchanting (bỏ bùa mê) place. Flanking (đi bên sườn) the course to the west is the quaint (lạ lạ) Strathspey Railway, and the lovingly restored steam trains (tàu hơi nước) occasionally puff and pant their way past the course.

"Get on in the world" nghĩa là gì?

Một bàn tay nắm cả thế giới. Photo by  Ben White

"Get on in the world" = Cứ tiếp tục vươn lên trong cuộc sống -> không ngừng nâng cao/cải thiện vị thế trong xã hội; gặt hái nhiều thành công hơn so với trước đây.

Ví dụ
"They have got to get rid of this idea that people believe in the politics of jealousy. If you want to tax the rich out of the country you vote Labour or Liberal Democrat. "If you are happy for people to get on in the world and make a good living you vote Conservative."

We rarely saw any irregular workers in a company back then, and people took it for granted that a company where they had gotten a job became a quasi-family (gia đình tựa như). It was the norm that when a boss went to an izakaya pub, subordinates knew they should follow. The boss often taught them how to get on in the world, and sometimes even set up arranged-marriage meetings.

But this type of education grows more complicated and subtle as you get older. Core values – those qualities that make us decent human beings – should they be instilled? And then there are the life skills that help us get on in the world and get along with the people we encounter on the way. These include compassion, honesty, respect, empathy, conscientiousness, optimism, adaptability, initiative, motivation — and yes, that modish (đúng kiểu, kiểu mốt) word, resilience (tính kiên cường, bền bỉ) — and a whole lot more.

"Get on (one's) good side" = Làm điều để vui lòng ai, để xin ân huệ và có sự giúp đỡ từ họ.

Ví dụ
I would work hard to get on her good side, but I’d make sure that I don’t live under her roof.

If someone wants to get on your good side, what candy or liquor should they ply (tiếp tế liên tục, tiếp mãi) you with? I don’t drink and I’m not a big fan of candy. Tell me you’re an Arsenal supporter, though, and I’ll at least hear you out.

The black ability, sadly, only reanimates a creature to their owner's battlefield, but that still provides a ton of incentive for players to get on your good side. All of Kenrick's abilities make him great for a casual sit-down with friends.

"Pee your pants" nghĩa là gì?

"Pee one's pants" hoặc "wet (one's) pants" = đái ra quần -> cười quá đà, cười đái ra quần. Nghĩa khác là quá sợ hãi (vì người khác quá giỏi) hoặc chết đừng, hoảng hốt (vì khủng bố...).

Ví dụ
Hilarious stand-up comedy (hài độc thoại vui nhộn), exclusive videos, and cameos (khách mời) from your favorite Scary Mommy personalities (nhân vật) might just make you pee your pants.

Watching these guys escape (trốn thoát), like the guy filming did, would be hilarious for the first fifteen seconds but as soon as they started running toward me I’d probably pee my pants.

It’s considered one of the greatest Game 7s and individual player matchups (trận đấu) ever, and you can watch it from the comfort of your own home, with a pause button (nút tạm dừng), and a bathroom, and full agency to not pee your pants.

Instead, the RVSPCA wrote, “We want to encourage people to post goofy (ngốc nghếch) pictures of their pets and maybe for a brief moment we can smile, laugh, or just relax our minds for a little bit.” Some of the pictures are rolling-on-the-floor (lăn lộn trên sàn), pee-your-pants funny.

Yêu thương và tôn trọng nhau là đủ rồi, ai quan tâm ai làm chủ chứ. Photo by Emma Bauso from Pexels

"Wear the pants (in the house)" = mặc quần trong nhà -> trụ cột gia đình, đảm nhiệm mọi việc trong nhà.

Meghan quite clearly wears the pants in that relationship and all I can say is “welcome to the club, Harry”.

You're the man of the house, you wear the pants, go ahead and sell our property (tài sản) to a Jap and see what comes of it.

The tables would be turned in his household; his wife would obey (nghe lời) hrs orders—or else. Anyway, he would never marry a woman like his stepmother who wanted to wear the pants.

She and Ben discuss finances (thảo luận tài chính), and she appears to want to be in on every family decision they make — some have suggested that she “wears the pants” in the marriage. People have started to believe that her strong personality (tính cách mạnh mẽ) resulted in her not wanting to take a back seat.

"Work from home" hoặc "work remote" = làm việc tại nhà/ làm việc từ xa -> bạn có thể làm việc tại nhà hoặc bất kì địa điểm nào bạn thích ở một số ngày trong tháng. Nhưng với tình hình dịch bệnh hiện nay, "work from home" đúng nghĩa là chỉ ở nhà làm việc online mà thôi.

Ví dụ
Telecoms giant (công ty viễn thông khổng lồ) AT&T has also told its 245,000 staff to work from home where possible.

Microsoft is allowing and encouraging (khuyến khích) its employees (nhân viên) to work from home as the novel coronavirus outbreak (bùng phát) continues to spread in countries around the world.

As COVID-19 continues to spread, this seems an increasingly likely scenario. “Everyone who can work from home should work from home,” said Harvard epidemiologist (nhà dịch tễ học) William Hanage this week.

VNDirect Securities Joint Stock Company (công ty Cổ phần Chứng khoán) has also tested (thử nghiệm) work from home for its employees so that it can shift online. As soon as the epidemic broke out (dịch bệnh bùng phát), it set up safety regulations (quy định an toàn) and tested remote working scenarios (viễn cảnh) for its employees, it said.

Chán quá đi, cậu chủ mãi chẳng về. Photo by Dina Nasyrova from Pexels

"Bore the pants off (of) (one)" = buồn muốn tụt quần -> buồn chán, chẳng hứng thú gì.

Ví dụ
I don’t watch MasterChef; the format bores the pants off me.

Try not to take another practice swing (động tác xoay) without aiming (nhắm) at something and don't take too many practice swings as it will bore the pants off your playing partners (bạn nhảy) and add up to a slow round.

By the second or third month of their run as a good guy or bad, the vibrancy (chấn động) begins to fade and wrestlers (các đô vật) start to show themselves as one dimensional gimmicks (mánh thu hút chú ý) who bore the pants off everyone.

“Fury’s a great guy,” Hearn said. “Fury’s done brilliantly well (rất tốt) to get back in the ring (sàn đấu). Have you ever seen him in a good fight? No. The only way he can beat Wilder is to do what he did against Klitschko, [which] was to bore the pants off of everyone, and to hold and grab.

"Bend with the wind" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Carissa Rogers on Unsplash.

'Bend with the wind' có từ bend là uốn cong, làm cong; 'xuôi theo chiều gió' -> cụm từ này nghĩa là kiên cường thích nghi với hoàn cảnh bất lợi, nghịch cảnh, như một cái cây oằn mình trong gió bão vậy; cứ tưởng 'gió chiều nào, xoay chiều ấy' mà không phải các bạn nhỉ :)

Ví dụ
Founder of Deliciously Ella, Ella Mills also turned to trees in these testing times, reminding her followers alongside her baby: “The strongest trees are the ones that can bend with the wind.”

Shipp revealed her marriage in a series of posts on Instagram showing the new couple celebrating in front of the Eiffel Tower, writing in one caption that “those that bend with the wind will weather the storm.”

An end to the US-China trade war and the risks of hard Brexit receding in Europe will definitely help China in the months to come. But Beijing needs to “bend with the wind” and focus on consolidating a much more positive mindset for economic optimism ahead.

Yet none of the extraparliamentary movements of the early nineteenth century – not abolitionism (phong trào bãi nô), nor the movement for electoral reform that followed it – ever seriously threatened the established order. This was because, unlike its French counterpart, the British hierarchy knew when to bend with the wind. Abolitionists saw the accession of the youthful Queen Victoria in 1837 as an opportunity for reform, not an obstacle to it, and the young monarch (nữ vương trẻ tuổi) was soon under pressure to endorse (chuẩn y) their campaign. She left the task to the Prince Consort (chồng nữ vương), who made his frst public speech, just three months after his marriage, at a meeting for the Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade and for the Civilization of Africa. ‘I deeply regret,’ Prince Albert said, ‘that the benevolent and persevering exertions of England to abolish that atrocious (hung bạo, tàn ác, tàn bạo) traffc in human beings (at once the desolation of Africa and the blackest stain upon civilized Europe) have not as yet led to any satisfactory conclusion. But I sincerely trust that this great country will not relax in its efforts until it has fnally, and for ever, put an end to a state of things so repugnant to the spirit of Christianity, and the best feelings of our nature.’

"Scientific wild ass guess" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Andrea Piacquadio on Unsplash

"Scientific wild ass guess" có từ guess là phỏng đoán, wild ass là con lừa hoang dã (nghĩa lóng là người ít học, quê mùa, cục mịch) -> do vậy cụm từ này nghĩa là ước đoán, phỏng đoán dựa trên bằng chứng, lý luận rất đơn giản, không thể tin được.

Ví dụ
Besides, ISRO is about engineering. Engineers deal with concrete (bê tông) things, and all the complexities (phức tạp) and unpredictability of the real world. That's why engineers are notorious (khét tiếng) for the SWAG (Scientific Wild Ass Guess) factor --- the margin of error --- they put into all their calculations to reduce risk.

Are you merchandising (buôn bán) plant-based foods not only to make a profit but to satisfy consumer wants and build loyalty? Terrific. These goals are not mutually exclusive. Are you really on board or are you buying and merchandising based on habit (thói quen) or with the SWAG (scientific wild-ass guess) method?

"Cream in (one's) pants" hoặc "cream one’s jeans" = kem ở trong quần -> (tiếng lóng) xuất tinh trong quần.

Ví dụ
Boy, there's somebody who'd make you cream in your jeans for sure. Have you seen her? She drives a red '68 Porsche.

The vision of Brock's naked body glistening (lấp lánh) with sweat (mồ hôi) almost made Farley cream in his pants right then and there.

"If I were to start telling you about it, you'd cream your jeans before I got to the good part.” I blink two, three times. Then say, “I love it when you talk dirty (khẩu dâm).”

"Couldn't hit a bull in the ass with a bass fiddle" = không thể cầm đàn violin đánh trúng đít con bò-> nghĩa là không thể ngắm chuẩn, rất vụng về.

Ví dụ
The coach was very blunt (lỗ mãng, thẳng thừng) with reporters after the game, saying the team "couldn’t hit a bull in the ass with a bass fiddle" in regard to its poor shooting performance. The Mavericks scored all of 10 points in the first quarter, shooting 36.4 percent from the field overall.

And then there's Loehmann, the innocent (vô tội) victim of Tamir Rice's unexpected growth spurt. He lost his previous job as a cop in a tiny Cleveland suburb because he couldn't hit a bull in the ass with a bass fiddle on the firing range, and also because he was something of a basket case.

Late in his career, which lasted until 1997, Shea pulled a gun on a shackled defendant in his courtroom. He later told a reporter that there’d been nothing to worry about, because he was a terrible shot and “couldn’t hit a bull in the ass with a bass-fiddle.”

"Get on my quince" nghĩa là gì?

"Get on (one's) quince (quả mộc qua)" = Chọc tức ai/làm ai giận.

Ví dụ

“When you are kept inside for long periods, you go back to being a child again. I fell in love very quickly, I got angered by things that wouldn’t usually get on my quince, I even started sucking my thumb again! Things wind you up so much more when you can’t leave.

In my case, "losing the investment" is losing someone who knows the backstory to all the colleagues I bitch about and I'm devastated at having to explain to someone new why all these people get on my quince. For Stacey, she wants to see a return after bullishly investing so much in the ice cube empire.

"Get off track" = Mất dấu -> Bị phân tán/mất tập trung; không tập trung vào mục tiêu/vấn đề chính.

Ví dụ
“We’re staying open just like a restaurant,” he said. “We’ve been doing deliveries. People are conscious of their health. They don’t want to get off track.”

“There is no delay in the firm’s existing investment projects so far although things could get off track when the coronavirus outbreak causes further volatility (tính không ổn định, thay đổi đột ngột),” said a spokesperson from KB Securities, adding “We are doing business as usual so far.”

Clarify with your supervisor their expectations and priorities in regards to task management and productivity. What is his or her preferred means of communication? How often will meetings occur? Get specifics and maintain an open channel of communication with co-workers to avoid misunderstandings that can arise with emails and text messages. The same goes for friends and neighbors who may want to stop by and chat, causing you to lose focus and get off-track. A gentle reminder that although your work location has changed, your need for professional work time has not. Set up a time to connect after your usual work hours.

“When I was growing up, my grandma would say, ‘Sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite,’ and I just thought it was a cute little saying,” she said.

"Good night, sleep tight. Don't let the bed bugs bite." A comfortingly familiar but always horrifying rhyme (vần điệu kinh khủng) to think of before you crash your head on the pillow.

We’ve all heard the saying ‘good night, don't let the bedbugs bite’ but this applies to mosquitoes too. Therefore always keep a tube of mosquito repellent handy (thuốc chống muỗi cầm tay) whether you’re planning to stay indoors or outdoors.
